EDITORIAL Access to water is a fundamental human right. What we take for granted in our latitudes is a cause for conflict in other parts of the world. However, many visitors may not be aware of one thing: in 1931, local residents were denied entry to the new “Gruebi” swimming and sunbathing site in Adelboden. Over time, such bans have of course long since ceased to exist, just as all the aquatic

For example, when I was young, it was at Siebenbrünnen, Lenk, that I first plucked up the courage to hold the hand of the girl I was dating at the time. And what a plea

Swimming lengths, jumping from a diving platform, sunbathing in front of the pavilion – the outdoor facility which opened in Adelboden in 1931 with a fifty-metre swimming pool, circular children’s pool, five-metre diving platform and music pavilion was an architectural masterpiece. For this reason, at the end of 2017, the local community voted to resurrect the complex as faithfully as possible. The new, “old” Gruebi baths with a climate-neutral, fifty-metre pool heated to 26 °C once again radiate cool elegance. The diving platform and the pavilion bring it to life. Both facilities were privately sponsored. What was still remaining was carefully restored or replaced in the original style. Examples of this are the original tiles in the children’s showers or the small, colourful drinking fountain by the changing rooms. The same applies to the old bathing chairs and sun loungers made of tubular steel. The pools now glow in the same fresh

Berries are a force of nature and the blueberry in particular. This blue fruit cleans blood vessels, strengthens the immune system, improves vision, increases oxygen uptake, boosts memory, reduces depression, has anti-aging effects and enhances performance. Many studies suggest that the blueberry is a “superfood”. In the Färmeltal Valley, Rosmarie Anthamatten from the Alpenrose restaurant also loves these berries. She grew up with her many siblings in modest circumstances and for the children it was part of their autumn routine to go blueberry picking on Sundays. As a reward, there was a cup of blueberries covered in delicious local cream. Even today, this is considered pure luxury.

A LOOK BACK | From the picture archive

FLASHBACK BERNESE BATHING CULTURE OVER THE YEARS Around the year 1800, there were about sixty mineral baths in operation in the canton of Bern – from the simplest taproom to the medically assisted spa. Gurnigel and Weissenburg were to achieve an international reputation during the 19th century – the former offering bathing luxury to over 500 guests by 1890. Today there are only the remains of walls and two outbuildings at Gurnigel – its high spa culture harking back to bygone days. Bad Heustrich in the Kandertal Valley, on the other hand, continued to provide cures. Meanwhile, Bad Lenk with the “Lenkerhof” is the only Bernese mineral bath dating back to that time. The metamorphosis from spa to gourmet spa has succeeded in this case. A good number of hundred-yearold rooms were renovated at the Lenkerhof last April – three layers of plaster walls were removed and the rooms given an elegant makeover.
