A SEASON OF GRATITUDE
Christmas is often a time of reflection, connection and care. At MND Queensland, those themes are at the heart of what we do all year round, and never more so than at this time of year.
As we approach the end of 2025, I want to take this moment to speak about something that matters deeply to us: gratitude.
“ We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated to MND Queensland, not just this year, but in every year before it. Every single donation, no matter the amount, represents something much bigger than dollars. It is a sign of trust. It tells us that you believe in what we do, that you care about people living with MND, and that you are placing that care in our hands”.
We do not take that lightly. When you donate to MND Queensland, we see it as a privilege and a responsibility. Our promise is to turn that trust into action. To deliver high-quality, personalised care to people across Queensland who are impacted by this devastating disease. I hope that when you see the impact of our work, the range of services we provide and the compassion with which it is delivered,
you feel that your donation has been well spent.
We are incredibly grateful to our volunteers, who give so generously of their time and expertise. Some have been with us for many years. They just keep showing up for the MND community, always in good spirits and always ready to help however they can. We are very fortunate to have such committed people by our side.
We are also thankful to our clients and their families. Thank you for trusting us with your care. Thank you for allowing our team into your homes, your journeys and your lives.
That trust does not just impact your individual experience. It has ripple effects. For those of our clients who are NDIS-funded and purchase services through MND Queensland, you are helping us do something powerful. You are helping us deliver care to people who cannot access the same support. In Australia, anyone diagnosed with MND at age 65 or older is excluded from the NDIS, leaving them with far less funding for essential care. This is one of the most entrenched and unjust inequalities we face.
But thanks to the support of our donors, our volunteers and the choices of our NDIS-funded clients to work with us, we are able to stretch further. Every Queenslander with MND deserves expert, tailored and timely care. And together, you are helping us move closer to that goal.
Christmas and Community
We know that Christmas is not always easy. For some, it brings joy and connection. For others, it is a time of grief, change or uncertainty. For people living with MND, and for the families walking alongside them, it can be a particularly emotional time of year.
Wherever you find yourself this Christmas, I hope you can pause and feel the strength of this community around you. A community built on compassion, generosity and shared purpose.
On behalf of everyone at MND Queensland, thank you for being part of this community. You make our work possible. And we will continue to walk beside you. In gratitude, in hope and in care.
Wishing you peace and comfort this festive season,
A CONNECTION AT THE HEART OF CARE
Each year, MND Queensland seeks to deepen our understanding of what matters most to the people we support. Our 2025 Client and Carer Survey once again reminded us that compassion, connection and care remain at the heart of what we do.
This year, 59 people shared their thoughts and experiences, painting a moving picture of the relationships that shape our services.
“The entire team is amazing. The practical support and care is over and above what is normally provided.”
“Everything that I’ve needed so far has been addressed promptly and effectively.”
“The overall vibe and sense of belonging is wonderful.”
These words speak volumes, and we don’t take them for granted.
Listening and Learning
Our overall satisfaction score reached an outstanding 9.59 out of 10, reflecting the trust and gratitude expressed by the MND community. Clients reported feeling heard, connected and supported—affirming the value of our person-centred approach.
Support Coordination, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology all achieved excellent results, with over 85% of respondents rating their experience as excellent or very good. People particularly appreciated our team’s knowledge, warmth and responsiveness.
“Efficient, warm and gave an overall demeanour of ‘I-getthings-done’ with a sprinkle of appropriate humour.”
Equipment hire services were highly rated for speed and quality, which can make a significant difference to comfort and independence.
Some respondents shared constructive feedback around regional access, communication consistency and education availability. These insights will guide our work as we expand accessible online learning, strengthen communication and explore creative regional engagement.
Beyond Clinical Care: The Power of Connection
A strong theme throughout the survey was connection. Many people spoke of the reassurance of knowing MND Queensland is “just a phone call away” and the comfort of feeling less alone.
This aligns with the growing international movement of social prescribing, which recognises that wellbeing is shaped not only by medical care but also by social participation. Originating in the UK and now adopted across Australia, social prescribing links people to activities and relationships that nurture meaning, joy and identity—a prescription for belonging.
A Role for Our Volunteers
Our volunteers already embody the spirit of social prescribing through friendly calls, companionship and
support at social activities. We’re now exploring ways to expand these opportunities, recognising that social connection is as vital to health as diet or exercise.
By viewing these contributions through the lens of social prescribing, we highlight their true impact: small acts of connection that can lift someone’s day—and often their wellbeing.
Looking Forward
The 2025 survey results reaffirm that MND Queensland is trusted, responsive and deeply human. As we celebrate these achievements, we’re also embracing opportunities to further strengthen social connection within our holistic care approach.
To every client and carer who shared their voice: thank you. You are shaping how we care and connect.
“Before I came into contact with MND Queensland I was overwhelmed and stressed. I am now so much more relaxed, knowing I have such a brilliant team to support and advocate for me.”
This is what our work is about: care that connects, and connection that comforts.

LIVING WITH MND - ROBBIE’S STORY
WHEN MND CHANGES EVERYTHING - LOVE HOLDS STEADY.
While motor neurone disease (MND) most often affects people between the ages of 50 and 70, what many don’t realise is that it can strike at any age.
When Robert, or Robbie as his family affectionately calls him, was diagnosed with MND at just 32, everything changed. Not just for him, but for everyone who loves him.
Robbie lives with his parents, Teresa and David, in their family home in Yandina on the Sunshine Coast — the same home where he grew up surrounded by sport, hard work, and a close-knit community.
Before MND, Robbie worked full-time as a concrete batcher in the family business — a hands-on, demanding job he took pride in. He was meticulous, dependable, and deeply proud of his work. His parents were proud too.
Then came the small sign of MND. A little weakness in his left hand. A moment that didn’t feel right. Teresa still remembers it vividly. They were packing for a long-awaited trip to the Rugby League World Cup — just the two of them. “I asked him to lift his suitcase,” she recalls. “He tried with his left hand and said, ‘I can’t.’ He wasn’t joking — he really
couldn’t. But with his right, no problem. That was the moment that stuck with me.”
Over the months that followed, weakness turwned into worry. Muscle twitches became harder to ignore. And then on the 12 July 2023 the family was told that Robbie had MND.
“It was like the air left the room,” Teresa says quietly. “The ground just fell away beneath us.”
MND is relentless. It doesn’t just affect one person — it ripples through the lives of all those who love them.
Since Robbie’s diagnosis, Teresa and David have become his full-time carers. Each day brings new challenges — helping with showering, dressing, eating, and the everyday moments most of us take for granted.
For Robbie, the loss of independence has been hard, but so has the emotional tole on Teresa. “It’s heartbreaking”, “This isn’t what you ever imagine doing for your adult child,” she says softly. “But we do it because we love him. We
do it because we’re a family.”
And through it all, Robbie’s sense of humour shines.
“He’s still Robbie,” Teresa smiles. “He makes us laugh every day. We cry sometimes too — but we laugh a lot. That’s how we survive this.”
When Robbie’s asked what he hopes people remember him for, he doesn’t hesitate:
“My sense of humour.”
He still cheers for his team, the Cowboys. He adores his Labrador puppy. “You can’t change what’s happening,” he says. “You just face it — one day at a time.”
In those early, overwhelming weeks after the diagnosis, Teresa and David didn’t know where to begin.
“It’s such a complex disease,” Teresa says.
“We were lost. And then our MND Queensland Advisor came into our lives.”
That Advisor became their lifeline. Helping the family register with MND Queensland,
navigate the NDIS, and connect with the right specialists and services.
“She just made everything make sense,” Teresa says. “She knew what to do when we didn’t. It felt like she pulled all the pieces together so we could breathe again.”
Now, through MND Queensland, Robbie has a dedicated team supporting him; including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, and speech pathology. He also attends a local support group where he connects with others living with MND — a place where understanding comes naturally.
him, raising over $12,000 in support. And one family friend, Gary Dunbar is cycling across Europe in Riding for Robert, a fundraiser that’s already brought in more than $16,000 to support both MND research and care.
Their kindness reminds Teresa that even in the hardest times, community can carry you.
“People have been amazing,” she says. “Knowing we’re not alone makes all the difference.”
Behind every person living with MND is a network of people who love them fiercely — parents, partners, children, friends. MND doesn’t just take away strength. It takes away
“She just made everything make sense,” Teresa says. “She knew what to do when we didn’t. It felt like she pulled all the pieces together so we could breathe again.”
This wrap-around care isn’t just about Robbie. It’s also about giving families like Robbies— Teresa, David, and their wider circle — the support they need to cope, to keep going, and to stay connected as a family for as long as possible.
Robbie’s mates and the local footy club have rallied around
plans, dreams, and the simple ease of daily life.
And that’s why MND Queensland exists — to step in, fill the gaps, and walk beside families through the hardest moments of their lives.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Robbie and Teresa

OUR INCREDIBLE COMMUNITY FUNDRAISERS
GARY DUNBAR - RIDING FOR ROBERT
If you’re not following Gary yet, you should be! Gary is cycling around Europe in support of his good friend’s son, Robert Cordwell. So far, Gary has already raised over $16,000. He shares regular updates and stunning photos from his journey, making you feel like you’re right there with him (minus the leg cramps). Incredible cause, inspiring effort.
Keep it up, Gary!
TRIVIA NIGHT
What an incredible result from the QEP PIA Trivia Night! Raising over $6600. One of the organisers, Emma, shared her personal connection to MND on the night—prompting others to open up about their own experiences. This is exactly why community events like this matter. Once the conversation begins, it becomes clear just how many people have been touched by MND. For a disease that can be incredibly isolating, these moments of community connection are truly powerful.
GOLD COAST CHARITY LUNCH
A heartfelt thank you to John Noughton for organsing another incredible Johnny McCowen Cup! Thanks to the generosity of those in attendance, we were able to raise close to $30,000. This special event honours the memory of Johnny McCowen, a devoted father and husband who tragically passed away from MND at just 42 years old. This year’s golf day was also held with the support of The Carl Webb Foundation. Carl Webb, the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Origin legend, sadly lost his battle with MND in December 2023, also at the age of 42. Both Johnny and Carl faced this devastating disease with incredible strength, courage, and grace. We’d like to extend a special thank you to the guest speakers: Shane Webcke, Lote Tuqiri and Solomoni Junior Rasolea. Your presence and words meant so much to everyone involved. We look forward to doing it all again next year.
For another year the incredible ladies from Gold Coast Locals Charity Lunch have come together to raise an incredible $8290 for MND Queensland. We are so grateful for your continued support and we look forward to joining you all again next year.
BUNDABERG EARLY HOLDEN CLUB
Through two huge Bunnings BBQ’s the Bundaberg Early Holden Club was able to raise $3000 for MND Queensland. Event like this go to show you do not need a big fancy event to raise life changing funds. Thank you again Bundaberg Early Holden Club, we are so grateful for your support.
JOHNNY MC COWAN CUP
SPRING FLING
What a fabulous day! A huge THANK YOU to our organiser Yvon Santons as well as all those who attended our Spring Fling event at the Imperial Hotel.

800KM WITH MND FOR MND
If you’re looking for inspiration, look no further than Richard Rawnsley. Diagnosed with bulbar onset MND in February 2025, Richard has refused to let his diagnosis define him. He is currently walking 800 km via Tolosana in France to raise vital funds and awareness for MND—and he’s already raised $3,500, with no plans of slowing down. Richard’s determination is nothing short of extraordinary. If his journey inspires you, please consider showing your support on his fundraising page:
Emma Wadwell organised "Cool Down for a Cure", featuring an adult inflatable water slide! It looked like so much fun, and they were able to raise over $4,200 Queensland.
Despite never having run more than 20km before,Tahlia decided to do a 100km ultra trail race through the subtropical rainforests of the Sunshine Coast’s Blackall Range. Determined to carry her Aunt Christine, who is living with MND, in her heart every step of the way. At the 20km mark, her Aunt called to cheer her on. “My Aunt has difficulty talking now, but I could hear her cheering me on. The feels were, and still are, beyond words. It’s a phone call I’ll hold dear for the rest of my life.”
Her mantra kept her going: “I move because I still can. I move for me. I move for Aunty Christine.” So far Tahlia has raised over $3,400. What an incredible achievement Tahlia, you should be so proud!
HERVEY BAY COMMUNITY WALK WALKERS: 130 - RAISED:$17,000

WALKING TOGETHER TO DEFEAT MND
Together we have raised more than $300,000 through the 2025 Walks to Defeat MND. But the impact of these walks is far more than financial. We are continually inspired by the families affected by MND. Their willingness to share their stories and the way they show up with so much love and strength. These walks are a celebration of resilience, and the unbreakable bonds that form when communities unite to make a real difference. We are so proud of what has been achieved this year, we can’t wait to see what we can achieve in 2026! These three walks are just the most recent part of eight events held across Queensland this year.
BUNDABERG
WALKERS: 187

STAFF PROFILE: SOPHIA VASSIE
When did you join MND QLD and why?
With a decade of volunteer management experience across Australia and the UK, my passion has always been creating meaningful impact through grassroots community participation. I’m motivated by the power of shared interests to build social connection, particularly for people experiencing isolation. Since joining MND Queensland in mid-2025, my focus has been on strengthening Volunteer Services to create lasting impact for the MND community across Queensland—a community that often receives less mainstream attention. I aim to empower volunteers, and the wider community, to understand that even when their impact isn’t immediately visible, every minute they give makes a genuine and lasting difference.
In what ways does Volunteer Services support people living with MND?
Volunteer Services play a vital role in supporting people living with MND. Volunteers provide social connection and practical assistance through programs such as the Legacy Program and Social Companion Program, helping to reduce isolation, foster community, and ensure clients and families feel supported throughout their MND journey.
They also assist our operational teams in a variety of ways, including administrative support, contributing marketing and fundraising expertise, and supporting our warehouse and equipment team. Volunteers are also essential to fundraising and awareness activities such as the Walk to Defeat MND, Bunnings BBQs, Christmas Gift Wrap, and Community Pop-Ups.
These contributions allow MND Queensland to focus more
time and resources directly on supporting clients while also boosting fundraising potential - a critical factor, as the organisation receives no government funding.
What is your favourite volunteer program?
My favourite programs are the Legacy Program and the Social Companion Program. The Legacy Program is a volunteer-led initiative that supports people living with MND to create their personal ‘Legacy’ - whether that’s a traditional life story or something more creative like fiction, recipe collections, or family trees. The Social Companion Program matches clients and volunteers based on shared interests, helping to build meaningful social connections, increase community access, and focus on each person’s hobbies, passions, and identity beyond their MND experience.
Why do you think volunteers are so important for people living with MND and their families?
Social Companion volunteers, in particular, create moments of joy and normalcy in what can be an incredibly challenging journey and make a significant difference in reducing social isolation for clients and carers whose communities may quickly become less accessible as the condition progresses.
What makes them especially valuable is that they are often the only people, outside of family and friends, who engage with clients in a purely voluntary capacity. They choose to be involved, with genuine mutual interests, and are often motivated by personal connections to MND, bringing with them a deep sense of empathy and understanding for the journey our clients are on.
What are the benefits to volunteers and how can they get involved
Volunteering with MND Queensland offers a range of meaningful benefits. Many volunteers tell us that being part of our programs gives them a strong sense of purpose and connection. They gain insight into the experiences of people living with MND, develop new skills, and build confidence in working within a supportive health and community environment. It’s also a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, contribute their unique skills, and see the real impact of their time and effort. As previously mentioned, there’s also flexibility in how people can get involved.
