Bringing its What’s On Award-winning dinner and a show concept back to Dubai, Billionaire will showcase its family of skilful artists, musicians, acrobats, and dancers. Curated by Billionaire’s Creative Director Montse Morè, guests will enjoy a three-hour experience complemented by a premium menu. Chef Batuhan Piatti Zeynioglu has prepared a menu of signature Italian and contemporary new-Asian dishes.
The team works for months ahead of opening night to come up with the show, resulting in something fresh and new and ever-changing –no two weeks at Billionaire are ever the same. Following the dinner and a show experience, Billionaire effortlessly transforms into a fullscale state of the art nightclub.
Known for its electric atmosphere and highend dining, Billionaire has made a name for
itself in Dubai’s ever-growing dinner and a show space. Guests can expect a memorable evening filled with high-energy moments both on-stage and off. Get ready for some intense napkin-swinging.
Doors open from 9pm, while the evening’s entertainment will begin at 9.30pm each night of opening. Following the show, a resident DJ will crank up the atmosphere with a party playlist that will have you up on your feet in no time.
Michael and Dario are two brothers that descend from one of the oldest Italian circus dynasties: the Togni family. Their act, Icarian Games, is a traditional yet very rare circus acrobatic discipline and takes its name from the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus as it expressed the human desire to fly. The performance is traditionally played by father and son, as the flyer is usually not heavier than a kid, however the brothers seek to challenge this as 85kg Dario impressively flips through the air.
Maria Hinojosa lives to be on stage. Having started rhythmic gymnastics at a young age, she went on to study ballroom dancing and compete in international competitions. Not only does she light up the stage every evening, but she also brings her creativity to the creation of the show, helping to coordinate and choreograph, as well as perform. Her powerful presence on the stage adds to the dramatically orchestrated show and helps to create an unforgettable experience for guests. Keep an eye out for her mesmerising flour performance.
Jacques is an actor, singer, dancer and master of ceremony, with an extensive background of incredible jobs on his CV. He started his musical career with Singin’ in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, Young Frankestein, Disco la comédie musicale, as well as Spamalot the Musical and Chicago the Musical. He worked as Master of ceremony with Les Zigotos, plus two seasons at Lio Ibiza and Lio Costa Smeralda Italy, and the Park Chinois London, among others.
Britain’s Got Talent participants ‘Dust in the Wind’ are set to wow audiences at Billionaire with their unique circus act ‘Adagio’. Originating from Cuba, the incredible duo Julio and Maite have a history of performing on stage across the globe.
Spanish singer and actress, Sonia Egea, joined the Billionaire family in 2021, bringing her unique sound to the stage. Previously she was a lead singer and actress in musical theatre, which lead her to join the cast of The Bodyguard in 2019 and touring with the musical in Spain.

Her fail-safe formula for throwing a great party is a lesson I’ve valued my whole adult life. She’s expertly trained in working a room, never lets a glass slip below half full, and gets everyone on their feet with Toploader’s Dancing in the Moonlight. I’ve been thinking about this a lot as Dubai’s hospitality scene comes alive again after the summer lull, each venue back in action and ready to showcase its own version of the perfect recipe for a successful soiree.
But it’s not just old favourites coming back to life as we welcome the return of the winter months. With the changing seasons comes a slew of new venues, each one preparing to present its amalgam of gourmet cuisine, master mixology and dazzling entertainment. From p18, we’re giving them a warm welcome. Some you can already visit, but for others, you’ll have to wait a few more weeks. However, all promise to delight and excite whether your dream day out is a long, lazy lunch reminiscent of hazy afternoons on the Italian Riviera, or you plan the perfect date night around restaurant-hopping between DIFC’s sleekest new additions.
As well as keeping you well-fed, we’ve got a treat for the eyes and ears, as we bring you all the concerts and shows Dubai has to offer between now and the end of 2022. Whether you’re into R&B, rock, or retro Abba tunes, you won’t be disappointed. There are also incredible sporting events and experiences happening around town that we’re sure you won’t want to miss. They range from the city-wide Dubai Fitness Challenge, to a water-based circus show and a mindblowing Dhs5,000-per-seat dining experience.
There really is no excuse to stay in.

UAE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…
Who are you, and what made you famous?
I am Massimo Vidoni aka ‘The Truffleman’. My truffles made me famous. I sell caviar and truffles to all the top restaurants in the UAE. Chef Reif Othman gave me the name when we met in Zuma 10 years ago. I decided to make an Instagram account called @trufflemandubai and everything grew from there.
How long have you been in the UAE?
I’ve been here for more than 10 years now. My wife was offered a job for an ad agency, and I was bored of Italy, so we packed two suitcases and moved here to start a new chapter. We’d heard a
lot about Dubai and felt like it’s a place where dreams can come true. It’s open for everybody and it’s easy to start a business here.
What does a typical day at work look like for you? Instagram is my forte. I have more than 250k followers and that’s how I do business, so the first thing I do is check in with everyone on there. Next, I run to the office and check any new shipments. I’ll also see that all the day’s orders go out to the restaurants smoothly. In the afternoon, I do tastings with different chefs in my office, which is my favourite part of the day. I also like to go out two or three times a week to visit
my clients and support their restaurants.
What’s your favourite thing about your job? Everything from tasting the meals that the chefs make with my products, to seeing their reaction when we open a big caviar tin. It is not only about selling. Yes, of course
I am here to sell but the people I meet are all artists, all special. Chefs are super interesting to me, we have the same passion and love for food, and we are intransigent about quality standards.
What’s the most expensive truffle you ever sold?
In November 2018 I sold a giant white truffle, which weighed 1.006kg to Roberto’s in DIFC. It was the most expensive truffle ever sold in the UAE. It was a Tuber Magnatum Pico truffle – one of the rarest types in the world and has an approximate value of Dhs187,000.
What’s the most random dish you’ve added truffle to? I add truffles to almost everything, but the most random dish is grilled cheese. Truffles are usually shaved extremely thinly over a variety of dishes, like pasta, pizza, risotto or eggs.
What’s been your biggest achievement so far? To come to the UAE without knowing anyone, and in just 10 years to be known in the industry and to see my face on TV shows such as BBC’s Inside Dubai makes me super happy. But the biggest achievement for me is to see my truffles on the menus of the most iconic restaurants, and being invited to eat there is fantastic, especially as, until recently, I couldn’t even afford to eat in these venues.
Do you think that Dubai will be your forever home? Yes, I am very happy here. We bought our own home, and with the recent Golden Visa programme, I can now see Dubai as a place where I can retire as well. It’s a forever home at least from October to June each year.

There’s no shortage of haute hangouts with international roots in DIFC, but the latest to join their ranks is LA’s celebrity hotspot, The Nice Guy. Mirroring the original in America, kitsch and eclectic décor dominates the aesthetic inside, while out on the terrace guests can dine under the twinkling DIFC lights. The Kardashians and Justin Bieber are among the starry names to have been spotted at The Nice Guy in LA, so we can’t wait to see who sashays through its doors in Dubai.

An institution on Paris’ after-hours clubbing scene, Raspoutine is the hottest ticket in DIFC right now. Those that manage to snag a reservation are in for a visual treat with soft furnishings designed in endless shades of crimson, decadent chandeliers and a grand DJ booth at the entrance. Expect to dine on decadent dishes such as spaghetti and caviar or wagyu beef pirojkis before dusting off your dancing shoes for an evening of late-night revelry.

After his sold-out concert in 2019, British singer and songwriter George Ezra is returning to Dubai, acoustic guitar in hand, to perform at the Coca-Cola Arena later this month. George Ezra has been blessing us with his instantly recognisable, soothing vocals since 2014, with chart-topping hits that you’ll never tire of hearing, including Shotgun, Budapest, and Paradise.
Growing up, George Ezra was inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley, and his upbeat, sunny songs have won over fans across the whole world and of all age groups.
Before his rise to fame, Ezra studied at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) in Bristol in 2011 in the hopes of becoming a music teacher. However, less than a year later, at the age of 18, he signed with Colombia Records. His remarkable success at such a young age may have something to do with his unique bluesy voice, or perhaps his knack for song writing, or his extremely humble character.
His first album Wanted on Voyage reached number three in the UK charts, featuring singles such as Blame it On Me, Budapest, and Cassy O. In 2018, his second album Staying at Tamara’s was released along with hit singles Paradise and Shotgun. The following year, Ezra took home the 2019 BRIT award for British Male Solo Artist.
In 2021, before the release of his third album, Ezra and two of his best friends embarked on a three-month adventure
walking from the southernmost part of England, Land’s End, to the very north of Scotland, John O’Groats. The journey was filmed and released as a documentary called End to End, including tracks from his latest album, Gold Rush Kid. Ezra described the journey as a life changing experience that changed his perception on the world.
He’s currently on tour for Gold Rush Kid, which became his third consecutive number one album in the UK and features summery tunes such as Green Green Grass, Anyone for You (Tiger Lily) and Manila This will mark his second performance in the UAE, after performing in Dubai for the first time at a sell-out concert at World Trade Centre back in 2019. We can’t wait to sing along with the soulful singer belting out his feel-good songs at the Coca-Cola Arena later this month.
George Ezra live at Coca-Cola Arena, City Walk, Friday October 21, doors open 6pm 16 years and over. Tickets are priced at Dhs225 (silver), Dhs295 (gold), and Dhs395 (golden circle). coca-cola-arena.com
1 George Ezra’s album Staying at Tamara’s was named after his Airbnb host Tamara in Barcelona.
2 Music runs in the family as George Ezra’s younger brother, Ethan Barnett, is also a singersongwriter who goes by the name of Ten Tonnes.
3 George Ezra released a podcast series called George and Friends where he chats with fellow musicians such as Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Lily Allen and more about the highs and lows of the industry.

Much anticipation was built in the lead up to the opening of Chic Nonna. It was 18 months in the making, and when it finally announced its opening, we couldn’t wait to go and see the final result. The restaurant is the second from Mine & Yours Group, following the successful launch of L’Amo Bistro Del Mare in Dubai Harbour. But where the menu at L’Amo leans toward seafood, Chic Nonna offers more traditional Italian cuisine – but before we get to the food, we need to discuss the venue. A standalone three-story structure in DIFC, guests are greeted by enormous green doors, an original Parisian-style sign, doorbell, and large windows that provide a sneak peek of the luxe welcome area. Inside, the grand entrance has a cosy fireplace in the waiting area and a wellstocked wine cellar that cascades around the winding staircase. We feel at home already. In the dining hall, a large open kitchen offers a prime view of the action, while upstairs, a trendy cocktail bar and cigar lounge makes us feel like we’ve been invited to an exclusive penthouse party.
We begin on the ground floor, and the restaurant is busy. It’s a Thursday night and the room is alive with groups of
friends catching up, while couples sample fine wines and order large sharing plates. Service is swift and seamless, with waiters dancing through the tables topping up glasses and recommending dishes.
Following a phenomenal focaccia from the breadbasket, we begin with Fassona beef carpaccio (Dhs105). Served on a square plate, the beautifully presented dish is paired with ribbons of celery and fresh truffle shavings. While the flavours blend well, we can’t resist the crunchy and soft texture combinations, and swiftly polish off the plate. Burrata (Dhs70) is also a solid choice to prepare the palette for an evening of quality Italian ingredients.
Moving onto the pizza course, we aim to mix things up by choosing the traditional focaccia di recco (Dhs85). Unlike the one from the breadbasket, this focaccia is thin and cracker-like, topped with melted cheese and yet more black truffle. A little black around the edges, but the flavour made up for it, particularly when drizzled with top quality olive oil.
After much deliberation, we ended up choosing two pasta dishes. The first, crespelle fiorentine (Dhs90)
was a definite hit. Creamy ricotta cheese, layered with wilted spinach and swimming in homemade tomato sauce and melted cheese – what’s not to love? The other pasta though, we probably wouldn’t order again. Cavatelli dello chef (Dhs210) drew us in with the promise of cacio & pepe, but was paired with red shrimp and baby squid. An unusual pairing, sure, but the let-down was the pasta itself; tight shells cooked a little too al dente for our liking made the texture of the dish difficult to enjoy.
For those who can’t resist an Italian dessert, don’t miss the tiramisu (Dhs65), although you might want to order it to the top floor to carry on your night. As the meal comes to a close, many of the guests take the glass-walled elevator up for a digestif (us included). Here, a DJ sets the vibe through an up-tempo soundtrack while a vibrant crowd sip on cocktails and enjoy views of Burj Khalifa through the floor to ceiling windows.
Chic Nonna, Bank Street Building, DIFC, daily 7pm to 3am. Tel: (0)4 605 2000. chicnonna.com
Everything is taken care of at Chic Nonna’s house. Make yourself at home and prepare for a wonderful evening.
Words: Elise KerrIs Dubai ready for this grown-up fusion restaurant?
In Jun’s, Chef Kelvin presents a love letter to his memories of food that begin in childhood and evolve through his culinary career that’s taken him around the world. It is self-described as progressive, modern and approachable fine dining. We’re suitably intrigued.
Showcased against the backdrop of a sleek restaurant space on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Jun’s pairs its fusion menu of North American and Asian flavours with an array of cocktails, wines and spirits.
The aesthetic has the feel of a stylish brasserie, with a marble floor in rich teal, burnt orange and black leather chairs and copper accents. It might feel very masculine if it wasn’t for the ornate feathers in shades of coffee, taupe and cream that add a feminine touch to the bar, the kitchen counter, DJ booth and walls wherever the designers have found an inch of space.
Among the star starters, we’re surprised by how much we enjoy the flavour-packed rainbow heirloom carrots (Dhs60), simply seasoned with a soy honey butter and presented on a bed of creamy smoked labneh. Another table-pleasing small plate is the scallop and corn (Dhs70), Chef Kelvin’s twist on scallop sushi with slivers of Hokkaido scallop neatly topping discs of warm crispy rice, in turn plated onto a corn puree.
The Norwegian salmon tartare (Dhs80) is a colourful combination of punchy agua de chile, charred avocado and diced raw salmon that we pile onto crisp nori crackers, and we much prefer it to the slightly-too-rich Wagyu beef tartare with Szechuan bone marrow (Dhs115), which misses the mark.
Loosening our belts, we move to mains and opt to try the brilliant Macanese lobster (Dhs175), which arrives as chunks of Atlantic lobster in a thick madras curry sauce, mixed in with mushroom, coconut and parmesan and perfectly pairs with piping hot steamed buns. The miso glazed Chilean sea bass (Dhs175) is tasty, but not the best version we’ve ever eaten in Dubai.
For dessert, we can’t miss trying the boba creme brulee, and the addition of coconut tapioca boba is a novel and welcome twist to a classic sweet.
The nostalgic narrative that comes with each dish Chef Kelvin presents gives Jun’s an intimacy that is rarely offered in Dubai, but in a restaurant of this size, it’s not going to be easy to replicate that experience with every guest. While the handpicked team are knowledgeable on the story of each dish, it’s never quite the same as hearing it straight from Chef Kelvin.
Jun’s, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown Dubai, 5.30pm to 2am daily. Tel: (0)4 457 603., junsdubai.com
An audience with Chef Kelvin is not one to be missed.
EAT Words: Alice HolthamIt’s perhaps a testament to Mina’s Kitchen that – despite this Sunday brunch being the first of its kind – we know just from hearing the word ‘Bubbalicious’, that it’s something worth experiencing. Bubbalicious has become a household name in Dubai with a reputation of being one of the most fun and indulgent brunches in town. But perhaps the reason we’re drawn to such places – beyond the food or the popularity – is because of the memories that they evoke.
We arrive at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Resort with high expectations and empty stomachs for the inaugural seating of The Roast by Bubbalicious. Right from the entrance of the hotel, we are in awe. There’s a welcome drink on arrival and then it hits us: the nostalgiac smell of a roast dinner transports us back to our childhood. We are so busy admiring our perfectly decorated table that we don’t realise how quickly the restaurant is filling up around us. There isn’t an empty table
in sight. Or an empty champagne flute.
The ambience?
Authentic and buzzing. The crowd? A good mix of groups and families.
We make several rounds of the buffet just taking it all in before committing to picking up a plate. For starters, the chef had prepared delicious cuts of smoked salmon and smoked tuna. We pile up a plate of nibbles so we can try a little bit of everything, including prawn cocktail, oysters, scotch eggs, fresh bread, hummus, and cheese – oh the cheese...
Next up: the roast. Although, there are plenty of other options available, including a British ‘balti’ and fish & chips, it’s Sunday and what is a Sunday without a roast?
Lamb, chicken, beef, or cauliflower steak are carved to order, served with all the trimmings. The roast potatoes are cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside; the cauliflower leek cheese was a particular highlight, and tasted even better drenched with red wine gravy; the Yorkshire puddings were huge and a little overdone; but there was a great selection of veg, from roasted carrots to red cabbage (which went superbly with the lamb and mint sauce).
As well as a feel-good live music duo, there’s plenty here to keep children entertained throughout the afternoon. The kid’s corner features a clown that makes balloons, a slime corner, an arts and crafts table and face-painting. The kids even had their own little treats corner with chocolate fondue and a popcorn machine. Not to mention the children’s entertainer and magician that made his way round the restaurant to perform his lively juggling show.
The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Sundays, 1pm to 4pm, Dhs350 soft, Dhs450 house, Dhs595 free-flowing bubbly, Dhs200 kids aged 6 to 12, free for age 5 and under.

Words: Tamara WrightMuch attention has been paid to the design of The Birdcage, from the glittering chandeliers to the vibrant purple and pink neon bar, which features chic gothic elements.
Found on the third floor at the Pullman Downtown Hotel, we choose a seat by the window to enjoy the views of Dubai. Inside is just as eye-catching though, with neon lighting, holograms of birds, as well as a digital display behind the DJ and bar. The vibe here is different – inviting, relaxing and freeing. We’re told that the mood starts off relaxing but post-10pm, it’s ‘party time’. And the DJ gets it just right, skillfully matching the atmosphere with his music as the night progresses.
We turn our eyes to the cocktail menu, which takes us on a journey with Jonathan Gold (a fictitious character), and his adventurous life in drinks. We opt for a
Ronin and Negroni (Dhs85), a pleasantly balanced cocktail, which is both sweet and bitter, but the highlight was the kaffir leaf, which added zest to each sip. The Rob Roy (Dhs90) also arrives along with smoky theatrics, and manages to balance sweet and bitter without being overly strong.
We pour over a menu of Asian and Latin American dishes. For cold nibbles, the coco ceviche (Dhs75) caught our attention. The classic combo of mango and coconut cream complements the sea bass nicely, but the winning note, comes (yet again) from the kaffir leaf. The wagyu tatami (Dhs90) has thinly sliced seared wagyu rib cap swimming in a mixture of lime oil, garlic and seasonal black truffle. It’s salty with hints of lime and we polish off the dish in minutes.
Switching to hot dishes, the grilled octopus called ‘ten-tickles’ (Dhs75) comes with a delicious mashed potato, chilli caramel and chorizo. We found it lacking in the spice department but overall, the dish pairing works. We also opt for the fire-roasted black tiger prawns (Dhs85),
which come on a bed of coriander, parsley and lemon sauce. The addition of orange segments brings all the elements together surprisingly well.
For our main, it’s the hamachi color (Dhs120), served with a delicious laksa sauce. If you’re a fan of flavours of the sea, you’ll love this dish, but we personally preferred it when dunked in the coconut-based sauce.
On to dessert, we pick the burnt cheesecake (Dhs75) made with ube (a purple yam from the Philippines). The purple-hued cheesecake was light and flavourful, and the burnt topping helped to balance out the sweetness. We also pick the muscovado sorbet (Dhs75) – a light vegan ice cream with an oat-based crunch that comes to the table in a hollowed-out coconut shell – a light cool treat to end the night.
With winter just around the corner, we’re told that the outdoor terrace is opening soon.

Written by his daughter, HH Sheikha Latifa bint Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this book allows readers a glimpse into the private life of the late Sheikh Hamdan.
For the first time in nine years, The Script is returning to Dubai
It turns out the man can be moved. The Script’s lead singer Danny O’Donoghue, plus guitarist Mark Sheehan and drummer Glen Power are bringing their 2022 world tour to Dubai this month. Between legs in Asia and Europe, the three-piece band will bring their greatest hits to The Tent at Bla Bla on Wednesday October 5.
It’s set to be a more intimate gig than the super-sized arenas the Irish rockers are used to selling out, but this limited capacity event will allow fans to enjoy an up-close and personal sing-along to some of The Script’s biggest songs from the last 14 years.
While we’ve been belting out hits such as The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, We Cry and Before the Worst since their debut album release in 2008, The Script’s story begins years before that. Danny O’Donoghue and Mark Sheehan have been friends since high school, where they met growing up in Dublin. Back in 1996, the gents formed half of the four-piece band, Mytown, travelling to the US and Canada where they landed a record deal. But after moderately successful first and second singles, the band’s label dropped them before they could release their debut album. O’Donoghue and Sheehan returned to Dublin and in the early noughties they
recruited Glen Power as their drummer, and The Script was born.
Second time around they were much more successful, with their debut single We Cry April 2008 and landing the trio their first top 20 hit in the UK Singles Chart. Their eclectic sound won them an instant legion of fans, and further success followed with the release of their self-titled number one album in August 2008 swiftly followed by
their second single, The Man Who Can’t Be Moved that September, which gave the band their first top 10 hit.
In the years that have followed, the band have released a further five studio albums with all bar one topping the UK album charts. Their first number one came four years after the release of the band’s first single, with Hall of Fame in August 2012, followed up by karaoke favourites, including If You Could See Me Now and Superheroes
While it might be easy for the band to rest on their laurels, comfortably touring with their catalogue of greatest hits, the trio continue to write the script on their musical journey. They released their latest Dare You to Doubt Me last month after performing it on their world tour.

Just because the summer has been and gone, it doesn’t mean our cinema-going expectations should go into hibernation. We’ve been rummaging around in the box office ‘coming soon’ file cabinet and can assure you, there’s still a slew of solid gold, silver screen action headed to your nearest multiplex over the coming months.
Expected: October 20
It was only ever going to be a matter of time before Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, pulled on the spandex and entered into one comic franchise or another. He’s gone with DC, which is an interesting choice (although it seems no longer an eternally binding one) given their inconsistent record, but he’s always been
the sort to side with a scrappy underdog. Johnson, plays the titular anti-hero, a superbeing released into the modern world after five thousand years of imprisonment. That kind of stretch in solitary does things to a man, and rather than going the ‘full tub of Ben and Jerry’s’ route to grief resolution, he takes it out on those in close proximity. Despite this classic bully behaviour, a Justice collective spot potential in Adam, ‘maybe we can change him’ they scribble into their diary. And change him they must, because an enemy even more powerful than Black Adam can smell exactly what they are cooking.
Expected: October 21
Films from the playwright, screenwriter, producer, and director, Martin McDonagh don’t come around that often, but when they do — they usually end up being regarded as cult classics. Even from the little we know about The Banshees of Inisherin, it feels like we’re going to be getting another theatrical McDonagh classic. It stars long-time collaborators Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson and covers the fallout of a rift between two best friends.
Expected: November 11
The world is a far poorer place for the loss of Chadwick Boseman. A fact honoured by the decision of the Marvel boardroom that Boseman’s character in the original Black Panther movie, T’Challa would not be recast. But ending the dynasty that Chadwick helped create right there also seemed unfair. And so we face a Black Panther sequel without T’Challa, another hero must don the feline scratch mitts and guard the many secrets of Wakanda. Let’s just say Disney’s Multiverse cheat code hack has essentially made anything possible. Little is known about the plot, other than King T’Challa’s passing has left a contested power vacuum, with enemies queueing up to take advantage of the distraction. We can only hope they do our Chadwick proud, *slaps chest* Wakanda Forever.
Expected: November 21
Angry chef movies have been enjoying a bit of a comeback recently, and that suits us just fine.
Professional kitchens are a hotbed of dueling egos, sociopathic screaming fits and, with the increasingly farcical fashions in food, an air ripe for parody *snorts in disgust at the suggestion of pesto flavoured popcorn*. The Menu stars Anya TaylorJoy, Nicholas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes. It’s being described as black horror comedy, and the story follows Taylor-Joy and Hoult as a couple that head to a super exclusive restaurant, helmed by Fiennes — for a very special sort of molecular gastronomy tasting menu. Treading the line between degustation and just plain disgusting, not all of the chef’s courses are going to make the Instagram feed.
Expected: December 9
The Brenaissance has begun. Once a blockbuster regular, Brendan Fraser has been all but absent from our screens for a considerable chunk of time. He plays the lead in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, a film that received a six minute standing ovation after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Fraser was moved to tears. The early reactions on his performance as Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher desperately trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter, seem to suggest the Brenaissance might well be boosted further by an upcoming Oscar nomination.
Expected: December 15
This long-awaited sequel sees a lot of the surviving cast members returning, along with the addition of new talent such as Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Michelle Yeoh and Vin Diesel. Events are set a decade on from the first movie, and follow the trials and tribulations of the Sully family, and water presumably. Should we expect a critique of private corperations commercialising a basic human necessity? Maybe. Or maybe James Cameron just really loves water.
Expected: December 23
The original Knives Out, a Christie-esque ‘whodunnit?’ starring Daniel Craig as the sole investigator of a fiendish murder, was one of the surprise hits of 2019. Ok, with the pandemic it was a quiet year for the film industry – but it really was a banger. The sequel sees Craig reprise his role as Detective Benoit Blanc, as he’s brought in to solve, yep, another grizzly murder, this time on the private island of a tech billionaire. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Edward Norton (as the billionaire), Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista and Ethan Hawke. And we don’t know but if we had to guess – it was the butler, in the library, with the glass onion.
Back in March, the curtains closed on the world’s greatest show. Across six months, 192 countries proudly showcased their ideas and aspirations, megastars entertained the masses at Al Wasl Plaza and more than 200 restaurants fed the 24 million who made their way through the grand Expo 2020 gates. But this October, we’ll get to say hello to the world’s greatest show 2.0, as the site is transformed into Expo City Dubai. Here’s your essential guide.
Two of the three thematic pavilions: Alif, the Mobility Pavilion; and Terra, the Sustainability Pavilion have returned in their original form. If you didn’t visit Alif first time around, prepare to be transported through time where you’ll get to see how mobility has shaped human history. At Terra, visitors can expect a showcase of best practices in sustainability, journeying to swirling oceans and verdant forests on an interactive discovery that will leave you reconsidering your approach to the planet. Tickets are Dhs50 per pavilion.
Words: Alice HolthamWhile visitors are welcome to stroll the site at leisure, you can get in a workout by hiring eBikes and eScooters or give weary legs a rest and hop on buggies or the Expo Explorer train.
For fans of a vantage point with fabulous views, no trip to Expo City will be complete without a spin around Garden in the Sky, a rotating observation deck that lifts visitors 55 metres above ground. Elsewhere, making a welcome return to Instagram feeds will be Expo favourite, Surreal. This gravity-defying water feature puts on dazzling displays of expertly choreographed music, water and fire. Then there’s Al Wasl Plaza, Expo’s beating heart and jaw-dropping events space, where star-studded performances from Coldplay, Ellie Goulding and Christina Aguilera wowed guests first time around. Not to forget the next generation, younger visitors to Expo City can enjoy hours of fun at the outdoor playground and carousel.
One of the three key Expo 2020 themes was opportunity, which saw the creation of the opportunity district and the focal Opportunity Pavilion. Later this year, the Opportunity Pavilion will reopen as an interactive museum. Inside, visitors can relieve the impressive feats and unforgettable highlights from the six action-packed months of Expo 2020 Dubai. But journeying further back in time, the museum will also offer visitors the opportunity to discover more about the incredible history and lasting impact of previous world expos.
Can’t squeeze everything into one day? Then check-in to the only hotel at Expo City, Rove Expo 2020. After a day exploring the mini-city, make a splash in the pool, where an afternoon dip comes with glorious views over Al Wasl Dome. rovehotels.com
Let’s face it: You don’t always treat your body like a temple. And that’s OK. Those buffet brunches aren’t going to eat themselves. But it’s always good to have a balance. That’s where the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) comes in. Taking place from October 29 to November 27, this annual month-long fitness challenge, launched in 2017 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, invites everyone in the city to complete 30 minutes of activity every day, for 30 days. With an action-packed calendar of free classes, sporting events, group workout sessions and healthy eating tutorials via its website, the DFC aims to help get you moving every single day. Live events will also take place at specially designed ‘fitness villages’ across the city, including a primary complex at Kite Beach. Plus, look out for news incoming on this year’s dates for the famous Dubai Ride and Dubai Run challenges, which takes participants on a mega loop along Sheikh Zayed Road.

Tickets for Coachella sell out in an instant. Flights into London before the Wilderness Festival are prohibitive and forget about Airbnbs or hotels. No problem – you can still find parties on this planet that your friends haven’t already selfied to exhaustion. And with the arrival of Raktopia – taking place this month in Ras Al Khaimah – there’s now no need to look further afield.
Raktopia is your chill, outdoorsy alternative to urban celebrations, desert raves, and spiritual carnivals. The emirate’s latest festival features music, yoga, meditation and more, set in the pretty confines of the What’s On Awardwinning Longbeach Campground where selfcare seekers, beach lovers and festivalgoers will enjoy a weekend getaway with relaxed vibes, interactive activities and captivating beats.
Allaoua Gaham, an experienced yogi and certified senior instructor of Animal Flow, introduces a yoga-meets-breakdancing workout to help students gain more body awareness, and Systema, a form of martial arts that focuses on physical, mental and spiritual wellness. Meanwhile, Dubaibased yogi Sarah White offers guided meditations, holistic health coach Tamara Khoury leads cardio Pilates by the beach and Charl Chaka, a renowned creative facilitator in music and movement dance, will host a series of jamming sessions.
During the day, expect a line-up of talented local DJs spinning a carefully curated selection of chilled out beats,
followed by a host of internationally renowned DJs, including EDM favourite NU, Argentinian DJ LUM and regional stars 2Third taking festival-goers on a spiritual journey through the world of electronic music.
Complementing the day programme is a series of interactive ceramic and mandala workshops led by UAE-based artists who will also co-create special art projects to showcase the unique character and landscape of Ras Al Khaimah.
After you’ve camped under the stars, backstroked in the ocean, and gorged mindfully on good food, you may start to ask yourself what all the fuss about Coachella was.

For many, Tbilisi is synonymous with Georgia – it is the capital of the country, after all. But a mere 220 kilometres west of this popular city, lies Kutaisi – one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world – just waiting to be discovered
Located a three-and-a-half-hour flight away from the UAE, Georgia has seen a surge of tourists over the past decade. While most tourists make a beeline for Tbilisi, Kutaisi is a city worth seeking out.
As with many cities, the centre is one that needs exploring and here in Kutaisi, all you need is half a day (or a few hours if you’re short on time). Begin at the ornamental Colchis Fountain in Tsentraluri Moedani Square. Found in the heart of the city, the multi-level fountain is adorned with replicas of the ancient gold jewellery discovered at the nearby archaeological site of Vani. The fountain is illuminated every evening, so pay a visit during your post-dinner stroll to really see it come to life.
For culture vultures, head to the Meskhishvili Theatre – one of the oldest theatres in Georgia. It was built in 1861 and is named after one of Georgia’s best-known theatrical figures. The huge stage can host up to 830 spectators. Next, head over to Kutaisi Park (also called Park of Love) to escape the noise and check out some sculptures and monuments, as well as a view Kutaisi City Hall. Close by is White Bridge, which crosses over River Roni. Kutaisi is a city of bridges, and this particular footbridge is said to be one of the
most beautiful. Through the glass floor, sneak a peek at some of Rioni River’s white stones, before soaking in the old city views on either side and snap a souvenir photo with the Picasso Boy sculpture.
Make your way back to Colchis Fountain and spend time exploring the many cafés and restaurants in the surrounding area. Get some shopping done at Kutaisi Central Market (Green Bazaar) where you can pick up local treats to take home with you, including churchkhela – Georgia’s traditional candy. You can wile away hours just weaving through the lanes, checking out the street art and local shops. As for souvenirs, there are plenty in the area; have a look around before making your final decision to see where you’re getting your Georgian Lari worth of goodies.
Located in the Imereti region on Ukimerioni Hill, one of the oldest temples in Georgia stands out with its striking, teal-roofed domes. Bagrati Cathedral was built in 1003 and has sadly seen trying times from fires, battles and more over the centuries. Inside the cathedral, you’ll find beautiful frescos but head outside to the South Gate and you will see the original murals dating back to the 11th century. The cathedral was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994 but after major restorations that included the addition of modern elements such as steel and glass, the status was removed. Nonetheless, it is a must-visit for tourists and has one of the best panoramic views of the city.
The village of Kumistavi is home to the beautiful Prometheus Caves – one of the largest underground cave systems in the world. You can walk the entire length (1,420 metres) of the cave and gaze upon a seemingly neverending arrangement of natural stalactites and stalagmites during a one-hour tour. The formations are all enhanced by good lighting so you can take plenty of photos, although do so without flash so that you don’t disturb the sleeping bats. Just as you reach the end, you’ll be treated to a beautiful light show with music. The path is wellmaintained, but we recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
Grafitti art in Kutaisi City Centre Colchis Fountain Picasso Boy statue on White BridgeFor a dose of still calmness packed with nature, hop on an inflatable raft at Martvili Canyon. The boat ride is around 20 minutes, and well worth it to enjoy turquoise waters, lush greenery, and picturesque views away from the city. You will be provided with a life jacket and the boats are limited to six people, plus a guide. After you hop off, you can check out the walking trail where you can see even more waterfalls.
For those of you who have tried the zip lines in the UAE, you’re about to swap city skyline views and brown mountain peaks for endless green forests and lush mountains. The 800-metre Sairme Zip Line – which is the longest in the Caucasus region – brings you down from the mountains (700 metres above sea level) to the Sairme Resort. The zip line is divided into two, but you can do both for 50 Georgian Lari (Dhs65).
After your adrenaline-pumping experience, make a pit stop at the small town of Baghdati for its hot springs. The area is dotted with tiny colourful blocks where you’ll find taps dispensing mineral water which has unique properties said to help in overcoming ailments.
Located near White Bridge, Best Western Kutaisi is a great spot to stay at being so close to the city centre. On the top floor, you’ll find Roof Top Grill Restaurant where you can tuck into dinner and enjoy a drink or two before you turn in for the night. Prices start from Dhs440 per night. bwkutaisi.com
Boutique Grand Opera Hotel is a mere five minutes away from Colchis Fountain. The eco-friendly cosy rooms are adorned with wooden furniture, and the hotel even has a rooftop restaurant plus an underground restaurant and wine cellar. Prices start from Dhs420 per night. grand-opera-hotel-kutaisi. booked.net

Pkhali is a traditional Georgian dish made with minced vegetables, which is combined with walnut paste. It is usually served in three types: spinach (green), beetroot (purple) and white beans (white). It tastes great with warm pita bread or crackers.
Imeretian khachapuri is a circular filled bread stuffed with melting cheese – different from the khachapuri with an egg on top like at Tbilisi. In fact, there are about 53 types of khachapuri and if you take into consideration the different fillings, the number increases to 83. The Imeretian khachapuri can be eaten as a snack or can be paired with a fresh vegetable salad for a full meal.
Khinkali is a very popular dumpling in Georgian cuisine. You can order it stuffed with meat, and cheese, vegetables or mushrooms if you’re vegetarian. A quick lesson in eating this treat: Hold the ‘crown’, bite a small piece off at the bottom of the dumpling and slurp the delicious juice out. Eat the remainder and discard the top.

Live like a mermaid with a stay in a one-of-a-kind underwater suite
The jewel in the Palm Jumeirah crown, thanks to its iconic Arabic design, signature coral shade and sprawling twokilometre beach, Atlantis, The Palm is arguably Dubai’s most famous address.
Combining ornate Arabian aesthetics with an aquatic theme befitting of its name, this 23-storey property has laced the ocean into its whole look and feel. In the lobby, a 10-metre, 3,000-piece glass sculpture fills the grand 19-metre atrium, beaten in impressiveness only by the views from the huge windows that faces the pool and lush gardens.
There are two underwater suites, aptly named Neptune and Poseidon, both of which are spread over three floors. You enter from the top floor, where guests can choose between taking the grand staircase or move between floors in a private elevator. One floor below, you’ll find a spacious living area designed in calm, aquatic hues with floor-to-ceiling windows of Atlantis, The Palm’s aquarium. Living and dining spaces are ideal for entertaining, but there’s also a neat kitchenette tucked away for long-stay guests. The aquatic theme
continues as you descend to the ground floor, where the magic of this underwater experience really comes to life. While it’s easy to be impressed by Aqua di Parma amenities, gold and marble accents and a walk-in closet, it’s the glass window into the mesmerising aquarium that really makes this an otherworldly stay. A dip in the sumptuous tub comes with a high chance of watching a shark going about its business, and as you bed down on the crisp Frette linen, eagle rays, eels and kaleidoscopicallycoloured fish glide by to say goodnight. It’s a room with a view worth staying awake for.
This aqua-themed adventure playground is packed with endless activities to keep little ones and the young at heart ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘aah-ing’ their way around the 46-hectare resort. Of three glittering pools, most guests congregate around the magnificent Palm Pool, though for an adults-only escape, a beach day at White Beach (reopening soon) is a must-try for tan-topping. Then there’s all the other activities: the world’s largest
waterpark offers a choice of over 100 slides, a trip to The Lost Chambers Aquarium offers the chance to admire 65,000 marine animals, and the pampering spa –complete with licensed nail salon – is a 27-treatment room haven for switching off and escaping it all. The roster of unique experiences between Aquaventure and The Lost Chambers is truly standout.
An impressive collection of more than 30 restaurants ranges from celebrity chef led Nobu and Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen to family-friendly fun at Wavehouse, where an all-pleasing menu is perfectly paired with a bowling alley, gaming floor and even a Wave Rider. Fine dining fans are in for a treat at the resort’s duo of Michelin Star restaurants: expect a fish-focused tasting menu at Ossiano or signature Cantonese cuisine at Hakkasan. Our pick for a romantic evening is Seafire with its sultry lighting, slick service, and impressive menu of premium steaks that can be paired with decadent additions such as grilled jumbo prawns, foie gras or a half lobster.
Underwater suites complete with 24hour butler, Imperial Club access and complimentary access to Aquaventure Waterpark and The Lost Chambers Aquarium starts from Dhs18,205. atlantis.com/dubai
