S. Dale High is the first to admit that he’s full of ideas. “Creativity, innovation, new ideas have always excited me,” he says. High has been a steward of improvement and innovation since the earliest days of his career, focusing on both the immediate and long-term needs of the City. He often asks himself and his team, “Will this be good for the City 100 years from now?” when deciding on the direction of a project. In the early 1970s, High was part of the team that led the rebuilding of Old Town Lancaster, which became a watershed in both his career and Downtown Lancaster’s revitalization. Rather than just tearing down the historic homes that were slated for demolition, High and his team rehabilitated the neighborhood, now one of the crowning jewels of the City.

“This is an opportunity,” he says. “When you see this sort of momentum in tough [economic] times and you think about where you can go in good times, I think it’s going to build value for investors. That’s why investors invest, because they think there’s opportunity. I think there’s opportunity in Lancaster.” An important part of High’s legacy is his focus on collaboration rather than competition. Leaders in both the private and public sectors need to come together, he says, to take risks, challenge the

What does High envision as the next step in Lancaster’s future?
Improving on what’s already in place, he says, and creating what he calls a “mosaic” of improved or expanded residential, cultural, dining, lodging, shopping, medical, and educational facilities, as well as increased walkability and more green space. He underscores the importance of diversity—cultural and ethnic diversity but also a diversity of ideas and voices adding to the fresh new tomorrow of Lancaster. Rest assured he will be a vital part of that future. He says: “I want to have made some difference for having lived. I want some legacy of having helped make a better community and helped make a better place. If I can help make this corner of the world a little better, then maybe my life will have been worthwhile.”
Since then, the High companies have helped build and renovate other downtown landmarks, including the Lancaster County Convention Center and Marriott at Penn Square. “When I look at the hotel and convention center, I see 175 direct jobs being created downtown,” High says. “Also I see a lot more visitors coming downtown and supporting restaurants and shops, in addition to providing many guest stays to other hotels. It’s also, I think, been an important catalyst for encouraging investment in the City.”
He adds, “The more we can do together, the more we can become.”
Dale has gotten so deeply involved in the community, he says, because, quite simply, it’s his home. But he also looks at Lancaster from a businessman’s perspective and sees a lot more potential for growth. Investors both in the City and beyond, he thinks, would be wise to take notice.

fresh faces Peace, Love, and Ramen After tasting the delicious ramen at Issei Noodle in Carlisle, we’re more than thrilled to welcome entrepreneurs Andre Pham and Donna Hranica to our own downtown. Newly engaged, the couple is ready to fall in love with Lancaster.
Fig®: So Issei is a bit of a family endeavor? Andre: Yes. I’ve learned quite a bit from my mom and dad about business, and they inspired me to want to be an entrepreneur. Donna and I are really excited to expand the Issei brand that our whole family has strived to perfect. Fig®: What made you decide to open your second location in Downtown Lancaster? Donna: Lancaster City is buzzing with fresh and fun ideas, so we’re looking forward to becoming an addition to the hype of downtown. Andre is always experimenting with something in the kitchen, and I know that we’ve got just the right audience here for taste-testing. Fig®: What can customers expect to find on your menu? Andre: They’ll find authentic Asian flavors with a new-age fusion twist. We recreate some of the most classically prepared dishes with a sort of Issei twist. We are not the average noodle house. Fig®: We understand you’ll have a to-go window? Donna: We are so fortunate to have this to-go window, especially for the downtown area traffic. We plan to serve affordable and healthy on-the-go alternatives for the community. Expect to find Vietnamese Issei-style banh-mi sandwiches, French-dripped iced coffee, bubble tea, and most items available for delivery. Fig®: What does a hot bowl of noodles mean to you? Andre: I grew up in Japan for 10 years before coming to the States, and every day cooking and serving our food reminds me of my Mom and Oba-Chan (Grandma) cooking for our entire family throughout my childhood. Donna: At the end of the day, we know that staying true to tradition and ultimately staying true to our family is what propels us into the future. To me, a hot bowl of ramen noodles is symbolic of a gateway into better things to come. We are truly blessed.

A down-to-earth attitude is important for owners Julia Garber and Colin Morrell. “We’re not fancy people,” says Garber. “We want everything to be accessible: verbage, food, and price point.” That’s not to say they won’t have five-star cuisine. With celebrated local chefs Daniella Ward and Matt Scouzer and award-winning mixologist Frank Fontaine on their team, guests can expect some seriously fine food and drink at Aussie and The Fox—but without the fancy descriptions. “You might just order a classic French toast,” says Garber, “but you’ll be shocked at how unexpectedly beautiful it is when it arrives.”

Giving back is a core value at Aussie and The Fox. “I knew Lancaster was the perfect spot for this restaurant because I feel like I can make a difference here,” says Morrell. With plans to host dinners and events for various charities, Garber and Morrell hope they can serve all members of the Lancaster community.

Fig®: What inspired you to open a theater like Zoetropolis? Karen: I am a film buff (been going to Sundance for years), and when I moved here from California, there was only one local place showing independant/foreign documentary content, and that was gone when Point of View closed. I met Leigh, and when I heard her history with the old Zoe, I nagged her to reopen. Ultimately, I put my money where my mouth was and became her business partner, but Leigh is the heart of Zoetropolis. Fig®: What does the new Zoetropolis hope to bring to Downtown Lancaster?
Lancaster has such a thriving arts community, but the cinematic options for smaller, offbeat films were small unless you went to the POV, Harrisburg, or Allentown. We never saw the film choices that are routine in Manhattan. Fig®: Besides new and independent film, what else can visitors expect to find? Karen: Leigh is an artist herself, and she has made our concession area a gallery. It is also becoming a great venue for private functions. We are working with LGH for a women’s expressions event in September, we have birthday parties, engagement parties, and even a wedding coming up!
Fig®: What’s on your must-see list for Fall? Karen: Each film is like a baby to me, so hard to choose. The Attack is a powerful study of terrorism. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Drinking Buddies—the perfect date movie, a romantic comedy about beer! We are also doing special events for wine lovers and a Sex and the City night! Fig®: Any favorite snacks at the concession stand? Karen: The Mexican soda is a top seller, as is the coconut water. However, I still think a buttery tub of popcorn is my favorite.

Magnolia Place—a luxury residential, midrise condominium tower on the corner of East Chestnut and North Duke streets, offers a convenient location to the best Lancaster City has to offer. fresh faces Style Standard For many young Lancaster men, buying their first suit at TMB Clothing on Queen Street is a rite of passage, a tradition that’s been passed down from father to son for decades. Shane Behmer is no exception. His father took him to TMB when he was 13 to purchase his first suit. Fast-forward about 15 years later, when Shane ventured to TMB to buy a sport coat. While he was there, the store’s owner asked Shane if he also might be interested in buying his business. In April 2013, just four months after their wedding, Shane and his wife, Kaitlin, assumed ownership of TMB, which also sells women’s
clothing and jewelry. Their goal is to preserve the level of quality and service that TMB’s loyal customers expect and appreciate. A personal-shopping service is available, where sales associates help customers find on-trend pieces that best flatter their body types. In-store tailoring from the store’s two master tailors ensures the perfect fit. Kaitlin, who is also a Lancaster native, hopes there will soon be even more choices for customers, as she plans to expand the women’s clothing side to include more contemporary lines alongside favorites such as Eileen Fisher and Lafayette 148. And she’s excited about getting more involved in the
downtown and building relationships with other shop owners in the neighborhood. “It’s exciting to see the potential and all the different connections,” she says. But one thing won’t change: the relationships TMB has with its customers. “You can get nice clothing anywhere,” Shane says, “but you’re not going to get the personal touch, the relationships, the customer service that you’re able to get in a specialty store. Looking around Lancaster’s great art scene, I saw a lot of galleries for established artists, but I didn’t see anyone representing the emerging artist.”
To Create and Inspire Artist Annie Schwartz and her fiancé, architect Peter D. Kerekgyarto, are bringing a youthful vibe to 104 West King Street. Marrying a funky, urban-industrial aesthetic to Lancaster’s storied heritage, the two are opening Sunshine Art+Design gallery as a space to create and inspire. Annie, who says her greatest desire is “to have my life revolve around art,” wanted to design a dedicated space for new artists to showcase their work. “Looking around Lancaster’s great art scene, I saw a lot of galleries for established artists, but I didn’t see anyone representing the emerging artist,” she says. Looking to fill that void, she turned to Peter to help her achieve her dream, leaning on him to envision 104 West King as a creative hotspot.
The result is a collaborative space, both for the couple, as well as for the future artists they hope to inspire. “I see an up-and-coming youthful revolution in the city,” says Peter, who witnessed the birth of Gallery Row while helping renovate those spaces for his father’s construction company. “I saw the social and cultural richness in Lancaster City and knew I wanted to be part of it.” Now a partner in the architectural firm of Beers & Hoffman, he’s excited to become a more active contributor to the area’s revitalization. For her part, Annie is devoted to celebrating both the fresh look of contemporary art, while honoring the craftsmanship of handmade techniques. To this, as part of the gallery space, she and Peter designed a paperie of curated

letterpress cards to sell, as well as an oldschool photography lab. They envision the lab as a place for experienced photographers to rent darkroom time, as well as for beginners to take workshops and learn to process their black and white film and print photos. “I wanted to find a way to preserve the medium and make it accessible to the community,” she says. “After you leave college or art school, there just aren’t places to keep learning how to do this.” Which is why she is thinking of her endeavor as a kind of graduate school. “I believe that it is important, in having a life as an artist, to continue to be working with other artists to learn and grow,” she says. “I love the process of creating.” Sunshine Art+Design is open TuesdaySaturday 10-6, or by appointment. 104 West King Street | sun-artdesign.com

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC
The songwriting of local folk trio Vulcans is rooted in the American folk tradition and their Susquehanna Valley roots. The members of Vulcans—Aaron Spangler, 23, John Thomas and Nick Lindsay, both 25—all graduated from Mechanicsburg Area High School, where they developed their love of music by singing in choirs and musicals. The band’s current lineup formed in 2010, and they released their debut album, Shadows, in 2011. (A second album is forthcoming in early 2014.) Influenced by bands such as Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers, Vulcans play a diverse blend of “Americana folkrock” that veers from, as John describes, “slow and more melancholy” to “upbeat bluegrass foot-stompers.” The band’s trademark is its stirring threepart harmony, which extends beyond the songs. Aaron refers to the band’s “egalitarian” nature in both the writing and the performing of their songs. The three rotate lead-singer duties—and instruments, as they all play the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass drum. The band has several shows scheduled in Lancaster this fall, at Tellus360, DipCo, and elsewhere. “Lancaster is going to get hit hard,” Aaron jokes. This summer, Vulcans performed at the Firefly Festival after winning the grand prize from the Philadelphia Songwriters Project contest, and won the Susquehanna Folk Society’s Songwriting Contest two years in a row. As they gain attention and fans, they remain proud to be a Central PA band. “It’s where we come from,” Aaron says, “and it influences our music and our lives.” Listen at thevulcansmusic.com

When college pals Andy Whitlatch and Patrick Andrews decided to tell Lancaster’s stories, they naturally picked up cameras and microphones rather than paper and pens. The two met as students at Temple University, where they studied broadcast journalism and co-hosted a radio show. After graduation, they moved back to central Pennsylvania and found jobs in local TV news. After covering their fair share of homicides, fires, and other downbeat news stories, Andy and Patrick decided to create their own TV show telling positive stories about Lancaster residents, events, and businesses, focusing on the unusual, the interesting, and the inspiring.
In December 2012, after a community-wide fundraising effort, the first episode of Andy & Patrick premiered on LCTV channel 66. Consummate journalists, Andy and Patrick hunt for fascinating, unusual stories that capture the city’s diversity and unique qualities. This DIY approach gives Andy and Patrick the ability to cover stories in a more in-depth manner than is typically found in TV news. The Andy & Patrick show has local partners helping it promote the City including Perfect Image, Tellus360, abc27.2, and now, an exciting new partnership with Fig®. “We believe there is strength in numbers,” says Andy. “I think that’s something that’s
been instilled in me from growing up in Lancaster.” As the show continues to grow, so does the community’s support for it. “People feel refreshed when they watch the show because it’s such a different brand of programming,” Andy says. “We want to inspire people. fresh faces A Welcomed Homecoming One year ago, Lancaster native Joshua Funk and some high school friends were celebrating July 4th in Washington, D.C., where Joshua lived and worked managing events and catering for the National Press Club. They mused about how great it would be to move back to their hometown someday. Soon after, Joshua found a listing for a restaurant for sale in Downtown Lancaster. That restaurant turned out to be Annie Bailey’s on East King Street, Lancaster’s beloved Irish pub. Joshua called his brother, Jake, who was working at a restaurant in Atlanta, and asked him if he’d like to partner with him.
Jake agreed immediately, and within a few months, the Funk brothers found themselves home once again. Both brothers have been working in restaurants since they were 15. They both graduated from Penn State’s hotel, restaurant, and industrial management program. They’re brothers, best friends, and now, for the first time, restaurant owners and partners. Joshua says, “We’re really excited to come back to our hometown at such an amazing property and start this journey together.” Joshua, 32, and Jake, 30, are fans of Annie Bailey’s and want to retain the high-quality
food and service and fun, comfortable atmosphere Lancastrians love, from lunch to late-night, tweaking only what needs to be fine-tuned. “It’s a wonderful establishment, and our hope is to continue that excellence as it grows,” Joshua says. Likewise, the two are excited to be a part of Downtown Lancaster’s continuing growth. “This is where we were born and raised, and we want to make an impact,” Jake says. “We both haven’t lived here in eight to 10 years. Coming back, so much has changed, and we both want to be a part of that.”

Within the City of Lancaster there is a youth haven sitting on 16 West King Street where education counts and leaders are made. This building is home to Children Deserve A Chance Foundation (CDCF), an organization dedicated to engaging and empowering Lancaster youth with the value of education and hard work.
Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness (AAAOK) is a community service component of its Summer Camp and an opportunity for adolescents ages 13-21 with special needs to see themselves as members of a larger community, not just as recipients of services. In July, in an effort to join the battle against childhood cancer, AAAOK participants hosted an Alex’s Lemonade Stand at GIANT® in the Lancaster Shopping Center. “We are so excited to announce a partnership between Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness and Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” commented Elaine Burnett, Program Director at Aaron’s Acres. All proceeds, $638.17, benefited Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

For Dr. Elliot Sterenfeld, true artistry is discovered by exploring the in-between spaces. He delights in a world painted with a richness of color and texture, in a multitude of hues. “It used to be that if you had back pain, you either had surgery or were told to rest and do nothing,” he says. “And even though diagnosing pain can be a complex and grey area, we now have so many wonderful diagnostic tools and complementary techniques at our disposal.” For Dr. Sterenfeld, an interventional physiatrist at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates, the most effective way to discover the source of pain, is to simply listen to patients. 102
“My greatest tools are my time and my ears,” he says. “By taking the time to hear their story, to discover how the pain impacts their life, together we can explore the nature of that pain and discover appropriate treatments. Through this educational process, it gives control and a sense of empowerment back to the patients.” For many patients, this simple act of thoughtful listening can reveal insights that lead to focused, effective treatments: from lifestyle changes, to acupuncture, to physical therapy, to injection procedures. “What exacerbates pain is fear, a loss of control,” says Dr. Sterenfeld. “I view one of my key roles is that of a teacher to help raise awareness of a patient’s own health and how to control their pain. For many patients, their
pain comes from repetitive patterns in how they move.” By listening, he can investigate and help identify these patterns and suggest modifications for patients to practice that may relieve or completely remove the source of pain. “We want our patients to be engaged and active partners in their health.
