壹 CHAPTER I

CHILDHOOD & URBANISATION

memory about ceremony Festival and ceremony is an important part of my childhood memory. My family get together to celebrate different festivals and gods’ birthday by preparing countless foods and praying. I have always been fascinated by the story behind the festive and the meaning of the behaviours and sequences of the ceremony.

Quanzhou, China My hometown, Quanzhou, a city locates on the southeast coastline of China, used to be the largest harbour city around the world during the Song Dynasty. My ancestors made the trade with people around the world along the Maritime Silk Road. Therefore, missionaries of different religions came to my hometown to build their temple to spread their beliefs.

culture fusion Different cultural elements were recast in the city by architecture. Chinese style Islamic praying room, western angel decoration at the temple, Arabic story engraving at the pagoda etc. They have become unique urban phenomenons that only exist in my city. We are the children blessed by the gods and ancestors.

urbanisation & tradition With the urbanisation and economic blooming happening in China, my city has been changed dramatically. High-rise buildings and skyscrapers dominate more and more areas of the city by demolishing the old buildings. Yet urbanisation brings wealth to our country, but at the same time, something has been lost during it. With the temple and ancestor hall being demolished, the activities that used to happen inside also disappear with the space. We are losing the identity of the city. Maybe in the near future, the past of the city have been swapped out clearly and we can only imagine what the city used to be from the documents. It will be a tragedy if a city with no origin, no history or culture.

How we can respond to this

by architecture?

site condition This project selects one block of buildings located at the heart of Shapowei Village. In this block, a temple was built on the top of the building. 框 structure 架 By referencing the five-foot-way structure, columns are offset 1.5m from the existing facade to create a framework for the second facade.

连 corridors 廊 New corridor creates a horizontal connection between buildings. It becomes a new public space for the residents with a similar space scale with the five-footway corridor on the street side.

舞 stages 台 Stages are created on the rooftop space of the buildings. They have different scales located on both sides of the temple to accommodate different scale activities for the public or the residents. Therefore, they become different sceneries of the theatre.

入 entrances 口 New entrances can be created by the new corridor and stage. The original transportation path can be changed and create more interaction between residents.

basic entrance unit

入 rooms 口 New rooms are being added into the voids among buildings. They become the new public spaces on the site or the backstages for the theatre.

连 connection 接 External stairs, ramps and lifts are added to the structure to create another vertical transportation space from the existing isolated internal stairs. Each room on the site now has better transportation than before.

阳 balcony 台 Openable balconies attached to the structure allow residents to expand their corridor space to accommodate larger scale activities and can be seen from the street level.

屋 roofs 顶 Two different types of roof are covering most area of stages.

By the nature of polished metal plates, activities on the stage will be blended into the rooftop and be seen from the ground floor.

A modular roof system above the residential area allows the residents to decorate by themselves.

结 structure 构 The all-white metal frame allows the light to be dyed into any colour to set off the atmosphere of different activities. The red structure is set in the middle to indicate the main theme of this theatre -- religion.

道 props 具 Some props are designed in modular boxes, which allow the residents to move them easily among the theatre by ramps and lifts. They can be set up quickly to use for different purposes.

水上 water platform 平台 A modular floating platform system can be assembled for different purposes to extend the activities from the land to the water.
