A PERFECT BLEND OF HISTORY AND NATURE
Seeking a quiet spot in the heart of Niagara to put roots down? Historic Thorold is where it’s at. A small city that’s close to all the big-city amenities you could need, Thorold is the perfect blend of history and nature that makes for a great place to live.
Located on the Niagara Escarpment, Thorold is known for its conservation areas and Lock 7 Viewing Centre, but there’s something for everyone to enjoy—from the Merrittville Speedway to plenty of playgrounds to cozy local cafés and eateries.
Thorold is in the centre of it all, located just 10 minutes from St. Catharines and 15 minutes from Niagara Falls. You’ll have easy access to the QEW, allowing you to make it from the 406 to the GTA in less than 90 minutes for memorable nights out. As they say, all roads lead to Thorold!

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
If you’re keen on spending time outdoors, Thorold has plenty to offer for the whole family.
PARKS AND TRAILS
The 6.5-acre Decew House Heritage Park is a gathering place for hikers and bikers alike. It offers access to the Bruce Trail, as well as picnic areas and the remains of the historic Decew House.
For more nature and history, head to Battle of Beaverdams Park. From fountains, rain gardens, and the memorial grove to a playground and bandshell, it’s a stunning revitalization of a historic space.
Thorold is a hiker’s paradise, with the moderately challenging Black Walnut Trail, a favourite among locals. It’s a combination of woods and meadows, but it can get muddy during rainy days—you’ve been warned! Swayze Falls Trail will take you to the waterfall, while the Welland Canal Parkway Trail is a point-to-point, paved option that stretches for 45 kilometres to Port Colborne.
For fun with the kids, head to Sullivan Park or South Confederation Park. The former is four acres of playground and sports fields—perfect for an afternoon of jungle-gyming and family baseball games. The latter is a gorgeous 10-acre space with a paved walking path, soccer pitch, baseball diamonds (including one for T-ball!), a playground and splash pad.
CONSERVATION AREAS
Nature lovers will find an abundance of attractions nearby. Mel Swart Lake Gibson Conservation Park is a 27-acre space with beautiful boardwalks and trails, all centred around the lovely Lake Gibson. But it’s just the beginning of conservation spaces to explore.
Short Hills Provincial Park sits in the middle of the Niagara Peninsula and offers 660 hectares of conserved land for hiking, biking, and fishing.
Just outside the town boundaries sit Saint Johns Conservation Area and Rockway Conservation Area. Saint Johns is the perfect spot for nature watching and trout fishing, and Rockway offers beautiful wooded trails and not one but two waterfalls.
CYCLING
Remember that 45-kilometre stretch? It might be a long walk, but it’s perfect for cycling enthusiasts! The Welland Canal Parkway Trail runs from St. Catharines to the shores of Lake Erie. It’s a beautiful ride alongside the canal as you watch huge ships making their way through the locks.
Then there’s the Thorold-Welland Loop, which takes you almost 57 kilometres past Short Hills Provincial Park and through some of Niagara’s small towns. It ends with a descent of the Niagara Escarpment—and probably a well-deserved drink at a local pub.
