Coaching Staff

Bethany Poppe

head coach

Poppe enters MountainView Prep after an impressive 17 seasons leading the boys’ and girls’ programs at Byrnes High School. A former collegiate player at Newberry College, where he competed for four years, Poppe has turned her experience into a steady coaching career.

She began coaching in 2011 in New Jersey and also spent two years coaching in Ohio before returning to South Carolina. At Byrnes, she guided multiple competitive teams and saw three of her players continue their careers at the college level.

Poppe has been selected twice to coach the North/South All-Star Tournament and has earned four Region Coach of theYear awards. Her combination of playing experienc d l t d d f hi brings valuable leadership to the

Seagle joined MountainView Prep with one of the most accomplished résumés in South Carolina tennis. Over his career, he has guided teams to a combined 525–100 record, producing consistent success and player development.

He began coaching in 1999 with the Gaffney girls’ program before moving to Boiling Springs in 2002 to lead both boys’ and girls’ teams. In 2013, he took over at Spartanburg High, where his teams became a state and national powerhouse. Under his leadership, Spartanburg captured three national championships (2016–2018) and seven state titles (six with the boys, one with the girls).

A retired PE teacher in District 7, Seagle has also been selected to coach the North/South All-Star Tournament five times, earned 11 Region Coach of theYear honors, and developed 10 college tennis players. His teams have also claimed 15 region championships during his career.

MVP Tennis and the SCHSL

At Mountain View Prep, our tennis story is just beginning — but every first serve, every rally, and every long match connects us to a tradition that has been unfolding across South Carolina for decades.

Tennis in the SCHSL Found Its Stride in the Late 1960s and 1970s

The South Carolina High School League didn’t always keep neat records of its tennis championships, but the earliest stories point back to programs like Travelers Rest winning a boys’ title in 1969, Rock Hill following in 1971, and T.L. Hanna launching a run of dominance in 1974. For the girls, the first officially recognized championship we can trace came in 1987, again from T.L. Hanna. These schools laid the groundwork for what tennis in our state would become.

The Era of Organized Records

By 1980, the SCHSL began publishing Palmetto’s Finest, a record book that finally put tennis alongside football, basketball, and other headline sports. From that point forward, champions were logged, legacies were preserved, and the sport gained the recognition it deserved.

The Mystery of the First Match

And yet the very first official SCHSL tennis meet? Still a mystery. No clear record tells us exactly when or where that first ball was struck under League play. Maybe that’s part of what makes the story special. Like a good rally, the point is still hanging in the air, waiting for the next shot.

Where MVP Fits In

For Mountain View Prep, joining SCHSL tennis means stepping into this living history. While we may not yet have the long list of championships that schools like T.L. Hanna or Bishop England can boast, we’re writing the first lines of our own chapter. Years from now, someone may look back at these pages and say, “That was the start of something.”
