Located around 1,000 miles from the US-Mexico border at the southernmost tip of The Baja Peninsula are Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo (also known as Los Cabos or “The Capes”). This is home to the San Jose del Cabo International Airport (SJD) which welcomes most of the tourists into this beautiful Mexican destination. There, you may nd yourself at one of the most fabulous resorts found along the coast holding a delicious maragarita by the in nity pool surrounded by turquoise waters and golden sandy beaches.
Enjoying the Paci c Ocean and the Sea of Cortez (or Golfo de California), Los Cabos has become one of the most visited vacation spots in Mexico, re ecting another historic year in 2023 with a new record number of travelers of 3.95 million, according to Los Cabos Tourism Board. With a unique and extraordinary beauty that includes 28 miles of Tourist Corridor, Los Cabos o ers a ride of breathtaking views that connects both towns. The safety and high end services make Los Cabos a top vacation destination.
Let’s get the party started at the lively El Medano Beach!
Located in the heart of Cabo San Lucas town, you’ll find El Medano Beach- a family friendly environment with swimmable waters!
El Medano Beach has many restaurants, beach clubs, and beautiful hotels that sit along the 2 miles of beach.
The bay of El Medano has the safest conditions for all the water sports offered at this spot like wave runners, flyboarding, paddle boarding, kayaking, parasailing, and more!
Here at El Medano Beach is is where you catch the well-known watertaxis to the famous rock formation landmark,The Arch. If you decide to go, do not forget to visit The Lovers Beach where you can be dropped off and picked up at a later hour. Here, snorkeling gear and bottled water are a must.
An important mark to know about Lovers Beach, is that it is connected to the Pacific Ocean, please do not swim the Pacific side of it...it tends to be rough. Instead enjoy a safe swim on the bayside where you will find the colorful marine life along the rocks for a great snorkeling experience!
Photo by Joel ÁlvarezOn Hwy 1 at km 13, you’ll find an exit towards Santa Maria Beach which leads to a pristine beach! It is a large attraction for sunbathers to enjoy the beautiful day. With colorful waters flanked by cliffs and golden sands, it is an irresistible hideaway spot. Snorkeling is a fun activity available, especially for those who love the colorful marine life. Make sure to bring snorkeling gear, water, snacks, and sunblock! Prior taking a dive, we recommend to first check the sea conditions to ensure a safe snorkeling experience.
The wonderful beach of El Chileno is the perfect spot for a day full of sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling! Right off Hwy km 14, you will find an enormous parking lot, which ends at the entrance where a wide wooden ramp connects you to this fabulous beach! Before going back to your car, you will be able to refresh in the newly made showers located at the entrance besides the ramp. Do not forget your water, shade, and gear.
No wonder why the beautiful Palmilla Beach, has become the favorite spot of many, and it is because this Beach has it all! Starting with a swimmable beach with soft waves that makes it fun just to be in the water, a close by coral reef to snorkel and the traditional panga boats that park right on the beach after returning from catching the fish of the day! Let’s not to forget the shady free palapas available when you get there early.
Friends, today is a beautiful day in San Jose del Cabo and spectacular waves here at the famous Costa Azul beach! We came to chat with David Adrade, Owner of “Surf In Cabo” Tour Company. David has 22 years of experience in this exciting activity.
Hi David!
Good morning, welcome!
Tell us: How did “Surf In Cabo” originate?
“I am from the City of Puebla, Mexico. I came to Los Cabos for the first time before 2000, but it was not until 2002 that I decided to move here permanently.
“Summer of 2002 I started surfing and I immediately got hooked
“Before opening ‘Surf in Cabo’, I worked in different surf schools for 7 years.
The decision to open my own Surf school was decided in 2009. It was a difficult year financially for many but I decided to take advantage of the newest technology available. For example, I was one of the first surf businesses to use a website to accept reservations and payments through PayPal. I used the small amount of money I had to start my own Surf Tour Company in May 2009.
I started with few resources, but with a lot of intention, and it wasn’t until June that my business started to take off and I received my first few reservations.”
I started as a tour company but the demand for classes was too strong, so I decided to hire some instructors. Soon after, the owners of the land entrusted us with our beachfront location as long as we were to protect it and keep it clean to promote the family atmosphere that’s loved today. ZOFEMAT authorities are a huge help to cleanse and guard the beaches.
Nowadays Costa Azul offers an excellent atmosphere with many tourists and local residents who come to surf, sunbathe on the sand, or eat at the nearby restaurants
What can you tell us about your activity in Costa Azul?
Here at Costa Azul, we have waves that break practically 365 days a year. The breaking points are naturally marked on each cliff, each point, and inlet. Consistent waves are evident by the erosion of the rocks at the bottom. On Costa Azul beach, our rocks cause the waves to form in different directions as the swell comes. But Because the bottom is quite rocky, this beach has the most constant waves that you’ll find in Baja California Sur.
Overall, Costa Azul is a safe zone with few people, great weather, and waves all year round, such as; Zippers, Middles also called Pescadito, La Roca, and Acapulquito, which are perfect waves for beginners.
What can you tell us about the waves in the Pacific area?
“The Pacific also has its charm with very interesting breaking points, but the busiest is Cerritos beach. The tide there is stronger and there are not as many waves for beginners, unlike what Costa Azul offers. We take groups of intermediate students to Cerritos. Advanced students have the option to go on tours to Cerritos and other points in the Pacific that are not easily accessible but offer incredible waves with very few people.”
If there is something that really captivates me about surfing, it is the focus you have to have in the water. With waves the size we have today, you cannot be distracted. As soon as you enter the water everything changes, you leave your earthly life behind..
What would you recommend to someone who has never surfed, but has the desire or intention to learn?
“Firstly, knowing how to swim gives you a lot of confidence. In terms of age, weight, and size there are no restrictions. Anyone who has the desire to learn can try it!
My recommendation is: try it, preferably take classes with a surf school on a beginner’s level beach.”
If you go alone, ask the local surfers before getting in the water, because they know the sea conditions of the area better than anyone
And finally, tell us what services ‘Surf in Cabo’ offer.
Our services include:
-Surf and Paddleboard classes.
-Tours in Costa Azul, East Cape, and on the Pacific side.
-Renting surfboards, paddle boards, beach chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling gear.
“We offer free safety information about sea conditions and tides for all foreigners whether they surf with us or not, our motto is… ‘Safety First’”
“ “ “ “ “ “ “ “
David, thank you very much for having My Cabo Companion Magazine today!
Amigos, If you desire to ride waves, there is no safer way than doing it with the experts at ‘Surf in Cabo’!

How do you describe the sensation of surfing?
A mixture of dopamine and thrill that you receive the day you catch your first wave and the adrenaline of always having to be alert.”

SURFER’S HUB
A surfers paradise since the 1950’s, Los Cabo’s beaches was the location the first Northern Baja surfers decided to travel to in search of warmer waters. What did they find? Nothing less than stunning beaches, great point breaks to catch waves all year round, friendly villagers, fresh fish for delicious tacos, and of course, cold beer! The best and least crowded months to catch great waves in Baja Sur are during March through May. The perfect conditions for surfing however remain through November.

Is considered the pioneer of all activities in Los Cabos. It was back in 1945 after WW 2 when veterans discovered the over 200-pound Marlins and the many species that inhabit the waters of Cabo San Lucas in the Sea of Cortez. This activity became pivotal for the economic growth of this region and it has become known as “The World’s Capital of Marlin.” Nowadays it is called Land’s End which is where they host the biggest fishing tournaments for those who love Cabo’s Sport fishing.
It only took Jack Nicklaus to visit Los Cabos in the early 1990’s, for Los Cabos Golf courses to take off and soon be ranked among the World’s 100 Best Courses (excluding U.S. courses) by Golf Digest in 2018. The signature course designers did not waste the stunning ocean views in almost all of their holes. Los Cabos Golf courses nowadays enjoy an unprecedented golfing boom, which does not seem to stop!

All of the choices available offer great food, drinks, music, and of course snorkeling adventures. The Santa Maria bay and El Chileno reefs are the best spots for a great snorkeling experience!

Take a break at one of the Beer or Margarita bars to cool off from the heat while you shop.
Art Walk
San Jose del Cabo
The Art Walk became a must do activity in Los Cabos when… 12 international gallery owners decided to sponsor and organize the Art Walk which made it become an event that now takes place on Thursdays, from 5pm to 9pm for everyone to enjoy!
This event grew exponentially over the weeks and the local authorities eventually had to close the streets for visitors to walk peacefully while enjoying the art, music, food, or to gather for a glass of wine / beer among the artists and locals.

Located on the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula Sur, only an hour away from two of the most visited tourist destinations of Mexico (Los Cabos and La Paz), we find Todos Santos. A region that once was inhabited by Guaycuras and Pericues tribes, has now been nicknamed “Magic Town.” This name was given in 2006 by Mexico’s Tourism Bureau, due to it being rich in Ancient Culture and Architecture.
Photos by Ira GulewichTodos Santos’ charm makes it a must-visit spot for travelers from all over the world. Since it is conveniently located between the two most important local destinations, it offers a great opportunity for the perfect road trip. But all three are worth a stop when traveling to either La Paz or Cabo’s international airports. Vivid streets, colonial architecture, tranquil atmosphere, famed art, culture, music, and delicious food are what you can experience during your visit or stay in Todos Santos.
Todos Santos is known for its yearly festivals that draw the attention of many. They have festivals for Jazz, Art, and Cinema annually. A new Mango Festival will take place in July, which includes a “Mangate Contest’’. This is an event where Todos Santos locals compete with their best recipes made from the endemic fruit known for its delicious flavor and meaty consistency.
Historically, Todos Santos dates back to 1733 when the Jesuit Mission of Our Lady of El Pilar was founded. Another historical building you can still visit today is the Manuel Marquez de Leon Theater, which was built by General J. Mugica on February 5th, 1944. This building has a unique architectural beauty and acoustic characteristics that can’t be found in any other Mexican town. Nowadays, the Manuel Marquez de Leon Theater is the location of the Todos Santos Art Festival and the international festival of Latin cinema. These festivals take place every year during February.
The inviting streets of Todos Santos are colorfully decorated with Mexican garlands and surrounded by 17th-century Hacienda style buildings. Every corner becomes the perfect spot for a photo shoot! Walking around the peaceful town is an experience you won’t want to miss. Especially if you are looking for a wonderful shopping trip or a real culinary experience. Todos Santos is complemented by its lively art, plentiful markets, and signature restaurants that offer unique delicious recipes to make up the romantic atmosphere that occurs every sunset.
If you enjoy naturistic activities, you would adore Todos Santos’ stunning sunsets that can be enjoyed at La Cachorra Beach, bird watching at the estuary of La Poza Oasis, turtle releases where up to 45,000 baby turtles are released during August through March, and great surfing opportunities at Cerritos Beach, where International tournaments take place. Todos Santos is full of exciting events, festivals, and activities all year round.

The exchange rate varies every day, we strongly recommend using the local ATMs so you will be able to withdraw money at the best exchange rate possible with minimum fees. Some ATMs will give you the option of the desired currency you want to exchange for whether it be Mexican Pesos or US dollars.
We strongly recommend trying to use your credit cards where accepted because many of them do not charge fees for using an alternate currency. But, it is always recommended that you carry some cash. This is because there are many places that only accept cash such as; street shacks, flea markets, or beach souvenir vendors. It is handy however that most of these cash only locations will accept US dollars or Pesos. Keep in mind that paying in Pesos is better when it comes to the exchange rate to avoid a lower rate.
The major local Banks are: BBVA, CITIBANAMEX, BANORTE, HSBC, SCOTIABANK and SANTANDER. Much like in the United States their regular working hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and some even operate until 2 pm on Saturdays. All of them have ATM machines inside their establishment available 24 hrs. We strongly recommend being cautious before, during, and after your transactions inside of the ATMs. It is always better to use the buddy system when extracting large sums of money.
If you are going for a walk in Mexico, please always watch for cars in any area, since drivers tend to not always follow driving rules. We recommend that you follow proper safety guidelines for crossing the street. Please find the proper crossing paths and be mindful of the cars around you. Los Cabos is ranked as one of the top safest tourist destinations in Mexico, but it is important that you try to stay within the tourist boundaries. For nightlife outings, we strongly recommend using your hotel taxis or pre-arranged private transportation. The drivers are very friendly, knowledgeable, and bilingual. They will be happy to keep an eye on you while you have fun until you’re ready to go back to your hotel.
If you are planning on renting a car for your trip, there are plenty of car rentals available to you. You can mainly find them within the premises of the airport but some companies even have branches in the main cities. Driving in Mexico can be a little challenging at times due to some reckless drivers, but it mostly works the same way that you are familiar with. I recommend just following the proper driving rules and being mindful of the drivers around you. As long as you pay attention to your surroundings you will arrive at your destination safely.

Gas stations work a little differently in Mexico. The big difference is you never have to pump your own gas. There are gas station workers that will do that for you at no extra cost. You can pay for your gas with cash or with your credit/debit card. Most of the time the gas station worker will be happy to clean your front windshield, check your oil, or check your tire pressure if asked. Keep in mind that if you do ask for this, the gas station worker might expect a tip for their extra work. It will make them happy for them to receive a tip, it will be greatly appreciate it.
