WELCOME TO THE FIRST OF MANY! As President of Munster Tennis I would like to welcome to you to the first edition of ACE! Tennis in Munster is thriving and it is getting more difficult to keep up to speed with all that is going on, so we have launched ACE, a new and exciting digital magazine to brief Munster clubs, players and supporters on the events and personalities involved in Munster Tennis at all levels.

Providing a valuable platform for the branch, clubs, players and coaches to showcase all that is great about our sport across our Province, ACE is available free to view on our official website at www.MunsterTennis.ie with the hope that we can make this a monthly publication.

You are welcome to download, print and share as you wish, and in time ACE will be the “go to” publication to check what’s on and to publish your own club news and events. www.MunsterTennis.ie

Offering an insight to the services provided to clubs and players by both Munster Tennis & Tennis Ireland, ACE also allows us a great opportunity to recognise the many supporters, volunteers and sponsors behind our sport too.

TOURNAMENT SEASON IS UNDERWAY! At time of the publication of this first issue of ACE, the Winter League finals are at semi-final stage and we are looking forward to a great day in Rushbrooke on the 22nd March for Finals Day.

The closing date for entries is the 20th March.

Schools tennis is ongoing with the Under 14s and Under 16s Championships, and the Primary Schools Championships.

All clubs have been notified that The Branch Annual General Meeting is on the 11th March at The Firgrove Hotel.

ENGAGING ALL CLUBS IN OUR SIX COUNTIES GOING FOR GOLD Carrigaline are aiming for the Gold Level Clubmark and hoping to achieve this accolade in the next month or two.

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS Back in January, we arranged a very successful free taster event with leading wheelchair tennis coach, Mark Bullock from the UK.

The Clubmark aims to ‘identify, develop, accredit and recognise high quality tennis clubs and their contribution to the development of our sport in Ireland’, essentially it lets clubs know they are doing things right.

You can see some photos of this great day elsewhere in this issue.

GREAT PASSION FOR TENNIS IN CASHEL Fabulous to see the passion and enthusiasm continuing to grow with all the players from The Cashel Activity and Training Service taking part in the Enjoy Tennis Ireland programme kindly hosted

by Larkspur Park Cashel.

Led by coach Jaco Oosthuysen, the players are now into their fourth week of brilliant tennis with Enjoy Tennis Development Officer & Munster Tennis’ Regional Development Officer, Liz Clifford, proudly reporting that “the group is progressing really well and are always excited to learn new skills!”

FREE ROLL-OUT SESSIONS IN CORK Liz Clifford ran a very successful wheelchair tennis event in January with visiting leading wheelchair tennis coach, Mark Bullock from the UK. There was a try-out session in the afternoon and a coaches session in the evening, with very positive feedback. We are hoping to have wheelchair tennis available in the coming months.

LOOKING FORWARD TO VISITING MORE CLUBS In this first edition of ACE I detail the structure of the current Junior Programme and recognise the fantastic success of our Junior players at National competitions.

I have held on court sessions with the players, had parents information meetings and met committee members to discuss current and future plans for tennis in Munster.

Plus, I reflect on the provincial events that are taking place in our clubs.

If you would like me to visit your club, or discuss any junior or performance tennis matter, please contact me using the details below.

To continue improving the link between Tennis Ireland and the clubs, the national performance coaching team felt it would be beneficial for if the provincial performance directors visited the clubs as much as possible.

In January, we held our first passport assessment day at Rushbrooke for the Easter tournaments. The passport assessment for the summer tournaments will be in May.

In Munster, I have visited Ballinlough and Tramore tennis clubs and have planned visits for Tralee and Rushbrooke. My thanks to Tramore & Ballinlough for their hospitality.

For further details of the passport assessment, or any Performance matter, you are very welcome to contact me.

For these visits, it is entirely up to the club in what they wish me to offer the young players.

FANTASTIC DAYS AT DONNYBROOK & BISHOPSTOWN The beginning of 2020 saw two of our two senior squads travel to Donnybrook for a matchplay day. Huge thanks to Donnybrook tennis club for hosting us, we look forward to the return fixture!

There was another fantastic day for the Munster Under 12s as they competed in a matchplay at Bishopstown Tennis Club. Huge thanks to Bishopstown for hosting the event and further thanks to Cian Blake, Conor Twomey, Mick Hurley, Dan Moloney and Eric Curry for arranging the day.

A TASTE OF STATESIDE COLLEGE IN COBH!

In January, Mark Finnegan from All Sports Recruitment visited our young aspiring players to speak with them about the US college scholarship system along with a two hour on court session which resembled an American college training session.

Huge thanks to Mark, Cian Blake and Garrett Barry for making the day happen and thanks as always to Rushbrooke for the use of their fantastic facilities.

COMING TOGETHER TO IMPROVE ALL AREAS

Back in August 2019 Munster Performance Director, Cian Blake and National Performance Co-ordinator, Garrett Barry, held a coaches workshop in Fota Island Resort.

The aim of the workshop was to get as many coaches together to discuss all things tennis in Munster and to start working together to enable Munster tennis to further improve in the future. Almost 40 coaches from all corners of the province were present on the night.

It was decided on the night that a sub committee of coaches was to be set up to further improve links between the coaches, clubs and Munster branch. The committee was open to all coaches that were present on the night or any coach that was interested.

The following coaches put their names forward and the new Munster coaches sub-committee was formed: • • • • •

ALL CHANGE FOR THE VETERANS / SENIORS To align with the ITF Events and Irish Teams, for 2020 there are now three Interprovincial Championships at Veterans (Seniors) level instead of the previous two.

As a result, Munster Branch Veterans (Seniors) Committee will also move to this model in 2020 and all Munster Seniors Teams for 2021 will be selected after the last event of the 2020 season.

The Munster Branch Seniors Committee will utilise the normal points system to select the Team after the South East of Ireland Veterans at Waterford for the Young Seniors Interprovincial Championships (over 35, 40 & 45) which takes place in May.

These teams will be selected based only on results in 2020.

The remaining two teams will be selected around the 20th of March 2020.

This is a significant change to previous years for some players where selection took place in June.

Tennis Ireland is moving towards selecting National teams at the end of each Calendar Year based on the results of that year only.

Therefore, we encourage all players to participate in as many tournaments are possible to give them their best chance of making the relevant Munster team based on their best 4 results in 2020.
