Welcome to day 2 of MotorsportDays LIVE 2019 Welcome to the second edition of The GRID from MotorsportDays LIVE 2019. This publication is a great new addition to our on-track show package, bringing all competitors and visitors up-to-speed with the latest show news as it happens in Silverstone’s Pit Lane garages or throughout the halls of the Silverstone Wing. We are delighted to host another busy day on track, in the exhibition halls and conference arena. MSVT’s Stuart Garland and Classic Sports Car Club’s Hugo Holder kick off the conference agenda, focusing on track days and getting into motorsport. This is an apt topic as the Silverstone Pit Lane Garages will be packed with some incredible horsepower – ranging from a McLaren 570S GT4 car to a Mini; a Ferrari 488 to a Ford Focus. Once again, the ProDrift Academy will conclude every trackday session, showing our MotorsportDays LIVE visitors a different racing line.

Ben Whibley Founder, MotorsportDays LIVE

A new section of motorsport that is being showcased this year for the first time here at Silverstone is Esports. Adam Suswillo, just back from Tokyo where he has been competing for the Williams Esports team, will be talking about his life in the newest addition to the Formula One family. Visitors can also try out Williams sim stations for themselves in Hall One. Russell Howard and John Paul Latham of RaceStaff.com and Student Motorsport respectively, will be offering some salient advice in the lunchtime conference panel. Taking that first step in the motorsport industry is even more daunting than racing around Stowe Corner here at Silverstone. Backing up their wise words will be plenty of educational support in Hall Two in our new-look Education and Recruitment Zone. Here you will find the National Motorsport Academy plus several leading motorsport further education colleges. Although if it is more technical education you are after, why not check out the Power Maxed Racing garage (G39) where this talented team, in association with Absolute Alignment, are offering invaluable car set-up clinics? So, whether you are just starting out on your motorsport journey or looking to upgrade your horsepower for next season, MotorsportDays LIVE 2019 is the place to be. Explore every inch of the Silverstone Wing inside and out as our packed agendas have one simple aim – to get you out on track and on that podium!

Turkington prepared for sacrifices BTCC demands After the second race of the British Touring Car Championship finale at Brands Hatch, Colin Turkington cut a forlorn figure in the paddock as his West Surrey Racing squad bustled about preparing for the 30th, and final race of the season.

Turkington, in a three-way title fight with team-mate Andrew Jordan and Team Dynamics star Dan Cammish had suffered the worst possible fate in the race.

finale, as Cammish moved ahead in the points.

Making a lightening start, Turkington had vaulted his BMW 330i into second place, behind Cammish, whose own team-mate Matt Neal was leading the gaggle of drivers behind into Graham Hill bend in the damp conditions.

Of course, what followed will go down in motorsport history as one of the great championship deciders (unless you are Dan Cammish), but as Turkington reflected on his achievement of equalling Andy Rouse with a record four BTCC drivers’ titles, the 37-year-old is keen to tackle 2020 with ever-increasing levels of motivation and commitment.

Neal nudged Turkington’s rear, ruining the WSR man’s race, coming home a despondent 25th, leaving him well-down the 30-car field for the

“It is just competitive spirit,” he says. “You sign up to try and win but it is not always easy to take yourself to that uncomfortable place where

you’ve got to be prepared to make sacrifices and do things you don’t want to do. “You’ve got to put in a lot of effort and hard-work to try and win this championship. I think it is just bred into me, to keep fighting and I suppose the good thing is to keep trying to improve myself each other, and naturally you’ve got to work hard to do that. “I’m aware of how quickly the game moves on and how competitive the championship, so it always trying to work harder than the others and that has been a good approach for me.”

LUCKY WINNER in The GRID Daily prize draw The GRID Daily held a prize draw on its stand (H160) yesterday. The lucky winner was Andy Blackwell, Operations Manager, JRM Group (stand H355), who received an Amazon Echo Dot. He said: “I’m taken aback. My first instinct was to ignore the phone call from Jon Lassetter (Publisher of The GRID Daily) as I didn’t recognise the number. I might buy a lottery ticket on the way home, as I never normally have this luck. It’s an unexpected pleasure – I’m well chuffed!” Leave your business card at The GRID Daily stand for another chance to win an Amazon Echo Dot today!

Radical racetrack experience for MotorsportDays LIVE’s Ben Whibley MotorsportDays LIVE Founder Ben Whibley took a Radical SR1 on an exhilarating drive around Silverstone International yesterday. “For an entry level model, it got me wanting more and wanting to push the car beyond its boundaries,” he said. “A lot of cars I’ve driven that are entry level, have left me feeling short-changed. However, for an experienced driver the Radical SR1 is still enough. I’d like to thank Radical for allowing me to drive the car and experience its potential, which you as a visitor to MotorsportDays LIVE can do – visit Garage G-24 & 25.

Series Elite fields Jaguar Project 8 race cars in GT Cup Bute Motorsport is delighted to welcome the Series Elite Jaguar XE SVProject 8 race cars onto its GT Cup Championship grid for 2020. After a season spent developing and testing the Series Elite Jaguar XE SV Project 8 race cars, the team has made the decision to join the well-established GT Cup series in the GTA class. The Racing Project 8s are based on 5.0 litre supercharged V8 Jaguar XE SV Project 8 road cars supplied by Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations. Project 8 holds several records for a four door production car, including The Nurburgring at 7 min 18.361 secs. The race cars are stored and prepared by Slidesport (2018 Porsche Carrera Cup Champions) who initially converted them to Series Elite specifications at their centralised team facility in Staffordshire. The Series Elite race cars have been developed on Pirelli Trofeo tyres, which have proved to be a huge success in terms of increased grip and wear. The decision to join GT Cup for 2020 was decided after a recent meeting with the Bute Motorsport organisers at their head office facility in Sparkford, Somerset. Chris Haynes, Managing Director, Bute Motorsport, said: “We are delighted to welcome Series Elite into GT Cup, they offer a very exciting package for sporting drivers and they will fit beautifully into our GTA Group. The cars and drivers will enjoy the comradery and sporting ethos that helps make the GT Cup so special.” Series Elite CEO Graeme Glew said: “We knew from the start that Jaguar XE SVSVO’s Project 8 cars would be ideal

for our level of clients. After spending 2019 testing and developing the cars and racing the four cars we had at Silverstone, we are now ready to race. Currently, we have six cars in race trim and Special Vehicle Operations have a limited number of road cars that could be converted to race specification by Series Elite. Having spoken to our drivers and potential clients it is clear that they are enthusiastic about GT Cup with longer races and larger grids, so our small fleet of Jaguars will fall into Group GTA of the GT Cup Championship which is great news.”

Introducing Alexandra Legouix: The face of MotorsportDays LIVE TV Alexandra Legouix is probably best known as the main face and pitlane reporter for Eurosport's live coverage of the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). However, over the next couple of days she will heading up MotorsportDays LIVE TV. A regular contributor already to the MotorsportDays annuals, Alex will be able to cover every angle of the show this year, from pitlane garage to exhibition hall, from live in-car reporting direct from the racetrack to conference interviews.

Alex’s WTCR work has seen her travel the globe, taking in 10 different countries in a season. In addition to this major undertaking the popular presenter hosts this Championship’s YouTube series, All Access Live. In addition, this season Alex presented an exciting new series for Barrett Jackson & Bentley celebrating Bentley's Centenary Anniversary. This show took her to Pikes Peak, Pebble Beach, Laguna Seca and most recently, she drove the new Continental GT through New York as part of the enormous Bentley Parade. The show will be released later this month. Alex has covered all areas of motorsport as is now viewed as one of the most well-rounded of female motorsports hosts in the industry. Over the years she has presented

WRC All Live for the World Rally Championship. She presented the Dakar for Red Bull TV. She presented World Rallycross for Eurosport. Alex is also no stranger to the world of Formula One either, she started her motorsport career as a presenter at the McLaren Technology Centre, before moving on to becoming the presenter for the main screens at Singapore F1 and interviewer for the Formula 1 drivers’ parade for the World feed. She also co-presented the inaugural series of F1 Esports. For OnlyMotors TV, Alex recently found herself battling fellow MotorsportDays LIVE host Louise Goodman in a head-to-head ice driving competition which Alex won. Apparently a new contest is being

planned for these leading motorsport presenters – this time in a stunt driving competition! Additionally, Alex is the creator and host of the newly released “Mindset Unfiltered” podcast which brings you raw, open, honest and unfiltered chats from some of our greatest racers including Carlos Sainz, Andy Priaulx, Yvan Muller, Gordon Shedden and many more. When not reporting from the pit lanes in an array of world class motorsport Alex focuses on her other great love, yoga. A qualified yoga instructor, she owns a yoga and meditation studio in Surrey. She has also released three top-rated yoga DVDs selling on Amazon, in HMV and in supermarkets worldwide. She is also the monthly yoga columnist for BestFit Magazine.

Using data to give you the

COMPETITIVE EDGE

Whether we like it or not, data is playing an increasing role in modern motorsport – and not just at the top level. The falling cost of in-car camera gear and performance monitoring systems means that the technology is now trickling into grassroots series. “Nowadays if you don’t have video and data systems in your car you’re not going to be as competitive as the guys at the front of the grid,” said Jon Holman, Motorsport Product Manager at Racelogic, whose camera systems and performance meters are fitted to cars competing in the Porsche GT3 Cup. Racelogic’s VBOX systems have various applications. In the Porsche GT3 Cup they are used to provide real-time footage of on-track incidents, which can be replayed by stewards to decide if a driver needs to be penalised or not. Of more interest to drivers, perhaps, is the system’s ability to provide lapby-lap performance data.

This can then be interpreted back in the paddock to inform car setup and help drivers identify where they can improve on the track. The VBOX system synchronises in-car camera footage with data gathered by the performance meters to provide a complete picture of a driver’s performance. “It’s a lot easier than going through hours of GoPro footage,” said Holman. As well as providing drivers with performance monitoring systems, Racelogic also offers training to help racers interpret their data. The GRID understands that Racelogic will soon launch a new low- system aimed at the amateur market,

11

though the company is being coy about the details. “We’re making it more affordable for the club racing market,” said Holman. “That’s all we can say at the moment.”

DAY 2 Saturday 2nd November 2019

Interview: with

Hugh Chambers, CEO Motorsport UK By Jake Nichol You mentioned about what steps Motorsport UK is taking in regard to the environmental lobby. Can you elaborate on this? Hugh Chambers, CEO Motorsport UK: “The first step in anything regarding sustainability and the environment is to make sure you have a strategy. My most recent role was at the Federation for World Sailing and the first step we did then was very clearly identify what the issues are and then, in terms of what the strategic imperatives are for us. I’ll be perfectly honest, in inheriting Motorsport UK, or the MSA as it was last year, we didn’t have a clear strategy around sustainability, but it is something we are in the process of developing now. “I think there are some really good stories around sustainability for motorsport that we haven’t shouted about enough. For example, we are out to tender at the moment for an electric engine propulsion system, so the battery control system, the engine, for karting, with a view to introducing an electric karting series next year.” Wales Rally GB. That was announced as staying in Wales for next year, can you comment on what is going to happen beyond next year? Chambers: “Not at this stage. We’ve been quite transparent with the fact that our contract with the Welsh government gives us the flexibility to be able to take it to other regions in the UK. As you know, we are the commercial promoter for Wales Rally GB for the WRC round in the UK and it is about a £3 million enterprise to put on the rally, so we need to have the right level of financial support.

“We have to find a region or one of the home countries that can provide that support and so there are discussions going on with other areas in the UK about potential for the future, but at this stage, the only certainty is that we’ll be in Wales next year.” The World Rallycross Championship came to Silverstone a couple of years ago, but on the WRX calendar released yesterday, there is no British round. Is the British round being dropped? Is it going back to Lydden Hill? Chambers: “It won’t be going back to Lydden. I think the statements are pretty clear there won’t be a UK round of World Rallycross Championship in 2020. I think you’d need to talk to the FIA and the promoters to have their view on it. “I think it is a real shame. I think we are unique in the world in the number of FIA world championship events that we have in the UK, with Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship, World Rally Championship, and also, next year, Formula E which is very exciting. It is a real shame that we are losing World Rallycross but I hope it will be back in the future.” Anything you’d like to add about MotorsportDays LIVE? Chambers: “I think this event is absolutely brilliant, because it shows an innovative approach. If there is one thing that we need to do with motorsport in this country is think outside the box, if we keep on doing the same old thing, we won’t get anywhere.”

BLOODHOUND TESTING UNDERWAY, 800MPH WITHIN REACH At the end of October 2018, the Bloodhound project was in dire straits, with the project on the verge of being canned and the car cut-up for scrap.

Given the right conditions, Bloodhound LSR engineers have predicted that the eight-tonne vehicle, with driver Andy Green in situ, could take off. And then burn its fuel to reach 25,000ft. Whilst travelling vertically.

But then businessman Ian Warhurst stepped in, with two days to spare, re-christened the project from Bloodhound SSC to LSR. Warhurst elected to keep the car running and attempt to break the current landspeed record of 763mph on its way to trying to max the speedo out at 1,000mph. Team member Tony Parraman, who is flying out to join the rest of the team on-site at the Hakskeen Pan in northern South Africa on Saturday, explained at MotorsportDays Live the effort the team have put in to attempt to shatter driver Andy Green’s existing land-speed record.

“We used Google Earth and NASA data to find 20 suitable sites that had to be 12 miles long and three miles wide,” explained Parraman. “We narrowed that down to seven, where Andy went on honeymoon and scouted the locations. Eventually, we opted for the Hakskeen Pan.” With phase one testing well underway, the car reached 461mph on Friday morning, with the expectation of 500mph being reached this week a realistic goal. 800mph, and the new record is expected in the next 18 months, before further budget must be raised to propel the car and Green to 1,000mph, which Parraman expects to cost just the £10million or so…

WSR to continue to run third car in 2020 - Bennetts British Touring Car Championship team champions West Surrey Racing will continue to run a third car in 2020, despite Andrew Jordan’s sponsorship worries, team boss Dick Bennetts has confirmed. Jordan’s long-time sponsor Pirtek announced that it would cease its backing of the 2013 champion at the end of the ’19 season, leaving his future at WSR in doubt. Speaking to The GRID Daily, Bennetts confirmed Colin Turkington and Tom Oliphant will have another team-mate in 2020, as WSR looks to defend both titles for a second successive season. “We’d like to keep running Andy,” said Bennett. “We like him, he likes us, but

the bottom line is that we have to try and run it as a business, and we are trying to generate some sponsorship. We do have another three or four drivers ready to go [into the car].” Bennetts would not be drawn on the identity of the drivers WSR is negotiating with, conceding one “is a current BTCC driver”. “We also have a new young lad who wants to start with us, but I think it is a year too early for him,” explained Bennetts. “He is very good, but I think he just needs a year of something else, and then come to us. I’m not sure when we will make the announcement but are hoping to have it all finished by the end of November. We can then go home and have a holiday!”

PROFLEX:

Becoming chosen fuel tank supplier to the historic race market Proflex Advanced Technology UK Ltd, received full FIA Safety Fuel Bladder Tank accreditation in September 2018 and the company was officially launched to the world of motorsport at this year’s Autosport Engineering Show in January. “After only 10 months, Proflex Advanced Technology is soon becoming the chosen fuel tank supplier to the historic race market,” explains Kevin Molloy, Managing Director, Proflex Advanced Technology UK Ltd. Despite Proflex Advanced Technology UK Ltd being “new kids on the block”, their existing management team have over 50 years’ experience within the Fuel Bladder Tank industry and are always developing new ideas and innovations to be one step ahead of the game. “If any race or rally team have any fuel systems concerns or just want to ensure what systems they are using are still correct, them come over to the Proflex stand (H342) and have a chat with the friendly technical sales team,” says Molloy. Proflex is launching its ‘Reverse-Flex Engineering’ at MotorsportDays LIVE 2019, to offer customers an easy ordering system – the customer simply returns an old Fuel Bladder Tank and Proflex will replicate it. “If an existing Carbon or Alloy Tank requires a bladder tank, then the customer can just send this back,” says Molloy.

Proflex Advanced Technology’s Simon Dewar, and Kevin Molloy, Managing Director.

“The beauty is that the customer does not even have to go to the inconvenience of creating a drawing.” Proflex is also launching its Refuelology range of products – with so much energy and time being spent to speed up refuelling times, Proflex can discuss any quick refuelling project to ensure that the customer is achieving the optimum performance. “One 750MC Race Team managed to shave off a whopping 80 seconds!” Some of the fun projects that Proflex has worked on this year include the

20

new and beautiful Alpine A110RGT Car (Proflex is the official FIA homologated Fuel Bladder Tank supplier for this vehicle), working with a Historic F1 Team and helping break lap records at almost every event that the car raced at. “On the subject of F1, Proflex has also been heavily involved in the best kept secret of all, and that is bringing Formula 1 to the Trackday racer! More details on the Trackday F1 Car will be announced over the coming weeks,” Molloy adds.

RECORD-BREAKING ENTRIES FOR 750 MOTOR CLUB the evergreen Locost, MR2, Formula Vee and Hot Hatch – the latter bolstered by an influx of returning Mk2 Golf GTis. The 2019 season has also showcased an extremely promising start for new offerings Type-R Trophy, Ma7da Locost and 116 Trophy, while Bikesports has grown to become the UK’s bestsupported championship for sportsracing cars.

The 2019 season has seen recordbreaking entries for the 750 Motor Club, in the 80th anniversary year since the Club’s formation in 1939.

The 2019 season has seen recordbreaking entries for the 750 Motor Club, in the 80th anniversary year since the Club’s formation in 1939. The 200 strong entry list for April’s single-day meeting at Donington Park followed on from the busy Brands Hatch season opener; with near-capacity grids spanning the majority of formulae in attendance – something that continued throughout the year with 21 formulae’s seasons playing out across 18 different race meetings. Club Enduro continued to lead the way as the UK’s biggest championship with a title battle that went all the way to a finale here on Silverstone’s full GP circuit last week, while a move to championship status for 2019 has allowed BMW Car Club Racing’s grids to flourish alongside

Having joined 750MC for 2019 onwards and filling a space in the Club’s line-up for a cost-effective ‘slicks & wings’ single seater, the F1000 championship has enjoyed one of their most successful seasons of the recent era. Paddock numbers were boosted not only by immediately attracting a handful of current 750MC members – indeed the 2019 title was eventually secured by former Sport Specials champion Matthew Booth in his inaugural F1000 season – but no fewer than three familiar teams from the 750MC paddock extended their services into the formula, buying cars to support new drivers. New for 2019 has been the introduction of live-streaming at nine race days across the season, including the capacity grid Birkett Relay. The coverage offered unprecedented viewing numbers and exposure for formulae and drivers alike, while new 2019 sponsorbacked prize giveaways have ensured a valuable benefits package for 750MC competitors. The Club’s official 80th anniversary celebrations took place at September’s Donington Park National meeting, where heritage members were tasked with bringing 80 racing

23

and roadgoing Austin Sevens as a tribute to 750MC and UK club-level motorsport’s formative years, in a Sunday track parade. 2020 and beyond 750 Motor Club was delighted to announce last month that the Alfa Romeo Championship will transfer to 750 Motor Club from 2020 onwards – the formula’s 39th consecutive year. With nearly four decades of racing history, the Alfa Romeo Championship features a grid spanning a huge variety of different models from the Italian marque, as well as allowing competitors with Fiat, Abarth and Lancia machinery. Three main classes cater for the different models in addition to the Italian Invitation class, meaning that grids include everything from a 33 to a Mito – indeed there are two Alfa models on track and in the 750MC garages here at MSDLive today. Huge interest from current competitors and those looking for a cost-effective but quick onemake formula means that 2019’s new Ma7da Locost offering will run on its own standalone grids for the 2020 season. The series offers Locost competitors or new builders an affordable 140bhp package in the same lightweight chassis with a tightly-regulated conversion kit and locked ECU. Visit 750MC in Garages 31, 32 and 33 here at MSDLive to find out more about the different formulae on offer, whether you are looking for a new championship after decades in race paddocks, or taking your first steps into competitive motorsport.

FIRE SAFETY WITHOUT THE BAGGAGE While safety comes first in motorsport, the last thing a driver needs is a fire extinguisher weighing them down. That’s where Lifeline comes in. A specialist in motorsport safety systems, the brand has developed a new breed of lightweight fire extinguisher that promises not to hold drivers back. Mandatory for use in WRC, WRX and GT3, the systems weigh about the same as three bags of sugar, but will put out a sizeable blaze should the worst happen. Parts of the system were designed by Michael Schumacher’s aero

engineer, who knows only too well the importance of keeping things light in the cockpit. “We approach everything we make with a racer’s mentality, we’re always looking to reduce weight,” explained Alec Parr, Sales Manager. Though it specialises in fire equipment, Lifeline has, more recently, turned its attention to developing lightweight safety harnesses. Appropriately enough, given the location for this event, each of Lifeline’s harnesses have been named after a corner of Silverstone Circuit – and all are made in Britain.

Slip into something more comfortable Choosing the right racing seat is one of the most important decisions a driver has to make – and not just from a comfort perspective. “Seats also offer a certain amount of protection for drivers,” explained Ed Little, Operations & Procurement at Corbeau. “One of our customers rolled his car seven times and after the crash all he had was a cut in his knee which required a few stitches – the seat helped protect him.” Founded in Hastings in 1963, Corbeau supplies some of the biggest names in motorsport. Their racing seats can be custom made to suit individual drivers and, for style-conscious racers, there is also the option of adding embellishments such as name embroidering and custom stitching. Corbeau is inviting drivers to visit its stand and sink into some of its seats. “This is a good opportunity to come and try the seats on for size, so to speak,” said Little.

BOSS RACING:

A successful season and thriving track days Boss Racing runs cars in the Classic Sports Cars Club (CSCC) ‘Magnificent Sevens’ series – the fastest Caterham series in the world. The top category features cars with over 300hp capable of 160mph on road tyres. Boss Racing has just built a CSR version running a Boss Racing developed 370hp, 2.5-litre supercharged Ford Duratec engine, so the cars are spectacular.

Its season has featured many wins, including a double 1-2 at Dijon and the closest-ever finish in CSCC history with three of its cars covered by 0.2 seconds to take all three podium places at the Brands Hatch GP circuit meeting. Next year includes rounds at Spa and, for the first time, a meeting on the LeMans Bugatti circuit. As well as engine development, Boss Racing also designs suspension components in-house, and this season saw the debut of its new damper designed in partnership with Quantum Racing. This new damper has a separate spring height and ride height, allowing adjustment of droop to help squat, roll and traction. As well as the race team, the track day side has been thriving and Boss Racing will have two of its hire cars running on both days available for hot lap rides with its race drivers, including a race prepared Caterham R500. If you are feeling brave, come and see them!

Getting track time without going outside Drivers can never get enough track time under their belts, but as simulators get ever-more realistic, they are becoming a valuable tool for racers looking to gain that competitive edge. And the best bit? You can do a fast lap of Silverstone without getting out your jogging bottoms. Showcasing its latest generation of simulators is FP Zero, which is giving visitors the opportunity to race around a virtual Brands Hatch. “The simulators are great for drivers who can only get on the track a few days a year, or drivers who are preparing for a race weekend,” said Lewis Plato, FP Zero Ambassador. Plato would know. He competes in the Porsche Carrera Cup and has used the simulators to hone his track skills. “You can practice things like tyre weaving and even simulate different car set ups,” he explained. As well as driver development, the simulators can be used for corporate events and E-sports racing competitions. “E-sports events take place around the same time as the real race meetings and are becoming really popular,” said Plato.

Finding the RIGHT BALANCE Power Maxed Racing and Absolute Alignment are running set-up clinics in their garage to steer drivers in the right direction when it comes to setting up cars. “We find out what they want to do with the car and talk to them about things like ride height and corner weights,” explained Martin Broadhurst, Team Manager, Power Maxed Racing. The last round of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) was won by Jason Plato in his Power Maxed Racing Astra. “It’s good for us to be going into the winter with that win,” said Broadhurst. Sharing a garage with Power Maxed Racing is Absolute Alignment, which supplies advanced garage equipment, including a digital wheel alignment system. “It’s more accurate than using the traditional string – and quicker too,” explained Chris Dear, Technical Sales Manager.

All they have to do is turn up and drive.” That arrangement seems to be working well for some owners, who have recently claimed victories at the Ferrari World Finals, Ferrari European Challenge and Britcar Endurance Championship. FF Corse also has its own cars, which it rents out for track days and race meetings.

Keeping a lid on it You can’t go racing without a helmet, but a good skid lid costs a pretty penny these days, adding to the financial burden already facing drivers. Keeping costs low without compromising on safety is George Richardson, an ex-racing driver, who set up Helmet 28, a distribution company that specialises in affordable racing gear. “I called it Helmet 28 because 28 was my racing number,” said

Richardson. “We’re committed to saving people money and providing people with affordable gear.” Made by ZAMP, the skid lids sold by Helmet 28 are either FIA or Snell approved and start from around £219 (including VAT) for a full face helmet. “I would say that’s about 35% cheaper than our closest competitor,” said Richardson, who sponsors Sam Tordoff of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC).

DAY 2 Saturday 2nd November 2019

Racing Pride looking forward to expanding motorsport diversity Journalist Christopher Sharp and driver Richard Morris, the proponents of Racing Pride, worked on the assumption they would “get a ton of abuse” when they decided to unveil the scheme midway through the year, with Sharp describing support for what they are trying to achieve as “90% positive and 10% negative”. Helped and endorsed by figures such as Charlie Martin, Matt Bishop and Autosport.com Editor Matt Beer, Racing Pride is confident of expanding and opening itself up to “a greater diversity of series”. With a household name joining the team as a driver ambassador, Sharp and Morris are excited about the opportunities other series in motorsport present. Six months after launching, Racing Pride is now the premier activity for fostering LGBT inclusivity in motorsport, with those behind it optimistic as another big-name figure prepares to come aboard.

“We want a lot more,” says Morris. “We’d love to be more involved in rallying, rallycross and motorbikes. There is a lot of resistance when people see topics they are uncertain with. There has been positivity from the motorsport community. We already have more allies than we imagined.”

TACTIC CONNECT: Leading the way in sports law With clients such as ex-Formula 1 driver Max Chilton and multiple rallying teams using Tactic Connect’s services, the education level of sports law in motorsport is continuing to evolve for the better. CEO Genevieve Gordon, a trained sports lawyer, is offering clients “a variety of educational packages in the business side of motorsport”. “A lot of drivers and teams think they are being paid through sponsorship,” she tells The GRID Daily. “But in fact, they are being used to endorse a product or they could ask for more money for their services. “Our bundles, available here to buy provide a set formula as what to ask, including in commercial and endorsement contracts, IP and image rights. “These are the foundations of the motorsport business. We offer clients 12 different packages and classes. We can come to your business or you can visit our purpose-built education centre in Nottingham, where in both instances, we provide full or half day workshops and masterclasses, all faceto-face.”
