Happy Holidays Sorors! 2

Together In Purpose and Spirit Greetings Sorors! As the Pearl Express heads into the home station to recharge and refuel during this holiday season, I’d like to take a moment to reflect. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause, because Together in Purpose and Spirit, we have boldly and successfully hosted our fall regional and chapter activities. Delta Chapter at the University of Kansas started us on a fast track with the Undergraduate Roundup. All chapters held numerous community service projects and chapter retreats. Iota Zeta Omega Chapter (Cluster B and C), Iota Beta Omega Chapter (Cluster A) and Alpha Alpha Alpha Omega chapter (Cluster D and E) hosted us in fine style at our annual Cluster Meetings. Membership intakes and chapter elections are winding down for a short winter break. I am very proud of our accomplishments; however, Sorors, our work is not yet done. I strongly encourage you to start preparations for your End of Year Reports now! I remind you again, that while the website is always open, if you wait until December 31st to enter your reports, you might find the system unavailable, resulting in you missing the deadline. Let’s work smart and efficient Sorors. The Pearl Express remains on track and headed for bigger and greater challenges. Sorors, I am looking to you to welcome our new sisters aboard and embrace them in sisterly love. All aboard, Sorors, for our next great whistle stop excursion: DESTINATION: EXCELLENCE: 90TH Mid-Western Regional Conference in Norman, Oklahoma, March 18-22, 2020. Hope to see each of you there! Sisterly yours always, Soror Twyla

Ministry Moments The Magnificent Mid-Western Region

Ministry Moment – December 2019

by Soror Mary Madison, Iota Zeta Omega Chapter, Des Moines, IA The Lord said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 I read an article about young children telling lies, asserting that all children lie sometimes. I remember my daughter sending me a video of my granddaughter at just three years old, with a chocolate ring around her mouth. She was moving her head from side to side saying, no, I didn’t eat the chocolate cake. We can all laugh and give a gentle reprimand to the three-year-old for lying. How many of us adults have lied and lied in such a way that someone was hurt by our untruth? How many of us have compromised to get something we wanted even though we knew it wasn’t the right thing to do? We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but praise be to God who is full of mercy and whose grace abounds. God doesn’t hold us guilty forever, but God does require that we make a change, and with that change, we grow closer to the image of the One who cares so much for each of us. Just as we don’t bring up the chocolate cake to the child into their adulthood, God does not hold us guilty, for as in the scripture selection God says “My grace is sufficient for you. I have had mercy and wash your slate clean of any offense.” God knows the places we are weak, and in those times and situations we lean on the Lord, and God becomes our strength. God knows you by every hair, and every thought; nothing is hidden from God.

Reflections & Remembrances Ivy Beyond the Wall Diamond Soror

Marie Louise Anderson Greenwood

Just nine days short of her 107th birthday, Diamond Soror Marie Louise Anderson Greenwood, a charter member of Epsilon Nu Omega Chapter, passed away on November 15, 2019. A life-long educator and published author, Soror Greenwood made history when she became the first African-American woman to land a teaching contract with Denver Public Schools in 1935. She broke racial barriers again in the 1950s when she became the first black teacher assigned to an all-white elementary school in Denver. Soror Greenwood retired after 30 years with Denver Public Schools and in 2001, the school district named Marie L. Greenwood Academy for her. In 1932, Soror Greenwood was the sole initiate in Alpha Kappa Chapter, a city chapter that includes the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Denver. In 1949, she was among the 29 college-educated women who charted Epsilon Nu Omega. Outside of teaching, Soror Greenwood was involved in social activism through the Cosmopolitan Club, an interracial group dedicated to breaking down segregation in Denver in the 1940s. Soror Greenwood had been active in the Phillis Wheatley Branch of the YWCA, a member of the Denver Symphony Guild Tour Guides, a charter member of Mountain and Plains Assembly, #49, Order of the Golden Circle, and a member of the Coterie, a study club. She is reported to have been the first African-American woman to ski on Colorado’s mountain slopes, and continued to ski until she was 74 years old. In 2010, Soror Greenwood received the Martin Luther King Trailblazer Award and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree at the University of Northern Colorado and an honorary doctorate from Denver Urban Studies and Adult College. Soror Greenwood is preceded in death by her husband, William Rivers Greenwood, Sr. She is survived by daughter Soror Louise Yvonne Greenwood Phipps, sons Richard Joseph Greenwood, William Rivers Greenwood Jr., and James Lee Greenwood, and six grandchildren. In a video to commemorate Alpha Kappa Chapter’s 90th anniversary in 2018, Soror Greenwood advised sorors that, “the will of God, if you live right, is going to help you, it will keep you going.” Soror Greenwood truly exemplified being supreme in service.
