Waroona Murray Grey Stud Welcome
Welcome to the 2025 Waroona Murray Grey Production Sale.
With the variable season in the beef production areas of Australia we sincerely thank you for your interest in the Waroona bulls and females we have on offer in the sale. We hope that conditions improve allowing fellow producers to take advantage of the improved market conditions available now and in the future.
The season has been relatively kind to our area without the drought conditions experienced in the south and flooding to our north which has allowed us to present cattle in good condition.
We have selected 12 bulls for consideration for stud and commercial use from a range of sires in use in the stud including Waroona France M26, Waroona France P16, Waroona Houston N1 and Beeamma Redline R34. The bulls are presented in the catalogue in order of age from oldest to youngest.
This year we are offering 8 proven breeding females from across the female families in the stud. Two of the heifers have calves at foot by our young sire Ganado R2 D2, a bull we feel has a big future in the Waroona herd and the Murray Grey breed. A third outstanding heifer is PTIC to R2 D2 and should calve prior to sale day.
A supplementary catalogue will be available on sale day with the details about calves born before the sale.
Ten commercial heifers are catalogued at Lot 21 for prospective commercial breeders.
As in the previous years, the sale will use the Helmsman system allowing buyers to bid on lots for sale simultaneously. It is also interfaced with AuctionsPlus allowing purchasers who cannot attend to the property sale the opportunity to purchase cattle to meet their breeding requirements.

EBV’s Explained
Calving Ease Direct: Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences in the ability of a sire’s calves to be born unassisted from 2 year old heifers.
Calving Ease Daughters: Calving Ease (DTRS) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences in the ability of a sire’s daughters to calve at 2 years of age without assistance.
Gestation Length: Gestation Length EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in the number of days from the date of conception to the calf birth date.
Birth Weight: Birth Weight EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in calf birth weight. Calf birth weight is the biggest genetic contributing factor causing calving difficulty in heifers. Please note, whilst low Birth Weight EBVs are favoured for calving ease they are also generally associated with lower overall growth potential. Consequently, birth weight and growth need to be carefully balanced. Fortunately, animals can be found that have both moderate Birth Weight EBVs and above average EBVs for later growth.
200 Day Milk: 200 Day Milk EBVs are estimates an animal’s maternal effect on the 200 day weight of its calf. In the case of sires, this estimates the maternal effect that his daughters will have on the 200 day weight of their progeny. Larger, more positive, 200 Day Milk EBVs are generally more favourable, depending on the environment.
Growth: In general, with all other things being equal, higher growth rates will lead to higher profitability. In most economic analyses conducted positive emphasis on growth is warranted. BREEDPLAN calculates three growth EBVs – 200 Day Growth, 400 Day Weight & 600 Day Weight. These EBVs are the best prediction of the animal’s ability to grow to weaning (200 day), yearling (400 day) and later ages (600 day). 200 Day Growth EBVs are therefore important to vealer breeders, 400 Day Weight EBVs for yearling breeders and 600 Day Weight EBVs for breeders of heavy steers.
200 Day Growth: EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in live weight at 200 days of age due to their genetics for growth. Calculated from the weights of calves taken between 80 and 300 days of age.
400 Day Weight: 400 Day Weight EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in live weight at 400 days of age. Calculated from the weights of calves taken between 301 and 500 days of age.
600 Day Weight: 600 Day Weight EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in live weight at 600 days of age. Calculated from the weights of calves taken between 501 and 900 days of age.
Mature Cow Weight: Mature Cow Weight EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between cows in live weight at 5 years of age. Mature Cow Weight EBVs are expressed in kilograms (kg) and are calculated from weights taken on the cow when her calf’s 200 day (weaning) weight is being measured.
Scrotal Size: Scrotal Size EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in scrotal circumference at 400 days of age. Increased scrotal circumference is associated with increased semen production in bulls, and earlier age at puberty of bull and heifer progeny. Increased scrotal circumference also has a favourable relationship with days to calving, such that bulls with larger scrotal circumference tend to have daughters with shorter days to calving.
Days to Calving: Days to Calving EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in time from the start of the joining period (i.e. when the female is introduced to a bull) until subsequent calving. Lower, or more negative, Days to Calving EBVs are generally more favourable.
Carcase Weight: Carcase Weight EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in hot standard carcase weight (as defined by AUSMEAT) at 650 days of age. Larger, more positive, Carcase Weight EBVs are generally more favourable.
Eye Muscle Area (EMA): Eye Muscle Area EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in eye muscle area at 12/13th rib site in a standard weight steer carcase. Larger, more positive, EMA EBVs are generally more favourable.
Rib Fat: Rib Fat EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in fat depth at the 12/13th rib sitein a standard weight steer carcase. More positive or more negative Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals relating to the finishing ability of your animals. A bull with a Rib Fat EBV of -0.4 mm would be expected to produce leaner calves than a bull with a Rib Fat EBV of +0.4 mm, relative to carcase weight.
Rump Fat: Rump Fat EBVs are estimates of the genetic differences between animals in fat depth at the P8 rump site in a standard weight steer carcase. Stock with positive fat EBVs are likely to produce progeny that are fatter, or more earlier maturing, on average than stock with lower or negative fat EBVs. Increasing fat depth leads to a decrease in retail beef yield, however most market specifications require a minimum fat depth. Breeders aiming to breed leaner, higher yielding cattle may select for lower fat EBVs. Breeders wishing to finish their animals earlier may tend to select animals with moderate fat EBVs.
Retail Beef Yield (RBY): Retail Beef Yield (RBY) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in boned out retail beef yield in a standard weight steer carcase. Larger, more positive, RBY EBVs are generally more favourable.
Intramuscular Fat (IMF): Intramuscular Fat (IMF) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13 rib site in a standard weight steer carcase. Larger, more positive, IMF EBVs are generally more favourable.
Vealer Terminal Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical crossbred commercial herd using Murray Grey bulls to target vealer production. Vealers are finished on grass and target 430 kg live weight (225 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months of age. Daughters are NOT retained for breeding and thus no consideration is given to maternal traits.
Supermarket Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical Murray Grey commercial herd targeting production of steers for the domestic supermarket trade. Selected heifers are retained for breeding and thus maternal traits are of importance. Steers are either finished on grass, or grain fed for 70 days, and target 470 kg live weight (260 kg HSCW and 12 mm P8 fat) at 15 months of age. In response to industry feedback a premium has been placed on marbling.
Heavy Grass Fed Steer Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical Murray Grey commercial herd targeting pasture finished steers for heavier grass fed markets. Selected heifers are retained for breeding and thus maternal traits are of importance. Steers target 620 kg live weight (330 kg HSCW and 14 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age. In response to industry feedback a premium has been placed on marbling.
Northern Terminal Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical commercial herd using Murray Grey bulls over cows containing some Bos indicus content. Steers target 550 kg live weight (300 kg HSCW and 10 mm P8 fat depth) at 27 months of age. In response to industry feedback a premium has been placed on marbling.
Breeder Replacement Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for a typical Murray Grey commercial herd targeting the production of weaners or yearlings. Selected heifers are retained for breeding and thus maternal traits are of importance. Steers target 440 kg live weight (230 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months of age.

Guarantee:
All bulls have been inspected for soundness. However, if up to 12 months after delivery an animal is proved to be infertile or incapable of natural service (not resulting from an accident), we will offer a suitable replacement or credit for our next sale, minus the salvage value of the animal. This is provided the problem was not caused after the sale. The guarantee covers the purchase value of the bull, without interest or damages. The claim must be accompanied by a relevant veterinary certificate.
Insurance:
Please insure your animals as they are your responsibility at the fall of the hammer.
Transfer:
All animals will be transferred by the vendor with the Murray Grey Society unless otherwise indicated on the Buyers Instruction Slip.
Rebate:
A 2% rebate commission offered to outside agents introducing buyers in writing 24 hours prior to the sale and settling for same within 7 days of invoice.
The Sale:
The vendors reserve the right to place a reserve on any lot. These reserves will remain for the lifetime of the animal; i.e. no cheaper off farm later.
On arrival intending purchasers need t register and receive a bidding number.
Helmsman System:
For the duration o the sale, all animals are on the market simultaneously. You may bid on any animal of any lot number at any time, by filling in a bid card with your bid price, the lot number and buyer number and give it to a “runner”. These bids will be recorded at the table in the order that they are received and marked on the board.
Where bids of equal amounts on the same animal are received the first bid received will be the standing bid.
You may open bidding at the reserve price indicated for each animal and contest bids in no less than $100 amounts.
Bids are recorded with the buyer number on a large board adjacent to the animals. You can bid on any number of animals at once and see at a glance whether your bid stands or has been over bid.
A BID ONCE SUBMITTED AND RECORDED CANNOT BE RETRACTED.
If any dispute arises respecting a bid, the dispute will be decided by the auctioneer.
All lots are open for the sale for the full duration of the sale and all lots will conclude at the same time. If your “first choice” animal goes beyond your limits you can still bid on any other animal in the sale.
The sale will remain open for 30 minutes initially.
At the conclusion of 30 minutes a 2 minute bid clock will commence. A bid on any lot will restart the countdown clock. Any further bids on any lot will trigger the same process until a full 2 minute “no bid” period when the sale will conclude on all lots.
The stock shall be at the risk of the buyer from the fall of the hammer. With the Helmsman system all lots are knocked down at the same time.
Bidding will be exclusive of GST, with GST being added to the final auction price ad invoiced to the purchaser.
