Originally from France, owner/partner Valerie Vittu came to the States in 1994. In 2005, ten years ago, she opened her first store in Philadelphia. The decision to expand the business to Doylestown was serendipitous after Valerie met her business partner Sylvie Gardan, a French optometrist with 25 years of experience running up to five optical stores. They had a similar vision, and upon visiting Doylestown with their families, they fell in love with the borough and opened

The Michener welcomes spring with a major installation of work by Auguste Rodin, Rodin: The Human Experience—Selections from the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Collections, on view through June 14. The Museum is re-introducing works from our permanent collection, creating new themes in a fresh context. The Artist in the Garden, on view through August 8, 2015, explores the relationship between artists and the garden landscape from early in the 20th century until today. This installation is a companion exhibition to The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement, 1887 – 1920, (at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from February 13 – May 24, 2015). picture it: A young man and a new father, who considers himself somewhat of an artist, works diligently at a printing job and takes the train to Philadelphia each day. One weekend a friend asks him to help on a roofing job. The young man accepts. Eventually he quits his day job and realizes he loves being outside, free to build and construct something of significance. That young man was Philip Eiseman and he created a beautiful family and a successful business. He built a life that many people admired and respected. central to Phil’s motto about investing in the future. From his ideals of service, character, and quality, he established Eiseman Roofing in 1968 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Foundational to the success of the business was Phil’s ability to understand people—and interact with others by way of honesty and humor. Phil was passionate about many things. He especially loved racing, and felt a connection to the sport and the community that started at age 30 and was renewed at age 60. His wife, Melissa Eiseman, says that Phil was a formidable opponent. “There was no sense in racing
if you were in the middle of the pack,” he would say. Not only did Phil have the energy, the means, and the talent to be able to race, he mostly enjoyed spending that time in good company, building and strengthening valuable relationships with those he loved. A man who pursued his passions, loved his family and his friends, and served his community with a deliberate goodness— that was the life of Phil Eiseman. He will be sorely missed. Eiseman Construction continues to serve the community and celebrate his legacy.

john satriano is a retired engineer who spent his career
mapping the ocean floor for the Navy. That same sense of wonder and discovery is evident in his artistic endeavors. His winning front-cover photograph of the County Theater was captured through his car window on a rainy day. The blurred beauty comes from water droplets forming on the glass and the vibrant colors are brought to life through enhanced saturation. This photograph was one in a series of interpreting a rainy day—an assignment for a digital photo class at Bucks County Community College.
“I enjoy transforming a photograph into something more artistic and interesting. Everybody looks at photography and image making in a different way, and my way is to use photography as a tool for making an artistic statement. It’s not an end in itself, but a tool in making a work of art,” John says. John’s photography spans the work of many years. At times he felt he was looking at the world through a lens, only seeing life behind a viewfinder. So he decided to go experience it and put down the camera. Almost twenty years later he’s found a renewed sense of self—and now
spends every day painting or drawing or taking photographs. “When I’m looking for inspiration, I walk around Doylestown and find interesting things to take pictures of that form the basis of a project,” he says. Much like the depths and secrets of the sea, he doesn’t know what’s next—or what lies ahead. He does know that he wants his art to get better and more interesting, and he’s looking forward to seeing what happens. So are we! Visit satriano.net to view more of John’s work.

Growing up in scenic Sea Cliff, NY, LisaBeth Weber has always loved living in small communities immersed in arts and culture, from Key West to Woodstock to Bucks County. As a creative communicator and entrepreneur, her work ranges from writing and marketing to art and music plus being a new board member of the Playing for Change Foundation. Whether it’s business writing or songwriting, social media or social causes, the art of marketing or marketing her art, the creativity of a place like Doylestown enhances what she loves to do most, making a difference in the world while she’s here.
Krista Sherkey returned to Doylestown two years ago, after falling in love with the new energy of her hometown, and decided to set up shop. Christina Hart credits much of her creativity to her childhood in Doylestown and its endless inspiration. After she graduated from Tyler School of Art, she worked in the textile field, designing prints for the women’s fashion industry. She realized she had an affinity for all things paper after a freelance job at a greeting card company. Working on small canvases came naturally and she launched Wild Hart Paper Co. and specializes in handcrafted stationery, art prints, hand-lettered stamps, and custom invitations. It’s a community issue, and our goal is to educate and change the cultural dynamic to build a community where lives can flourish in safety,” says Communications Manager Mike Hicks. Visit Henry Mercer’s home for an up close and personal look at this 44-room architectural masterpiece. Fonthill is decorated with Mercer’s Arts and Crafts-style tiles, prints, and the objects he collected from around the world. See the Saloon, where Mercer hosted guests like Henry Ford, and the Columbus Room, which tells the story of Columbus’ journey to the New World in tile. Tours of Fonthill Castle are one hour in length and reservations are strongly recommended. The Tower Tour for Families takes place on the first Saturday of every month. Special tours include the evening Behind the Scenes tours in spring and fall and the Winter Wonderland tours in December.

The museum’s Martin & Warwick Foundation Galleries host changing exhibits that are fun for the whole family. From April 25 until September 7, the museum will present the exhibition, “To Save Our Fellow Citizens: Volunteer Firefighting: 1800 – 1875,” featuring 175 historical firefighting artifacts. The allages exhibit will also feature hands-on activities for children. Two fire equipment “musters” will take place on the grounds of the museum on Sunday, June 7 and on Sunday, August 16. The Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle host weddings, birthday parties, scout programs, camps, and adult and children’s programs. Visit mercermuseum.org for more information.

I like the European-style center of town and you actually have real, local businesses to shop at. You can walk around and see people you know. It’s like an actual community—which is sort of unheard of.
