A new study has revealed motorsport’s significant contribution to the Australian economy, with a total gross annual output of $8.6 billion.

With the national economy looking to rebuild after a difficult two years, Australian motorsport is primed to lead the charge for the sporting industry.

Ernst and Young prepared the global study on four-wheeled motorsport together with the FIA and Motorsport Australia, Karting Australia and the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA). Locally, it was found that the motorsport industry

provides $3.1 billion in direct output, while providing $5.5 billion of indirect output based on pre-COVID figures.

The industry also supported 16,900 direct jobs and a further 29,900 indirect jobs in 2019, the year the study was based on.

The sport also enjoyed support from approximately 18,900 unpaid officials and volunteers, creating a total workforce of 65,700.

The Ernst and Young study looked at a range of factors, further emphasising the importance of the Australian

motorsport industry on the country’s overall economy.

Between Motorsport Australia, ANDRA and Karting Australia, the sport has a strong foothold across the country with a reported 188,112 people participating in the sport in 2019.

The financial contribution of each competitor and their input to the overall economy is estimated at approximately $20,000 per year on expenses related to their

involvement in the sport (not including vehicle purchases) such as travel, maintenance, food and beverages, as well as race meetings.

At a state level, New South Wales and Victoria were the biggest contributors in 2019, with the two states responsible for more than 50 per cent of the sport’s national economic value with around 97,000 active participants.

In 2019, prior to the COVID shutdowns, 9650 events were held throughout the country via the three Governing bodies with events in both rural and metropolitan regions attracting thousands of competitors each week.

Given the high level of events, a variety of industries outside of the sport such as tourism, hospitality, retail and entertainment venues at local, state and national levels all benefit from motorsport’s presence, providing a significant and positive impact on a large number of communities.

The findings compare favourably to the most recent survey undertaken in 2014.

That survey revealed motorsport had a direct output of $2.7 billion dollars to the Australian economy, highlighting the rapid rise of the sport’s growth, with approximately $400 million more now being spent on an annual basis.

With COVID impacting 2020 and 2021, motorsport has a unique opportunity to play a key role in the economic recovery of Australia, with competitors ready and eager to start racing, travelling and spending in the coming 12 months.

INDIGENOUS FLAGS RAISED AT MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA HOUSE Motorsport Australia has recently further highlighted its ongoing commitment to social and cultural unity and cohesion, permanently raising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at its Melbourne headquarters.

A Welcome To Country and Smoking Ceremony to commemorate the occasion was conducted by Aboriginal elder, Aunty Dianne Kerr, an Indigenous Australian Wurundjeri Elder who identifies with the Ganun Willam Balak clan.

ANOTHER FIA TOP GONG FOR AUSTRALIA Australia had yet another individual internationally recognised in November with Henk van den Dungen crowned as the 2021 FIA Senior Official of the Year.

Having been involved with the sport for 55 years, van den Dungen has undertaken almost every role possible as an official, with his most notable being the many years as the National Clerk of Course at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.

From the moment the Victorian joined, he was hooked on motorsport and spent as much time as possible at many race meetings so he could soak up everything there was to know about the sport.

Starting off as a flag marshal and then sector marshal, the talented official progressed through the ranks to

eventually become a Clerk of Course - a role he has held for more than 40 years.

In 1985, van den Dungen had done enough to secure the position of National Clerk of Course at the Australian Grand Prix and has performed admirably in that role ever since.

Throughout his time, van den Dungen has experienced many unforgettable memories.

“What I have enjoyed most about being an official, especially at the Grand Prix, is the camaraderie amongst all the volunteer officials,” van den Dungen explained.

“It’s all about the friends you make. The crew that goes to the Grand Prix every year and the friendships you make are just 100 per cent and I love it.

“Our Grand Prix is special because we have such a terrific team who love what they do and have a lot of fun each year – which for me is what it’s all about.

“What always stuck with me was that the late great Charlie Whiting (former Formula 1 Race Director) used to love coming to our event because he knew he didn’t have to worry about the circuit as he had complete faith in us as operators.

“I wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world and honestly, it’s the most exciting thing I do all year.” van den Dungen’s award sees him join a long list of Australians to receive an international honour by the FIA, including Roger Chirnside and Steve Chopping.

Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca praised van den Dungen for the award and paid tribute to Australian officials.

“Henk is fantastic at what he does and is certainly deserving of this award,” Arocca said.

“The continued success and growth of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix is reflective of Henk’s selfless devotion and commitment to the event, as he volunteers much of his personal time to many months of pre-event planning and organising.

“Henk is a wonderful leader. He has a wealth of knowledge and has an excellent ability to both manage critical situations and keep the schedule on time, which is a testament to his many years at the highest level of the sport.

“We may not have had a Grand Prix for the last two years, but he has still showcased his talents at many other events throughout the year, which is why it’s fitting that the FIA has honoured Henk.

“To have another Australian recognised internationally is fantastic for our sport and I couldn’t be prouder of Henk and all of our officials for doing what they do.

“This form of recognition confirms the high regard in which our Motorsport Australia officials are held, both here and internationally.”

MAYBERRY ADDS ANOTHER AWARD TO GLOWING RESUME Ian Mayberry became the latest Motorsport Australia official to be recognised with a general state award last month after being named as the recipient of the 2021 Queensland Service to Sport Award.

Mayberry was one of 12 winners celebrated during the Queensland Sport Awards dinner, which recognises the outstanding achievements of Queenslanders each year in sport within the state and around the country.

The Victorian born official first joined the sport in 1969 in his home state

and was hooked thereafter – going to as many events in order to satisfy his passion for motorsport.

In 1991, he moved to the sunshine state where he continued to improve and grow his reputation as a highly respected official, for which he has continued until the current day.

Throughout the past 30 years, Mayberry has enjoyed quite an impressive career in the sport and has had many highlights.

Outside of being the Clerk of Course for the Queensland Raceway’s first

ever race meeting, he also held the role for many years at multiple Repco Supercars Championship Queensland rounds, as well as Queensland and New South Wales historic race meetings.

“It's a nice feeling to have just been nominated, let alone to win” The Queensland Service to Sport Award isn’t the first time Mayberry has been recognised for his efforts this year after he received a 2020 Motorsport Australia Service Star for Queensland in February.

Following his second award in one year, Mayberry was humbled to win the award.

“It is a nice feeling to have just been nominated, let alone to win.

It came as a complete surprise as I didn’t even know that I was nominated,” Mayberry said.

“I think an award outside of the motorsport circuit is a great achievement. Of course, there are so many people who are just as deserving of this award, but I’ll take it.

“What makes this award even more special is that I believe that I am one of the only individuals from motorsport to win this Service Award, which is great for growing the sport.

“When I first went to that Sandown meeting back in 1969, I never would have expected to still be involved half a century later and certainly not winning a trophy like this – I don’t do it for the rewards, I do it for the love of the sport.

“There have been lots of positives and negatives along the way and I have met many good people and honestly, it’s quite nice that my efforts don’t go unnoticed. I do live by the philosophy that our competitors are customers and we want to help them enjoy what they are doing.”

RACING TOGETHER EXPANDING DIVERSITY IN 2022 Racing Together took another major step forward in its mission to involve more Australian Indigenous teenagers in motorsport, with the program launching an allgirl karting team last month.

The new team, which has the backing of Gold Coast-based karting organisation Patrizicorse, will see four teenage girls of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background contest 10 events in Southeast Queensland next year.

Behind the wheel of the Patrizicorse 4SS-class Ricciardo kart will be Karlai Warner, while Ayesha Burke and Amber Rahurahu will serve as mechanics. The final member of the team, Tayla Warner, will be in charge of tyres, data and logistics.

Racing Together founder Garry Connelly was pleased with the girls’ attitude and passion for the project since getting involved.

"Despite being completely new to motor-racing at the beginning of the year, the girls have shown tremendous dedication and aptitude and have thoroughly earned this new opportunity,” Connelly said.

“Karlai has just turned 15. The karting will prepare her for car-racing and we intend for her to race a second Hyundai during next year.

profit program had a successful first year with the first intake of 10 Indigenous high-schoolers featuring in this year’s Motorsport Australia Queensland Circuit Championships.

Made up of six boys and four girls, the team spent the year building, maintaining, preparing and racing a Hyundai Excel in the Series X3 Queensland competition at Morgan Park Raceway, as well as in a support category for the Repco Supercars Championship's Merlin Darwin Triple Crown.

The program also gathered plenty of support from a variety of athletes, including seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Lewis Hamilton and Australian Tokyo Olympics beach volleyball Silver medallist Taliqua Clancy.

Indigenous female athletes, also holds a position on the Racing Together Board and was highly supportive of the new karting project.

“To create an opportunity especially for young Indigenous girls is a very exciting development in the Racing Together program,” Clancy said.

“We don’t believe anything like this has been done anywhere in the world and as an Indigenous sports person I’m delighted to give it my full support and will take a keen interest when the girls hit the track next season.”

“We are lucky to have the best officials in the world and weekends like this one give us another opportunity to celebrate and once again acknowledge their efforts.

“On behalf of everyone in our sport, I want to thank all of our Motorsport Australia officials for their outstanding support and passion in what has been another challenging year.

FRASER ELECTED FOR ANOTHER THREE YEARS Andrew Fraser will remain as President of Motorsport Australia for the next three years after being unanimously re-elected by the Motorsport Australia Board.

“It’s a sport that I and thousands of Australians love and participate in and the role of Motorsport Australia is vital to its health not just presently, but well into the future.

Having been the President since the start of the year, Fraser has had a busy 12 months guiding Motorsport Australia through the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I was first humbled by my colleagues’ support for me to finish the remainder of the previous President’s term when he made the decision to step down.

First appointed to the Board in 2019, the Queenslander was considered the

However because of his strong leadership, passion for the sport and vast experience during his short time in charge, Fraser was ultimately re-elected to have a full stint in the position.

“I’m deeply honoured by the opportunity and indeed the obligations to serve our sport,” Fraser said.

“And having led through a period of time dominated by the pandemic and the effects of that – financial and non-financial - on our sport, I was equally humbled to have that support continue for the next three years, which hopefully will see a rebuild of our sport.”

During his tenure, Fraser has been proactive in visiting grassroots clubs and motorsport organisations around the country, as well as attending national events such as the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships in Sydney and the Netier National Capital Rally earlier this year.

And although he has spent more time in the virtual boardroom trying to navigate through the pandemic as opposed to visiting events and meeting the members, he was hopeful that he can oversee growth in the sport during the next three years.

“My friends, who know how much I love the sport, have been joking around with me about how little time has been spent at race meetings as opposed to in Zoom meetings,” Fraser added.

“However in my position, it’s full of obligation and that obligation right now is to make sure Motorsport Australia remains healthy – with that said, I have still been able to go to some hill climbs and other grassroots events and it’s been quite reassuring to see first hand and talk with the people who make this sport happen.

“We have a tremendous base on which to build.

“Now that we’re recovering from this pandemic, I can begin to focus on my main goal, which is to create future opportunities in the sport for people wanting to get involved whether it’s behind the wheel, or in the many other ways you can get involved.

“One of the most important things for me are venues, and in particular grassroots venues. We want motorsport to happen in a safe and welcoming environment, so there is a need to have good infrastructure available for people to do the sport.

“Another big focus for us will be on sustainability and to make sure that our community and commercial expectations all align with the need for motorsport to become sustainable for the future.

“Finally, from the events I have managed to make it to, one thing is clear – the passion and dedication of our officials are what define our sport and I want to keep that front and centre of everyone's minds for the future.”

A lifelong motorsport fan whose family has been in the motor vehicle industry for generations, Fraser has significant

sports governance experience, including as a former Commissioner of the Australian Sports Commission.

He has served in executive and governance roles in rugby league in Australia and New Zealand. A former Deputy Premier and Treasurer of Queensland, he is also currently the Chair of Sunsuper and Orange Sky Australia, and the Deputy Chancellor of Griffith University.

Fraser’s new term will see him lead the board until the next election in 2024.

CARRERA CUP GAINS CHAMPIONSHIP STATUS Motorsport Australia has confirmed the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia will officially be elevated to Championship status in 2022.

Carrera Cup’s elevation sees it join only a small number of other categories that hold the official designation, with Supercars, GT and S5000 (Australian Drivers’ Championship) as the only other circuit racing categories to officially award a Championship.

As a Championship, the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup will also receive a boost in Superlicence points awarded from 2022 and beyond.

Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said the elevation to Championship highlighted the category’s impressive standing in Australian motorsport.

“The Motorsport Australia Board has gladly approved this promotion and it is one that we are delighted to confirm, highlighting the strength of the Carrera Cup Australia in recent years,” Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said.

“The category continues to provide exciting racing on the national stage. It also provides an important pathway in the motorsport pyramid, not just for those wishing to compete here in Australia, but also for those who wish to compete overseas and showcase their talents.

“Carrera Cup Australia has been such a strong pillar of motorsport in Australia in recent times and we look forward to the competitors and teams racing for a prestigious Championship title in 2022 and beyond.”

Porsche Cars Australia Head of Motorsport Troy Bundy said the 2022 Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia promised to be one the most exciting in recent years.

“This announcement is great news for both our teams and drivers as well as those Michelin Junior Development drivers progressing onto Supercars like Matthew Payne,” Bundy said.

“Receiving Championship status also means our Mobil Pro drivers will receive the same recognition and Superlicence points as the likes of Super 2, S5000 and GT World Challenge Australia Championships.”

PFEIFFER SECURES NDCC HILL CLIMB TITLE David Pfeiffer has taken out the 13th Nissan Datsun Car Club SA (NDCC Hill Climb Challenge at Collingrove Hill Climb in thrilling fashion, winning the event by just two and half seconds.

Behind the wheel of his Talbot RF special, Pfeiffer had nine attempts at the popular course with his fifth run of 31.38 seconds proving unbeatable for the rest of the day.

With members from a collection of car clubs including the NDCC, Modified Mini, Hot Bricks SA, Walkerville All Cars Club, M Car Club and the Sporting Car Club of SA all braving the poor weather conditions, it made Pfeiffer’s win over the 45 other competitors even more impressive.

Before he posted his eventwinning time, the first few runs proved to be very tricky for him and the rest of the field as thunder, lightning and torrential rain played a factor on the track’s surface.

place, although his Nissan R32 GTR was no match for Pfeiffer, his best time coming in at 33.79 seconds.

Darren Hart finished in third overall with a time of 34.39 seconds, however he didn’t go home empty handed as he claimed the Over 2L class, storming up the hill in his Toyota Corolla.

Geoff Vardon and Anthony Norris rounded out the top five, with Vardon finishing one second ahead of Norris after his 34.50 second time on run five was too good for Norris, who posted his best time of 35.59 two runs later.

With five different classes run on the day, Road Registered 2L and Under was taken out by Steve Turner in his Morris Mini, edging out Andrew Harris

in his double entered Ford Fiesta XR4 by two tenths of a second.

Cal Ward took out third place in his Renault Clio making its debut at Collingrove having just made its debut at Legends of the Lake the week before.

The Road Registered Over 2L class was taken out by Phil Wilson from Mount Gambier in his Toyota Soarer with a time of 36.84 seconds.

NDCC President Daniel Romeo registered a time of 33.44 in his Nissan Skyline, however upon review was revealed there was a glitch in the system which took second place out of his hands, in what was a very tough day for driving.

“There was minor cloud which gave way to the sun and made it a bit muggy,” Romeo said.

“Then just after lunch, there was thunder, lightning and five minutes of horizontal rain, which made the track very wet for the second run.

“After the second run though it started to dry and the following run was a lot less wet, it proved to be very grippy as the sun stayed away with the light cloud and residual heat from the morning.

“Unfortunately for me there was a timing hiccup, as much as I would’ve loved to finish second, that wasn’t the case.”

SUPER NOVEMBER WEEKEND FOR PIARC 26 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

The Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (PIARC) held a successful supersprint and Victorian Superkarts round last month, with more than 80 drivers battling it out on the famous Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

With the event’s main feature being the supersprint, it was Jamie Lovett in a Porsche 997.2 GT3 who took out a fine

victory in the competitive event, posting four times under 1:40.0, including his event-winning time of 1:37.2 in the opening session.

It was a productive day for Gregory Blackwood, who finished second behind Lovett and topped his class with a time of 1:45.2 during the event’s sixth session.

The Lexus ISF pilot completed his quickest time on lap two, finishing ahead of Benjamin Styles in third place.

The battle for third proved quite dramatic as Styles was sitting behind Andrew Campbell for the whole session before pipping the Porsche Cayman GTS driver on his final lap of the day.

As Styles posted his best time of 1.48.55, Campbell did all that he could to better him on his own final lap, but ultimately fell short of the Lotus Exige driver by five hundredths of a second and as a result, missed out on a podium.

In what proved to be a diverse event, the top three drivers finished all came from different classes with Lovett taking out the Racing Closed over 2500cc, Blackwood in the Standard over 3000cc and Styles winning the Standard 1601 to 2000.

Outside of the supersprint, around 45 drivers competed in the Victoria Superkarts round, with a tight battle taking place in the 250 International group,

with Tim Clarke narrowly edging out Gary Pegoraro for round honours.

It was a dominant display for Rod Clarke in the Max Heavy group with his clean sweep of victories seeing him 40 points clear of Oliver Bonaccorso in second place.

Two wins to Bradley Marsh-Stepne helped him finish top of the Gearbox group with 84 points, while three wins to Sanuja Perera was enough for him to win the Max Light group ahead of Hayden Veld and Lucas Quattrocchi who were tied for second place.

In the Stock Honda Class, it was an intriguing battle between Thomas Roe and Jeff Duckworth, however it was the latter who proved too strong for Roe and the rest of the class, winning all four races.

80 NEW DRIVERS COME AND TRY AT THE ISLAND The Marque Sport Car Association (MSCA) held an Come and Try Day event at Phillip Island last month, which provided 80 participants vital driving education through a sprint day with experienced instructors and coaches as well as important time in the classroom.

Having run this event for more than five years, the MSCA has guided around 500 participants through their come and try program, 80 of which hit the famous Victorian circuit last month for the very first time.

With assistance from its recent Victorian Government grant, the club focussed on attracting women entrants to the event, which resulted in 25 females attending – a third of the field.

60 volunteers and 23 instructors were present to help all the new drivers participate in the event, making them more comfortable when behind the wheel at a motorsport event.

One of the participants, 26-yearold Adelaid Hawkins, enjoyed her time at the event and was grateful for the opportunity to take part.

“I was a bit nervous heading into the event as I had never driven on a racetrack before, but all those nerves went away early once I saw how organised the event was,” Hawkins said.

“All the instructors were extremely helpful and they were very knowledgeable too which made it much easier for me when was driving.

“It was great to see so many other woman there and the passion of all the participants made it a good day. It was a very fun day and a big thank you to the MSCA and the volunteers for putting it on.”

Next year’s event will take place on 3 December, with entries expected to open early 2022.

BRING ON 2022 FOR NEW WA AND VIC CHAIRS In 2022, both the Western Australian and Victorian State Councils will see new Chairs take over for the next three years.

Wendy Walker (Western Australia) and Petrina Astbury (Victoria) were appointed as Chairs for their respective states and both have extensive experience in the sport.

Speed Read caught up with both women to get a bit of an insight into who they are ahead of their official takeover on 1 January, 2022.

Speed Read: How does it feel to be voted in?

Petrina Astbury: It’s a privilege to be given this opportunity to give back to motorsport. I’m looking forward to working closely with Motorsport Australia, the Panel Chairs, the Executive and the members they represent and to contribute to the future of our sport.

SR: Obviously it’s a big role to take on, what inspired you to put your hand up?

PA: I am passionate about our sport, and in particular the growth of grassroots motorsport. I’m looking forward to contributing to a contemporary and relevant future of our sport.

SR: You are one of two women to be voted as Chairs for the next three years, does that feel special?

PA: In a sport that has been traditionally male dominated, it is encouraging to experience a rebalancing of equality, not only in gender, but diversity in general. It is a privilege to be part of this change.

SR: What are you hoping to achieve during your tenure?

PA: I think there is a real opportunity for re-engagement between the members and Motorsport Australia. I believe there is some work to be done around re-defining and strengthening that relationship, and I’m looking forward to working closely with Motorsport Australia, and through the Panel Chairs, effectively representing our members.

women. My background is in grassroots motorsport having competed, officiated and organised club events for over 20 years, and I am certainly no expert in other motorsport disciplines.

I’m keen to learn and increase my knowledge. Together with the Panel Chairs and Executives, I hope to achieve growth in our sport through looking at contemporary ways to support this.

SR: Are you confident you can achieve your goals?

PA: Like anyone who steps into a new role, there will be challenges. I work at a senior level in a mental health organisation and my background is in workplace conflict and understanding challenging people dynamics in workplaces. Hopefully this, and my operational understanding of grassroots motorsport will help during my time as Chair. With the support of the Panel Chairs and Executives, our elected Board member, Norman Gowers and Motorsport Australia I’m hopeful we can achieve our collective goals.

SR: Finally, anyone to thank?

PA: I have been incredibly supported by the Marque Sports Car Association and its delegates. I have great support from the husband who thankfully shares my passion for motorsport. It’s great to share this ride with him.

SR: Before you officially take over, what are you hoping to achieve during your tenure?

Wendy Walker: I am. It’s something I am really looking forward to. Every now and then I have a little self-doubt as to whether I will be able to do it or not, but overall, I am excited.

WW: That’s a hard question to answer right now because there is so much I need to learn about the other disciplines before I can determine what needs to be done, so in that sense, it’s difficult to say, but I am certainly going in with an open mind.

SR: How was the whole process for you?

WW: To be honest, I was the only nomination, so I guess it was a sure thing.

Lyndon Sperring and Nick Rahimtulla approached me early last year about the possibility of coming on board to eventually slot into the Chairperson role.

So, for me, I accepted it thinking it would be a sink or swim scenario and knowing full well that I would have the help in doing so.

All I have seen this year is the executive fixing issues. I haven’t seen anything where they focused on the future, but I suppose from afar, I would say grassroots and officials will be my biggest priorities.

I really would like to see grassroots in our sport promoted. To have been a good line of succession, you need to have new people coming in – through all disciplines.

SR: So, in that sense, you must be confident?

SR: You enter the role as one of the first women to take out a state chair position. Is that a nice feeling?

WW: My major background is rally. I was chairperson of the Rally panel many years back and I am involved in other panels, so I know how to hold an overseeing role.

WW: I think it’s a nice little feather in my cap to have. Motorsport is mainly a male dominated and I am not saying that with any disrespect to men; Speed is naturally just attributed to men

The biggest challenge for me though will be overseeing more than just my own discipline and understanding all the other disciplines that make up the sport – they are all fairly new to me.

With that said, we are seeing more women getting involved in sports of all kind, so I am looking forward to doing my part and hopefully I can make some differences.

It will be a slow process, but I will have plenty of help and I am looking forward to the challenge.

I've been involved in sport for a long time and I believe I have something to give back to motorsport. As a competitor and official and administrator, I feel I can bring multiple views to the table and I would like to think I could be useful and an integral part of the link.

STATE AWARD DATES LOCKED IN The dates for the 2021 Motorsport Australia State Award ceremonies have been announced.

Every year, the Motorsport Australia State Awards celebrate the achievements of both the championship winning drivers/ co-drivers and the individuals who are the driving force of grassroots motorsport, with awards like Service Star and the State Official of the Year recognising their efforts.

In 2022, all state awards will be held virtually in the opening months of the year.

The decision to make the ceremonies a virtual affair comes after another difficult year for the country and due to the uncertainty of ongoing restrictions, which may impact gathering limits or force last minute cancellations.

Each state’s virtual awards ceremony will be available to watch via motorsport.org.au, so people can tune into the awards from the comfort of their own home from anywhere

in the world and pay tribute to those who go above and beyond.

As the ceremonies are now online, they will be free to attend, with all award winners to have the opportunity to speak and recognise those close to them who played a role in their journey.

Taking place over three weeks in February, the ceremonies will be held each Wednesday and Thursday, with Tasmania the first on Wednesday 9 February and New South Wales the last on Thursday 24 February.

South Australia/Northern Territory’s ceremony date is still to be confirmed, with updates to be provided on the Motorsport Australia website once this event is finalised.

MAY PRAISES MOTORSPORT COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO 2020 PANDEMIC “The things that Eight months after being named as the Motorsport Australia Official of the Year and the recipient of a Presidential Citation, Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix Chief Medical Officer Dr Brent May was officially presented with his awards last month.

With the motorsport world grinding to a halt in 2020, May and his team were working around the clock to ensure the Australian motorsport could survive and get into a position to get up and running again.

After his tremendous efforts during the Australian Grand Prix and then being an important cog in the development of Motorsport Australia’s ever-important Return to Race document, May was a highly deserving winner of both awards.

Although the motorsport community faced similar issues in 2021, with the many events and series falling victim to various lockdown restrictions and border closures, May was full of praise for the motorsport community for doing what was necessary to get back on track throughout both challenging years.

“From a motorsport point of view, watching Motorsport Australia’s response to try and make sure

that the sport can continue in the pandemic era has been really impressive to see,” May said.

“From all aspects, the officials, the operations teams, the organisers, the drivers in the teams themselves, I think to watch them follow the rules to get their sports up and running has been really pleasing to see.

“I think the vaccination rates and people doing the right thing at events, the social distancing and mask wearing and all the things that people did to get motorsport happening in both years was extraordinarily pleasing to see.

“In the early days, we had to be very fast in our response and have a plan - especially to the health and safety guidelines and social distancing, as well as putting together the document to allow sport to continue.

“I think as we continue to make our way out of the pandemic, the Return To Race document will thankfully become less and less important. But in those early days especially, it was important to put a lot of effort in quickly to get something that would help the sport in the long run.”

PIASTRI CLAIMS FORMULA 2 TITLE Oscar Piastri has won the FIA Formula 2 Championship after a brilliant weekend behind the wheel in Abu Dhabi.

The Victorian enjoyed an irresistible run of form in the second half of the year and secured his third title in as many years with two races still remaining in the season.

Piastri then capped off the season with victory in the feature race, which took his outright lead over Shwartzman to 60.5 points.

Piastri enters rare company with just two other individuals having been F2 and F3 champions in their rookie years – Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and incoming Mercedes driver, George Russell.

The Silverstone round also saw Piastri claim his first official pole position since 2019, the year he won the Formula Renault Eurocup, which was the first of his three international titles.

Since replacing fellow Alpine Academy driver Guanyu Zhou at the top of the F2 standings, Piastri continued to extend his lead at every round, with the 20-year-old adding a further four pole positions and five race wins to his season tally.

Having entered the final round at Yas Marina Circuit with a 51.5 point lead over Russian Robert Shwartzman, Piastri’s fifth consecutive pole and third place in the first sprint race of the weekend saw him create a lead big enough to make it mathematically impossible for his Prema Racing teammate to catch him.

Unlike previous years, where the championship title fights went down to the final race of the year, Piastri has enjoyed a comfortable run to this title, having led the standings since the fourth round of the season at Silverstone Raceway in July.

While Piastri will not be racing in F1 next year, he has secured a seat as Alpine’s Reserve Driver and will be hoping to make his debut in 2023.

“The final race of F2 for the year is done and we managed to win the race, which is fantastic,” Piastri said said after the round's feature race.

“It is a great way to end the year and a great way to end my junior career.

“Thank you everyone for your support and all of your messages after winning the Championship. I have still got thousands unopened.

“It was very good to end the season on a high, I’ll hopefully see you at some point on a grid in the future.”

Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca congratulated Piastri on winning the Formula 2 Championship.

“To win last year’s Formula 3 Championship was an impressive feat in itself, but to go back-to-back as a rookie and win the second highest level of open wheel racing is an outstanding achievement,” Arocca said.

“No Australian has managed to win the second tier of Formula 1 racing in recent times, so I imagine Oscar would be pleased with his efforts and every Australian should be very proud of this young man – he is doing an outstanding job in representing this country at the highest levels of motorsport.

“Whilst Oscar has not secured a permanent seat in Formula 1 next year, with Alpine appointing him as its reserve driver, I am sure it won’t be too long before we see two Australians in the world’s best racing category.

The calendar for the 2022 BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) has been confirmed with a blockbuster six rounds to make up the season.

For the first time recent years, all mainland states will hold a round of the AORC during the season with New South Wales now added to the calendar.

Known as the Pooncarie Desert Dash, the south west NSW state Pooncarie joins the AORC for the first time in its history and will mark its debut as the second round of the 2022 season.

However, before the AORC heads to its newest addition on the calendar, the Cobb & Co St George 399 will once again have the honour of hosting the championship’s season opener in March – a role it has held for the past five years.

Following the opening two rounds of the season, crews will then get the opportunity to compete in the biggest event in Australian off road with the Tatts Finke Desert Race to be held in its traditional timeslot of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June.

A brief six-week mid-season break awaits competitors before they head to South Australia at the end of July for the Can-Am Loveday 400 at Loveday 4x4 Adventure Park.

Sporting a brand-new time slot will be the Hindmarsh Shire Rainbow Desert Enduro with the fourth round of the season to be held at the start of September.

Motorsport Australia has announced a number of tweaks to the 2022 RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship calendar.

The changes will see the Netier National Capital Rally moved back one week, the Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland moved forward one week and the Adelaide Hills Rally held one weekend later.

The location of the final round remains to be confirmed, however the rally will take place in New South Wales, with an international flavour expected.

These small modifications have been made in conjunction with event organisers to maximise attendance and secure key venues as part of each rally.

large pool of competitors, as well as a number of new machines expected to debut at the top end of the field.

Meanwhile, a huge pre-season test and 2022 launch event will be held in Canberra on 8 March. More details on this event will be released in the lead up to the 2022 season.

MAGUIRE ENJOYS EMPHATIC ADELAIDE WIN Eddie Maguire has capped off his highly successful 2021 with a brilliant victory in the Shannons Adelaide Rally and a hefty $20,000 bonus as a result.

Behind the wheel of a 2016 Dodge Viper, the Tasmanian entered the competitive component of the event as the clear favourite and he co-driver Zak Brakey certainly delivered as they won more than three-quarters of the stages.

Despite being his first time at the event, Maguire looked extremely comfortable on the roads and managed to win or finish second in all but one of the event’s 32 completed stages.

His biggest challenger out of the 90-plus crews came through Porsche GT2 RS driver Jeff Morton and Daymon Nicoli, who went fastest on eight occasions – two of which were shared with Maguire.

In the crews’ battle for top spot, it was the Dodge Viper of Maguire who got off to the better start and took an early lead, however a five second stage win on SS4 saw Morton take the lead from his rival.

Maguire then won 12 of the next 13 stages to finish the first half of the event with a solid 17-second buffer over Morton, while the next best placed crew of Angus Kennard

and Ian Wheeler were a further two and half minutes behind.

Eight out of nine stage wins to the 2021 Targa Tasmania winner on day three saw him extend the gap out to 31 seconds before a mixed final day of results saw him finish the weekend with a 29.9 second victory over Morton, while Kennard secured third a further six minutes behind.

outright and another $10,000 bonus for being the fastest interstate driver.

And although he had a strong weekend, it was far from smooth sailing for the 34-year-old, who had multiple issues throughout the weekend. ”We’re really happy with the win, especially with the car having been dialled in really well. It’s a lot easier to come out of the box fast when you have a really good setup,” Maguire said.

“With that said, it wasn’t all that easy as we had a few big issues along the way.

“The first major problem happened on Saturday when we ran the whole day

with the diff held with ratchet straps after they tore off, while our intercom failed on Sunday, which led to a stage where we overshot and lost 10 seconds.

“Our soft tyres also struggled a little bit and turned into marshmallows, but apart from that, we didn’t have any major issues and it was a fantastic event to be a part of.

“The concept of the event is so good and the atmosphere was like nothing we have ever seen before. To finish in the heart of the city and with huge amounts of crowds – it felt like a WRC (World Rally Championship) event.

“All in all, we’re really happy and it’s been an awesome year, especially to have won this event with such a great prize and Targa Tasmania.

We're looking forward to next year.”

Experienced RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) competitor Jack Monkhouse enjoyed a memorable tarmac rally debut with victory in the Classic Competition.

Driving a 1973 Datsun 180B SSS alongside Chloe Bojko, the duo dominated the competition having led the field at the end of every day and eventually taking out a four-minute win over Andrew Booker and Neil Branum.

It was a far closer battle in the Modern Challenge class with Geoffrey Olholm and Matthew Sanders steering their 2019 Toyota Supra GT to a 14-second win over the Porsche 997.2 GT3 of Ben Auld and Lucy Barker.

In the last competition of the event, William Coulter and Andrew Colliver steered their 1986 Toyota Sprinter AE86 to a five-minute victory in the Classic Challenge.

OPENING ROUNDS OF SHANNONS 2022 CALENDAR CONFIRMED A number of Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships events are now locked in for 2022, with a mix of Australia’s best categories to join each event.

“Of course, the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships will remain home to a number of other popular categories, including the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, which has been an integral part of our events. We look forward to again welcoming the Precision National Sports Sedan Series, Radical Australia, GC Marine Australian Prototype Series and the MRF Tyres Australian Production Car Series to name just a few of our regular categories.

The full Shannons calendar will be released in coming weeks, with several more events still to be added to next year’s bill.

Exact category line ups are expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks as each category finalises their respective schedule.

Sandown again features in September, with a large crowd expected to attend the Melbourne circuit.

Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith said the 2022 calendar was an exciting prospect after two years of disruptions.

SCHENKEN TO STAND DOWN FROM SUPERCARS Tim Schenken OAM has announced his retirement from the Repco Supercars Championship Race Director role.

The vastly experienced Schenken took on the top job in Race Control for the Australia Touring Car Championship in 1987.

Schenken said he had been in discussions with Motorsport Australia in recent weeks about his future plans.

“Having thought about this decision and having discussed it with those near and dear to me, I came to the conclusion that it was time to call it a day,” Schenken said.

“It’s been a privilege to have been involved in the Supercars Championship for so long and to have worked with so many wonderful people during this time.

“There are so many great memories I will cherish and I expect to miss not being in Race Control at each event.”

Schenken will continue to work with Motorsport Australia and the FIA, providing his expertise across a range of areas, including as FIA Platinum track inspector and the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix Chairman of the Organising Committee and Clerk of the Course. This work will continue

to improve motorsport at all levels, particularly in the area of track safety.

Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser said Schenken's longevity in the position highlighted the regard in which he was held.

“For Tim to be the Race Director for so many years and barely miss a race, it certainly shows how much the Championship means to him and how highly respected he is amongst the Supercars family," Fraser said.

"Tim has witnessed so many iconic moments in motorsport during his time as Race Director and he deserves all the plaudits for his achievements. We are

certainly pleased he will continue to be involved in the sport through his roles with Motorsport Australia and the FIA.” Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca congratulated Schenken on an outstanding career as Race Director.

“Tim has been such a major part of the Supercars Championship and is highly respected. He can certainly take credit for the professionalism in the way these events are now officiated and run,” Arocca said.

“We saw how Tim was able to mentor the likes of Michael Masi, who was able to move seamlessly into the Formula 1 Race Director role which is evidence of the professionalism of the Supercars Race Control set up.

“Tim deserves a sincere thank you from everyone in the motorsport community and we look forward to continuing to work with him at Motorsport Australia in the years to come.”

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer echoed Arocca’s sentiments.

“It has been a pleasure seeing Tim lead the team in Race Control and on behalf of everyone at the Repco Supercars Championship, we congratulate and sincerely thank Tim for his contributions to our category over so many years,” Seamer said.

“There are only a handful of people who would have been to as many races as Tim and his knowledge and experience has been invaluable to so many throughout his journey in Supercars.

“Tim has left such a legacy on Supercars officialdom and his friendship and presence in Race Control will be missed.”

James Taylor, who had filled in for Schenken at times during the COVID interruptions, will step into the Race Director role on a permanent basis in 2022.

In Schenken’s last outing as the Supercars Race Director during the Repco Bathurst 1000, The Bathurst Regional Council renaming the race control tower in his honour.

Now known as the Tim Schenken OAM Race Control Centre, the iconic tower will be adorned with a plaque bearing his name.

“I have to say, I feel quite emotional about it. I had no idea,” Schenken said.

“It’s fantastic, it’s unbelievable. That was a surprise and it’s a special honour. I’m humbled by it.”

HEAVY RAIN FORCES CANCELLATION OF FINAL ARC EVENT Motorsport Australia was disappointed to confirm the Kosciuszko Automotive Monaro Sprint Rally was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Forecast rain and recent weather meant Forestry NSW was forced to withdraw the event’s permit due to potential damage to roads and the significant costs of any repairs, as well as the safety of all competitors and teams.

Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith said the cancellation meant no RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship would be awarded in 2021.

“This is a devastating outcome for everyone involved after a difficult year,” Smith said.

Given this news, Motorsport Australia will instead award a series of Cups to competitors based on results for the two ARC events that were able to be held this year.

“With only two official rounds able to be held in 2021, it’s not feasible to award a Championship,” Smith added.

“We’ll still recognise the outstanding efforts of our competitors across the various classes this year with a series of Cups.”

The 2022 RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship calendar features seven rounds, with the next event to take place in Canberra, with the Netier National Capital Rally on 1-3 April.

HELMET CAMERA UPDATES The FIA and Motorsport Australia wish to remind competitors about appropriate use of helmet cameras.

With helmet accessories recently gaining plenty of popularity as individuals look for another avenue to capture on board footage, there has been lots of research carried out into the safety of the cameras and only a select number of cameras are able to be used without cancelling out the protection helmets offer.

The FIA Formula 1 and Formula E championships are among those utilising the helmet accessory, assisting teams and the host broadcaster with footage, however all cameras have been approved by the FIA. Each helmet seen during those international championships has been expertly developed and rigorously tested to make sure the cameras do not compromise safety.

Competitors wanting to incorporate a camera onto the helmet must note that only helmets with cameras and accessories that are homologated to FIA Standards 8858, 8859, and 8860 will be accepted. Any modification or addition of non-approved accessories will cause the helmet homologation to be cancelled.

FIA FOCUSES ON HARNESS SAFETY The FIA has released a recent safety bulletin, emphasising the importance of safety harnesses when competing.

The bulletin focuses on a number of steps competitors should take in order to equip their harness correctly so that it provides optimal protection in the event of an accident.

Whilst the release is focused on International competition, competitors must note that the information is relevant to all levels of competition under Motorsport Australia, from grassroots all the way to national competition.

With officials able to deny participation if the harnesses are not installed correctly, the steps provided are the easiest way to avoid issue before competing.

1 - CORRECT BUCKLE POSITION IN RELATION WITH THE PELVIC/ ILIAC CREST AREA The lap straps must fit tightly in the bend between the pelvic crest and the upper thigh as illustrated in Figure 1a. Under no conditions must they be worn over the region of the abdomen (Figure 1b). The lap and crotch straps must hold the pelvic region over the greatest possible surface.

2 - SAFETY HARNESS ANCHORAGE POINTS It is important that safety harness straps are anchored in accordance with the FIA International Sporting Code under Appendix J or/and to the championship technical regulation.

It is prohibited for the safety harnesses to be anchored to the seats or their

supports. This is to ensure in case the seat anchorage points fail during an accident the driver will not be ejected together with the seat and harness. Competitors are reminded that Appendix J or/and championship technical regulation have regulations in place to allow to install the harness with the recommended straps angles mentioned in point 5.

3 - SAFETY HARNESS STRAPS ROUTING The shoulder, lap and crotch straps must pass through the dedicated seat slots, in order to ensure that they wrap and hold the shoulder and pelvic region over the greatest possible surface. All the strap must pass freely through the seat slots in order to avoid the webbing to stress the seat slot edge.

4 - FREE VOLUME AROUND THE SAFETY HARNESS BUCKLE

To avoid an involuntary opening of the safety harness while driving competitors must check the distance of the hands to the safety harness buckle during the steering. During a movement of the steering wheel by 180 degrees to the left and right, the hands should always be at a safe distance from the lever of the buckle.

5 - SAFETY HARNESS INSTALLATION The safety harness must be installed in accordance with the FIA International Sporting Code under Appendix J or/ and to the championship technical

Studies performed by the FIA Safety Department have demonstrated that safety harness tension is important to reduce the risk of serious injuries and for the correct functioning of the Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) device. It is therefore important that competitors always keep their safety harness properly tightened as described in Figure 6.

MOSTERT AND HOLDSWORTH SECURE EPIC 1000 Chaz Mostert is the King of the Mountain once again after he and Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Lee Holdsworth became the first polesitters in more than a decade to win the 2021 Repco Bathurst 1000.

Despite sustaining a puncture in the first half of the race, both Mostert and Holdsworth produced brilliant stints behind the wheel of their Holden Commodore to help the team secure its first Bathurst win in 10 years.

In a race which had six safety car periods, there was plenty of drama throughout the 161-laps as Mostert crossed the finish line almost four seconds ahead of the Tickford Racing Ford Mustang of Cameron Waters and James Moffat, while Erebus Motorsport's Brodie Kostecki and David Russell rounded out the mixed podium.

Mostert and Holdsworth were on a different level all weekend,

consistently towards the top of the timesheets throughout every session, including the Top 10 Shootout where Mostert posted a record lap time to secure pole position.

When it came to the race, there were a few hairy moments, the most notable being the left rear tyre puncture, however a combination of good strategy, a fast car, strong driving stints and some good luck all contributed to the win.

“It was a pretty tough race, when we did that [puncture] I knew it was going to be a tough slog, but credit to the guys, this car has been speedy all weekend,” Mostert said.

“We started on pole and we won the race and every time you start on pole you never think you're going win it, credit to this car and credit to the team.

“To all the fans; it's so good to have punters back at the track, I’m out of breath."

As for Holdsworth, it was the veteran’s first Bathurst 1000 win after 18 attempts.

“I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what to say. This is unbelievable. This team is amazing,” Holdsworth added.

“I wanted to jump on the bonnet and go with him, it was amazing.”

While Waters and Kostecki were the full-timers making up the minor podium positions, it was the Triple Eight Race Engineering #97 Holden

Commodore of Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander who were the biggest challengers throughout the day.

The duo looked to have been in the box seat for the win at multiple times and was set up for a huge charge for it when the final safety car period concluded.

Unfortunately their charge was short-lived as van Gisbergen suffered a puncture of his own with eight laps to go, only this time they didn’t have enough time to repair the error and reached the chequered flag as the third-last finishing car.

The heartbreak didn’t last too long though as van Gisbergen was officially awarded the 2021 Championship title upon arriving in the garage – the New Zealander putting in a stellar year to claim his second title.

In the adjoining Triple Eight garage, seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup capped off his full-time Supercars career with an impressive fourth alongside Craig Lowndes after failing to make Saturday's shootout.

LUCKY 13 FOR SUPERCARS IN 2022 The Repco Supercars Championship has revealed its 2022 draft calendar with 13 rounds to make up the season.

Scheduled to run between March and November, the new calendar will see the championship head to six different states throughout the year, as well as the return of a visit to New Zealand.

With the Newcastle season opener and the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix rounds having already been confirmed earlier this year, the remaining calendar will see a handful of circuits return to the fold for the first time since 2019.

Those tracks scheduled to host Supercars for the first time since 2019 include Symmons Plains (Tasmania), Wanneroo Raceway (Perth), the Gold Coast Street Circuit (Queensland) and Victorian track’s Winton Motor Raceway and Sandown International Raceway.

Following Sandown’s event, Supercars will then venture across the Tasman Sea to Pukekohe Park Raceway for the ITM Auckland SuperSprint in September.

While there are plenty of familiar circuits back on the schedule, Supercars will head to a number of circuits that have hosted rounds over the past two years, albeit for single appearances Those events include Hidden Valley Raceway (Darwin), Reid Park in

Townsville (Queensland) and at Sydney Motorsport Park Street, which will host the season finale in November.

The Repco Bathurst 1000 returns to its traditional timeslot at the start of October in 2022 and as a result, the 161-lap great race will no longer act as the season finale with two more rounds to see off the year.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer was happy with the 2022 calendar and was pleased to see the return of many fan favourites.

“The 2022 season will follow an unprecedented two years for Supercars in which the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in two revised calendars – a huge achievement given the nature of the sport,” Seamer said.

“It has been fantastic to welcome fans back to events this year, and we will continue to ensure this is done safely and in line with national guidelines as we welcome more fans back in 2022.

“We are very pleased with the interest in Supercars growing continuously through large audiences watching our world-class broadcast and a significant growth of our presence online across the globe.”

The Supercars calendar is still yet to be fully completed with the round scheduled to take place at the end of July yet to have a location confirmed.

The 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will begin with the Repco Newcastle 500 at the Newcastle Street Circuit in New South Wales on 4-6 March.

GEN3 CARS ARRIVE AT THE MOUNTAIN Repco Supercars Championship fans got a special insight into the future of the category with the brand new Gen3 prototypes officially unveiled during the Repco Bathurst 1000 morning.

While the event was in full swing, it was a fitting opportunity for the championship to showcase the new cars as the Ford Mustang GT and General Motors Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 were revealed at the iconic circuit.

“We truly believe these cars will create close racing with a more level playing field” - Sean Seamer, Supercars CEO

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer was thrilled with the prototypes ahead of their 2023 debut.

“These are incredible looking race cars and it’s an historic occasion to be here today, unveiling them at the foot of Mount Panorama, our spiritual home of racing,” Seamer said.

"The motorsport and motoring worlds have been watching this announcement very closely as it is a massive opportunity for our sport to step up on several levels and attract a wider audience.

Brought in to have a closer visual connection between race and road cars – the new Gen3 cars will be sporting the same dimensions as road cars on key components such as doors, roof, bonnet, and windows.

Attendees at the launch were treated to a show as the covers were taken off and the engines were turned on - creating a roaring atmosphere inside the garages.

“Both the Mustang and Camaro give a nod to the Supercar of the past, with as much attention given to the design and appearance of the cars as the new technologies.

that will be cost-effective for our major stakeholders and teams but retain the very core of our success - terrific and exciting Supercar racing, which is what our fans have been asking us for."

Fans also got to see the cars live on track during the 2021 season finale with 2021 champion Shane van Gisbergen and Shell V Power Racing’s Anton De Pasquale cutting laps of the Mount Panorama in the new cars.

As expected, van Gisbergen was behind the wheel of the brand new Camaro, while De Pasquale will run in the revamped Ford Mustang.

VAN GISBERGEN WINS 2021 TITLE After four entertaining rounds at Sydney Motorsport Park, the biggest breakthrough to come out of the month-long schedule was Shane van Gisbergen winning his second Repco Supercars Championship title. van Gisbergen had enjoyed a dominant season all year and very rarely scored points, steering his Triple

Eight Racing Holden Commodore to 14 wins on the way to his title won ahead of the Repco Bathurst 1000.

During the four Supercars rounds at Sydney Motorsport Park, van Gisbergen enjoyed visits to the podium on all but two occasions as he battled hard with Dick Johnson Racing’s Anton De Pasqaule and teammate Jamie Whincup.

Very little separated the duo and while De Pasquale had more success throughout the month, van Gisbergen was more consistent and crucially won the race the De Pasquale was disqualified from.

As a result of his consistency, he was not only successful in the obtaining the Supercars title, but also winning the Beaurepaires Sydney Cup – the special competition created for the four rounds at Eastern Creek.

Although late drama in the Repco Bathurst 1000 saw van Gisbergen endure a tough end to the season - it was still an incredible year from the Kiwi, who added plenty of silverware to his trophy cabinet.

In winning his second title, van Gisbergen becomes just the third driver from across the Tasman to win multiple titles, with the

32-year-old joining illustrious company in Scott McLaughlin (three) and Jim Richards (four).

Unfortunately, the last race for the Beaurepaires Sydney Cup was cancelled due to heavy rainfall, preventing Whincup from having one last crack at winning an eighth title and causing a bit of anti-climax to the title battle.

Despite the cancellation, van Gisbergen was thrilled to come away with his second title and join the special group of New Zealand drivers.

“It's a pretty cool feeling. It's still pretty fresh, but it's been an awesome year,” van Gisbergen said on becoming the 2021 champion-elect.

“We’ve had some challenges, some ups and downs, but we’ve come here to Sydney with a plan with and we’ve pretty much executed that plan at every race.

“We’ve been super consistent and did what we needed to do, and overall, it’s been an awesome year. I obviously had some challenges earlier in the year breaking myself, but the car has been fantastic, the team has been fantastic, and I’m super stoked with everything.

“The car's been fantastic and the team's been fantastic.

I'm just super stoked.

“It's cool to add my name to that list [of Kiwi multiple winners], but just to win it again, it's a cool thing.

“Jimmy's obviously a hero to most Kiwi drivers, and then obviously Scotty, getting to race him and being a mate, winning the last few.

“I remember, it seems a while ago now, 2016, it feels just like the first one.”
