Happy Holidays Sorors!

Together In Purpose and Spirit Sorors, I would like to share a story in this issue: Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox. Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!" As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her. But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said harshly, "when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside the package!" The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there. In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold. As we celebrate the holidays and remember our loved ones that were called to glory this past year, I wish everyone the kisses of love, peace and hope. God Bless you all. Sisterly, Twyla 3

An Unhurried Holiday "So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger." Luke 2:16 (NIV) "Hurry up! We're going to be late to the choir concert!" "Come on kids. Help me unload these groceries right now. I've got to get these cookies baked before bedtime." "Is it 6 A.M. already? I gotta get to that door buster sale as soon as it opens so I don't miss out on the deals!" With the holiday season upon us, the music at the mall announces that folks are dreaming of a white Christmas.

hurried off to find Him lying in a manger. If I had been one of those shepherds, I would have been quiet and amazed once I got there. Being around a newborn baby makes me speak in a hushed tone and feel such awe as I see new life. In the presence of Jesus I wonder if those men too were settled and silent. Maybe we could do the same today. In the midst of our holiday hustle and tasks, we could stop, we could slow down long enough to hurry in another direction. We could put our activities on hold so we might quietly meet with our Lord. We could be settled and silent in the presence of Jesus. As a result we just might discover an unhurried holiday: a season that will strengthen us spiritually instead of sapping our energy and joy.

As a result, our calendars become overloaded, crowding out the spiritual significance of the season. I wonder if the participants in the original Christmas story ever dreamed that the celebration of Christ's birth would become so hassled and hurried. The shepherds? The angels? The wise men? Mary and Joseph too? Was hurriedness present the night Jesus was born? We might think that it was not. But actually, there was hurry present that night. However, it wasn't to the mall or grocery store that people were rushing. The shepherds were working in the fields when suddenly an ensemble of angels told them the Christ Child had been born. Luke 2:16 says they

7

How about it? Will we pause and purpose to hurry into His presence instead of rushing from task to task? Dare we linger long enough to be refreshed by the company of the One whom the holiday is really about? Yes, Jesus is the real reason for this Holy Season. Dear Lord, remind me daily that it's You I should rush to during the holiday hustle. Not things. Not activities. I want to seek and find only You. This I pray in In Jesus' Name, Amen. ~Spiritual Oversight Committee

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Alpha Kappa Chapter

90th Anniversary Celebration

Greeley, CO -- Alpha Kappa Chapter recently commemorated its 90th Anniversary with a weekend celebration in Denver and Greeley in November. The Alpha Kappa Around the World event concluded with a bench plaque dedication outside the University Center at the University of Northern Colorado – the first Greek-lettered organization to be so honored on the campus. The chapter was chartered November 9, 1928 at the University of Denver and the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, which was then known as Colorado State Teachers College. The Greeley institution did not allow blacks to join any student organizations. Undaunted, eight courageous young women who were students at the teachers’ college and the University of Denver chartered the chapter: Soror Gladys Butler, Soror Doris Jenkins, Soror Frances L. Ross, Soror Annie Laura Jackson, Soror Alice Kinchelow, Soror Fannie Pitt, Soror Florida Pitt and Soror Roselle Parsons.

21

Alpha Kappa was the first chapter of the sorority in Colorado and now encompasses five universities in the metro Denver area. Former members flew in from other states and drove miles to come together to celebrate. The weekend began with a Friday evening reception at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library in Denver, where historical artifacts of the sorority were on display along with exhibits of the history of blacks in Colorado. At the Saturday luncheon at the University Center in Greeley, Soror Jane Pigford, the daughter of charter member and Ivy Beyond the Wall Soror Florida Pitt, enthralled attendees with stories of the chapter’s challenging early years, when the university refused to recognize their high scholastic achievements. Alpha Kappa eventually earned the Silver Cup scholastic award in 2003.

Mu Omega Omega Chapter hosted its signature Pink on the Greens event at Murphy Creek Golf Club in Aurora, Colorado. This event, in partnership with the Ivy Community Fund, gave attendees in our community an opportunity to learn the best golf practices from the pros! Clinics included instruction and practice in the areas of pitching, chipping, putting, and full swing. Following a slightly competitive clinic (one lucky guest received an award for Most Improved), a delicious lunch was served to the women while our Chapter Basileus, Evetta McMillian-Walker, offered a few closing remarks. Funds raised from this amazing event will help provide educational scholarships for students and benefit local community organizations. It was another awesome chapter event!
