EVENT RECAP

CHEQUERED FLAG FALLS AT

Australia’s hopes of seeing homegrown talent stand on the podium at the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix will have to wait another year, as Lando Norris led Max Verstappen and George Russell across the line in a chaotic start to the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Championship season.

Norris delivered an almost perfect race to secure the third win of his career in wet and wild conditions, having led for most of the race and holding off challenges from McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and Verstappen.

In the end, Verstappen could do nothing to get past Norris and was forced to settle for second, as Norris became the sixth different Australian Grand Prix winner in six years.

As for Piastri, all the hard work done in qualifying - along with an impressive

middle stint that saw him and Norris build a 16-second gap over the rest of the field - was undone by an unlucky moment on lap 44 when he spun off at the penultimate corner and was left stranded as cars streamed past.

The Melbournian eventually got back on track and into the pits for a quick tyre change, but any hopes of a podium were dashed as he rejoined near the back of the field with a mountain to climb.

Not to be deterred, Piastri salvaged some points with a lightningquick final stint, capping it off with a last-lap overtake on Lewis Hamilton to secure P9.

Piastri was one of just 14 drivers to finish the race, as six failed to reach the chequered flag—including fellow Australian Jack Doohan.

Like Piastri, Doohan had an impressive qualifying session on Saturday, only to find himself walking back to the pits before the race had truly begun—the Queenslander crashing out on lap one after struggling with the slippery surface.

Doohan wasn’t the only early casualty, as Carlos Sainz found himself in the

wall, and Formula 1 debutant Isack Hadjar crashed on the formation lap.

Other drivers caught out by the treacherous conditions included Fernando Alonso, Liam Lawson, and Gabriel Bortoleto.

It’s back-to-back weekends for the Formula 1 World Championship, with the Chinese Grand Prix set to take place at Shanghai International Circuit on March 20–23.

SUPERCARS

With heavy rain falling over Albert Park, Supercars’ final race of the weekend was abandoned. The cancellation of the result gave Will Brown the Larry Perkins Trophy victory – making him the first driver to ever win it twice.

Pole sitter Broc Feeney finished the weekend in second place, while Friday’s winner Cameron Hill rounded out the trophy’s third place.

Supercars now heads across to New Zealand for the third round of the 2025 season on 11–13 April at Taupō.

FORMULA 2

Despite multiple attempts to get it underway, FIA Formula 2 Championship’s feature race was abandoned due to the wet conditions.

The Championship’s next round will be on 11–13 April in Bahrain.

FORMULA 3

Friday’s Formula 3 pole sitter Rafael Camara was in a league of his own in Sunday’s Feature Race as he comfortably took out the victory, while Aussie James Wharton had a challenging morning – finishing P21.

In what was a shortened race that started under safety car and finished under a red flag, there was plenty of drama in between with multiple interruptions as the future stars found it difficult to navigate the conditions.

Camara was not one of those drivers as the Brazilian managed to build long gaps over Trident teammate Noel Stromsted – making him a deserving winner of the Feature race when the race was eventually called on lap 18 after a big crash to Christian Ho.

It was unchanged top three from Friday’s Qualifying as Stromsted followed Camara across the line to make it a Trident onetwo, while Théophile Naël rounded out the podium.

As for Wharton, the Victorian started the race further down the order than he qualified after receiving a five-grid place penalty for causing an incident in Saturday’s Sprint Race.

Despite the setback, he managed to gain more than a handful of places during the race to finish higher than where he started.

Formula 3 returns next month at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Sakhir on 11–13 April.

HOW THE RACE WENT FOR

PIASTRI

A tough start for Oscar Piastri as Max Verstappen gets past on Lap 1. But with the home crowd behind him, there was plenty of fight left in this race.

Lap 17: Piastri capitalises on a mistake from Verstappen at Turn 11 to move into P2. The home crowd is on its feet.

Lap 33: Both McLaren drivers are free to race, but Piastri runs wide at Turn 6, losing 1.5 seconds to Norris. A costly moment in the battle.

Lap 34: Alonso crashes, bringing out the safety car. A wave of pit stops follows, with Piastri holding position and switching to hard tyres.

Lap 42: The safety car comes in, with rain still looming. Piastri holds position, but the weather is closing in.

Lap 45: The rain proves costly—Piastri spins in turn 13. He recovers from the grass, switches to intermediates, and rejoins in P15, one lap down with 11 laps to go. A tough break, but the fight isn’t over yet.

Lap 47: The safety car, triggering another wave of pit stops. Piastri moves to P13 as the race heads into its final stages and Lawson and Bortoleto spin out.

Lap 53: Piastri gains two spots, moving up to P11.

Lap 55: With DRS enabled, he makes a clean move on Gasly to break into the top 10. A strong recovery drive in tough conditions.

Final Lap: Piastri fights to the end, making a late move on Lewis Hamilton to take P9. A resilient drive in front of the home crowd as teammate Lando Norris secures victory at Albert Park. Teammate Lando Norris takes the win at Albert Park, delivering a huge moment for McLaren.

A BEHIND THE SCENES EXPERIENCE WITH KICK SAUBER F1 TEAM

Angelique Vitale and Tyra LawlerCass, two alumni of the 2024 FIA Girls on Track – Career Development and Mentoring program, took part in an unforgettable opportunity with Kick Sauber F1 Team.

As part of the FIA Girls on Track program and in collaboration with Motorsport Australia, the girls joined the team as interns during the 2025 Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix, diving headfirst into the exhilarating world of Formula 1.

Selected by Motorsport Australia and Kick Sauber F1 Team, Angelique and Tyra were thrust into the fast-paced environment of a Formula 1 team.

The girls worked closely with Almira Tabakovic, the team’s Head of Sustainability.

“Every morning started with a team briefing, where we ran through the schedule and prepared for the day ahead,” Angelique explained.

“The team’s schedule was incredibly clear and straightforward, but with the fast-paced nature of Formula 1, last-minute adjustments were inevitable,” Tyra said.

One of Angelique and Tyra’s key responsibilities included running garage tours for Kick Sauber F1 Team’s title sponsors.

“We guided partners through the inner workings of the team, providing them with an exclusive behindthe-scenes look at the garage, and ensuring they had a memorable experience,” said Angelique.

“It was a great opportunity to help strengthen the team’s relationships with its commercial partners by bringing them closer to the action.”

The girls had the chance to shadow the Kick Sauber F1 Media Team, gaining a rare glimpse into the world of Formula 1 communications.

“We shadowed Vanessa, the Communications Manager at Kick Sauber, gaining firsthand insight into how a driver’s media duties are managed at the highest level,” Angelique said.

“We observed how print media, broadcast media and the team’s individual media slots were handled, watching the preparation and coordination that goes into ensuring everything runs smoothly.

“Seeing first-hand how a driver’s media commitments are managed, balancing interviews, press obligations, and PR strategy, was an invaluable experience.”

On the Thursday, Angelique and Tyra guided the current Girls on Track participants through the paddock and the Kick Sauber garages.

“Having been part of the program myself just a year ago, it felt surreal

to now be assisting from the other side, contributing to an initiative that had played such a pivotal role in my own journey,” Angelique expressed.

“It was a true full-circle moment and a reminder of how quickly opportunities can evolve when you’re passionate and dedicated to your path.”

This hands-on experience not only provided Angelique and Tyra with an insider’s view of a Formula 1 team but also solidified their aspirations for the future.

“Learning the more granular, technical things about how a F1 team operates has fed my interest and my love for this sport,” Tyra said.

“I would love to be working in partnership management for a Formula 1 team or managing a young driver,” Angelique explained.

Both girls expressed immense gratitude to Kick Sauber F1 Team and Motorsport Australia for this incredible opportunity.

Learning the more granular, technical things about how a F1 team operates has fed my interest and my love for this sport

“I’m headset on becoming a reporter for Formula 1, I’d love to be able to pick up a mic and interview people and help them share their feelings.”

“From the mechanics to managers, there wasn’t one person who didn’t welcome us with open arms,” Tyra expressed.

“The team also expressed genuine gratitude for our help, which is a powerful reminder that even the smallest efforts can make a meaningful impact.”

“A huge part of why I felt so welcomed and valued during my time with the team was thanks to two incredible women: Almira, the Sustainability Manager, and Krystina Emmanouilides, the Senior Aero

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES GOAL!

Motorsport Australia is proud to officially launch Motorsport Australia GOAL!, a STEM education initiative designed to bring the excitement of motorsport into classrooms across the country.

Developed in partnership with The Huddle, Motorsport Australia GOAL! offers six interactive lesson plans that use motorsport to teach core STEM principles to students in Years 5-8.

Since becoming available to schools in mid-2024, the program has already been adopted by 106 schools, with 165 teachers downloading the resources and engaging over 4,600 students nationwide.

Motorsport Australia CEO Sunil Vohra said the launch of GOAL! represents a significant step in making motorsport more accessible to young Australians.

“Motorsport Australia GOAL! is about more than just motorsport – it’s

about inspiring the next generation of engineers, team strategists, and problem solvers,” Vohra said.

“By bringing motorsport into the classroom, we’re providing students with hands-on learning experiences that make STEM education more engaging and relevant.

“Motorsport offers meaningful career options, and Motorsport Australia GOAL! is an early step for STEM pathways into building the skills needed for roles in engineering, data analysis, aerodynamics, and race strategy.”

The program features lessons such as ‘Chance of Victory’, where students learn about probability and team management by allocating a budget across a racing team, and ‘Protecting Eggbert’, which teaches safety principles as students design and test helmets after learning from real racing drivers like Bayley Hall, Porsche Carrera Cup driver.

launched, we’re excited to reach even more schools and continue to show students that motorsport isn’t just about racing – it’s about science, strategy, and teamwork,” said Charlie Barlow, Development Manager, Motorsport Australia.

“Motorsport Australia GOAL! aligned to the Australian Curriculum, ensuring teachers have an accessible and engaging resource that supports student learning and introduces them to the world of motorsport in a way they may not have experienced before.

CAR CLUBS SHOWCASE THEIR BEST

A mainstay of the Australian Grand Prix, our passionate car clubs are shining at Albert Park, with their best vehicles on show for the crowd across the four-day event.

From circuit racing classics to off road ramblers, the Motorsport Australia Sporting and Enthusiast car clubs had something for everyone to admire.

For Brett, a member from the Melbourne Cobra Owners Club, the Grand Prix is a great place to mingle with like-minded enthusiasts.

“It’s about getting out, having a good time, watching good drivers and talking to people about cars,” Brett said.

“It’s different to any other car show, there are a lot more people and there is a lot more to do. It’s all about meeting other people who also love their vehicles.”

Peter, a member of the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria echoed Brett’s comments.

“Being here gives us a great opportunity to talk to people who love Jaguars,” Peter said.

“It also gives us the chance to show off our cars.

“As you can see here today, we’ve got a good range. Right through from the original Sharp racing car, a Lightning McQueen charity XK, plus a few older ones like the Mark 5 and the XK150.”

The Renault Car Club of Victoria also took the opportunity to boast about their impressive Grand Prix line-up.

“The atmosphere here has been good. Excellent in fact,” Andrew, a member of the club said.

“We’ve had a lot of interest, with the two Alpines and the Gordini probably getting the most.

“The Gordini is the sole surviving member of the works rally team.”

Frank, the Membership Secretary of the Austin Healey Sprite Drivers Club expanded on why his club makes an appearance every year.

“It’s a bit of exposure [being at the Grand Prix],” Frank said.

“A lot of people like to stop and look at these old cars. Most

people who stop and look have never seen a Sprite before.

“We’ve had a group of cars on display here for every Grand Prix since 2014. We’ve even done the presentation lap three times.

“Generally we display our cars at various historic race meetings. Ours is just a social club but we have plenty of members that race. A lot compete in hillclimbs or motorkhanas.”

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST F1 ACADEMY DRIVER ANNOUNCED

Aiva Anagnostiadis has been confirmed as Australia’s first driver to ever appear in the F1 Academy series. With the series taking place across seven Formula 1 race weekends, Anagnostiadis will partner with leading open-wheel squad Hitech – starting from Shanghai’s Chinese Grand Prix in late March.

The Anagnostiadis family are no strangers to motorsport, with Aiva’s mother Barbara previously involved in Karting Australia as a driver. Aiva would later join her brother, James, in also taking up karting from the age of six.

Now the plan is to work as hard as I can and be as competitive as possible

“At the time I didn’t have much interest in motorsport, but mum brought us to the track and I thought I want to have a go at this, so we jumped in the kart and that’s when I fell in love with it,” Aiva said.

Anagnostiadis in the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games for Team Australia

In 2022, after representing Team Australia in the FIA Motorsport Games’ Senior Karting category, Anagnostiadis joined Alpine’s Rac(H)er

Academy as she began her transition from karts to open-wheel racing.

“F1 Academy was a goal straight away. To reach that goal has been a dream come true and now the plan is to work as hard as I can and be as competitive as possible,” Anagnostiadis said.

“I want to be a role model for those little girls coming through and be what I didn’t have. We’re trying to break barriers and show girls that there is another pathway and there are opportunities out there.”

While Anagnostiadis’ F1 Academy debut will wait until the Chinese Grand Prix on 21–23 March, Anagnostiadis will be an Ambassador for the Australian Grand Prix in her hometown of Melbourne.

“To be an ambassador of the Australian Grand Prix, my home track, is pretty cool. I was here in 2018 as a grid kid so now to be back taking it all in again as an ambassador is awesome,” Anagnostiadis said.

Aiva also joins recently announced Joanne Ciconte in F1 Academy for 2025. Ciconte, also an Australia is the youngest driver to compete in F1 Academy.

This milestone is considered to be nothing short of remarkable. Ciconte started with Karting Australia at the age of nine, and since this time she has secured multiple State Championship podiums including the title of 2023 Australian Ladies Pink Plate Champion.

She transitioned into Formula 4 (F4), making an immediate impact.

Joanne said this is an important and exciting step in her motorsport career and that she was looking forward to making the most of every opportunity.

“This is something that I’ve been working towards for a long time and to now actually be here makes me more inspired than ever,” Joanne said.

“The F1 Academy has laid the foundations for women all over the world and given us the opportunity to represent our country while showcasing our skills as racing drivers. This would have been very difficult a few years back, a testimony to the impact of this incredible opportunity.

“To be the youngest participant in the 2025 lineup makes me even more proud as I fly the Australian Flag. I’m grateful to be part of this amazing opportunity and for the mentorship from the Pro Racing Management Team, led by Marco Cioci and Giancarlo Fisichella.”

INTENSE NIGHT MASTERS A HIT IN THE WEST

The 2025 WA Sporting Car Club circuit racing season kicked off with 12 hours of action at CARCO.com.au Raceway for the CARCO Night Masters Cup.

Open-top categories and Historic Touring Cars battled for early Championship points throughout the day, treating fans to thrilling on-track duels. As night fell, the closed-top categories took over, their glowing brake rotors cutting through the darkness in a spectacular display of racing.

The event also marked the successful debut of a LED flag signalling system by the club, improving driver safety.

FORMULA CLASSIC

Lance Carwardine proved unstoppable in the Formula Classic category, guiding his Jane Brabham BT 23 to overall victory.

James Hagan battled hard in his Van Dieman FF to secure second overall, while Ricky Virago had the pace in his Ralt RT-5 SV/FA to claim third.

FORMULA VEE

Paul Moltoni kicked off his season in dominant fashion, taking top honours in the 1600cc Formula Vee class with 70 points. The Jacer 99 driver set the pace early, clocking

the fastest lap of 1:07.55 in Race 1 and delivered consistently strong performances across the event.

Mason Legg provided a formidable challenge, particularly in Race 2, where he was the first to take the chequered flag. Legg finished the round in second overall with 63 points. Kathy Lisson clinched outright third place over Rod Lisson.

In the 1200cc class, Danny Cerro was seemingly untouchable, securing a clean sweep of victories. Jonathon Scarey and Campbell Gow completed the outright podium.

FSR

Chris Reindler was the class of the FSR field, taking a dominant clean sweep in all three races. The Lance East Exotics driver set the tone in qualifying with a rapid 55.65-second lap.

Bryce Moore kept the pressure on Reindler, delivering three podium finishes in his Radical SR3 to finish second overall. Rising talent Ruairidh Avern impressed on his FSR debut, piloting his Arise Racing Radical SR3 to third.

HISTORIC TOURING CARS

It was an event of attrition for the Historic Touring Cars field, with half the field falling prey to mechanical and on-

track dramas. A fierce Mustang duel headlined the category, with Brian Edhouse setting the early benchmark in qualifying with a 1:06.48 lap before converting his pace into a Race 1 win.

Peter Pisconeri was hot on Edhouse’s tail in the first two races, but an unfortunate on-track incident halted his campaign in Race 3. It was Cono Onofaro who took outright second for the round in his agile Morris Cooper S with Simon Northey in the BMW 2002 TI securing third.

EXCEL CUP

The Excel Cup was a nail-biter of a round, with the lead between Brett Sherriff and Carlos Ambrosio changing multiple times during each race. Brett Sherriff took the overall victory. Carlos Ambrosio pushed hard throughout the day, claiming victory in Race 2 and setting the fastest Excel lap of the weekend (1:11.93) to secure second overall.

HQ HOLDENS

Michael Howlett’s season was off to the perfect start, topping the timesheets across all events in the HQ Holden category and claiming a perfect round win. Mick Woodbridge’s consistent performances earned him second place, while Grant Ord rounded out the podium.

PRODUCTION CAR, IMPROVED PRODUCTION, AND STREET CARS

In Production Cars, James Gellan’s Mitsubishi Evo IX emerged victorious, holding off Damien Croxon’s Renault Megane RS265 and Brent Peters’ BMW M3 in close battles throughout the event.

Matt Cherry dominated the Improved Production Car field in his Holden Monaro CV8, sweeping all three races and setting the fastest lap of the category at 1:01.20 in Race 3. Jack Clohessy (Subaru WRX Sti) and Nik Mitic (BMW E66 M3) had some tight battles for second and third, but in the end, it was Clohessy securing second outright, with Mitic bringing home third.

Peter Callo was the standout performer in Street Cars, piloting his Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R to a trio of victories. His consistent pace left rivals Christopher Pavey (BMW E36 325) and Garry Utterson (Holden Torana) battling for the minor podium places.

SALOON CARS

In the Holden versus Ford battle, it was Ford fans in the 3K PRO Saloon category who had the bragging rights during the season opener.

Mason Harvey set the pace early in his Ford Falcon AU, securing pole position and converting that qualifying speed into three commanding race victories. Fellow Falcon AU drivers, Jackson Callo and Rob Marcon were trading positions and having

COOK TAKES OUT WET AND WILD KHANACROSS

Round 1 of the 2025 Hervey Bay Motorsport Association Khanacross season kicked off at Maryborough Speedway in February, with the 26 competitors greeted with wet and challenging conditions.

The tricky, mud-filled course proved difficuilt for drivers, as they navigated their way through the first khanacross layout. It was Barry Cook in his Subaru WRX that set the early pace using the all wheel drive system to his advantage and stretching out an early lead.

Shane Logan in his front wheel drive Peugeot 206 struggled in the wet conditions early-on but made huge gains on the drying track throughout Saturday afternoon. Logan finished the day leading the under 2300cc class and sat second Outright behind Barry Cook. Krystle Power in the AWD Subaru Liberty was right on their heels in third place.

Sunday presented a dry track and the pace was frantic. Junior drivers Piper Power and Mitchell Spencer were flying, making up for a slow Saturday, posting faster times than some more experienced drivers.

By Sunday afternoon the drivers had completed an extraordinary 17 runs. Although Logan's Peugeot topped six out of seven heats for Sunday, it wasn’t enough to reel in Cook in his WRX. Power drove strong all day coming home a convincing third place.

Round 2 of the 2025 Hervey Bay Motorsport Association Khanacross will occur at the same location, Maryborough Speedway, on 5-6 April.

FUEL REGULATION CHANGES FOR SXS COMPETITORS

Motorsport Australia would like to inform competitors on an important safety and regulation update regarding permitted fuels for the SXS competition.

As approved by the Australian Off Road Commission (AORCOM), new regulations have been introduced to address concerns regarding the volume of fuel being carried in competition.

As a result, E85 and similar ethanolbased fuels will no longer be permitted for use in SXS classes. Moving forward, competitors must use only Pump Fuel, as defined in Schedule G of the Motorsport Australia Manual

This decision reflects Motorsport Australia’s commitment to safety for the entire motorsport community – competitors, officials, and spectators. It ensures the integrity of competition while upholding the highest safety standards.

Motorsport Australia is dedicated to a safe and fair Off Road racing environment at club, state, and national levels. Safety is a priority for all competitors, and we encourage everyone to review the updated regulations before upcoming events.

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA PAYS TRIBUTE TO ALAN HAMILTON

Motorsport Australia joins the wider motorsport community in honouring the life of Alan Hamilton, who has passed away at the age of 82.

Hamilton’s legacy in Australian motorsport is deeply intertwined with Porsche, a brand he and his family helped establish in the country. His father, Norman Hamilton, was instrumental in bringing Porsche to Australia in 1951, making it only the second market outside Europe. Alan followed in his father’s footsteps, formally joining the business in 1962, where he played a key role in expanding Porsche’s presence and reputation in Australia.

Beyond his contributions off the track, Hamilton was a highly accomplished racer in his own right. His motorsport journey began behind the wheel of a 1954 VW Beetle before progressing to a series of Porsche sports cars, including the iconic 904/8 Bergspyder, the 906, and various 911 models. His most notable near-triumph came in 1969 when he narrowly missed out on the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) title by just a single point, driving a Porsche 911 T/R against the Ford Mustangs of the era.

Hamilton’s influence extended to the country’s greatest endurance

race, the Bathurst 1000. He was part of Ford’s legendary 1-2 finish in the 1977 race, co-driving the second-placed Moffat Ford Dealers Falcon alongside Colin Bond. Across his three starts in the Great Race, Hamilton also raced with Allan Moffat in the factory Ford team and later with Bob Skelton’s Torana squad.

Alan Hamilton was a true figure of Australian motorsport, whose contributions extended well beyond the driver’s seat

A four-time Australian Hillclimb Champion, Hamilton’s driving career was cut short after a major crash in the 1978 Australian Grand Prix at Sandown. However, his passion for the sport never wavered, and he remained actively involved. His influence found success of drivers such as Alfie Costanzo in the Gold Star Championship, while his stable of race-winning Porsche cars

became synonymous with Australian motorsport, driven by the likes of Moffat, Colin Bond, and Alan Jones.

Motorsport Australia CEO, Sunil Vohra, acknowledged Hamilton’s profound impact on the sport, both as a competitor and a key figure in Australian motorsport history.

“Alan Hamilton was a true figure of Australian motorsport, whose contributions extended well beyond the driver’s seat,” Vohra said.

“His efforts in establishing and growing Porsche’s footprint in Australia were remarkable, but it was his skill behind the wheel that cemented his legacy in our sport.

To come within a single point of winning an Australian Touring Car Championship in a Porsche 911 was an extraordinary achievement.

“Alan was also a fierce competitor at some of Australia’s most prestigious events, including the Bathurst 1000 and the Australian Grand Prix. His presence will be deeply missed, but his contributions to motorsport in this country will not be forgotten.”

Motorsport Australia extends its deepest condolences to Alan Hamilton’s family and friends during this time.
