Unusual Holidays in November By: Kathy Wolfe

17TH

When most of us think of November holidays, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving are probably first to come to mind. But there are actually a number of other special days in the month you may not know about -- some quite deserving, and others -- maybe not so much. This week Tidbits decided to bring you up to date on a few such observances that are at least worthy of note. • Most of us are probably unaware there is a National Button Society, let alone National Button Day! The society was formed in 1938 for all who enjoyed preserving, studying, collecting, and crafting with buttons, and November 16 was set aside as their day of observance. The Button Society is actually a global organization that boasts over 3,000 members on four continents.

DON’T FORGET!

Please Mention You Saw Their AD in TIDBiTS.

• Happy Area Code Day! As recently as the 1950s, a long-distance telephone call required the assistance of a Bell Telephone System switchboard “0” operator to physically plug your call into a long-distance line that connected to the phone number you wanted to reach. It was time consuming, and because a premium charge was added to the service most folks (continued on Page 2)

wouldn’t make a long-distance call unless it was truly necessary. However, a change was on the on the way when the North American Numbering Plan was devised that assigned area codes across the continent. The new system allowed the caller to simply dial the threenumber prefix to direct their call to the right city and state, thus eliminating the need for an operator’s assistance. New Jersey received the first area code, 201, followed by the District of Columbia, which was assigned 202. The first customer-dialed telephone call using area codes was made on November 10, 1951, from Englewood, New Jersey, to Alameda, California. • Folks around the world band together once a year to celebrate “No-Shave November,” when they toss their razors aside for 30 days. It all began in Australia in 2003 as “Movember,” a local campaign to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers. In the last 12 years, the movement has grown to 21 countries. Participants are urged to show off their mustaches, goatees, or whatever they can srpout, and then donate what they saved on hair grooming to their country’s cancer society for research. Leaders of the foundation hope that men will be asked why they’re sporting a beard, which will lead to discussion about this threat to men’s health. In the U.S., prostate cancer accounts for about 5% of all cancer deaths. • November 10th has been designated Sesame Street Day to honor the launch of this popular educational program on that day in 1969. Now the most widely-viewed children’s program in the world, Sesame Street is aired in upwards of 120 countries. About 8 million Americans tune in every week. • Sesame Street was the brainstorm of Joan Cooney, a public TV documentary producer, with the goal of entertaining preschoolers, particularly underprivileged children, while educating them at the same time. She wanted to use animal puppets to hold their attention, so she hired puppeteer Jim Henson to create some loveable characters. The result was Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. • Every year, the third Thursday of November (continued on Page 3)

Living Do Prednisone Benefits Outweigh Risks By Dr Keith Roach

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year old woman who always had excellent health until about four years ago, when I was diagnosed as having bronchiectasis. Since then, I have had to use an albuterol solution, plus an Airway Vest, in periodic daily treatments in order to continue breathing. A few weeks ago, my doctor prescribed 10 mg of prednisone daily in addition, and the results have been amazing. Instead of five to six inhaler treatments each 24 hours, I need only two or three, and (the best result) I can sleep through the night! Previously, I woke every three to four hours nightly for a treatment with the inhaler and vest, and I often slept poorly afterward. My prednisone dosage has been reduced to 5 mg daily, and although I know it is a (possibly dangerous) corticosteroid, I dread the prospect of going back to the days of arranging my life around the use of the albuterol inhalers, as well as feeling so much less able to enjoy what life I have left. What would be the result of continuing a minimal dosage of prednisone (5 mg or less per day)? What alternatives do I have? -- C.B.

Then as life progressed, South American people who were eating lots of citrus and nuts started eating European Foods like potatoes and beef, etc. Their bodies could not handle it well and both continents people’s started coming down with various serious maladies. Time passed and they started interbreeding and now most people are allergic to various kinds of foods. It is hard to out-guess this. Due delayed hypersensitiv-

ANSWER: This is a good question, not just for bronchiectasis (a scarring condition of the airways, so they can’t clear mucus properly), but for the many, many diseases treated with prednisone. Long-term use of high-dose prednisone (and similar steroids, such as cortisone and methylprednisolone, or Medrol) can cause diabetes in susceptible individuals, and it raises blood pressure, weakens bones, increases hunger and causes weight gain in most, causes thinning and other skin problems and, in high doses, causes confusion or psychosis. It is indeed a dangerous drug. However, as bad as it is, it sometimes is so effective at improving the disease it’s treating that the benefit is worth the risk of all these side effects. There are some conditions where the prednisone has to be permanent, although we are finding more and more alternatives to reduce or replace the prednisone. The body makes its own steroid, cortisone, at the daily equivalent of roughly 5 mg of prednisone. At that dose or less, the risks of prednisone are much less than at the high dose of 40 mg, 60 mg or greater used for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. If you have to stay on this dose, it sounds like the benefit outweighs the risk. *** (c) North American Synd., Inc ity reaction in your immune system, you can eat something on a Monday and have a migraine on Thursday and YOU are wondering what you ate on Wednesday night. Preventing Hearing Loss

By: David & Sheri Longueay

If you already have hearing loss, there’s no way to restore it back unless there’s a treatable medical condition that caused it. But if it’s not a medical condition, rather just agerelated or noise-related hearing loss, 95% of the time it can be successfully treated! If the damage hasn’t been done yet, and you have normal hearing they’re are ways to prevent severe hearing loss; And you shouldn’t think just because you could take loud noise in your youth, that you can still take it later in life without the pos-

sibility of permanent damage; aging affects every aspect of our health including hearing! The sad part about hearing loss is it’s almost always permanent…the only exception is certain medical conditions that can be treated such as middle ear infections and certain other conditions that your doctor can advise you on! The World Health Organization estimates one billion young individuals around the globe are at risk of hearing loss because of unsafe listening practices; Especially with the popular listening devices, loud headphones, concerts etc. 10% of our current population already has hearing loss! A few of the easy measures: Using ear plugs when you’re exposed to loud noise is highly recommended. Avoid being too close to speakers at a friends house or a live act at the local bar and concerts. Think more about loud noise exposure before you’re exposed to it so you can do something about it when it suddenly happens. Do you go shooting or hunting? Avoid inexpensive hearing protection! Gun shots are so po-

tentially damaging, you need quality protection to help prevent hearing loss! Here’s a list of probable risks that generate sound above 85 decibels (DB) which is the maximum level for safe hearing:! 90-100 DB: Lawn movers— especially older ones - If you mow your lawn or use heavy equipment, use ear plugs! 80-110 DB: Attending local fairs—Those race cars can hurt your ears if you’re too close and the small entertainment venues can get loud too.! 80-100 DB: Hair driers near your ear without ear plugs can also put you at risk.! Taking a helicopter ride or working near loud airplanes or vehicles. ! 120 DB and above: Shooting ranges and just about any military position! 90-110 DB: Subway trains! 115 DB: Baby’s cry - Be careful when holding a crying baby near your ear! 110 DB: Car horn! 100 DB: Snowmobiles and other off road vehicles!

We are exposed to so many noises that can cause hearing loss; Care should be taken in the same way you (continued on Page 4)

is designated The Great American Smokeout, when Americans are urged to quit the tobacco habit. It is the hope of the American Cancer November Society that the 24-hour challenge, this year By: Windy G. Walker on November 17th, will help make the decision permanent. The event had its beginnings Ms Walker moved up to Crestline in 2016. in 1970, when Arthur Mullaney of Randolph, Our beautiful mountains inspire her to write lovely Massachusetts, asked people to give up tobacco poetry. Windy is the author of several children’s for one day and donate the money saved to the books. Look forward to more interesting articles local high school’s scholarship fund. A similar and beautiful poems from Ms Walker! campaign was held in Minnesota a few years later, and in 1976, the American Cancer Society had its first official Smokeout in San Francisco.

Pierre Poivre, a one-armed French horticulturist who lived in the mid-1700s, was caught stealing spice nuts, known as peppers, from Dutch trade ships and planting them in his garden.

The official definition of a tongue twister is “a phrase containing a combination of alliteration and rhyme strategically designed to be stumbled over.” Some of the more familiar ones include “rubber baby buggy bumpers” and “She sells sea shells by the seashore.” The Guinness Book of World Records states that the English language’s most difficult tongue twister is, “The sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick.” Try that one with a mouthful of crackers!

Wilhelm Roentgen accidentally discovered the X-ray in his laboratory. While experimenting with passing an electrical current through a glass gas tube, Roentgen noticed that the beam turned a screen 9 feet away a strange greenish fluorescent color. Even more surprising, the tube he was using was covered in heavy black cardboard. Realizing that objects could be penetrated by the rays it emitted, he experimented further using his wife’s hand, which showed the bones in her fingers visible as shadows on the screen. He had conducted the first X-ray. Roentgen was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901 for his breakthrough discovery and its valuable contribution to medicine. • November 19th is Rocky & Bullwinkle Day, created to commemorate the premier of Rocky & His Friends (later known as The Bullwinkle Show) on that day in 1959. The animated series, which featured Bullwinkle the moose and his flying squirrel friend Rocket J. Squirrel (Rocky), aired from 1959 to 1964.

• Bullwinkle received his name from the name of a Berkeley, California car dealership called Bullwinkel Motors. The duo lived in the fictional Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, which was loosely based on the real Minnesota city of International Falls. The two heroes waged a constant battled against the evil Russian-esque spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. • You probably didn’t know that November 15 is National Bundt Pan Day, a day set aside to honor this ring-shaped, fluted cake pan. Inspired by the European fruit cake known as Gugelhupf, the pan was invented in 1950 by David Dalquist, (continued on Page 12)

Thanksgiving Traditions In Our Home By: A Jetton Enjoy our feature article by one of our local residents of Green Valley Lake. A Jetton was a regular visitor to the mountains growing up. We look forward to reading many entertaining stories in the future!

We all have traditions we learned from family, culture, and society. The Thanksgiving season has a variety of traditions people continue through out their lives. Growing up my family got together and spent the day cooking and joking. We had the same meal every year, which I assumed at the time was the same thing most people had. We cooked a turkey, pies, peas, rolls, gravy, ham, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, stuffing and a few other snack items like a veggie tray. I thought this was normal for everyone.

Nestled in Green Valley Lake is the wonderful restaurant and vacation retreat called the

Log Cabin Cafe and Malt Shoppe Inn.

At the Cafe, you can enjoy the delicious hamburgers, fish & chips and more! Enjoy 7 flavors of milkshakes and malts across from the beautiful Green Valley Lake where you can also fish, boat, and swim in the lake. You can also stay in the beautiful lakeside rooms at the Malt Shoppe Inn. The Inn is a spacious suite atop the Cafe. It has 2 bedrooms with queen beds, full kitchen with dinette table, lounge area with an extra large flat screen TV equipped with large selection of DirectTV channels.

Thank You for Your Service!

You know what I love? Walking into my supermarket the day after Thanksgiving and hearing the best Christmas music ever. Yeah! And if I wasn’t in the mood to bake Christmas cookies before I got there, just hearing that lovely music changes everything. Right there, that proves I am a quintessential, typical consumer. That retailer’s got my number. While I don’t want to stop loving music (I swoon to the Beach Boys during the summer months because this store has an uncanny way of knowing what I like), what I have changed is the way I hear it while loading up on groceries. They’re doing this on purpose, by design because retailers have irrefutable evidence that the right

Open Daily • 909-685-4077 music can result in increased sales of targeted products. It’s like tasty bait on the end of a sharp hook. Playing the right music isn’t all that retailers do to manipulate us into dropping more money than we’d ever intended to spend before walking in their store. Scents. Think you’re the only one who detected that amazingly subtle yet delicious scent as you strolled in? Richard Axel and Linda Buck won a Nobel Prize for their work in understanding our olfactory system, which allows us to identify and categorize 10,000 scents, all of which can trigger powerful nostalgia-laced memories. No wonder a specific fragrance reminds you of your grandmother or the smell of pine trees floods your mind with childhood camp experiences. Scents (continued on Page 12)

When I moved to Texas and had my first Thanksgiving with my husband’s family I found out I was wrong. They still got together but most of the cooking was done the day before and brought to the gathering. Everyone made and brought something. They had the turkey and ham, but they also had things I hadn’t had before. I had no idea what candied yams were, or that “dressing” was basically cornbread stuffing. I learned that yes, my family spent our time cooking together and enjoying the company, but his family precooked so they could focus on spending time together without “burning the peas.” They ate together and played Spades or Dominoes and caught up on what was going on in their lives. It was a bit unusual to me, but I quickly realized both traditions worked. I have taken bits and pieces from both families to use in my own home now that we live farther away from family. We don’t always make a huge spread like when we have more people, but we still spend the day with loved ones, enjoying what we do have.

Protect Your Home from Dangers of Carbon Monoxide

(877) 411-9888

Carbon monoxide is an invisible threat to the health and safety of your family. It is important to take any preventative measures you can to protect your home from a carbon monoxide leak. How to Detect Carbon Monoxide in Your Home The best way to detect carbon monoxide in your home is by using a carbon monoxide detector. This device is similar to a smoke alarm as it monitors the air for carbon monoxide and sounds an alarm if high or hazardous levels are detected in your home. It is best to place a detector near each living area in your home. Even if the alarms don’t go off, you could still be exposed to low levels of carbon monoxide that can cause health issues. If you or anyone in your home is experiencing symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, nausea, or chest pain, don’t wait to take action. Call your HVAC company right away to inspect your heating system. HVAC Safety Tips for Carbon Monoxide Carbon monoxide poisoning poses serious health risks, and one of the best ways to avoid this from happening in your home is by taking the right preventative measures. An HVAC company can help you prevent carbon monoxide leaks from happening in your home. Use the following tips to help protect you and your family:

CALL 877-411-9888 or GO TO SheldonsService.com

• Schedule regular heating system maintenance. You should have your heating system inspected and address any issues at least once per year before the start of the winter season. The HVAC technician will look at your furnace, vents, chimneys, fireplaces, and any appliances that burn fuel in order to identify any issues that may put you at risk for carbon monoxide leaks. • Inspect the heat exchanger. The typical furnace maintenance visit from your HVAC company may not include a heat exchanger inspection. The heat exchanger is one of the most common causes of carbon monoxide leaks, so it is important to make sure that this part is not leaking or failing. • Make sure your vents and flues are clean. Your ventilation system is meant to help move hazardous gases outside of your home, so it is important to make sure your vents are not blocked or clogged. Blocked chimney flues is another common cause of carbon monoxide leaks, so it is important to make sure that these are also cleaned and clear of debris. • One of the best ways to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning is by scheduling regular preventative maintenance with an experienced HVAC technician. If you need a tune-up or inspection of your heating system, call us today. We currently are offering a promotional discount on servicing.

Tails of the Mountain By: Lauren Wygant Lauren Wygant, local mountain resident & founder of “Tails of the Mountain”, is a certified animal trainer with experience training many different animals for many different tasks. She is also a Human Educator believing animals have the ability to teach & heal the most broken hearts.

Traveling during the holidays to share time with family and friends is a must, but often not all the family members can go on those visits. Now is the time to make your arrangements for your pets as professional pet sitters, boarding facilities, and neighborhood friends alike start booking up. A good boarding facility can offer your pet a minivacation of their own. Often these businesses have play time (group or individual), offer attention from multiple people, and hand out treats. You can make reasonable special requests as well. Do your research and visit the boarding facility before you book. A veterinarian can be a good option, particularly if your pet has special medical needs. Remember that as much as your vet and the staff love animals, boarding is not their first business and it is unusual for someone to be on site overnight. Veterinary offices can be

Home Alone for the Holidays a stressful environment so use this option if it is a necessity. Day visits can work for fish, reptiles, and households with multiple dogs or cats who can keep each other company and are accustomed to being left on their own. This can often be the least expensive and easiest option. If day visits are a good fit for your pets make sure they are visited at least three times in a 24 hour period, and more if your pet must be given access to the outside. Overnights with day visits can get pricey, but if you have multiple animals, multiple species, or special needs/very young/very old animals it can actually give the best value. One person who can come in and take care of everyone while maintaining a sense of normalcy in the routine will save you in time, money, and worry. Whichever option you decide is best be sure to leave clear instructions on care, easy to find supplies, a good contact number to reach you; and though no one wants to think the worst, be sure to leave written permission for emergency vet care and euthanasia instructions if necessary. You can work out details, maximum expenditure, and payment options with your vet before you go.

The Question of a Second Dog By Matthew Margolis

“A woman called me last week and said, “I have an 8-year-old dog, and I think he’s lonely. Don’t you think he needs a friend?” That depends. If a person is feeling lonely, the holiday season is likely to exacerbate it. But your dog doesn’t know Christmas or New Year’s from the middle of August. For the most part, dogs don’t get lonely, people do. Read between the lines: Her dog is getting older, and she’s anticipating the pain she’ll inevitably feel when he passes. It isn’t uncommon for people to get a second dog to ease that sadness. And isn’t necessarily a bad idea. Necessarily. The good: -- Bringing a puppy into the house can have a rejuvenating effect on the older dog. Puppies are playful and silly, and their exuberance is contagious. -- Young and old dogs can bond, giving the older dog a renewed sense of purpose. -- The dog owner will not have to endure the heartbreaking quiet of a home that used to house a dog. -- Another dog finds a loving and permanent home. The bad? There could be no downside whatsoever. In this case, however, the woman who called wanted a second dog, but her husband didn’t. Neither babies nor dogs make good Band-Aids for a marriage.

When I asked her why her husband didn’t want another dog, she told me it was because they’d never trained the one they have now, who is a bit of a mischief-maker. In fact, he had recently devoured a child’s plastic toy, landing him in a veterinary hospital and saddling them with a surgery bill for $8,000. Hubby has a point. It can be hard enough -- and expensive enough -- to live with one untrained dog. Add a new puppy to the mix and you might as well issue a standing invitation to the Hell’s Angels for drinks at your place. Another factor to consider is that your dog may not want a “friend.” Not all dogs enjoy the company of other canines. They are pack animals, yes. But at the age of 8, this particular pooch’s pack has been established. If he views himself as the pack leader -- which is entirely possible since he was never trained -- he will defend that position when the other animal is brought home. And if the new pup is also of an alpha mindset, well, you’ll find yourself reminiscing on how peaceful your time with the Angels really was. On the other hand, if you bring a new dog into a household where it is deeply entrenched that you, the dog owner, are the pack leader, then there is very little need on either dog’s part to fight over a position that is already filled -- by you. I ended our conversation with one last bit of advice: If you insist on getting a second dog, make sure you don’t end up with two female dogs in the house. “But I don’t like males,” she said. And I couldn’t help but wonder if she meant two- legged or four. Woof! (c) Creators.com

know, but the truth is that is does. It’s called “left-digit effect.” Retailers count on the “just below price” all the time because they know we’ll fall for it. All the time. Beat ‘em. The best way to win when we go up against retailers--which of course we do every day--is to be aware. Figure it out. Stop being a mindless consumer! Go in with a plan, a list, cash and a strong mind. Make a note of the sounds and smells. Look at the pricing structure. Do a mental, “Ah-ha! I know why you’re doing that!” Then take control of yourself. Don’t give in to those silly ploys. And when you hear the lovely tones of “White Christmas,” take a look at your shopping list. See right there? You wrote it down because Mary told you that the holiday season is the time to load up on loss leaders in the baking aisle. Find that one gigantic display area where all the baking supplies are on sale (for real, not some fake kind of tricky sign) and load up. Enjoy the season, but keep your wits about you and don’t fall for all of the Christmas gifts (have you noticed how supermarkets turn into department stores about Dec. 1?) and other impulse stuff they’ve loaded in, believing that you are weak and mindless. And all of the lovely fragrances? Enjoy them, knowingly. Resist the impulse displays, get what you need -- and then get out of there! That’s the way to nibble at the bait without getting hooked and reeled in.

can subconsciously affect the way we spend. Theaters, bakeries and countless other retailers know this and capitalize on it big time. Many retailers create “rest areas” where they know you will be prompted to stop and just look around. It might be at the checkout or in an area that just screams “cozy place to stop and look around!” Once they have it nailed, they load up the area with impulse buys -- small things, lovely things they know you won’t resist. Mostly they’ll put them at eye level and within easy reach to aid you in your sweet moment of rest. Sneaky tricks. We’ve come to expect that a sale comes with a sign. Most of the time it is a red sign with big black numbers and smaller words that don’t really matter. We’ve seen it so much, now we are like Pavlov’s dogs. We react without thinking about it. And what if the word “Sale!” is replaced by “Hot!” or “Bargain!”? We don’t notice. We grab and go because it’s gotta’ be a great bargain. Retailers capitalize on what they’ve learned from Dr. Pavlov. Numbers. This one is so crazy, I still have trouble wrapping my head around it. Why is it that humans stop short and think about it if the price ends in .00, while thinking that if it ends in .99 or .95 that somehow Copyright Creators.com that is a good price? Why, oh, why? I don’t

founder of the Nordic Ware Company. He first called it a “bund” pan, from the German word for “gathering,” but added a “t” at the end for trademark protection. • There wasn’t much enthusiasm about the tube pan until the 1960s, when Texas housewife Ella Helfrich concocted a recipe for the “Tunnel of Fudge” cake using her Bundt pan as the mold. She was awarded second place in the annual Pillsbury Bake-off Contest, taking home a $5,000 prize. The popularity of the Bundt pan immediately blossomed, and today more than 60 million have been sold worldwide.
