• The GooGoo Cluster is considered the first combination candy bar, meaning it contained several types of candy rather than an all chocolate bar. The disc-shaped treat combined marshmallow, peanuts and caramel, and was covered in milk chocolate.

• First introduced in 1912, the GooGoo Cluster was sold unwrapped from large glass candy jars in the drug store. When a regular customer told the candy’s creator, Howell Campbell, that his invention was “...so good, people will ask for it from birth!” he named his confection after the first sounds made by his newborn son, “Goo Goo!” • The 1847 invention of America’s first candy machine, a lozenge cutter, got the NECCO wafers their start. The familiar pastel candies were sold for over 50 years before they were given their name, an acronym for the New England Confectionery Company that produced them.

• It’s likely that nearly every child in America has at some time received a ball-shaped lollipop from the bank teller. These little pops, known as Dum Dums, have been around since 1924 when they were introduced by the Akron Candy Company. Sales manager I.C. Bahr named the lollipop, figuring “Dum Dum” was a word any child could say.

• Seven original flavors of the Dum Dum were introduced, with many added and some eliminated over the years, including the famous “Mystery Flavor.” The Mystery Flavor changed regularly since it was a blend of the tail end of one batch and the beginning of the next. The mixture of the two made it a challenge to identify what flavors you were tasting! • Remember Chuckles? These sugar-coated jelly candies have been around since 1921, when a Chicago marshmallow manufacturer introduced them. The five-flavored strip of candies was widely advertised with the slogan “5 flavors – 5 cents.”

• Chick-O-Sticks and Chicken Bones were pretty much the same thing. Introduced in 1938 as Chicken Bones, this was a honeycombed candy filled with peanut butter and rolled in toasted coconut. In 1955, it was discovered that another company already owned the name, and the change was made from Chicken Bones to ChickO-Sticks. Remember the times of pouring straight sugar down your throat, which is what we did with Pixy Stix, a powdered sugar packaged in a drinking straw. It started out as a drink mix in the late 1940s called Frutol, but since kids seemed to prefer the straight powdered sweet stuff, the Pixy Stix version won. The product made its debut in 1952. • The chocolate-covered, crunchy peanut butter bar 5th Avenue was the 1938 brainstorm of William Luden, who is more famous as the creator of Luden’s cough drops. The name was taken from Fifth Avenue, the high-class fashionable section of New York City that includes Times Square and the Sak’s Fifth Avenue store. To differentiate the (continued on Page 3)

Living Leg Pain a Sign of Blocked Artery By Dr Paul G Donohue

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My wife’s doctor thinks she has intermittent claudication due to peripheral vascular disease. She also has diabetes. Would you give a description of this and describe its treatment? -- S.B. ANSWER: Peripheral vascular disease also goes by the name peripheral artery disease, PAD. “Peripheral” refers to the outer boundary, and when speaking of the body, the legs are its periphery. Leg arteries are narrowed and often blocked by the buildup of cholesterol, fat and many other components found in the circulation. The buildup is called plaque. The buildup can be so great that no blood runs through the main leg arteries. Intermittent claudication is leg pain that develops when someone with PAD walks any distance. The person can tell, almost to the number of steps taken, when pain will arise. Taking a rest relieves the pain.

About 15 percent of those 70 and older have PAD. Its main sign is intermittent claudication. Your wife can do many things on her own that will help her. If her cholesterol is high, she has to get it down. She has to maintain normal blood pressure. She must exercise within the limits prescribed by her doctor. Walking is one of the best exercises. If she starts out modestly and gradually increases the distance and pace, she should aim for 30 minutes of walking daily. When pain arises, she should stop, take a break and then resume once pain has gone. One simple test for determining PAD is comparing blood pressure taken at the ankle with blood pressure taken in the arm. They should be nearly equal. If the ankle pressure is lower, that’s evidence of PAD. Your wife’s doctor will discuss the use of medicines like Plavix, Pletal and aspirin. With severe blockage of an artery, opening it up with a balloon-tipped catheter and inserting a shunt is one treatment. It’s the same procedure used for clogged heart arteries. Removing the obstructed artery segment and replacing it with a graft is another way to treat this illness.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Even the name sounds scary. CTE is a brain condition caused by concussions. Until now, this condition was thought to be limited to sports athletes, like boxers and football players, where the results of multiple head injuries over a career are well known. Research now shows that service personnel who’ve been subjected to at least one blast or concussion that resulted in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can develop CTE. CTE is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder, with symptoms only showing up later in the form of disorientation, confusion, depression, headaches, impulse control and aggression problems, suicide and more. Symptoms later in life can include dementia. There hasn’t been a way to truly diagnose CTE except for a brain biopsy after death. Researchers

at two universities teamed up with the Department of Veterans Affairs health system to compare the brains of athletes with those of service members who were subjected to at least one blast or concussive episode. They found no differences. The injury triggers accumulation of an abnormal protein called “tau” in the areas of the brain that regulate impulse and aggression control, depression and memory. It takes only one blast from an improvised explosive devise (IED) to set in motion the chain reaction that can result in CTE. Tau can be seen in the blood soon after injury, leading researchers to start trials to develop a way to detect its presence within minutes. From this they hope to find a treatment that will keep TBI from progressing into CTE. As of now, more than 244,000 service personnel have been diagnosed with TBI since 2000. It’s thought there are many more whose brain damage hasn’t been diagnosed. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to; columnreply2@gmail.com.

• Those little hollow tubes of black licorice coated with pastel-colored candy were known as Snaps. They appeared at candy counters for the first time around 1930 and can still be found at specialty candy shops. • You’ll have a little more trouble finding wax lips, introduced in the early 1900s, which could be chewed into a waxy, cherry-flavored gum. If you didn’t like the lips, vampire fangs and bushy black moustaches were also available.

• The Pittsburgh-based D.L. Clark Company had a hit in 1917 with a chocolate-covered honeycomb of ground, roasted peanuts, simply called Clark Bar. This confection became so popular with U.S. troops stationed overseas in World War I, it became a giant sensation back home as well. The same company produced the Zagnut candy bar beginning in 1930, a crunchy peanut butter bar covered in toasted coconut.

• The word “zigzag” became popular in the 1930s, and it’s believed that’s where the “Zag name originated. A “Zig” version was never introduced. • Many children spent their allowance on the cara-

Three of our old favorites, Black Jack, Beemans and Clove were discontinued years ago, but the Cadbury Adams Company, which owns the formulas, cooks up a batch of each every couple of years. The licoriceflavored Black Jack gum was the first flavored gum in America.

• Back in the late 1800s, an Ohio physician Dr. Edward E. Beeman marketed a gum of pepsin powder and chicle, designed to aid digestion. Legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager made Beemans gum famous by chewing a stick before every flight for good luck. In fact, the antacid qualities of pepsin made the gum popular with pilots for reducing stomach agitation in flight. • Clove gum was first manufactured in 1914 by Thomas Adams. Legend has it that the gum grew in popularity during Prohibition because its strong smell masked the odor of illegal alcohol on the breath. • The Beech Nut Company launched Fruit Stripe gum in the 1960s with a zebra as its product icon, packaged in zebra-striped wrappers. It was the only gum with stripes, which were added on after the gum was made. The down side of Fruit Stripe was that it quickly lost its flavor. It has now been re-introduced, and the complaint is the same -- It’s pretty much flavorless after only about five minutes of chewing. • Chicago’s Williamson Candy Store produced and sold chocolate in the 1920s. Autumn

Green Valley Lake in the Autumn For me this time of the year was my favorite to hike and watch the way things around me change. I would collect leaves after the they started to change. I collected pine cones and acorns. All of these my family and I would use to make wreathes and center pieces. I spent weekends learning to make stews and soups from my mother. I still remember the smells of them as they simmered in the kitchen all day. I remember the smell of cookies baking and hot chocolate or coffee brewing. I still use some of those old recipes today and, just like then, only in the fall. Nothing beats sitting on the porch with a cup of something steamy and fresh cookies while watching the evening sky. Except, maybe, enjoying those treats while carving a pumpkin or decorating for the season or reading a good book. I love this time of year and all the fun things to do. It will always be my favorite.

Tails of the Mountain Saying Good-Bye ~ Part II

I always recommend an animal be sedated prior to euthanasia and for children who will be there I believe this is particularly important. A child can say good-bye to a sedated animal, there is still life in the sleeping pet, but a euthanized animal does not look or feel like it is asleep. Wrangling Kiwi By Matthew Margolis

“We adopted Kiwi, so we don’t know her history, but she’s definitely a Labrador and about 1 year old, give or take. She was a stray picked up wandering the streets. She is very sweet and loving -- but totally untrained. Despite her age, she is still a puppy in a dog’s body! We have only had her for two weeks, and I don’t see signs that she was abused, but I think she was neglected. Who would own a dog without teaching her anything? I trained our last dog, and I have tried to work with Kiwi, but she is going to take a lot of work, and I just don’t have the time. She pulls and tugs on the leash, and for a small Lab, she is pretty strong. She does not come when called, and she ran into the street in front of a car last week. Inside the car, she is wild -- an absolute danger. The only way to transport her is in a crate in the back of the truck, but she barks nonstop. I used to think it was because she wanted out of the crate, but now I think she is barking at other cars on the road. I am not sure I have the time and patience to train this dog, and that is why I am looking for some help. Bravo to you for adopting this stray in need of a good home! And kudos for reaching out for help early on. Being so young and of a naturally sweet temperament, Kiwi is likely to respond well to professional training. Her past will always be a mystery, but whatever it entailed, it is just that: the past. Due diligence on your part, coupled with patience and professional assistance, will soon relegate her wild and unruly days to the past, as well. First, to answer your question: Some people, no matter how well-intentioned, never get around to truly teaching their dog much of anything. There are thousands of totally untrained dogs in this country.

Of course, my definition of a trained dog means the dog responds to a command every time, without fail. There are probably millions of dogs who are trained to the tune of “he’ll do it most of the time.” Since you have time constraints and limited patience for the type of behaviors Kiwi is demonstrating, I’ll skip over the DIY training options of books and DVDs and offer the following options for professional training: --Since none of the behaviors you mention are “in the home” problems (e.g., housebreaking, chewing on furniture, greeting visitors), “board and train” might be a great option. In short, you take your dog to a boarding facility run by or in tandem with a professional trainer, and over the course of two to four weeks, your dog learns basic to advanced obedience commands and is taught good behavior. At pick-up time, the owner typically works with dog and trainer to learn the commands and continue the dog’s education at home. --Hiring a professional trainer to come to your home on a weekly basis is also an option. This is a more hands-on experience for those willing to devote time between sessions to working with the dog on that week’s commands and exercises. It’s also a great bonding experience for you and your dog. --You could also attend training classes. These offer the benefit of added socialization and the challenge of learning to respond to you despite the distractions of other dogs and people. Each option has its merits, and the good news is that Kiwi is young and sweet and, due to the good sense of her new owner, poised for success! Kiwi is one lucky dog. With a little training, you’ll soon feel lucky, too! Woof! (c) Creators.com

It was British playwright and noted wit Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.” If you’re like the typical human, your brain makes up only 2 percent of your body’s weight, but it uses about 20 percent of your body’s energy.

When the infamous Titanic was being built, shifts were 14 hours a day, and workers only had one day off a week. Each day, each worker was allowed a total of seven minutes for bathroom breaks. Those who study such things say that marriages involving so-called mail-order brides have a lower rate of divorce than marriages that come about in more traditional ways.

******** Thought for the Day: “Among men, it seems, historically at any rate, that processes of co-ordination and disintegration follow each other with great regularity, and the index of the co-ordination is the measure of the disintegration which follows. There is no mob like a group of well-drilled soldiers when they have thrown off their discipline. And there is no lostness like that which comes to a man when a perfect and certain pattern has dissolved about him. For example, in December of 2008, some unknown person paid $5,300 to buy a single tissue off eBay. What was so special about the tissue? Reportedly, it was used once by actress Scarlett Johansson. Fortunately, proceeds from the sale benefited a nonprofit organization.

Soon the words, “Oh, Henry, could you do this?” and “Oh, Henry, will you bring me that?” became a very familiar sound. When they developed a new chocolate covered confection to sell made with peanuts, fudge and carmel, it was decided unanimously to name the new creation “Oh Henry!” •

Chuckles candy was a proud sponsor of Evel Knievel’s 1974 failed attempt on a rocket cycle to jump the Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho. The side of his “Sky Cycle” was prominently adorned with the jelly candy’s logo, which did much to rev up the sales of Chuckles candy, but it failed to contribute anything at all to a successful jump!

Dear Anne: First, you need to understand the purpose of life insurance. It is to replace income for dependent survivors that would be left in financial hardship upon the death of the breadwinner. The theory is that as a person gets older, the need for life insurance diminishes as dependents become more

Grammer Matters

DEAR MARY: My husband has a $50,000 term life insurance policy. He is 57 and a smoker, and the premium is quite high. He has an additional $10,000 death benefit policy provided for him by his employer. The value of the policy keeps going down, while the premium climbs. He pays $57 a month for the coverage. We have an IRA worth over $100,000 but plan on spending some of this money when he becomes eligible to withdraw some of it at age 59 1/2. We want to use the money to buy a bigger home. These are our plans, but I would like your opinion on this and would appreciate any suggestions about what should we do. -- Anne, Massachusetts

independent and one’s estate grows. I cannot give you specific advice because I do not have enough information, but it is possible that the $10,000 employer-furnished policy is sufficient at this point in his life, freeing that $57 each month to be redirected into an investment vehicle that would work harder for you. Whatever you do, do not cancel that $50,000 policy without first getting advice from a trusted advisor. The theory is that the proceeds of the policy would enable the family to maintain the lifestyle they had prior to the death. (c) Creators Synd.
