PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Members,

As 2020 draws to a close, it would be an understatement to say that it has just been another year. We started the year with devastating and tragic bushfires, followed by floods, continued drought across major parts of Australia – and then the global pandemic, COVID-19.

During the 2019 financial year, the Society implemented a change in accounting systems, moving from MYOB to XERO – which has delivered substantial efficiencies in time as it operates via a live, cloud-based platform.

But as we do, Australians have pulled through and overcome these adversities – especially our beef industry, with cattle prices and record steer prices reaching over $7/kg on more than one occasion, and new stud records for bulls and females being achieved in numerous breeds.

The Murray Grey breed has certainly held up to the challenges of the industry, in both the commercial and stud sectors.

The challenges with nearly all local and royal shows, and field days, being cancelled across the country in 2020, and looking like the first-half of 2021 will be the same, the seedstock industry found new initiatives to promote their product to clients.

As we move into 2021, we may still find ourselves in unchartered waters regarding COVID-19, however we are all optimistic regarding the return of many key events across the country. Australia’s seedstock industry will once again be on a national, and international platform - with Beef 2021 promoting our industry far and wide.

The MGBCS hasn’t been immune to the prolonged drought and the reduction in numbers, as we see inventory down by approx. 1500 females which has impacted on our bottom line. Fortunately, we see our 2019 financial year as a break-even with our 2020

The board continues to look for savings in all areas.

One thing that COVID and lockdown has shown us is that you can still successfully run a business without physical meetings, and the associated costs, by utilising other digital and electronic platforms and systems.

After 15 years at ABRI, seven of which were spent with our breed, Kate Coghlan, resigned from her position to allow her to focus on the growth of her family business. We wish Kate all the success with her future endeavours. Hannah Scobie stepped into our EO position and is showing initiative and developing in role.

Thank you to Hannah, and also to my fellow Board Directors, for their continued support and dedication.

With many thanks and sincere appreciation, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution by Mr Charles Wallace. Charles, one of the breed’s greatest supporters and accomplished breeders, returned to the Board in 2016 before electing to retire recently. The breed is fortunate to have Ella Anderson now represent Tasmania on the Board.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT Taking over as the Executive Officer of the Murray Grey Society this year has been a huge high for myself. Taking over as the Executive Officer of the Murray Grey Society this year has been a huge high for myself. It has been an incredibly easy going and exciting transition with the help and strong support of the board and the members who I have been dealing with so far.

I have gotten to know most of you in the past few months and of which everyone has been more then happy to have a chat with me and tell me all about their studs. This has been quiet an interesting concept for me coming from Western Queensland which Murray Greys are not a common breed in that QLD environment. To learn about all the hard work members put into their pride and joy makes me extremely proud to be apart of such an enthusiastic society.

Obviously this year has been slow due to Covid-19, restricting most events and locking everyone down at one point or another, but every cloud has a silver lining. AuctionsPlus stood up to be the main point of call for sales & virtual shows became possible with facebook and other platforms.

Members utilised these online platforms well and were able to successfully sell and show their cattle during the year.

2021, fingers crossed, will be a better year with all the sales members have lined up, especially with a lot straight up, early in the year in February. We also have Beef Australia in Rockhampton of which we hope to see some of you at. We will have a site for the event, please feel free to come and introduce yourself and have a chat as we encourage more people to get involved with the society.

We have had a change to the youth committee this year, we welcome Jess Parker from Lochclyde Pastoral Co as the new youth president, taking over from Crystal Bell. Angela Eylward was elected as the new vice-president and Michelle Fairall as secretary. For the 2021 year, the youth have decided to take a different approach at the executive and have decided to include a 4th executive who will be filled by the 2020 Senior Ambassador recipient, Hannah Sanders.

The society also had Brigitte Collins & Crystal Bell travel overseas on scholarships to get a hands-on experience of how International Murray Grey breeders differ to Australia.

We are planning to make 2021 a great year for the youth society to make up for the miss this year, with the executive already planning some big and different ideas to get all the youth involved.

I have thoroughly enjoyed assisting the society and everyone involved and I look forward to seeing where the breed progresses to in the years to come. On behalf of the Murray Grey office, we would like to wish you all the best for the Holidays, and for health and happiness throughout the coming year.

(heifers) Heifer weaners on improved pastures at Cadfor at Binda, NSW.

CHASING THE HOLY GRAIL OF A PERFECT BEEF CARCASE Murray Grey breeder Rod Hoare may not have cracked the solution for breeding the perfect steer but he has come pretty close with a carcase score of 99 points.

Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, there was no public exhibition of the steers and they were judged on the hoof in the yards before processing at Milton District Meats.

The steer, Cadfor Q119, took out the grand champion carcase at the 2020 South Coast Steer Spectacular with the holy grail of hoof and hook competitions within its grasp.

The carcase results were screened on social media, with Q119 going on to pick up the grand champion carcase, losing just one point for fat cover.

Rod, of Cadfor Murray Greys, Binda, NSW, conceded the competition suited moderate framed, early finishing steers like Q119 and the bigger boned calves may have been too fat at heavier weights.

“It was like we had got a brush and just painted an even fat layer all over. The judge said he has never seen a carcase like it,” Mr Hoare said.

“Last year’s steer had perfect fat cover and not enough eye muscle,” he said.

“We have the right bull, great cows available and I just have to be brave enough to castrate the best calves.”

Rod runs around 60 split calving (moving to all spring) registered females with his partner Helena Warren.

The couple bred Q119 from their herd sire, Cadfor Falcon N2 and out of the oldest female in the herd, Cadfor Annette F178.

Q119 was weaned on March 2 at 310kg, given to Chevalier College, Burradoo, NSW, for grain finishing for 60 days and exhibited at the 2020 South Coast Beef School Steer Spectacular on May 7-9.

“The carcase was judged twice to ensure they hadn’t buggered up and independently did it as well.”

Q119’s carcase weighed 218.6kg, dressed out at 57 per cent, had 7mm of rib fat and an eye muscle area of 74sqcm.

“It will be a hard act to follow. We have two steers with Kelso High School for steer competitions later in the year,” Mr Hoare said.

“An important breeding strategy is to select the breeding females to suit the farm environment and bulls to suit the target market.

“Because our farm has a harsh winter, we find cows need a good fat cover to do well, produce a good calf and go back in calf.

“By selecting the best producers of our cows we ended up with a herd with above average fat cover.”

“We breed stud stock for commercial breeders and we target criteria that are important to achieve Meat Standard Australia premiums,” he said.

This mating produced the stud’s main herd sire, the black coated Cadfor Falcon N2.

“It is a measure of our success in our primary goal that the resulting steers are doing well in competitions.

The couple has a goal to produce weaners weighing 300kg at 200 days.

“At weaning, we always calculate an adjusted 200 day weight to provide comparisons between years,” Mr Hoare said.

“This year the calves averaged 356kg at weaning, 41kg birthweight and grew at 1.5kg/day so at 200 days they have been about 341kg.”

Rod aims to make pastures “rain ready” to cope with unpredicatable weather patterns.

“We chose Eylwarra Sands Falcon F33 to improve the muscling on one of our better producers Cadfor Beroleanne D138,” Mr Hoare said.

Adequate green shoots are retained to enable photosynthesis, and ensure the soil has adequate nutrients.

The siblings to Q119 were turned off through the CLTX at Carcoar in May and were split on coat colour into greys and blacks.

The grey steers averaged 376kg and fetched 399c/kg to return $1501 while the black steers averaged 373kg, sold for 408c/kg and returned $1522.

“We also want to make maximum use of rain whenever it happens and where it falls,” he said.

The differential should be of little importance to the bottom line because Murray Grey breeding stock can be bought more cheaply and produce a bigger and better carcase off grass, according to Rod.

“This requires minimising runoff, maintaining 100 per cent ground cover, using perennial species, especially phalaris, cocksfoot, fescue and paspalum, and fostering biodiversity.

The Murray Grey cows are also bigger and fetch more when culled – dry cows sold by Cadfor in May weighed 775kg and averaged $2309.

Waroona Murray Greys tops at $5500 for bulls, $4100 females Article by The Land

The strong cattle market and a great season in Central West NSW saw a solid result for the Hobbs family at their Waroona Murray Grey Production Sale near Molong last Friday.

There were eight bulls sold from the 13 offered to a top of $5500 and average of $4187.

Two stud females shared the $4100 top price honours, Waroona Taree L30 and Waroona Joan L27. Both were purchased by Benooka Park Murray Greys, Bega.

Taree L30 was also by Woodbourn France F48, while Joan L27 was by Golden Hero H7. Both were in calf to Woodbourn Larry L9.

Females were in demand, with a complete clearance of 12 stud females to a top of $4100, twice, and averaging $2641, while all 20 commercial pregnancytested-in-calf (PTIC) heifers sold to $2300 and averaged $2250.

Stud interest continued with Woodbourn Murray Greys, Tas, picking up Waroona Joan L11 with bull calf-at-foot, Waroona Quenton Q47, for $3000.

Kym Carlton of Carlinga Murray Greys, Boggabri, also purchased seven cows.

The $5500 top-priced bull was Waroona France P2, a son of Woodbourn France F48 out of Waroona Clarette E12, which was purchased by first time buyers Greenwich Park Pastoral Company, Greenwich Park.

Described as a well muscled bull, suitable for both cows and heifers, the two-year-old stood out for the amount of meat he was carrying according to Waroona principal Graham Hobbs.

France P2 was one of a draft of five bulls purchased by Greenwich Park for an average of $4300, as well as the top pen of 10 commercial PTIC heifers at $2300.

Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Co stud stock conducted the Helmsman auction that was interfaced with AuctionsPlus.

AYR PARK 10TH ON PROPERTY SALE RESULTS Stud and commercial buyers drove the 10th Ayr Park On Property sale to a top price of $10,500 and a complete bull clearance. With plenty of repeat buyers and new buyers on the day bidding, it drove the bull average to $5,077. Annika Whale, Double A Cattle Co. Cowra paid $10,500 for the top priced bull Ayr Park Quincey Q11, a son of Ayr Park Legend L31 and out of Ayr Park Robbie J46, a bull suitable for heifer joinings, boasting a calving ease figure +2.4, being in the top 10% and a birth weight figure of +2.3 sat him in the top 20%.

The bulls carcase EBV’s were also a highlight, ranking him in the top 5% for rib and rump fat and top 10% for IMF.

We were very pleased with the sale considering the severe drought we have been through for the last two years and then the uncertainty of COVID 19, not knowing if we could go ahead with the sale and have people on property. By going with Auctions Plus it helped our sale greatly as there were quite a few people bidding online, we will use them again in future sales.

Among the other major buyers were Neil Cummins a repeat buyer from Crookwell who purchased lot 8 for $6,000. Errowanbang Murray Greys, Carcoar purchased lot 3 for $5,000 and a yearling bull, lot 13 for $3,500.

They also purchased lot 22, an in calf heifer for $3,000.

New buyers, D.Violi from Griffith purchased lot 7, an Ayr Park Major son for $6,000. Ray Doak, Tillinga Murray Greys ACT purchased lot 14 a yearling bull for $5,500. G&T Refshauge purchased two bulls, lot 11 for $5,000 and lot 15 a yearling bull for $4,000. Other new buyers were Greenwich Park Pastoral purchasing lot 9 for $5,500 and Gunthorpe Ogle, Moree purchasing a bull and a heifer.

Sold 11 of the 15 females offered. The top priced female sold for $5,000 was lot 18, Ayr Park Antoinette P2 with her first calf at foot selling to Guy Burnett, Maefair Murray Greys Marrar who also purchased two unjoined heifers. New buyers Bill Richardson, Mouyi Murray Greys Brindebella purchased two females for a top of $4,000 and R&J Livestock purchased two joined heifers for $3,000 each.

SA BREED Our Annual Murray Grey January weekend this year was held in the Adelaide Hills. Focusing on the areas of Gumeracha, Meadows, Woodside and Mt Torrens, showcasing different attractions in the area.

Unfortunately, just before our weekend up in the hills, a major part of the area was razed by the Cudlee Creek Bushfire. We still decided to continue with our social weekend in the area to help support the local businesses that had been affected. Which in some ways seeing the devastation and driving through area’s affected gave you more of an understanding of how and what some of our members, communities and people had been through. Some managing to save their belongings, and unfortunately some losing everything.

Our Annual Murray Grey January weekend for 2021 will be held on the 15th to 17th January. We are planning to be in the Clare Valley area. A great area with plenty to see and do.

We started on Friday 17th with a visit to Sharen and Robert Randell’s - Kenton Murray Grey Stud at Gumeracha. A great start to the weekend with a great turn up for the delicious barbecue and chat while watching the sunset and having a walk around their stud. It was great to catch up with friends and meet some new members. This made it a very relaxing evening.

On Saturday we made our way to Meadows to start a busy day where we were shown around Richard and Kathy Koral’s Silver Angus Stud, we all enjoyed 14 MURRAY GREY BEEF CATTLE SOCIETY

We then ventured to Woodside for a self-guided visit to the Woodside Cheese Wright’s and Melba’s Chocolate Factory, both were enjoyed by all, especially the chocolate factory, I think the kids (large and Small) enjoyed the chocolate factory best, with quite a few purchases made.

We then headed to the Charleston Pub Beer Garden for our AGM, followed by dinner inside. A great place to relax for the end of a busy day and I think everyone was enjoying a drink by now.

MURRAY GREYS SUITED TO KING ISLAND CONDITIONS

Producing commercial cattle on King Island since he was a young man, Charles Lumsden, believes the Murray Grey breed are suited to the harsh conditions of Bass Strait, home to the renowned Roaring Forties winds.

Charles and his wife, Elizabeth, own three properties on King Island, with a young Murray Grey herd of 500 head running on a total of 588 hectares, including some leased country.

Growing up on a dairy farm in north east Victoria, Charles began his involvement with King Island from a young age, with his grandfather, Wallace Henry, first farming on King Island over a century ago.

“Grandpa Henry went to King Island in 1910, modelling himself on the great Sidney Kidman, and eventually became known as the Cattle King of King Island,” Charles said.

“Up until the 1950’s he owned 2400 hectares on the island, and when he passed away in 1961, my mum inherited 92ha at Cape Wickham in the north of the island, which we still own,” he said.

“Mum managed it herself until I was in my mid 20’s and I became involved in the family property in 1980. I was in the police force in Melbourne at the time, and because of King Island’s close proximity, I could spend all my time-off on the property.”

However, Charles first fell in love with the Murray Grey breed in 1976, while attending Marcus Oldham College.

“I was herd testing at Shepparton when I saw these fat placid white cows and asked the farmer what they were - that was my first exposure to Murray Greys,” he said.

“We have always loved their temperament, and confirmation.

The cows are small so they are economical to run, and don’t leave a big footprint on the soil,” he said.

“I remember thinking if I ever have cattle I’d have Murray Greys.”

“Effectively you can run more Murray Greys per acre so the cost per cow is less, and on our pug country, the cows are less likely to do damage to the land. They have small calves, with very low birth weights, that grow and fatten quickly.”

Fast forward 40 odd years, and the Lumsdens have 280 breeders running on their prime King Island country, utilising set stocking for most of the year.

At present, the family owns Rocky Point (92ha) at Cape Wickham; Boggy Creek (114ha) on the west coast of King Island, purchased from the family in 2017; and Mt Stanley Homestead (100ha) near the port of Grassy on the southern end of the island, purchased in January, 2016; as well as leasing a further 80ha on Lymwood, and 200ha on the Sea Paddock, which is a family property joining Boggy Creek with million dollar views over the ocean.

Charles said his Murray Greys had adapted well to the weather conditions, and despite the winds, which are ferocious in winter, and the rain, their dry cow’s winter on their Boggy Creek property.

“We have coast hills and bull rushes, and the cows all calve there from September onwards,” he said.

“It’s the best maternity ward that I know of, as the cows get protection from the winds and the rushes protect the calves. They don’t get overfat there and I have never lost a cow calving ever.

Those are the attributes that attracted the Lumsdens to Murray Greys, which they market predominantly to Greenham’s at Smithton in Tasmania.

“When I’m down on the island, I usually get a buyer out and he selects them out of the paddock. We also sell weaners to other producers on the island – the cattle we breed are well respected.”

Historically, the Lumsdens have utilised Woodbourn bloodlines, from Charles Wallace’s stud in Tasmania, and Charles said he preferred to buy bulls out of the paddock.

“Some years ago we purchased a bull that was the son of Willalooka Nagahoe and we kept his daughters. Presently we have a bull which has Willalooka Nagahoe in his pedigree. Our heifers and younger cows have been mated to him, and we are very pleased with his progeny.”

MONTEREY SALE TOPS $12,000

THIS year’s buoyant run of winter bull sales continued at Monterey stud’s winter fixture at Brunswick last week, with an eventual total clearance and muchimproved values some of the sale highlights.

The Buller family and the Monterey team, Karridale and Scott River, penned a top catalogue of Angus and Murray Grey bulls which attracted strong buying support from the South West and throughout WA, stretching from Esperance to Kalgoorlie to Port Hedland, along with some interstate interest.

The sale was also interfaced on AuctionsPlus.

The breed break down saw 26 of 28 Angus bulls (93pc) sell at auction to average $6212, up by $928 from last year’ sale.

But it was their grey-coated stablemates which retook the sale’s average stakes with 20 of the 21 Murray Grey bulls selling under the hammer to average $6575, a rise of $1486 in average from last year.

The three bulls overlooked at auction were soon snapped up following the sale to complete a total clearance of the sale team and cap off a successful day for the Monterey team.

The team of 49 well-grown and performed sires reflected the Monterey brand with plenty of comments heard before the sale praising the line-up of bulls.

Monterey’s winter bull sale marks the final bull sale for 2020 and with the traditional joining period fast approaching or already underway, the sale provides an ideal opportunity to fill sire requirements and replace any late injured bulls.

At the end of selling, the Elders and Nutrien Livestock selling teams led by auctioneers Nathan King and James Culleton respectively, cleared 46 Angus and Murray Grey bulls (94 per cent) at auction to average $6370.

This marked a significant $1162 lift in the overall average and clearance compared to last year’s sale.

The sale’s $12,000 top price tag was paid by consistent buyer of numbers at the top-end of the market Mark Forrester, Kanandah station, Kalgoorlie, for one of three bulls secured at the sale.

Mr Forrester’s top bid was reserved for the first bull offered to commence the sale’s second run of Murray Greys Monterey Prophet P58, an outstanding silver son of Ayr Park Honda H57 and a Monterey Majestic Boy

daughter Monterey Annabelle E225.

The mid-April 2018 born bull rocked the scales to 972kg with other raw data of 6.2 frame score (FS), 42cm scrotal circumference (SC) and 112cm2 eye muscle area (EMA).

Prophet also performed strongly with its BreedPlan figures ranking in the top 10pc of the breed for 200 and 400-day growth and carcase weight (CWT), top 10 to 15pc 600-day weight, retail beef yield (RBY) and all index values.

Mr Forrester earlier paid $8000 for a high growth and indexing bull, a late March 2018-drop Monterey Limelight L57 son ranging from top one to 20pc for all index values, top 5pc milk and top 5-15pc for all growth intervals.

Pearce Watling, Elders Donnybrook, bidding via phone for the Buick family, Arki Murray Grey stud, Western Flat, South Australia, paid the sale’s $10,500 second top Murray Grey bull price for the second bull to enter the sale ring, Monterey Pharaoh P28.

The grey 870kg early April 2018 born son of Monterey Lord Mayor and a Lindsay Windsor daughter scanned 6.7 FS, 38cm SC and 116cm2 EMA and was equally admired by the Buller family and offered three quarter share and procession.

Their top bid was directed to the youngest bull in the catalogue, an end of November 2018 born son of Monterey Hudson H296.

The young 670kg and 6 FS bull ranked in the breed’s top 5pc for milk, top 10-15pc for 400 and 600-day weights and top 15-20pc for 200-day weight.

Earlier in the sale the Tomlinsons paid $8000 for a 930kg Monterey Hamersley son, also with a strong spread of performance data.

The most prominent buyer of Murray Grey bulls was Nutrien Livestock pastoral representative Roger Leeds who racked up an account of five bulls at auction paying from $5000 to $6500 and one following the sale with the team of bulls heading to their new home of Bettini Beef, De Grey station, Port Hedland.

Paul Mahony, Nutrien Livestock stud and commercial cattle manager, took a $7000 bid for AuctionsPlus for a silver 934kg Ayr Park Honda son born early June 2018 with exceptionally strong BreedPlan performance across all traits and indexes. He remarked after the sale that it was a remarkably commercially focussed sale catalogue attracting widespread commercial interest across the State.

Arki Notawiseman was 1040kg 30mth old young sire by Rogialyn Hoffman with magnificent depth of body and great volume while displaying high growth figures.

As the season was still very tight here in SA following bush fires and near drought like seasons we were only able to move 8 bulls on the day. With the districts starting to recover from bush fires and rain started falling mid-March. Hence by the end of March we had sold 18 bulls with volume buyer being Lincoln Power of Woodside taking 6 bulls.

The commercial females we offered 50 and sold 50 to top at $1,950 and average $1,780.00.

Lot 29 topped at $1,950.00 for a pen of 5 - 28mth old heifers with 5 baby calves at foot sold to John Ashby from Mt Gambier, operating through Green Triangle Livestock Mt Gambier. Mr Ashby purchased 8 heifers for the day. The volume buyer was Jill Monely from Moree NSW, taking home 20 heifers operating through Auction Plus on the day. A second volume buyer was Nigel Watson, Pleasant View from Lucindale, taking home 16 heifers operating though Elders Lucindale.

the same conditions, and then they’re scanned at the same time.

“Independent scanning gives us a clear idea of what that animal is genetically.

“And we will select based on their temperament, their structure, and their carcase qualities as shown by that scan.”

Those that don’t make the grade for breeding are finished on grass and local hay before being processed at around 12 to 15 months, depending on the season.

Every time one of Stephen Koch’s cattle is processed, he heads straight into Broadford to examine the carcase directly with the butcher, Victor Bonacci.

In return, every 12 weeks or so, Mr Bonacci wanders through paddocks to view and discuss the next batch with Mr Koch.

“We look at what’s on the ground, what’s coming along and what needs more finishing,” Mr Bonacci said.

which also provide the very first grading of the new born’s temperament.

They’re weighed again at weaning aged around 200 days to track growth rates.

As yearlings, they are scanned for rib fat, rump fat, eye muscle depth and intramuscular fat as well as being independently assessed for structure.

Mr Bonacci is now also dealing directly with producers who have Atriem Murray Greys bloodlines and is looking at expanding the wholesale arm of his business.

“The grain of Steve’s Murray Greys is really fine and the temperament of his cattle is great,” he said.

“I can walk amongst the herd and pick out what I want.

“They’re not flighty, they’re not highly strung, they’re very placid, and that shows in the meat.”

The carcases are MSA-graded by the local abattoir, which provides useful feedback for Mr Koch but the butcher is confident of quality, irrespective.

“We don’t have to have them certified because we know they’re yearling beef, grass-fed; I know what they are, I go and pick them myself,” Mr Bonacci said.

It’s an informal partnership between Victory Meats and Atriem Murray Greys that looks set to blossom into something bigger.

Of course, those paddock assessments only start with temperament.

“We have a look and say this one was good, he was on better feed or came from this bloodline,” Mr Bonacci said.

“It means we know what is under the skin,” Mr Koch said.

The meat already goes to Melbourne, Kilmore, Flowerdale, Heathcote and a host of other towns.

Youth Report 2020 Written by Crystal Bell and the Youth Committee

The Murray Grey youth hit into 2020 with a bang and jumped right into the planning of what we thought and wanted the Vision 2020 Combined Charolais and Murray Grey youth show to be like, but we never thought it wouldn’t have happened, but as that old funny saying of if you have livestock, you have deadstock. COVID-19 hit the country in a hard sweep of taking out anyone’s plans of a youth show, or any livestock show in that matter for 2020. By 17th of April we where all sitting at home refusing to ponder what we may have been doing on that day. Some of us would be busy unloading our trucks of gear, hay for their cattle, kids running around all super exited to see friends that probably hadn’t seen since the last youth show. The Committee starting to lose hair, or what they had left while planning the show. Parents setting up caravans and tents and that sweet smell of livestock products already in the air. We can only dream of how good a combined youth event would have been.

The year wasn’t a total waste of time, and at least COVID-19 didn’t affect the Youth Presidents six-week Scholarship to America, Crystal Bell had a blast touring the country and learning about American Ranch Production. She spent some time at J.D Hudgins Brahmans, the home of “JDH Manso” the most prolific bull in the world with linage tracing to almost every Brahman in the world. It was an eye opener to livestock production and family connection with six family

divisions and 6 generations of Brahman breeding dating back to 1908. While at Hudgins, she toured each division including the Locke division of John Locke’s different method to grazing. Intensive grazing rotations where the cows are strip grazed of 30m x 30m sections of paddock with a fence devise that John created himself where it is on a timer and self relishes the fence to lift and let the cows move to the next section. A sure highlight and something Crystal has continued to practise at home of fast grazing rotations. She then ventured towards the Mexican border to Culpepper Boer goats to help prepare a team of 16 head of does and bucks for the San Antonio Livestock show. During her time and travels over Texas she ended up in Adair Oklahoma at Thorne Cattle and land herd of Simmentals, Main-Anjou, Angus and Braunvieh cattle who run multiple bred crossing mostly for selling fancy bred heifers and steers to the students apart of 4H and FFA programs, and Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, first sighting of American cold arse snow and traveling on a part of the famous Route 66.

Crystal finished her trip back In Houston livestock show, showing Brahmans for J.D Hudgins before flying home with 2 extra suitcases than when she landed. She would like to thank Geoff and Kate Buick and John and Hilde Gerathy for the support and sponsorship to herself and the youth program, for without them this trip would not have happened.

With the cancellation of the Youth show and the drought cancelling the National Show and Sale, it did mean a halt

in the planning of our 2020 youth heifer sale preparations of Benview Bella Q4 kindly donated by Aimee Bendotti from Western Australia. Bella was already living in Victoria at the cancellations and a long 3 day over the Nullarbor out of question, it was the Top of the Range to the rescue. While Bella wasn’t able to attend the sale in Glen Innes due to the Victorian border closing to the rest of the country. Bella fetched $5,000 and was the top priced female of the day. She sold to Kay Bell of Del-Gowrie Stud in Qld. Kay runs a disability business assisting young people to learn about livestock and showing. Bella will be shown in 2021 on the QLD circuit helping those with disabilities and giving courage to those who wouldn’t normally be given the chance to show cattle. Thank you to Aimee Bendotti of Benview Murray Greys, Doug Giles of Quicksilver transport, Crystal Bell of Prairie Falls Murray Greys and Falls Transport for your support in assisting in many ways of this youth heifer. Up and coming youth breeder Kareena Dawson of Tintara Murray Greys hit the high stakes mark and sold her Tintara Pedro P12 for $9000 and equal 2nd top bull price of the day. Pedro was also awarded the Mike Traynor Award of the yardsmen pick best Murray Grey Bull.

Brigitte Collins, winner of the New Zealand Exchange trip set off for her trip in November 2019 for 2 weeks, in her own words, ‘First week in NZ done and dusted, firstly flying in for the Canterbury Show where Josh from Dajory Murray Greys judged primarily the Murray Grey cattle and took part in the interbreed judging. Pleasing to see a good turnout of cattle across all breeds considering the Bovis disease which has severely affected the cattle industry in NZ, especially last year’s show numbers. I was able to take in and further my understanding of how New Zealand cattle are prepared and showed and it was a fantastic intro to my trip to see such a well-run show that was full of agricultural aspects for all to enjoy, I was also lucky enough to place in the senior junior judging and catch up with past Murray Grey Australian exchange winners. I’ve Managed to whack in a few tourists stops on way to stay with Silver Fern Murray Greys (Chris, Carolyn and Brad McIntosh) and Torrisdale Murray Greys (Barry MacDonald). I was lucky enough to be toured around their fantastic operations showcasing such a strong line of Murray Grey animals that any Murray Grey breeder would be proud to have within their herd.

As much as I enjoyed the beef cattle and the fantastic line up of cattle across various breeds, it was fantastic to get out and have a look at different farming lifestyles such as pigs, dairy, cropping/pasture and deer. I am extremely grateful for the welcoming arms I’ve had on my trip and appreciate all who took time out to show me their farms and showcase to me what fuels their passion for the industry they love. I would just again like to thank the Australian and New Zealand Murray Grey Society and Youth for this fantastic opportunity.

Lochclyde Pastoral Co (Jess Parker) had a successful 2020 with their young cattle, doing extremely well in both the Melbourne Royal Hoof and Hook Competition and having a young drop of calves topping the market. The steer was sired by one of their current sires in Lindsay Nigeria N96, purchased last year at the Lindsay on-property sale. With the sale topping vealers being the first calves from females sired by Eylwarra Sands Lincoln to be sold.

I would like to thank the Murray Grey breed and the Murray Grey youth program for their time in support in my time of being the youth president for the last two years. I have had a wonderful time being a mentor to many young people and I look forward to seeing you all at the next show and wish the incoming executive team and state reps a wonderful time and wish you all the best with your plans for the youth program

Well, the 2nd leg of my New Zealand Scholarship is completed, managing to visit six stud beef enthusiasts, a piggery, dairy farm and deer farm within the week I had left in such a beautiful part of the world. TOP OF THE RANGE 2020 The annual multi vendor, Top Of The Range sale, held at Glen Innes in Northern NSW is fast becoming a not to be missed, firm fixture on the Murray Grey calendar. Initiated and run by the New England Breed Promotion group, it offers registered MG bulls and both stud and commercial females from the group’s members.

The 2020 event was held physically in July and interfaced on Auctions Plus. A format that looks set to be adopted for future sales.

The Top Price in the bull catalogue was met 3 times by the following bulls at $10000, with all finding stud homes from one end of the country to the other.

The top accolades going to the MG Youth heifer having been donated by Benview MG’s of WA, with all proceeds going to the MG society’s Youth program. amounts of genetic variation and heritability, both of which are required to make genetic change.

Australian Murray Grey Genetic Trends in the Last Five Years In 2015, SBTS wrote an article detailing the genetic trends in Australian Murray Grey between 1987 and 2014. Five years later, this article will update the figures presented and highlight where changes have occurred and discuss potential reasons why.

Analysing the Australian Murray Grey genetic trends allows us to identify where the breed has come from, and the direction in which the breed is currently moving. A genetic trend is calculated as the average EBV or Index over time for all animals in the Murray Grey BREEDPLAN analysis. Genetic trends allow an assessment of whether the breed is moving in the desired direction. Breeders can identify any traits which may be moving in an undesirable direction, and work within their breeding objectives to improve these traits. Breed level metrics like these also provide an opportunity for individual breeders to identify unique niches within a breed where they may choose to focus their improvement.

entire breed, Murray Grey breeders interested in examining the genetic trends for their own herd compared to the breed as a whole can find this information in their BREEDPLAN herd reports. It is important to note that the breed trends reported in the herd report represent all Australian, New Zealand and United Kingdom Murray Grey animals in the analysis, whereas the graphs in this article are derived only from animals registered with the Australian Murray Grey Beef Cattle Society. Copies of your individual herd and/or completeness of performance reports can be downloaded in the member download area on Internet Solutions.

Genetic Change 2014 to 2019 Analysis of the relative genetic change in Australian Murray Grey between the 2014 and 2019 birth years (figure 1) reveals that the growth traits have the most genetic gain. The dominance of growth is a continuation of what was reported in 2015 and is a reflection that growth is an easily observed trait that is a popular breeding objective in most herds.

With all growth traits (except Milk) having strong genetic relationships (aka selection to increase one will lead to a correlated increase in the others), the large growth response has also lead to increases in Birth and Mature Cow Weights which can be undesirable from calving ease and cow efficiency perspectives. The increase in Birth Weight is likely to explain why limited genetic progress has been achieved in the two Calving Ease traits despite the relatively high levels of recording of calving ease scores (Figure 2).

Fortunately, the relationships between growth traits, while strong, are not absolute so it is possible to select for animals that ‘bend’ the growth curve if the relevant traits are recorded. The results presented in Figure 1 suggest that some selection for curve benders is occurring as there are larger selection responses in 2/4/600 Day Weights than in either Birth or Mature Cow Weights. However, selection for curve benders is only possible if both traits are recorded and analysis of recording trends shows that the recording of Mature Cow Weight in the Murray Grey breed has actually decreased by 7% between 2013 and 2019.

The level of ultrasound muscle and fat scanning in Australian Murray Grey (Figure 2) is comparable to the

wider seedstock industry (see https://bit.ly/381ZFYj for more detail). However, the selection responses of Rib & Rump Fat, and Retail Beef Yield are relatively low. Given as these traits have reasonable genetic variation and heritability, it can be concluded that these traits have received little selection emphasis across the breed. In contrast, significant selection response in Carcase Weight has been achieved over the period 2014 to 2019 which is likely to have been driven by the emphasis placed on growth, and to a lesser extent Eye Muscle Area. Figure 1 also shows that Intramuscular Fat (IMF) has more selection response than the other fat traits. As the heritability of IMF is broadly similar to Rump Fat, the higher response is likely to be due to a higher selection emphasis on this trait in order to meet MSA specifications. There is also noticeable differences between the IMF trends reported in the BREEDPLAN herd reports (derived from Australian, New Zealand and United Kingdom data, no selection response observed) and those reported here (Australian only).

The fertility traits, in particular Days to Calving, have remained relatively poorly recorded (Figure 2) and therefore there is potential for the Days to Calving selection responses to be improved. Days to Calving is the primary BREEDPLAN female fertility trait and as such has obvious benefits to cattle producers. The selection response of Days to Calving is also adversely affected by the trait’s low heritability though this is partially compensated for by the large genetic variation in the trait.

The Murray Grey breed has continued to make genetic progress in a number of traits. With few exceptions (e.g. IMF), this genetic change matches the trends previously observed in the 2015 version of this article.

As the levels of recording (with the exception of Mature Cow Weight which has decreased) have also remained roughly the same, this suggests that the breeding objectives of Murray Grey breeders have remained relatively constant in the last 5 years. That said, there are a number of traits vitally important to the profitability of a beef cattle enterprise where there is potential for enhanced recording and genetic gain (e.g. Days to Calving and Mature Cow Weight). Life member Howard Charles and wife Anne have a positive outlook on the future after Howard’s accident with the Nimmity Bell in July, putting him in hospital for 6 weeks. We wish Howard all the best with a speedy recovery.

As a result of high demand for beef prompted by Covid 19 panic buying in March this year, Courtney fast tracked her plans to supply home grown, grass fed Murray Grey beef direct to consumer. Courtney processes steers that average 300kg dressed weight between 14 - 16 months of age and sells Premium, Family and Budget packs within Central Victoria under her own label.

Vale - Kevin Sinkinson Torrens Vale Murray Greys, who passed away peacefully on 11th May 2020.

Today our Community farewelled Kevin and sadly, his son, David, with a drive through the township of Mount Torrens in South Australia, escorted by a C.F.S. truck with lights and siren, following a private service earlier in the morning.

Kevin was an enthusiastic Murray Grey breeder and supporter, particularly of younger people, for many years.

Always pleasant, interested, and ready for a yarn, we say thankyou.

Kevin 90 years old, shared the drive-by with his son David, who died suddenly on May 12th.

Vale - Richard (Dick) Buick 10/07/1939 to 24/11/2020

It is with great sadness that the Murray Grey Society acknowledges the passing of honorary life member Mr Dick Buick.

Dick lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday 24th November, surrounded by family.

As a farmer all his life, Dick (with his wife Jill-now deceased) became a member of the Murray Grey Society when he began the Arki Stud on Kangaroo Island (SA) in August 1973. The family moved to Western Flat near Bordertown in May 1984 and continued running the stud until it was passed onto son Geoff and wife Kate.

Dick and Jill also began the Beeamma stud in 2002 and this was passed onto daughter Denise and her husband Anthony in 2005.

Dick was awarded Life membership of the Society in 2016 when Murray Greys were the feature breed at the Royal Adelaide Show and were celebrating 50 years of showing, for his long standing involvement and promotion of the breed.

Dick was a staunch supporter of the Murray Grey breed and his knowledge and companionship will be sadly missed.
