ABOUT THE JOCKEY CLUB MUSICUS HERITAGE STORIES

誼樂社自2019年獲香港賽馬會慈善信託基金捐助,拓展全新的「賽馬會樂 憶古蹟」計劃。此計 劃於聯合國教科文組織紀念《世界遺產公約》五十週年活動「2022全球世界遺產教育創新案例獎」 國際分享會中,在全球近百個案例中脫穎而出,獲得「卓越之星」獎項,成為三十個獲獎案例之一。

於2022年,誼樂社再度獲香港賽馬會慈善信託基金撥款捐助推出「賽馬會樂.憶古蹟人.情.事」 計劃,透過大師班、走訪校園、專題音樂會及導賞活動等,為世界知名藝術家及香港年青樂手提供

合作演出平台,從而栽培香港年青音樂家,並為公眾提供別具意義和更深入的音樂體驗。除了讓 古蹟化身古典音樂會場地,誼樂社亦會邀請作曲家及不同範疇的藝術家為古蹟創作新作品,務求 讓觀眾透過音樂及相關活動,對古蹟的歷史及故事有多重認識及體會。

With support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Musicus embarked on an exciting new chapter in 2019 with Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Alive program. This program won the Star of Outstanding Award at the 2022 Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases, organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research-Asia and Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO.

In 2022, with renewed funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories was launched. Year-long heritage activities include master classes, school visits, tailored-made performances, and heritage guided tours. In addition to serving as a platform for international artists to nurture local musicians and young talents, the program also creates an enriched and meaningful concert experience for the public at large. The new series also invites artists from other art forms to create new works, bringing in new perspectives on historical sites.

歐陸美好年代室樂:普契尼、拉威爾及法朗克

在《樂意盎然》音樂會系列中,邀得兩位蒙地卡羅音樂大賽冠軍得主,法國小提琴家克拉瑪基朗 和香港鋼琴家沈靖韜加入,並聯同誼樂社藝術總監兼大提琴家李垂誼與兩位年青樂手李溢和余靜 姍同台演出。中環除了是金融中心,雲咸街、荷李活道和擺花街一帶曾經也遍地芬芳。音樂會選 址藝穗會,透過音樂發掘商業區周圍繁花似錦、綠意盎然的前世今生。

藝穗會的前身是舊牛奶公司倉庫,歷史可追溯至1892 年,恰巧連接十九世紀末至1914 年一戰前夕 的「美好年代」。西方社會的太平盛世,引發文化和藝術創作風潮。節目選曲聚焦屬於該時代的 普契尼、拉威爾及法朗克,在地下劇場近距離演出,帶來一場法式沙龍氛圍的音樂會。

音樂會以外,希望大家觀賞同場設置的展覽,發掘藝穗會一帶城市後花園的故事。同時亦邀請了 資深花藝師李寶琪為音樂會場地佈置創作,讓觀眾耳聽音樂之餘,以跨界藝術塑造多感官體驗, 與觀眾重訪「美好年代」。

A wonderfully florid program of Belle Époque chamber music by Puccini, Ravel and Franck

In the Fragrance Notes concerts, French violinist Fanny Clamagirand and Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham, both winners of the Monte Carlo Music Masters, join Musicus Society Artistic Director Trey Lee and young talents, Lee Yat and Helen Yu. Taking place in the Fringe Club, the program revisits the lesser-known history of flowers and greenery in the Central district, harking back to the Belle Époque, a peaceful period from the late 19th century to the early 1910s in which arts and culture flourished in France and Europe.

The Fringe Club is housed in the Old Dairy Farm Depot building, which dates to 1892, and serves as a fitting venue for music from the same period. The program features compositions of shimmering beauty in an intimate salon-like setting: Puccini's Crisantemi string quartet, composed in 1890 upon the death of his friend, the Duke of Savoy; Ravel's impressionistic Piano Trio in A minor, composed on the eve of the First World War; and César Franck's ultraexpressive Piano Quintet in F minor.

We hope you will enjoy the concerts, as well as our mini exhibition about the stories of these historical links of floral fragrance. Musicus has also invited veteran local floral artist Peggy Li to decorate the venue with original flower arrangements, enhancing the performance space by cultivating nature's gifts in her unique and minimalist style.

我從事花藝行業超過二十年,這是我首次在古蹟建築內展覽作品兼為古典音樂會創作,實在是難能 可貴。

在設計的過程當中,我了解到藝穗會一帶的歷史,得知一個名為格林堤園的私人花園,原來曾經 只是一街之隔。參考了格林堤園栽種過的花卉,我創作了三件獨一無二的花藝作品,期望能伴隨 音樂會中的節奏與情感,互相產生共鳴。

Having worked in this industry for over 20 years, this is the first time my artwork has been showcased in a heritage building. Designing for a classical music concert has been a truly sensational endeavor.

During the design process, I immersed myself in the history of the surrounding neighborhood and discovered that Green Bank, a private park in the 19th century, was just around the corner. By revisiting historical records of the flowers once associated with Green Bank, I created three unique floral pieces that resonate both rhythmically and emotionally with the music. I hope these works offer the audience a new perspective, enhancing their appreciation of the performance through a multisensory experience.

Franck's intense Piano Quintet in F minor is echoed in a rugged, modular floral arrangement full of visual power and emotional depth. Ravel's Piano Trio, with its intricate and vibrant themes, inspired a piece that combines linear beauty with the pastoral elements of floral motifs. The harmonious coexistence of flowers and lines forms an arts space full of vitality and energy, allowing the audience to enjoy the serene romanticism of nature.

法朗克的F小調鋼琴五重奏情感濃烈, 我以富硬朗氣度的連合式結構設計, 表達其視覺震撼和情緒起伏。作品以 古典浪漫的深紅色大花環造型呈現, 花環本身通過錯綜複雜的結構交錯 而成,對比鮮明,張力十足,猶如一件 精雕細琢的立體雕塑作品。

Puccini's elegiac Crisantemi String Quartet prompts contemplation on human relationships. By carefully composing and assembling fragmented leaf units, I have transformed them into a large-scale chrysanthemum installation, symbolizing the mutual influence and interdependence among people. This artwork seamlessly integrates the material and spiritual, the individual and the whole, sparking profound reflection within the audience.

Hailed as a “miracle” by Gramophone, Trey Lee enthralls audiences with a virtuosity that combines intellectual sophistication with a profound depth of emotions. His concerto debut at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/ Perelman Stage won him a standing ovation, with New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini declaring him “the excellent cellist…with enveloping richness and lyrical sensitivity”. The late Lorin Maazel praised him as “a marvelous protagonist…a superb cellist” after conducting Trey with the Philharmonia Orchestra. His latest album, Seasons Interrupted, recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra for Signum Records, met with critical acclaim with BBC Music Magazine describing his performance “an exquisite delivery of the melody” with “an intoxicating intimacy”

Trey's most recent performances include appearances with Camerata Salzburg on tour and with the English Chamber Orchestra, and solo engagements in Vienna, London, Paris, Milan, Budapest, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Trey has worked with notable musicians and groups that include conductors Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yuri Bashmet, Mikko Franck, Hannu Lintu, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Vassily Sinaisky, Dima Slobodeniouk, BBC Philharmonic, Philharmonic Orchestra Radio France, Netherlands Philharmonic, Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Moscow Soloists, and chamber orchestras of London, Munich and Stuttgart.

Seeking to increase the expressive possibilities of the cello, Trey has re-arranged works including Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, which he debuted with the Trondheim Soloists. Wang Liping’s The Dream of the Red Chamber Capriccio, co-arranged by Trey, was premiered by Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Trey has given world premieres of two pieces dedicated to him: Bright Sheng’s The Blazing Mirage (recorded for Naxos) and contemporary Finnish composer Kirmo Lintinen’s Cello Concerto.

Trey is a laureate of major international competitions, including First Prize at the International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition. Numerous media outlets have featured Trey, including a recital recorded for Deutsche Welle during the Covid lockdown. As an ambassador of UNICEF Hong Kong, he shared the stage with Yoko Ono and Hugh Jackman at the UN General Assembly Hall to promote children’s rights in launching The IMAGINE Project.

For many years, Fanny Clamagirand has distinguished herself on the international stage as one of the revelations of the French violin scene. Born in Paris, she began playing the violin at the age of 7 and joined directly at 16 the Postgraduate course under JeanJacques Kantorow at the Paris Conservatoire. Winner of the 2007 Monte-Carlo Violin Masters and First Prize at the 2005 F. Kreisler International Competition, Clamagirand also studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Itzhak Rashkovsky and in Vienna with Pavel Vernikov. Acclaimed for the elegance of her playing and her interpretations that blend sensitivity, authority and freedom, she performs as a soloist in the world’s greatest concert halls and festivals with renowned orchestras and artists. She is also a regular guest on various French and foreign medias. She was also a member of Mutter’s Virtuosi, an ensemble of young soloists led by Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Her extensive discography has been widely acclaimed and rewarded by the specialist press. It includes the Six Sonates d’Ysaÿe (Nascor), the three violin concertos by Saint-Saëns (Naxos), a three-volume cycle of works for violin and piano by Saint-Saëns (Naxos), Missing by Edith Canat de Chizy (world premiere, Solstice) with the Orchestre National de France conducted by John Storgårds and Beethoven’s Concerto set against Peteris Vasks’ Distant Light (Mirare), both with the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Ken-David Masur. Her most recent album to be released under Naxos is dedicated to the two violin concertos by Florence Price, recorded with the Malmö Opera Orchestra and John Jeter.

Clamagirand is often invited to judge international competitions and host masterclasses. She was awarded the Prix des Arts by the Académie d’Occitanie in 2019 and is the Artistic Director of the Classiques de la Villa Charlotte, a new international musical event premiered in Les Sables d’Olonne in 2023. Also in the 2023 season, she was one of the Jubilee Ambassadors of the Bärenreiter music publishing house for their centenary celebrations.

沈靖韜獲《紐約時報》盛讚「演奏清晰分明、優雅流麗、 技藝超凡」,《華盛頓郵報》更於他年少時形容他「潛力 無限」,並已能「自如發揮最佳水準」,他的演奏足跡 遍及五大洲,令無數觀眾留下深刻印象。2009 年,他 亮相於英國第四台的紀錄片《世界最偉大的音樂神童》。

Hailed by The New York Times as a pianist “whose playing combines clarity, elegance and abundant technique” and by The Washington Post as a young artist with “boundless potential” who can “already hold his own with the best,” Aristo Sham has dazzled audiences on five continents. In 2009, he was featured in the documentary The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies, broadcast by Channel 4 in the UK.

Sham has also performed for royalty and dignitaries such as King Charles, the Queen of Belgium, and exPresident Hu Jintao of China, and collaborated with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Edo de Waart, English Chamber Orchestra under the late Sir Raymond Leppard, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Minnesota Orchestra.

Sham first gained international recognition when he won First Prize in the Ettlingen International Piano Competition in Germany in 2006 and First Prize in the Gina Bachauer International Junior Piano Competition in 2008. He is the First Prize Winner of the 2018 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and more recently, the recipient of top prizes at the Casagrande, Gina Bachauer, Vendome Prize at Verbier Festival, Dublin, Clara Haskil, New York, SaintPriest and Viotti International Piano Competitions. In 2023, he won the Grand Prix at the Monte-Carlo Music Masters.

Sham holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University and a Master’s in Piano Performance from New England Conservatory. He is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at the Juilliard School under Robert McDonald and Orli Shaham. His principal teachers include Eleanor Wong, Colin Stone, Victor Rosenbaum and Julia Mustonen-Dahlkvist. He has also been mentored by Gabriela Montero. In his free time, Sham enjoys travelling, languages, gastronomy and oenology.

香港中提琴手李溢是「樂.誼獨奏家樂團」成員及 2021 年誼樂社「年青音樂家招募」優異獎得主之一。 他曾到歐洲、美國、亞洲和中東各大音樂廳演出,如 維多利亞音樂廳、維也納金色大廳、維也納音樂廳、 柏林音樂廳、皇家阿爾拔音樂廳、蒙地卡羅歌劇院和 琉森文化和會議中心。李氏曾入圍阿洛諾維茨及內德 巴爾國際中提琴大賽準決賽,並於 2018 年榮獲維也納 克萊斯納學院大賽亞軍。

熱衷室樂的他曾與多位著名音樂家同台演出,如雲基 洛夫、今井宣子、潘拿奴、卡普頌和利西等。他曾獲邀 參與多個音樂節,例如維也納現代音樂節、普魯士灣 音樂節、史特奧法音樂節、卡薩爾斯音樂節、格斯塔德 曼奴軒音樂節、米捷夫音樂節、貝爾里夫音樂節、庫赫莫 室樂節、Music@Menlo 及比爾斯飛躍演奏音樂節, 並曾亮相於各大國際電視頻道,如瑞士電視台 Leman Bleu、奧地利廣播集團電視及香港電台電視。

作為一位管弦樂手,他曾任曼奴軒獨奏家樂團、伯爾尼 聲音節樂團及魏本交響樂團的首席中提琴,亦曾以客席 樂手身份與香港管弦樂團演奏。他亦曾經與不少著名 指揮合作,如杜南意、基里爾 佩特連科和夏丁等。

李氏以全額獎學金入讀維也納音樂及演藝大學和國際 曼奴軒音樂學院,師承胡克切域、雲基洛夫、塔卡克斯納吉、卡羅斯及舒奈奧爾。李氏現以全額獎學金入讀曼 克頓音樂學院,師承蘇嘉文及高柏克。他亦是楊納札克 博士基金會及北山堂基金的獎學金得主。

李氏演奏用的貝特斯名琴(約 1800 年製)由「附筆 藏品」經比爾斯國際小提琴協會借出。

Hong Kong violist Lee Yat received an Honorable Mention at the 2021 Musicus Young Artist Audition and is a member of Musicus Soloists Hong Kong. He has been performing extensively across Europe, the US, Asia and the Middle East in prestigious concert halls such as the Victoria Hall, Musikverein Wien, Wiener Konzerthaus, Berlin Konzerthaus, Royal Albert Hall, Opera de Monte Carlo and KKL Luzern. Lee was a semi-finalist at the Cecil Aronowitz and Oskar Nedbal international viola competitions. In 2018, he received 2nd Prize at the Kreisler Institute Competition, Vienna. As an avid chamber musician, he has performed with eminent musicians such as Maxim Vengerov, Nobuko Imai, Liviu Prunaru, Renaud Capuçon, Antonio Lysy, among others. He has been invited to festivals such as Wien Modern, Prussia Cove, Stauffer, Pablo Casals, Gstaad Menuhin, Megeve, Bellerive, Kuhmo, Music@Menlo and Beare’s Premiere Music Festival. He has appeared on worldwide television networks, including Leman Bleu, ORF, and RTHK.

As an orchestral musician, he has appeared as principal violist with Menuhin Soloists, Klangforum Bern, the Webern Symphony Orchestra, and as guest player with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He has performed under the baton of renowned conductors such as Christoph von Dohnányi, Kirill Petrenko and Daniel Harding.

Lee studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and the International Menuhin Music Academy with full scholarship, under the tutelage of Ivan Vukčević, Maxim Vengerov, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Wolfgang Klos, and Ulrich Schönauer. Lee is currently a student at the Manhattan School of Music, studying under Pinchas Zukerman and Patinka Kopec with full scholarship. He was also a scholarship recipient of the Dr. Martha Sobotka-Charlotte Janeczek Foundation and the Bei Shan Tang Foundation.

Lee plays a fine c.1800 John Betts viola kindly loaned to him by the PostScript Collection through the Beare’s International Violin Society.

余靜姍是 2024 年誼樂社「年青音樂家招募」決賽 入圍者。余氏在香港出生及成長,剛於 2024 年在波士頓 新英格蘭音樂學院完成其碩士學位,並將繼續修讀藝術 家文憑課程,師承威勒斯坦。自小在香港演藝學院的 青少年音樂課程受訓,於該校學士畢業,師承馬忠為。

余氏曾是新英格蘭音樂學院愛樂樂團和室樂團的樂團 首席,其鋼琴三重奏亦在該校贏得榮譽室樂大獎。在 香港演藝學院就讀期間,曾擔任演藝交響樂團的樂團 首席,並憑西貝流士和布拉姆斯小提琴協奏曲兩度贏 得協奏曲比賽。她亦是東京國際青年音樂比賽高級組 冠軍。她曾獲邀參與聖保羅室樂團副首席和費城樂團及 芝加哥交響樂團的小提琴席位的試音遴選。

余氏曾獲多個全額獎學金,如新英格蘭音樂學院院長獎 學金、香港賽馬會音樂及舞蹈信託基金和香港賽馬會獎 學金。她亦積極參與各大音樂節,其中包括帕爾曼音樂 計劃室樂工作坊、海菲茲國際音樂學院的室樂研討會、 阿斯本音樂節和柯蒂斯夏季音樂節(擔任樂團首席)。最

近,她作為 Cong 四重奏成員之一,以新晉藝術家身份 參與米邁爾室樂節的演出。

Helen Yu was the finalist at the 2024 Musicus Young Artist Audition. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Helen Yu is currently a student of Donald Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) in Boston. She recently completed her master’s degree in 2024 and will commence her graduate diploma studies at NEC. Prior to NEC, she graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) with a Bachelor of Music degree, studying under the tutelage of Michael Ma, with whom she had been studying since she was a junior student at HKAPA.

Yu has held the position of Concertmaster for both the NEC Philharmonia and the NEC Chamber Orchestra. She also won the NEC Honors Chamber Competition with her piano trio. During her time at HKAPA, Helen was the Concertmaster of the Academy Symphony Orchestra and won the Academy Concerto Competition twice, performing Sibelius and Brahms Violin Concertos with the orchestra. She was also the champion of the Tokyo International Youth Music Competition (Virtuoso Senior Class). She has been invited to auditions for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra Associate Concertmaster position and section violin positions of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Yu is a recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship from NEC, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship, all of which fully support her music studies. She is also an active participant in prestigious music festivals, including the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, the Heifetz International Institute of Music’s chamber music seminar program, the Aspen Summer Music Festival and Curtis Summerfest (as Concertmaster). As a member of Cong Quartet, she recently appeared at the Mimir Chamber Music Festival as an Emerging Artist Fellow.

Yu plays on a violin by Testore, loaned by the Colburn Collection during her time in Boston.

李寶琪任教花藝設計超過二十年,她對花卉充滿熱情, 享受與花卉相處的每一分鐘,這種天賦更啟發她將其 變成一生的事業。李氏喜歡簡單純粹的花藝設計,而 不是一般傳統花藝設計中看到的繁瑣多彩的佈置,並由 此欣賞具生命力的藝術,去發現裝飾的美,以及建立 個人風格。作為花藝導師,李氏的教學同樣重視花藝 技巧和設計思維。

於 2010 年創立花言學府,並成為首間榮獲最新 ISO 9001 : 2015 認證花藝學校。除了教學,她亦會參與 花藝展覽及交流活動,與義工團體推行義務工作,回饋 社會。

Peggy Li has been teaching floral art for more than 20 years. She sees her enthusiasm for flower art as a natural gift and has spun it into a lifelong career. She enjoys every moment designing floral pieces, and her minimalist style is based on appreciating art that expresses vitality and discovering the beauty of decorative art. As a teacher, Peggy passes on the skills and mentality of design to her students.

In 2010, Peggy established Life Flower School, making it the first floral school to receive the latest ISO 9001:2015 certification. Besides teaching, she also takes part in related events and exhibitions to promote floral arts, and has been engaged in community service.

Musicus Society was founded in 2010 by a group of music lovers as the vision of cellist Trey Lee to become an international music organization with quality performances and world-class home-grown artists. It is a Hong Kong registered charity with the Hon. Tung Chee-hwa as Honorary Patron.

The Society’s mission is to promote cross-cultural collaboration of music internationally between top local and overseas artists through performances and by nurturing the next generation of talent. Each year, the Society presents four major programs:

Musicus Fest An international partnership for world-class artists to collaborate, showcasing our exceptional artists and working with our young talents to bring their artistry to new heights.

Musicus Heritage In addition to the objectives of Musicus Fest, Musicus Heritage enhances the public’s knowledge of our culture and history by presenting music programs that reflect their heritage settings.

Musicus Inspires! is an educational program that aims to cultivate young talents from all social backgrounds. The initiative provides training and performance opportunities for emerging artists with great musicians, such as the “Call for Scores” for young composers, the “Young Artist Audition” and the “Ensemble Training” for instrumentalists. It also organizes “School Visits” for students to explore various aspects of music.

Musicus Soloists Hong Kong Directed and initiated by renowned cellist Trey Lee, Musicus Soloists Hong Kong (MSHK) comprises some of Hong Kong’s top next-generation artists who gather from all over the world. MSHK is focused on becoming a leading chamber ensemble representing Hong Kong throughout the world.

關於古蹟 ABOUT THE HERITAGE

SITE

成立40多年以來,藝穗會逐步成為了一個充滿活力的當代藝術空間,為香港或海外藝術家提供展覽及表演 場地,同時也為藝術愛好者提供一處共聚和欣賞節目的地方。

自1983年起藝穗會便為香港提供這個公開藝壇;作品無須經過特別甄選,因為藝穗會相信無論是藝術或其 他工作,每人都有自主權來決定內容。

多年來,藝穗會一直採取開放政策,藝術家能夠自由創作,觀眾亦能全程投入藝術世界,這種藝術文化交流 與生活不可分割。美酒佳餚亦是藝穗會的悉心點綴,好讓文化氣息在輕鬆高雅的環境之下孕育和沉澱。

2001年,藝穗會獲香港特區政府頒發文物古跡保護獎,其主體於2009年宣佈為一級歷史建築。2018年, 獲HKICON頒發保育獎項。經過改造與活化,這座具有新古典風格的建築如今儼然成為香港迸發無限生機的 藝術文化地標。

For over 40 years since established, the Fringe Club has become a vibrant contemporary arts space where artists create and show their work, and those who enjoy the arts come to meet and see shows. Facilities for exhibitions and performances here are offered to both emerging and professional artists in Hong Kong and from overseas.

The Fringe Club has been providing an open platform for the arts in Hong Kong since 1983. Performers and artists can show their work without having to go through selection process.

Over the years, by pursuing this policy of open access, the Fringe Club has come to be identified with freedom of expression. This freedom is invariably associated with the pleasure of creating, showing and enjoying the arts, which we think should be done without isolating them from everyday life. Food and drinks are also served here to facilitate this communication.

In 2001, the Fringe Club won the HKSAR Government's first-ever Hong Kong Heritage Award, and its premises was declared Grade-1 heritage in 2009. In 2018, Fringe Club received the HKICON Conservation Award. By creatively transforming this old 1890s colonial building and giving it an entirely new existence and identity, this landmark building has become identified with the energetic and rapid development in arts and culture in Hong Kong.
