With a history unique among world cities, Hong Kong’ s cultural heritage makes for a singular and compelling story for locals and visitors alike. The city ’ s dynamic contrast between the traditional and the ultra-modern provides ample inspiration for audiences to appreciate its enduring legacy. And what better way to accomplish this than to transform heritage sites into ad hoc concert stages with thematic programs and new works inspired by the history of the venues themselves!
Since 2013, Musicus Heritage has brought world-class performers to various places and settings in Hong Kong, thereby situating the music in the specific historical and cultural context of the surroundings. With support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, we embarked on an exciting new chapter in 2019 with the Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Alive programan extended series at Tai Kwun, a center for heritage and arts located in the restored Central Police Station compound, and other heritage venues of note. In addition to site-specific concert performances, the new series is enhanced with artist residencies and educational events designed to benefit concert audiences, students and the community at large.
Having met with a positive response from audiences and the community, Musicus is supported by funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in summer 2022 for another three years, with the project named as Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories . The new series invites composers and artists from other art forms to participate, presenting new perspectives on historical sites. The series also includes heritage guided tours, artist residencies and school tours designed to benefit concert audiences, students and the community at large.

The program kicks off in November 2022 with concerts at Tai Kwun and Tao Fong Shan on the theme of perseverance. The concert at Tai Kwun features new work by a young composer who has done a residency to get inspiration from the architecture and history of the complex, while at Tao Fong Shan there will be an exhibition and a sharing about the craft of Cantonese porcelain by Guangcai porcelain artists.

We hope you enjoy this remarkable heritage journey!

Patience and perseverance have been vital in giving people throughout history the fortitude to overcome adversity.
Trey Lee brings together an outstanding group of musicians for this Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories series of concerts in the historic surroundings of Tai Kwun, the former Victoria Prison. The theme of the series is “Perseverance”, and features music by a number of great composers who each battled hardship during their lives––Arensky and his addictions to alcohol; Messiaen, who was interned in a prison camp in the Second World War; Schubert and Schumann, who grappled with mental and physical illnesses; and Dohnányi, who went to great lengths to save Jewish musicians during the Holocaust.
Alongside these musical stories from the past will be the premiere of Musicus’ Call for Scores winner Eason Chan’s new composition, which charts the history of Tai Kwun’s prison chapel in various incarnations. The piece showcases the historical setting of Tai Kwun, bringing the former prison to life and serves as a fitting metaphor for Hong Kong’s spirit of perseverance.
All concerts will be held at JC Cube, with Shing Chun-hay as emcee.

A liminal passageway with curious church-like murals. A space so easily overlooked, this was once the main entrance of the entire Tai Kwun complex. Walled up over time, due to the complex’s expansion, it became a chapel for inmates, a sanctuary of the mind. As the years went by, the murals were painted over, and the space converted into an unidentifiable room.
The many roles and uses this space have taken on oddly echo a person’s personality throughout their life. The once proud and egotistical main entrance; the lost and reflective chapel seeking peace of mind; the forgotten space with a colorful past.

Through its many iterations and responsibilities, it continues to stand. This tiny space adapted and served its multiple purposes.
The three movements delve into the psyche of these personas, exploring these different states of mind. Celebrating and wishing upon the city its perseverance and adaptiveness in times of change.

As a founding member of Chinese Music Virtuosi, a 6-member Chinese instrumental ensemble that performs new and traditional works, Loo has performed at the Garden Festival in Warsaw, Poland, the Melbourne Festival in Australia, Singapore Arts Festival, Buenos Aires International Music Festival in Argentina, New Vision Festival of Hong Kong, and the Chinese Composers’ Festival, among others. The group has also commissioned over a dozen new works, which include works that score for both Chinese and Western instruments.
A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Loo’s sheng teachers included Chen De-ren and Cheng Tak-wai and he has also taken flute lessons from Timothy Wilson and Chan Kwok-chiu.

Eason Chan is a musician and composer whose work bridges genres ranging from contemporary classical, film scores and jazz to pop, R&B and indie. Having graduated in 2020 from Hong Kong Baptist University majoring in contemporary composition, Chan currently works full-time writing film music under award-winning composer Day Tai. Since 2019, he has contributed to a number of local film and TV productions, such as the hit ViuTV series Leap Day, 940920 and the films Ready or Knot, The Way We Keep Dancing, I Still Remember, and Zero to Hero, the latter two of which Chan also provided the piano arrangements for the theme songs.
Chan is active among the local jazz scene, having played in the Happy Go Lucky Big Band, Hong Kong Youth Jazz Collective and he also founded the Laminar Quarter. Chan has performed at venues such as Tai Kwun, Lau Bak Livehouse and at the Freespace Jazz Fest in 2020 and 2021.

Chan is also interested in indie and pop music. He is a collaborator on the upcoming album of local independent artist Lester Lam. Chan produced the first single off the album Shadows, which was released earlier last year.

Musicus Society was founded in 2010 as the vision of cellist Trey Lee to become an international music organization with quality performances and world-class home-grown artists. It is a Hong Kong registered charity with the Hon. Tung Chee-hwa as Honorary Patron.
The Society’s mission is to promote cross-cultural collaboration of music internationally between top local and overseas artists through performances and by nurturing the next generation of talent. Each year, the Society presents three major programs:
Musicus Fest
An international partnership for world-class artists to collaborate, showcasing our exceptional artists and working with our young talents to bring their artistry to new heights.
Musicus Heritage
In addition to the objectives of Musicus Fest, Musicus Heritage enhances the public’s knowledge of our culture and history by presenting music programs that reflect their heritage settings.
Musicus Inspires! is an educational program that aims to cultivate young talents from all social backgrounds. The initiative provides training and performance opportunities for emerging artists with great musicians, such as the “Call for Scores” for young composers, the “Young Artist Audition” and the “Ensemble Training” for instrumentalists. It also organizes “School Visits“ for students to explore various aspects of music.
Musicus Soloists Hong Kong gathers the best of our next-generation artists led by Musicus Society's Artistic Director, with the aim of becoming a leading chamber ensemble representing Hong Kong.
