ALLOCATION OF ALPINE GRAZING RIGHTS (BÄRGRÄCHNIG)

A day for haggling and feasting. Before the start of the Alpine summer, farmers get together at the Spring Market in Adelboden to finalise cattle grazing rights.

Countless spectators line the epic route to cheer ambitious runners as they climb 800 vertical metres on their way up to Silleren.

All of Adelboden’s a stage. Comedy, artistry and music create a circus atmosphere at this unique spectacle taking place along a car-free Dorfstrasse in the heart of Adelboden.

Tasting, strolling, dining. During this gastronomic week of indulgence, the humble berry in all its forms characterises the programme for the entire destination.

SWISS CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Prize-winners from the Orpheus Competition and international ensembles guarantee a unique atmosphere at the old-Gothic church in the centre of the village.

HIKING PARADISE

Hiking Paradise The Adelboden Alps are a stage – so curtain up! Of course, with this panorama around you, no one is staying in their seats. Here the observer plays the leading role when exploring the mountains on foot. The performance – featuring chamois, jackdaws and marmots - ranges from the awe-inspiring teeth of Tschingellochtighorn to the energetic roar of Choleren Gorge. Entry to this Oberland performance? Simply show your hiking pass on local buses or mountain lifts.

Feast for the eyes

HIKING TIPS Hörnliweg The gentle climb, simple twohour route, timeless farmhouses, and a south-facing slope make this circular trail close to the village extremely attractive. But the real highlight has to be the two lookout points at Hörnli and Taubenfels. Here the view sweeps out from the Niesen mountains across the whole Engstligen Valley.

Floral Trail (Blumenweg) Alpine roses, spring gentian, or mountain violets? If the imposing panorama were not reward enough, this gentle, one-hour, elevated trail between the cable car stations on Silleren and Hahnenmoos promises the visitor an abundance of Alpine flora.

TIP

Bergläger–Bütschi– Hahnenmoos This simple mountain hike takes you through pine forests, across Alpine meadows and past shepherds’ huts to Bütschi, the home of the legendary Vogellisi. After two hours, the horizon finally opens up at the top of the pass between Adelboden and Lenk.

Adelboden–Schermtanne–TschentenAlp Cool forest air, aromatic Alpine herbs and sun-drenched lookout points make this walk above the village of Adelboden an experience for all the senses. In less than three hours, you reach the crest of the «Mountain of Views», which at 1950 m (6400 ft) above sea level affords uninterrupted views across the valley end.

SUNRISE FROM BUNDERSPITZ Active early-risers with headlamps are rewarded after a two-hour climb from Bunderalp.Gaze in awe as Lohner’s neighbour provides an unforgettable morning panorama.

Boden–Unter dem Birg– Waterfall This traffic-free walking path really goes against the flow: The 90 minute walk takes you out from the picturesque village upstream along the path of the mountain brook to the foot of Engstligenalp where the foaming waters cascade powerfully before your eyes and ears.

Hiking Summer The yellow globe-flower blooms here. This is the stony Gsürweg path. Local Alpine cheese is made there. Whenever we give the mountain world a name, it becomes tangible, alive and unforgettable. But it’s the seasoned locals who know these names best.

On themed hikes, these experts literally open your eyes to a diversity that would otherwise remain undiscovered by the edge of the path. Dive deeply into the world of Oberland nature and culture on a guided tour around Adelboden.

Summer Sports Contrary to gravity, the mountain peaks once fought their way into the sky. Today, active visitors can make it easier for themselves by racing down the valley by motorless scooter (Trottinett) or up again by e-bike. It is also practical that outdoor activities in Adelboden complement those available closer to the village. There are places for boulder climbing and swimming in the mountains, but also close to your chalet. The same applies to ball sports, which can also be enjoyed just as much above the tree line as in the heart of the village.

WORTH VISITING

Worth Visiting Cholerenschlucht Solid steps and bridges in the rock connect this 100 m long formation. Imposing waterfalls and countless water mills are only some of the attractions to be seen on this visit. Another not-to-be missed attraction is Pochtenkessel, a natural geological rock funnel at the point where the Engstligen and the Otterebach rivers flow together.

Alpine Garden Around 500 varieties of flowers and herbs, over 400 of them marked, and all at 1500 m / 4921 ft above sea level. In the Höreli Alpine Garden, the diversity of Adelboden’s flora is in full bloom. Of course, these Alpine plants are especially beautiful from June to September, but a visit at any other time is also worth the effort.

Engstlige Falls From the high plateau of Engstligenalp, the waters cascade 600 m (1968 ft) into the valley below. This second highest waterfall anywhere in Switzerland is a natural spectacle in a class of its own and has been subject to a cantonal protection order since 1948. Whether on a circular trail, mountain tour or climbing route, from a bus or cable car cabin, this majestic natural wonder is waiting to be discovered.

Hostalde Suspension Bridge For walkers with a good head for heights, the riverside path from Rohrbach to Frutigen has a special adventure in store.

High above the ground, this is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Europe. But the Brücken-Beizli (restaurant), various natural playgrounds and the alluvial protection are also good reasons to take a break on your journey along the Engstlige River. Hängebrügg-Beizli is closed on Mondays.

Tropenhaus Frutigen The Tropical Hothouse in Frutigen is an attractive destination and plays a prominent role in using renewable energy in the Alps. from the South: via Domodossola–Iselle–Simplon– Brig–Goppenstein, then carby-train service Lötschberg (Goppenstein–Kandersteg). From Kandersteg follow the main road to Frutigen–Adelboden.
