Oktoberfest is is full swing across our mountaintop. In 1935, the first beer produced in cans was placed on the market in Richmond, Virginia. In honor of these events, and whether or not you’re a fan of the foamy brew, follow along as we take an academic look into the subject of beer!

• Born in 1913, Ermal Cleon Fraze grew up to found a tool and die business in the mid 1940s called the Reliable Tool and Manufacturing Company. As a man with an inventive mind, Fraze developed a wide variety of products for clients including General Electric, Ford Motor, and even NASA. But his most widely used invention came as a result of a picnic in 1959. • Ermal had brought an ample supply of beer to the picnic, but he had forgotten the can opener, which was the only method available at that time for cracking open a cold one. He was forced to break open the cans by pounding them into a sharp edge on his car’s bumper. “There’s gotta be a better way,” he thought.

• Later he couldn’t sleep, so he got up to spend some time puttering in his workshop. The re-

sult of his tinkering was the first pop-top pulltab can. He received a patent for his design in 1963, and sold his invention to Alcoa Aluminum, with the Pittsburgh Brewing Company as the first customer to use the new pull-tab can concept. By 1975, a full 75 percent of U.S. breweries were using them.

• You might logically think that the amount of beer consumed is directly related to the required number of trips to the bathroom, but that’s not entirely true. Actually, it has to do in large part with something called the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) produced by the hypothalamus in the brain. • ADH regulates urine production and the amount of water in the bloodstream, maintaining the balance between water and salt in the tissues. Alcohol inhibits the production of ADH, so the kidneys don’t receive the normal signals from the brain. They go on drawing water out of the bloodstream at a constant rate because they are not told to stop. This dehydrates the body, which explains why thirst is a main symptom of a hangover.

• One of the best ways to diminish the agony of a hangover is to drink a couple quarts of water before going to bed. Guzzling coffee is not a cure since caffeine is also an ADH inhibitor and it also messes up the signals to the kidneys. Coffee has never sobered anyone up. Intoxication is caused by unprocessed alcohol in the blood, and nothing can remove it but time alone. • Why does soda fizz while beer foams? It’s caused by the chemical processes that occur during fermentation. Fizzing and foaming both involve carbon dioxide rising to the surface, but soda pop is not fermented as beer is. Brewer’s yeast feeds upon the sugar in the ‘wort’ which is the sugary substance in malt, which comes from barley. The yeast gives off carbon dioxide as a by-product. During fermentation, that carbon dioxide dissolves into the liquid. When the pressure is released when a can or bottle is opened, the carbon dioxide rises to the surface. The chemical reactions that occur between the carbon dioxide and the proteins in the wort make the bubbles (continued on Page 3)

Extreme Foods to Avoid In Your Diet This month’s Health Newsletter is focused on foods you should AVOID, especially with the holidays upon us. 1) “Artery Crust” = Judging by the label, Stouffer’s Satisfying Servings (16 oz) White Meat Chicken Pot Pie has “only” 590 calories, 13 grams of SATURATED fat and 930 mg of sodium. But those numbers are for only half a pie. Eat the entire pie, as many people do, and you are talking 1,180 calories, 26 grams of saturated fat, (more than a day’s worth) and 1,860 mg of sodium (over a day’s worth). 2) “The Triple Bypass Special” = Cannot decide what to pick form a restaurant menu? No worries. Now you can order not just one entree, but two...or three...ALL AT ONCE! Olive Garden’s “Tour of Italy” --- homemade lasagna, lightly breaded chicken parmigiana and creamy fettuccini alfredo --- comes with 1,450 calories, 33 grams of SATURATED fat and 3,830 mg of sodium. After six years, those who began the study with hearing loss severe enough to interfere with conversation were 24 percent more likely than those with normal hearing to have seen their cognitive abilities diminish. Researchers say, hearing loss seemed to speed up age-related cognitive decline.

Recent findings, says Frank Lin,

M.D., an otologist and epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, suggest that CORRECT HEARING plays a much more important role in BRAIN HEALTH than we’ve previously thought. Fortunately, there’s a potential upside. Several recent and wellregarded studies raises the possibility that treating hearing loss more aggressively could help stave off cognitive decline and dementia. In a 2013 study, Dr. Lin tracked the overall cognitive abilities (including

In a study focusing on DEMENTIA, Lin and his colleagues monitored the cognitive health of 639 people who were mentally sharp when the study began. The researchers tested the volunteers’ mental abilities regularly, following most for about 12 years. The results were striking: The worse the initial hearing loss, the more likely the person was to DEVELOP DEMENTIA. Lin is quick to point out that simply being at increased risk does not mean a person is certain to develop dementia. According to P. • A little cobalt is absolutely necessary for good health, but too much can be lethal. Brewers in Quebec and Omaha at one time added cobalt salts to their beer because it gave the brew a better head. When beer drinkers began dropping dead, the practice was abruptly halted.

• When escape artist Harry Houdini attempted to escape from a large metal barrel filled with beer, the stunt nearly ended in disaster when he was overcome by the carbon dioxide. The alert stage manager noted the lack of sounds coming from inside the can and released him barely in the nick of time. • One kind of male Australian beetle always seeks out the largest female to mate with. An Australian beer manufacturer unwittingly made their beer bottles in a similar shape and color of the female beetle, albeit at a fantastically large size. When it was brought to the company’s attention that hoards of male beetles were causing a nuisance problem with consumers by trying to mate with their discarded beer bottles,

• Linseed oil soaked rags burst into flames spontaneously late one night in a restaurant in Alameda, California. The heat from the fire popped the tops on the bottles of ten cases of beer. The suds doused the flames. • In the course of the 1949 British Open, Harry Bradshaw’s errant ball bounced into a beer bottle by accident. The ball broke the bottle’s neck and ended up inside the bottom of the bottle. Rather than risk a penalty, Bradshaw decided to play it where it lay. His swing smashed the bottle with a 7-iron , and the ball traveled about 30 yards back onto the fairway.

• In the 1830s a temperance society in Michigan was campaigning against the evils of drink. They offered their members two pledges: one was a pledge of moderate drinking, the other was a pledge of total abstinence. On the membership rolls those who had made pledges were identified as either “O.P.” for those who had taken the “Old Pledge” to drink moderately, or “TTotal” for those who embraced total abstinence. The latter group eventually became known as Teetotalers.

• In sailing, a sheet is a line that attaches to the lower corner of a sail. When you pull the sheet in, the sail is tight against the wind and the ship sails quickly. When you let the sheet out, the sail sags and flaps in the wind and the ship slows to a standstill. A ship that has “three sheets to the wind” is plowing through the water without complete control, just as a tipsy person who has had a few too many. (continued on Page 12)

Today, Washington’s crop is the largest in the U.S. In fact, more than 60% of America’s apple crop of 220,000,000 bushels are grown in Washington. That’s an enormous amount of apple tonnage, considering that one bushel alone is 48 lbs! • Although we think of Eve convincing Adam to join her in eating of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, the Bible’s book of Genesis does not actually identify the fruit as an apple. It refers to it as the fruit of the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” In ancient languages, the word “apple” was used as a generic term for any round fruit that grew on a tree, bringing about the common misconception that Eve was tempted with an apple.

into Jack-o-Lanterns to scare away wandering spirits. I still put silver in the yard to bribe and distract any passing goblins from causing trouble. I still dress up in costumes every year. It may seem odd or kooky to people, but I enjoy it every year. Doing all of these things brings back memories from my youth. The excitement of the night as I trick-or-treated with my sisters, the fun of playing jokes on our parents, and the overall harmless mischief we caused. It was one of the best holidays as a child and I have never out grown it. I just got better at enjoying it with my own family. It may seem a bit odd nowadays as people have moved away from a lot of the old traditions of the holiday, but to me, the night is still full of magic to those who are willing to find it. Most people go all out for Christmas, and I do too, but Halloween has always been my favorite, and always will be. Have a Hauntingly Great Month!

Saying Good-Bye ~ Part II Say one, and don’t forget that futuristic double collar Astro always wore. Just you and your dog? No problem! There are some legendary partnerships you can use. Lassie – You can be Timmy, or you can be anyone wearing a well as a costume. You know, because Lassie was all about people who had fallen down the well. Scooby Doo – Tap into your inner Beatnik and be Shaggy with your dog. You don’t need a Great Dane to have fun with this one. Toto (never underestimate a classic) – Dorothy or a Flying Monkey. Extra points if you are a big guy who can pull off wearing a blue gingham dress with sparkly red shoes , carrying a little dog too. Don’t have a dog? You can still play! Brian Griffin from Family Guy – Don’t forget the martini!! Clifford The Big Red Dog – Include a small doll to represent Emily Elizabeth or Charley. Cujo – This could satisfy those who prefer a little blood on their costumes for Halloween (but read the book, it wasn’t his fault!)

We’ve all seen Dachshunds in hotdog buns and Poodles in tutus, and as cute as those costumes are let’s have some fun with family costumes that include the best dog in the world, yours. Your dog doesn’t have to look like these famous dogs…you can all dress up! Just remember that movie industry dogs are made up by professionals, so with that in mind don’t try anything crazy at home…….stay away from glue and be careful with make-up around the eyes. Family Costumes: Petey and The Little Rascals – It takes one cool dog and four or five willing humans. Keep it campy and if you want to do it to scale recruit a few neighborhood kids. Astro from The Jetsons – Great costumes for every- Go out there and have fun! Happy Howloween!

Agressive Pets & Kids Don’t Mix

By Matthew Margolis

“Owning an aggressive dog and doing nothing about it is like watching a cancer grow. That cancer turns out to be especially insidious when you add small children to the equation. You know on some level it’s not going to end well. And usually, it’s the dog that gets burned. Couples who at first are married without kids often get a dog to dote on and hone their caretaking skills. They know they want to have kids someday, but someday seems so very far away. Years go by, and the dog rarely if ever is exposed to children. He’s living large, the center of attention, and then one day his whole world flips upside down -- and he’s none too pleased. Here’s another scenario, sent to me from a dog owner looking for help: We are looking to find a non-kid house for our 6-year-old dog. He has bitten two children in the past three months, one of which was my 1-year-old. Some say he is jealous, but we feel he has issues isolated to children. He came to us at 3 months of age and growled at a little girl that same week. He had two years of obedience training with a retired K-9 cop who trains police dogs. My heart is breaking for my children and for my husband and I, as parting with him was the furthest thing from our minds. However, the next time it may be a face or worse. Please help. He does quite well with adults, and we fear he is miserable here with the kids.

A little shy of six years ago, this couple saw the beginnings of a tumor and let it go. They did the right thing in getting obedience training for the dog, but obedience training isn’t enough when dealing with an aggressive dog, and K-9 training is its own beast that has nothing to do with socializing a dog and curbing or eliminating aggression targeted toward children. Another scenario -- no doubt with the same ending -stems from children not being taught how to handle a dog. Just as every person has a limit, every dog has a pain threshold. Parents often think it’s so cute when baby pulls on the dog, crawls on the dog, and pokes and slaps at the dog. These parents are almost prideful in their declarations that the dog will put up with anything. Watch this! Be warned: The dog does have a limit. And with that kind of parental cheering, the child will surely find it. In the worst-case scenario, both dog and child pay dearly. But most certainly, the dog will pay. The 6-year-old dog from the letter will pay. With any luck, his owners will find a good home for him, one that is void of children. Even so, he will endure the stress of being uprooted from his home for reasons he will never understand. And it didn’t have to be this way. from a story by Edgar Allan Poe, another pioneer of the detective genre.

It was British playwright and noted wit Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.”

Just as bears do, many frogs hibernate. A frog will burrow down into the mud at the bottom of a pond and, not being able to use its lungs to breathe, it will absorb the oxygen in the water through its skin.

Bracing for Winter

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, predictions for this winter range from mild and dry, to cold and dry, to cold and snowy, to cold and wet, depending on where you live. Some areas will get above-normal snowfall and others above normal rain. The other almanac, Farmers’ Almanac, uses terms like Frigid and Flakey, and Crisp and Very Stormy. In other words, it’s going to be colder than usual in most places. Before true winter arrives, take the time to get ready. There are quite a few steps you can take to be safe and warm this winter. Your Car: ◘ Get a maintenance inspection that includes oil change, fluids top-off and tire and brake check, as well as a new set of windshield wipers. ◘ If you live in cold country where you’re due to have lots of snow or possibly flooding from extra rain, fill a box with winter gear in case you’re stranded on the road, and keep it in your car: flashlight with beacon, mylar emergency blankets and rain ponchos (one for each person you’re likely to have in your car), a collapsible snow shovel, highcarb and protein snacks, bottles of water, waterproof matches, a wind-up radio that also charges cellphones, extra gloves and hats, and if you have room, a quilt.

Your Home: ◘ Before it gets too cold, apply caulking to the exterior of windows to block drafts. Add clear plastic sheeting to the inside of windows (the kind you shrink with a hair dryer) to block the cold that radiates in from the glass. Check for drafts in front of outlets and block with the plastic plugs or outlet insulation available at hardware stores. ◘ If power goes out, it might be out for days. Bottled water will allow you to fix soups and hot cereals if you have a small camp stove to heat water outside. Add some canned food to your supply, and make sure you have a manual can opener. Load up on batteries for the flashlights, and make sure each person has one. If you have pets, babies or aging seniors in your home, consider any special needs they might have. ◘ If you can, send extra money to your utilities each month so you’re not hit with high bills during the coldest months. ALL ABOUT BEER

~ cont’d from Page 3

• If sudsy alcohol isn’t your thing, maybe you’d rather settle for a root beer. It’s said that this soft drink was invented by a Philadelphia pharmacist named Charles Hires purely by accident while trying to create a new miracle drug. Root beer got its name because it was originally brewed from the flavorful sasafrass root. The recipe used today is usually made from a blend of syrups, but it’s still called root beer. Each manufacturer of the soft drink has a different recipe using a wide variety of flavors giving each brand its own unique taste. • In Irish culture the focal point of social life is the local pub, a term derived from ‘public house.’ At pubs, beer is served in either pints or quarts, which are abbreviated as either “P” or “Q” on the patron’s bar tab. If the bar owner was concerned the patron was running up too much of a bill, he might tell the person to ‘mind your Ps and Qs.’ A tab was often called a ‘scot’ and if the owner lost the scot or forgot to write the drink down on the scot, the patron got off “scot-free.”

Nugget of Knowledge What self-respecting beer guzzler would order a diet beer? None: That’s what the Miller Brewing Co. found out the hard way when they introduced their first diet beer. The solution, however, was simple. All they did to save the product is change the name from “Diet” to “Lite.” In movie making, nothing can be used in place of beer. Nothing looks like beer except beer!

OCTOBER WAS ORIGINALLY THE EIGHTH MONTH OF THE ROMAN CALENDAR. IT COMES FROM THE LATIN WORD “OCTO” MEANING EIGHT. LATER, IT BECAME THE TENTH MONTH WHEN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY WERE ADDED TO THE CALENDAR.
