Mower County is doing its second, major study as part of its long-term planning efforts.
Seven months ago, the Mower County Board hired Klein McCarthy Architects to do a countywide space study and develop a 20-year master plan. The study includes a facilities inventory, needs assessment, infrastruc-
ture review, conceptual designs and phased implementation for capital planning.
The firm has finished a facilities inventory and mechanical/electrical infrastructure assessment, identifying a long list of immediate needs.
Aging heating and cooling systems are the most-critical needs, including the Government Center’s natural-gas boilers (installed in 1966) and condensing unit (1952) that no longer have replacement parts. Public Works’ boiler is in even worse condition.

This spring, architects will present conceptual plans for the Government Center, Justice Center, and Public Works campus, with Public Works as the top priority. These plans will compare renovation, rebuilding on-site or relocating.
While much has happened behind the scenes, visible progress will accelerate in the coming months.
