For travellers seeking a dash of mystery with their adventure, Koh Tao’s abandoned resort hike delivers. Starting near Sairee Beach, the trail winds through village lanes before climbing into dense jungle towards Laem Thian on the island’s eastern edge. It’s about an hour’s hike—rugged, rewarding, and refreshingly off the beaten path. At the top, you’ll find the ghostly remains of a once-grand resort: bungalows overtaken by vines, verandas open to the sea breeze, silence broken only by cicadas.

If you haven’t yet heard of Pig Island, that’s part of its charm.

Officially called Koh Madsūm, this speck of paradise off Samui’s southern coast has become the island’s most heartwarming discovery. The tale begins when pigs first arrived from the mainland after locals brought them to the island; they continued to breed and soon became a magnet for tourists during the COVID pandemic. Fast-forward, and the pigs now paddle in turquoise shallows, lounge under coconut

A day in Ang Thong National Marine Park feels like entering another world. This protected cluster of 42 islands northwest of Samui brims with limestone cliffs, emerald lagoons, and timeless beaches.

Explore secret caves and jade coves by kayak where monkeys call from above.

Climb Koh Mae Koh’s viewpoint for sweeping cinematic vistas, then snorkel Koh Tai Plao’s coral reefs alive with colour. Between adventures, pause for a beachside lunch beneath the palms, waves lapping at your feet. Every moment here blends exploration with serenity.

Just a ten-minute longtail ride from Koh Tao lies Koh Nangyuan—three tiny islands linked by ribbons of white sand that look almost too beautiful to be real. The water here is so clear it feels like floating through glass. Divers descend into a kaleidoscope of coral at Red Rock and Green Rock, while snorkellers drift lazily through the Japanese Gardens, a popular dive site surrounded by butterflyfish and blue tangs that will take your breath away.

After a morning in the water, follow the shaded trail to the island’s famous viewpoint. The short climb rewards you with one of Thailand’s most iconic panoramas—a sweep of turquoise sea and ivory sandbars that seem painted by hand.

Koh Nangyuan manages to feel exclusive yet unpretentious, a sanctuary where time slows and nature takes the spotlight.

Wai Kua (Reef squid curry)

On Koh Samui, mornings begin with a shimmer. The sea turns silver as the sun rises, and if you look closely near the rocky shores, you’ll catch small flashes of movement — reef squid, known locally as wai, gliding gracefully through the shallows. For generations, these delicate creatures have sustained island families, both as a livelihood and as the centrepiece of one of Samui’s most beloved dishes: Wai Kua. Unlike the typical southern Thai curry, this fragrant white curry carries no heavy dose of chilli. Instead, it begins, as many Samui recipes do, with coconut. The milk is pressed fresh each morning from coconuts grown in the island’s fertile groves. The process is beautifully analogue: the coconut flesh is grated by hand, then wrapped in muslin and squeezed until the thick, creamy liquid runs free. That first press, rich and silky, is the secret to Wai Kua’s velvety texture and natural sweetness.

Into that fragrant coconut cream goes an aromatic blend that defines Samui’s coastal cuisine. There’s kapi, a fermented krill paste that is salty, savoury, and briny all at once.

Then come the bright, green notes of kaffir lime leaves, the citrusy lift of lemongrass, and the gentle bite of shallots and fresh red chilli. A touch of tamarind pulp (makaam piak) is stirred in at the end, adding a soft tang that rounds out the dish’s richness.

The star, of course, is the squid itself. Freshly caught wai are cleaned, sliced, and gently simmered until tender and springy. The squid absorbs the coconut’s sweetness while releasing

The squid is often pulled from the sea that very morning, the coconut milk pressed from fruit grown just inland, and the krill paste made by hand in small seaside villages where families still sun-dry tiny shrimp along the shore. It’s a dish shaped entirely by proximity — to the sea, the soil, and the people who work both.

Finding Wai Kua today can feel like uncovering a secret. You won’t find it on resort menus or in tourist cafés, but at local eateries tucked behind coconut plantations or near the fishing piers of Hua Thanon and Mae Nam. Each cook adds a personal touch — a bit more chilli here, a hint of palm sugar there — but the essence never wavers.

At a coconut farm inland, you might see women sitting in the shade, hand-grating coconuts as they chat softly. Down by the shore, fishermen unload baskets of fresh squid. These simple, parallel rituals — land and sea in quiet collaboration — are what give Wai Kua its soul.

ear traveller, welcome to my home. I am not your usual storyteller. I have no voice, no pen, and yet my tale stretches across centuries. I am the very first coconut tree to grow on this island, my roots deep in its rich soil, my fronds swaying under the same tropical sun you now enjoy.

Long before your infinity pool glistened at sunset and the sound of champagne corks echoed along the beach, Koh Samui was a quiet emerald in the Gulf of Thailand. From my perch on this sandy shore, I watched time shape the island you now adore.

I remember when there were no roads, no resorts—just unadulterated nature. The sea shimmered turquoise under the midday sun; its scent of salt and promise carried on the breeze. The calls of seabirds and the rustle of my leaves were the soundtrack of life. The first humans I saw were humble fisherfolk, their rickety wooden boats chugging across the Thai Gulf. By lantern light they mended their nets, laughing under the stars. The island was their sanctuary, its bounty of coconuts, fish, and freshwater sustaining a simple way of life.

Over the centuries, new faces arrived.

Chinese traders sailed in on monsoon winds, their ships heavy with ceramics; some still sleep beneath the waves, their porcelain treasures unearthed centuries later. The people of Samui today carry these rich lineages in their veins. Every scent of Thai spices simmering in a pot, every prayer at a temple fair tells the story of cultural fusion that I, the old coconut, have witnessed.

Even the island’s name carries mystery.

Was it from the Hainanese word Se-Mui, meaning “first port”? Or from the Tamil Samay, meaning “waves and wind”?

Perhaps from the humble mui tree that once grew wild here? I’ve heard all these whispered over the years as I’ve swayed in the monsoon breeze. The truth remains as elusive as a seashell’s song—but maybe that’s part of the magic of this island.

Features | Samui’s first coconut I have seen darker days too. During World War II, Japanese soldiers briefly tread on these shores. I watched silently as the island held its breath. Yet the coconuts endured.

We always do. Through storms and wars, our trunks bend, but never break.

For centuries, we coconuts were Samui’s lifeblood. My descendants spread across the island, their fruit pressed into oil, their water drunk by generations. The island seal still bears our likeness: Samui surrounded by sea, crowned with palms. The island’s own motto celebrates us: “Beautiful coral, clear waters, white sandy beaches, plenty of coconuts.”

Then came the 1980s. Ah, the era of wanderlust, when barefoot travellers arrived with guitars slung over their backs, staying in bamboo huts under my shade for just 40 baht a night. They came seeking sunsets, saltwater, and freedom. The island began to buzz with new energy—no longer just a fishing community, but a haven for dreamers. Slowly, the world took notice.

hen visitors think of Thailand’s national sport, they picture the heart-pounding spectacle of Muay Thai: rhythmic drums, the roar of the crowd, and fighters exchanging kicks and punches under bright lights. But there’s a lesser-known chapter of Thai martial heritage that predates the modern ring. To find it, you must look south, to Surat Thani province, where an ancient martial art called Muay Chaiya took root — a style that shaped Muay Thai itself, yet remains a hidden gem even among locals.

Centuries ago, Siamese warriors often faced enemies with nothing but their bodies as weapons. They needed

an unarmed combat system that could fend off sword-wielding invaders in seconds. From this necessity arose Muay Boran, or “ancient boxing,” the root of all Thai martial arts. While records of Muay Boran’s early history were lost when Burmese forces sacked Ayutthaya in 1767, what survived were its branches — unique regional fighting styles developed across Siam.

In the northeast, Muay Korat became known for its thunderous punches; in the central plains, Muay Lopburi earned fame for its clever feints and agile footwork. And in the far south, nestled in the quiet district of Chaiya, a different style emerged — one that emphasised defense, agility, and grace: Muay Chaiya.

Features | Muay Chaiya THE LEGEND OF POR TAN MA Muay Chaiya’s story is inseparable from its most legendary teacher. History and folklore tell us of a Siamese warrior who fought bravely for the royal army. Weary of war, he left the capital and journeyed to the southern province of Surat Thani, where he entered the monkhood. Known affectionately as Por Tan Ma, he passed his knowledge to locals in Chaiya. Among his students was Kade Sriyapai, who became the grandmaster most responsible for popularising Muay Chaiya during the reign of King Rama V in the late 19th century.

But Muay Chaiya was never just about fighting. If anything, it was more about

Fighters train until every stance becomes second nature. One of its most famous moves is called Sua Laak Haang — “the tiger dragging its tail.” The name alone evokes Muay Chaiya’s poetry: a fighting style inspired by nature, practised with precision and grace.

RITUALS OF A WARRIOR The drama of Muay Chaiya begins before the first strike. Each fighter performs a wai kru ceremony to honour teachers and ancestors. Tradition dictates that the boxer faces the sun so that it shines behind him — a gesture believed to bring luck and ensure victory. The ritual once included tracing the opponent’s name in the dirt and stomping on it, signaling that the time for talk was over. From then on, only movement spoke.

In its heyday, Muay Chaiya had one of the

most dramatic initiation rites in martial history: the nang krok (sitting on a mortar) test. To join the ranks of true warriors, a student would sit on a stone mortar, his face powdered white. Three opponents attacked simultaneously.

If even a smudge of powder appeared on their fists, the student failed and returned to train harder. To fend them all off without a mark was the ultimate badge of honour.

What began as one woman’s quest to heal herself has blossomed into a movement that redefines wellness: authentic, sustainable, and deeply Thai.

efore I even looked up, it was the air that drew me in—rich with the grounding aroma of plai (cassumunar ginger), kamin chan (turmeric), pandan leaves, and herb-infused coconut oil—notes so gentle and grounding that my entire body seemed to exhale. I said out loud “This is the most relaxing interview I’d ever conducted.” The conversation felt less like work and more like a therapeutic session, the fragrance of Thailand’s herbal heritage wrapping itself around me like a warm embrace. Across from me sat Manee U-prasert, founder of Honey Rose—a Samuibased brand dedicated to reawakening the wisdom of traditional Thai medicine for a contemporary world. Her work, much like her presence, is a delicate balance of memory, healing, and intention.

“For me, plants and trees have always been my companions,” Manee said.

Growing up in Samui, she spent her childhood collecting herbs and spices the way other children collected toys. Her grandparents, like many islanders before hospitals arrived, relied almost entirely on the land’s natural pharmacy. This early intimacy with plants deepened years later when her father was diagnosed with cancer. Long days spent at Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok gave Manee both worry and time, so she enrolled in a course in traditional Thai medicine at the Development of Traditional Thai Medicine Foundation at the Public Health Ministry.

“I told myself, if I ever get sick, I want to know how to heal myself. Since I’m allergic to conventional antihistamines, I figured that nature had to be my first line of defence.”

It’s also important for Manee to create wellness that doesn’t just go on the skin or into the body—but also touches the earth.

From this philosophy, Honey Rose was born. At first, Manee dreamed of creating an herbal garden destination in the hills above Samui, where visitors could wander through lush terraces and learn about medicinal plants in situ. The land was abundant, but the remoteness proved a hurdle. “It was difficult for travellers to reach. It just didn’t work.” she explained.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced her to adapt. She moved her base into town, closer to both locals and tourists which turned out to be a serendipitous shift.

Accessibility brought new energy, and Honey Rose began producing a line of sustainable, coconut-based products—cold-pressed virgin coconut oil, liquid soaps, shower gels, massage oils, even mosquito repellents—all infused with Thai herbs and spices, all free from chemicals and synthetic fragrances.

“I wanted something that reflected Samui’s spirit,” Manee said. “Everyone sells coconuts here, but I combine them with herbal knowledge to make cosmetics and remedies that heal.”

It’s also important for Manee to create wellness that doesn’t just go on the skin or into the body—but also touches the earth.

Honey Rose runs refill stations to encourage customers to reuse containers. She works with an environmental protection group, collecting trash and sending it to a “trash bank,” on the island where it’s recycled into construction bricks strong enough to build football pitches and sports arenas.

And yet, she’s frank about the island’s ongoing challenge with waste. Samui produces around 200 tonnes of garbage daily. “The real issue is separation. Some hotels and communities are doing it, but without wider urgency, we still see piles of trash by the roads. It’s embarrassing for us when travellers see this.”

Perhaps the most captivating part of our conversation was her explanation of how Thai traditional medicine categorises food and herbs by taste—and how each flavour heals.

Her project Mieng Maitree (“Let Food Heal You”) invites visitors to sample bitesized snacks infused with Thai herbs, each with a purpose: sour to relieve constipation, sweet to restore energy, and creamy to nourish the nerves. It’s an education in flavour as therapy, one that reframes eating not as indulgence but as self-care.

During the pandemic, she reminded me, fa talai jone (Andrographis paniculata) was widely hailed as Thailand’s “green chiretta.”

For Manee, the key was using it fresh. “When the juices from the leaves touch the throat, that’s when it disinfects. But it can make the body cold, so I balance it with ginger, which is warming.”

Other remedies she prepares include smelling salts—without the harmful chemicals often used in mass-market varieties—and traditional herbal balls used in Thai massage. What struck me most was not the variety of her products or even the science behind them, but the simple truth she kept returning to: “Our ancestors understood how to live with herbs and spices as a preventative measure as well as for healing. If we learned to appreciate them the way they did, maybe we wouldn’t need to visit the hospital so often.”

Indeed, Thai herbs are often relegated to the kitchen, dismissed as mere

flavouring rather than curative. But in Manee’s view, kamin chan, plai, or pandan are as vital to daily health as they are to Thai curries or desserts. Today, Honey Rose’s products are not only used by local families but have found their way into spas, a local hospital, and luxury hotels on the island. Tourists adore her rose oil and rose soap, crafted with authentic beeswax instead of paraffin.

Students and visitors from around the world come to her learning centre to learn more about traditional medicine, joining workshops on herbal compresses or sampling herbal snacks.

And perhaps this is where her work becomes most meaningful for travellers: it offers a connection to the island beyond white sand and infinity pools. A massage oil infused with coconut, or a bit of a pandan-based snack, becomes a story that ties wellness, sustainability, and culture into a single, fragrant thread.

n Koh Samui, paradise sells itself. White sand, swaying palms, coconut cocktails, infinity pools. The kind of place where tourists come to forget that the real world exists. But scratch at the surface and you’ll find another story—one that doesn’t come with a glossy brochure or a welcome drink.

Naovarat “Nadee” Wannaprasert is not from Samui.

She came from the Central province of Angthong, a couple of hours away, on what was supposed to be just a holiday during the strange, hollow days of COVID. With no relatives here and no backup plan, she rented a motorbike and rode around aimlessly, taking in the island.

What she found wasn’t the postcard version. It was banana trees—cut, abandoned, left to rot on the side of the road like yesterday’s trash.

“I saw piles of stems everywhere,” she recalls. “People planted bananas only to shade their durian trees. Once the durians grew strong enough, the bananas were cut and discarded. It didn’t sit right with me.”

That chance observation was the beginning of a five-year odyssey—one that would turn her from visitor to community builder, and place Samui on the map for a rare kind of ecoentrepreneurship: banana-rope craft.

Back in Ang Thong, Nadee was no stranger to handicraft.

Her work there had earned the coveted 4-star OTOP (One Tambon One Product) certification. So when she returned to Samui, she carried, together with her curiosity, the skills and vision to give waste a second life.

The path wasn’t easy. “The first time I proposed banana-fibre weaving to local officials, they thought I was, literally, bananas,” she laughs. “Nobody knew me here.

They wondered who this woman was, telling them about banana stems.”

But Nadee is nothing if not persistent. She relocated to Samui in 2021, rented a home and a shopfront, and began lobbying for support. With help from Ang Thong labour officials, she finally convinced Surat Thani authorities to fund community training. Soon, villagers who had once dismissed the “mad” idea were learning to weave banana rope into everyday essentials.

The transition wasn’t without cultural hurdles. In Thailand, the Tani banana (Musa balbisiana)—whose fibres are known for strength—is shrouded in folklore. Some locals avoid planting it, believing it is inhabited by a female spirit named “Naang Tani”.

“In Ang Thong, Tani bananas are respected for their endurance,” says Nadee. “We use them for basketry. But on Samui, people hesitated because of old beliefs. It took time to show them the benefits.”

Once the locals saw how the leaves resisted tearing and how the fibres outlasted other natural materials, the mindset shifted.

The discarded tree became a resource, even a treasure.

Step into Nadee’s workshop today, and you’ll see how far one tree can go. Soap, paper, bags, even experimental cookies made from banana stem fibres—the possibilities

seem endless. The fibres, she explains, are second only to silk in strength. “One banana tree can become so many things,” she says, her eyes lighting up.

Among her proudest creations is a woven bag designed to carry kalamair, a sticky local sweet. The design nods to tradition while proving the versatility of banana rope in modern life.

Her commitment to zero-waste is uncompromising. Every part of the tree is used, and her products—unlike bamboo, water hyacinth, or krajood (bulrush)—don’t develop mold. With care, they last a decade or more.

The turning point came, thanks to another woman entrepreneur who invited Nadee to showcase her products at a local market. The response was overwhelming.

Soon after, a major department store placed bulk orders.

Her commitment to zero-waste is uncompromising. Every part of the tree is used, and her products—unlike bamboo, water hyacinth, or krajood (bulrush)—don’t develop mold.

“Hotels liked the products but hesitated at first,” Nadee recalls. “I promised them: no matter how big the order, I will deliver on time.

During COVID, we had a two-month deadline.

I finished in 45 days. That built trust.”

Word of mouth carried her work further than any online shop could. Tourists stumbled upon her workshop, then told others.

International journalists joined her hands-on workshops and left amazed that a banana tree could transform into soap, bags, or textiles.

Nadee doesn’t see her venture as hers alone. The women and men she trained on Samui continue to weave banana-rope products, generating income and reviving respect for local craft traditions.

“When I came here, people thought I was a scammer,” she admits. “But I stayed, worked hard, and shared my skills. I showed them this wasn’t about me—it was about giving value to what we already have.”

Her daughter, a chef, has since joined her on Samui, adding another layer of hospitality to the workshops. Guests now enjoy snacks and coffee while learning to weave, turning each session into a memory stitched with taste and craft.

“There were times I was in debt, times my relatives told me to stop,” she says.

“But I believed in the work. Nobody else was doing it. I wanted locals to believe in their own skills, to see their value.”

Today, her products are certified OTOP Premium and cherished by travellers seeking souvenirs with soul. But perhaps her greatest achievement lies in the invisible threads—linking Ang Thong to Samui, tradition to innovation, and waste to worth.

“Everyone has problems,” she says with a smile. “But if you carry positive energy inside and believe in yourself, anything is possible.”

On Samui, thanks to one determined woman and a discarded tree, that belief is now woven into baskets, bags, and beyond.

T

o the eyes of a visitor, Koh Samui is a postcard of paradise. Its beaches shimmer with white sand, coconut palms lean lazily over azure waters, and coral reefs stretch like underwater rainforests just beneath the waves. But if we pause, if we look more closely, we begin to see the fragile balance that keeps this island alive.

And we also see the threats that could unravel it.

Like so many islands around the world, Samui faces an overwhelming problem with waste, especially plastic. Plastic bottles and food containers wash ashore with every tide. Discarded nets lie tangled in the shallows, and single-use cups pile up behind markets and along roadsides.

Waste management here is a daunting task: the island’s infrastructure was never designed for the millions of visitors who now arrive each year.

The cost of this carelessness is most visible beneath the surface. Coral reefs, which take centuries to grow, are being shattered in seconds. Tourists stepping into shallow lagoons, fishermen dragging nets across seagrass beds, and plastics drifting in the current all leave their scars. Coral, though resilient, is not indestructible. Break it, and entire ecosystems unravel. Fish lose their breeding grounds. Turtles lose their feeding beds. The very reefs that protect Samui’s coastlines from storms begin to vanish.

And yet, there is hope. Hope born not of grand policies, but of local people—ordinary citizens with extraordinary determination.

One of them is Yupaporn Wanitcharoen.

Her story begins not with coral, but with cloth. When the world came to a standstill during the COVID-19 pandemic, Yupaporn’s hotel stood empty. Many might have despaired. She chose instead to search for meaning. After meditating on how best to serve her community, she remembered her love of textiles. She began learning the art of natural dyeing, using salt to draw pigments from leaves and flowers.

By chance, while being interviewed and photographed about her work on textiles by the sea, she discovered that seawater made the colours bloom more vividly. Each time she returned to soak her fabrics, she also noticed something else: the sheer volume of waste littering the shoreline. Plastic bottles, wrappers, fishing debris. Beauty and devastation, side by side.

That was her turning point.

She began working with other Samui residents tackling the waste problem in creative ways—some turning derelict trawlers into eco-friendly building bricks, others experimenting with solar-powered homes. But her heart was pulled most strongly toward the sea, and the corals silently suffering beneath the surface.

With guidance from Vinythai Company, together with the Coral Conservation Foundation who has over two decades of experience in coral restoration, Yupaporn joined a coral rehabilitation project on Laem Son beach. This stretch of coast is

rich in seagrass and marine turtles, yet it is unprotected. Fishermen and local workers often wade into the shallows to gather shrimp, crabs, and bivalves. Without realising it, their footsteps crush fragile coral colonies, and their nets tear apart the very structures that sustain marine life.

The work of rehabilitation is delicate, patient, and profoundly hopeful. Broken fragments of coral are collected and secured in PVC pipes, where they are nurtured until they grow strong enough to return to the reef. Over time, these fragments transform into thriving “fish apartments,” offering shelter and food for marine life.

“It’s important to show people that coral can come back,” Yupaporn says. “When they see fish return, they understand why protecting it matters.”

And it is not just locals who can help.

Visitors—those who travel across the world to experience Samui’s beauty—can play a direct role in its protection. Tourists are invited to join coral rehabilitation trips: collecting broken coral, releasing young colonies into four-to-seven-metre-deep waters, and witnessing firsthand the resilience of nature.

This is conservation at its most tangible.
