ART IS EVERYWHERE Once again 'Art is Everywhere' in the Margaret River Region with Open Studios 2019. For 16 days we celebrate the vibrancy, originality, quality and diversity of artists in the region. More than 100 artists, including 24 new to the event, will open their studios and be ready to greet you.

Meeting artists gives visitors a great opportunity to ‘sticky beak’ into often out-of-the-way private spaces, and there’s much to enjoy discovering the particular creative intentions and techniques of individual artists. It’s a chance to share ideas, admire art and maybe even own a piece.

Last year visitors gave a terrific thumbs up to our big new event guide which we have improved again this year with new-look maps and a dedicated Dunsborough and Surrounds map.

I know you will join me in thanking the Department of Local Government, Sport and Creative Industries for returning as platinum sponsors, plus a big thanks goes to all our other sponsors, advertisers, volunteers and board members, as without you the event would simply not be possible.

The scheme was devised as a way for the Government to support smaller and emerging events in regional Western Australia to boost tourism, increase community vibrancy and participation, and develop regional areas.

The Regional Events Scheme plays an important role in positioning Western Australia as an exciting destination to visit and a great place to live by showcasing and promoting a region’s unique and diverse attractions.

Sixty-nine diverse regional events across Western Australia have been funded through the 2018-19 Regional Events Scheme. This year’s round includes the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme with a funding pool of $150,000 exclusively allocated to events delivering Aboriginal activities and experiences.

Tourism is a key pillar of the McGowan Government’s plan to diversify the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities, especially in regional Western Australia.

To achieve this we have a two-year action plan in place to help us attract more visitors to Western Australia, encourage them to stay longer, disperse further and do more while they are here.

We hope everyone enjoys the event and takes the time to explore the Margaret River region.

Plan your day - See more art by focusing on a smaller area at a time.

Once you have decided what you like the look of, check out selected Artists listing on our website - you’ll see more images of their work and also see any detailed instructions about how best to find them.

Pack some snacks, maybe a thermos and take your time, there are loads of great properties to discover as you explore. Don’t rush. If time is short at the end of the day - ring ahead and let an artist know you are on your way. Please

always respect opening and closing times.

Decide who you will visit Flick through this Guide and identify which artists you like the look of. Mark these studios and refer to the map to plan your journey. For additional information and more images, refer to the artist profile on our website.

Plan your trip We cover a large area so planning ahead is essential. Use Sat Nav or Google Maps to locate studios and for ‘hard to find’ locations check our website or call the artist. Then plan a route to follow.

Be a great visitor Be respectful and thank the artist for opening their space for the event. Supervise your children and keep them with you while you visit. Always contact the artist first if you would like to bring a dog onto their property.

What to ask an Artist?

Our artists welcome your interest in their work. Below are some great conversation starters. Art News published a guide on “How to talk to an Artist’ you can find it at: www.artnews.com/2005/06/01/how-to-talk-to-an-artist.

What is their process? – How do they make their work?

What is in their Artist’s Statement? – This details what the work is about.

What is their background and training? – Their area of study or perhaps are they self

taught – this background can give you great understanding about the artist and the work they do.

Artists have diverse backgrounds and come to their practice for many different reasons.

Please remember that our event celebrates creativity at all its stages. Some of our artists are emerging and others are well established. This diversity is the strength of our unique event and promises countless discoveries for our visitors.

How many visits can I make? – Many visitors find that 5-7 studios in a day allows them time to chat, drive and picnic, some of our locations are open during later time slots, so plan your trip respecting the open times shown. As this is a driving based event remember to plan your trip and drive safely.

Just to keep in mind Kids and Dogs We ask all visitors to respect that these spaces are usually private not public spaces and in some cases you are in the artists home.

Stick to paths, don’t let your children run or climb or touch unless invited and always ask first before letting your dog onto the property.

Taking photos Please ASK first. Artists have the right to deny others permission to photograph their work and please understand that this is the norm rather than the exception.

The best way to photograph the work is to ask the Artist to be in it with you and always tag the artist and ask for permission if you are going to put images on social media.

I mainly work with oils, but often incorporate a variety of materials into my work. In 2018 my painting, ‘A Fragile Journey’ was a finalist in the inaugural Collie Art Prize.

I am happy to once again clear my work space so that you can enjoy works created in that space.

Painting for my latest Solo Exhibition has given me insight into the many layers of communication in the remote centre of Western Australia. You are welcome to view works and participate in my watercolour demonstrations.

Christian Fletcher is Western Australia’s most successful landscape photographer. He has a natural ability to see and capture a beautiful image and has perfected the art of light, composition, colour and post processing.

I am drawn to the interplay of light. A warm glow on an indoor plant, refections beneath the ocean, these things excite me. It is part of who I am.

In 2018 Vicky attended a glass Masterclass in Scotland followed by a visit to Iceland. These two experiences are the impetus for a new body of work in both glass and paint for 2019.

Inhabiting space between tradition and technology, creating artworks that celebrate craft and tradition, layering of materials, textures, to create unusual surfaces so integral to her work. Visually describing her connection to place, nature and change.

Karl combines a modern twist on vintage, traditional, americano Tattoo art with Mexican day of the dead style. Adding bright colours and morbid ideas of imagination. All presented on fine timbers and stained ply woods.

My recent work covers three areas – vibrant watercolour studies of whatever coastal location I find myself in, textiles including silk screen, shibori and indigo, and historical mixed media portrait studies based on narratives and memories.

Vibrant colours reflect the positive energy of nature in my canvasses.

This year I’ve also explored texture through the medium of textiles.

My up-cycled, sculptural artwork is displayed outdoors in my large established garden.

Inspired by travel and life, Jo’s collection includes paintings from a 2018 Tassie trip. She uses bold colours, believing tonal variations are crucially important and is studying Fine Art and Visual Communication.

Peter Scott has developed a painting style showing influences of the impressionists and his inspiration comes from the subjects that surround him capturing the ever changing ambience and atmospheres that permeate this wonderful region.

I think of Mosaics as tactile paintings that can be outdoors. Making mosaics allows me to recycle whatever I find. My Mosaics add interest, colour and whimsy to a garden.

Ange Brewster has a passion for painting and drawing, enjoying experimental contemporary art. She explores colour and works with a range of mediums from oil paint, charcoal, soft pastels and watercolours. She loves painting figurative and wild animals.

I am a full time woodworker and teacher of students from 12 to 78. My work includes Wood turnings, mixed media sculpture, laser cut wood designs and up cycled framed pieces using marine waste.

Meeks exhibits a unique blend of intricate graphite portraits mixed with whimsical surf and seascapes. Come visit her at her studio shack for a memorable journey down Wilderness Road.

A ‘love of lines’ is apparent in my vineyard work and also appears very significantly in my minimalistic style of life drawing which evoke emotion.

Influenced by my grandmother – a keen gardener, plant lover and painter – I have created an attractive collection of botanical watercolours which includes both well-known exotics and wildflowers endemic to the Southwest of Australia.

Getting outside is good for the soul. Through my artwork, I try to bring the outside in. Creating art that pays tribute to the natural world nurtures my creativity and helps me reconnect with nature.

Peter is inspired by character wood.

It is irregularities that add interest and depth to his work. He gets a kick out of revealing what lies beneath the gnarled, knotted and twisted.

My artworks are a reflection of my love of everything marine, I am currently painting a series that resonates with beach shacks, rope, old boats and coastal finds.

After a month of full time life drawing and painting workshops at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, Anita’s art changed from realism to representation, while maintaining her characteristic narratives.

Originally from Italy, I moved to Margaret River to pursue my passion for painting. Largely self-taught, I use various media and techniques, depicting the beauty and expressivity of the human form, particularly dancers and musicians.

Inspiration comes from Margaret River’s beautiful forests and seascapes.

Olivia studied drawing, painting and design at Perth Art School in the 1970s.

Later in life she qualified as a primary school teacher after attending Murdoch University in Perth and spent many years teaching in schools throughout W.A.

A full time artist and workshop teacher, Fi is all about finding, harnessing, exercising and celebrating creativity. Her own process is quite unusual - a delicate combination of chaos and control. Accident and purpose.

Patricia’s homemade mud brick studio ‘Swallows Welcome’ is a beautiful space where visitors can admire the gardens, Blue and Red winged Wrens and surrounds, whilst viewing her books, cards, prints, watercolours and woodwork. Visitors welcome to bring a picnic and relax.

An exciting part of the Margaret River Readers & Writers Festival, run by Arts Margaret River, this exhibition by various Margaret River artists adds a unique perspective to the festival theme ‘wild, weird and wonderful’ for all to enjoy & contemplate.

This year I am involved in a process of layering and looking at what is behind an image; finding the curious in both modern and ancient places where previous ‘social media’ are almost obliterated.

My work is an intuitive representation of myself. Nothing makes me happier than slathering paint onto a canvas and seeing forms unfold, feeling entranced by the visual chaos of lines, shape and colour.

42 OPEN STUDIOS PHILANTHROPY Become a vital part of our family The Margaret River Region is a rich crucible of creativity and our free, much anticipated, annual Open Studios event provides the opportunity for like-minded people to engage with our artist community in the context of their own studios. Our Artists and their work are at the centre of all we do.

We are partly funded by the artists themselves but this only amounts to about one third of our cost of mounting the event. We are a for-purpose not-for-profit charitable organisation and are keen to develop philanthropic partnerships to continue to develop and expand the event. Starting with an Education and Community Engagement program , including the support of young and emerging artists.

If you would like to become a donor we invite you to join our remarkable community and help stimulate the rich cultural artistic environment of the Margaret River Region.
