It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the rescheduled Margaret River Region Open Studios event for 2020. This September we have 103 artists, including 30 new to the event, opening their studios and ready to greet you. For 16 days they transform the region into an art lovers’ paradise. We have repurposed the printed event guides from postponed April/May event but this digital guide is up to date and fully downloadable. Meeting artists gives visitors a great opportunity to ‘sticky beak’ into often out-of-the-way private spaces. There is much to enjoy discovering the particular creative ideas and techniques of individual artists. It's a chance to share concepts, admire art and maybe even own a piece. A big thanks goes to our sponsors, advertisers, volunteers and board members, as without you the event would simply not be possible. Open Studios is a free event for visitors but it takes an enormous effort to raise funds to make it happen. If you enjoy Open Studios and would like to assist us by making a tax deductible donation please don't hesitate to contact us at art@mrros.com.au. Every contribution will be greatly valued. I hope you enjoy the event and look forward to seeing you in an artist’s studio this September. Jim Davies Chair

MESSAGE FROM OUR PATRONS As the inaugural Patrons of the Margaret River Region Open Studios we are delighted with the success of this very important arts project in the Margaret River region. Each year breaks new records for visitor numbers and last year, for the first time, more than half of the visitors came from outside the region. Likewise the number of artists participating has continued to grow resulting in greater sales values being achieved. We wish the hard working organisational committee, under the Chairmanship of Jim Davies much continued success. Please enjoy the experience of visiting with our very creative arts community. WELCOME MESSAGE FROM HON PAUL PAPALIA CSC MLA, MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND HON ALANNAH MACTIERNAN MLC, MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT The McGowan Government is a proud sponsor of the Margaret River Open Studios through its Regional Events Scheme. The scheme was devised as a way for the Government to support smaller and emerging events in regional Western Australia to boost tourism, increase community vibrancy and participation, and develop regional areas. The Regional Events Scheme plays an important role in positioning Western Australia as an exciting destination to visit and a great place to live by showcasing and promoting a region’s unique and diverse attractions. Sixty-eight regional events across the State have been funded through the 2019-20 Regional Events Scheme. This year’s round includes the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme with a funding pool of $150,000 exclusively allocated to events delivering Aboriginal activities and experiences. Tourism is a key part of the Government’s plan to diversify the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities, especially in regional Western Australia. Events play an important role in this plan, with the Government sponsoring a range of sporting, cultural, arts and culinary events across the State, through Tourism WA, to attract more visitors, encourage them to stay longer, disperse further and do more while they are here. We hope everyone enjoys the event and takes the time to explore the Margaret River region.

HOW TO ‘DO’ OPEN STUDIOS STEP 1
STEP 3
Grab a cuppa at Yahava Koffeeworks take your guide and get 50 cent off and let your eyes do the wandering.
Plan your day - See more art by focusing on a smaller area at a time.
STEP 2 Once you have decided what you like the look of, check out selected artists listing on our website - you’ll see more images of their work and also see any detailed instructions about how best to find them.
STEP 4 Visit local fooderies and grab a coffee at Yahava and take your time, there are loads of great properties to discover as you explore. Don’t rush. If time is short at the end of the day - ring ahead and let an artist know you are on your way. Please always respect opening and
closing times.
Decide who you will visit Flick through this guide and identify which artists you like the look of. Mark these studios and refer to the map to plan your journey. For additional information and more images, refer to the artist profile on our website.
Plan your trip We cover a large area so planning ahead is essential. Use Sat Nav or Google Maps to locate studios and for ‘hard to find’ locations check our website or call the artist. Then plan a route to follow.
Be a great visitor Be respectful and thank the artist for opening their space for the event. Supervise your children and keep them with you while you visit. Always contact the artist first if you would like to bring a dog onto their property.
What to ask an Artist? Our artists welcome your interest in their work. Below are some great conversation starters. Art News published a guide on “How to talk to an Artist’ you can find it at: www.artnews.com/2005/06/01/how-to-talk-to-an-artist.
What is their process? – How do they make their work? What is in their Artist’s Statement? – This details what the work is about. What is their background and training? – Their area of study or perhaps are they self
taught – this background can give you great understanding about the artist and the work they do. Artists have diverse backgrounds and come to their practice for many different reasons.
Please remember that our event celebrates creativity at all its stages. Some of our artists are emerging and others are well established. This diversity is the strength of our unique event and promises countless discoveries for our visitors.
How many visits can I make? – Many visitors find that 5-7 studios in a day allows them time to chat, drive and picnic, some of our locations are open during later time slots, so plan your trip respecting the open times shown. As this is a driving based event remember to plan your trip and drive safely.
Just to keep in mind Kids and Dogs We ask all visitors to respect that these spaces are usually private not public spaces and in some cases you are in the artists home. Stick to paths, don’t let your children run or climb or touch unless invited and always ask first before letting your dog onto the property.
Taking photos Please ASK first. Artists have the right to deny others permission to photograph their work and please understand that this is the norm rather than the exception. The best way to photograph the work is to ask the Artist to be in it with you and always tag the artist and ask for permission if you are going to put images on social media.

I practice the art of Gyotaku, my intention is to capture the life once lived by the fish I print… before I eat it.
I’m obsessed with south west landscapes near my home, yummy florals and a recent dabble into portraits. My impressionist style is very active; walking back, squinting, blocking in tones and shapes with deliberate strokes.
The environment of the south west continues to inspire Vicky’s work, carving into plaster and using glass powder and fritt to form vessels and wall hung works.

McFaull 23 Carmen Painting
With an inclination for expressing a dark sensibility in her art, Mel creates images that often evoke inner musings. Printmaking features strongly in her oeuvre, owing to the expressive nature of the medium.
My artwork is inspired by the joy I have around me – the people I befriend and love, the places I visit, their colours, textures, mood and dynamic compositions. Visit www.carmenmcfaull.com.au for workshop schedules/gallery.

Eva 26 Sue Painting
Louise’s playful, quirky beach babes have taken a textural turn to create greater surface tension. Alongside her hyper-realism and abstract oceanic paintings, Louise introduces forest greens, studying the way light intrinsically interplays with negative space.
Voytek is passionate about metal forms. He continues to explore and expand his use of different metals to produce interesting new designs and finishes. Ceramics, glass, wood and stone are also incorporated.
Sue’s still life paintings utilise distinctive and considered objects, form and colour, that allow intimate, quiet moments of contemplation. Visit her in her cosy studio in her old wooden farmhouse.

My work depends heavily on time spent in nature. I create large drawings, paintings, ceramics and small sculptures that reference the natural world. Visit my peaceful studio, gallery and garden in the bush.
Inspired by history and everyday stories, I create paintings which often juxtapose classical and suburban imagery. I also explore the part animals play in human lives – the realities and mythologies.
Trish Durham is a passionate artist with several decades of experience in many mediums including jewellery, textiles, painting, sculpture and upcycling. Works are textural with depth and colour. Her popular workshops are all about fun and inclusivity! Mixed media workshops (inc lunch & wine!) at the winery Wednesdays: 29th April & 7th May.

Vibrant colours and textiles reflect the positive energy of my art, which has been influenced by a recent trip up North. I am also displaying my upcycled sculptural artwork in my large established garden.
Don Brown’s paintings demonstrate a distinctive style through his use of colour and shade to depict changing patterns of light and atmosphere. He captures the varying moods and in a nuanced impressionistic manner.

I express my interest in human faces and forms by hand building busts and figurines in clay. I also enjoy creating whimsical and practical small objects in paperclay and porcelain.
The inspiration for my art is drawn from recent travelling to Tasmania, New Zealand, the Kimberley and Lithuania, plus art studies in societal marginalization. My third year in Open Studios and I'm loving it!

Living in Margaret River with access to the excellent timbers of the area, Martins design skills have evolved over the years, resulting in beautifully carved and intricately embellished timber bowls of today.
At my new home studio, the delicious hues of the Indian Ocean continue to draw me in and inspire me. I’ve also been exploring portraiture, getting up close and personal with some Margaret River faces.
Phil has always had an affinity with art, in particular painting. He is greatly influenced by his natural surroundings and love of the ocean and this is reflected in his work and life as an artist.

Finding beauty in all that is imperfect. My current work explores the rich complexity of patterns and surface textures found in nature, revealed as earth’s elements expose the layers of time.
Laurie’s work is narrative and surreal drawing on irony and a love of the absurd, with topics as varied as climate change and anthropomorphised cockatoos.
I love the raw, the less manipulated. Far from traditional my rings and necklaces offer a raw beauty. My designs & process of making alludes to the origins of the metal and gem stones.

Tamara Aurora sculpts from upcycled metal and clay and paints using watercolours, acrylics and textiles and finds her predominant subject matter is the divine feminine and nature. Her works is underpinned with Sacred Geometry.
Several new fine art watercolours and drawings of Australian birds and landscapes will be featured along with an expanded range of limited edition prints. Our studio forms part of our light-filled house and beautiful garden.
As an emerging artist, new to the region, I am all about exploring different ways to share my colourful world where many things are happening at the same time, living in the chaotic order.

Jackson 77 Emily Printmaking, Mixed Media
Peter Harry 78 Furniture, Sculpture, Woodwork
Francesco aims to expand the boundaries of art through traditional and experimental techniques. He currently lives in Margaret River, where he works for Leon Pericles and teaches printmaking techniques.
Emily portrays the natural world of Australia. Her art pays tribute to, and celebrates the living world that nurtures her creativity. The aim is to bring the viewer into that moment, place, with all its wonderful nuances. Represented by JahRoc Galleries. ENTRY TO STUDIO VIA BACK LANE.
Peter is inspired by character wood. It is irregularities that add interest and depth to his work. He gets a kick out of the gnarled knotted and twisted.

Inspiration comes from Margaret River’s beautiful forests and seascapes. Olivia studied drawing, painting and design at Perth Art School in the 1970s. Later in life she qualified as a primary school teacher after attending Murdoch University in Perth and spent many years teaching in schools throughout W.A.

Fi Wilkie
Weathered timber and rusted steel is completely under-appreciated. I like to upcycle scrap into precious artworks, by building my own canvases from rusty old milking sheds, and adorning them with portraits of the former inhabitants.
Inspired by the unusual shapes found in Australian flora, Fi’s work is a colourful celebration of the local bushland and its wildlife. Sketchbooks, collage and print making are used to develop her ideas and she teaches these processes in her workshops. View original paintings, fine art prints, artcards, cushions and homewares in her converted hayshed studio.

44 OPEN STUDIOS PHILANTHROPY Become a vital part of our family The Margaret River Region is a rich crucible of creativity and our free, much anticipated, annual Open Studios event provides the opportunity for like-minded people to engage with our artist community in the context of their own studios. Our Artists and their work are at the centre of all we do. We are partly funded by the artists themselves but this only amounts to about one third of our cost of mounting the event. We are a for-purpose not-for-profit charitable organisation and are keen to develop philanthropic partnerships to continue to develop and expand the event. Starting with an Education and Community Engagement program, including the support of young and emerging artists. If you would like to become a donor we invite you to join our remarkable community and help stimulate the rich cultural artistic environment of the Margaret River Region. All donations are tax deductible.
