What to

CURRENCY

The local currency is the Mexican Peso although US dollars and major credit cards are accepted in most places. The exchange rate varies every day, we strongly recommend using the local ATMs so you will be able to withdraw money at the best exchange rate possible with minimum fees. Some ATMs will give you the option of the desired currency you want to exchange for whether it be Mexican Pesos or US dollars.

CREDIT CARDS OR CASH?

We strongly recommend trying to use your credit cards where accepted because many of them do not charge fees for using an alternate currency. But, it is always recommended that you carry some cash. This is because there are many places that only accept cash such as; street shacks, flea markets, or beach souvenir vendors. It is handy however that most of these cash only locations will accept US dollars or Pesos. Keep in mind that paying in Pesos is better when it comes to the exchange rate to avoid a lower rate.

BANKS & ATMS

The major local Banks are: BBVA, CITIBANAMEX, BANORTE, HSBC, SCOTIABANK and SANTANDER. Much like in the United States their regular working hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and some even operate until 2 pm on Saturdays. All of them have ATM machines inside their establishment available 24 hrs. We strongly recommend being cautious before, during, and after your transactions inside of the ATMs. It is always better to use the buddy system when extracting large sums of money.

STREETS WALKING

If you are going for a walk in Mexico, please always watch for cars in any area, since drivers tend to not always follow driving rules. We recommend that you follow proper safety guidelines for crossing the street. Please find the proper crossing paths and be mindful of the cars around you. Los Cabos is ranked as one of the top safest tourist destinations in Mexico, but it is important that you try to stay within the tourist boundaries. For nightlife outings, we strongly recommend using your hotel taxis or pre-arranged private transportation. The drivers are very friendly, knowledgeable, and bilingual. They will be happy to keep an eye on you while you have fun until you’re ready to go back to your hotel.

DRIVING

If you are planning on renting a car for your trip, there are plenty of car rentals available to you. You can mainly find them within the premises of the airport but some companies even have branches in the main cities. Driving in Mexico can be a little challenging at times due to some reckless drivers, but it mostly works the same way that you are familiar with. I recommend just following the proper driving rules and being mindful of the drivers around you. As long as you pay attention to your surroundings you will arrive at your destination safely.

GAS STATIONS

Gas stations work a little differently in Mexico. The big difference is you never have to pump your own gas. There are gas station workers that will do that for you at no extra cost. You can pay for your gas with cash or with your credit/debit card. Most of the time the gas station worker will be happy to clean your front windshield, check your oil, or check your tire pressure if asked. Keep in mind that if you do ask for this, the gas station worker might expect a tip for their extra work. It will make them happy for them to receive a tip, it will be greatly appreciate it.

THE NOBLE GIANT

Their food is made up of the smallest organisms in the sea!

The Whale sharks feed through a water filtration system, which suck in large

quantities and filter through their gill crests. Their main food consists of phytoplankton, krill, nekton and small crustaceans, such as crab larvae and squid. They have very small teeth that do not play any major role in their diet.

They call them The Noble Giants.

Whale sharks, despite their

intimidating size, are totally harmless and very peaceful animals. The speed of their movement when swimming is only 3 km/h or 1.86 miles per hour. Nor do they have patterns of interaction with the humans like dolphins or whales, since the Whale Sharks,

Are they Whales or are they Sharks?

The Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus) definitely belong to the Shark family, because due to their large size, they are often

confused with whales. Unlike whales that use lungs to breathe, the Whale sharks absorb oxygen from the water through their gills.

They are the largest fish in the ocean!

The average size Whale shark that can be found in the bay of La Paz are from 5 to 15 meters. The largest Whale shark

ever recorded was 18.8 meters or 62 feet. Their large size can be compared to a school bus and it is estimated that they can live up to 100 years.

although they detect us when we swim at a certain distance from them, we are not of their great interest. This allows us to swim with them to admire their beauty and the softness of their character.

Where can we find them?

The Whale sharks can be found in all tropical and subtropical

oceans of the world, as they migrate long distances solely in search of food. The Bay of La Paz, located in the Baja California Sur Peninsula, has a geographical location that allows perfect conditions for the production of their precious food between the months of October and April, where up to 40 specimens of this majestic fish can be observed in shallow waters.

In recent years, this activity of swimming with the Whale sharks has become one of the most predominant tourist activities in the destination, which is why today they are duly protected and regulated by numerous conservation and government organizations, which have established strict rules for all nautical operators in the bay. Their main responsibility is to care for and preserve the good management of the activity so these wonderful species always return.

SURFER’S HUB

A surfers paradise since the 1950’s, Los Cabo’s beaches was the location the first Northern Baja surfers decided to travel to in search of warmer waters. What did they find? Nothing less than stunning beaches, great point breaks to catch waves all year round, friendly villagers, fresh fish for delicious tacos, and of course, cold beer! The best and least crowded months to catch great waves in Baja Sur are during March through May. The perfect conditions for surfing however remain through November. Although, it remains a comfortably warm beach all year round due to the Southern swells hitting the Mexican shores bringing in warm water. Winter offers great surfing conditions on the Pacific side, when the Sea of Cortez gets flatter and well suited for relaxation.

It was back in 1945 after WW 2 when veterans discovered the over 200-pound Marlins and the many species that inhabit the waters of Cabo San Lucas in the Sea of Cortez. This activity became pivotal for the economic growth of this region and it has become known as “The World’s Capital of Marlin.” Nowadays it is called Land’s End which is where they host the biggest fishing tournaments for those who love Cabo’s Sport fishing. It only took Jack Nicklaus to visit Los Cabos in the early 1990’s, for Los Cabos Golf courses to take off and soon be ranked among the World’s 100 Best Courses (excluding U.S. courses) by Golf Digest in 2018. The signature course designers did not waste the stunning ocean views in almost all of their holes. Los Cabos Golf courses nowadays enjoy an unprecedented golfing boom, which does not seem to stop!

Whale Watching

Cabo San Lucas is known as one of the best places in the world to see Grey and Humpback whales. They begin to leave their Arctic feeding grounds in Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington State, during September and October, migrating south along the coastline to breed and calve in Baja California, Mexico. Every winter, during the months of December through April, thousands of whales arrive to the warmer waters of Cabo San Lucas. Humpbacks are seen putting on incredible acrobatic displays, both from the shore and on a boat trip, sometimes at a stone throw distance.

AMexican-Japanese fusion restaurant called Tei Sushi was founded by the gastronomically intelligent chef, Alan Alexander Martinez Villafuerte, who I had the pleasure of getting to know today.

How was Tei Sushi born?

“Tei Sushi was born on Valentine’s Day about two years ago. I always loved the kitchen due to me being influenced by my mom’s restaurant. Following her footsteps I studied gastronomy but eventually specialized in Japanese food because sushi has always been my favorite.”

“I didn’t know much of Japanese cuisine but with tips from mentors, I invented flavorful dishes and created my own menu. My team and I put so much love into our dishes, it is also thanks to them that we are the Tei Sushi everyone can enjoy.”

“Villafuerte may sound familiar as its the shared last name of an inspiration in the hospitality and food industry, Araceli Villafuerte Feliciano, owner of Jazmin’s Restaurant. Araceli’s kitchen gave Alan the heart to continue with the culinary tradition.

Tei Sushi

A chef with a twist Exclusive interview

Tell us about the food you serve in Tei Sushi!

“ We serve Japanese-Mexican style food. Our menu has many sushi rolls and hot dishes with sauces and toppings that give it the Mexican flare we are well loved for. We also just added 20 new ramen dishes.”

Tell us what makes Tei Sushi different from the rest?

“We have the best quality ingredients, delicious signature recipes, wonderful atmosphere, and excellent service that makes everyone feel at home.”

What inspired Tei Sushi’s decor?

“I spent hours traveling and researching Japanese landscapes. My findings inspired the tree scenery and the bushes on the ceiling.”

The music is also part of the atmosphere experience we offer.

What is your seating capacity?

“Thursdays we are busy due to the Art Walk, so we often reach our comfortable capacity. On our second anniversary, February 14th, we opened the new expansion of our venue that includes a patio and a terrace fitting up to 200 customers! Perfect timing for a romantic Valentine’s night. Customers overlooking the terrace enjoying the magical Pueblito scenery. It made me happy to see my customers excited with the new terrace.”

Were there obstacles in establishing your restaurant?

“Honestly, I haven’t suffered much difficulty, at least none I couldn’t overcome. I’ve always been very responsible, organized, and strict with my team and I.”

This is thanks to my mother, a pillar in my life, who always gave me exceptional advice, and unwaveringly supported my brother and I.

What is the house speciallity?

“The ‘Araceli Roll’ is the star of our menu! We also have the ‘Cristian Roll’ and ‘Alexander Roll’, for my brother and I. Us 3 are on the Menu!”

Alan, thank you for having My Cabo Companion Magazine today! We can’t wait to visit your new terrace!

Fiorenza Restaurant

An Italian corner in the heart of San Jose del Cabo

Exclusive interview

“In our walk through town, we found a jewel of a place. Located in a little corner of the Historic Center of San Jose del Cabo. Its name is “Fiorenza Restaurant” and to our surprise, we found a little piece of Italy in it! A place of authentic and exquisite Italian flavor with a beautiful atmosphere and excellent attention to detail.

Let’s talk with General Manager, Cristian Martinez Villafuerte, who grew up with a wonderful restaurateur background. He will be telling us about his charming venue and what makes it so special. Cristian, thank you for having My Cabo Companion Magazine!

Tell us, when and how Fiorenza Restaurant was born?

Good afternoon and welcome Nelly!

“Fiorenza Restaurant was born 12 years ago and its first owners were an Italian couple who were friends of ours. They started it in a tiny place in another sector of town, then they moved to Plaza Jose Green, where we are located now .

Once here, they started with only two out of the four commercial spaces on the ground floor. Since then, we’ve taken 2 more areas that include an enclosed saloon with A/C, the kitchen, and a bar on each side of the central patio terrace.”

“ Back then there were only 7 tables, but we’ve been expanding little by little since we took their offer 5 years ago.

“Wow! 5 years went by fast! I remember this place, but nothing like it is now. You’ve certainly done a great job with the decoration!

I see you have an excellent taste and added an Italian touch to each corner. I love it!”

Araceli, what inspired you to begin the wedding events here at Jazmin’s Restaurant?

There’s nothing more cheerful than hearing “Vivan los Novios!” or “Long live to the Bride and Groom!.” Let’s talk with Araceli, the heart of Jazmin’s restaurant, her sales manager Javier Gomez Bedolla, and the head chef Carlos Arista Olvera, so they can tell us what they have to offer in their colorful venue.

“I think what inspired me was the passion I have for gastronomy, the decor, along with our restaurant gaining popularity and evolving. Innovating has been very important, in my eyes, it’s never a bad time to try something new. I got the idea after a friend of mine asked me to host her wedding event. Everything turned out so beautifully and perfectly which gave me the passion to do it for others as well”

All I do, I do with all my heart and I give thanks to God for the creativity He has gifted me with.

“Also the demand of events has grown, so we now offer to cater events in larger venues, which has made us a versatile choice in the wedding planning arena.”

What different sections do you have in the restaurant and what’s their capacities?

“ We have the Terrace where we can host small events of up to 15. It is a beautiful area that overlooks the street. You can enjoy the colorful banners and people watch, especially on Thursdays, when the Art Walk makes it highly requested.”

Javier, tell us about the different table arrangements you offer for weddings!

“Most weddings we have at Jazmin’s are traditionally Mexican but we’ve had all kinds of theme requests. We have a wide repertoire of props to choose from, but Araceli and I love working with new and unique wedding ideas!

Javier, tell us about the cocktail pairings you offer with the events.

“We have all the Spirits there are, from Mezcals, Tequilas, Rums, Whiskeys, Vodkas, to Liqueurs, etc.

“Our Bar section seats 25 people, it is very entertaining, and customers enjoy watching our Mixologists prepare rare artisan drinks.

““Our Patio seats 60 people, it is also our most popular section for weddings especially, because it is nicely decorated with a Mexican background, lots of greenery, and has 2 different levels that makes it feel authentic.

We also have an enclosed A/C saloon that hosts 80 people. It serves best for larger events. The decor is dedicated to the Mexican Revolution with a ceiling full of colorful Mexican garlands.”

Our special cocktails are usually made with the fruits in season! We even offer family friendly mocktails.

We also have wines and other rare mixes we often garnish with edible flowers that make them both attractive and delicious.

Chef Carlos, what menus are most requested for weddings?

“The majority are Mexican, we have the taco stands and other service stands like hand made tortillas, taquizas, and tacos al pastor. We’ve made menus that include: white and red meats, fish, and seafood, but if they have any special requests.

We’re pleased to adapt to the taste of our customers.

Araceli, What are your near future plans?

“At our sister restaurant, Tei Sushi, we recently designed an expansion that now includes a patio and an exterior seating area. To celebrate the second anniversary we are planning to add a wide variety of ramen recipes and want to implement grill tables where customers will be able to cook meat cuts and shrimps at their own table.”

Well, amigos, we want to thank you for having My Cabo Companion Magazine today!

The truth is that Jazmin’s Restaurant never fails to impress us for its beauty, delicious food, and excellent attention to detail. If I could recommend one place in the Art District, it would have to be Jazmin’s, especially on Thursdays during the Artwalk (5:00-10:pm).

See you soon at Jazmin’s Restaurant.
