My fiancé, for example, is firmly attached to the ‘wing it’ approach. He typically spends the hour before we’re airport-bound throwing a handful of crumpled tops and un-ironed bottoms into a suitcase, and a bottle of SPF 50 tossed somewhere amongst the clothing chaos for good measure. I however, take a more calculated approach. Outfits are planned weeks in advance, neatly arranged in the order I plan to wear them, with coordinating accessories each in their relevant packing cubes.
Whether you fall into ‘camp organised’ or ‘camp anything goes’, you’ll want to be packing your bags this month. But there’s no need to dig out that passport: there’s a whole host of unique staycations to discover right here in the UAE. In the Dubai desert, Tomorrowland presents its take on a desert retreat complete with luxurious lodges, a vibrant pool scene and festivals of world-famous pedigree. Sharjah’s glorious Mleiha desert has now made way for a glamping destination where dome tents come with private pools, and barbecues to grill your own dinner. Then there’s the grand unveiling of Atlantis The Royal, one of the world’s most awaited hotels. Take your pick from p19.
Between relaxing staycations, in this issue we also present 42 reasons to dig out your dancing shoes. After two years of restrictions and regulations, the nightlife industry is back and bigger than ever, so what better way to celebrate than dishing out awards to the very best in the business? Turn to page 27 for all the winners of the What’s On Nightlife Awards 2022. We challenge you to visit them all this season.

UAE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…
Who are you, and what made you famous?
My name is Rabih Fakhreddine and I am the Founder and CEO of 7 Management, the company that created, owns and operates venues including Seven Sisters, Antika, The Theater, BO18.DXB, February 30 Beach, Café Beirut and Lucia’s. I’m not sure I’m famous but I can say that any success or fame I may have results largely from my incredibly creative, hardworking team, dedicated international partners and, mostly importantly, our amazing, life-loving customers.
How long have you been in the UAE?
It has been almost four
years since I started working between the UAE and Lebanon. It has felt like home from day one.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
Honestly, there aren’t typical days in our industry. In fact, I would say working days and nights is more accurate given the strong after-hours element of business at 7 Management. That being said, generally I try to spend as much time as I can with my wife and children before going to the office, or ‘the kitchen’ as I like to call it, and making things happen with my work family. There is never a dull moment and always something to get excited about.
Can you tell us about your upcoming venues for the remainder of 2022?
Over the next few months, The Palm will see an eclectic bar and lounge called Black Flamingo open in the Radisson Hotel, as well as Café Beirut by The Sea in The Fairmont. We will also introduce our vibrant new
Italian concept, Limonata to Dubai, which will be perfectly situated on Vista Mare. Last, but certainly not least, our team is putting the final touches to a one-of-a-kind, curated World Cup experience hosted in Jumeirah Emirates Towers. We also have great plans for the rest of the Gulf, such as Lucia’s, Seven Sisters and Antika in Saudi and soon Antika in Manama, Bahrain.
Any surprises you can share with us for next year?
Those seeking a thrill can look forward to trying a new experience that will change the Dubai dining experience. We’ll share the big announcement very soon.
What makes a restaurant or venue successful?
It’s the full experience. You can’t just have one great element and leave the rest to chance. We believe that our customers want it all; great food, service that is secondto-none delivered in a space that speaks volumes and with unforgettable entertainment. The days and nights customers spend with us, stay with them for a lifetime.
How would you describe the Dubai hospitality scene in three words?
Adventurous, passionate, and edgy.
Do you think Dubai will be your forever home?
Will I always live here? I can’t say, but having my business here, marrying my wife and raising children here, it will always be home in one way or another.
“MY SUCCESS IS DOWN TO MY INCREDIBLY CREATIVE, HARDWORKING TEAM AND PARTNERS”

When you need a break from the bustle of the city, head for the Hatta hills. A 90-minute drive out of Dubai, this mountainous region of the UAE has undergone a renaissance in recent years and it’s got endless appeal for adventurers. The latest addition to its array of glamping options – which already range from cosy wooden lodges to a retro caravan camp – is Hatta Dome Park. A collection of 15 dome-shaped tents come with a swish Dubai upgrade, each fitted with a mini-fridge, TV and a hair dryer. Each one has a panoramic window for making the most of the scenic setting, and its own neat outdoor area with a private barbecue and a fire pit, where guests can gather for storytelling or toasting marshmallows after a day of adventure. What you’re really here for though, is to take advantage of the myriad outdoor activities on your doorstep. Hike or mountain bike your way across the trails of varying difficulty, or take a short stroll from Hatta Dome Park to the Wadi Hub, where adrenaline-pumping activities such as wall climbing, ziplining, paragliding and water slides await. Then there’s skill-based fun like archery or axe throwing where you can compete against your mates, or more low-tempo experiences, such as a sunset horse ride. Hatta Dome Park, Hatta, from Dhs1,675. For a retreat away from the city, journey to Mysk Moon Retreat in Sharjah. The luxury glamping site has reopened for winter and offers a unique experience. Home to 10 domes and six private tents, your getaway will be packed with breathtaking desert views, desert activities and more. Most of the pretty domes have their own private pool but all come with a large terrace and a private barbecue space. If you require more space, opt for a private tent. There’s a two-bedroom private tent perfect for families, which comes with a private pool and terrace space. Couples can opt for a one-bedroom tent, which includes just the terrace. All options come with the necessary DIY barbecue equipment, beds, an air conditioner, a refrigerator, a bathroom and a toilet. For the barbecue, you will be provided with coal and all the meats (or vegetables) and condiments you will need to have some grilling fun. A menu is given before your staycation where you can pick your breakfast, lunch and dinner packages. Post sunset, head outdoors to warm up by the bonfire, peek through a telescope and see the moon (and maybe even Jupiter), watch a movie, have a go at archery or just relax under the stars. Arise early the next day and join a guide to catch the sunrise.

With 14 exclusive half-dome structures, built to seamlessly blend into the surrounding dunes, each sleeps two people (plus two children upon request). There are three options: sunset-facing, sunrisefacing, and dune-facing. All of the Nests face out in a semi-circle, ensuring privacy and seclusion for every guest. The Nest is spacious and well-furnished, decorated with rattan tables and boho elements to give it the Sonara touch. It wouldn’t be fair to call the Nest a tent. This is a solid structure, fitted out with a proper bed, fully functional bathroom with a shower and double sink, plus a desk,
cushion day bed, fire pit and minibar. In the centre of the camp are modern four-poster boho lounge areas with chic white sofas and rattan table set up under a canopy of fairy lights. There’s also a bar serving a range of fine wines and cocktails, and a mini-kitchen offering wood-fired pizzas and tapas. After sunset, the camp offers a star-gazing experience, where guests are driven further into the desert and told about the mysteries of astronomy. Other activities are also on offer, such as early morning camel rides in the desert. In the morning, wooden tables are set up under macrame parasols and an impressive spread is laid out. You can choose your eggs from a menu, while pastries, fresh fruit, cold cuts, cheese, granola, bagels and more make their way to your tables.

Dubai is a welcome playground for party people. But it’s easy to forget the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make it all happen. Every year, without fail, What’s On recognises the faces and places that make the city come alive in the What’s On Nightlife Awards.
Across 21 categories, the awards focus on the UAE’s best nightlife venues, party nights, promo events and so much more.
This year’s winners were revealed at the What’s On Nightlife Awards party on October 26 at the gorgeous Zero Gravity, and it shaped up to be a right old knees-up. Think ‘friendly’ rather than ‘formal’ and ‘lively’ rather than ‘lame’.

This year the event will have three stages, all given a 2022 glow-up, playing host to some brilliant headline performers. The main stage, Frequency on 8, is back and bigger than ever, with international headliners on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Frequency on 8 stage will welcome British DJ duo Gorgon City, bringing their heady mix of big room house and underground heaters to The Sevens Stadium. Fans can expect an unforgettable set of some of their biggest productions from over a decade spent in music. Ravers get ready for the likes of Imagination, There for You and Ready for Your Love
Closing the show on the Frequency on 8 stage will be Craig David presents TS5 on Saturday night. From humble beginnings as an exclusive pre-party hosted by the man himself, TS5 is Craig David’s unique mix of singing, DJing and emceeing all while working the crowd. Expect to hear musical magic that ranges from old school anthems to swing beats and, of course, a few Craig David bangers including 7 Days, Fill Me In, Walking Away, and Rewind
The Beats on Two stage will host performances on all three days of the tournament, with three levels, VIP experiences and a special performance from the Cuban Brothers on Saturday to have you partying all the way to the finals. As comedy hip-hop cabaret acts go, this trio are irresistibly fun – and they’re kind of a big deal. Their highenergy parody sets have seen them sell out global tours, and their mix of funk, soul and hip-hop hits with breakdancing and banter make for an utterly bonkers show that needs to be seen to be believed.

Every few months we like to invite our readers for, what we consider to be, the best staycation deal in the UAE. We choose the hotel, bring along some cool activations, arrange a delicious brunch, breakfast, and more. This time, we partnered with the fantastic Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island in Ras al Khaimah for a weekend of pure bliss. Our guests enjoyed a morning yoga class, followed by TEPfactor’s mind-boggling puzzles, and a massage at Citrine Spa. After a quick freshen up, we reconvened at Boons for an afternoon brunch. We ate, we laughed, and we danced before heading upstairs for sundowners and the
afterparty at Neo Sky Bar. We ended the night in the comfort of our plush guest rooms, woke up to endless sea views, and headed to a bottomless breakfast at ULA while ARTfem put on a relaxing art session. Even though we nabbed a late check-out, we could have sunbathed by that pool all day. Needless to say, we really did not want to leave.
Sitting within Dubai’s copy-paste Shoreditch recreation that is Boxpark lies a new restaurant totally at odds with its location, and all the better for it. RSVP eschews the cafés and restaurant chains we know so well, in favour of an upscale DIFC feel. You could be inside a classy bistro in Paris, with the marble table tops, customised napkins, and elegant artwork displayed on its walls.
The mood is a nice surprise alone. The unlicensed restaurant is full on a Tuesday night, though we probably shouldn’t be so surprised. RSVP is fully curated and managed by Atelier House Hospitality, the firm behind Michelin-starred 11 Woodfire, award-winning DIFC restaurant Marea, and the popular homegrown concept Mohalla.
At RSVP, Atelier’s fifth restaurant opening, the food combines the elegance of an old-world French eatery – hence
the ‘repondez, s’il vous plait’ name –with subtle influences of Asian flavours. Spearheaded by Aadel Ouaoua, a chef de cuisine with a considerable Michelin-starred background, offers a menu of regional French delicacies interspersed with unusual oriental dishes. A portion of escargot, for example, bookends the hot starters with chicken spring rolls. “My inspiration comes from my extensive travels across the globe and my love for French-Mediterranean cuisine combined with a deep affection for Japanese culinary techniques. Marrying these three elements results in RSVP’s unique offering,” explains chef Aadel.
The creamy cheese stracciatelle dip (Dhs40) topped with a tomato compote and basil oil is a lovely starter, great for mopping up with the homemade VP bread (Dhs18) served as a crunchy French stick. The tuna and avocado tartare (Dhs95)
is a perfect mix of blue fin tuna chunks, sesame, and well-seasoned guacamole topped with shredded nori. The charcoal smoked lamb chops (Dhs230), served to the table in a delightful oval pan, rivalled LPM’s famous dish. The meat was thick and tender while the sticky jus with teriyaki sauce packed umami flavour. Dipping RSVP’s superb homemade French fries (Dhs35) into the lamb chops’ jus counts as one of our favourite dining moments in Dubai this year.
Ending with the fondant au chocolat (Dhs60) and its chocolate crumble base may be a little too fluffy for pedants, but by this point you’ve been wellfed and generally swept up in the joie de vivre of it all.

The Best of Broadway brunch aims to bring a touch of showbiz to the brunch scene
With a name like ‘Best of Broadway,’ the expectations for Bull and Bear’s new brunch were nothing short of some top-shelf razzle-dazzle. We were told to expect a fusion of 1920s art deco with 2020s modern cuisine. Upon arrival, we’re handed our ‘Broadway tickets’, which give access to a world of splendour. We marvel at our surroundings as we’re greeted with a choice of bubbly or ice-cold beer, before sitting at a table overlooking the iconic Burj Khalifa. With the sound of jazz music filling the air, our anticipation heightens for the afternoon ahead.
Bull and Bear’s brunch offers table service from a set menu, allowing all guests to repeat appetisers and main courses to their heart’s desire. We start off with a tray of oysters on dry ice. Fresh and tasty, the starter matched the brunch’s drama and teased us with what we would experience thereafter. To follow, small plates of Asianstyle tuna niçoise, beef tartare and avocado
mousse arrive, with salty crinkle-cut homemade crisps. Delicious and refined, the combination of these flavours worked perfectly without filling us up too much.
Next up: an impressive platter of beef sliders, truffle mushroom arancini and spicy prawn bao buns. The arancini was a highlight, with a perfectly crispy exterior and gooey filling, with just enough truffle to be rich and indulgent without being sickly. The beef sliders were a fun addition, but not our favourite pick, while the prawn bao buns and arancini were reordered countless times. The menu included a vegetarian slider with a crispy and well-seasoned mini falafel patty for our meat-free guest. Although while it was an enjoyable starter, it did not have quite the same creative flair as our meaty mains.
Cocktail options include the ‘Wicked’, made with spirits, pineapple and lemon to create the ideal combination of sweet and sour that was truly wicked.
For mains, a platter of braised short ribs with foie gras and truffle arrives, as well as striploin wagyu slices with fresh and fragrant chimichurri. At the risk of sounding cliché, the meats were cooked to perfection, with the striploin melting in our mouth and the ribs sliding off the bone. The sides were a hit too, including undeniably delicious grilled prawns with wasabi crème and saffron aioli. Harrisaroasted potatoes and corn on the cob were also an ideal accompaniment, with jazzy seasoning maintaining the drama of the dishes.
To polish off a splendid day, we receive an array of desserts. Fresh fruit, ice cream, sorbet, and more. The star of the show was a banoffee pie with speculoos crumble, which had us resisting the urge to lick the bowl clean. The platter went down a treat along with our seemingly bottomless Prosecco glasses.
Bull and Bear, Waldorf Astoria DIFC, Saturdays, 1pm to 5pm, Dhs300 with soft drinks, Dhs495 with house drinks and Dhs750 sparkling. Tel: (0)4 515 9888. bullandbeardifc.com
Bull and Bear is the perfect location for a luxurious Saturday thanks to its bygone glamour, cuttingedge cuisine, and attentive service.
Claw BBQ has everything needed to be a great all-American bar.
Pool table? Check. Good music? Check. Delicious food and drinks? You guessed it, check again. As we walk in, we’re greeted by friendly staff and a lively atmosphere, ready to indulge in a fun night out.
We start the night with two cocktails, ‘lychee blossom’ (Dhs63) and ‘hurricane’ (Dhs55), both of which were flavourful without being overly strong. The lychee blossom had notes of hibiscus and was well-presented, served in a martini glass. Hurricane, which came in a mason jar, was equally
refreshing, blending different flavours of orange for a fruity taste.
The venue is creatively designed with a welcoming outdoorindoor area that’s perfect to enjoy throughout the cooler months. The ground floor is scattered with TV screens for all your sporting needs, with booth-style seating as well as high tables and bar stools. And what visit to Claw is complete without a ride on the Bucking Bronco? There’s also giant Jenga, a beer pong table, and pinball machines. Upstairs, there’s a private dining area, which groups can hire out, complete with its own bar.
Back to our table, we’re ready for some nibbles. We share chips and guac (Dhs67), a side of cornbread (Dhs23) and Claw’s signature buffalo shrimp (Dhs69). The guacamole is prepped tableside, accompanied by an entertaining dancing waiter. It’s prepared just to our liking – not super spicy with a nice balance of onion, tomato, and avocado. The buffalo shrimp is thinly battered – which we’re told is all made in-house – and has just the right amount of kick to it.
Last but not least we share a mango flavoured ‘Lagerita’ (Dhs62) – a large icy combination of beer and margarita. It was a little bit sour but overall packed a serious punch. To round the evening out we finish with a peanut butter chocolate s’more (Dhs39), a decadent dish, but worth every bite. Made with homemade marshmallow and cookies, it was a ridiculously tasty way to finish the evening.

good vibe with the potential to become our new regular. It’s a hoot!
The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (F1) will be taking place between November 17 and 20 and will encompass so much more than just ‘cars going round a track’. There are the After-Race Concerts, the sophisticated and occasionally less sophisticated viewing parties, elite Michelinapproved dining pop-ups, and yes, very fast cars going round a track, very quickly.
You’re probably already aware, but just in case you’re the sort of fair-weather fan that’s along for the fun and picks who they cheer for on the basis of car colour, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the final race of the season. This year the Abu Dhabi finale will likely be a victory lap for Verstappen who already
has a titanic tally of race wins under his belt. But winners never take their foot off the pedal – Hamilton will be out for vindication, and Mercedes are still battling it out with Ferrari for second place in the team leader boards. There’s still a lot that will be decided over the long November weekend.
staged at what is now known as Etihad Park (the artist hub formally known as du Arena) Abu Dhabi’s Yasalam After-Race Concerts are the stuff of legend. A gloriously eclectic mix of triple A talent is jetting to the capital to perform for one night only after each day’s motorsport sessions. And the only way to see them play is to hold track tickets for whichever day the artist is performing. You cannot purchase concert tickets separately.
them play is to catering
The confirmed artists for the Abu Dhabi F1 2022, are EDM maestros, Swedish House Mafia, headlining the show on Friday, November 18, and member of the rap aristocracy, Kendrick Lamar taking his brooding philosophical bars to the stage on Saturday, November 19.
That still leaves Thursday’s opener, which tends to be something catering for the younger, on-trend audiences, and Sunday, the mega artist, to close out proceedings with a back catalogue of sing-along bangers.
W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island transforms into a nonstop F1-esta zone during race weekend, with every available venue and viewing deck space given over to brunches, drunches and rave-ups all within earroaring proximity to the iconic Yas Marina circuit — often with unmatched views of the action.
Every year to go along with the many established permanent culinary seats in the capital, the F1 brings a host of internationally renowned, award-winning restaurant popups. For foodies, even race fan ones, the on-plate theatre on offer can be equally, if not more, exhilarating than that on-track. This year will be no different. Already confirmed as the Grand Prix’s gastronomic companions include Cé La Vi, Gohan, Ninive and Opa.
But for something a little different, Xclusive Yachts is offering an armada of alternative race-celebrating boat parties, with jawdropping musical acts on (the) deck(s). Their Friday event includes a Rudimental DJ set, and Marvin ‘JLS’ Humes. On Saturday you’ll see artful lyricist Tinie (formally Tinie Tempah) followed by garage double act DJ Luck & MC Neat. On Sunday it’s Nathan ‘Lighter’ Dawe and Yungen. It’s all being hosted by Patrick Nazemi and Rick Live. For prices and to book, you’ll need to call (0)55 729 0415.
Stay tuned to WhatsOn.ae for further announcements as we get them.
It’s time to warm up your vocal cords as the king of modern-day ballads, Lewis Capaldi, is returning to the UAE on November 28. After performing in both Sharjah and Abu Dhabi’s F1 After-Race Concert, this will be the Scottish singer-songwriter’s first show in Dubai, when he’ll be taking over the Coca-Cola Arena. Famous for his outlandish Instagram stories, hilariously posing in various costumes, and writing some
really great tunes, Lewis Capaldi shot to fame in 2017, when his first track Bruises made him the fastest selling unsigned artist to amass 25 million plays on Spotify.
Capaldi’s stage career began at age four, when on a holiday to France, he took part in a talent show and sang Queen’s We Are the Champions. From there his selfconfessed ‘love of attention’ propelled him into learning guitar and practicing his singing and song writing. His
Heartfelt Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi returns to the UAE
popularity in Scotland grew as he played more live gigs and open mic nights around his area. At age 13 he auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, which he was rejected from before reaching the TV rounds.
When Capaldi was 18, he was discovered by his long-term manager, Ryan Walter, via an iPhone recording uploaded to his SoundCloud account. After the success of Bruises, Capaldi’s breakthrough single Someone You Loved charted in 29 countries in early 2019, spending seven weeks at number one in the UK chart. His debut album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent followed in May, which became the best-selling album in the UK in five years, spending five weeks at number one in its first six weeks of release.
Capaldi has been a little quiet on social media this year, after announcing he would take a break to focus on his next album. His return to our phone screens came off the back of the release of his new single Forget Me, which was released on September 9. His upcoming second album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, is set to be released on May 19, 2023. While we’ll have to wait a while to hear all the new tracks, we’re still excited to belt out some classic Capaldi songs at Coca-Cola Arena on November 28.
Tickets start from Dhs199 for bronze, Dhs279 for silver and Dhs399 for gold or golden circle. coca-cola-arena.com
“AT AGE 13 HE AUDITIONED FOR BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT, WHICH HE WAS REJECTED FROM BEFORE REACHING THE TV ROUNDS.”
Over the past two years, the work of artist and sculptor Idriss B has become synonymous with Dubai’s cityscape. Parisianborn, Dubai-based Idriss B is renowned for his eccentric
style, impressive collaborations, and vibrant polygonal animalshaped structures.
When you think of the artist, maybe it’s the flying gorilla being helicoptered through Dubai Marina that first springs to mind, or the turtles of Jumeirah Al Naseem, or the extraordinary falcon overlooking Atlantis, The Palm.
Idriss B has shown an interest in art since childhood, working as a visual merchandiser for luxury brands, including Dior, Moncler, and Louis Vuitton for over a decade. But it wasn’t until moving to Dubai that he was inspired to create his own sculptures, launching The Art Collection in 2015, with the gorilla, Mojo.
“It is the daily life that inspires me the most: the mix between cultures, the technology, and the nature that is all over Dubai, between the sea on the Palm, the desert, and the mountains, it is truly this mix of everything and that is what makes it so special and interesting to me,” he told What’s On. The UAE Golden Visaawarded artist aims to evoke different emotions and feelings with each animal sculpture, hoping the public relate and recognise parts of themselves in each piece.
Idriss B talks us through his creative practice which starts with extensive research to accurately reflect the character of the animal, including facial expression, stance, size, and colour. Then, a sketch followed by 3D printing and from there he will make a clay mould. Depending on the size of the project, this process usually takes around five months.
Those interested in buying a sculpture for themselves can create a custom piece on Idriss B’s website. Collectors can expect to pay between Dhs100k and Dhs150k for a metre-high bear named Baloo, or Dhs50k to Dhs70k for a tabletop version of a crocodile called Dundee. Previous high-profile clients of the contemporary artist include Lindsay Lohan, Akon, Snoop Dogg, and Ja Rule.
Dubai’s booming art scene has been a great platform for Idriss B who has continued to gain popularity around the globe with an exhibition in New York featuring his most recent project, a t-rex, showcased on Park Avenue. What’s next? Idriss B teased upcoming collaborations we must look forward to, including a project with NusrEt (otherwise known as Salt Bae), a luxury yacht company, and a jewellery brand.

We’re not the first boat out on the waters of JBR, but almost. It’s 8am and we’ve joined the Dragon Fire Dragon Boat Club for its Friday morning practice ahead of a big competition at Dubai Creek on the weekend.
Melissa O’Brien is today’s boat leader, and the club’s coach. After 13 years of dragon boating, she’s still excited to be on the water. Now, as we leave the Sheraton shore in our rear view, her voice cuts through the morning air as she shouts out instructions.
“Throw that outside shoulder forward now!” she urges, sounding like your favourite youth sports coach. “Throw it forward, snap it forward and hold!”
Tourists wave at us from shore as we make our way out towards the blue. We stop from time to time, yielding to wakeboard boats or to take quick water breaks while soaking up more wisdom from O’Brien.
Seated directly in front of us, Dragon Fire members Bethan Bencini and Casie KeynesPhilip chat between paddling. They’re just two of the new club draftees who, after
spotting a recruitment drive on Dragon Fire’s Instagram page run by co-founding member Erika Clements, were inspired to try out based on the team’s palpable camaraderie and inspiring fitness regime.
“Beginners always have the opportunity to come and try out a few sessions before deciding if this sport is a good fit for them,” says Clements. “They get a chance to check us out, but we also have to check them out as they need to start with a good base fitness level.”
The club, which has been running since 2016, trains on the water and in the
gym three days a week, but often up it to four if they’re preparing for big, often international, competitions. Competing is something the team takes very seriously. “The dragon boat community is very competitive, but it’s healthy. We all cheer each other on and have a great respect for other teams,” Clements adds.
For newbies, there’s a bit of lingo to learn on a dragon boat. For instance, ‘heads in the boat’ means get ready to paddle. ‘Let it run’ means stop paddling and let the boat’s momentum carry you forward.
But it’s more than competition that binds the ladies. Many of the club’s members have been paddling for over 10 years together. “Dragon Fire is a family,” Clements beams. “We’ve seen each other cry, laugh, sweat, and sometimes even being sick. We lift each other up to make us feel strong and powerful. Most of us are employed. Most of us are married. And most of us have children, but this time on the boat is all about us. Us as strong female individuals and us as a strong female team that empowers each other.”
As we cruise past Ain Dubai headed back for shore, talk turns to the upcoming competition. As we listen on, we can’t help but hope that there’s room for one more onboard this season.

A luxe escape in the heart of Downtown Dubai
Find yourself in the heart of the action at The Dubai Edition, located a stone’s throw from Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall. The city hotel is tucked just off the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, surrounded by a huge number of retailers, restaurants, and attractions.
Design is at the absolute core of this property, with warm beige tones used throughout. From the open plan stonewalled lobby and its elegant fusilli-shaped staircase to the vast windows and arched ceilings, the space feels chic and inviting. Much attention has been paid to the details, achieving a well-considered minimalist finish.
We stayed in a Deluxe Room, while other options include a Superior or Deluxe Suite. The size is just right for a couple, and comes with a king bed, a small armchair next to a marble table, and a balcony that looks out to Burj Khalifa. The bed and bath are separated by only a curtain, but the shower is so wonderful that we’d choose it over the former any day. The bed passes the ‘cloud’ test with flying colours, as we’re blessed with one of the best night’s sleeps we’ve had in a long while.
Thia Skylounge is the hotel’s pool and bar. Located on the 2nd floor, it offers prime Burj Khalifa views as guests enjoy a day lounging on a cabana or sipping a cocktail on the terrace. The space is cosy and feels exclusive, with lush foliage climbing the walls.
The Dubai Edition is steadily increasing its restaurant portfolio, making solid choices as it does. The strongest concept so far is Peruvian rooftop restaurant, Inti, which boasts a terrace with a retractable roof, overlooking Burj Khalifa. The food and service and as brilliant as the views, and as the night goes on, the vibe continues to build thanks to the resident DJ. For a more subdued evening, head to Duomo, the chic Italian restaurant at the back of the hotel lobby. Here, food reigns supreme and guests can make their way through plates of crudi, pizza, pasta and more meaty mains. Duomo is also the spot for guests to enjoy breakfast. As the large arched window floods the room with morning light, a la carte dishes are served alongside barista-made coffee and fresh juices.
The Dubai Edition is currently running a special offer, where guests can enjoy a Deluxe Room with breakfast and late check out included, plus a cocktail at Thia and Dhs200 credit to use at the spa. Prices start from Dhs1,599 per night, plus taxes.
