Christmas Around the World

• In 1836, Alabama was the first U.S. state to declare Christmas a legal holiday. President Franklin Pierce decorated the first White House Christmas tree in 1856. And in 1907, Oklahoma was the last state to officially declare Christmas a legal holiday.

• The revolutionary new idea for using electric lights to decorate Christmas trees came from an American named Ralph E. Morris in 1895. Strings of lights proved to be more colorful and considerably safer than the previously used candles, which, as you can imagine, were an extremely dangerous fire hazard. (continued on Page 2)

• The first Christmas card was created in England in 1843. Hallmark introduced its first Christmas cards in 1915, five years after the the greeting card company was founded. Today, the average American household will mail out 28 Christmas cards, and receive 28 in return. The U.S. sends approximately 1.8 billion Christmas cards through the mail each year.

• You’ll always find plum pudding on the Christmas menu in Great Britain. When preparing this seasonal dish, the British have a traditional practice of making a wish while stirring the ingredients in a clockwise direction. At Christmas dinner, the pudding is served with little treasures hidden inside that bring their finders good luck. And in case you didn’t know, Britain was the first country to hang up mistletoe. • In Italy, a dinner of several kinds of seafood, sometimes called the “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” is a popular Christmas Eve meal.

• A curious tradition takes place in Estonia on Christmas Eve, when large families gather for close togetherness - in the sauna.

• The American version of St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus, originally came from the Dutch version called Sint Nikolaas, or Sinterklaas. To the delight of their children, the Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam (New York) brought this fun and lively tradition with them to America. Santa is known throughout the world by many names: Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Saint Nicholas, St. Nick, Pere Noel, Babbo Natale, Pelznickle, Jultomten, Hagios Nikolaos, Svaty Miklas and Joulupukki -- to mention but a few. • In Liberia, on the west coast of Africa, most homes have an oil palm decorated with bells for a Christmas tree. On Christmas morning, presents such as cotton cloth, soap, sweets, pencils and books are exchanged. Also on Christmas morning, a church service is held in which the Christmas scene is enacted and hymns and carols are sung. • In Caracas, Venezuela, it is customary for the streets to be blocked off around Christmas so that people can roller-skate to church. Ringing in Your Ears...

A Cure?

By: David & Sheri Longueay

It’s called Tinnitus ( Tin-a-tiss ) and those who have it know how annoying it can be! New advances and studies have provided relief for many patients… Sheri Longeuay, co owner of Crystal Clear Hearing Aids has a mild hearing loss, but an extreme case of Tinnitus. The constant ringing in her ears is so loud it’s like someone screaming at her. On a scale of one to ten, one being non-existent and ten being extremely loud, she’s at about an 8 or 9 most of the time when she’s not wearing her high-tech hearing aids. It’s very distracting and it makes

Living Is Right Arm Better for Blood Pressure? By Dr Keith Roach

to use whichever arm is easiest for you. There are some automatic blood pressure cuffs that are designed to be on the left arm, probably because most right-handed people have an easier time manipulating the cuff with their right hand. A human is more accurate than most machines. If there is a significant (greater than 10 mm Hg) and consistent difference in the left arm from the right, that could indicate an abnormality such as a coarctation of the aorta. This is a congenital constriction of the aorta, the major blood vessel of the body. Fortunately, this is pretty uncommon to find in adults nowadays. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you explain the proper method for taking blood pressure? One instruction I read says to use the left arm. However, another shows the health-care worker taking blood pressure in the left arm and patients using automatic cuffs on the right arm. The right subclavian artery comes off the ascending aorta closer to the heart than the left subclavian artery, which suggests that the logical method would be to use the right arm. However, the self-assessment health stations at the grocery store and the YMCA are set up to Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers use the left arm to measure blood pressure. -- C.R. may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. ANSWER: There usually is only a small difference between the left and right arm blood pressure, so it is OK

For Your Health By: Dr Carl J Melville II

Children’s Health in the Modern Age “Keeping children healthy can be difficult at times however a variety of Holistic Tools can help make the challenge easier to tackle. I will reiterate: Drinking the right amount of water for your body weight, staying well-adjusted on a regular, maintenance basis every 2 weeks and stretching are the very, very bottom line health basics for anyone, for ANY human body. Children are always playing and hanging form something, so stretching is usually not a problem. Getting them adjusted is mandatory, seeing that they drink pure, good water is also a must. Take your body weight, divide in half x 0.8 = the right amount of water per day to drink for any child or adult. Children must stay away from artificial colours and food additives and sugar. I recently treated a 3 year old girl with headaches as I specialize in the upper cervical vertebrae which controls blood and nerve flow to the brain. Kids that are irritable, ADHD, colic, seizures need these highly specific adjustments.

it real hard to concentrate on daily conversations and events, says Sheri. Fortunately for Sheri (and for most of her patients) there’s total relief from this annoying sound via the new Tinnitus Masker found in modern hearing aids. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimates that nearly 15% of the general public — over 50 million Americans — experience some form of tinnitus. Roughly 20 million people struggle with burdensome chronic tinnitus, while 2 million have extreme and debilitating cases. Tinnitus has been described as ringing, clicking, roaring and other annoying sounds that can make life difficult; It’s not always the same in all people… Here’s how it works: First of all, it’s important to understand we hear with our brains. Our ears are only the ‘conduit’ that feeds sound to our brain. Conversely, Tinnitus is also generated in the brain even though it’s perceived in our ears. There are a lot of ‘theories’ about how sufferers of Tinnitus have this phenomenon. One theory that makes sense to Licensed Hearing Instrument Specialists David & Sheri Longeuay is when the brain is not

Also, consider FOOD ALLERGIES for a hyper-child and headaches and sinus issues as well as many other ailments. We offer here at NEW LIFE State-of-the-Art Food Allergy testing by blood analysis. These are the very basics for children. This is where you start. If you miss these or do not eliminate the offending allergens, you will be going out in left field with all kinds of tests and money, possibly leading nowhere. To be Continued.....” Yours in health, Dr. Carl J. Melville II

receiving certain frequencies (due to hearing loss that’s usually in the high frequency range) it manufacturers those missing frequencies to “make-up” what it’s losing. This is not the only way our amazing bodies compensate for things that it’s lacking: For example, the body will tend to stop burning fat when it’s not fed, thus most dietitians will tell you that depriving the body of food, is not a good way to loose weight. But Tinnitus is not always synonymous with hearing loss; David treated a patient with a debilitating case of Tinnitus, but with no hearing loss. The patient was astonished at the immediate relief she experienced because her doctor told her there was no cure or treatment for her condition. Many doctors are not familiar with the new technology that top hearing aids manufacturers have developed. On a percentage basis, 90% of patients seen by Crystal Clear Hearing Aids enjoy relief in about fifteen to twenty minutes after the masker is applied. It’s really great to see (continued on Page 4)

Keeping it Local This Holiday #ShopSmall Season

By Craig W. Armstrong

Tis the season for holiday shopping and for some people it can get tedious. Some folks put their heart and soul into holiday shopping, getting gifts for everyone from their family to their mail carrier. But what if you could do your shopping and help your community all at the same time? One way to do this is to shop local. Shopping local is a concept that has been around for years, but tying it to the holidays really got a push with Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is the Saturday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It began in 2010 as a marketing campaign by American Express. While Black Friday benefits the big box retailers and Cyber Monday benefits online shopping, Small Business Saturday carves out a day for the Mom and Pop stores. So how does shopping local benefit you the consumer? First, you have much more control and probably get much better customer service. Let’s say you’re buying a tool for Dad. Do you think you will get better service at an enormous big box home improvement store or from the local hardware store that has been in business for 30 years? Have you ever tried to find help at one of these warehouse type stores? Good luck finding someone over 18 to answer your question. It is also more likely that local business owners will stand by their products, as they have their reputation to protect. Shopping local keeps your community strong. Spending money locally keeps that money in the community which helps the community grow. A growing community will then have a better opportunity to support other local organizations like youth sports, non-profits and charitable organiza-

(CHRISTMAS...WORLD ~ continued from Page 2) • In Bangladesh, Christian men in each village place full-sized banana trees in parallel rows along the paths to churches holding Christmas services. The trees are then bent to form an archway. Oil lanterns made of bamboo poles are tied on the arches, lighting the path to the church entrance.

tions. Shopping local also creates jobs. The more successful a local business, the more people they will need to hire and the more people who are employed, the healthier a community becomes. Also consider how local businesses can make your community more unique. Big box chain stores are everywhere and their products are all the same. But let’s say your community has a bakery for dogs. Now that’s unique and people will come from far away to check it out. The more people that shop your community, the stronger its economy becomes and this can benefit everyone. From a tax standpoint small businesses make better use of your tax dollars. These businesses require much less infrastructure investment than national chains. Small local businesses are also more efficient with the use of public services. Both of these factors allow your tax dollars to go father. Shopping local this holiday season is a great idea for many reasons. So before you start checking things off of your list, check out your locals business. It’s a win for them, for you and for your community.

Exchanging gifts is only a small part of their Christmas celebration, and children usually receive only necessary items such as shoes, toothpaste and items of clothing.

• In the Netherlands, the Dutch eagerly await December 6, when they celebrate St. Nicholas Day, the coming of Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas sails from Spain every winter, and Dutch children fill their shoes with hay and sugar for his horse on St. Nikolass eve and awake to find them filled with gifts such as nuts and candy. On St. Nikolaas day, they celebrate with family get-togethers and feasting, after which everyone settles down to prepare for Christmas Day on December 25. • Christians of most denominations in Hong Kong celebrate Christmas with hundreds of church services spoken in various Chinese dialects. There are also services held in English for the resident Europeans. They also send exquisitely decorated Christmas cards, and these

cards often show the Holy Family in a Chinese setting. Santa Claus is known as Sing Daan Lou Yan (Christmas Old Man) in Cantonese or Sheng Dan Lo Ren in Mandarin. • Scandinavia has a sweet Christmas tradition. A little gnome called Julenisse puts the presents under the Christmas tree at night. Before going to bed, the children place a bowl of porridge for him under the tree. • Scandinavia is where we derive most of our Yule log traditions. The dark cold winters of their northern latitudes inspired traditions concerned with warmth and light. Yuletide, which means “the turning of the sun” or the winter solstice, has been an important observance in Scandinavia for hundreds of years.

• The Yule log was originally an entire tree trunk, carefully chosen and brought into the house with great ceremony. The butt end would be placed into the hearth and ignited from the remnant of the previous year’s log. The remaining length of the log protruded into the room and was regularly turned while the fire in the hearth was constantly stoked and kept flaming. The tree would be gradually fed into the fire a day at a time until it was fully consumed. The entire process was carefully timed to last the entire Yuletide season. • For reasons that are unclear, it was once considered dangerous in Scandinavia to sleep alone on Christmas Eve. The extended family, master and servant alike, would huddle and sleep together this night on a freshly spread bed of straw. (continued on Page 12)

the faces on these persons who have suffered so long with no hope or help, says David. No known medications can help Tinnitus and there are no “cures” to make it go away permanently, but we have found that new technology in hearing aids can bring much needed relief to many patients who suffer from ringing in the ears. In most cases, the relief only comes while the recipient is wearing the hearing aids. Of course there’s no guarantee that every sufferer of Tinnitus will find relief at our clinic, but many people do: David and Sheri say they have about a 90% effective success rate in the patients they’ve treated for Tinnitus. There’s one way to find out if you or your loved one will benefit from this new treatment! Crystal Clear Hearing Aids offer free demonstrations of hearing aids during a first appointment, so patients can hear what they’ve been missing and experience relief from that annoying ringing in the ears. The Dreaded Tradition By: A Jetton Enjoy a feature article by one of our local residents of Green Valley Lake. A Jetton was a regular visitor to the mountains growing up. Look forward to reading many entertaining stories in the future!

Each year when the holiday season comes around, families everywhere celebrate in their own ways. Some things are common, like trees, and lights on homes. Others are more unique to that family. With my family it is the same. We spend time putting up lights and decorating the house. We listen to holiday music and generally have a good time. Yet every year there is the family debate and game of hide the “Hideous Thing”. You know what I mean. That one decoration that has been passed down for generations. It could be a stocking, ornament, center piece, or wreath. Whatever it happens to actually be, everyone usually agrees it is the worst thing ever and nobody wants to put it out. Sadly, no matter how much you debate with family about the silly thing, somebody always says “Well it’s tradition. We always put it out when I was a kid. So we have to use it.” My sisters and I found that a fun game of hide the horrible decoration, which for us was a creepy nutcracker, tended to be rather amusing. First we pulled it out of the box and put it where my mom would see it. Then it was move it around the house until she barely noticed it wasn’t where it was supposed to be. It normally ended up hidden behind the tree, so nobody had to actually look at it. We did this every year. My parents accidentally created a new tradition by trying to keep an old one. We still think the thing is beyond creepy and ugly, but now, when we visit we still play hide the nutcracker. We all giggle about it now and Mom calls us when she can’t find it. As a kid, we hated that thing. Now I don’t think the holidays would be the same without it or the game we play.

• In 1947 a friend of May’s named Johnny Marks put the poem to music and tried to get popular singers to perform it but no one would, insisting it was too juvenile. Finally, Gene Autry agreedto do the song in 1949. It went straight to the top of the Hit Parade. • Since then, over 300 different recordings have been made, with 80 million copies sold. The song is second only to “White Christmas” as the bestselling Christmas record of all time. Burl Ives even voiced-over a movie about it in 1964. It’s one of the first holiday songs children learn. What was the name they agreed on, now a famous Christmas character as well as a song? You guessed it: Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. But it’s a pretty safe bet you didn’t know that Rudolph was originally written to be a moose.

In 1939 the president of the Montgomery Ward department store chain asked his advertising copywriter to design a free gift that the hired Santas could hand out to the children who came to sit on Santa’s lap. Wenceslaus was canonized and is remembered in the song named after him, which factually details his act of sympathetic kindness toward a stranger. • The song “The 12 Days of Christmas” was originally sung as a game, with each person trying to remember all the gifts stated by those who had sung before him, singing them all in the correct order. Any mistakes meant that person was out of the game. The names of the gifts varied according to what could be made up on the spur of the moment. The original lyrics included “four colly birds.” A colly bird was derived from “coaly bird,” meaning sooty. Today the words have been Americanized to four calling birds.

Winter Feeding Tips: Feed the birds late in the day or first thing in the early morning, just before or after the cold night. Birds need food to stay warm. Watch for small flocks of juncos eating millet on the ground. Watch for nuthatches storing sunfower seeds and shelled nuts in the bark of tress for a late-winter snack. Cold weather means birds need more calories to stay warm and this means more activity at your feeder. All the birds that come up to your feeder want black-oil sunflower - birds like cardinals, chickadees, house finches and nuthatches. Black oil sunflower is like an electric blanket for your birds, and come winter they need it!

By Matthew Margolis

This is the month of Christmas, and everyone’s humming a holiday tune. Here’s a dog lover’s take on some all-time favorites: It Must Have Been the Mistletoe: No, this song isn’t about a dog that ate the mistletoe and spent Christmas Day with the vet. But it could be. Mistletoe and poinsettias are toxic to dogs (and cats). The results of ingestion range from oral irritation to respiratory distress to gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, vomiting and the potential for dehydration that follows such symptoms. Mistletoe poisoning is rare, but if consumed in large quantities, it can be fatal. Sleigh Ride: This one always gets me. I hear it and am compelled to remind parents everywhere that children should not be allowed to harness the family dog and have him drag them around the yard on a mock sled. It’s fun for the kid, not for the dog. O Christmas Tree: Oh, where to begin? The traditional Christmas tree, with its lights and tinsel and delicate ornaments, is too much temptation for some canines. Whether slurping the sap-infested water meant for the tree, barking at flashing lights or pawing at shiny strands of tinsel and dangling glass balls, Christmas trees and dogs go together like mistletoe and former lovers. Burn Little Candles: This sweet Chanukah song for kids also serves as a reminder for dog owners that flickering candles should never be left within reach of a wagging tail. Fire of any kind requires adult supervision. And remember to unplug those tree lights at night and when you aren’t home.

Holiday Tunes for Dog Lovers Jingle Bells, Silver Bells, Carol of the Bells: Bells, bells, bells! They’re enough to drive a pooch straight to the spiked eggnog. If your dog is shy, timid or nervous around noise, keep the bells to a minimum -- and not attached to his collar. Hard Candy Christmas: A holiday season without sweets is like Dolly Parton without the twang. But sugar and dogs don’t mix. Chocolate is toxic to most dogs, and candy canes and hard candy are simply indigestible objects for them to potentially choke on. Keep the candy dishes and boxes of chocolates safely beyond the reach of your four-legged companions. Baby, It’s Cold Outside -- And yes, the pooch still needs a walk, a romp and a good old-fashioned outdoor game of fetch. This tune should serve as a warning to anyone thinking of getting or giving a puppy for Christmas: A puppy means many, many trips outside each day and night, come rain, sleet or snow. Deck the Halls: If you must deck your halls with boughs of real holly, take precautions to keep the leaves and berries off the floors and away from pets. Otherwise, you just might falalalala all the way to the emergency animal hospital. Holly gets its own spot on this list because it is potentially fatal if ingested by your dog (or cat). Decorate with faux holly to make sure things stay jolly. Consider these tips and tunes as my holiday gift to you. Our pets are a part of our families. Taking the time to implement a handful of precautions this holiday season will help ensure that the most wonderful time of the year stays that way. Woof! (c) Creators.com

When a shark goes for a boat, it’s a case of mistaken identity: electrical impulses from the metal of a ship’s hull make the shark think that the boat is another animal (that is to say: dinner).

It was beloved American singer, songwriter and musician Ray Charles who made the following sage observation: “Marriage is like college; as great as it is, it ain’t for everybody.” * Those who study such things say that hen a llama is humming, that means it’s content.

Gentle Art of Gift Giving As Christmas draws near, it’s important to remember that not every relationship requires a gift. Sometimes a card or letter in which you write a thoughtful sentiment is an excellent way to go. Caring enough to pick out the right card and then taking the time and effort to write in it can say “I care!” even better than a gift could. Being a responsible gift-giver will help you to be an excellent recipient as well. Knowing that it’s the thought that went into the gift that counts -not the price tag -- will help you to be genuinely grateful. You cannot be too grateful. But you can fail to express your gratitude, and that’s always a bad thing. If you don’t know what to give someone, ask this simple question: What really matters to him or her? Let’s say your grandmother really loves animals. In fact, she volunteers at the shelter two days a week. She is passionate about animal rights. Donating any amount of money (or a few hours of your time) in her name to the animal shelter would probably make her break down and cry. She would be touched that you cared enough to figure out what really matters to her. GIVE SOMETHING YOU MADE. Whether it’s something from your kitchen, craft room, woodworking shop or computer, there’s nothing like a homemade gift. A tree ornament, plate of cook-

ies, box of fudge, note cards -- these are just some of the homemade gifts that have universal appeal. GIVE THE GIFT OF COMPASSION. Appeal to your recipient’s passion. Is this person passionate about medical research? Become a bone marrow donor. An environmentalist? Donate to an organization that reforests, and plant a tree in his or her name. Find something this person will find meaningful, and then do it in his or her honor. Write a description of your experience and give it to your recipient. GIVE WHAT YOU DO BEST. Often the most meaningful gifts and the most difficult ones to give are those that cost no money at all. A gift from the heart is a gift of time and talent. What do you do well? Cook, clean, babysit, garden, sew, drive, shop? Whatever it is, create a unique gift certificate and make what you do the gift that you give: a weekend of babysitting, a day of housecleaning, six hours of errand running. Follow up within just a few days to set the exact time your certificate will be redeemed. Your recipient may be too embarrassed to remind you to make good on the gift. GIVE IT WRITING. Worried that your gifts -homemade or otherwise -- are too cheap or not exactly right? All of your doubts will vanish when you include a short note with the gifts telling the recipients what they mean to you and the value they bring to your life. The best gift is one that delivers a message of love and joy that remains with the recipient long after the gift has been consumed, used, or put away!

CHRISTMAS...WORLD ~

cont’d from Page 3

• The Chlausjagen Festival or Feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated in Switzerland at dusk on December 6. The week before Christmas, children dress up and visit homes with gifts. Ringing church bells calling people to midnight mass has become a tradition, and each village competes with the next for the “best” bell ringing. After the service, families gather to share homemade doughnut pasteries called ringli, and down them with hot chocolate. • Christmas is an important event to the people of Malta and its sister Island of Gozo. Services are held in a Midnight Mass that features a nativity crib, called a ‘Presepju’, which is surrounded with figurines called ‘pastun’, representing Mary, Joseph, angels and shepherds.

• For many around the world, the Christmas season would just not be complete without viewing the 1946 Frank Capra movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”, starring James Stewart as the kindhearted but troubled and desperate George Bailey. The classic film captures the essence of the Christmas spirit, the priceless value of our lives, and the ways that we unkowingly effect the lives of others around us.

• Originally considered a box office flop at the time of its release, the film has come to be regarded as a classic and a staple of Christmas television around the world. It has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number one on their list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

Nugget of Knowledge

Why is Santa said to come down a chimney? Though the idea can be traced back before the famous 1823 poem, “The Night Before Christmas,” written for his own children by Clement C. Moore, most agree that his story popularized the notion of Santa’s arrival through the chimney. In it, Moore describes, “As I drew in my head and was turning around, down the chimney he came with a bound!”

“The Holly King, represents the Death aspect of the God at this time of year; and the Oak King, represents the opposite aspect of Rebirth (these roles are reversed at Midsummer). This can be likened to the Divine Child’s birth. The myth of the Holly King/Oak King probably originated from the Druids to whom these two trees were highly sacred. The Oak King (God of the Waxing Year) kills the Holly King (God of the Waning Year) at Yule (the Winter Solstice). The Oak King then reigns supreme until Litha (the Summer Solstice) when the two battle again, this time with the Holly King victorious. Examples of the Holly King’s image can be seen in our modern Santa Claus.”
