community supporters

CREATORS, MAKERS & DESIGNERS bethlehem is filled with them; from the artisan

chefs who create delicious dishes, to the skilled craftsmen who make intricate pieces of jewelry. We have bold, forward thinking painters, pottery makers, photographers, and furniture designers who stimulate us with their work. Our community theaters, music studios, and playhouses all create wonderful stories for us to get lost in as we sit back, watch, and listen. In our City, you don’t have to look far to find the creative culture that speaks to you.

Thank you to our Community Supporters—businesses committed to a thriving downtown: Garden Spot Village and Bell Gate Farm. Although they may not be located in the City, they believe in the power of buying local and shopping small. Learn more about our supporters starting on page 37.

With the changing of the colors that come with fall, the arts in Bethlehem seem to become more vibrant. Celtic Classic ushers in the season with its bright clan banners, wool kilts, and pipe bands marching down Main Street. The ciders and pumpkin ales, the squash dishes and apple crisps start popping up on menus. Touchstone Theatre’s latest production makes its debut and Bethlehem House Gallery opens its newest exhibit. First Fridays in the SouthSide Arts District turn to cool, clear nights where you can stroll down 3rd Street, listen to music, and shop our local artists’ wares. Fall is here. And there is so much to do.

keep up with all things social

At Fig, our mantra is ‘Design for Good’; we believe in the power of creativity. Get out there this season and create. Step outside your comfort zone and make something. No matter the medium, no matter the workspace, open your mind to the possibility of designing something spectacular. We’ll be waiting, and so will our amazing City.

Join the conversation with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest! Fig social channels are dynamic, engaging resources featuring daily coverage of local entertainment, events, food, fashion, and more.

Cheers to a wonderful fall!

FRESH FACE:

DINGO!

D OM ACI

not long after derrick and warren clark moved to Philadelphia from Austin, Texas in 2009, they began looking for a home in the area. During a visit to Bethlehem around Christmastime, they were captivated by the city’s unique charm. “It’s proven to be one of the best decisions we’ve ever made,” Warren says, “next to adopting our pal Dingo!” Warren had been in retail all his adult life—getting into the furniture industry 15 years ago—and he loved it. Derrick had been involved in nonprofit management, including theaters in Austin, Bucks County, and the Moravian Historical Society in Nazareth, managing their operations. With their new venture, Domaci, Derrick manages the day to day operations, while Warren handles product curating and store design.

The Clarks work directly with small factories in India that are owned by multi-generational furniture makers. This not only ensures that they can bring handcrafted and sustainably sourced products to Bethlehem, but enables them to simultaneously improve people’s lives. The factories mix people from different caste systems—giving them opportunities where they wouldn’t normally exist. “All of our woods are certified ecofriendly, reclaimed woods,” Derrick says. “We work a lot with plantation-grown woods like mango, which is comparable to cherry and mahogany, but it’s sustainable and renewable.” In the past, when these trees stopped producing fruit, they would just burn them; now the factories harvest the lumber to make beautiful furniture.

4 523 main street 610.419.4111 domacihome.com

“We call it heirloom quality,” Warren says, “furniture you’ll be able to pass down to the next generation.” In addition to providing quality, sustainable vintage and found goods, the Clarks plan on hosting regular events that celebrate the best of Bethlehem. For example, they will be hosting the Bethlehem Food Co-Op mixer this coming August where they’ll be serving mango margaritas, of course, and monthly events like Domaci Makers where local artisans can showcase their goods. Learn more about this stylish addition to Bethlehem at domacihome.com.

AUTHENTIC:

ELLEN & TOM FLY N N

as working parents with an interest

in, and talent for the arts, for years Ellen and Tom Flynn knew all too well the challenges faced by amateur artists. Professional artists have their own home studio, or are able to rent studio space in bigger studio facilities like The Banana Factory in Bethlehem, or The Cigar Factory in Allentown. “So our concept was that there shouldn’t be a barrier to people who are essentially artists but don’t make their living as such,” Tom says. “Why should they not be able to create?” Ellen and Tom Flynn decided to open The Art Establishment in the heart of Fountain Hill, right where they live. Amateur artists can come and use their space to work independently or take 8 figbethlehem.com

advantage of their excellent local instructors if they want to learn, work through a specific problem, or just grow as an artist. They have access to a dark room as well as spaces for pottery, printmaking, painting, and drawing. “There’s a lot of artists out there who love art, have always loved art,” Ellen says, “but they have jobs and families and don’t have the luxury of studio space in their home, or the time or financial commitment for all of that.” Tailored for artists to have the studio space and professional-grade equipment on their own terms, they can have access by the hour rather than being locked into studio space for 6 months or a year at a time. The Art Establishment also offers a menu of helpful

options, including daily, weekly, and monthly terms. Being amateur artists themselves (Tom an oil painter and Ellen a film photographer), they are thrilled to offer affordable and flexible studio space to the community, and have developed several programs for adults and kids of all ages. One program that is particularly meaningful to them is an art class for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities offered on Saturdays. A gallery show featuring work by special needs artists will be held in March. Learn more at theartestablishmentstudios.com.

Jeff Vaclavik, Owner

GIVING BACK:

D EJA BREW

when jeff vaclavik gave a speech for an award he won from the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission a few years ago, he talked about the different experiences his son has had growing up in Bethlehem versus where Jeff grew up in the coal country of Nesquehoning. “It was a great place and time to grow up,” Jeff says, “but as far as the arts go, there was absolutely nothing. You didn’t walk into every other store and have art on the walls like you do here.” Jeff and his wife, Georgeann, moved from Nesquehoning to Bethlehem 23 years ago and opened Deja Brew, a cafe that’s a testament to the art-filled walls he mentioned in his acceptance speech.

For the past 21 years, Jeff has featured the work of local artists and other authentic memorabilia in his store. Jeff is also one of the founders of the SouthSide Film Festival, which just celebrated its thirteenth year. The festival has featured over 1,200 independent films from 46 states and 78 countries since its inception. Deja Brew is HQ for the film festival’s board, and their mission is not just promoting independent films but also contributing to the culture of Bethlehem’s South Side, which has been undergoing something of a renaissance in recent years. “This year we’re doing something called Flash Your Pass,” Jeff says, “where

anyone wearing a lanyard pass can receive discounts at local participating merchants, while they go between film venues—the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, the Sinclair Lab Auditorium at Lehigh University, and Victory Firehouse.” Jeff concluded that speech by saying, “My son, Brady, was literally in my wife’s belly during the first Film Festival. He’s literally grown up surrounded by art. Here you are giving us this award, but look what the arts in Bethlehem have done for our family!” Learn more on their facebook page at facebook.com/dejabrewbethlehem.

RESIDENT ARTISTS’ EXHIBITION over the 18 years that banana factory arts center has been in existence, nearly 80

Resident Artists have created within these studios. The sharing of ideas, techniques, and inspiration is a daily occurrence here, and the influence that comes from working within an artist community is immeasurable. Banana Factory Resident Artists are educators, many of whom teach classes to students of all ages; exhibitors, showing their work locally, regionally, and nationally; innovators, challenging traditional views of art and process; award-winners, recognized internationally for their skills; and entrepreneurs, selling their art in new ways and formats. As the SouthSide of Bethlehem grows and changes during the coming years, it will be the artists living and working in this community who will shape it into the arts and cultural district it is envisioned to be.

Very few would have thought that a center of industry and business would have become a breeding ground for artists and performers of all kinds, but that is exactly what is happening. What an exciting time to be a Resident Artist, and what an exciting time to witness their impact. We hope you enjoy and appreciate the amazing works of the Resident Artists included in this exhibition, and come back frequently to meet and celebrate these artists living in our community.

FIND ART ON THE

SOUTHSIDE BETHLEHEM’S SOUTHSIDE ARTS DISTRICT has become a world class arts and culture destination, recognized for both the quality of its work and the breadth of its offerings. The seeds for this flourishing district were sown decades ago, nurtured by passionate individuals who understood the powerful connection between creator and audience. Over the past 40 years, local artists and artisans like Godfrey Daniels, Cleo’s Silversmith Studio and Gallery, and Touchstone Theatre, have been presenting works that thrill, charm, move, and connect. As the SouthSide Arts District continues to grow and thrive, we celebrate the strong roots that laid its fertile foundation.

SOCIAL MISSION NEW BETHANY MINISTRIES:

At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of New Bethany Ministries—our 2016 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

a place to call home

At New Bethany Ministries, our mission is to provide opportunities for a secure future to the hungry, homeless, poor, and mentally ill of the Lehigh Valley. One of the ways we accomplish this mission is by providing housing programs for the homeless in our community. Through our Transitional Housing and Permanent Affordable Housing programs, those we serve learn how to maintain self-sufficiency while working toward long-term goals like building savings, advancing their education, and achieving full-time employment. Maintaining dignity and boosting self-esteem are critical to this success, so making these dwelling units home for our residents is important.

Our Housing Programming encompasses four main services: TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM: This program provides 13 units of short-term, case-managed transitional housing for homeless families (both single and two-parent families) referred by Northampton and Lehigh Counties, and with the assistance of local service providers. Our Transitional Housing Program is one of the very few programs that keep families intact as they work toward solving their homelessness (most Lehigh Valley organizations house dad separately from mom and the children). Annually, our Transitional Housing Program is home to more than 100 children. RESTORATION HOUSE PROGRAM: This program provides 10 apartment units of long-term, case-managed transitional housing for homeless families, requiring enrollment and completion of an educational program (both single and two-parent families). Additional goals of this program include increasing income and securing permanent housing. Our Restoration House Program has over a 75% success rate in achieving these goals. WYANDOTTE AFFORDABLE HOUSING APARTMENTS: This program provides 7 apartments for low-income families, most of whom are graduates of the transitional housing programs of New Bethany Ministries. SINGLE ROOM OCCUPANCY PROGRAM: This program operates in three locations, providing case-managed single room occupancy housing for low-income adult men and women (housing that is generally reserved for men or women), most of whom suffer from mental illness, disability, and/or emotional trauma. South Bethlehem: 15 single room occupancy units Columbia House: 20 single room occupancy units subsidized through Lehigh County Housing and one Section 8 apartment in Coplay, PA. Grace House: Opened April 2011. Provides 6 single room occupancy units in Allentown, PA for chronically homeless adult men and women, in partnership with the Lehigh County Conference of Churches and Grace Episcopal Church.
