A huge thank you from

MotorsportDays LIVE! Wow – what a show! MotorsportDays LIVE 2019 has just hosted 150 exhibitors, witnessed more than 200 cars on track, everything from Mini’s to McLarens, and welcomed some 3,500 dedicated motorsport visitors through the doors of the Silverstone Wing. There were several highlights for me personally. One has to be the opportunity to take the Radical SR1 out on track on Friday. Radical was just one of the many championships and car clubs offering prospective racers the chance to test a series before signing for a season. It is this ability to get out on track that makes MotorsportDays LIVE so different from its competitors.

Ben Whibley Founder, MotorsportDays LIVE

Another stand-out moment both on track and in the conference area was the appearance of the 2019 BTCC Champion, Colin Turkington. Not only did Colin and team-mate Tom Oliphant get in some useful laps in their BMWs in readiness for next year’s BTCC series, which will feature the International Circuit here for the first time, but we had a chance to be inspired when Colin joined West Surrey Racing team boss Dick Bennetts for an afternoon conference session on how to win a championship. I was also blown away by Team Brits incredible hand controls system. Dave Player generously allowed me to test it live on track in a VW Polo and I was amazed by its ability. Not once did my feet go for the pedals, such was my confidence in this incredible bit of kit. There was more impressive tech in our Engineering and Technology Show, which was new for 2019. These busy exhibition halls were the perfect accompaniment to the packed pit lane garages. Innovations and technical wizardry were to the fore, with several brands using the show to launch new products. We also reflected the increasing importance of simulators and e-sports, highlighting the show’s motto, “getting you on track”. Add in an enhanced education and training zone and MotorsportDays LIVE really was all things to all drivers. So a huge thank you to everyone that attended, exhibited and supported this second edition of MotorsportDays LIVE. You have inspired us and we are already planning MotorsportDays LIVE 2020. Dates will be announced soon but in the meantime, enjoy your time on track.

Oliphant determined to change motorsport business attitudes An interview with

Tom Oliphant By Jake Nichol “People are recognising us for the work we are doing and approaching us, without even knowing I am involved, which is brilliant, because now I can just be the icing on the cake with my experience rather than the full-focus of why people use us.” direction. That wasn’t exactly a hard sell, but they bought into us, because they bought into me and they trust me.

Tell me about Next Level Motorsport, the business side of things. Where did the inspiration come from? Thinking behind it?

“People are recognising us for the work we are doing and approaching us, without even knowing I am involved, which is brilliant, because now I can just be the icing on the cake with my experience rather than the full-focus of why people use us.”

Tom Oliphant: “I started Next Level Motorsport off the back of my experience in racing. I found that through my journey up through the junior formulas, there were some very, very good drivers that were falling by the wayside.

Where do you see Next Level going in the next couple of years?

“I sorted of looked at why that was and ultimately, I found it was because they were just running out of budget and they were focusing on everything other than the business side.

Oliphant: “I want to build my business model on the Jakob Ebery model. Everybody knows Jakob is one of the best photographers, and because he hires five or six different photographers at each round, if you hire Jakob, you are going to get a shot of everything you need.

“I started the company to try and help motorsport as a whole act better in the business side of motorsport. Currently, a lot of drivers and teams treat it as a charity, where they believe if they do well enough, they can effectively beg for money to live their dream and that is just not going to get any results, especially not at BTCC or British GT level. What we aim to do is help drivers to act more like a business, we provide all the marketing materials they need to sell sponsorship, plus all the education, which is incredibly important.”

“I want to be the same thing. I want to have five, six, or 10 PR guys on the ground at BTCC and British GT so that we can take care of 20-30 clients and, as a result, everybody gets a great service. “There are a lot of people in the British GT and BTCC paddocks that can still use our help. There’s a couple of ideas in my head to try and bring new sponsorship into the motorsport industry that hasn’t been done before and we’ll see how that goes.

In the Touring Car paddock, how has what you’ve been doing been received? Oliphant: “It has been really well received. Initially just like any business, you have to focus on your ‘quick wins’. Mine were quickly using the network of teams and drivers I’ve been involved with to suggest that they go in this

“Our philosophy is to help drivers be the best they can be. I’m always available on phone or email to help people out.”

RAF MOTORSPORT: Building team-work Chris Slator, representing the RAF, testing for the next Armed Forces Challenge.

An interview with RAF Motorsport’s Chris Slator By Jake Nichol

Chris, how did RAF Motorsport start? What was the logic behind it?

predominantly competing in the Armed Forces Race Challenge, which is a championship for military and veterans.

Chris Slator: “The RAF Motorsport association has been running since the 1960s. We are a club affiliated with the national governing body and we have disciplines from car racing to karts, rallying, road racing, motorbikes, enduros and off-road, and we’ve just had a lad start in British Rallycross in the Mini Cooper class.

“We’re predominantly owner/drivers and who self-engineer and selflogistic cars.”

“I look after the motor racing team. We have about 25 active competitors who are all serving RAF people,

What are the views of the bigwigs at the MOD? What is their stance on this? Slator: “Sport is really important in all three military services, because it gives that competitive element, while also giving an opportunity to blow off steam while building teamwork and allowing people to push themselves.

“The Air Force has 48 different sports associations, of which motorsport is one. They range from football to rugby union. We compete as individuals to represent the RAF in the Armed Forces Challenge and then we have the inter-services at the end of the year in the Birkett Six Hour Relay, where you find out which service is best.” Who won that last time? Slator: “We won it for two years, but the Army won it last weekend, we had a few mechanical issues. The Navy came second, and we were the second loser!”
