PACIFIC JAZZ ENSEMBLE FEATURING JAZZ STUDIES FACULTY

A big band in the tradition of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, the Pacific Jazz Ensemble performs classic big band literature while also embracing the music of cotemporary composers & arrangers. They have an impressive list of credentials which include having competition winning performances at the Reno Jazz Festival and being invited several times to play at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, CA. Recent guest artists performing with the group have included Gretchen Parlato, Lewis Nash, Terrell Stafford, Carl Allen, Eric Reed, Samara Joy, and Sullivan Fortner.

Trombonist Jamie Dubberly currently teaches Advanced Improvisation and Intro to Jazz at the University of the Pacific. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Georgia, and a Master’s degree in music from The Hartt School of Music (University of Hartford), where he also participated in a doctoral program, and was on the faculty as an adjunct, part-time instructor.

Vocalist Melissa Fulkerson was raised in Sonoma County, California, where she was exposed to the world of music performance at an early age.

With her father being an accomplished guitar and bass player in multiple groups across the Bay Area, Melissa grew up surrounded by performing musicians. She has a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies and Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance.

JAZZ STUDIES FACULTY BIOS

Originally from Texas and now residing in Stockton, drummer Brian Kendrick holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Percussion Performance from Texas Tech University as well as a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University.

Patrick Langham is an experienced educator and performer with an 18-year career at the University of the Pacific. As Professor and Director of Jazz Studies, Langham developed the university’s Jazz Studies degree programs. During his time at Pacific, Langham has traveled to Spain as a visiting jazz conductor, overseen student performances in Paraguay, and directed groups at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Reno Jazz Festival, and Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

As a saxophonist, he has performed with distinguished jazz artists including Lewis Nash, Bob Hurst, Donald Brown, Tom Harrell, Essiet Essiet, Terell Stafford, and Louis Hayes.

Trumpeter, educator, and composer Joe Mazzaferro serves as Associate Director of Jazz Studies at Pacific. He has earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from University of the Pacific and a Master of Music in Jazz and Studio Music from the University of Tennessee.

JAZZ STUDIES FACULTY BIOS

Bassist Gerry Pineda joined the Conservatory of Music as an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies in the fall of 2012. He has also been serving as an adjunct professor at California State University Sacramento since 2005. Professor Pineda holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies and Master of Music in Double Bass Performance from California State University Sacramento.

Born in Stockton California, saxophonist Alexander Reyes completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies at University of the Pacific where he studied saxophone under Patrick Langham. He earned his Master’s Degree at University of Tennessee, studying saxophone with Gregory Tardy and piano with Donald Brown.
