Over the past months, we have been proud to present several initiatives that reflect both our continued growth and commitment to tourism and sustainability. A key highlight was the special demonstration flight of our Airbus A319 from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Trat.
“Airbus A319 Demonstration Flights Bangkok–Trat–Bangkok” showcased the readiness of Trat Airport to accommodate larger aircraft and a higher number of passengers. This development marks a major step in the airport’s transformation into a regional aviation hub for Eastern Thailand. Bangkok Airways currently operates 21 roundtrip flights weekly on the route, using 70-seat ATR72-600 aircraft.
Another memorable event was the Sukhothai Half Marathon on September 28, which attracted more than 1,600 runners. The running extravaganza celebrated Sukhothai’s timeless charm and underscored its potential as a leading cultural and wellness destination.
This year has also been one of great honour for us. Bangkok Airways received both the Thailand Tourism Outstanding Award and the Thailand Tourism Sustainability Award in the category “Sustainable Tourism Support and Promotion Organization – Private Sector” at the Thailand Tourism Awards 2025. The awards were graciously bestowed by HRH Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi.
The airline was also proud to be recognised with 5-Star Certification for the third consecutive year under the Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR) programme by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). In addition, we received the Excellent Level EIA Monitoring Awards 2025 from the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) for our Sukhothai Airport Project. These achievements reaffirm our steadfast dedication to sustainable operations, environmental stewardship and responsible growth.
In another key milestone, we hosted and chaired the 69 th Assembly of Presidents of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), held at the Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok from November 14 to 15. The event welcomed senior executives from 18 member airlines and provided a valuable platform for advancing international cooperation and strategic partnerships across the aviation industry.
As 2025 comes to a close, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our passengers for your continued trust and support. Thank you for choosing to fly with Bangkok Airways. We remain deeply committed to delivering comfort, warmth and memorable experiences every time you travel with us.
We look forward to welcoming you again in the year ahead.

Loy Krathong, one of Thailand’s most enchanting celebrations, falls on the full moon of the 12th lunar month – November 5 this year. Bodies of water across the country shimmer with floating, candlelit krathongs –delicate lotus-shaped craft made from banana leaves – symbolising gratitude, renewal and the release of negativity. In Chiang Mai, the celebration coincides with the Yi Peng Lantern Festival (November 4-6), when thousands of glowing lanterns rise into night sky, creating a breathtaking sight.

Journeys That Heal
Wildlife tourism is shifting. Forget the quick photo ops and box-ticking – today’s travellers want to connect, give back, and leave wild habitats and nearby communities stronger than they found them. And across Asia, a new kind of experience is waiting.
Imagine strolling with elephants through dappled forests, helping chop fruit for their lunch, or simply watching their daily rituals of bathing, eating and playing. Gone are the days of elephant rides and circus-like performances.
With their gentle, expressive eyes, swaying heads and rounded bodies, elephants often seem like oversized toddlers – splashing in water, chasing one another, and offering curious trunks to visitors.
Travel becomes transformation when each step leaves nature stronger than before
In Chiang Mai and Lampang, sanctuaries are rewriting the script on elephant tourism by channelling entry fees into food, space, and medical care for these childlike giants. Prefer beaches to jungle? In Krabi, Phuket and the Maldives, snorkelling is no longer just about sightseeing – it’s an opportunity to restore and protect vibrant reefs. Guided by marine biologists, visitors glide through coral nurseries, learn how to plant baby corals by hand, and witness the reef’s slow, kaleidoscopic comeback. Every dive becomes a story of repair and wonder. Back on the beach, turtles steal the show. Few moments rival the sight of a hatchling’s first frantic crawl towards the surf. In Phuket and Phang Nga, conservation centres invite visitors to witness incubation,
hatching and even that life-defining dash to the ocean. Each visit directly funds community-led projects to keep Thailand’s turtle population alive and thriving.
Even birdwatchers have their sanctuary. In Buri Ram, wetlands echo with the calls of rare saurus cranes – a tall, red-crowned and stately spectacle that reminds visitors of the delicate balance between rural life and wilderness.
From elephants to coral gardens, turtles to cranes, the message is clear: you’re not just passing through, you’re part of the story. These encounters linger long after the trip ends – not just as snapshots in your social-media feed, but as profound experiences that protect our shared natural wonders for the generations ahead.

Coconut + Pandan = Pure Magic
Thailand’s traditional Piak Poon dessert gets a luxurious modern makeover with silky coconut cream
One bite of Piak Poon Kathi Sot – the fresh pandan pudding bathed in lusciously sweet coconut cream – and it’s easy to see why it wins so many hearts. A soft, springy texture and the perfect balance of sweet and savoury makes Piak Poon not just a treat for the tastebuds but also a taste of Thailand’s rich culinary heritage.
Originally made from fermented rice flour, Piak Poon is celebrated for its chewy, jelly-like consistency. Generations ago, the dessert was a firm little square called Si Liam Khanom Piak Poon, made with arrowroot flour. Today, it’s a silky, melt-inyour-mouth delight crowned with delicious fresh coconut cream.
The dessert comes in various forms, each with striking looks to match their fabulous flavour. The jet-black variety, tinted with burnt coconut husks, honours ancient Thai culinary techniques. But it’s the jade green variety that steals the show, with the fragrant juice of freshly pounded pandan leaves lending a vibrant colour, enticing aroma and subtle earthy sweetness.
Preparing traditional Piak Poon is a labour of love. Rice flour is ground into a silky paste, blended with palm and cane sugar, toddy palm and a hint of lime juice, then steamed to perfection. The squares are cut bite-size and garnished with shredded coconut and a pinch of salt.
The modern version preserves this magic while adding luxurious touches: thick coconut cream, tender strands of young coconut and roasted sesame seeds elevate Piak Poon into a velvety, indulgent delight.
For those inspired to make it at home, the process starts by blending rice and starch flour with pandan juice and a touch of lime. The mixture is then slowly cooked with coconut sugar, brown sugar and a pinch of salt until it thickens into a sticky, pudding-like paste. Once ready, it can be piped into shapes or scooped into moulds, left to set and then finished with coconut cream and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
The result: A dessert that is as visually striking as it is heavenly in flavour.
THAILAND TREASURES
Phetchabun: Where History Meets Highlands
Journey into Thailand’s hidden heart, where mist-wrapped mountains rise above ancient shrines, and echoes of bygone
empires still linger
Words: Phoowadon Duangmee Photos: Shutterstock
Many destinations in Thailand are world famous for their beaches or nightlife – but Phetchabun is not among them. Tucked between Central and Northeast Thailand, this hidden gem, meaning “abundant land”, overflows with history, faith and breathtaking natural beauty. But a word of warning: travellers hunting bucket-list landmarks may be disappointed – this province deals in timeless experiences. An enchanting showcase of Thai culture and nature, Phetchabun tells its story in ancient ruins, mountaintop temples, national parks and close-knit communities.
TIME TRAVELLING IN ANCIENT CITY
No journey to Phetchabun is complete without a visit to Si Thep Historical Park –an ancient city recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Here, visitors step back a thousand years as this oncebustling crossroads of civilisations rises in the imagination.
Thriving as a moated city between the 6th and 11th centuries, Si Thep is a treasure trove of relics from the Dvaravati, Khmer and Lop Buri empires. The visitor
centre unfolds the city’s stories and secrets, but the real enchantment lies in exploring its ruins.
Highlights include Prang Song Phi Nong, twin towers enshrining sacred relics; the enigmatic Khao Khlang Nok, a vast stupa base for a once-mighty Buddhist monument; and Prang Si Thep, where Hinduism and Buddhism meet in stone.
Strolling alone among the ruins, with only cicadas and crunching gravel for company, visitors can almost hear the echoes of priests, pilgrims and traders who once gave life to this sacred city.
FAITH IN THE CLOUDS
From Si Thep, the road climbs to the cool highlands of Khao Kho, a hill station known for its crisp air and lush, rolling landscape. Here spirituality takes dazzling form at Wat Phrathat Pha Son Kaeo.
A giant cascade of five gleaming white Buddhas, arranged in ascending size on a single pedestal, watch over a fertile valley often wrapped in mist. Nearby, a lotusshaped chedi shimmers with colourful mosaics of glass and ceramics, creating a cosmic kaleidoscope. Built as a symbol of mindfulness and purity, the temple also evokes a joyful work of art.
Elsewhere in the province, temples radiate a quieter spiritual power. Phetbura Buddhist Park is home to the world’s largest brass Buddha statue, casting its serenity across rice fields. Wat Dhammayan is wreathed in mythical naga serpents – a rich tapestry blending myth and reality. Meanwhile, Wat Sap Phairo clings to the hillside, rewarding visitors with jaw-dropping views of the province.

MOUNTAINS, MIST, AND NATIONAL PARKS
Phethabun matches thrilling heritage with awe-inspiring natural beauty.
Known as Thailand’s little Switzerland for its chilly peaks rising above seas of mist, Khao Kho attracts weekend visitors during the cool season (October to December). Sunrise seekers head to Khao Takhian Ngo Viewpoint, where golden light spills over valleys sunk in rolling clouds.
For trekking adventures, Nam Nao National Park offers 960 square kilometres of wilderness pine forest, grasslands, and rugged mountains dotted with hidden caves. In winter, a white frost cloaks the lush vegetation, while orchids bloom along the trails. Deer, macaques and even wild elephants roam through the depths of its forests.
Phetchabun is also a geological wonderland, its landscape shaped by global tectonic upheaval over millions of years. The dramatic Nam Nao Canyon, carved 200 million years ago as the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart, rises majestically in the east of the park. Nearby, the Loei Dun Potholes are an otherworldly sight – cylindrical sandstone depressions sculpted by swirling currents over the millennia.
At Si Dit Waterfall, visitors can plunge into natural pools and explore its communist-era backstory, preserved in the water-powered rice mill. Further downstream, the Kaeng Bang Rachan Rapids teem with rare freshwater jellyfish while attracting blooms of thirsty butterflies.
Beyond its natural, historical and spiritual treasures, Phetchabun also sheds light on a conflict that helped shape the nation we know today.
Phra Tamnak Khao Kho Palace and the Khao Kho Sacrifice Memorial stand as reminders of the province’s role in Thailand’s battle against communist insurgency – a reminder that today’s serenity is built on past struggles.

Phetchabun flavours are bold and vibrant – spicy, savoury and sour with a rich and lingering umami. The culinary star is Wichian Buri’s grilled chicken, marinated overnight in tamarind, garlic, chilli, sugar and salt, then grilled over an open flame until smoky and tender.
Best paired with sticky rice, a plate of fresh papaya salad and ice-cold beer, this simple yet perfect combination embodies the region’s honest, hearty cuisine.
fields and markets overflowing with shogun oranges, crisp cabbages and mulberries. Visitors can join in farm activities – fishing, weaving or fruit-picking – and connect with communities whose lives remain closely tied to the land.
Local museums further enrich the journey. The Phetchabun Intrachai Archaeological Hall displays artefacts unearthed at Si Thep, while the Lomsak Museum explores Thai-Lom culture through costumes, tools and everyday objects.
What makes Phetchabun worth visiting is not a single landmark, but its contrasts: ancient moated cities beside glittering modern temples, mist-wrapped mountains rising over sun-baked canyons, sacred monuments alongside war memorials. Together they weave a portrait of a province that endures, evolves and continues to inspire.
PLANNING A VISIT
Phetchabun is five to six hours by car from Bangkok. Accommodation ranges from rustic homestays to boutique resorts in Khao Kho. The cool season (November to February) is the most popular time to visit, though each season offers its own charms –from lush monsoon waterfalls to fields of wildflowers in summer.

Thai ultra-luxury villas are redefining travel – blending privacy and luxe lifestyles with smart investment opportunities

No longer just a niche indulgence, ultra-luxury holiday villas are quickly becoming a prime motivation for travel. These must-visit escapes promise privacy, tailored experiences, cultural resonance and exclusivity – qualities that appeal to both high-end travellers and investors. In Thailand, this shift has turned luxury villa living into a star attraction for both tourism and real estate.
Think art-filled architectural masterpieces, wellness retreats that rival resorts, party-ready bachelor pads, and serene estates. For many travellers, the focus is less on the location and more about the villa itself.
“Ten to 15 years ago, people came to experience the destination. Now, they come for the property,” says Thulana Fernando, Cluster Director of Marketing for Anantara Layan Phuket Resort, Layan Residences by Anantara, Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, Avani+ Khao Lak Resort, and Layan Life by Anantara.
WHY VILLAS ARE TAKING OVER
The rise of villas comes down to a single truth: they deliver total privacy and personalisation. In Thailand, the villa model has been elevated into fully managed sanctuaries, complete with upkeep, security and attentive hospitality.
“People are drawn to the design, the quality, the views and the assurance of being part of a well-run community,” says Tim Dean-Smith, founder of the Azur Samui.
The luxe villa trend is being driven by wider global shifts. Since
the COVID-19 pandemic, long-stay demand has soared as travellers seek havens of stability amid uncertainty at home – be it political, economic, or even weather-related, Dean-Smith noted. Many guests stay for months, blending leisure with remote work – proof that villas are no longer just short-term hideouts.
Though privacy sits at the heart of the appeal, the experience goes much further. Once defined by a modest kitchen and a couple of bedrooms, today’s villas boast private pools, terraces and gardens – along with chefs crafting
tailored menus, spa therapists on call, and concierge teams helping to manage every detail of your itinerary. Guests wake up in homes that feel like theirs, but with the allure of a boutique resort.
Thailand has embraced this luxury lifestyle and turned it into an art form. Many villas are no longer just temporary homes but fully managed sanctuaries. Professional teams handle everything, from daily upkeep to concierge services and round-the-clock security.
VILLAS AS DESTINATIONS
The new generation of villas has changed the game: no longer just places to visit, they are destinations in themselves.
In Phuket, tropical-modern designs offer panoramic ocean

“Single-storey Balinese villas are very popular. They are open and airy, usually featuring 3-4 bedrooms, outdoor spaces, large windows and sunbathing areas. People prefer not to rely on airconditioning and don’t like closedoff spaces. They want natural light to flow in,” says Naruewan Pinit, Director of Marketing at Botanica Luxury Villas Phuket.
Meanwhile, Koh Samui’s luxury villa market is booming, attracting developers, investors, and those in search of a second home. “Right now, I mostly see people looking for a second home or an investment, and each buyer wants something different, whether it’s location,

view, or holistic elements,” explains Mario Joao DeSouza, founder of DOMO Development. “I listen to my clients and to the market, knowing that architecture and design appeal to each person in their own way.”
The message is clear: when your villa is this extraordinary, staying in becomes the ultimate luxury.
DESIGNS THAT PAMPER
Ultra-luxury villas are no longer onesize-fits-all. These stunning retreats are now tailored to reflect the passions and lifestyles of their guests.
Imagine stepping into a space adorned with curated paintings and sculpture-filled gardens, where guests don’t just view art, they live within it. “The key selling point of Botanica Luxury Villas Phuket is luxury centred on art. The villas showcase artworks throughout the home, which often reflect the style of the featured artists. Gardens are designed in a majestic modern Zen style, and interiors follow the Japanese minimalistic aesthetic,” Naruewan says.

For those seeking balance and rejuvenation, wellness-focused villas offer spa suites, meditation salas, yoga terraces, and holistic programmes, particularly in destinations like Koh Samui where detox and renewal are front and centre.
Sustainability may not be the headline, but it’s increasingly embedded in villa design. Solar panels, rainwater harvesting and green roofs are becoming standard, while natural materials like wood and stone anchor villas to their natural settings.
“A more holistic approach to design is what’s needed now, something that blends with the environment and location.
Maintenance and operation also
play a big role,” says DeSouza. “When it comes to sustainability, for me it’s about creating something with permanence and intention, and that’s what I aim to build.”
Technology, meanwhile, seamlessly elevates comfort to new levels. Smart systems quietly manage lighting, climate, and entertainment, turning the villa into a haven of indulgence and convenience.
VILLAS AS INVESTMENTS
No longer confined to lavish holidays and private escapes, today’s villas have become sought-after assets. Developers across Thailand are reimagining properties by offering professional
management programmes that cover everything from rentals and guest services to maintenance and security, turning villas into both personal retreats for owners and income-generating properties.
Phuket, in particular, attracts investors who spend part of the year in their villas before renting them out or selling them for a good return on investment.
“Phuket is very close to Dubai’s markets, so many investors have come in. Most are driven by investment. They might stay for a few months, and rent it out for the rest of the time or sell it for a return after a couple of years,” Naruewan says.
Today, villas serve as both lifestyle statements and strategic portfolio moves, blending pleasure with profitability. As Dean-Smith puts it: “People want their own house with a private pool, and villas will continue to grow as investment opportunities, increasingly seen as more substantial and desirable than condominiums.”
THE NEW VILLA CULTURE
When asked what defines the new villa culture, experts in ultra-luxury real estate agree on one thing: there’s no single blueprint.
Some people want beachfront access, others prefer in-land retreats. But what unites them is a desire for
Today’s villas cater to a range of lifestyles and aspirations – from wellness sanctuaries to social hubs, from architectural statements to serene havens
stylish, practical homes that are in harmony with their surroundings. Think energy-efficient layouts, glass with minimal solar impact, and expansive windows that flood rooms with light and air, reducing the need for air-conditioning.
“People used to think villas had to be on the seafront or a mountain, but actually they can be anywhere. Developers are creating villas that celebrate the uniqueness of each location,” Naruewan says.
Convenience has also become the new hallmark of luxury. At resorts
like Anantara, beachfront or beachaccess pool villas are in highest demand – not just for the views, but for the sheer indulgence of stepping straight from pool to sea.
The result is a new villa culture shaped by diversity. Today’s villas cater to a range of lifestyles and aspirations – from wellness sanctuaries to social hubs, from architectural statements to serene havens. What unites them is their dual purpose: private homes that double as luxury experiences – and increasingly, as savvy investments.

Escape into barefoot luxury in the serene hillside of Chaweng Noi
Perched majestically on Chaweng Noi’s hillside, Keeree Tara Villa Koh Samui is a sanctuary where the ocean’s gentle symphony meets the caress of tropical breezes – a luxury retreat brimming with effortless style, soulful design, and sundrenched serenity.
More than a home away from home, Keeree Tara is a lifestyle, where the warmth of Thai hospitality and design meets the opulence and sophistication of Middle Eastern elegance. Step through its doors and the ordinary melts away in an instant. This is not merely a place to stay, but a sanctuary where every moment offers precious feelings that linger long in the memory.
The architectural design feels like an enchanting story written in stone and glass. Layered facades rise in harmony with the landscape, while glass walls dissolve the boundary between indoors and out. Rooftop gardens overflow with greenery, softening the bold geometry of contemporary design, and every level of the villa is angled toward the sea, making the horizon itself one of its most striking
features. From the moment you step onto the terrace, Chaweng Bay unfolds like a private stage.
Yet beauty here isn’t just about appearances; it flows through the space as a living harmony. A 20-metre infinity pool seems to melt into the Gulf of Thailand, its sunken lounge drawing guests into unhurried conversations beneath a canvas of blue sky. Terraces transform into theatres for sunset cocktails, the wine cellar beckons for leisurely tastings, and the villa’s cinema and game lounge make even the quietest evenings feel magical. Every corner is both inviting and intentional, designed to inspire comfort without compromising on elegance.
The soul of Keeree Tara, however, shines in the heartfelt way it cares for guests. The team – from private chef, to butler, and wellness gurus – moves with a discreet choreography, anticipating every desire with quiet grace. One evening, you might discover a feast of freshly grilled seafood waiting by the pool; a morning may begin with yoga at sunrise, mats laid out on a deck overlooking the Gulf. For some, the villa becomes a stage for celebrations – think festive dinners and fireworks lighting up the bay on New Year’s Eve – while for others, it is a sanctuary of stillness, where spa rituals and quiet mornings gently restore balance to life.
The private spa, carved into the hillside, is a world of its own. A rock-framed Jacuzzi, steam room, and massage suites make it easy to sink into serenity. Guests staying more than a few nights are welcomed with a complimentary massage and a gentle invitation to slow down. The gym, framed by a curtain of tropical greenery, invites guests to move in a setting where wellness feels natural rather than forced. Even the bedrooms follow this rhythm of care, each suite opening toward the sea, with kingsized beds, private terraces, and bathtubs perfect for lingering soaks.
What truly sets Keeree Tara apart is a design that flows harmoniously with the landscape.
Smart home technology quietly disappears into the background, every view feels framed like a gorgeous painting, and the villa itself seems to breathe with its surroundings. Sustainable elements at Keeree Tara are no mere afterthought but seamlessly integrated into the villa’s design. Eco-conscious features appear where they make sense, enhancing both function and beauty – from rooftop gardens that naturally cool the suites to energy-smart systems that operate quietly in the background. Here, green living feels practical, purposeful, and entirely intuitive rather than imposed. The greater goal is to build with permanence,
creating homes that stand the test of time while minimising environmental impact.
Keeree Tara’s attention to detail earned it the 2023 DOT Property Award for “Best Ultra-Luxury Villa Architectural Design”. For those wishing to experience the villa firsthand, nightly stays begin at 59,000++ baht per night, with ownership from 198 million baht.

SOULFUL NEW YEAR IN ASIA: From Sunsets to Starlight
Trade fireworks for temple chants, star-filled skies and timeless rituals to invite a gentler start to 2026
While the rest of the world greets New Year with dazzling fireworks and street parties, East Asia brings something different – a gentler welcome of sacred rituals, timeless landscapes and moments of stillness that linger long after midnight has passed.
From the lotus ponds of Angkor Wat to the candlelit Wat Pho temple, from the misty peak of Hong Kong’s Tai Mo Shan to the majestic Mekong River in Luang Prabang, these destinations invite travellers to step away from fireworks and fanfare
and surrender to deeper reflection. Here, champagne is traded for dramatic sunsets and dawns, while the passage of time flows with the gentle rhythms of nature.
Whether cruising in a Phnom Penh riverboat, stargazing from the slopes of Chiang Dao, or paddling Samui’s calm seas, the New Year experience is less about spectacle and more about presence. Each place offers its own kind of renewal – an invitation to pause, breathe and enter the year ahead with clarity.
SUKHOTHAI BEST PLACE FOR SUNSET
The historic town of Sukhothai in northern Thailand greets the year’s turn with a radiant crescendo. Head to Wat Mahathat, in the heart of Sukhothai Historical Park, to catch the last sunset of the year. The beauty of the ancient ruins add gravity to a glorious scene as the sun dips behind Wat Mahathat. As its final rays touch the temple, the seated Buddha’s gentle gaze encourages you to pause and let the passing year settle within you.
The magic of twilight invites you to wander through Sukhothai Historical Park, where 13th-century pagodas, lotus ponds and laterite walls melt into shadow under the night sky. Lanterns flicker as if the ancient kingdom is breathing with new life. While some visitors reflect quietly by the ponds, others saunter slowly under the stars, carrying unspoken hopes for the year ahead.
BANGKOK BEST PLACE FOR REVERENCE AND RITUAL
Although famous for countdown fireworks and lively celebrations, Bangkok offers havens of serenity for those seeking mindfulness over merrymaking. As the last sunset of the year washes over the Chao Phraya River, slip away to a hidden rooftop bar like the Eagle Nest for an elevated experience. Towering beside the River of Kings, the Temple of Dawn suddenly dazzles against the orange sky. This is your cue to rise above the countdown crowds for a bird’s-eye view, swapping noise for stillness as the river glides into a new year.
Bangkok’s spiritual heart beats with the sound of temple bells at midnight. At Wat Pho, monks chant blessings, while atop the Golden Mount of Wat Saket silence and prayer replace fireworks. Joining these rituals feels more than just ceremonial – it’s a gentle way of stepping into the New Year with gratitude and calm, immersed in Thailand’s timeless spirit.
CHIANG MAI
BEST PLACE FOR STARGAZING
Doi Chiang Dao, a little over an hour from Chiang Mai city centre, offers a soulful way to welcome the New Year under an endless canopy of stars. As the final hours of December slip away, the Milky Way arcs across the sky, heralding boundless potential and adventure. Wide decks at Putoh, a private lodge at the base of Chiang Dao mountain, are specially designed for skygazing. Or retreat to Phu Pha Hat Plantation, where the absence of artificial light showcases constellations in dazzling clarity.
For a higher vantage point, the San Pa Kia Highland Agricultural Station offers camping with panoramic horizons. Several resorts here are recognised as “dark sky properties”, including Daraga Chiang Dao, ensuring minimal light pollution. For adventurous visitors, a trek to Doi Chiang Dao’s summit rewards you with a stunning nocturnal light show. Here, the year begins not with noise, but with timeless illumination.
SINGAPORE
BEST FOR NIGHT WALKS
If you prefer reflection over revelry, Singapore’s Botanic Gardens offer a mindful retreat. By night, the UNESCO World Heritage Site glimmers under soft lights, perfect for quiet, meditative strolls beneath towering trees. Stop at Swan Lake and lift your gaze to the glittering galaxies overhead. Singapore skies may not be the darkest, but in the stillness of the Gardens, each star feels like a signal to pause, breathe and begin again. Instead of toasting the New Year with champagne, let your footsteps set the rhythm to reconnect with nature as you leave the old year behind.
MINDFUL COUNTDOWNS
SAMUI
BEST FOR DRIFTING INTO THE NEW YEAR
On Koh Samui, Thailand’s beach paradise, New Year’s Eve is usually the cue for champagne toasts at finedining tables or private soirees in glittering pool villas. Yet the celebration can also begin with balance, clarity and calm. Instead of parties and fireworks, the island offers gentler and more soulful ways to usher in 2026. As the afternoon wanes, paddle out from the calm shore of Taling Ngam or Lipa Noi to watch the sun dip behind the Angthong Archipelago and paint the Gulf of Thailand in golden hues. Time slows as you drift quietly over the serene surface. Beginners might want to opt for the even calmer waters of Bo Phut or Choeng Mon beaches.
Or head to Maenam Beach, where the relaxed, open stretch gives you space to float and watch the sky soften from crimson to violet. Each paddle stroke becomes a meditative exercise as the sea mirrors the colours of transition. At first light, welcome the year with yoga on the soft sand, where the sea breeze carries a promise of renewal.
HONG KONG
BEST PLACE TO GREET THE DAWN
For those seeking a serene start to 2026, Tai Mo Shan – Hong Kong’s tallest peak at 957 metres – offers a soothing balm after fireworks and wild parties. Armed with a hot drink and a headlamp, make your way up the winding hillside, the chill of the night air sharpening your senses as the
city sleeps far below. From the summit, watch the New Year quietly rise as the horizon spills gold over ridges and clouds, turning the familiar skyline into a heavenly realm. Skyscrapers emerge from the haze as if waking in the soft dawn, inviting a mindful beginning to the year.
LUANG PRABANG
MEKONG FAREWELL
In Luang Prabang, the New Year countdown makes way for more meditative celebrations. As the junglecloaked mountains darken, step onto a wooden boat for a lantern-lit dinner cruise down the Mekong River. Fine local cuisine is served as the river mirrors the fading light, each ripple carrying the weight of the old year downstream.
At dawn, the town awakens to a different tempo. Streets spring to life as Buddhist monks move in single file, alms bowls held against their saffron robes. Locals kneel with offerings, awaiting blessings for the year ahead. Joining the morning alms ritual in the former royal capital is a moving experience, where generosity and gratitude greet the first light of the year.
SIEM REAP
BEYOND SUNSET AND BEFORE SUNRISE
In Siem Reap, where Angkor Wat takes centre stage, the passage of time is written in ancient stones – beyond sunset and before sunrise. At the Western Moat Embankment, the temple’s silhouette softens against a sky painted in gold and crimson, while quiet village paths reveal intimate vignettes of daily life winding down. For solitude, the far bank of Srah Srang offers reflections that seem to hold the moment in eternity.
Crowds usually gather at Angkor’s lotus ponds to catch the first rays of the year. However, for spiritual renewal, head beyond the popular sunrise hotspot. Stroll through the East Gate, where morning light trickles down the empty stone corridors, or stand amid the towers of Prasat Kravan – a scene steeped in silent meditation. At Pre Rup Temple, the rising sun ignites the red sandstone, a jaw-dropping spectacle that feels both ancient and immediate.
MINDFUL COUNTDOWNS
PHUKET
SUNSET, SAND AND STILLNESS
Renowned for its nightlife and beachside countdowns, Phuket also offers tranquil corners for a more soulful start to the year. On New Year’s Eve, skip the throngs at Patong and head to Nai Harn Beach, where soft sands embrace the southern bay. Here, the Andaman Sea laps gently as the sun sinks, painting the sky amber and rose. With friends nearby and a chilled drink in hand, it’s a moment made for a meaningful celebration.
For an even more secluded escape, Ao Sane offers a hidden cove, perfect for a twilight picnic. Or climb to the Windmill Viewpoint, where the Phuket coastline stretches gracefully and the horizon feels endless. As fireworks light the skies, these quiet havens offer space for reflection and gratitude, a reminder that the year can begin not with noise, but with intention.
PHNOM PENH
FLOWING INTO A NEW START
New Year’s Eve in Phnom Penh is often about festivities and fireworks on the waterfront, but Cambodia’s capital also offers celebrations in tune with the river’s quiet rhythm. As the sun softens, board a wooden boat at the point where the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers meet and watch the city recede as you drift by stilt houses, golden pagodas and fishermen casting their last nets of the year. The cruise unfolds at an unhurried pace. River breezes carry the scent of the water, and the fading light floods the horizon in fiery hues. Here, you can share a quiet meal, raise a toast, or simply sit and watch the old year ebb with the current.
CHANTING INTO THE NEW YEAR
In Thailand, New Year’s Eve is a time for fireworks and countdown parties, but also for a ritual steeped in serenity: the midnight chant. Known in Thai as Suad Mon Kham Pee, it begins just before midnight as monks take their seats before rows of candles and lead the crowd in rhythmic Pali verses. Voices slowly rise, filling temple grounds with a vibe of solemnity and renewal.
Thais believe the ritual washes away misfortune and blesses the year ahead. You don’t need to be Buddhist to take part. Listening to the melodic chant, lighting a candle, or simply sitting among the faithful can be transformative.
Temples across the country host the ceremony, each with its own unique atmosphere. In Bangkok, Wat Pho, home to the Reclining Buddha, gleams with lantern light, while Wat Saket’s Golden Mount offers sweeping views of the city as midnight bells toll. In Chiang Mai, Wat Phra Singh glows beneath its golden Lanna spires. And in Sukhothai, the chant begins at Wat Traphang Thong before carrying across the ruins of the former capital –linking present devotion with ancient history.
More than just a holiday, Thailand is an immersion in vibrant flavours, fragrances, textures, and traditions that stay with you long after your plane takes off. From tangy tom yum to the calming scent of jasmine, from handwoven fabrics to playful miniature tuk-tuks, there’s an abundance of ways to carry a piece of the country home. Souvenirs from Thailand are not mere trinkets – they are stories, experiences, and memories in tangible form. Perhaps that is why browsing markets and shops across Thailand feels less like shopping and more like storytelling.
FLAVOURS OF THAILAND: EDIBLE MEMORIES
Thai cuisine is one of the country’s greatest ambassadors, and edible souvenirs allow those flavours to linger long after your trip. The variety ranges from simple snacks to artisanal creations, each reflecting Thailand’s bold and layered flavours.
Cooking kits have become a favourite among travellers who want to recreate the magic of Thai meals at home. Neatly packed with curry pastes, sauces, and spices in just the right proportions, these kits make it easy to whip up dishes like Pad Thai, Boat Noodles, Tom Yum Goong, Massaman, or Green Curry. Even novices in the kitchen find themselves surprised at how close they can get to the authentic taste.
For more confident cooks, curry pastes make excellent souvenirs. Each paste is essentially the soul of a curry, crafted with a blend of herbs and spices particular to dishes like Panang, Green Curry, or Tom Kha. These compact packages slip easily into luggage for you to unlock the complexity of Thai cooking at home.
Thailand’s love of flavour also shines in its spices and dried herbs. Galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, holy basil, and dried chillies are staples of Thai kitchens, and their dried forms travel well. Some brands have even turned them into fun gifts by presenting them in tiny jars designed as charms or keychains.
Beyond the pantry, sauces tell their own story of Thai dining.

A selection of classic Thai sauces
Fish sauce, soy sauce, chilli sauces, and seafood dips are the everyday anchors of Thai meals, enhancing everything from omelettes to grilled meats. Packed in travelsized bottles, they bring a splash of Thailand to your kitchen back home. Not all edible souvenirs require cooking. Thai instant noodles, particularly in Tom Yum Goong flavour, have developed a cult following. Their balance of sour, spicy, and savoury notes makes them more than just convenience food – they bring a bite of Thai nostalgia in minutes.
For a healthier treat, dried fruits like mango, coconut, tamarind, and durian make
colourful, lightweight gifts. Their cheerful packaging mirrors the burst of natural sweetness inside. And when it comes to beverages, Thailand’s signature orange-hued Thai tea remains iconic, while coffee from the northern highlands highlights the country’s agricultural richness. More recently, Thai craft chocolatiers such as Siamaya have pushed the boundaries by infusing bars with local flavours –everything from Massaman curry and Tom Yum to mango with chilli salt. Each square is less a sweet and more an edible postcard.
SCENTS OF SIAM: AROMATIC TRADITIONS AND REMEDIES
If taste is one way to remember Thailand, scent is another. Thai culture has long embraced the therapeutic and restorative qualities of fragrances, whether through herbs, oils, or rituals. These aromatic souvenirs are compact reminders of the country’s holistic traditions.
Herbal inhalers may puzzle first-time visitors, but they quickly become a travel essential. Combining menthol, camphor, eucalyptus, and other herbs, they are small, affordable, and unexpectedly refreshing. Many travellers discover that they’re not

Herbal inhalers may puzzle firsttime visitors, but they quickly become a travel essential
just quick remedies for dizziness or congestion – they’re exhilarating bursts of clarity in a humid climate.
Similarly, herbal lozenges double as medicinal treats. Indian gooseberry lozenges, sharp with tartness, sit alongside sweet-bitter liquorice, warming ginger, and plum. Each has its own personality, offering both comfort and novelty.
Balms, meanwhile, are a quintessential Thai item – compact, versatile, and multipurpose. Whether rubbed on insect bites, sore muscles, or temples for refreshment, they are staples in Thai households and perfect souvenirs for travellers.
Thailand’s climate has also given rise to cooling innovations. Menthol-infused body powders and cooling tissues are ingenious
responses to tropical heat. Applied after shower or tucked into bags, they make hot days bearable, and often become souvenirs travellers never expected to buy.
For those seeking a spa ritual at home, herbal compress balls provide the experience of Thai massage in miniature. Filled with lemongrass, kaffir lime, tamarind, and camphor, they are steamed and pressed against the skin, releasing oils that soothe both body and mind.
Essential oils distilled from Thai botanicals are another elegant way to bottle the country’s natural beauty. From jasmine’s sweetness to the depth of champaca, from the sensuality of ylang-ylang to the clean brightness of lemongrass, each oil distils a fragment of Thailand’s landscape into a small vial.

WEARABLE THAILAND: FASHION AND FABRICS
Souvenirs don’t have to be small trinkets; some of the most memorable keepsakes are the ones you can wear. Thai textiles and accessories balance practicality with artistry, transforming cultural heritage into everyday style.
Elephant-print pants may have started as practical temple wear, but they have become playful travel icons. Lightweight and colourful, they fold easily into luggage and evoke memories of markets, temples, and backpacking adventures.
Fabric bags offer a subtler link to Thailand. Handmade and often crafted from regional textiles, they come in countless forms – from coin purses to handbags. Northern leaf-print patterns, Southern batik designs, and Isaan silk each
tell stories of their origins while remaining useful day to day.
At the higher end, Thai silk scarves remain timeless. Their lustre and lightness makes them as versatile as they are beautiful, suitable for both winter layers and summer breezes. Their designs, often inspired by flowers or natural motifs, make each scarf feel like a unique keepsake.
For something even more artisanal, batik and handwoven cotton showcase intricate traditional skills. Batik involves painting wax designs before dyeing,
while cotton weaving begins with planting and harvesting fibres before spinning them into thread. Both crafts embody patience and tradition, making each item as much a story as an accessory. Jewellery, too, speaks of regional diversity. Chiang Mai’s silver reflects hilltribe craftsmanship, Surin’s granulated silver (pragueam) is heirloom-worthy, and Nakhon Si Thammarat’s nielloware gleams with meticulous artistry. Each piece embodies local identity while offering a timeless elegance.

SOUVENIRS FROM THAILAND
THAI HANDICRAFTS: EVERYDAY ART FROM RURAL THAILAND Thailand’s countryside has long nurtured crafts shaped by natural resources and rural life. These handicrafts, once tools of daily living, have become prized souvenirs for their authenticity and artistry.
Baskets and mats, woven from bamboo, rattan, or reeds, were once purely functional. Today, they are reimagined as home décor or fashion accessories. Miniature baskets hold snacks in restaurants, while larger designs function as handbags for urban professionals.
Ceramics have an even deeper legacy. Sukhothai’s Sangkhalok pottery, once traded across Asia, has been revived with modern forms and uses. Vases, coffee cups, and tableware marry tradition with practicality, while figurines reflect history with contemporary flair. Wood carving, centred in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, offers another glimpse into rural artistry. Elephants, birds, and small figurines carved from local wood are simple yet enduring. Though artisans are fewer today, each piece speaks to craftsmanship passed down the generations with care.

ICONS OF THAILAND: SYMBOLS TO TREASURE
Certain souvenirs capture Thailand in instantly recognisable forms. Miniature tuktuks, replicas of Wat Arun’s prang, khon masks, Muay Thai (Thai boxing) pants, and Thai dolls distil cultural identity into playful keepsakes. Whether displayed on shelves or gifted to children, they carry the joy of recognition.
Clockwise from Top Left Khon masks as cultural souvenirs
Sukhothai ceramics
Modern designers, however, are pushing these icons further. Temple motifs now appear on ceramics and notebooks, while Thai script adorns aprons and textiles. Even the humble pha khao ma (traditional checked fabrics) and pha thung (traditional wrap-around skirt) – once every day checked fabrics – have been reimagined as chic bags. Some designs have even gained cult status overseas, proving that Thai creativity resonates far beyond its borders.
A LIVING MEMORY

memories, tangible fragments of culture carried across borders. A sachet of curry paste, a jar of balm, or a handwoven scarf encapsulates a taste, a scent, or a texture that instantly recalls a journey.
As you wander through markets, department stores, and boutiques, souvenirs transform into personal stories – choices about which part of Thailand you want to take home, share, or relive. And in that way, they extend the journey, keeping Thailand’s vibrant essence alive long after your return flight has landed.
WHERE TO BUY
Souvenirs can be found in department stores and small local/ artisanal shops across Thailand, as well as at speciality outlets in Bangkok such as Neighbourmart (Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC), Charoen Krung Road), the Pop-up Store at Siam Center, Artè Bangkok at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, and The Chonabod (www.facebook.com/theChonabod). Each offers a curated selection that highlights the creativity and craftsmanship of Thai makers.

Each dish reflects a decades-old infusion of southern spices with Teochew techniques, turning every bite into a story, each aroma into a memory and every meal into a shared celebration of heritage, flavour and family.

BANGKOK AIRWAYS POSITIONS TRAT AIRPORT AS AVIATION HUB FOR EASTERN THAILAND
Bangkok Airways Public Company
Limited is pressing ahead with a major upgrade of Trat Airport, focusing on strengthening infrastructure to meet growing passenger demand as tourism recovers post-COVID. European travellers, a key market for Thailand’s eastern seaboard, continues to be the main driver of this growth.
The first phase of the 400-millionbaht upgrade is scheduled for completion in quarter three of 2026. Key upgrades include:
• Extending the runway from 1,800 metres to 2,000 metres
• Constructing new aircraft parking bays to accommodate up to three medium-small jets (A320, A319, B737, B717, ERJ145), or a mix of two turboprop aircraft (ATR72, YS-11) and two mediumsized jets
• Upgrading and expanding the passenger terminal from 2,100 to 3,400 square metres, boosting annual capacity to 250,000 passengers
Bangkok Airways President Mr. Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth highlighted Trat’s importance in the airline’s long-term strategy.
“Trat is a key tourist destination in Thailand’s eastern region and remains
especially popular among international travellers, notably from Europe – a core customer base for Bangkok Airways. We are already seeing clear signs of recovery, with over 40,427 passengers served in the first half of this year, and we expect even more during the upcoming high season. The Trat Airport development project will strengthen competitiveness by supporting new domestic and international routes, linking major tourist destinations and economic centres,” he said.
He added that the upgrades will enhance passenger convenience, strengthen codeshare connectivity, and prepare the airport to welcome flights from other international carriers in the future, positioning Trat Airport as a strategic aviation hub for Thailand’s eastern region.
Located on 1,600 rai (256 hectares) in Khao Saming district, Trat Airport lies about 35 kilometres from downtown Trat and just 17km from the Koh Chang ferry pier. Bangkok Airways currently operates two daily roundtrip flights between Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Trat, with plans to increase to three flights daily from October to meet peak-season demand.
