welcome to WELLAND

FULL OF PERSONALITY AND CHARM AND THE PLACE YOU CALL HOME!

Welcome to Welland, the city where rails and water meet. Situated around the beautiful Welland River in the middle of Niagara region, Welland is small-town living in the centre of it all.

Living in Welland means never having to ask, “what should we do?” Whether you enjoy nature and outdoor activities, shopping, or indulging your inner foodie, Welland has everything you could want on offer—and more!

Nowhere is that truer than downtown, with its quaint bistros, unique shops, and iconic Bridge #13. The city centre boasts something for everyone. Sit down with family for a hearty meal at one of the many incredible restaurants, grab a cup of java to go and take a walk along the riverbank, or hit up the farmers’ market for your weekly haul. The floating amphitheatre gets plenty of use throughout the summer, with the Concert on the Canal series in Merritt Park featuring local talent each week.

Welland is perfectly located within a half-hour drive from Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Niagara-onthe-Lake, and Port Colborne, with easy access to highways and the greater Toronto and Hamilton area. But really, who wants to leave? Equal parts city and country, it’s the perfect place to call home.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you’ll be spoiled in beautiful Welland. The city has plenty to offer, whether you’re taking the dog out for a morning walk, spending some quality family time at a local park, or hitting the road on two wheels.

PARKS AND TRAILS

Welland has more than 447 acres of parkland in its many forms. Chippawa Park is known for its rose garden, featuring many varieties of roses giving Welland the nickname ‘Rose City’ since 1921. Merritt Park is home to the Welland Canal Monument and scenic winter lighting displays, while some of the other community parks offer pavilions, splash pads, sports fields, off-leash dog areas, and plenty of passive park space to stroll.

Merritt Island and the Canal Lands are a unique escape in the middle of the city—a getaway without getting away. The area offers paved and natural trails, a play area for the kids, picnic areas, and more.

CONSERVATION AREAS

Mud Lake Conservation Area offers 60 hectares of wetland and 54 hectares of field and woodland to explore. Enjoy nature trails, excellent bird watching, fishing, and fall waterfowl hunting in this beautiful space.

Located just west of the city, EC Brown Conservation Area sits on the Welland River and offers fishing, non-motorized boating,

and a picnic pavilion. The trails offer lovely views of the wetlands, meadows, and forest landscapes that were specifically designed to diversify wildlife habitat in the area.

CYCLING

Cycling enthusiasts will love the 45-kilometre Welland Canals Parkway Trail. Stretching from St. Catharines to Port Colborne, the trail follows the canal and offers the perfect opportunity to watch massive ships climb their way up the Niagara Escarpment. Merritt Island also has cycling paths where you can enjoy a serene, natural paradise just steps from downtown Welland.

your to-do list

No matter what your fun is, you’ll find it in Welland.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Welland Amphitheatre was carved into the east bank of the waterway and offers beautiful views of the Old Welland Canal. It sits up to 750 people and is the place to be on summer evenings, featuring live musical and theatrical performances, light shows, and even movies. You won’t want to miss the popular Concerts on the Canal Festival on the floating stage, featuring weekly performances by tribute bands for the adults and some great matinée shows for the kids.

ESSENTIALS & SHOPPING

Seaway Mall has everything you could want for your essential shopping needs, including Shoppers Drug Mart, Dollarama, Staples, Winners, and Sport Chek. Just down the road, SmartCentres Welland offers a collection of big-box retailers such as Canadian Tire, Walmart, and Rona, as well as the LCBO.

Of course, there’s no shortage of locally owned shops, too. From bakeries and cafés to florists and home decor, you’ll have no trouble finding what you’re looking for while supporting small business.

FITNESS & RECREATION

Welland has a great variety of fitness options, including popular gyms like Crunch Fitness and Anytime Fitness. The Niagara Centre YMCA offers a gym and fitness centre, cycling studio, indoor track, swimming pools, group fitness classes, yoga at Village Yogi and more.

The city has three outdoor pools— Memorial Park Pool, Maple Park Pool, and Rosie Smith Memorial Swimming Pool—for relaxing on hot summer days. Dive enthusiasts will enjoy the Welland Scuba Park , while landbased adventurers can tear it up at the Welland Skateboard and BMX Park at the Rotary Club of Welland Park. During the colder weather, Civic Square comes alive with holiday lights and an outdoor skating rink for the community to enjoy.

GOLF

Golfers will appreciate the opportunity to hit the green at two beautiful clubs in Welland. Cardinal Lakes Golf Club is a spectacular course and the only facility in Niagara with 36 holes. It offers two different courses, so there’s something for golfers of every level. Pelham Hills Golf Club is a longstanding favourite in the region, offering rolling hills and winding creeks, a beautiful new clubhouse, a fully licensed dining area and banquet hall, and a practice facility to warm up before tee time.

GET YOUR FOODIE ON

If you’re a foodie, Welland definitely won’t disappoint. The city sits in the middle of the Niagara region, which is known for its many local farms and orchards growing peaches, pears, plums, prunes, and sweet and sour cherries.

If you’re looking to stay a little more local, head over to the Welland Farmers’ Market —the largest market in the Niagara region. It’s open year-round on Saturdays and has plenty to offer, including fresh fruits and veggies, tasty meats, rich cheeses, baked goods, and items from local artisans.

RESTAURANTS

Dinner date? A fun night out? You’ll find everything you need in Welland. Where Welland really shines is in its fabulous local dining options. Establishments such as Blue Star Restaurant, M.T. Bellies, CC’s Dugout Italian Eatery and Ye Olde Squire provide endless options for any hungry customer.

From coffee shops like the Black Sheep Lounge Coffee Roasters to upscale eateries, the city has something that’s sure to please

every palate. And to top it all off, you’ll find locally owned bakeries, ice cream parlours, and even a cheesecakery for a sweet afterdinner treat.

There are also plenty of chain restaurants, including McDonald’s, Tim Hortons, A&W, and Subway.

WINERIES

Since you’re in the heart of Niagara, you’ll find plenty of winery options within a short drive of Welland. Westcott Vineyards is a VQA small-batch producer of classical pinot noir and chardonnay. Enjoy the stunning landscape, sip wines and savour a farmhouse lunch on the seasonal patio, or just soak up the atmosphere of the 200-yearold restored Mennonite barn.

Other wineries in the area include Hernder Estate Wines, Megalomaniac, Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery, and, closer to Niagara Falls, Lundy Manor Wine Cellars.
