ROUNDTRIP

W/ EVAN C

Hailing from Oklahoma City. DJ Evan has established himself as a DJ/Producer/Remixer that delivers definitively smooth grooves. From DJ Sets to production work, Evan’s favor for the flavor of funk is apparent. Join us as we go on a “Roundtrip” with DJ Evan C.

6 | MUSIC

Your approach to music is comprised of jazzed synths, funk influenced basslines and silk blends. Would you consider that your signature sound? My sound consists of many different styles and influences. If it makes me feel good, I play it. I love jazz and soul, so my style often reflects that either in my live sets or in productions. I want my music to have a certain “funk” to it, so I’m often drawn to sounds that feel like they could have been played live. To me there’s nothing better than a silky rhodes piano that washes effortlessly across a bouncy bassline. Throw in some cool vocal chops and I’m a happy man. From Production to Live DJ sets, your delivery is perpetually consistent, creative and illustrative. What is your process when picking out tracks to play? When picking out tracks to play I have several approaches. Sometimes I want to play a more subtle role in my mixing and focus the attention of the crowd not toward me, but rather the atmosphere of the venue. So if I’m playing a patio set you might hear something a little more laid-back and atmospheric perhaps with some latin influence. If it’s a dark club with a large sound system and a full crowd in attendance, you might hear more techhouse and progressive styled beats. I always try to be fluid in my approach, as last minute changes are always to be expected when playing live. Where do you find the inspiration for your Round Trip mix sessions? The “Round Trip” series is a personal vacation for me when it comes to mixing. I often incorporate many sounds that I might not typically play at a live venue. My goal is to take the listener on a journey where their mind can relax and not have to think about too much. The

grooves are very atmospheric and chill which is a reflection of where I want to take the listener. I try to make mixes that people can listen to at home or on their headphones and enjoy with a glass of wine or whatever else floats your boat. Harmonic mixing is essential with these mixes as I try to create a sense of not knowing where one track has ended and the other began, eventually the mix comes to an end and hopefully the listener feels like the story or journey has come to an end. Your “Alone in a Crowded Room” is an excursion into chunky, funky, melodic house. How did this track come about? “Alone in a Crowded Room” was written rather quickly actually. I found some vocal samples in Logic (which I use to produce), had some old bassline samples that I cut together, created the main melody and before long I realized I had something worth finishing. Often times my productions are more on the deep/ chill side of house, so this is just another perspective of that feel. Where can Muve Mag Readers catch one of your live sets? Right now I’m playing Robotic Wednesdays at Kamps. I’m the resident on the patio outside so when the weather is nice you can come out and hear a little taste of what my sound truly encompasses. The flavor is very Miami/Ibiza which to me is the perfect companion to patio grooves. I make regular appearances at Frequency Night Club in Bricktown which is another one of my favorite spots to play. Add me on facebook to keep up-to-date with all my gigs, and you can download my music on soundcloud as well. Thank you! ______________________________ facebook.com/djevanc soundcloud.com/evanevanc

48

HOURS TO

LIVE with Falkirk

8

You just found out that you have 48 Hours to Live. What’s your first thought? My first thought would likely be, “Finally! I’ve been waiting for this since I was 18... what took you so long, Death... busy pissing about in the old folks homes, picking off easy targets?”... actually, would probably be closer to me crying in a fetal position for at least the first 10 of those 48 hours. How do you want to go?

Scottish National Football team during the World Cup. Scotland have this terrific track record for getting knocked out during the first three matches. I thought, what a great way to go...diving header at the back post in injury time to get Scotland into the next round for the first time ever. Having hit my head on the upright, slipping into a coma to never awake. Then I thought, that’s fucking stupid... do it in the final against England! All that’s probably dumb, too. I’d just want to go peacefully, like in my sleep or something non-frightening or painful.

I used to have this fantasy of playing for the

MUSIC | 9

Do you have any deathbed confessions? “To all my friends who thought I slept with their mom’s when we were kids... I did. I’d say i’m sorry, but i’m not.”

Peanut Butter Cups, Fruit Mentos and to wash it all down, a couple of Orange Rehab Monsters and a Coca-Cola Slurpee from 7-11. Who delivers your Eulogy?

What’s your last meal? Steak (medium) and huge baked potato, with loads of butter, cheese and bacon and a tube of Pringles Pizza Flavoured Chips. Desert would be Vanilla Ice Cream with half a bottle of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup, a Snickers, King Size Reese’s

10 | M U S I C

First choice would be Hitler, but only because of how passionate he was while giving speeches. Since that’s not plausible, maybe Hugh Jackman dressed as Wolverine or Rose McGowan...dressed as Wolverine.

What are people saying over your casket? “I can’t believe he slept with my mom”. “I’m never going to get that money back that I loaned him” “I can’t believe he’s being buried with his comic books and teddy bear”. “What kind of fucking asshole has Hitler give their eulogy?”. What Band is playing your funeral and why?

Bad Religion with the London Symphony Orchestra. Why? Musically, it would bring together two of my favourite things: Punk Rock and the sweet eloquence of Twilight and Harry Potter. What does your tombstone header say? Respawn in 3...2...1... ______________________________ facebook.com/djfalkirk soundcloud.com/falkirk

SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE

W/ DJ2K Brazen, Bold and Authentic. DJ2K reignites the allure of the party rock DJ. We recently caught up with 2K at his new DJ perch at Social Nightclub. Here’s the scoop... 12 | M U S I C

You’ve recently started sporting a #2keezus T-shirt. What’s the story behind it? Well it’s no secret that I’m a huge Kanye fan and I’m a fan of his antics and just everything that he does. With all the controversy that was stirred up with the title and lyrics off of his new cd I thought I would make light of it and take the same approach. This is just a ploy to generate a small buzz but in a comical way. It actually worked in my favor because after posting a pic with the words blurred out a lot of people came out to Social just to see what the big fuss was about. But really I feel like an innovator sometimes. I was told i have one of the most recognizable logos around because its posted on so many

shirts that people are walking around with from giveaways from different shows and events. We live in a digital age where twitter, instagram, Facebook, etc are filled with hashtags now and with one click everyone can see whats linked to it. So hash tagging #team2k #2keezus #2kfam or even #teambunnyslippers sends people directly to anything involving DJ2K when they click on it. Mass Marketing is free and one hashtag can be the difference in how many people know who you are. #2keezus, sounds like a Kanye West reference. Are you a fan of his latest album “Yeezus”? I love the album. It actually hasn’t left my

CD player since it came out and when I’m not in the car I’m playing it on my iPhone. I don’t even look at is as a hip hop cd. Its a CD of artist expression. Overall the cd case is pure genius. a clear cd case with just a piece of red tape one it. Thank you Kanye for showing the industry how to cut out the overhead and capitalize on the little revenue thats generated from actual CD sells. No colorful booklet. No poster on the inside. Just music made the way its supposed to be. It really reminds me of the old DJ Paul and Juicy J mix tapes that used to float around Memphis. Just a

white maxell tape and a typed up sticker. Hip hop at its finest. You’ve recently become the resident DJ at Social in Bricktown, Oklahoma. How did that come about? As cliche as this sounds, I was just in the right place at the right time. The owners and managers were wanting to take the club in a different direction with Vegas Tegas leaving to pursue other things. They already knew what I was capable of doing because just maybe a year ago

I placed second in their DJ Warz and also come in to Rok Bar for a couple of guest spots. I submitted them mix after mix and even came down and played for them when the club was closed. During that session i played everything from trap, EDM, Top 40, old Skool hip hop, and also let them throw songs at me while i mixed them in. You could call it a DJ gauntlet. i pride myself on being able to read any crowd and work a room flawlessly. They gave me one night to see what I could do and the rest is history. Have you always wanted to be a DJ? I have 3 uncles who are djs. Then, I didn’t want to follow suit. I was originally a rapper with a group called G.N.B. in Memphis, TN. We put out a few tracks and did some shows but after about 3 years ,I decided that it wasn’t for me. I worked at Americas Pub in Bricktown. I manned the lights and Emceed from time to time. it was there that I was given the opportunity to learn how to play records. But not only that I also learned how to work the mic and successfully move the crowd. Once I got up enough money I bought my own equipment and spent all my free time perfecting my skills. I think what shocks people the most is the fact thate I’ve only been a career DJ for about 2 years and i’ve accomplished so much. Such as DJing Norman Music Festival twice, Spinning at SXSW, placing Second in my first DJ battle, and obtaining about 7 residencies. When did you know that this was the profession for you? Honestly within the past year. I’ve always had a love for music. From the moment I started djing I thought to myself “yeah this is a cool way to make some money doing something that i like.” I’ve also

M U S I C | 15

gotten to the point that I feel that behind the tables that I’m happy. It’s my release from issues that I deal with on a day to day. Sometimes its the only thing that keeps me sane. I feel something different when i’m behind the tables that at times seems spiritual. But that might be all the Jager flowing through me. Describe your DJ sets from the eyes of the viewer. Extremely high energy. This isn’t just a set where the DJ spins records while talking to his friends next to the dj booth and texting. It’s banger after banger. Super Clean mixes. Where else in the city will you see the DJ stand on the dj booth or the rails and hype the crowd. This is a Vegas or Miami set in OKC. I’m actually about to start dropping weight so i can stage dive. But my energy has been compared to Lil Jon when i get into

16 | M U S I C

a zone. But thats just my opinion. Seeing is believing i guess. What’s next for DJ 2K? I really don’t know. i was asked that one before and my response was “All I really want to do is get established as a well known local DJ.” I want to get a good following and possibly do more out of state gigs. I am already set in my regular job and I have a family to take care of. I can’t say if I didn’t get a big break that i wouldn’t take it but i can’t sit and wait for that. I am a 32 year old Sophomore DJ. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Honestly I just want to continue doing what I do best and that’s be the best Husband, Father, and DJ that I can be. ______________________________ facebook.com/dj2kokc soundcloud.com/dj2kokc

We

all pull inspiration from many things, our moments of clarifications that echo through our soul. It is the reason we want to make ourselves better, and to have a more meaningful balance for life. We all have things that make us want to change. There are two defining moments in my life that greatly impacted who I am becoming today. Both very different from each other and both lit a small spark inside of me. That have turned into a bursting flame. Most people look at me and know that I am driven but the level that I am driven is something that no one can measure or comprehend except myself. Every morning I was awakened by my father walking into my room opening my blinds, singing and telling me to rise in shine it’s a beautiful day. I can just hear it now and it made me so angry that he was so happy in the mornings when all I want to do is just sleep. This Sunday morning was different, I remember him walking over to my bed shaking me softly and saying ‘Ashley, wake up your mother and I need to talk to you in the kitchen.’ Going through my mind were all the possible things that I was getting in trouble for. Sleepily, I

walked to the fridge, grabbed the milk and a box a cereal. I turned to see my mom and dad both sitting at the kitchen table. ‘GREAT.’ I thought. ‘I must be in some deep shit.’ No one said a word as I hopped up onto the kitchen bar placing my feet in the chair. The rest of the morning was a blur, to be honest. Time froze in place when my father told us he had cancer. I didn’t even know what to say or think. At this point in my life I hadn’t known anyone who had cancer. The next few months were all kind of squashed together. We wanted to walk around and act like nothing was wrong but inside we all knew. I remember hearing my mom yell at my father telling him to be strong, to fight and to never give up. His weak body sat on the sofa and my mom was persistent in making him eat. Through the entire trial my mom held our family together. She took over his business and ran it as if he never left. She took care of our multi acre ranch feeding the horses and taking care of the dogs. Everyday I watched her overcome fear and prevail through MODEL: JAY BUFKIN

the darkness, desperately searching for the light at the end of this tunnel. Six short months later, it was my Father’s birthday. I found myself setting in the kitchen once again with my father and mother, but this time a hospital bed replaced our kitchen table. Holding my father’s hand my mom read a passage through the Bible, at that moment I watched at my fathers pulse fade and his breathing subside. The greatest lesson my father taught me wasn’t while he was living, but after he was gone. His presence and time on earth echoed through the lives of many. After his passing I learned about so many things he did to help others without anyone even knowing. I simply learned that a mans’ greatness is not by the depth of his pockets or the size of his garage, but by the richness of his heart when no one is looking. I wanted to be that person. I wanted to live by those principles and build from that foundation. It reminded me that my time left here on earth is not guaranteed and to never to let a day pass short of success. So I began to build my brick house on a firm

foundation. To leave behind much more than a girl that can snap a killer photo, or have the perfect lines. Of course I want that magazine cover and I want to be the best in anything that I do‌ I was born competitive. As athletes and anyone in the athletic industry we have the ability to lead hundreds to a better way of life. If you can have that impact on just

one person then why not? Stand for more. One day all of my trophies will have dust on them and the magazines, well they eventually get tossed in the trash. When its all gone the only beautiful thing left is the heart. ______________________________ facebook.com/ashleyhornerfitness www.ashleyhorner.co
