Times have certainly changed when it comes to providing guest room entertainment. Thanks to Millennials, and now Gen Z or Zoomers, accessing entertainment in accommodations this decade will be a very different experience. The days when a guest room was just a place to sleep, take a shower, pop the clock radio on, or watch a bit of local news on TV are long gone for many. High-quality, high-tech in-room entertainment systems have become very much the order of the day, year and indeed decade! Savvy operators know that access to high-tech inroom entertainment not only in the guest room but across the whole property, is at the

top of the list for many of their guests. Having the technology to allow guests to view their own content and access their own apps at the touch of a button or swipe of a thumb is now a priority. Planning and preparing for future technological advances is wise. Many guests undoubtably still look forward to accessing the premium content provided through a hotel system. They seek and expect to be able to watch their favourite live sporting events, 24-hour news and high-definition movies – the type of high-quality content that can be easily provided through satellite broadcast. Never doubt that your choice of guest entertainment systems will make the difference between winning a booking or losing it because many of your potential guests do their

homework. They make in-room entertainment a key factor in their decision to stay at certain properties based on what’s on offer. Therefore, your decision has repercussions. This is why Accom News consulted an array of industry experts in the field so that you can figure out the best guest entertainment solutions for your property. Scott Wiedemann the National Manager for Accommodation at Foxtel believes that due to the pandemic guests now rely on premium television content more than ever. While many guests expect integrated streaming apps and casting capabilities, he suggests many still simply want to watch premium content provided through the hotel system. He reveals: “Live sport remains

the most sought-after content, but not every guest has multiple subscriptions to watch the sport they want. Guests are always thrilled when popular sport and entertainment channels are made available to them on their guest room television.” Scott points out that technology changes rapidly and it can be costly to keep up. enhance your guest’s stay as a platform for information and an opportunity to upsell hotel services alongside acting as an online booking service.”

Satellite broadcast remains a dependable delivery option for high quality content

“Look for entertainment solutions that can evolve, make a one-time investment in technology that’s continuously updated in-line with changes in media consumption and user behaviour.” He cautions: “All new televisions have 4K/Ultra HD capability and high-definition content is highly desired, but this can put a strain on your bandwidth therefore satellite broadcast remains a dependable delivery option for high quality content.” He agrees that viewing habits can vary between different demographics, therefore “it’s vital to cater to all guest types and provide live TV, Video on Demand or casting”. He says: “Leisure guests love a www.accomnews.com.au

more relaxed environment to watch a movie or sport, while corporate travellers like to watch the latest news. Older generations are more likely to watch regular TV programming, while the younger generation mainly watch linear TV when there are live events, such as sport, concerts or awards ceremonies, so they can interact in real-time on social media to air their thoughts.” To remain competitive, Scott advises to replicate a home environment. “A ‘home away from home’ experience needs to be better, or at least the same, as guests have in their own house,” he says. “A TV is more than just entertainment; it can also

On the future, he predicts: “Hospitality TVs will evolve and become an information and interaction hub for guests accustomed to COVID-safe practices. Guests will be able to access their bill, view digital concierge information as well as interact with accommodation services via the screen, and they can expect an even more seamless experience as voice activation is introduced.” Guest entertainment is now much more than just providing televisions in guest rooms. Travis Anderson, VP Hospitality from the Ci Group talks to us about the value of digital signage. He reveals that the pandemic changed the AV and display industry by creating yet another application for display that enabled a range of vital safety measures to protect and reassure guests. He says: “Digital signage is a great way to communicate information to guests, it is immediate and contactless,

therefore perfect for issuing ever-changing COVID instructions.” However, digital signage is not just about issuing safety instructions. Travis explains: “Accommodation managers can be more creative and innovative than they realise when using digital signage. For a start they don’t have to be limited to LCD screens, they can use LED displays of various dimensions and proportions, or perhaps even projection, which can work brilliantly in a garden area. Nor is the content limited to what is photo realistic and with the right creative you can create striking visual impact on a modest budget. AccomNews - Summer 2022

“Even with conventional LCD digital signage monitors there is plenty of scope for creativity in the content. Digital art can engage clients and give them something to look at in between the on-screen promotion of hotel services and local tourist attractions. Memes, on the other hand, can entertain them with something fresh every day. "The key to it all is ease of image creation and scheduling.” Travis offers tips on what to look for when choosing signage for specific areas of the accommodation. “Certain areas are best served with display devices that can be powered over the ethernet. This makes cabling more economical and reduces installation costs. Screens in lifts are a good example,” he says.

“Screens in areas with a lot of daylight should be high brightness monitors or they will look dull. Digital signage attracts far less attention when it is dull. Brightness is your friend.” He adds: “If the location for an LED screen is easily accessible, you can afford to go for a cheaper screen because pixel replacement is easier. Generally, the cheaper the LED screen, the more frequent the need for upkeep.” Miguel Mendoza, Country Manager, ANZ at Exterity, a VITEC company, reveals that providing personalised experiences for hotel guests is more crucial than ever. Due to the COVID pandemic he explains: “Travellers inevitably have much more anxiety, but by providing the

information and services without venturing beyond their door, minimising physical contact with hotel staff. “The modern hotel room IPTV system can also display personalised safety messages to guests, including updates on social distancing, mask requirements and other local guidelines or rules,” he says. right technologies you can help your guests feel more in control and less exposed.” He suggests that “in-room infotainment systems can empower guests to do more from the comfort of their room amid ongoing concerns”. Today’s IP-based systems allow guests to access hotel

“In addition, targeted messages on personal safety can extend to all public areas of a hotel through digital signage. Also, in lieu of touch screens, QR codes have made a comeback, enabling guests to access information about hotel services from digital signage using their personal device.” On current trends he says: “An increase in personalisation is key and should be centred

Integration with hotel databases enables personalisation of guest room television ensuring a unique, fully customised experience. Personalisation also provides hotels with greater upselling opportunities through revenue-driving dynamic adverts and content via the

in-room TV and mobile apps.” Beyond the guest room, he explains that due to having personalised information on your booking system you can provide your returning guests with a more “personal touch to make them feel very special”. He advises: “You now have an opportunity for a fresh start, after more than a year of lockdowns, to differentiate your accommodation by offering a customised experience

through digital innovations. Therefore, provide technologies that offer guests a premium experience to make them feel welcome, safe and at ease. By extending the experience from the initial booking process through the complete guest journey to arrival, check-in, during their stay, and even after they leave, you will establish and maintain strong guest loyalty. But remember, today’s tech-savvy travellers also

Heinrich Saayman, CEO & Founder of HoneyBadger Technologies has a positive outlook for 2022. “Guest's expectations have changed considerably over the past two years and their viewing habits adapted during lockdowns to keep themselves entertained. This includes signing up to additional subscriptions for streaming services, we stream what we love to watch, or watch catch-up TV for the shows we missed.”

In his opinion, “guests want to securely consume their own content on the big screen in the guest room. They also will consume any free content available where the hotel may be paying subscription fees”.

on investment’ is: Do guests still pay for movies during their stay? What do your guests watch at home? Does your accommodation need to pay fees for content that your guests may not even consume?”

He agrees trends can change depending on the demographic of your guests but suggests: “The playing field is leveling out and the gap between generational consumers is decreasing.

He says: It’s a hard choice to make as every person is different and you can no longer assume what guests watch. However, you should be providing a stable, certified casting solution that allows your guests to connect securely without providing any personal details. Casting is the top of most guest’s request list. Keep your choice simple, provide the platform that allows guests to choose their own content.”

“Now we all use the same platforms; we just stream different content. The older generation used to consume a lot of traditional television, whereas now the younger generation stream content directly from their mobile device, even the ‘grey nomads’, business travellers and families all travel now with their chosen content on their devices. All generations now stream and use the OTT Apps like Netflix, STAN, Disney+, AMAZON, ABC and SBS to deliver our content. There are now over 2100 apps streaming, including radio from anywhere in the world.”

He asks: “When updating your accommodation entertainment technologies, a key point to consider is what the ‘return

If you are on a small budget, he suggests: “Casting is king because the investment is relatively low. Operators who have installed casting are already seeing payback in less than 12 months. However, you must ensure a strong and stable wifi network to provide good quality casting solutions.” For the luxury market he advises: “Research your guest’s preferences and personalise your offering as per brand expectation with casting, digital compendiums and much more”.

Finally, on the future Heinrich says: “There has been a revolution and content consumption demand has grown; the suppliers of content platforms have expanded due to revenue streams that did not exist just five years ago. Consumers love the ‘block buster’ choice of content, they are willing to pay for it and take it with them travelling. They have been freed from consuming the guest room entertainment that was once chosen for them.” He adds: “Guests can choose their own pillow and bed firmness, so why not their own content on the TV?” Regan Baynes, Client Success Manager from Lifestylepanel is of the opinion that in-room entertainment goes hand in hand with lifestyle trends because guests expect a similar experience to their ‘at home’ technology. He says: “During the pandemic, the wider community became even more connected to their personal devices and streaming content. Guests are paying subscription fees for their content and want to be able to utilise their streaming services while away from home.” Consolidation of products and vendors is the current trend.

Regan Baynes, Client Success Manager, Lifestylepanel

He explains: “With the current climate, operators need to look for solutions that will provide greater value, this includes delivery of lower operating costs with consolidation, reducing demands on staff resources agile to market changes. “Guests are now able to access a wide array of apps from their personal devices and have their own subscriptions that they use on a regular basis. We continue to see large growth on the number of devices being connected, the number of hours being streamed, and new apps being used across our casting platforms.” He observes: “The younger generation are very tech savvy with their own devices and personal preferences regarding content. However, with the requirement of QR code check-in and digital vaccination

certificates across the whole community due to COVID protocols, the older generation are quickly becoming more familiar with their personal devices and apps.” For casting, he advises that for all accommodations regardless of size, it is critical to have a secure, solid foundation for network communications that will allow agile and seamless integration with new add-ons. He says: “For those on a small budget having a secure,

qualified cabling network doesn’t necessarily mean you need to strip the infrastructure and start again. An MATV network can also provide a solid foundation for network communications for those operators not in a position to re-cable fibre or data throughout their building.” His biggest tips? “Consult an experienced industry vendor to discuss the individual needs of the business, particularly regarding products that empower the guest.

entertainment and information services you provide, on their own personal devices. Guests do not want to be just tied to their guest room, instead they want to access entertainment anywhere on the property and this trend can also open up new revenue opportunities for you.”

“Keep it simple and relevant to the local experience. A specialised hospitality platform is recommended as it will provide a consistent experience for both guests and staff and provide flexibility as requirements change in the future.”

Greg confirms: “Providing simple connectivity and fast internet speeds will create an amazing online experience, and this is the key to guest satisfaction.”

Greg Bassine, CEO of Streamvision observes that since the pandemic there has been an evolution in the methods used to entertain and inform guests. He says: “Operators introduced touchless interaction to not only protect guests, but also provide them with a level of comfort during their stay. “Now guests expect options for touchless control of entertainment and information options. Technology such as soft remotes on the guest's own devices allows them to feel comfortable in the knowledge they are limiting their risks with possible infectious interactions with in-room devices.” On current trends he reveals: “Advancements in streaming technology means more guests want to display their own subscription content in their own guest room and accommodations must focus on providing the entertainment capabilities guests expect.”

Furthermore, he says: “Guests not only want to access content they bring with them, but they also want to consume GUIDE TO GUEST ENTERTAINMENT

He also suggests that working with industry providers who have multiple technology and entertainment capabilities will ensure better guest entertainment experiences. “There are so many inexpensive technology systems available, but understanding which options truly represent the best value, highest reliability and maximum financial return requires in-depth industry knowledge. Your top priority should be fast and reliable wifi and casting capabilities,” he says. “If you turn negative guest reviews and complaints about poor wifi into positive reviews, it will positively impact your future revenue. “Create an atmosphere of ‘technology luxury’, no matter your property’s size or budget. Give your guests the ultimate luxury experience by allowing them to watch their own content on high quality television panels, with sound bars, wireless speakers, and provide multi-room listening alongside portable technology.” For those accommodations on a small budget, he recommends: “Don’t over invest in technologies that do not represent a good financial return. A smart operator will work with industry suppliers who can assist them to select inexpensive, simple, easy to use, easy to manage and reliable technologies.” On the future, he adds: “The inclusion of newer technologies such as voice assistants, casting and screen mirroring capabilities as well as integrated entertainment solutions means less equipment in the room, and a better guest experience.” www.accomnews.com.au

The future of in-room entertainment Over the past couple of years, with the pandemic and enforced lockdowns keeping people at home, there has been a shift towards households improving their home entertainment. People have now become accustomed to large HD or 4K screens, surround sound and multiple streaming subscriptions. In fact, according to Deloite’s Media Consumer Survey 2021, 80% of the 2,000+ consumers surveyed had a paid digital entertainment subscription of some sort. As such, when people stay at a hotel, they expect to be able to access the same high standard of entertainment they can get at home. The hotel entertainment system isn’t the sole reason a person will book a hotel, but television is so ingrained into the fabric of our every day, that guests will increasingly feel something is missing if the technology in their hotel room isn’t up to scratch. And getting the in-room entertainment right can open up new markets, encourage guests to keep coming back and set a hotel apart from its competitors. So what entertainment options are available for hoteliers? There are several individual solutions – on demand libraries, casting devices or live TV. On demand libraries in the past have been an additional source of revenue for hotels but often guests are unwilling to pay for extras like this, especially if they feel they’ve already paid a premium for the room itself.

Consumer Survey 2021, show that the younger generations are watching more hours of streamed content (whether paid or free) per week than any other form of TV entertainment but this percentage gets lower with each generation: •

Gen Z (14–24-year-olds) watch 22.5 hours of streaming video services per week (66% of their total TV viewing)

Millenials (25–38-year-olds) watch 18 hours of streaming video services per week (56% of their total TV viewing)

Gen X (39–55-year-olds) watch 12.5 hours of streaming video services per week (43% of their total TV viewing)

Boomers (56–75-year-olds) watch 9 hours of streaming video services per week (28% of their total TV viewing)

Matures (75+) watch 5.5 hours of streaming video services per week (19% of their total TV viewing)

This research highlights that there is still a reluctance and/ or lack of knowledge on how to cast/stream with a large portion of the population. So, to just provide guests the ability to access their own streaming service isn’t accommodating the preference of guests over the age of 39-years-old who prefer to watch live TV. Instead, guests have the expectation that quality linear content should be provided alongside free-to-view on-demand TV shows and movies, and the ability to cast their own apps. This is where a product like the Foxtel Business iQ comes into its own. It offers over 90 live channels of premium movies, sport, entertainment, factuals, news and music but also provides guests

AccomNews - Summer 2022

In addition to being an all-in-one entertainment solution, the Foxtel Business iQ acts as an information hub that can help guests get the most out of their stay and enable hoteliers to promote their facilities and services. Guests can access their hotel bill, view digital concierge information and interact with hotel services such as restaurants and spa facilities all via the screen. The guest messaging feature enables the hotelier to send a message directly to an individual’s screen or a group of guests, ensuring they never miss out on happy hour at the lobby bar or the latest offer at the spa. The platform also allows the addition of the hotel’s own content such as welcome videos or external content channels. The unique benefit of the Business iQ is that it’s constantly evolving, whether that’s the content available on the platform or the technology that is remotely updated. Over 5000 new TV shows and movies are added each month, and technology updates are released throughout the year. With the Business iQ, Foxtel can evolve the product based on technology trends as well as changes in media consumption and user behaviour, providing a truly futureproof allround solution for hoteliers.

Casting devices are the cheapest option, but they don’t have the widest appeal. There’s a common misconception that everyone now streams their entertainment and so a casting device or on demand library on its own will suffice. But research suggests this is overlooking a large proportion of the population. The findings in Deloite’s Media

the option to watch free-to-view content on-demand, as well as the choice to cast their own streaming services. Having the choice of how to watch entertainment ensures that the preferences of all guests are catered for.

Australia’s first choice for a long-term partnership As the industry prepares for 2022, the in-room guest technology your hotel decides to implement today will have a far-reaching impact on the future of your business, so choosing wisely is essential. The technology you choose needs to deliver not only scalability, speed and powerful features – it also has to support all aspects of service delivery to ensure world-class service. When considering the adoption of a new in-room guest technology platform aimed at empowering excellent guest service, we recommend hoteliers consider the following: •

Is the platform fully customisable and future proof? Does the platform adapt to your property’s unique business needs?

Is it cost-effective?

Is it available from anywhere, on any device, at any time? Mobile access is absolutely key.

Does the service offer 100% support – guaranteed to be available 100% of the time?

Does it offer real-time, automatic revenue optimization? Can the applications work together as a cohesive technology “stack” that creates a seamless, “allin-one” ecosystem? Does the system offer enhanced, “hands-off ” stability and ease of use to ensure staff members do not need to focus on the technology but instead focus on your guest?

HoneyBadger Technologies can provide your hotel with a safer environment and more efficient operations using our intelligent technology, both in the room and on the go.

Leaders in the industry Well, what a challenging year 2021 was. The hospitality industry like many others faced their fair share of challenges. Throughout the year, Streamvision worked with partners through constantly changing restrictions, hotels closing through lockdowns and re-opening and the general feeling of uncertainty that the whole industry felt. While we started the year off in lockdown, gradually properties were able to re-open and while this presented a range of new challenges for us to face, it also forced new and innovative ways of dealing with them. At Streamvision, we couldn’t help but be amazed to watch partners from around the world come together through their love for this industry to support one another. From financial relief to labour and moral support, the hospitality community pulled together and saw through the worst of the pandemic. While this pandemic left many businesses struggling behind a mess of debt and lost profit it also provided many businesses the opportunity to pivot. Many took the time to rethink how they did business, to question practises that may now be out-dated and how in the future they can be better prepared. Early in 2021, Streamvision was one of those businesses asking questions, which resulted in our company changing forever. Through the financial relief we were providing at the time, we realised that the operating costs for Guest Entertainment Technology such as IPTV, Casting, WIFI and Digital Signage were too high. While these new technologies, which are now deemed essential for operators to maintain a competitive edge, are exciting and innovative, they have left hotels with additional costs, confusion around best use policies and a general feeling of being too complex.

Greg Bassine, CEO, Streamvision

At Streamvision, we battled with this question throughout the first quarter of 2021. We looked at our business model, our customers and the entire hospitality industry and asked ourselves, could we do it better. The answer was we could, we reimagined our business with a greater focus on delivering a better return for our clients, which we hoped would help solve many of their problems. This resulted in a new subscription-based model for all our technologies. This breaks the pattern hotels are in when introducing a new technology; spend a considerable amount of time finding a partner, investing capital and then spending more in monthly operating costs. With each new technology, the same process is followed and the costs start to add up. With CLUBstreamvision, the venue simply subscribes to our membership program for a

period of 36 months. During that time, they can implement any of the technologies we provide, including IPTV/MATV On-screen Compendium, Casting from Apple and Android Devices, HSIA Gateway and Guest Network Management, Digital Signage, Tablet Software, F&B Ordering and more. While subscribed, a venue has full, unrestricted access to all of these technologies, the only cost they cover is that of the hardware required to run them and the cost to install them. As venues don’t need to buy the technologies, there’s no licensing costs which further helps to reduce the capital expenditure, around 30%-40% in total. Throughout the period of their subscription venues have access to excellent support, which is covered at a flat rate of $5.00 ex GST per room per month, regardless of the

number of solutions a venue utilises. In a time when juggling the on-going financial impact on your business and improving the experience of your guest are critical for a speedy recovery, CLUBstreamvision just makes sense. Throughout 2021, we were fortunate to engage with many new partners joining the CLUBstreamvision subscription and to see the benefits of the service felt immediately. It’s refreshing to know an initiative you strongly believed and have worked towards has impacted so many. As we continue along this road of recovery, I urge other suppliers to take the same approach Streamvision has and to understand for the whole industry to make a full recovery we need everyone to work together.

With each new technology that comes along so does additional costs in capital and operating costs, each one eating into the profitability and sustainability of the venue. Where does it end? At what point does the cost outweigh the benefit the new emerging technology provides and can we do anything about it?

THE Ci GROUP

The Ci Group The Ci Group brings to the hotel industry a fresh set of capabilities applicable to guest entertainment. Guest room technology has now evolved to the point where no single manufacturer can offer all the answers. You need to combine the best options for each aspect into one coherent system for which a single company can be held responsible. In order to exceed guest expectations today, hotels need to combine a variety of technologies, and that’s where the Ci Group comes into its own.

Integrating best of breed entertainment elements such as IPTV, casting platforms, new release movies, the guest room televisions and more. This integrative advantage does not stop at hotel rooms. It applies throughout your entire hotel; bars, restaurants, gymnasiums, lobbies, outdoor areas, event spaces, business centres and corridors. Adopting this approach also means your hospitality technology is provided in a form that’s more readily held accountable. www.thecigroup.com.au
