Beginning with the our magazine being published every two months, the development of our weekly newsletter, the restructuring of mushroom-online.com, holidays, illness in our team, rating the Producer Contest, and preparing the new Remix Contest, featuring a track by the cult band New Model Army....

All this has resulted in the magazine getting published late this month, later than for a long time. However, thanks to our new service, which makes every mushroom magazine available to our subscribers as a personalized PDF download link, this delay has been reduced to a few days. As one of the most famous independent bands in Europe, New Model Army should really be well known to every person over 30. The electronic scene had a chance to get to know the band at the latest at the Fusion 2005, where they performed live.

Als eine der bekanntesten Independent Bands Europas sollte New Model Army eigentlich jedem über 30 ein fester Begriff sein. Spätestens bei ihrem Konzert auf dem Fusion Festival 2005 hatte auch die Electronic Szene die Möglichkeit sich ein Bild zu machen.

Die meisten von Euch wissen ja noch, von unserem Anne Clark contest, wie es geht. Die Originaldateien kannst Du bei uns runter laden und Dich daran nach Herzenslust austoben. Du hast, was den Style angeht, keine Vorgaben, ob Du also einen Fullon oder einen Chillout -Track komponierst, bleibt Dir überlassen. Der Grundbeat des Stückes ist 125,5 aber wie gesagt, was am Ende dabei herauskommt ist zu 100% Deine Entscheidung

Most of you already know what to do from our Anne Clark remix. You can download the original files from our website and edit them however you like. As far as style is concerned there are no guidelines, so if you would like to compose a chill out or full on track is fully up to you. The original tempo of the track is 125.5 BPM, but again, what comes out at the end is 100% your decision.

New Model Army »High« (Attack Attack Records) CD Am 31. August erschien das nunmehr zehnte New Model Army Album. Es ist ein sehr melodisches und gitarrenlastiges Album geworden. Egal, ob für den Fan der ersten Stunde oder den Freund gepflegter Gitarrenmusik ist das Album ein Knaller. Mit dem Song „Wired“ gibt es einen schnellen Einstieg, klingt wie eh und je und zugleich modern und frisch. Neben schnelleren Stücken wie „Wired“ oder „Nothing Comes Easy“ oder das beinahe schräge „Bloodsports“, finden sich auf „High“ natürlich typisch perkussive wie auch ruhigere, melancholische Stücke wie „Rivers“, die allerdings weit davon entfernt sind, Balladen zu sein. Zu einer neuen CD gehört natürlich eine fette Tour; die Termine dazu findet Ihr auf unserer Webseite.

On the 31st of August the tenth New Model Army album was released.

It turns out to be a very guitar driven and melodic album. Wether you are a fan from the beginning, or have a liking for cultured guitar music, the album is highly recommended in both cases. The song “Wired” is a high tempo opener, and sounds as we have come to know New Model Army, however, also sounds fresh and modern.

Besides the faster tracks such as “Wired” or “Nothing Comes Easy”, or the almost bizarre “Bloodsports”, on “High” one can, of course, also find trade mark percussive, as well as more calm, melancholic tracks such as “Rivers”, which are still far from being ballads. In Euren Liedern analysiert ihr die Gesellschaft, kritisiert sie auch, aber eigentlich ist es eine Art zu beschreiben, was gerade passiert.

Spielt für Dich die Musik eine aktive Rolle in der Gesellschaft? „All-Consuming Fire“, das Lied, das wir euren Lesern für den Mix gegeben haben, benutzt eine Menge unterschiedlicher Bilder. Ich meine, offensichtlich handelt es vom Ende der Welt (Gelächter).

Also geht es um die westliche Zivilisation, die auf Abwege gerät?

Ja, es ist ein Hasslied. Manchmal schreiben wir sowas.

Das wird eine echte Herausforderung für die Leute, ihn in TranceMusik umzusetzen.

Aber musikalisch ist er einfach, die Teile sind repititiv. Von der Musik her ist er relativ leicht zu remixen. Ich freue mich echt darauf, das zu hören, zu sehen, wie er zurückkommt!

Does music play an active role in society? »All-Consuming Fire«, the song for the remix, is about the end of the world.

So, it‘s all about the Western civilization going astray?

Yeah, it‘s a hate song. Sometimes we write those.

It‘s really a challenge for the people to remix it into Trance music.

But musically it‘s kind of simple, the parts are kind of repetitive. Musicwise it‘s fairly easy to remix. I‘m really looking forward to hearing it, to see how it comes back!

smx´ »Summer morning« s m x ´ sind Christoph von Seeler und Björn Buse aus Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein. Die beiden kennen sich schon seit der Schule. Musikalisch angefangen hat es bei beiden mit ca.

16 Jahren, wo sie die ersten experimentellen Versuche mit Beats und elektronischen Sounds unternahmen. Damals noch in unterschiedlichen Projekten, Christoph mit „boya“ und Björn mit „SWO“. Die ersten gemeinsamen Tracks kamen ca.1999 zustande. Die Liste ihrer derzeitigen Kooperationen sprengt hier leider den Rahmen und ist deshalb nur im Internet, wo ihr auch weitere Soundproben findet. Eine Bedeutung hat Trance insofern für sie, als dass sie immer versuchen, die Zuhörer „mitzunehmen“, was für sie im weitesten Sinne die Vorstufe zur Trance darstellt. Musically speaking they started at the age of 16, when they began experimenting with beats and electronic sounds. Back then, they were both active in different projects, Christoph in “Boya” and Björn with “SWO”. Their first joint tracks date from around 1999. The list of further co-operations is considerable and would need too much space here, so you can find it online as well as further tracks of theirs to listen. For them the meaning of trance is that they always try to take their listeners on a journey of some kind, which they feel is generally speaking the starting point of trance.

Lucy »Flash Damage« Die Idee von Lucy entstand spontan im Frühling dieses Jahres. Christian Merki aus Zürich und Dominik Heimburger vom Bodensee möchten mit dem Projekt Lucy einen einzigartigen Stil entwickeln, indem progressive Aufbauformen mit psychedlischen Skillz und Rhythmik vereinigt werden. Als Lucy haben die beiden bereits zwei Releases auf Frakasound und YSE. Christian ist seit 2003 auch „Midimal“ und damit seit 2006 bei Frakasound Records unter Vertrag. Kajola »Atomic« Heinz Leuc aus Wien ist Kajola.

Er ist 31 Jahre alt und seit 2002 aktiv als Producer und DJ in der österreichischen Szene. Heinz ist bei Synergetic Records aus Wien für die Bookings zuständig und hat schon drei seiner Tracks auf verschiedenen Samplern veröffentlicht. Im Moment arbeit er daran seinem Debütalbum den letzten Schliff zu verpassen und seine Vorlieben würde er am ehesten als Psytrance / Fullon beschreiben. Seine Trance-Initiation erfuhr er auf einem Earthdance in Wien und nach dem Flea Market in der Shore Bar in Arjuna.

Dura »Touch My Mind« Dura kommt aus Hamburg und ist schon seit Mitte der 90er im Psytrance unterwegs. Er ist Gründungsmitglied der Party-Crew »Freunde der Sonne«, hat bisher leider noch nichts veröffentlicht, im Internet gibt es schon ein paar Hörproben. Musikalisch mag er sich nicht so richtig festlegen, aber seine bisherige Musik ist positiv und geht voll nach vorne. Obwohl er dem Trance sehr verbunden ist und dieser auch sein Hauptmotor ist, hört er immer noch gerne viel andere Musik. Dura is from Hamburg, and has been in psy trance since the mid 90’s. He is a founding member of the party crew »Freunde der Sonne«, (Friends of the Sun), and so far, unfortunately, has had no tracks released, but you can find a few tracks online. Musically speaking he does not want to be restricted to a particular style, but so far his music is positive, and has plenty of drive.

Even though he is very connected to trance, and it his driving force, he also likes to listen to a lot of other music styles. He guesses, he spent about one week working on his entry for our contest.

Skandinavien in Trance

Beowulf of Scandza Beowulf ist ein fiktive Heldengeschichte und spielt im historisches Umfeld im Dänemark und Schweden des 5. und 6. Jahrhunderts. Scandza ist der alte Name Skandinaviens, er taucht in der Antike in variierenden Formen auf, bis sich im Mittelalter schließlich die heutige Form »Skandinavien« durchsetzte. Geografisch ist Skandinavien die Halbinsel, auf der sich Norwegen und Schweden befinden. In etymologischer und kultureller Hinsicht umfasst es zudem Dänemark. Häufig wird im weiteren Sinne auch Finnland durch seine geografische, historische und politische Verwandtschaft zu Skandinavien gezählt. Bekannt für die skandinavischen Länder sind die an den Dannebrog angelehnten Kreuzflaggen, die jeder heutige offizielle Staat Skandinaviens hat.

Beowulf ist der Beginn des kulturellen Schaffens der Nordgermanen, die mit Abba später den Eurovision Song Contest gewannen und auch heutzutage nicht nur im Psytrance ganz stark mitmischen. Ohne Musik aus Skandinavien würde unserer Szene gewaltig etwas fehlen. Musik aus Skandinavien ist sehr vielfältig, einzelne Schubladen reichen nicht aus. Auf den ersten Blick mag man Skandinavien für überwiegend progressiv halten, doch wenn man tiefer in die Materie eintaucht entdeckt man in allen Bereichen wahre Perlen. Chillout, Downbeat, Breaks auf der einen Seite und »Sick weird and Twisted« am anderen Ende der Skala. Natürlich reicht der Platz in unserem Magazin nicht aus um jeden hier zu erwähnen, aber ein paar sehr interessante Künstler und Labels haben wir Euch auf den nächsten Seiten zusammengetragen.

Scandza was the old name of histo Scandinavia, which surfaces in various forms in its history, until in the middle ages the current name Scandinavia became generally accepted. Geographically speaking, it is the peninsula in which Norway and Sweden lie. In ethno mythological and cultural terms it also includes Denmark.

Furthermore Finland is also often included in Scandinavia due to its geographical, historical and political affiliation.

The cross emblem flags are based on the Dannenberg flag, and are a returning emblem of every official Scandinavian state today.

Der britische Produzent Gaudi hat einen langen Sommer hinter sich, während dem er sein Talent für treibenden Reggae-Dub-Tronica auf Festivals wie der Sonica zur Schau stellte. Diese Momente im Rampenlicht hat er sich allerdings wohlverdient, immerhin nennt er 80 Remixe und zwölf Soloalben seit 1990 sein Eigen.

Auf der Sonica zog Gaudi alle Register und lieferte ein fantastisches Set ab, in dem ab und an Klassiker wie The Doors ‘Roadhouse Blues’ auf ganz eigene Art und Weise hineingemixt wurden. Aber perfekt auf den sonnigen Festivalnachmittag zugeschnitten – eben mit seinem speziellen Live-Dub. “Ach, das ist alles improvisiert”, sagt er, “das Einzige, was ich vorher mache ist, mir einige Tracks als Stütze zu notieren, denn mein Gedächtnis ist echt im Eimer”.

Visual artists, designers and VJs of the Frolic Productions team created an eclectic mix of graphical styles, forms and textures.

The visuals are mostly minimalistic in a ‘live-VJ club style’ and reacting very rhythmically to the beat generating a more stimulating rather than psychedelic effect.

Psychedelic CD and DVD from Austria

Zum progressiven Sound der CD hat Grenzmedial eine DVD mit Videos und Visuals kreiert. Mir fiel zuerst auf, dass die Optik immer gut zum Beat läuft. Die Tanzszenen zu „Atemnote” aus alten schwarzweiß Filmen sind genial zusammengeschnitten und wirklich lustig.

Viel Mühe wurde für die verfilmten Phantasiewelten mit Neandertalern, Feen und dem Wurm aus „Alice im Wunderland” verwendet. Die psychedelische Abteilung kann am meisten überzeugen. Das Video zum Schluss besteht ausschliesslich aus „Wasser” und reinigt nochmal sehr angenehm das Hirn.

In addition to their progressive CD Grenzmedial has created a DVD with videos and visuals. I noticed that the visuals are always nicely on the beat. Dance-scenes for „Atemnote”, taken from old black and white movies are put together in a really funny way. Much effort was put into a fantasy world with Neanderthals, fairies and the worm from „Alice in Wonderland”. The psychedelic/experimental visuals above all make for the psy-flow. The last video is made out of water only and is cleansing the brain in a very pleasant way.

Somnambul 10. November, Hamburg / Germany Die Party mit der CD ist wieder da. Die Teams von Hörspiel, Somnambul und Glamour Studios bereiten gerade ihre Herbstveranstaltung vor und wie immer gibt es für die ersten 300 Gäste eine exklusive CD mit unveröffentlichtem Sound. Diesmal wieder eine Compilation mit Neelix, Shiva Chandra, NOK, FM und anderen. Letztes Jahr führte die Ankündigung zu einem derartigen Run auf die Party, dass die Location am Hühnerposten aus allen Nähten platzte. Anders als damals wird diesmal auch das Foyer mitgenutzt, damit diesmal keiner vor der Tür warten muss. Mit viel Bedacht wurde auch in diesem Jahr wieder ein überwiegend progressives Programm zusammengestellt, in dem es zur richtigen Zeit aber natürlich auch die psychedelischen Spitzen gibt. Die Deko gestaltet neben den Lokalmatadoren der Schwede Fredrik NOS, dessen Bilder wir in Hamburg schon lange nicht mehr gesehen haben. Der Hühnerposten ist durch seine Lage nur fünf Gehminuten vom Hauptbahnhof entfernt wohl zusätzlich auch eine der verkehrsgünstigsten Locations in Hamburg. Thailand Wer den Jahreswechsel gern in Thailand verbringt und sich schon auf das GreenSpirit Festival gefreut hat, den müssen wir leider enttäuschen. Probleme mit den lokalen Behörden zwangen den Veranstalter seine Party abzusagen.

Australia Auch das Team vom Akasha Festival teilte uns mit, dass der kommende Sommer in Australien ohne sie stattfindet. Das Team hat sich entschieden einen Break zu machen und Kräfte zu sammeln für die kommenden Jahre.

Am letzten Wochenende im Februar 2009 wollen sie aber wieder zurück sein.

Silvester bei Sommer, Sonne und Sonnenschein, was könnte schöner sein. Zum achten Mal schon findet in Brasilien die Universo Paralello statt. Zum fünften Mal in Folge schon an diesem Strand. Die Einheimischen in Ituberá sehen dieses Festival schon als Teil ihres kulturellen Erbes an und arbeiten eng mit dem Team von Universo Paralello zusammen . Jedes Mal, wenn ich das Lineup dieser Party sehe, scheint es mir als würde die ganze Welt anreisen, um am paradiesischen Pratigi Strand in Bahia das Jahr zu verabschieden. Erwartet werden ungefähr 10.000 Gäste und geboten werden diesen drei Floors. Jede Menge Strand, Sand und Palmen bilden die Grundlage, das wohl reichhaltigste Lineup sorgt für die richtige Musik und ein ausgewogenes Programm an Workshops sorgt für genügend alternativen Zeitvertreib. Der Eintritt kostet, je nach Wechselkurs ungefähr 96,- Euro und ist damit bei einer Veranstaltung in dieser Größenordnung recht günstig.

The locals of Ituberá already consider this festival a part of their cultural tradition, and work together closely with the festival’s team. Every time I see the line up at this party, it seems to me, the whole world is flying in to see off the year at a paradise like Pratigi beach in Bahia. Around 10.000 guests are expected, and this year, three floors are on offer.

Plenty of beach, sand and palm trees are the foundation, the right music will be provided by one of the most extensive line ups to date, and there are plenty of work shops offering lots of alternative ways to pass the time. Und auf einmal ist es dunkel ...

Bewusstseinserforschung mal anders.

Einen interessanten Weg, sich mit seinem Bewußtsein auseinanderzusetzen, bietet der „Dialog im Dunkeln“, der bis März 2008 in der Hamburger Speicherstadt zu erleben ist. Das Konzept ist ganz einfach, der Effekt kaum in Worte zu fassen: In der interaktiven Ausstellung wird einem der Sehsinn für 60 Minuten genommen und man spürt am eigenen Leib, wie es sich anfühlt, blind zu sein.

In komplett abgedunkelten Räumen durchläuft man in Kleingruppen verschiedene Stationen, die einem aus dem alltäglichen Leben zur Genüge bekannt sind, doch hier mit einem völlig anderen Bewusstsein wahrgenommen werden. Die Angst, die einen zunächst beschleicht, ist nach den ersten vorsichtigen Tastschritten mit dem Blindenstock wie weggeblasen – so sehr fasziniert dieses unbekannte, neue Erlebnis.

Die Konzentration wird auf die anderen Sinne gelenkt, was besonders am Ende der Tour zum Nachdenken bringt. Hier nämlich ist die Dunkel-Bar, die nicht nur den Gaumen auf besondere Art und Weise kitzelt.

Nein, es besteht nun auch die Möglichkeit, sich mit den -natürlich – blinden Tourguides zu unterhalten.

Und auf einmal rasen hundert Gedanken auf einmal durch den Kopf: Mit wem unterhalte ich mich da? Wie alt ist mein Gesprächspartner in etwa? Wie mag er wohl ausschauen? Fände ich ihn sympathisch, wenn er bei Licht vor mir stehen würde?

Mitgenommen habe ich aus dem Gespräch nicht nur interessantes Wissen darüber, wie z.B. Blinde träumen, sondern in erster Linie die Erkenntnis, dass wir Sehenden uns üblicherweise doch mehr vom äußeren Auftreten einer Person blenden lassen, als wir es uns selbst eingestehen wollen. Somit macht dieses Erlebnis Dinge bewußt, über die man sonst gar nicht so intensiv nachdenken würde und Saint-Exupery`s Aussage

„Man sieht nur mit dem Herzen gut“ bekommt ein völlig neues Gewicht.

Die größte Überraschung zeigt sich allerdings erst, wenn die Tour vorbei ist und man wieder im Hellen steht. So grell sind die Farben, so bunt alles, so viel, das auf einmal wieder vor den Augen auftaucht – eine Viertelstunde ist schon nötig, um die Augen einigermaßen wieder an die Welt zu gewöhnen. Ein schönes, unvergessliches Erlebnis, das jedem nur ans Herz gelegt werden kann!

Researching consciousness. An unusual approach.

An absolutely interesting way to find out more about your consciousness is the Dialogue in the Dark, in Hamburg, Germany, until March 2008. The concept is simple, the effect indeed hard to put in words. In this interactive exhibition you see – absolutely nothing. Your sight is taken in order to give you a feeling of how it is to be blind.

I got many new impressions out of this exhibition, i.e. knowledge about how blind people dream, but more important to me was the insight that we actually judge people by their looks – to a much higher degree than we would really admit. So, this experience will not only activate new thoughts, but you will also read

In small groups you go through totally darkened rooms and experience various every-day situations. You know how it feels crossing a street? Think again! Your consciousness works totally different when you are blind.. Of course, this sounds scary for the first moment, but your fear will rapidly disappear after you have taken a few steps with the white cane – this new world is too fascinating and engrosses you immediately!

Your concentration is channelled to your other senses and especially the last part of the tour will definitely stir up some thoughts on your mind. There, in the Dark Bar you might want to eat or drink something, but more importantly, have the possibility to talk to your blind tour guide. Suddenly, hundreds of ideas rumble through your head: Who am I talking to? How old might he/she be? How does he look like? Would he engage my sympathy?

Saint Exupery`s quote „it‘s only with the heart that someone can see rightly“ with a new understanding in the future.

After all, the biggest surprise occurs after you get back to light. So lucid the colours, so bright everything around you! It feels like seeing the world with new eyes – and it takes about 15 minutes to get accustomed to light again. An unforgettable adventure which I would recommend to everyone!.

Neue Erkenntnisse Cannabiskonsum und Fahreignung Die Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (BAST) ist auf ihrer Internetpräsenz mit einer bemerkenswerten Veröffentlichung in Erscheinung getreten. Es wird auf Ergebnisse und Einschätzungen einer Studie zum Thema „Cannabis und Verkehrssicherheit“ hingewiesen, die im Auftrag der Behörde erstellt und im Jahre 2006 weitgehend unbemerkt veröffentlicht wurde. Im Ergebnis werden erhebliche Zweifel angemeldet, ob das bisherige Instrumentarium zur Beurteilung von Fahreignung geeignet und angemessen ist.

Insbesondere betroffen sind die bei spezialisierten Rechtsanwälten und liberalen Drogenpolitikern schon immer in der Kritik stehenden Einschätzungen des Establishments zur grundsätzlichen Relevanz von sogenanntem regelmäßigen Cannabiskonsum auf die Fahreignung und zum Trennungsvermögen bei

Cannabis consumption and capacity to drive The federal office for road matters (BAST) has published a remarkable

article on their web site. The article makes references to a study regarding “Cannabis and traffic safety” which was published in 2006, almost without anybody noticing. The results state that there are serious doubts whether today’s techniques for assessing driving capabilities are appropriate or not. The study especially sheds doubt on the relevancy of so called regular Cannabis consumption on the capacity for driving, as well as the capacity of tests to distinguish between doses with low THC levels, starting at 1 ng/ml.

These procedures have long been criticised by liberal politicians as well as lawyers active in this field. Even the federal office for road matters sees need for discussions. You can find further information on the web page.

10 years ago - mushroom magazine October / November 1997 Vor zehn Jahren im Oktober 1997 erblickte die erste Mushroom Trance CD (mit unter anderem Neuwrk, Morphem, Hallucinogen, Noosphere, Chris Zippel, Planet B.E.N. , Feuerhake u.v.m.) das Licht der Welt und wurde auch gleich im selben Monat in der Nedderfeld-Keller-Location befeiert.

Musikalische Gratulanten waren unter Morphem, Feuerhake, sowie Sangeet und Klangstrahler, die wir in der Oktoberausgabe interviewten. Weitere Themen im mushroom waren unter anderem das niederländische Trance Duo Quazar, ein schöner Sommerrückblick und der Start einer Psylopilz-Serie.

In der Novemberausgabe nahmen wir uns mit Oli »Space Tribe« Wisdom und Amanda zwei Vertreter der Tranceszene Down Under vor. Außerdem im Interview: Sam, Cynthia und Markus von der damaligen Chaishop.com Core Crew und Thomas Schumacher - denn damals widmete sich das mushroom magazine ja nicht nur Psytrance...

Ten years ago now, in October of 1997 the time had finally come for the first mushroom trance CD and was also celebrated in the same month. Musical congratulations were offered by Morphem, Feuerhake, as well as Sangeet and Klangstrahler, who we interviewed in that October issue. Further topics in mushroom were the Dutch trance duo Quazar, a nice revue of the summer, and the start of a Psylopilz-Series. In our November issue we focussed on two representatives of the trance scene down under, namely Oli »Space Tribe« Wisdom and Amanda. Besides this we had interviews featuring Sam, Cynthia and Markus of the original Chaishop.com Core Crew and Thomas Schumacher – mushroom magazine was not solely focussed on psytrance back then...
