BE be columbia INSPIRED Creation is in many ways an act of discovery—discovering something unique and valuable inside yourself that has not yet existed in the world. We all have opportunities to tap into our more creative natures, whether in our work, play, or home lives. More and more, our community is depending upon the creative contributions of its members to enrich not only our daily experiences, but also the vibrancy of our economy. Dubbed by some as the creative class, a growing segment of the economy is being driven by women and men making their living in a creative field. According to ONE Columbia for Arts and History, creative workers account for over 12,000 jobs in Columbia, with the whole creative industry bringing in an estimated $315 million from sources outside the city. Paying tribute to this creative class, we’re featuring four local makers and thinkers: a poet, a visual artist, a film producer, and a web developer. These creatives are not just making a name for themselves, they are also reaching out to other rising creatives, providing support, paving the way, and celebrating the art all around them. As Columbia embraces its ever emerging creative spirit, it’s fostering an environment where imagination flourishes, feeding creative souls with its growing array of restaurants and cafes, galleries and shops, street markets and festivals. As you explore the pages of this issue, be inspired by your own creative spirit, knowing there is a place for your voice and vision in this city.

TBonz Foundation Inc., is the non-profit sector of HHG. It is the lifeline between successful business & community partnership. Since we first opened our doors, in 1985, “giving back has been a big part of our culture. The foundation is funded by a percentage of all gross sales, not just net profits from each restaurant. Inherent to the philosophy of our foundation, is the belief & practice of active participation as well as passive contributions. They are used for the betterment of the communities through donations to various charities, service projects and deserving individuals. We are acutely aware that we are only as good as what we return to our communities that nurture us.

Shige Kobayashi, Title Please

a columbia native who has enjoyed his city every step of the way, Shigeharu Kobayashi is known locally as an enthusiastic arts supporter, an indie comic book publisher, and the fourth best waiter in town. Serving as the program manager at Tapp’s Arts Center on Main Street allows this arts fan to connect Tapp’s performance, studio, workshop, and exhibition spaces to the creators in our community. “In the past year, I’ve arranged monthly art exhibitions, created new space to display work, invited talented instructors, and coordinated weird concerts. Our calendar is full,” says Shigeharu. “You’re not allowed to be bored anymore.” In addition to his arts advocacy through Tapp’s, Shige (as he is affectionately

known) is the man behind the irresistibly fun “Columbi-YEAH” t-shirts around town. “We’re now at a point when people use the phrase ‘Columbi-yeah!’ without referring to my name, and that is so exciting for me. Our neighbors across the city are owning the phrase because it reflects how they feel about living here. I love it as an unofficial slogan and hashtag for the love and support we have for each other in Columbia.” As for his own work as an artist, Shige collaborates with a group of locals called FRANK Comics that writes graphic novels about alternate-universe Columbias. “Comics are naturally a very collaborative medium so it’s great to connect my mind with the minds and skills of partners immediately around me. I have a

tremendous need to hear the opinions, desires, and expertise of a lot of people, which I weave together to create stories.” This ability to collaborate and connect is key to what makes Shigeharu an ideal advocate for our city’s growing and thriving arts community. As he sees it, “Columbia’s art conversation is expanding every day and I want to make sure everyone knows that I will listen to their voice.” Located in the iconic Tapp’s building at the corner of Main and Blanding Streets, Tapp’s Arts Center is the premier contemporary art center in downtown Columbia. OUR COMMUNITY through vibrant social offerings

Central Carolina Community Foundation’s Connected Communities grant initiative aims to answer the questions, “What makes residents love where they live?” and “What draws them in and keeps them there?” Through this grant program, the Foundation funds philanthropic projects—spearheaded by Midlands nonprofits—based on these answers, with the common goal of further connecting residents to the community and knitting the Midlands region together. The grants fund innovative ideas that embrace one or more of the following three focus areas, identified by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Gallup as the three most important elements of an attractive community: • Welcoming Community, which promotes and encourages open and inclusive activities and programs; • Vibrant Social Offerings, which support the availability of community events, arts and culture opportunities;

With a growing segment of our economy being driven by women and men making their living in creative fields, Columbia’s creative class is leading the way to an even more vibrant future for our city. was happening and became more about the people.”

“My favorite thing is listening to why you do things, watching your face light up and your voice change as you get excited about what you’re doing, and telling the world who you are and explaining your purpose.”

Expanding his scope to include brand stories, Bill understands on an intuitive level that what most businesses need is “getting to the heart of who you are and sharing that heart with the world.”

Beginning his film business in 2005 shooting weddings, Bill explains: “Back then all I did was record what happened. I learned over the years that there was much more to be done. Who is this couple? Why is everyone so happy for them? The work needed to be different. That’s when I changed from making Videos to making Films in 2011. It became less about the things or what

As he makes his living through this creative labor of love, Bill has shared his talent with the larger community, creating compelling and beautiful short films including the Five Points Centennial, the Gervais Street Bridge Dinner, and Famously Hot New Year— telling the stories of his city and feeding our collective creative spirits. why columbia is a great place for creativity: “Columbia is a small town and a capital city at the same time. You can be friends and colleagues with the other people who do what you do without that feeling of cutthroat competition you get in a bigger market. And you are forced to treat people right because you’re never more than one social circle away from anyone. We celebrate— and struggle—together.”

proudest project: “Every year, we gather a group of about 40 poets in cabins at Santee State Park and we provide them with opportunities to learn from poets who are published and accomplished in the poetry field. My partner, Candace Wiley, and I started The Watering Hole in 2012 with our first retreat and this project is the one that I'm most proud of because it started as an idea on a Post-It note on my PC.”

originally from new york city, Monifa Lemons began her journey as a Columbia poet in the late ‘90s. As both a written and spoken word poet, Monifa longed for a community of like-minded artists to break through the inherent isolation of the work and to help foster creative growth and development.

Partnering with fellow poet Candace Wiley, Monifa co-founded The Watering Hole as a community dedicated to supporting, inspiring, and enriching poets of color. Originating as an extension of the 2010 Cave Canem South workshops hosted by poet icons Nikky Finney,

Kwame Dawes, Patricia Smith, and Frank Walker, the Watering Hole’s purpose is to “document voices that might otherwise be silenced, record stories that might otherwise be lost, and fully bask in what it means to be southern, of color, and gifted in this millennium.” Changing the world one line at a time, The Watering Hole helps facilitate relationships, creating a community of poets focused on their craft and their place in poetry and history. former columbia museum of art employee turned front end developer for Unum/Colonial Life, Sara Kennedy serves as the local chapter chair of 100 Girls of Code, supporting its mission to motivate young girls ages 10 to 18 toward a career in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Encouraging girls to not just consume technology, but to use their creativity and intellect to make technology, Sara is an ambassador for her creative field with a lasting impact on the future. As Sara explains, “The field of technology is creative because you’re solving problems in an abstract way and you have to think about things with a

very unique perspective.” An active contributor to her larger community, Sara believes Columbia is a great place to be creative because of its strong network of creative people: “They are always brainstorming new ideas with one another, recommending local creatives for various jobs, promoting local events, offering to help others, and speaking out about the importance of creative efforts in our town. People here aren’t afraid to share their ideas and see how they grow as others get involved.” Learn more about Sara’s work with 100 Girls of Code at 100girlsofcode.com/ columbia-sc.html.

100 girls of code

100 Girls of Code provides free workshops to young women, introducing them to the world of computer science and engineering, where they create with code and engage in handson, innovative thinking. They seek to inspire more girls to pursue a future in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) by providing an opportunity to create and gain confidence in what they create.

words of wisdom for young creatives: “Get involved with events and groups in town that will help grow creative areas in our community. You can impact our city, and others from the community can impact you. Go to Meetups to meet people with similar interests and learn about a new topic. Offer your time to help plan an event that you think benefits Columbia. It’s important to be communityinvolved to avoid becoming self-involved.”

proudest project: “My proudest project will be the mural on Millwood. It will be the largest mural I’ve created thus far. It will most definitely transform the neighborhoods in that area, hopefully adding to the quality of life for everyone.”

described as a visual alchemist, Cedric Umoja’s style is

a hybrid of fine and street art, creating “relevant works that carry contemporary themes while introducing methods of application found on the street.” Drawn to art at an early age with hiphop and comic books as his biggest influences, today Cedric employs elements of Graffiti, Modern European Art, American Art, Comic Sequential Art, and Japanese Manga in his works. Whether offering a graffiti demo to young, aspiring artists at Columbia’s Love, Peace & Hip-Hop festival or creating commissioned art for the renovated Richland Library, Cedric connects with this city through his creative work.

One of his most ambitious community art projects will be a mural on Millwood Avenue. Sponsored in part by ONE Columbia, the plan is to create an uplifting mural on a three-part wall to project the goals of unity and advancement. A collaboration between Cedric Umoja and two other well-respected artists (Brandon Donahue of Nashville and Karl Zurflüh of Charleston), this work seeks to provide a counterpoint to urban blight and have a positive impact on the community. To learn more about the fundraising effort for this project, visit gofundme.com/ millwoodmural.

education prepares students for the world beyond classroom walls. That’s why Heathwood’s Columbia Connections program extends our learning environment by providing unique educational opportunities with leaders from the academic, cultural, scientific, non-profit, and business communities in Columbia. Working with diverse members of the community to explore a range of issues, challenges, and opportunities allows students to gain a richer, more in-depth understanding of how skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom translate into real-world action.

giving back: amassing 2,677 rushing yards

and 38 touchdowns during his career at University of South Carolina, former running back Marcus Lattimore’s plans to play for the NFL were cut short by a severe knee injury. “I realized this game was not going to last forever,” explains Lattimore. Disappointed but not devastated, Lattimore took this setback in stride, turning his attention not just toward building a future for himself, but also for other student athletes. Starting the Marcus Lattimore Foundation in August 2013 with $15,000 from his NFL signing bonus, Lattimore’s goal was to help high school athletes who were unable to pay for treatment and rehabilitation for major injuries. His foundation also seeks

ma rcus lattimore to provide college and life preparation for students: “The Marcus Lattimore Foundation/ DREAMS is committed to youth development programs and initiatives which emphasize Christian values, character, life-skills development, education, recreation, and health and wellness. … This foundation exists to help youth leagues, parents, and high school and college student athletes.” In addition to its work on the field, such as the five sports camps last year held throughout the state, the foundation also engages in philanthropic outreach projects to rural areas such as Jasper County, where they fed over 700 residents, and Andrews, SC, where the foundation went Christmas shopping with 25 kids who were affected by the recent flooding.

“I’d like to be remembered as a guy who played the game the right way,” says Lattimore. “I’d like to be a role model for other kids. I want to make an impact in the state of South Carolina.” Making good on his goals to positively impact his state and stay connected to the sport he loves, Lattimore recently signed on as the assistant coach for Heathwood Hall's varsity football team—allowing him to work directly with students and be a part of a team again, as well as run his foundation directly from Heathwood’s campus. To learn more about what The Lattimore Foundation is doing both on and off the field, visit marcuslattimorefoundation.com or text help21 to 58885.

imagine. inspire. innovate. Picture your child building a Lego robot, shooting and editing a movie, taking professional quality photographs, or designing an iPhone app or online game as classwork. Over the past six years, Ben Lippen School has expanded our technology program to meet increasing student interest. We offer classes in digital media for video production and photography. Our programming classes teach students without any previous experience to think like a programmer and write code. Robotics classes provide both mental and physical obstacles for students to overcome, using computer code and engineering skills. New to our curriculum this year is an engineering program, thanks to a grant from the Christian Education Charitable Trust, which is allowing Ben Lippen to start initiatives around the theme of innovation—a vital skill needed for our 21st century world. Technology courses at Ben Lippen School are designed to expose students to a variety of skills to help spark their passion in the field of technology. Visit BenLippenSchool.com to discover how our technology program can help engage and develop your student’s passion in technology!
