A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Welcome to the 2nd issue of The Dish. We are coming off the heels of our first year of publishing a new menu magazine for Branson visitors and locals. The first year of publishing is always the toughest. With any publication there is the challenge of distribution and the need for advertisers. We are excited to have more distribution points and advertising with our second issue, which is better for you, our reader. Part of vacationing is about the new dining experiences you can have. There are over 200 restaurants in the Branson area just waiting for you to discover. Our vision is to be a useful tool to help you experience a variety of Branson’s dining options. Our goal with this publication will be to continue to provide menu samples and highlights. We’ve also included articles on our local restaurant owners. Meet Dave

ake a short and scenic drive south on 65 Highway, and experience a destination that feels worlds away. Top of the Rock is home to world-class attractions, golf and dining, all overlooking the spectacular Table Rock Lake. Three uniquely beautiful restaurants are available. Osage Restaurant and Buffalo Bar offer rustic, elegant settings and traditional American cuisine, while Arnie’s Barn is a 150 year old barn, relocated from Arnold Palmer’s hometown and serves Mexican dishes with an Ozarks flare. After dinner, head to the Buffalo Bar patio and enjoy the sunset ceremony, complete with live bagpipe music and a Civil War cannon firing. Mel’s Hard Luck Diner is one of Branson’s most popular restaurants and features the name of it’s owner, Mel Bilbo. How did Mel end up owning a restaurant in Branson, MO? In March 2004 Mel Bilbo negotiated with his former employer, Herschend Family Entertainment to take over Hard Luck Diner. The name was changed to Mel’s Hard Luck Diner at the urging of friends. The sitcom Alice that ran from 1976 to 1985 featured Mel’s Diner. The diner played a key role in the show. Numerous phrases came from the show and became quite popular such as “Kiss my grits!” and Mel’s “Stow It”. It certainly wouldn’t hurt anything to put Mel’s name on his restaurant as lots of people remember Mel’s Diner. If you haven’t been to Mel’s Hard Luck Diner you’ll get a unique experience of seeing and hearing many of the servers singing. That’s right, not only do the servers take your order but they might just bust out in a song and entertain you as well. Mel’s Hard Luck Diner has had two of their servers appear on American Idol. One made it to #44 and the other was #20. Today you’ll find about 20 servers who are singers. Most of them have

CDs available you can buy at the diner. You’ll hear a variety of styles of music, but what is also interesting is their stories, which are often shared. It might just even be an interesting hard luck story. Stepping into Mel’s Hard Luck Diner is also like stepping into an attraction with lots of memorabilia combined with a 1950s theme. Mel has a strong background in the theme park industry which has translated into a truly unique themed dining experience in Branson. Mel got his first theme park job at Astroworld in Houston in the late 1960s. In just five years he was the Assistant Director of Operations. From there Mel moved to Carowinds Theme Park in North and South Carolina as the head of operations. Mel proceeded to Marriott Corporation when Marriott tried to get into the theme park business. Mel moved on to be the head of operations at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, owned by Anheuser Busch. Mel spent 17 years with them and ended up as the Corporate Vice President of Operations and also of

Marketing for their theme park division. Mel wasn’t done in the theme park business; Disney was knocking on Mel’s door. Mel joined Disney Regional Entertainment. Mel found out that Herschend Family Entertainment (Silver Dollar City) had an open position for their CEO. Mel was blessed to get the position and spent 3 years at Silver Dollar City, which is what brought him to Branson. This is Mel’s first and only restaurant to own but his career in theme parks gave him the opportunity to work with great food people where he learned a lot about food operations. You can also see how theming has played a role in the restaurant and the influence of his theme park days. Today, Mel has grown beyond Mel’s Hard Luck Diner to also include his Christmas store, Kringles, T Charlestons and Reflections all in the Grand Village on W. Highway 76. One more thing, be sure to check out Mel’s favorite dish on the menu, the peanut butter banana concoction.

Branson’s Best Restaurants

Nolan and Babette Fogle’s rise to being Branson’s biggest restaurant owners has been paved with lots of hard work. Nolan moved to Branson when he was 19 years old after growing up on a dairy farm in Plato, Missouri. Nolan did a few odd jobs here and there in Branson. He wanted his own restaurant but knew nothing about the business. “I got a job waiting tables. My serving job started at 4:00 pm.” However, Nolan would go in early in the mornings to work different shifts for free and learn the business. It wasn’t long before Nolan was the manager and soon after that he was ready to be on his own. The opportunity came when the Branson Towers Hotel needed someone to run its restaurant. Nolan jumped at the chance. The first year the restaurant was a country buffet but needed something else to be different. In the second year the restaurant was changed to “Whipper Snappers” which featured all you can eat lobster, crab legs and seafood. Nobody else was doing this type of buffet. For the next 16 years, Whipper Snappers was at the Branson Towers before moving to the lower level of the Great American Steak and Chicken House. The name came from Nolan’s dad always calling Nolan a whippersnapper. Peppercorns Restaurant was their next purchase and it ran as Peppercorns for 12 years, but then it was time for a change. Today that restaurant is now “The Great American Steak and Chicken House.” With the new theme and complete remodel, business more

than doubled. The Fogle family was on to something with the theming concept. Another opportunity came on the heels of Peppercorns which was the Fall Creek Steak & Catfish House on Highway 165. It was a restaurant with good sales, but Nolan thought he could do better. In 2006 the restaurant burnt down and in 2008 it was reopened. Be ready to catch their fresh rolls because here, they toss them to you. The Mabe family came to Nolan and Babette and asked them to run the Baldknobbers Restaurant. They did for over 15 years. They then purchased the Plantation Restaurant across from White Water. Today it is Cici’s Pizza which is the Fogle’s first franchised restaurant. Once again Nolan and Babette took risks, tore down the old restaurant, bought the Pizza Hut next door, tore it down and then built the World’s Largest Cici’s. It’s been the #1 Cici’s in the system. The restaurant also has over 60 video games.

themed Italian restaurant that you can’t miss as you drive down Highway 76. It features 400 seats of fun. You’ll know you are there when you see the big fork and meatball outside. Nolan and Babette Fogle have been successful in taking existing restaurants and making them better, theming them and giving guests something they can’t get in their hometown. It’s a formula that has worked incredibly well for them. When asked to what the Fogles attribute their success, Nolan stated the following, “God, Family Support. Great Staff. And a Good Work Ethic.” Nolan and Babette have another idea up their sleeve that they’d like to do but they have to find the right location and energy to do it. We’ll have to stay tuned to see what’s next.

The Burger Shack was next on the list of restaurants added to the line up and features burgers, fresh cut fries, salads and shakes. In May of 2015 Pasghetti’s opened on Highway 76. This project was the Fogle’s biggest yet with an estimated 6 million dollar price tag. Once again they tore down an old hotel and restaurant and built an incredible

Famous Dave’s BBQ of restaurants. He was the founder and inventor of Godfather’s Pizza and was the first franchisee of Famous Dave’s BBQ. Willie was a mentor to Dave Jones. Dave went on to open seven Famous Dave’s BBQ for Mr. Theisen. Then Dave finally had his opportunity to open his own Famous Dave’s BBQ in 2006 in Branson.

Dave Jones is the local owner of Famous Dave’s BBQ at Branson Landing. His story of how he got into the restaurant business is an interesting one. Dave has worked in restaurants since the age of 14, but went into the military at a young age. While in the military, Dave served as a Chaplain Assistant and an Infantry Soldier. When he got out, he enrolled in college at Grace University and was planning to go into youth ministry. During college he needed a part time job, so he got hired at the Famous Dave’s in Lincoln, Nebraska. That soon opened the door to opportunity. Dave was recruited by Willie Theisen to go into management and open multiple restaurants in the Midwest. Dave decided to make a career change at that point. Willie Theisen was a big deal in the world

Dave began expanding in 2011 with a second store in Springfield, Missouri. In 2012, another store was opened in Overland Park, Kansas, but was later closed. In 2013, a restaurant was opened in Independence, Missouri, and in 2014, three Famous Dave’s were purchased, with two in Nebraska and one at Legends Outlets in Kansas City, Kansas. What is interesting, is that Dave had worked at those restaurants for the original owner back in the day. In September 2015, Dave bought the Famous Dave’s BBQ in Lincoln, Nebraska where he got his original start. Today, Dave sits on the Famous Dave’s BBQ franchisee board as the co-chair and is in a strong leadership position to help drive the future success of the restaurant chain. Dave Jones is a big believer in Famous Dave’s. In fact, Famous Dave’s BBQ has won over 950 national and local BBQ awards. Nobody comes close to that in terms of awards in the restaurant industry. Everything is made from

scratch. “No other restaurant out there does that. It cost’s more to be fresh,” but, according to Dave, it’s worth it. Branson’s Famous Dave’s BBQ is a truly unique restaurant overlooking Lake Taneycomo. Sit out on the patio or enjoy the cozy lodge atmosphere inside. Although Dave didn’t finish college and go into the ministry, he ministers in different ways today by supporting several community charities. We can help others,” says Dave. Dave Jones is another example of the American dream, where hard work, while providing great service and high quality food pays off.
