En s'inspirant de l'Odyssée antique , nous avons écrit l'histoire moderne d'une Odyssée, où nous y découvrons nos pays, guidé par les Droits de l'Homme et la liberté d'expression.

Getting inspired by the ancient Odyssey, we wrote the story of a modern Odysseus who discovered our countries, guided by the Human Rights and the freedom of expression.

Pourquoi?

"Nous vivons une période particulière de l'histoire de l'Europe.

La crise économique fait rage , des pays sont ballotés, malmenés, saignés à blanc.

Les étudiants depuis deux ans reçoivent des informations qu'ils ont du mal à interpréter. Ils sont noyés dans les informations provenant des médias.

Nous voulons au travers de notre aventure pédagogique les aider a décoder tout cela.

L'Odyssée est une métaphore de ce que nous vivons actuellement .

Le chemin d'Ulysse est semé d'épreuves, de souffrances, de choix, d'espoir, de soif de liberté.

Qui mieux que les jeunes peuvent décrire leur pays, leurs visions des choses, leurs peurs, leurs attentes.

Nous sommes quatre pays a nous être unis pour écrire cette Odyssée moderne.

Nous avons le bonheur de compter parmi nous la Grèce. Berceau de notre civilisation et de la démocratie.

Depuis plus d'un demi siècle, l'Europe est un espace de paix, de démocratie, de respect des droits de l'homme.

Cela est il toujours vrai ?

La peste brune est de retour partout en Europe, l'étranger est le responsable de tous les maux.

Tordons le cou à ces préjugés et mettons les bons mots sur les bonnes choses Ulysse chant VI "Hélas : en quelle terre ai-je encore échoué ?

Vais je trouver des brutes, des sauvages sans justice ou des hommes hospitaliers craignant les Dieux ?"

Why ?

"We live in a particular period in the history of Europe.

The economic crisis rages, countries are buffeted, battered, bleading.

Students for two years receive information they struggle to interpret. They are embedded in the information from the media.

We want through our educational adventure to help them decode this.

The Odyssey is a metaphor of what we are experiencing.

The path of Ulysses is full of hardship, suffering, choice, hope, longing for freedom.

Who can describe, better than young people their countries, their visions of things, their fears, their expectations.

We are four countries and we are united to write this modern Odyssey.

We are fortunate to have with us in Greece. Cradle of civilization and democracy.

For over half a century, Europe is an area of peace, democracy, respect for human rights.

Is this still true?

The brown plague is back across Europe, the alien is responsible for everything bad.

Tweak the neck to these prejudices and put the right words on the right things.

Première partie – Belgique Il est là sur le quai de la gare.

Une valise à ses pieds, un sac contenant des livres.

Il part , il veut voir de ses yeux ce que devient la vieille Europe.

La crise économique fait rage, les partis extrémistes renaissent, les symboles que l'on croyait oubliés réapparaissent.

Sa ville se meurt, elle est devenue un cimetière industrielle. Ses entreprises étaient réputées dans le mode entier. L'acier, la faïence, le verre ont fait sa richesse. Elle était il y a soixante ans l'une des régions les plus riches du monde.

Aujourd'hui un quart de la population est sans emploi.

Les jeunes sont désabusés et se réfugient dans des paradis artificiels.

Il veut voir, il veut comprendre.

Il prend la route comme son père pour trouver un avenir meilleur.

Des souvenirs d'enfance l'envahissent.

L'effervescence des voyages dans la famille en Italie. Les gens du sud venus chercher un emploi et qui ont quitté leur patrie ensoleillée.

Le sol se dérobe sous ses pieds, l'émotion est trop forte. Le doute l'envahit, fait il le bon choix ?

Deuxième partie – France Le voilà en France, il vient de passer la frontière il y a maintenant 15h caché dans le coffre d'une Ford Escort, le conducteur a accepté de le passer en échange de 3000 euros. Il pense trouver des rues pavés d'or, des super beaux quartiers, des boutiques chics, des jolies filles à tous les coins de rue. Il espère manger de la baguette, du camembert et boire un bon verre de vin et goûter à pleins d'autres spécialités françaises. Il va enfin voir la Tour Eiffel, l'Arc de Triomphe, le Louvre, l'Opéra, bref tous les monuments de Paris. La voiture s'arrête, le coffre s'ouvre. Le conducteur lui dit d'un air pressé et mal à l'aise : "Allez sort, on est arrivé.

Le voilà à Paris, il découvre que les rues ne sont pas pavés d'or, mais toute noires avec des détritus qui jonchent les trottoirs, des mégots parterre, et un monde pas possible qui marchent et qui courent dans tous les sens.

Il est seul, dans un endroit qu'il ne connait pas, avec pour seul bagage un sac plastique rempli d'objets artisanaux et sentimentaux comme un collier, des photos de sa famille et quelques euros en poche.

Il se met à chercher un endroit où passer la nuit. Il demande à un passant : "- Pouvez-vous m'indiquer où se trouve un hôtel pas cher, s'il vous plait ?

- Je connais un hôtel à 30 euros la nuit, cela vous convient-il?

- Non, désolé c'est trop cher.

- Il y a aussi un foyer qui accueille des personnes pas très loin de l'endroit où j'habite, vous Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

voulez venir avec moi ?

- Oui, j'accepte. Merci c'est très gentil à vous."

Après une semaine passée à Paris il a découvert le métro. C'est impressionnant, il fait froid, il y a plein de monde, cela sent mauvais, il y a pleins d'indications mais c'est bien pratique car on peut se déplacer rapidement, et traverser Paris en un rien de temps.

Il a enfin vu la Tour Eiffel, quelle est grande et belle, surtout le soir car elle brille de mille feux. C'est un spectacle impressionnant. Il est monté jusqu'au dernier étage et les gens en bas étaient tout petit petit comme des fourmis.

La vue était magnifique on voyait tout Paris, la tour Montparnasse, la Seine qui serpentait, le sacré Cœur une église qui domine la ville perchée sur une colline, les tours de la défense, le Louvre, et Notre Dame la cathédrale de Paris.

Il a goûté aux fameux escargots dans la brasserie à côté de chez lui. Beurk, ce n'est pas bon ! Par contre les fromages sont excellents : le brie, la vache qui rie, le reblochon, le camembert avec du pain frais que c'est délicieux !

Après avoir passé plusieurs mois en France, un jour en se promenant sur les Champs Elysés, cette avenue, la plus belle du monde, il pense partir vers un autre pays. En effet, il veut découvrir d'autres cultures, d'autres personnes et faire Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

Mais oĂš va-t-il aller ?

Troisième partie - Italie Il erre depuis longtemps dans les environs de la gare de Paris. Il réalise qu’il n’a que de la petite monnaie dans sa poche, puis il se rend compte qu'il ne serait jamais en mesure de se permettre de voyager confortablement en train. Il regarde autour de lui et voit un camion stationné avec une plaque d'immatriculation étrangère dont il ne reconnaît pas la provenance. Il envisage la possibilité d’y grimper, de se cacher dans la benne porte-outils et de chercher l’aventure. "Qui sait où cela va me mener ?", penset-il. Il décide de se débarrasser de sa valise trop volumineuse pour ne transporter que ce qui est nécessaire. Il vérifie que personne ne le voit, puis il se faufile à l’intérieur de la benne et attend le départ. Il a peur. Il ne sait pas vers quoi il va devoir faire face, mais le désir de s’en aller est trop fort.

Le camion part et le long du parcours il a dû endurer l'inconfort et les odeurs âcres de l’huile et du mazout. Le trajet lui semble interminable. La faim, la soif le tourmentent. L'incommodité de l'étroit endroit l'empêche de se reposer. Douze heures de voyage, douze longues heures vont finalement le conduire à destination. Il se rend compte qu'il est arrivé quand il entend le camionneur trafiquer la serrure des hayons. Il y a quelqu’un d’autre à côté de lui, mais il n’arrive pas à comprendre sa langue. "Où suis-je arrivé?" se demande-t-il. Des souvenirs d'enfance le ramènent à ses précédents voyages en Italie. Est-ce peut-être la langue italienne qu’il est en train d’entendre? Il attend le bon moment pour sortir sans être vu et cela ne se produit que lorsqu’ il perçoit le silence absolu des alentours.

Une fois descendu, il regarde autour de lui: il s’aperçoit qu’il est à la mer. Il se trouve à proximité d'un port. En face de lui des cargos, des bateaux de pêches et des bateaux de toute sorte.

affamé, il marche à la recherche d'un endroit où se reposer et manger. Il se rend compte qu'il a du mal avec cette langue, mais aussi que non loin de là il y a un groupe de personnes qui parlent une langue plus familière pour lui. Il s'approche d'eux et demande: "C'est quoi cet endroit ?". Ils le regardent avec méfiance et lui répondent : "- Tu es à Marina di Ravenna, dans le port, en Italie.

- Pouvez-vous me dire où je peux trouver un endroit où dormir?

Mais je n'ai pas d'argent, sauf quelques malheureux euros.

- T'es un clandestin, pas vrai ?

- Comment l’avez-vous su ?

- Nous sommes clandos, nous aussi. Et la vie n'est pas facile pour nous. Si l’on se fait prendre, on va rentrer au pays. Est-ce que tu as envie de nous rejoindre? Tu pourras même gagner un peu d'argent.

- Comment ?

- Nous, on pêche des palourdes qu’on va vendre ensuite au noir à quelques restaurateurs. Il faut juste faire attention à ne pas se faire choper, car la pêche des palourdes, c'est illégal ici.

- J'ai pas le choix ... Je suis obligé d’accepter."

Il commence ainsi à travailler au noir et à vivre avec ses nouveaux amis. Il découvre que l'endroit où il va séjourner est une petite baraque sale, abandonnée et loin des regards indiscrets. Il passe ses nuits à pêcher et ses journées à visiter les merveilles de ce lieu. Après une semaine, avec le peu d'argent gagné, il achète un billet pour le bus qui le mènera dans le centre-ville de Ravenne. Monté dans le bus, il voit qu'un homme en uniforme est en train d’avancer vers lui. Son cœur se met à battre fort. L'angoisse le saisit, il commence à suer, sa respiration devient haletante, comme s’il venait de courir, il a l'impression que tout le monde le regarde. Après l’avoir rejoint, l'homme en uniforme lui demande quelque chose dans cette langue si peu familière.

"- Biglietto, per favore".

Le regard effrayé, il reste silencieux. Le contrôleur comprend qu’il est un étranger.

"Ticket, please".

Il sort un billet de sa poche et le lui donne. Le contrôleur s'en va, et il pousse un soupir de soulagement.

Arrivé en ville, il se dirige vers le centre.

Il gagne la Piazza del Popolo, dont les colonnes sont dédiées à Saint Vitale et Saint Apollinaire, les patrons de la ville. En face il y a l'Hôtel de Ville avec ses dentelles de style vénitien. Il visite la Basilique de Saint Vitale avec sa caractéristique forme octogonale très semblable à celle de Sainte-Sophie à Istanbul, qu’il a visitée auparavant. Il visite le Mausolée de Galla Placidia, avec ses mosaïques reluisantes et il tombe en admiration devant leur beauté. Il visite le Mausolée de Théodoric et le fameux tombeau de l'illustre poète Dante Alighieri.

En marchant dans les rues de la ville, il sent un nouveau parfum. Il le suit et il arrive en face d'une maisonnette blanche à rayures vertes. Il s’approche intrigué et affecté par un certain creux à l’estomac. Une famille italienne est en train de manger un drôle de pain avec quelque chose à l'intérieur. Il se tourne vers la propriétaire du kiosque et maladroitement il demande: "Can I have that ?" en lui indiquant ce bizarre pain parfumé.

Il se trouve à goûter pour la première fois la piadina romagnole, farcie avec le célèbre fromage squaqquerone, de la roquette et du jambon cru. Il trouve tout cela délicieux. La propriétaire du kiosque aux joues rubicondes et au regard sympa lui offre un verre de vin rouge Sangiovese.

Les jours suivants, il goûte aux autres spécialités du coin comme : les cappelletti à la bolognaise, les passatelli dans le bouillon, les nouilles aux champignons, la polenta avec de la saucisse, les rillons et le savarin de Romagne. Il trouve que les habitants de cette ville ont une vraie richesse gastronomique.

Il reste à Ravenne trois mois. Pendant ce temps, il se lie d’amitié et sympathise avec les gens du pays et leur langue qu'il trouve particulièrement douce.

Une nuit il sort avec ses camarades de baraque pour aller à la pêche. Comme ils sont au large, ils entendent soudain un hélicoptère qui est en train de survoler la mer. Un jet de lumière les embrase. C'est l'hélicoptère de la police. On les a découverts.

Le trouble est si grand, ainsi que la peur. Bientôt la navette de la police viendrait les attraper et les arrêter.

"Quoi faire?"

La première des solutions est de profiter de l’agitation en cours pour se glisser, inaperçu, dans les eaux de la mer. Sombrer et nager à l’écart du jet de lumière.

Et c'est ce qu'il fait !

Une fois assez loin, il remonte à la surface juste à temps pour voir ses copains se faire arrêter. Il sait déjà ce qu’il va leur arriver. Le sort de tous les immigrants illégaux. Ils seront rapatriés et chacun sera obligé d'aller au-devant de son destin : guerres, faim, persécutions, désespoir ...

Il nage jusqu'à gagner un rocher. Il se repose et attend le lever du jour. A l'aube, un vieux yachtman le voit et le secourt.

"Hé, monte. Je vais t’emmener chez moi."

"Merci ! " Chez le vieux yachtman il trouve un repas chaud, la chance enfin de prendre une douche et de mettre des vêtements, vieux mais propres. La femme du vieux yachtman se dispute avec son mari.

Elle ne le veut pas dans sa maison. Elle ne veut pas héberger un clandestin. Elle veut le dénoncer.

Pour ne pas créer de problèmes, il sort en cachette et il s’en va. Il parcourt à pied la plage de Marina di Ravenna. Il est encore tôt dans la matinée, mais il y a déjà quelques personnes qui se promènent : un homme avec son chien, une mère avec ses enfants jouant sur la rive, un couple de jeunes à cheval fait éclabousser l'eau de la mer, quelques jeunes font de la planche à voile et un autre navigue à la voile. éprouve un sentiment de liberté, mais aussi de profonde solitude, car il est tout seul, il ne connait personne et il n'a plus d'endroit où aller. Il atteint la baraque désormais inhabitée. Il ramasse l'argent que ses anciens copains avaient caché dans des matelas jetés par terre. Ce n’est pas beaucoup, mais ça devra suffire pour un bon bout de temps. Il ramasse ses quelques affaires dans un sac et il sort. Il ne peut pas rester là, ni continuer à travailler illégalement sans connaître aucun droit.

Il marche jusqu'au bout de la jetée. Il s’assoit au pied du phare et regarde la mer. Des cargos chargés de conteneurs sont en train d’entrer dans le port, un ferry transporte des voitures et du monde d'un côté à l'autre, des bateaux de plaisance sont amarrés dans les yacht-clubs.

Il rêve. Il rêve d'être un citoyen du monde qui n'a pas seulement des devoirs mais aussi des droits. Il rêve de son pays désormais si loin, souvent en guerre et sans perspectives pour l'avenir.

Dévasté. Marina di Ravenna semble encore un petit coin de paradis : grande ouverture pour ceux qui viennent de loin, mais pas pour ceux qui y viennent illégalement. Le racisme? Il l’a connu, lui aussi ! Juste un peu, heureusement ! Des épisodes isolés.

Las de continuer à vivre comme un clandestin, il décide de partir.

Il voit un gros bateau prêt à quitter le port, il décide de monter à bord et de continuer à son bord son aventure.

Qui sait où va-t-il aborder?

Quatrième partie - Voyage vers la Grèce Odysseus se sent fatigué. Il s'assoit sur un banc face au navire prêt à prendre la mer et ferme les yeux. Comment a-t-il pu gâcher sa vie ?...

Il se rappelle son voyage en train, quand il a quitté sa ville en Belgique et son idée folle de vivre comme un clandestin. Il pourrait voyager n'importe où au sein de l'Union Européenne avec uniquement sa carte d'identité de citoyen belge, mais il a été choqué, si touché, par l'image d'Ahmet ! Ahmet était assis à côté de lui dans le train. Ils ont parlé. Il était nerveux et il a paniqué quand le contrôleur lui a demandé ses papiers. La couleur de sa peau l'a trahi...Odysseus l'a vu descendre du train accompagné d'un agent de police. Ahmet l'a regardé, plein de désespoir. Sur le siège vide à côté d'Odysseus se trouvait un livre.

C'était celui d'Ahmet. Odysseus de James Joyce, en anglais. Il l'a pris et l'a ouvert. Il y avait une dédicace sur la première page, écrite dans une langue qu'il ne connaissait pas, probablement la langue maternelle d'Ahmet. Il l'a refermé. Quelqu'un avait dessiné un petit coeur sur la couverture...

Ainsi, il a décidé de vivre comme un clandestin, de comprendre ce qu'ils ressentent, tous ceux qui viennent en Europe avec leurs rêves et leurs espoirs qui, la plupart du temps, s'envolent.

Il a donné presque tout son argent afin d'entrer en France illégalement. Il vivait de rien, mais il a fait la connaissance de personnes et rencontré des situations qu'il n'aurait jamais pu faire autrement.

Et maintenant, quoi ?...

Il sent une présence près de lui et ouvre les yeux. Un homme est assis sur le banc. Il fume, perdu dans ses pensées. Il se retourne, il le regarde et sourit - Kalimera !

- Odysseus connaît ce mot. Grec !

- Bonjour!

- Français ? Je ne parle pas le français ! Parlez-vous anglais ?

- Je parle anglais, oui. Etes-vous grec ?

- Oui, je m'appelle Manolis et je suis de Crète !

Manolis lui serre la main.

- Je m'appelle Odysseus et je suis belge.

- Odysseus !!! Un prénom grec ! Allez-vous voyager à bord de ce Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

bateau?

- J'y réfléchis. Je n'ai pas de destination en particulier. Et vous ?

- Je viens de croiser mon fils. Il travaille sur ce bateau. C'était une coïncidence de le retrouver ici, je vais à Ancona. Je suis chauffeur de camion et je transporte des légumes de chez moi jusqu'en Europe centrale. Maintenant je retourne en Grèce. Je prendrai le ferry pour Patras et ensuite je continuerai jusqu'en Crète.

- C'est un long voyage ! Je ne suis jamais allé en Grèce.

Odysseus raconte à Manolis l'aventure qu'il a commencé.

- Venez donc avec moi comme cela vous connaîtrez la Grèce. Je serai ravi de vous avoir comme compagnon de voyage. Je n'aime pas être seul et vous avez l'air d'être un homme sympathique.

C'est comme cela qu'Odysseus et Manolis voyagent ensemble jusqu'Ancona et ensuite par bateau jusqu'à Patras, cette fois en tant que passager normal. C'est là qu'il regrette d'avoir laissé ses bagages à la gare à Paris. Ses livres lui manquent, maintenant, pendant les longues heures à bord. Sans arrière-pensée, il demande à Manolis s'il a des livres avec lui. Il sourit, ouvre son sac à dos et lui tend un livre.

- Il porte ton nom ! Prends-le !

Odysseus reste figé, sans voix, à regarder le livre et le petit coeur dessiné sur la couverture. Il n'en croit pas ses yeux. C'est Odysseus, le livre qu'Ahmet a laissé sur le siège du train...

- Comment avez-vous trouvé ce livre ?

- Pourquoi demandez-vous cela ? Ma fille, Pénélope, est étudiante à Paris et elle a trouvé des livres jetés par terre dans une gare à Paris. Je l'ai vue il y a quelques jours et elle m'a donné les livres pour les ramener à la maison. Elle rentre dans quelques semaines et elle veut les livres.

- Incroyable !... Une telle coïncidence ! Où sont les autres livres ?

Ils sont à moi !

Odysseus raconte à Manolis ce qui est arrivé à Paris.

- Ils sont dans le camion. Je vous les rendrez, mais Pénélope sera triste...

Manolis sourit.

A l'horizon, ils aperçoivent le port de Patras.

En arrivant à Patras ils n'ont pas beaucoup de temps pour visiter la ville. Manolis est pressé et ils sont juste allés déjeuner au centre ville. Odysseus est impressionné par le grand nombre de personnes noires autour du port. Manolis explique : - Ce sont tous des clandestins ou des réfugiés qui veulent gagner l'Italie. Ils cherchent la moindre occasion de se cacher dans ou sous un camion et embarquer, parfois au risque de leur vie. Ils ne veulent pas rester en Grèce mais quelques fois ils sont piégés. La Grèce est la porte de l'Europe pour les réfugiés et immigrés qui viennent d'Asie ou d'Afrique à cause de sa position géographique.

Même s'ils réussissent à quitter la Grèce et à atteindre un autre pays, les lois Européennes les renverront dans le pays d'où ils viennent, c'est-à-dire la Grèce, alors ils sont piégés ici. C'est très triste. Ils essaient de survivre vivant dans des wagons de train vides, près du port, ils mendient pour avoir à manger ou vendent des cd illégalement. Les gens d'ici ont peur d'eux et ils ne rateraient pas une occasion de se débarrasser d'eux...

Odysseus se rappelle son expérience à Ravena.

Avant de quitter Patras, ils visitent la cathédrale de Saint Andreas. Manolis, comme la plupart des grecs, est croyant et veut allumer une bougie pour le salut de son âme.

Tandis que le camion quitte la ville, Odysseus remarque au loin le grand pont suspendu de Rion-Antirion, un miracle de la technologie moderne. « Tant de contradictions dans notre monde » pense-t-il.... Nous nous concentrons sur le matériel et nous oublions d'être des êtres humains...

Combien d'hommes ont travaillé sur ce pont?

Beaucoup étaient certainement des immigrés, probablement maltraités... » Vers Athènes Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

Odysseus s'endort dans le camion. Après deux heures ils arrivent à Athènes et Manolis le réveille pendant qu'il gare le camion sur les quais, près du navire. Il y a grève et le navire partira à minuit alors Manolis suggère de prendre le métro ou le train jusqu'au centre ville d'Athènes. Qui sait si Odysseus aura l'occasion de revoir Athènes ? Premier arrêt : le square Omonia. Des immigrés partout : des noirs, des asiatiques, des blancs, des sans-abri, des mendiants...Odysseus se sent mal. Il voit un estropié en train de mendier et il se sent chanceux d'être en bonne santé. Il pense à la vanité de la richesse inutile, alors que la seule richesse est la bonne santé. Prochain arrêt : le square Syntagma. Une camionnette de solidarité distribue des biens pour les sans-abri et les nécessiteux. Donc, il y a toujours des gens qui s'occupent des autres, et qui s'en moquent qu'il s'agisse de grecs ou d'immigrés.

Il y a toujours de l'espoir dans le monde...

Le temps presse et il veut voir l'Acropolis, même si ce n'est que de loin. Ils marchent le long de la voie piétonne de la station de métro jusqu'à l'entrée du site archéologique de l'Acropolis, discutant avec Manolis de la gloire de la Grèce Ancienne, l'impact de la civilisation grec sur le monde entier et la situation catastrophique de la Grèce d'aujourd'hui. fâche, une femme aussi, et ils commencent à se disputer avec le jeune homme. Il descend à l'arrêt suivant... Manolis demande au vieux monsieur s'il a besoin de quelque chose mais il ne répond rien. Il se contente de regarder Manolis. La dame et Manolis aident le vieil homme à descendre à l'arrêt suivant et Odysseus voit que Manolis lui donne un peu d'argent. Manolis remonte dans le tain rapidement sans rien dire. En arrivant au port il fait nuit.

La navire va prendre la mer bientôt.

Quelques minutes plus tard ils sont dans leur cabine. Manolis a tout organisé sans demander d'argent à Odysseus. « Vous êtes mon invité et vous ne payerez rien. C'est ce que veut dire l'hospitalité crétoise. » il dit avec un sourire.

Odysseus regarde la mer, en pensant à tout ce qu'il a vécu pendant la journée. Maintenant il mettait le cap vers la partie la plus au sud de l'Europe. Qu'y avait-il d'autre à apprendre ?

Vers Héraklion Le bateau arrive à Héraklion tôt dans la matinée. Un café grec leur ferait du bien, donc ils se dirigent vers la place centrale de la ville, appelée " Les Lions" pour un café et un délicieux " bougatsa ", quelque chose qui ressemble à une tarte à la crème sucrée.

"- Que voulez-vous faire ce matin? Nous sommes chez moi maintenant, vous êtes mon invité et la matinée est à vous.

Nous avons largement le temps d'aller à Iapetra.

- J'aimerais bien visiter le palais Knossos ! Est-ce possible ?

- Mais bien sûr ! Pourquoi pas ? Je ne l'ai pas visité depuis que mes enfants étaient petits."

Knossos n'est pas loin du centre. Ils prennent un taxi. Odysseus regarde les gens. La crise économique touche tout le monde mais ils ont tous l'air heureux, souriant.

Le site archéologique de Knossos est impressionnant. Connu dans le monde entier pour son histoire, le palais se tient devant lui avec son architecture particulière. Odysseus reste devant le fresque avec les dauphins, émerveillé. Il se sent ému, pour une raison inconnue. Le rois Minis vivait ici il y a des milliers d'années et son trône est toujours là.

"- Connaissez-vous le mythe du Minotaur ? demande Manolis.

- Oui. Le labyrinthe est-il ici ?

- Le labyrinthe est dans le sous-sol du palais. Que signifie labyrinthe Odysseus ?"

Odysseus est surpris d'entendre une telle question philosophique à ce moment précis mais peut-être que l'endroit tout autour de lui modifiait les sens, les emmenant loin du commun, de l'ordinaire.

"- Le but du labyrinthe est de nous faire perdre notre sens d'orientation, n'est-ce pas ? Perdre le contact avec la réalité. Estce que ceci nous provoque de l'anxiété ou de la sérénité ? Nous avons peur de l'incertitude et nous cherchons désespérément la sécurité du connu, la sortie vers notre monde réel. C'est comme cela que je le vois. dit Odysseus.

- N'est-ce pas la raison d'être de toute notre vie ?" dit Manolis, regardant la mer au loin.

Ils se trouvent à la sortie du site archéologique, quand le portable de Manolis sonne. Quelle langue étrange est le grec. Manolis parle vite et fort, avec un sourire tout en faisant des gestes.

Alors, Odysseus fait la connaissance du cousin de Manolis, qui s'appelle aussi Manolis ! Ils montent dans la montagne et atteignent un petit village traditionnel. Les maisons traditionnelles, les petites rues pleines des parfums des plantes, la montagne verte au loin... le tout donne à Odysseus un sentiment de sérénité.

Cette après-midi est une révélation pour Odysseus. Un mariage se prépare et les femmes préparent un repas traditionnel. La femme de Manolis apporte des omathies, de la viande bouillie et "du riz du mariage" qui est si délicieux ! Les hommes parlent du mariage, y compris l'oncle de Manolis. Odysseus apprend ce qu'est le "vendetta" crétois, la revanche qui peut suivre des générations et le "proxénio", lorsqu'une femme épouse un homme choisi par son père, ce qui la prive du droit de tomber amoureuse et de choisir son propre époux. - Vous m'invitez dans votre maison ? Mais ... vous ne me connaissez pas !

- Ce serait chouette.

- Préparez-vous à prendre la mer, Odysseus, j'ai une surprise pour vous."

A ce moment-là le téléphone sonne. Lorsque Manolis raccroche il explique.

"- Avant de partir nous devons faire une halte à l'école de ma fille. Il faut que j'y signe un papier.

- D'accord. Mais dîtes-moi, Manolis. Combien d'enfants avezvous ? J'en ai compté 4 jusque-là. Y en a-t-il d'autres ?"

Manolis et Odysseus rient.

En arrivant à l'école, Maria, la fille de Manolis, les attend à l'entrée. C'est une jeune fille souriante d'environ seize ans.

Manolis la suit et Odysseus reste au rez de chaussée, dans la cour. Il s'arrête devant la bibliothèque et regarde par la fenêtre. Il voit une grande affiche sur le mur avec des photos et son nom écrit en grandes lettres "Odysseus". "C'est complètement fou..." pense-t-il.

Quand Manolis revient il lui dit que Maria participe à un projet de collège et que son équipe est invitée en Belgique pour un événement.

- En Belgique? Je suis de la Belgique ! dit Odysseus, encore une fois surpris par une coïncidence.

- Pour l'instant vous êtes à Ierapetra et vous allez visiter une petite île merveilleuse qui s'appelle "Chryssi", l'île dorée, dit Manolis en souriant.

Odysseus n'allait pas le contester.

Une heure et demie plus tard ils atteignent l'île et le bateau en fait le tour. Odysseus n'en croit pas ses yeux. De l'eau vert-bleu, du sable doré, des coquillages merveilleux et aradis. Le propriétaire du bateau leur offre du "raki" (boisson traditionnelle crétoise) et du concombre frais, "ladouristo" (des gâteaux d'orge crétois couverts de tomates et de l'huile d'olive) et du fromage crétois.

Ils arrivent au port d'Ierapetra dans l'après-midi. Odysseus demande quelle est l'histoire du fort à l'entrée du port. Il a été construit au 13ème siècle par les Vénitiens. Le beau temps leur donne envie de se promener dans la vieille ville.

C'est une belle soirée calme, mais soudain Odysseus et Manolis voient deux pakistanais chassés par plusieurs hommes en noir. Manolis et quelques autres locaux mettent fin à l'incident.

Manolis essaie d'expliquer à Odysseus que cela arrive rarement.

Il y a des clandestins dans la région, qui travaillent dans les champs, vivant paisiblement, mais certaines personnes pensent que s'ils leur font peur ou les battent, cela réglera le problème de l'immigration illégale. L'incident perturbe Odysseus et il demande à Manolis de rentrer. Des images de tout ce qu'il a vu pendant ses voyages autour de l'Europe lui viennent à l'esprit. Il a le mal du pays. Il veut retourner à ses racines. Il ressent le besoin de mettre ses pensées et ce qu'il ressent sur papier et il a besoin du calme de sa propre maison. En entrant dans la maison de Manolis il voit un amandier et se rappelle du cerisier que son père a planté dans leur jardin en Belgique. Oui...il est temps de rentrer à la maison.

Le lendemain matin il annonce sa décision à Manolis.

"- D'accord, dit-il, mais promettez-moi que quand ma fille Maria ira à Bruxelles, vous irez la trouver et éventuellement aidera ses professeurs s'ils ont besoin de quelque chose.

Cinquième partie – Retour en Belgique Mai 2034 J’ai ouvert cette boîte, ta boîte, et j’y ai découvert ton histoire, votre histoire.

Je ne savais pas que tant de coincidences vous avaient unis toi et maman.

Je comprend mieux pourquoi tu m’as enseigné que dans la vie rien n’est impossible et qu’il faut toujours voir le bon côté des choses.

Mon plus grand souhait serait que le monde aille mieux, qu’il se relève de cette crise économique et des valeurs. Qu’il grandisse dans l’optimisme comme tu l’as fait papa.

Tu as tout quitté afin de vivre ta merveilleuse aventure sans savoir que ton destin était déjà tracé et que tu devrais vivre ici, près de cette plage qui abrite ces merveilleux coquillages.

He remembered his trip by train, leaving his town in Belgium and his crazy idea to live as an illegal immigrant. He could travel anywhere in the European Union, just with his identity card as a Belgian citizen he was, but he was shocked, so touched by the image of Ahmet! Ahmet was sitting next to him in the train.

They had talked. He was nervous and he got panicked when the ticket collector asked for his papers. The color of his skin had betrayed him... Odysseus saw him descending the train escorted by a policeman. Ahmet looked at him with despair. On the empty seat next to Odysseus, there was laying a book. He felt a presence next to him and he opened his eyes. A man was sitting on the bench. He was smoking, thoughtful. He turned, he looked at him and smiled.

-Kalimera!

Odysseus knew that word. Greek!

-Bonjour!

-French? I don’t speak French! Do you speak English?

-I speak English, yes. Are you Greek?

-Yes, my name is Manolis and I come from Crete!

Manolis offered his hand for a handshake.

-My name is Odysseus and I’m Belgian.

-Odysseus!!! A Greek name! Will you travel on that boat?

-I’m thinking about it. I have no specific destination. You? -I just met my son. He works on that ship. It was a coincidence that I found him here, on my way to Ancona. I’m a truck driver and I transport vegetables from my place to Central Europe.

Now I’m going back to Greece. I’ll take the ferryboat to Patras and then I’ll go to Crete.

-A long trip! I’ve never been to Greece before.

Odysseus explained to Manolis the adventure he had started.

-Come with me then so that you get to know Greece. I’ll be happy to have you as a company during the trip. I don’t like loneliness and you seem to be a nice guy.

So, Odysseus travelled together with Manolis to Ancona and then by boat to Patras, as a common passenger this time. That was when he regretted for leaving his luggage at the train Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

station in Paris. He was missing his books, now during the endless hours on board.

Without second thought he asked Manolis if he had any book with him. He smiled, he opened his backpack and he offered him a book.

-It has your name! Take it!

Odysseus stood there, motionless, speechless, looking at the book and the little heart drawn on the cover. He couldn’t believe his eyes. It was “Odysseus”, the book that Ahmet had left on the train seat...

-How did you get this book?

-Why do you ask? My daughter, Penelope, studies in Paris and she found some books thrown on the floor of the train station in Paris. I met her a few days ago and she gave the books to me, so that I carry them back home. She will return back home in a few weeks and she wanted the books.

-Unbelievable!... Such a coincidence! Where are the other books? They are mine!

Odysseus explained to Manolis what had happened in Paris.

-I have them in the truck. I’ll give them back to you, although Penelope will be sad about it...

Manolis smiled.

In the horizon, they saw Patras harbour.

When they arrived in Patras they didn’t have much time to stay and see the city. Manolis was in a hurry and they just went to Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

have lunch in the center of the town. Odysseus was impressed by the great number of black people that were around the port area. Manolis explained: “All these people are illegal immigrants or refugees that want to go to Italy. They search for the least chance to hide in or under a truck and embark, sometimes with a risk of their life. They don’t want to stay in Greece but they are trapped. Greece is the entrance to Europe for refugees and immigrants from Asia and Africa, due to its geographic position. Even if they manage to leave Greece and reach some other country, European laws will send them back to the country they come from, meaning Greece, so they stay trapped in here. Very sad. They try to survive living in empty train wagons, close to the port, they beg for food or sell illegal cds. Local people are afraid of them and they wouldn’t miss any chance to send them out of the country..

Odysseus remembered his experience in Ravena.

Before leaving Patras, they visited the Cathedral church of Saint Andreas. Manolis, like most of Greek people, is religious and wanted to light a candle for the sake of the soul.

While the truck was leaving the city, Odysseus noticed in the distance the great suspended bridge of Rion-Antirion, a miracle of the modern technology. “So many contradictions in Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

our world”, he thought.... “We focus so much in the material world and we forget to be human... How many people have worked for this bridge? Many of them would have been immigrants, probably mistreated...”

To Athens Odysseus fell asleep in the truck. In two hours they arrived in Athens and Manolis woke him up while he was parking the truck on the dock, close to the ship. There was a strike and the ship would leave at midnight so Manolis suggested that they take the train/subway to the center of Athens. Who knows if Odysseus would have the chance to see Athens again?

First stop: Omonia square. Immigrants everywhere; black people, asian, white, homeless, beggars... Odysseus felt bad. He saw a crippled man begging and he felt lucky he was healthy.

He thought about the vanity of unnecessary wealth, when the only wealth is health.

Next stop: Syntagma square. A solidarity van was distributing goods for homeless and people in need. So there were still people caring for the others, that didn’t mind if they help Greeks or immigrants. There’s still hope in the world...

Time was pressing and he wanted to see Acropolis, at least from a distance.

They walked on the pedestrian road from the metro-station to the entrance of the Acropolis’ archaeological site, talking with Manolis about the glory of the Ancient Greece, the impact of the Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

Greek civilization to the whole world and the bad situation that Greece faces now.

“The ups and downs of history don’t change the smile, the pride and the hospitality of the simple Greek people” said Manolis. “Remember Odysseus! What you watch in the tv news is not what characterizes the whole Greece. Foreigners put labels on Greek people, stereotypes that make me sad because they are not real...”

They took the metro back to the port. An old man was sitting on a seat. He was dirty and he looked not well in his senses. A young man in black entered, he saw him and he started shouting at him and pushing him to get out of the train. Manolis got angry, a woman too and they started arguing with the young man. He got off at the next stop... Manolis asked the old man if he needed anything but he didn’t reply. He was just looking at Manolis. The lady and Manolis helped the old man get off at the next station and Odysseus saw that Manolis gave the old man some money. Manolis got in the train quickly without saying anything.

When they arrived at the port it was dark. The ship would sail soon.

Some minutes later they were in their cabin. Manolis had arranged everything without asking any money from Odysseus.

“You’re my guest and you won’t pay anything. That’s what Cretan hospitality means”, he said smiling.

Odysseus was looking at the sea, thinking of all that he had lived during the day. Now he was heading to the southernmost part of Europe. What was there more to learn?

To Heraklion The ship arrived in Heraklion early in the morning. A greek coffee would do them good, so they headed to the central place of the city, called “The lions” for a coffee and a delicious “bougatsa”, something like a sweet cream pie.

-What do you want us to do this morning. We’re at home now, you’re my guest and the morning is yours. We’ve got plenty of time to go back to Ierapetra.

-I’d like to visit Knossos Palace! Is it possible?

-Of course! Why not? I haven’t visited it since my kids were little.

Knossos is not far away from the center. They took a taxi.

Odysseus was observing the people. The economic crisis was affecting everyone but they all seemed happy, smiling. “We’re crazy people here in Crete”, said Manolis.

The archaeological site of Knossos was impressive. Known world widely for its history, the palace stood there, with its special architecture. Odysseus stayed in awe in front of the fresco with the dolphins. He felt moved, for an unknown reason. King Minos was living here thousands of years ago and his throne was still there.

“Do you know the myth of Minotaur?”, Manolis asked.

-Yes, I do. Is the labyrinth here?

-They say that the labyrinth was in the basement of the Palace.

Odysseus was surprised to listen such a philosophical question at that moment but maybe the whole place around him was driving senses out of the common, of the ordinary.

“The labyrinth aims at making us lose our orientation, right?

Losing contact with reality. Is this causing us anxiety, or serenity? We’re afraid of the uncertainty and we desperately seeking for the safety of the known, the exit to our real world.

That’s how I see it.” Odysseus said.

“Isn’t it what our whole life is about?” Manolis said, looking at the sea in the distance.

There were standing at the exit of the archaeological site, when Manolis’ mobile phone rang. What a strange language Greek is!

Manolis was speaking fast, smiling, with raised voice and making gestures. Odysseus was observing him.

-It was my cousin. He is here in Heraklion and he wants to pick us with his car and go to his village for lunch. No way to refuse!

He will be here in 5 minutes!

-Ok then! It would be interesting to visit a cretan village.

-Cretan people are very friendly, especially in villages and very hospitable.

So, Odysseus met Manolis’s cousin, whose name was Manolis too! They went up in the mountains and reached a small traditional village. The traditional houses, the small streets full of fragrances from the plants, the green mountain in the distance...all in all made Odysseus feel serenity.

That afternoon was a revelation for Odysseus. There was a wedding being prepared and the women were preparing the Odysseus – eTwinning project on Human Rights - 2012-2013

traditional food. The wife of Manolis’ cousin brought some omathies, boiled meat and “the rice of the wedding” that tasted so delicious! Men were talking about the wedding, Manolis’ uncle too. Odysseus learned about the old Cretan “vendetta”, the revenge that could follow generations and the “proxenio”, when a woman was getting married a man that his father had chosen, depriving her of the right to fall in love and chose her husband. Women used to have less rights than men, they stayed at home as housewives and they had to obey the men, as it’s still obvious in some old couples in the villages.

It was late in the afternoon when they left the village. The truck was parked near the port so Manolis’ cousin drove them there.

As they were ready to leave for Ierapetra, Odysseus heard Manolis shouting at someone. There was a man beating his child. Manolis was about to run to him and stop him, but father and child run away. “I can’t stand injustice and violence” Manolis said.

To Ierapetra The trip to Ierapetra was about 1 and a half hours driving.

Odysseus fell asleep.

Manolis was wondering about all the coincidence from the moment he met Odysseus. His Greek name, Ahmet’s book, the books found in Paris by her daughter. And what about this crazy adventure to live like an illegal immigrant! “Something is really important for Odysseus in this story”, he thought.

When Odysseus woke up there was no road in front of him, but a beautiful old house made of stone and a big gate.

- That’s my house Odysseus! Come! You’ll be hungry by now.

My wife will have cooked something for us. I called her while you were sleeping.

- You invite me in your house? But...you don’t know me!

-You’ll get used to it! That’s how we treat our guests! Cretan hospitality, remember?

-Ok then!

The gate opened and a beautiful garden appeared. A child was playing joyfully and a woman was looking after him. The woman approached.

-Welcome!

-This is my wife and my little son.

-Nice to meet you!

Next morning Manolis and Odysseus were having their coffee in the garden. They could see the sea in the distance.

-Today I’ll show you the area, Manolis said. I’ve got no trip in the next few days so I can show you around.

-That would be great.

-Get ready to sail today Odysseus! I’ve got a surprise for you.

At that moment the phone rang. When Manolis hung up he explained.

-Before leaving we must have a stop at my daughter’s school.

They need me to sign a paper.

-ok. But tell me Manolis. How many kids do you have? I counted 4 so far. Are there more?

Manolis and Odysseus laughed.

When they arrived at school, Maria, Manolis’ daughter was waiting for them at the entrance. She was a 16 years old smiling girl. Manolis followed her and Odysseus stayed on the ground floor, walking around the schoolyard. He stopped outside the school library and he looked through the window. He saw a big poster on the wall with photos and his name in big letters “Odysseus”. “This is completely crazy...” he thought.

When Manolis returned he told him that Maria was participating in a school project and her team was invited to Belgium for an event.

-In Belgium? I’m from Belgium! Odysseus said, once more surprised by the coincidence.

-Now you’re in Ierapetra and you’re going to visit a wonderful little island named “Chryssi”, the Golden island, Manolis said smiling.

Odysseus wouldn’t object. In 1 hour and a half they reached the island and the boat made a tour around it. Odysseus couldn’t believe in his eyes.

forest of cedar trees in a landscape that looked like paradise.

The owner of the boat treated them some raki (the traditional cretan drink) and fresh cucumber, “ladouristo� (barley cretan rusks with tomato and olive oil on top) and cretan cheese.

They arrived at the port of Ierapetra in the afternoon. Odysseus asked about the fort that stands at the entrance of the harbour.

It was built in the 13th century by the Venetians.

The fine weather brought them the mood for a walk in the old town. The narrow streets, the smiling faces, the flowers from the balconies and the pots were creating a very friendly atmosphere. In the end of their walk they stopped for a raki and meze in a local tavern close to the fort.

The table was filled with the delicious cretan food. It was a beautiful and calm evening but suddenly Odysseus and Manolis witnessed two men from Pakistan being chased by a few men in black. Manolis and some other local people stopped the incident.

Manolis tried to explain to Odysseus that it rarely happens.

There are illegal immigrants in the area, working in the fields, living peacefully but some people think that scaring them or beating them is a solution to the problem of illegal immigration.

Odysseus felt bad about the incident and asked that they return home. Images of what he had seen so far during his trips around Europe came in his mind. He felt homesick. He wanted to go back to his roots. He felt the need to write down his thoughts and feelings and he needed the calmness of his house. As he entered Manolis’ house, he saw an almond tree and he remembered the cherry tree that his father had planted in their garden back in Belgium. Yes....it was time to go back home.

Next morning he announced his decision to Manolis.

-Ok, he said, but promise me that when my daughter Maria goes to Brussels, you’ll go and find her and maybe help their teachers if they need something.

-I promise, Odysseus said. Now you’re my friend!

-Whenever you’re ready, tell me, and I’ll drive you to Heraklion.

-But there is no need. I can take the bus...

-Don’t say anything. I’ll drive you to Heraklion.

In the afternoon, Manolis wished “a good trip back home” to Odysseus at the airport, giving him a box.

“You will open it when you’re back home, ok?”

-Good bye Manolis.

Thank you for everything. We’ll meet again.

Part 5 - back to Belgium May 2034 I opened that box, your box and I discovered your story.

I didn’t know that so many coincidences had united you and mom.

I understand now better why you have taught me that in life nothing is impossible and that you always see the bright side of things.

My greatest wish is that the world gets better, that it recovers from the economic crisis and the crisis of values, that it grows in optimism, as you did Dad. You left everything to live your wonderful adventure without knowing that your fate was already written and that you would live here, near this beach, home to these wonderful sea shells.

Grandpa Manolis adored those seashells too, especially the spiral ones, resembling to a maze.

For you my father, Odysseus, for you mom Maria, for you grandpa, I wrote down the chances of a lifetime to show that you can always back up the hill and get out of the shadows.

Clio The bell on the door rang.

A client crossed the doorstep.

Clio has a bookstore in Ierapetra called "Z".

In Greek it means "he is alive".
