FROM WASTE TO WONDER “Invisible – Livable” is made entirely of reclaimed and recycled materials – wooden planks, old rubble and marine debris washed ashore on Phuket beaches.

In the artist’s hands, these discarded fragments transform into a symbolic home – imperfect but full of warmth, fragile yet alive with meaning.

Step closer and each piece seems to whisper its own story: a remnant of a fishing boat, a forgotten beam from a seaside hut. Together, they create a place of belonging, transforming what was once invisible into a home for the imagination.

Installed at the heart of Jungceylon, this artwork becomes a shared space for everyone, a collective moment of reflection and renewal.

But the invitation doesn’t end there: Jungceylon is also hosting art workshops and interactive sessions for visitors to express their own creativity and connection with the environment. This is art that doesn’t just ask to be seen – it asks to be felt and lived.

As we head into 2026, Bangkok Airways is embracing several key developments as we chart a path of stable, long-term growth in the new year. Our mission is to respond effectively to an ever-changing business landscape, shaped by economic, social and technological shifts along with legal and political frameworks.

Coordination within our group of aviationrelated businesses remains our core strength, allowing us to support and enhance one another while upholding our commitment to sustainable progress. In line with this new mission, the airline recently signed an agreement to purchase between 10 and 12 ATR 72-600 aircraft to replace and expand the existing fleet. The new aircraft will be delivered from the fourth quarter this year to serve destinations including Samui, Sukhothai and Trat.

Opened in late 2025, the new Bangkok Airways passenger lounge is now serving Business Class (Blue Ribbon Class) and Economy Class guests at Don Mueang Airport in the Thai capital.

The lounge is designed in an elegant and modern minimalist style under the theme “Whisper of the Ocean”. Bangkok Airways currently operates three Bangkok-Samui roundtrip flights daily from Don Mueang Airport.

In Bangkok, journeys of discovery often begin on the water. Making Sangkhaya Fak Thong is easier than it looks. Start by slicing the top off a pumpkin, removing the seeds and drying it well. In a bowl,

whisk together eggs, coconut cream, palm sugar, a pinch of salt and pandan leaves. Stir till the sugar dissolves, strain twice for smoothness then pour the mixture into the pumpkin. Steam for about an hour, cool completely, then chill to set before slicing.

Thailand marks Muay Thai Day on February 6 – when gyms across the country overflow with the sound of drums, the scent of incense and deep reverence as fighters bow low to honour their Khru Muay (boxing teachers). The day celebrates a martial art that has travelled from the battlefields of old Siam to become one of the world’s most renowned fighting traditions and a living emblem of Thai identity.

Long before Muay Thai became a sport, it was a vital lifeline for soldiers in battle. Some 300 years ago, when wars were fought at close quarters, Thai warriors trained in Muay Boran (ancient boxing) – unarmed combat that weaponised every part of the body: fists were swords, elbows hammers, and knees and shins spears. Striking techniques were coupled with shielding moves in what became known as the “art of eight limbs”, referring to the eight points of contact in combat.

The history of Muay Thai is written by heroes who helped forge the legendary resilience of the Thai spirit. Among them is Nai Khanom Tom, who was imprisoned after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 but defeated 10 Burmese champions to win his freedom. Equally revered is Phraya Phichai Dap Hak, the warrior who vanquished foes using Muay Boran techniques after his sword broke in battle.

When peace returned, Muay Thai shifted from battlefields to village fairs, becoming a rite of passage for young men and a spectacle enjoyed by both kings and commoners. The sport won royal patronage in the early 20th century under King Chulalongkorn, when its techniques were refined in championship rings.

In recent years, champions like Somrak Khamsing, Thailand’s first Olympic gold medallist, and Buakaw Banchamek have introduced this heritage to the global sporting arena.

MUAY THAI IN POPULAR CULTURE However, it was cinema and pop music that propelled Muay Thai onto the world stage.

Actor Tony Jaa’s electrifying performance in “Ong-Bak” introduced global audiences to authentic Muay Thai techniques, inspiring a wave of foreigners to train in Thailand. Other films like “Kickboxer”, coupled with the rise of MMA, UFC and ONE Championship, boosted the world’s love affair with Muay Thai. Today, its cultural reach extends far beyond the ring. Lisa Blackpink wore a Muay Thai-inspired outfit during her recent “Deadline” solo tour, complete with boxing shorts emblazoned with her name in Thai.

Muay Thai’s global fame has turned boxing camps and stadiums in Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai into pilgrimage sites where foreigners come to train and immerse themselves in the sport’s traditions.

Before Muay Thai became a global phenomenon, it was a patchwork of different fight schools – each shaped by a lineage of local teachers. Among these, four styles stood out: Muay Chaiya, Muay Korat, Muay Tha Sao, and Muay Lop Buri.

Muay Chaiya (Surat Thani)

Called the “Strongman’s Style”, Muay Korat comes from Thailand’s rugged Northeast.

This school is championed for its raw power and endurance. Fighters take a wide stance, delivering crushing punches, brutal kicks and sharp knee strikes to overpower opponents. In the old days, Muay Korat warriors trained with daily tasks: think hauling water, pounding rice, chopping firewood, climbing coconut trees and running through rice fields to build strength, agility and stamina.

Muay Tha Sao (Uttaradit)

Dubbed the “pride of northern Thailand”, this style is noted for its fast, agile movements. Fighters count on speed, light-footedness and improvisations, delivering rapid kicks and flying knees and elbows from unexpected angles.

This style employs a wide stance and backward weight shift, transitioning between attack and defence with extraordinary speed. Fluid and adaptable, Muay Tha Sao blends finesse with force, showcasing a martial art where strategy, rhythm and agility outmatch sheer strength.

Muay Lop Buri (Lop Buri)

The oldest style of all, Muay Lop Buri is defined by intelligence and agility.

“Thailand’s cocktail scene is creative, rich and utterly unique.

Our culture is diverse and our creativity comes from a society that is very open-minded,” explains mixologist Niks AnumanRajadhon, the driving force behind some of Bangkok’s most influential bars.

“The scene has been evolving at its own pace. It began in hotel bars, then expanded to more classic twist bars,” he added. “Now, we’re in the era of speciality concept bars – bars that express Thai identity.

The scene has accelerated rapidly over the past five years. Welcome to the golden era of Thailand’s cocktail scene!”

Niks is the man behind Thailand’s first dedicated gin bar, Teens of Thailand, as well as Asia Today, specialising in cocktails made with local ingredients. He’s also developed concept bars such as Tax and G.O.D, and is the co-owner of Issan Rum, Thailand’s homegrown agricole rum.

Over the past decade, Thailand’s nightlife – especially Bangkok – has veered away from clubs towards a playground of inventive cocktail destinations. High volume and energy have given way to nuance, mastery and flair. Bars across the country are carving their own distinct identities, putting Thailand firmly on the global cocktail map.

A key ingredient in this renaissance is the rise of local spirits. Micro-distilleries in Thailand are crafting everything from aromatic rums and gins to silky-smooth whiskies, innovative local brews that bartenders nationwide are championing.

Menus that once relied on imported booze now highlight homegrown spirits. Farm-to-glass is no longer just a buzzword, but a proud badge of authenticity.

“Thailand’s cocktail scene has been around for about two decades, but the local spirits scene has only taken off in the past five years,” says Niks. “We have a rum distillery in Koh Samui called Samui Rum, and it’s refreshing to see local spirits and concepts popping up at bars around Bangkok. Finally, we have concepts that fit us and our culture, rather than being inspired by, say, English weather.”

A POCKET OF CREATIVITY Begin your journey at Trok Tua Ngork, a narrow lane that hides one of Chinatown’s newest cultural micro-communities: Baan Trok Tua Ngork. From the outside, it looks like a typical row of shophouses, but step inside and you find yourself in a sunlit courtyard, a quiet sanctuary amid the busy lanes. The design of this century-old restored ancestral home – raw textures softened by greenery – provides serene relief from the city’s buzz.

Each level offers a delightful discovery. Delia Mexican Eatery anchors the ground floor with authentic Latino offerings, while upstairs, Namsu – meaning “vinegar” – pairs Shan-inspired Thai dishes with a handsome sake bar. The third floor houses the chic Messengerservice Bar alongside In-Residence, a gallery showcasing contemporary exhibitions.

The grand, 60-year-old building that once housed publisher Thai Wattana Panich before being gutted by fire two decades ago has risen from the ashes as Bangkok Kunsthalle, an art space reborn for a new generation. Its debut exhibition was curated by Stefano Rabolli Pansera, former director of London’s renowned Hauser & Wirth modern art gallery. Once fully renovated, Bangkok Kunsthalle promises to become a major hub for contemporary culture and arts in Thailand.

BANGKOK’S ARTISTIC ARTERY Stretching just a kilometre along the bank of the Chao Phraya river, Song Wat Road has transformed from a dried-food and spice hub to a buzzing corridor of design cafés, independent galleries and inventive eateries. Start at the Rachawong Pier end, where river breezes mingle with the aroma of incense and fruit from nearby Sampeng Market.

Slip into the narrow lane by Soi Bophit Phimuk near Ong Ang Canal to discover Homprung by Baihor, a café in a 100-year-old colonialstyle building that was home to a nobleman during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. It was bought in 2014 by the makers of Thailand’s iconic Baihor herbal remedies, who

restored and reopened the place as a modern herbal café in 2024. Their workshops for herbal inhalers are so popular that reservations are often required.

The menu brims with healthy yet delicious treats like softserve herbal ice cream and chrysanthemum ice popsicles, while shelves offer souvenirs with a contemporary twist – a delightful contrast to the bitter Baihor medicine that was once a household staple across Thailand.

Back on Song Wat, richly different discoveries lie behind almost every facade. TAY tea and coffee bar stands in stark tribute to minimalism, with exposed textures that celebrate the building’s age and an upper floor doubling as a pocket-sized gallery and workshop.

A few doors down, FV Café pushes creativity one step further with beverages crafted from traditional herbs, fruits and foraged plants, including mimosa, Indian gooseberry, pennywort, langsat, and mangosteen. Upstairs, a reconstructed traditional Isaan house invites visitors into a cultural time warp.

Follow the aroma of fresh bread and you arrive at The Old Breadshop, a new bakery set inside a former warehouse. The loaves here are generously stuffed with nuts, raisins and cranberries, and priced affordably since all the ingredients are sourced by the owners themselves.

Don’t miss the almond milk topped with a bear-shaped almond-milk lolly ice.

For fresh herbs and soul-food bites, Song Viet is the place to be.

Drawing on heirloom Vietnamese recipes, the restaurant serves steaming bowls of Pho and warm baguettes straight from the oven.

Nearby, Galerie Monument Song Wat offers nourishment for the eyes and heart. Hidden beneath the CÉRÉMONIALE Matcha Atelier, the space is accessed via a narrow staircase that opens into a petite gallery.

The atmosphere is playful, with Japanese artist Takehiro Ikawa’s pink cat, Mr Kobayashi, peeking at you from unexpected corners.

Cross the street and a centuryold wooden gate opens onto one of Chinatown’s most photogenic corners. Facing the river, this hidden enclave boasts cafés, pop-ups and boutiques. Keep an eye out for Oyster & Things, a trove of vintage-style décor;

Wabi’s, serving artisanal loaves; the charming Japanese tea bar Matchamaru; onest, a minimalist fragrance and home-care shop; and Long Dang Dang, an expansive warehouse-turned-event space.

THE ROYAL BLOSSOM The SRT Royal Blossom is a time machine, whisking visitors from the 21st century back to the 20th, from snowy Hokkaido to tropical Thailand. These grand 1980s coaches – heirlooms of the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido)’s Hamanasu

service – have found a second life on scenic journeys through Thailand.

Cedar-lined walls, plush seats, panoramic windows and warm lighting transport passengers to the elegance of a bygone era before the train even departs.

Once underway, the train’s soothing sway and hum are enhanced by modern comforts like air-conditioning, USB ports, and vacuum toilets. The café-lounge carriage adds to the leisurely charm of classic travel, inviting passengers to linger and watch the landscape drift by.

A highlight of Royal Blossom’s scenic routes is Lop Buri’s charming Pa Sak Jolasid Dam, a journey packed with romance and nostalgia. Beyond Bangkok, rural Thailand unfurls like a slide show – tranquil rice paddies in a warm morning light, riverside villages shaded by coconut palms, and distant hills rising through morning mist. The gentle chugging motion evokes the good old days, when the journey was as pleasurable as the destination.

KIHA 183 The KiHa 183 marries Japanese engineering with Thai storytelling for a journey like no other. Built in the 1980s for JR Hokkaido, this diesel

classic once cut through snowbound northern Japan. Gifted to Thailand in 2021, the train was refurbished and reborn as a vintage tourist experience. Its iconic slanted-nose silhouette was preserved, while the interiors were refreshed with cushioned seats, air-conditioning and picture windows for panoramic views of the Thai countryside.

Among its many scenic routes, Kanchanaburi is the most enchanting. The train glides out of Bangkok through a patchwork of rice fields, palm-dappled villages and shimmering temple spires.

The River Kwai glimmers beneath forested hills as the train ascends to its high point at the Death Railway, where tracks cling to the cliffside over the water, offering sweeping views and a profound sense of history. Key stops include the bridge over the River Kwai and limestone cliffs emerging from tropical forest above the Kwai Noi River.

BANGKOK AIRWAYS SIGNS MOU FOR SUSTAINABLE THAI AVIATION

Bangkok Airways' President, Mr Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth joined senior executives from seven other Thai airlines in signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to promote the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The signing ceremony was hosted

by Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and presided by Air Chief Marshal Manat Chawanaprayoon, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), along with Mr Saran Benjanirat, CAAT Deputy Director General. The event was held at Asawin Grand Convention Hotel in Bangkok recently.

This collaboration brings together CAAT and eight airlines – Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, K-Mile Air, Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, Thai Lion Air, and Thai VietJet Air – to support Thailand’s goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050.

The airlines will adopt sustainable aviation practices under guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), which Thailand joined at its launch in 2021.

In his remarks, Mr. Puttipong said that Bangkok Airways’ mission has long been rooted in sustainable 80

business practices and reducing its carbon footprint. He added that the MOU marks another significant step in promoting the use of SAF, a proven way of reducing carbon emissions.

The airline first began using SAF as part of its “Low Carbon Skies” initiative, which was announced in June 2024, and adopted it for regular commercial flights on July 1 this year. “Low Carbon Skies” serves as a key mechanism driving Thailand’s aviation sector towards tangible sustainability, while also benefiting passengers by offering them greener service standards and a role in environmental stewardship.

Meanwhile, CAAT has acknowledged the rising energy costs associated with adopting SAF and said it is considering a separate carbon surcharge for international routes, to be applied on a voluntary basis by airlines. The surcharge, expected to be implemented in 2026, will reflect the cost of carbon reduction and offsetting within Thailand’s aviation sector. CAAT will oversee the process to ensure transparency and alignment with international standards, supporting Thailand’s transition to sustainable aviation across all dimensions.

BANGKOK AIRWAYS HOSTS 69TH AAPA ASSEMBLY OF PRESIDENTS Bangkok Airways, in its capacity as chair of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) for 2025, hosted the opening ceremony of the 69th AAPA Assembly of Presidents in November 2025. Presided over by Thailand’s Transport Minister and Deputy PM Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the event was officially opened by Bangkok Airways' President, Mr Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth and Mr Subhas Menon, Director General of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA).

The ceremony was attended by senior executives of leading airlines across Asia-Pacific, along with key government and private-sector representatives from the aviation and tourism sectors. Participants exchanged perspectives and strategic directions for driving sustainable growth in the regional aviation sector.

The ceremony was held on November 15, 2025, at the BDMS Connect Centre, Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok.

The event took place on Koh Samui in Surat Thani province recently.

Now in its eighth year, the project underscores Bangkok Airways’ continued commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. As part of the airline’s “Low Carbon Skies by Bangkok Airways” initiative, the programme aims to minimise the environmental footprint of aviation while helping to restore green spaces and strengthen local ecosystems.

By planting coconut trees – a timeless symbol of Koh Samui – the initiative also supports eco-tourism, sustains community livelihoods and promotes environmental awareness among future generations.

Guardians of Halabala A flock of hornbills sweeps over the canopy of trees deep in the remote, misty Halabala Forest, which stretches across the hills of Narathiwat on the Thai-Malaysia border. These charismatic birds, with their powerful wings and echoing calls, are vital seed dispersers – helping to regenerate the rainforest and maintain its rich biodiversity. Celebrated on February 13 every year with national Hornbill Day, they remain a powerful symbol of lush wilderness. Halabala offers visitors a rare chance to glimpse these feathered forest guardians in one of their last strongholds in Thailand.
