Making Herstory!

The inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States will mark the commencement of the four-year term of Joe Biden as president and Soror Kamala Harris as vice president. A public ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, January 20, 2021, on the West Front of the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The event will be the 59th presidential inauguration. Upon his inauguration, Biden will become the oldest president at 78 years and 61 days, older upon taking office than Ronald Reagan, who left office at 77 years, 349 days. He will also become the first president from Delaware (although he was born in Pennsylvania), second Catholic after John F. Kennedy, and the fifteenth former vice president to serve as president. Soror Harris will become the first woman, first African American, first Asian American vice president, first member of any black Greek organization, and first member of Alpha Kappa Alpha to hold this office. Soror Harris will recite the following oath: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God. Biden will recite the following oath, as prescribed by the Constitution: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God. No exact air time has been announced just yet, though opening remarks historically take place around 11:30 ET/8:30 a.m. PT. The inauguration is likely to be streamed by every major news station, in addition to being shared on platforms like Facebook Live, Twitter and YouTube.

LET’S WEAR OUR PEARLS AND PREPARE TO CELEBRATE THIS HISTORIC MOMENT 4 STYLE! AKA

Greetings,

Isaiah 43:19 NLT “For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” Happy NEW YEAR Sorors, Welcome to your new day, new beginnings, new health, new opportunities, new attitudes, new life, new you, new year! I know you can see it…just look at all of the new pathways Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Mid-Western Region have created to meet the many changes and challenges of 2020, and in preparation for the demands of 2021. We have learned how to navigate the unchartered waters of virtuality by hosting a virtual Boule and Regional Conferences, virtual elections, chapter and committee meetings, virtual Vendor Fairs, parties and games, virtual fundraisers and EAF challenges. Proudly, the operations and functionality of our beloved sorority remained upright and on course. We zoomed our way straight to the top! Sorors, the New Year promises to be a fantastic ride, full of many whistle-stops and excursions. I encourage you to stay aboard the Pearl Express and ride with me. I am excited to welcome aboard all of the new chapter officers and to challenge each of them to embrace their new position and all of the expectations. Looking ahead, the Pearl Express will soon be the Northbound Express: Celebrating Our Spirit of Excellence, as preparations for our first complete virtual 91st Mid-Western Regional Conference, are underway. Stay tuned for registration information and plan to get your seat. This will count as Regional Conference attendance for MIP sponsorship and for some chapter requirements. Sorors, we will stop to observe our International Founder’s Day/Sisterly Relations Day on January 15, 2021 and our Impact Day/MLK Day of Service on January 18, 2021. We will also continue our Prayer Line on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 6:00 pm CST. Stay tuned for important information regarding the opportunity for the 2021 Modified Membership Intake Process for both Graduate and Undergraduate Chapters. Finally, as we move forward into the new year, let us give thanks to the many blessings we have received in 2020. Our beloved sorority is healthy and stable. Our sisterhood is strong and mighty. And the first black female Vice President of the United States is our own Soror Kamala Harris. Sorors, HE continues to open doors and make pathways for us!

"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” -Martin Luther King, Jr

Ministry Moments COVID POEM When this is over, may we never again take for granted A handshake with a stranger Full shelves at the store Conversations with neighbors A crowded theatre Friday night out The taste of communion A routine checkup The school rush each morning Coffee with a friend The stadium roaring Each deep breath A boring Tuesday Life itself.

When this ends, may we find that we have become more like the people we wanted to be we were called to be we hoped to be and may we stay that way--better for each other because of the worst.

A SALUTE TO OUR ESSENTIAL WORKERS “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

Essential Workers

Dr. Angela Felton-Coleman

Join us in paying tribute to the lives and work of our essential workers. While we realize that not every essential worker is captured in this tribute, please know that our intention is to honor ALL whether their photograph is included or not. This is a small gesture to continue to acknowledge your bravery, committment and perservance to do your jobs. Together we issue a powerful call for transformation in honor of the people that we’ve lost and to fight for the working people who are essential to our economy and society. These essential workers are disproportionately Black and other women of color, immigrant, and other communities in the margins. We have a responsibility and opportunity to create an inclusive future that ensures that everyone is treated with dignity and respect–through raising pay and workplace standards, improving safety, and increasing worker power in the workplace. We Salute You and Stand With You!

“We must come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience.” ― Martin Luther King Jr. 12

Xi Tau Omega Thank you to our brave breast cancer survivors who shared their heartfelt stories during Xi Tau Omega's virtual event on Saturday, October 3rd. Target II Chairman Shellie Diehl moderated the program, emphasizing three clear messages : 1) how important it is to get regular mammograms to give yourself the best opportunity for early detection of cancer, 2) a diagnosis is NOT a death sentence. With the help of the medical professionals, you should start your treatment plan immediately, and 3) surround yourself with a support group that includes family and close friends who will be there throughout your journey. #AKABreastCancerAwarenessDay

Caregivers IMPACT Day

Xi Tau Omega Chapter Members and Caregivers Soror Lynne Boyer (Top Left), Soror Juanita Bush Davis (Top Right), Soror Melanie Jefferson (Middle Left), Soror Anjanette Hogan (Middle Right), Soror Renita Shelton (Bottom Left) and Soror Sheila Jones (Bottom Right). During this year’s Caregiver Impact Day, Xi Tau Omega honored chapter members who serve as caregivers to their loved ones. We recognized these sorors for their roles as caregivers during the chapter’s November meeting and gave them a special gift of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. Sorors Melanie Jefferson and Lynne Boyer, both Silver Stars and Life Members, shared their personal stories on the chapter’s social media accounts. “I have been a caregiver for my mom since January 20, 2019. It has been pretty rough, but I am managing. I just had to put her in hospice care this last week so hopefully I can get a little bit more assistance” said Soror Melanie. When asked how she practices self care, Soror Melanie references her walking crew, also known

30

as her fur babies, who were featured in the video with her. “We walk every day, along with Soror Melina Johnson which helps keep me grounded. I make sure that I work out and exercise every day. I like the fact that caregivers’ day has brought more awareness to everyone around you. Now, sometimes people will call, text or say I am just thinking of you. That is what has impacted me the most. I am so proud that Alpha Kappa Alpha has taken the time out to recognize something that we take for granted. I am proud of the sorority for doing this and I am proud of myself for being able to take care of my mom.” Soror Lynne Boyer serves as a Caregiver to her 96 year old mother who is also a Soror. Sorors Lynne and Juanita, both members of Xi Tau Omega are sisters who share in the responsibility of caring for their parents alongside their other sister, Soror Nadine Varella. “To have our sorority have this national impact day to honor and celebrate caregivers, it warms my heart and speaks to why we are such a loving and nurturing organization. We take care of our own. The one thing that I want to stress and that we have done is to make sure that we take care of our own selves. We don’t burn ourselves out because it is a labor of love and at times it is very hard when you see your parents not able to do for themselves,” said Soror Lynne. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with AARP, more than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member or friend during any given year and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one. The Caregiver Action Network provides many resources for caregivers as well as a free help desk. Sorors and community members can contact their Care Support Team, staffed by caregiving experts, to help find the right information needed to help navigate the complex caregiving challenges by calling 855-227-3640. Thank you to all of our Soror Caregivers. We appreciate and salute you for all that you do!

Connections

What Do You Know About the League of Women Voters? The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League was officially founded in Chicago in 1920, just six months before the 19th Amendment was ratified. The League provided a way for women to overcome their lack of confidence about voting and a means for becoming educated about voting. From its beginning, the League has been a non-partisan grassroots organization whose leaders believed that citizens should play a critical role in our democracy. Today, the League continues to fight for election protection, democratic reforms, and equal access to the ballot-all the while maintaining its commitment to non-partisanship and fostering an informed electorate. If you ask why I should support the League of Women Voters, think about this principle: government of the people, by the people and for the people cannot function without active involvement of the people. The League of Women Voters is a unique, non-partisan organization that is a recognized force in molding political leaders, shaping public policy, and promoting informed citizen participation at all levels of government. We believe in keeping elections free, fair, and accessible. Supporting the League means you are part of creating a change in our democratic republic. We are, after all, neighbors first and foremost. In April 2020 I accepted the role of president in the League of Women Voters in Lawton, Oklahoma. I have accepted membership in the City of Lawton Race Relations Commission, and as a potential member on the board of the Lawton Food Bank. I have authored and published three letters to the editor of our local newspaper on voter education, participated and partnered with other agencies at Census and Voter Registration Drives as a citizen of Lawton and the League of Women Voters, and worked to promote continuity of CDC guidelines for COVID-19 at work and public settings.

Mid-Western Region Showed Excellence in Virtual Programming

Programs

What a year we had in 2020! Yet, our Mid-Western Region Chapters arose to Program Excellence on a “virtual” platform! Thank you sorors for all your hard work in adapting to the virtual programming in Outstanding EXCELLENCE! There are three very important Impact Days coming up in the next few weeks that you want to plan for now, “J15” our 113th Founders’ Day, MLK Day of Service, and our annual “Pink Goes Red For Heart Health”! I can feel the excitement and look forward to seeing and hearing about your service during January and February 2021! As we jump into 2021 with a solid foundation of “virtual” programming, let’s look forward to a new year of Program Excellence by continuing to collect shoes for the Soles 4 Souls partnership, eyeglasses for the Lions Club International and sew pillowcase dresses and shirts for refugees! We do such important work and our service in these areas is even more crucial during this pandemic. A soror from my chapter once eloquently stated, “Service is who we are and Service is what we do!” This year you took the challenges of conducting programs virtually and came up with creative ways to accomplish great things! I applaud you for a “Job Well Done” and look forward to your continued Programs of Excellence in 2021!

Virtual Pink on the Greens Success

Submitted by Soror Nichelle Rogers, Mu Omega Omega Ivy Leaf Reporter Pink on the Greens has been a Mu Omega Omega in-person golf clinic for 10 years, and this year’s event adapted to the changing times caused by the pandemic. Led by Soror Denise Caleb and the Ivy Community Fund, this year’s virtual event shifted to a speaking engagement followed by an online MAC Cosmetics virtual party and auction. Our speaker, Angella Reid, shared her journey and experience in the field of hospitality management, as she became the first woman and ninth person to manage the day-to-day operations of the White House as Director of the Executive Residence and Chief Usher. Overall, the event had about 40 attendees and raised $4,011.43 towards our scholarships and grants.

Iota Beta Omega School Outreach For Iota Beta Omega, 2020 marks 50 years of service to all mankind in the Colorado Springs community. In continuing a legacy of service, the chapter donated $500 each to three local schools. With Fall 2020 being such a unique start of the school year, sorors of Iota Beta Omega welcomed the opportunity to give. With the donation, Fox Meadow Middle School purchased school uniforms for families in need. French Elementary and John Adams Elementary provided new school supplies. Due to social distancing protocols in place, individual supply sets are an essential and costly need for many budgets at this time. Each school expressed gratitude and commended the chapter for partnering in a time of need.

Wednesday’s event included a special video message from Soror Dedra Chavis, from Mu Omega Omega Chapter, about maintaining good mental health. Although Wellness Wednesday is typically used to focus on women’s health and wellness, sorors agreed that it is extremely important at this unprecedented time to encourage individuals to work on their mental health. For Thursday’s Global Impact target, we gave a number of tips on indoor gardening as we believe that home gardening is a fun way to grow your own produce and practice sustainable living. On Friday, we highlighted the prestigious HBCU Grambling State University (GSU) with an Instagram post providing a few facts about the college and encouraging viewers to seek more information about GSU. For the final day of Skee-Week, our sorors connected over a movie and snacks, a members-only virtual sisterly relations activity.
