With a history unique among world cities, Hong Kong’s cultural heritage makes for a singular and compelling story for locals and visitors alike. The city’s dynamic contrast between the traditional and the ultra-modern provides ample inspiration for audiences to appreciate its enduring legacy. And what better way to accomplish this than to transform heritage sites into ad hoc concert stages with thematic programs and new works inspired by the history of the venues themselves!
Since 2013, Musicus Heritage has brought world-class performers to various places and settings in Hong Kong, thereby situating the music in the specific historical and cultural context of the surroundings. With support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, we embarked on an exciting new chapter in 2019 with the Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Alive programan extended series at Tai Kwun, a center for heritage and arts located in the restored Central Police Station compound, and other heritage venues of note. In addition to site-specific concert performances, the new series is enhanced with artist residencies and educational events designed to benefit concert audiences, students and the community at large.
Having met with a positive response from audiences and the community, Musicus is supported by funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in summer 2022 for another three years, with the project named as Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories . The new series invites composers and artists from other art forms to participate, presenting new perspectives on historical sites. The series also includes heritage guided tours, artist residencies and school tours designed to benefit concert audiences, students and the community at large.
The program kicks off in November 2022 with concerts at Tai Kwun and Tao Fong Shan on the theme of perseverance. The concert at Tai Kwun features new work by a young composer who has done a residency to get inspiration from the architecture and history of the complex, while at Tao Fong Shan there will be an exhibition and a sharing about the craft of Cantonese porcelain by Guangcai porcelain artists.
We hope you enjoy this remarkable heritage journey!
From Norway to Sha Tin: A Musical and Visual Journey Through Time
Hong Kong has caught the imagination of many a traveler, but few as much as that of the Norwegian missionary Karl Ludvig Reichelt (1877–1952), who came to China and founded the celebrated Christian center Tao Fong Shan in Sha Tin.
Inspired by the fascinating history of Tao Fong Shan, Musicus presents an unprecedented series of concerts at the celebrated heritage site. The series features pieces by the greatest composer of Reichelt’s homeland, Edvard Grieg, whose work Peer Gynt chronicles a journey from the Norwegian mountains to the North African desert. Musicus’ Artistic Director, cellist Trey Lee, and his awardwinning international musicians from Canada, France and Hong Kong will also perform other works inspired by travel––Dvořák’s journey to America, and Kodály’s expeditions around rural Europe collecting examples of folk music.
It promises to be a remarkable experience, also featuring an exhibition of porcelain specially made for this concert series by porcelain artists, and a pre-concert guided tour of the complex. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience incredible music in a setting that resonates with the perseverance of the Norwegian missionary who built this Hong Kong institution.

Well known among Christians as a spiritual retreat venue, Tao Fong Shan (TFS) also enjoys a reputation as a porcelain producer in Hong Kong. Decades back, quite some young Buddhist monks converted to Christianity in TFS. To help them make a living, TFS lets them learn porcelain hand-painting as a survival skill. In 1947, TFS established an official porcelain studio, which would use Guangcai (Canton porcelain) hand-painting techniques to produce decorative housewares such as china plates, tea services and table lamps. The products carry a special style that blends Chinese culture with Christian art.
Presented by Musicus Society and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories is a 3-year project from 2022 to 2025 by which aims to celebrate Hong Kong’s history with music through concerts and engaging artists from other art forms to participate, presenting new perspectives on historical sites.
The concert in TFS also features a porcelain exhibition displaying the works produced by Yuet Tung China Works and Tao Fong Shan. Amongst are two porcelain plates specially commissioned for this event produced by Yuet Tung China Works to reflect the history of TFS, in memory of the long journey of the Norwegian missionary who founded TFS many years ago. Other works include a new series created by TFS’s artist-in-residence Lam Duen Shan Ming for TFS Porcelain Workshop, named Sing Hallelujah to the Lord collection, wishing all believers to remind themselves of the reasons to be hopeful and joyful in Christ in their everyday life. Besides, there are also works by Yuet Tung China Works under the categories of Journey and East meets West and other traditional Guangcai style porcelains.
Studied science at Baptist College (now Baptist University) in his early days, Tso Chi-hung is now the third generation of Yuet Tung China Work. After studies, by inheriting the family business and the traditional Guangcai porcelain-painting skills, he devoted himself to work in his family business. He has more than 50 years of experience in porcelain painting and is currently one of the Guangcai porcelain masters in Hong Kong.

In 2005, Martina Tso graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a first-class honors degree in Design, majoring in design culture studies and visual communication design. Tso then pursued her master of comparative literature degree at the University of Hong Kong and worked in TV production after her graduation. Aiming to inherit the family's traditional craft, she has been devoting to Guangcai porcelain-painting design in recent years. She also served as the fourth-generation successor in the Yuet Tung China Work founded by her great grandfather Tso Luichung with a history of nearly 100 years, hoping to inherit the traditional craft.
