How real time raytracing is revolutionizing computer graphics Sponsored by: FX ANIMATION En el último GDC, Epic Games lanzó un cortometraje titulado Reflections realizado en colaboración con NVIDIA e ILMxLAB. Este cortometraje muestra la tecnología de raytracing en tiempo real que Epic ha desarrollado durante los últimos años, y desde el primer día se percibió como un momento decisivo para la industria del cine y la televisión, señalando que el fotorealismo en tiempo real está a la vuelta de la esquina.

En esta charla, Juan Cañada explicará cómo se hizo el cortometraje, cuáles fueron los principales desafíos y cómo se enfrentaron. También explicará cómo el raytracing en tiempo real tendrá un impacto en el futuro de la creación de contenido digital y cuáles son las barreras que se deben superar a partir de ahora.

In the last GDC Epic Games released a short movie called Reflections made in collaboration with NVIDIA and ILMxLAB. This movie shows the real time ray tracing technology Epic has developed during the last years, and from the first day it was perceived as a watershed moment for the film and tv industry, that points out photorealism in real time is just around the corner.

In this talk Juan Cañada will explain how the movie was done, what were the main challenges and how they were faced. He will also explain how real time ray tracing will impact the future of digital content creation and what are the barriers that should be broken next.

Nacho Thomas Tejedor will present the work developed by the Double Negative team for the Pacific Rim: Uprising environments. This film has been without any doubt one of the biggest challenges to date for the company, which in a single year had to make 1,500 shots of great complexity with creatures and robots fighting for different cities.

También nos acercará el trabajo de generalista en las producciones de VFX. Un recorrido por el día a día y los retos que se presentan en una producción, y cuáles son las mejores armas de las que disponer para este trabajo.

We will also approach the work of a generalist in the VFX productions. A journey through the day to day and the challenges that arise in a production, and which are the best weapons available for this work.

A la vez que muestra ejemplos de producciones recientes de Felix & Paul Studios, Sebastian explorará los desafíos y las complejidades que la narración de historias en un nuevo medio pone sobre la mesa. Si bien se puede pensar en las experiencias inmersivas como una extensión del cine, la mayoría de las reglas del juego cambian cuando estás inmerso en la historia y necesitas que te replanteen lo que son efectivamente los nuevos media. Todo, desde la eliminación de lo que no es totalmente convincente al procesado de imágenes y las cámaras CG se revisan bajo un prisma de aprendizaje y desaprendizaje de las reglas y esto es lo que hace que los medios inmersivos sean tan emocionantes.

This talk will focus on the nascent field of narratives in immersive environments.

While providing examples from recent Felix & Paul Studios productions, Sebastian will explore the challenges and complexities that telling stories in a new medium brings to the table. While you could think of immersive experiences as an extension of cinema, most of the rules of the game change when you are immersed in the story and need to be re-thought for what are effectively brand-new media. Everything from suspension of disbelief to image processing and CG cameras is cast under a new light and the learning and unlearning of the rules is what makes immersive media exciting.

Wonder Park, the great bet of Paramount Animation, produced from Ilion Animation Studios, will be present in Mundos Digitales.

The creative team of Ilion will analyse in depth the artistic challenges they have faced for the development of the film, where originality and experimentation have been present throughout the production.

Javier Abad, animation director, Javier Romero, VFX supervisor and Juan García, layout supervisor, will show us how they have had to deal and make realism fit in lighting and cinematography, with stylization marked by design and animation.

Conocer a fondo todas las fases de la producción, dominar el software y técnicas necesarias es clave para que un pequeño equipo formado por 2 o 3 personas pueda enfrentarse a un reto de estas características, de forma que se maximice la productividad desde la preproducción hasta la entrega final.

Knowing thoroughly all the phases of the production, mastering the software and necessary techniques is key so that a small team of 2 or 3 people can face a challenge of these characteristics, so that the productivity is maximized from the preproduction to the final delivery.

Mostraremos cómo en el equipo de FX nos adaptamos a los diferentes tipos de proyectos (cine, series, publicidad...) y cómo ajustamos las herramientas y los recursos en función de las necesidades de cada producción. Lo veremos con casos prácticos de algunas de las últimas producciones en las que hemos trabajado.

We will show how in the FX team we adapt to the different types of projects (cinema, series, advertising...) and how we adjust the tools and resources according to the needs of each production. We will see it with practical cases of some of the last productions in which we have worked.

During my years of experience as an instructor I have learned to analyse the environment that surrounds us and to go further in the analysis of everyday situations and be able to put them into practice in my classes.

Analysis of how we react to an adversity or the encounter with new places makes our communication mechanisms and emotions change. Elements such as the look can reveal these emotions.

I will share my conclusions and how to put them into practice in projects.

De la novela gráfica a la pequeña pantalla From graphic novel to the small screen Happy! relata la experiencia del alcohólico ex policía convertido en asesino Nick Sax, que se une al unicornio imaginario Happy para encontrar a una joven secuestrada por un desquiciado Papá Noel. Únete a Ross y a José mientras nos cuentan detalles sobre el proceso de convertir la novela gráfica del escritor escocés Grant Morrison en un personaje 3D creíble. Desarrollo de conceptos, animación y render final, aseguran que Happy, a pesar de su apariencia de caricatura, parezca una adición fotorrealista y creíble al mundo del espectáculo.

Happy! recounts the experience of alcoholic ex-cop turned hitman Nick Sax who teams up with imaginary unicorn Happy to find a young girl kidnapped by a deranged Santa Claus.

Join Ross and Jose as they talk through the process of translating the graphic novel by Scottish writer Grant Morrison into a believable 3D character. Developing concepts, animation and final rendering, ensuring that Happy, despite his cartoonish appearance, felt like a photoreal and believable addition to the show’s world.

Successes and challenges Gracias a la evolución de las telecomunicaciones, las empresas pueden contar con el talento adecuado en cualquier ubicación de forma sencilla y eficiente. Passion Pictures, tradicionalmente radicada en Londres, abrió en verano de 2017 una nueva oficina en Barcelona.

En esta charla explicaremos cuales han sido las motivaciones de Passion para tomar esta decisión y detallaremos tanto las buenas prácticas como las áreas de mejora que hemos identificado en el proceso. Para ello tomaremos como referencia la ejecución de dos proyectos que caracterizan especialmente los pormenores de la colaboración a distancia: Intuit y Joy & Heron.

Due to the developments in the telecommunications sector, companies are able to access the right talent from any location easily and efficiently. Passion Pictures, established in London in 1987, opened a new office in Barcelona in the summer of 2017.

In this presentation we will explain what motivated Passion to open another office and we will outline what we did successfully during the execution of our projects as well as the areas we identified as needing improvement. In order to do this, we will use as a reference two projects where team work between the offices was essential: Intuit and Joy & Heron.

Uno de los mayores desafíos fue desarrollar una estructura y flujo de trabajo que satisficiera las necesidades de la historia y fuera coherente con los recursos de todos los estudios que la coproducían.

Another Day of Life is a hybrid feature film created in six studios around Europe. One of the biggest challenges was to develop structure and workflow that meets booth needs of the story and resources of the coproduction companies.

El estilo gráfico del proyecto se basa en el lenguaje visual del cómic tradicional combinado con la animación 3D moderna basada en la actuación del actor. La presentación tratará tanto de los pasos que se dieron en la producción de la película como en otros ejemplos de obras de Platige que influyeron en la apariencia y el flujo de trabajo de Another Day of Life.

Graphical style of the project is based on traditional comic book visual language combined with modern 3D animation based on actor performance. Presentation will be based both on production steps of the movie and various other examples of Platige works that influenced Another Day of Life look and workflow.

Esta producción reproduce aquel encuentro a través de diferentes técnicas de animación: 2D, 3D y stop motion.

Un proyecto colaborativo realizado de principio a fin en España, en el que Illusorium ha sido el encargado, junto con el equipo 3D2D Frente, de recrear la escena.

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the launching of the film, TCM premieres 2001 Sparks in the dark, a 20-minute film that recreates the interview with Kubrick that Playboy magazine published in its September 1968 issue and that has become essential when it comes to approaching the reflections and theories that led the director to shoot 2001.

This production reconstructs that encounter through different animation techniques: 2D, 3D and stop motion. A collaborative project carried out from beginning to end in Spain, in which Illusorium has been responsible, together with the 3D2D Frente team, to recreate the scene.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe, a leading company in audiovisual entertainment, and PrimerFrame, school of animation and videogames, have reached a collaboration agreement for the development of several animated shorts based on IPs and licenses belonging to Bandai Namco. In this way, students can discover the challenges involved in working on a project with requirements and deadlines of a real customer.

In this lecture, both companies will explain us the details of this agreement, how they face to produce animation from international IPs and the process of creating a short film of this magnitude. In addition, they will present the first short film fruit of the agreement between both companies.

Lifetime, a love story in which the famous Pac-Man will play a key role, is the first of a series of short films to be presented internationally.

Pero tiene éxito.

Y es inesperado porque hasta ahora el propio sector utiliza unos protocolos de desarrollo extraordinariamente alejados de las tres tecnologías mencionadas: BIM, videojuegos, realidad virtual. Ninguno tiene nada que ver con el sector, que ya funciona correctamente con sus métodos.

Pero esos métodos ni dan agilidad, ni dan precisión, ni ofrecen datos como valor añadido, ni mucho menos alcanzan el nivel estelar en las presentaciones que el tiempo real y la realidad virtual pueden dar. Por eso esta convergencia inusual ha dado como resultado un caso de éxito, que se está repitiendo en muchos otros sectores.

Multinational General Manager wearing a virtual reality glasses going through hospital facilities, planned using the BIM methodology and brought to real time through a video game engine is unexpected. But it is successful.

And it is unexpected because until now the sector itself uses extraordinary development protocols away from the three mentioned technologies: BIM, Videogames, Virtual Reality. None has anything to do with the sector, which already works correctly with its methods.

But these methods neither give agility, nor give precision, nor offer data as added value, nor reach us to a stellar level in the presentations that real time and virtual reality can give. That is why this unusual convergence has resulted in a success story, which is being repeated in many other sectors.
