… when I fell in love with Dubai. It was October 2015, and I’d landed in the city for the first time roughly six hours earlier. It had been a day of firsts: my first solo flight, my first trip to the Middle East, my first experience of Sheikh Zayed Road. But in that moment, as I cruised towards DIFC, face pressed to the window watching in awe at the twinkling skyscrapers and bright lights of the Burj Khalifa whizzed by, I knew that a piece of my heart would always belong to the UAE. Fast forward almost seven years and I still stand by that conclusion. In those seven years I’ve seen international brands arrive, whole neighbourhoods brought to life – even islands built. But where the most impressive strides have been made, in my humble opinion, is in the city’s homegrown space. No longer a stop along the way, or a temporary home for a year or two, UAE residents are making their roots right here, pouring their dreams and creativity into ventures that are transforming the UAE one idea at a time. So, in this issue, my first as editor, we’re celebrating them. The risk takers, the rule breakers, the underdogs: all of whom chose these shores to turn their passion projects into businesses to better the emirates. Give them a pat on the back from p20. If you’re returning to business this month after the summer break, welcome. We’ve got the perfect way to kick you back into action. While you were jetting o for far-flung shores, we’ve spent the summer seeking out the city’s best business lunches. Whether you’re sweetening up the boss, impressing clients or celebrating starting out on your own, you’ll find them from p29. So Dubai, let’s get down to business.

Not only can you spot Chef Chris at Waterfront Market, but it is also a hotspot for celebrity chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Nobu Matsuhisa, Giorgio Locatelli and Boy Logro who have all visited.

With temperatures refusing to go below 40 degrees, I had to find indoor recreation for the weekend. This Saturday saw me at IMG theme park, which has a host of brilliant rides, ranging from tame to hair-raising but so much fun (I’m looking at you, Thor Thunderspin). I also had a field time in the haunted hotel, but the claw marks left on my arm by my friends should be warning enough for the fainthearted.

It is a certified fact that the best beaches in the UAE can be found on Saadiyat Island. Generally I’m more of a pool girl, but offer me crystal clear waters and pure white sand and I’m willing to make an exception. I spent a relaxing weekend at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi and couldn’t have been more grateful for the chance to really switch off after what has turned out to be a (surprisingly) busy summer. If you get a chance to go, do it – it’s good for the soul.

If you’re a regular reader of this feature, you’ll likely have seen me write about my bad habit – biting my nails – before. So, most of my time in the salon is spent getting nail extensions. Although it’s been around for almost 20 years, and has eight branches across the UAE, this week was my first visit to Sisters Beauty Lounge, that recently opened a gorgeous new City Walk salon. As well as dreamy interiors, the friendly nail technician swiftly had my nails back in check, perfectly painted in my go-to peachy pink.

This district in Old Dubai is packed with plenty of museums and spots for a culture vulture like me. At Al Shindagha Museum, there are four new exhibition pavilions I want to check out that showcase Dubai’s history and culture: the traditional pavilion themed rooms, showcasing the life on the land, a traditional food house, and a house of poetry.

Who are you, and what made you famous? I am known online as Supercar Blondie. I create content around cars, which is shared to over 80 million subscribers. What inspired you to make the move to Dubai?

Alex Hirschi SUPERCAR BLONDIE

Fourteen years ago, my nowhusband got a job offer in a bank in Dubai, so we moved from Brisbane, Australia. I got a job as a radio host and working freelance in journalism until five years ago when I started Supercar Blondie. What is your favourite car you’ve ever driven? It was a Koenigsegg Agera RS from a Swedish Above: Testing out a McLaren Elva manufacturer. It’s so powerful that it makes you feel as though you shouldn’t even be in control of the car. They only made a few and if you wanted to buy one now, they can sell for $10 million. What three things would you pack for a UAE road trip? I’d have to pack water, my three dogs and plenty of wood – just in case I ended up stuck in the sand. Who would be your dream passenger on a long drive? Honestly, no one. Whenever I’m in a car, I’m normally with my camera crew, or I’m being interviewed, so if I had a chance to go on a long drive, I would love to be alone.

What was the first car you ever drove? My first car was a seven-yearold Mitsubishi, which was passed down from my older brother to my older sister and then me. I learnt to drive when I was about 14 years old. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love to just come home, play with my dogs and see my friends. I’ve been in Dubai for so long now that I’ve built a brilliant network and whenever I’m not travelling, I love to just hang out with them. What’s been your biggest achievement so far? It’s got to be taking this business from just me and my husband at zero subscribers to now 40 of us in the team. We’ve got an amazing office on The Palm, and a brilliant team of around 18 nationalities – some of which have flown across the world to work with us. What do you love about the UAE? I love that there’s always something going on; I love the spontaneity. I also love how the UAE is at the forefront of technology, and there’s an app for everything. What frustrates you about the UAE? The heat. It’s very difficult to be outside and film content when it’s 47 degrees Celsius. Do you think that Dubai will be your forever home? It’s difficult to say but I think so, yes. Unless there was a big work opportunity somewhere else, then maybe I could see myself in New York or LA, but I really do love Dubai. What’s next in the pipeline? We just launched our editorial site wheresupercarblondie.comreaderscanfindall the latest news about tech, luxury, gaming, and lifestyle. We’ve built a team of creators and publish across all platforms and will now be posting lots of written content on our website. @supercarblondie

It’s important to understand your own strength and skills. There will be lows, but that love for what you do is what will push you towards success, and when you get there, the high will outweigh all those moments of difficulty you questioned if you could overcome. Resilience, discipline and the desire to succeed are essential qualities.

What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? Creating awareness of men’s mental health is something we would like to use our influence to highlight and break down barriers. There seems to be a real stigma surrounding men talking to each other and asking for help and whilst many men take care of their physical condition, they neglect to nurture their inner wellbeing. What advice would you give to others wanting to set up their own business?

What inspired you to start a business in the UAE? I wanted to build a community for those who feel as passionately about the sport as I do where they could grow their love for the physical rewards whilst educating themselves on the innovation of the psychological elements boxing has to offer.

With a passion to help others achieve the same, the Jumeirah centre has evolved to offer a wide range of treatments all designed to enhance people’s physical, mental and emotional health. “I wanted the space to be a haven of positive energy, where people could take time out to relax and recharge, away from the stresses of normal life.” Building a business in Dubai was a ‘natural decision’ for Lootah. “As a female entrepreneur, giving back to my community and acting as a catalyst to improving their health, happiness and everyday life gives me incredible pride and satisfaction.”

The menu is easy to get excited about, especially when you love cheese as much as I do. Our first dish, mangal salad (Dhs45), is served with oven-fresh Arabic bread; allowing guests to scoop on piles of finely chopped aubergine, courgette, bell peppers and a creamy melted cheese. Despite the combination of ingredients, the flavour blends seamlessly to create a truly balanced dish. Additional starters are split between cold and hot mezze, and from the cold section we opt for yellowtail Lakedra (Dhs160). It’s a simple dish, devised of four thickly sliced raw yellowtail pieces, served with an olive oil and lemon dressing. It’s not complex but it is delicious. We also couldn’t resist trying the raw kibbeh (Dhs170) to see how it compares to what we’ve tasted in Lebanon. Using Angus tenderloin, the kitchen serves the meat raw in a thick stone bowl, alongside a serving of crisp, crunchy lettuce. “You must eat the two together,” our server tells us, and we happily oblige, squeezing fresh lemon on top. The meat could have done with a little more seasoning, but the lettuce pairing was indeed an excellent choice. From the hot mezze, we choose the cheese borek (Dhs125), which has been given a Dubai twist thanks to the sprinklings of fresh truffle. Warm crispy filo pastry is stuffed with creamy truffle and cheese sauce; it’s super tasty and a generous size, ideally to be shared amongst at least four people. Returning to the menu, we forgo the main courses in favour of the ‘bazaar’ section, choosing a wagyu picaña from the rotisserie (sold on grammage, Dhs650 per kg). The meat was beautifully tender, coated in a spiced rub for extra flavour. The only let down was a minimum cooking temperature of medium, as we felt that the dish would have been even better served medium rare. The Best to Shirley Bassey’s Big Spender. The choreography might not be as slick as some of its competitors, but that doesn’t seem to bother diners. Each set builds into the next, and by the early hours, guests are happily joining in, waving napkins and sparklers with gusto. It’s hard to define the cuisine as anything other than a menu of Dubai crowd-pleasers. Starters like a creamy burrata (Dhs115), a prettily plated beef tartare (Dhs165), and a crunchy flatbread topped with rocket, truffle and aged balsamic (Dhs145) can all be upgraded with one gram of black truffle for Dhs65. Not that they need it. All the dishes are well-balanced and flavourful. A decadent 30-piece display of maki rolls, sashimi and nigiri (Dhs650) arrives theatrically on dry ice, a welcome interlude before mains of wagyu beef tenderloin (Dhs380) and poached sea bass (Dhs210), both of which are enjoyable, but feel a little heavy for the lively setting, while the white wine sauce that coats the sea bass fillet is a touch overpowering. If you order one dessert, let it be the baked Alaska (Dhs160), with a soft pistachio sponge topped with peaks of meringue, it’s presented with a pouring of flaming Cointreau. REVIEW: TAIKUN

How does this sultry show fare a second time around?

T he concept of dinner and a show divides the What’s On office. While some applaud the addition of entertainment, others feel it’s an excuse to underdeliver on the food. But new entries into this genre keep coming, and the latest to join the ranks is Taikun. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Taikun previously existed in Vida Downtown. But after a short hiatus, the brand is back at a sparkly new spot in Habtoor City. The new venue has the feel of a sultry supper club, with interiors that give it a burlesque-inspired design. Crimson velvet walls encase the white clothed tables, set with ruby red velvet chairs and each illuminated by flickering candlelight. Accents of gold across the bar only add to the grandeur. The stage is smaller than we expect for a venue of this style, but the restaurant’s intimate size means that every table has a decent view of the action. A word of warning for the early diner: guests only start arriving from 9pm onwards. So, when we naively arrive at 8pm, we’re sat alone save for the friendly wait staff for almost an hour. But, by the time the entertainment begins, most tables are occupied.

WHAT’SVERDICTON Taikun is a great setting for a fun-filled night out with friends. Arrive late, enjoy theentertainmenttheandstayuntilearlyhours.

EAT // BRUNCH OF THE MONTH

The restaurant has a new adults-only summer brunch that features some its most popular dishes, and we couldn’t wait to try it. Unfortunately, the Dubai summer forced us to dine indoors away from the gorgeous outdoor on theServicebeach. is quick and soon after arriving, a plate of freshly baked bread with butter appeared on the table –‘a warm-up’, we were told by the friendly waiter. A trio of dips is next with spicy feta (our personal favourite), Myrra hummus and tzatziki, which you can mop up with warm pitaFrombread.the five starters, we relished the explosion of flavours of the peinirli – a boat-shaped open pie with tomato and Greek-Turkish Kasseri cheese; and the tuna carpaccio vanished as quickly as it melted in our mouth with flavours of truffle, Greek yoghurt and crunchy pine nuts. The kataifi was also enjoyable but could have been perfected with more honey.

WHAT’SVERDICTON

For mains, the corn-fed baby chicken, although tender, was a little bland for our liking, although it comes with tzatziki, which did add flavour to the dish. Our second choice was kleftiko – a rustic traditional lamb dish served on the bone but given a modern twist. The 48-hour boneless lamb is gamey and comes on a bed of delicious feta mashed potatoes with tomato jus. For our sweet treat, the milopita – a traditional Greek version of apple pie – is served in a crispy filo pastry with vanilla cream. The pastry was soft, crunchy and had a light flavour. Our favourite was the torrija – a Spanish-style French toast with ice cream and hazelnut creme anglaise – a medley of flavours, temperature and textures. Myrra, Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeirah, Sat, 12pm to 5pm (three-hour package) until Oct end. Dhs399, Tel: (0)4 770 myrrarestaurant.com1433.

This Palm West Beach spot may be all about the beach, but the food more than measures up... T he Club has been an instant hit on Palm Jumeirah. At the top of Palm West Beach, it made a strong start with beautiful SĀN Beach. Next came Tulum-inspired Eva Beach House, swiftly followed by Playa, a vibrant, Peruvianinspired beach club with a boho edge. Positioning itself as more than just another addition to the daytime tantopping scene, the team behind Playa has put a strong emphasis on giving a true taste of Peru to diners. Inside the restaurant, the design details are everywhere: shimmering scales on the ceiling in shades of purple, pink and orange merge into walls covered in stenciled murals, and a long bar tiled in a warm papaya shade shifts into a dining counter with seating for twelve. More social seating comes in the form of wood and stone booths designed for big groups to gather over Playa’s array of Peruvian plates. There’s also alfresco seating on the terrace, where diners can catch-up with their toes in the sand, a mix of DJ beats and the sound of the sea providing a welcome soundtrack. At the helm of the kitchen, chef Carlo Valentino has created a menu of Nikkei dishes that features a selection of ceviches and tiraditos, salads, meats from the robata and josper, plus an array of meaty mains. Playa’s founder Dani Khairallah revealed to us that his Peruvian wife had a strong part to play in the culinary direction.Fromthe raw section, a highlight is the beautifully-plated salmon tiradito (Dhs85) packed with punchy, citrus flavour, and the classic Playa ceviche (Dhs90) theatrically served on dry ice. To go alongside the fish, we opt for a meaty wagyu maki (Dhs90) and it doesn’t disappoint. Each piece is a mouthful of tender wagyu and soft sushi rice topped with fresh spring onion. Salads aren’t so impressive, with the seaweed salad (Dhs55) lacking flavour, and while we enjoy the truffle and caviar additions to the Peruvian corn salad (Dhs65), the ratio of corn to lettuce and tomato wasn’t as high as we’d have wanted. Main courses return to the high standard we saw at the start, and if there’s only one thing you order at Playa, make it the melt-in-the-mouth lomo saltado (Dhs195) – marinated sirloin cooked to perfection and served in delicate cubes. Paired with a side of crispy fried yucas fritas (Dhs45), it’s a meal we’re still talking about weeks later. Peruvian cuisine may not be on the map for its desserts, but the Playa fondant (Dhs65) is a sweet note to conclude on, as we fight over the final spoonfuls of chocolate. B orn in Beirut and brought over to Dubai in July, Amelia has captured the attention of many a resident, thanks to its impressive interiors and reputation for brilliant cuisine. Found outside Address Sky View, Amelia has a separate entrance and parking, and guests pull up to an LED-lit keyhole-shaped archway, wrapped in green vines and leading toward the grand doorway entrance. Inside, the space is vast with twostorey high windows, an organ-inspired DJ booth, vintage-style plane propellers rotating above the bar and an elegant, winding staircase that leads up to another dining area. The waiter takes us through the menu –a large, singular sheet, purposely stained to look weathered. Starting with sushi, we opt for the sake (Dhs78). It’s a salmon maki roll with avocado, cucumber, takuan, yuzu kosho and passion fruit. Sliced into eight, the portion is a decent size for sharing and the maki pieces are packed with flavour, aided by the yuzu sauce dripping from the top of the roll. From the tiradito section, the hamachi (Dhs94) is a must-try. The slices of raw fish are beautifully presented, topped with jalapeños and edible flowers. Swimming in ponzu sauce, the yellowtail is fresh and moreish, as we keep reaching over for seconds. You’d think such a large space would be tricky to fill, but it’s the venue’s second week of operation and the guests are flooding in. The music is an uplifting mix of house beats that we’re Shazaming so that we can add them to our playlist. Back to the food and we’re working our way through the falmmkuchen a la trufa (Dhs128) – a type of truffle pizza made with flammkuchen dough, four types of cheese, mushrooms and baby rocca. It’s light, crispy, and simply delicious, and stands to be a solid contender in the quest for the best truffle pizza in Dubai. From the main courses, we opt for carnes ala parrilla (Dhs190). It’s a fun DIY way of serving meat, as guests are given their own mini parrilla grill and plenty of thinly sliced raw meat, which they have to place on the hot plate to sear on each side. As someone who likes their meat rare, it’s a fun challenge to quickly cook it personally and get closer to our liking each time. As the night builds, so does the atmosphere, with guests enjoying the vibe just as much as we are. It’s the type of place you’ll want to bring your friends to, especially once the nightclub opens later this year.

D ubai – the city of dreams. One that is packed with creativity and acts as a muse for many all over the world. One artist that fell under the spell of the city is visual artist, Zak Eazy. Originally from Lille, France, Zak works in digital marketing while creating digital artworks in his spare time, though he dreams of a day where he can focus solely on his art. An avid traveller, his artworks feature famous landmarks from his trips. These include the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Taj Mahal and London’s Big Ben. Eazy fell in love with Dubai in 2021, after being encouraged to visit by friends who are residents. This trip inspired him to create a Dubai series called City of Dreams. Zak’s creative influences include nature, architecture, travel and surrealism, and viewers can spot all of these reflected in his work. His first Dubai creation featured Burj Al Arab, with the iconic hotel tinged in pink and surrounded by flamingos in the Arabian Gulf. Another landmark he chose to showcase was the Dubai Frame, which divides old and new Dubai. For this piece, Eazy featured the architectural structure in the desert, juxtaposed with jumping dolphins and an ocean wave. “I really loved the story about the architecture of the Dubai Frame,” Zak told us. “Depending on which side you’re on, you can see either old or new Dubai – it’s a way to imagine theHisfuture.”most recent piece depicts Burj Khalifa. Reminiscing on his first trip to the top, Zak said: “The view of Dubai was just incredible”. When asked when he plans to return, Zak shared his dream of moving to Dubai in 2023. While that dream is still in the making, Zak aims to create more unique edits of Dubai and has set his eyes on Museum of the Future next. For those interested in buying his prints, Instagram is currently the best, but an online store is in the works. Discover all of his creations at @zakeazy.

The tour began in June 2022 and will continue until February 2023, stopping in cities across the UK, Indonesia, Singapore, The Philippines, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. From Dune to Star Wars, the UAE is a dream background for big-time blockbusters

A s soon as Dune made its debut back in 2021, Legendary and Warner Bros. announced that a sequel was lined up. Dune 2 is set to detail the second half of Frank Herbert’s epic scifi novel with Denis Villeneuve returning to his seat in the director’s chair. Within five months, the first edition of this much-loved sci-fi flick garnered an impressive $400 million in the box office. At the 94th Academy Awards, the film

scooped up six Oscars: Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Production, Best Original Score, Best Sound and Best Film Editing – the most awarded movie of theFansnight.in the UAE will be quick to point out that a decent chunk of Dune was filmed in our great capital. If you were unaware of this fact, the vast desert setting of planet Arrakis was none other than the Empty Quarter in Abu Dhabi.

Dune: Part 2 Villeneuve promises a more intense sequel as the remnants of the House Atreides – led by Paul and Lady Jessica – try to rebuild after the catastrophic events of the first movie.

On shooting in Abu Dhabi for Dune, Robbie McAree of Epic Films, which provided production services for Dune stated that the UAE has seen its share of Hollywood, Bollywood and independent movies who chose the country as a filming destination but having a film like Dune really raises the bar. He added that that the producers, upon seeing the location, fell in love with the UAE and the vast desert landscapes.

For Dune, shooting took place in July and August for the perfect look. However, the sequel will be filmed in the latter half of this year – a time of year that is significantly cooler – a welcome break for the film team and actors, we’re sure.

Speaking of actors, as of now, Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård and Javier Bardem are confirmed to take up their original roles. They will be joined by Lea Seydoux, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. It has not been confirmed if Jason Momoa and Oscar Isaac will be making comebacks. The film’s expected release date is November 2023.

The UAE’s capital will reprise its role as the iconic backdrop of the desert planet Arrakis in Denis Villeneuve’s version of Frank Herbert’s best-selling story.

WHATSON.AE | SEPTEMBER 2022 55

The picturesque scenes that Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter boasts matched the director’s vision for planet Arrakis.

Five out of five sweaty palms for the stunts in this, the fourth Mission Impossible movie. Super-agent Ethan Hunt and his team take on another deadly mission to prove their innocence when they are framed for bombing the Kremlin. The sequence on Burj Khalifa is undoubtedly Cruise’s most famous stunt to date. It involves a start on the 123rd floor, a malfunctional suction glove, rappelling down the building and an almost-fall that requires his associates to clutch onto his foot as he hangs on for dear life. CULTURE // MOVIES FILMED IN THE UAE

We always knew the force was strong with Abu Dhabi, but did you know the planet of Jakku – where we first meet Rey, the central protagonist of the final Star Wars trilogy – is actually our very own Abu Dhabi? Or at least that’s where those scenes were filmed. The movie centres around Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, who must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace when a new threat to the galaxy rises. Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, so having your location immortalised as part of the saga is a pretty big deal. Abu Dhabi actually gets a name check in the movie too, during a conversation with companion Finn, Rey refers to a location called ‘Liwa Outpost’. Filmed at: Empty Quarter in Abu Dhabi

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) This sequel to the hugely popular 2001 movie starring Will Smith, didn’t hit quite as well with the critics, but it is absolutely watchable if you let yourself embrace the cheesiness of it all. As you might expect from a film that puts humanity on the brink of annihilation, there’s not a lot of happy imagery for planet Earth – Dubai’s big moment comes in the form of the Burj Khalifa being up-ended and used to shish kebab a section of London’s South Bank. Those aliens really did us dirty. Filmed at: Burj Khalifa

There’s some pretty simple box office arithmetic that goes into putting Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds together. You know you’re going to get epic cinematography backed up by frantic action scenes and sassy dialogue, delivered with trademark Reynolds panache, which neatly sums up this particular high energy, super fun Netflix movie. And a lot of it was filmed right here in Abu Dhabi.

Furious 7 (2015) Love them or hate them, Fast and Furious movies are a big deal at the box office. And the seventh installment of the franchise, Furious 7, takes some of its road rage out on the cinematic streets of our capital. In one of the most physics-defying scenes from a series known for playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) take a Lykan Hypersport car and jump between the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers. Twice. This movie was sadly Paul Walker’s last, as he tragically passed away during filming. Impressive CGI rendering was used to fill-in his final scenes to make for an emotional farewell.

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

When the location scouts were searching for a futuristic cityscape to set the third installment of this sci-fi reboot saga, Dubai must have stuck out immediately. Its architecture, fast cars, smart city credentials and Dubai Metro stations that look straight out of 3020 make it the perfect candidate for offering a glimpse of what’s to come. Filmed at: Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai International Financial Centre and Burj Khalifa

Filmed at: A total number of 24 locations including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Aldar’s headquarters, Etihad Towers, Arkan – Al Ain Cement Factory, Liwa desert, Sheikh Zayed Bridge and Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque.

Preventative practices are the mantra of Maison Sante, a new wellness clinic found in Meyan Mall. Combining a series of services from physiotherapy to psychology, Chinese medicine, laser IV and more, with a welcoming cafe and supplement store, Maison Sante stands out. Visitors are made to feel welcome and at home in the bright, modern space and can choose their preferred treatment following a consultation with Dr Maria Alonso. We were feeling a little stiff (perks of a desk job) and referred to Sandra Serrano for some physio. Going beyond the pushes and pulls of a typical session, Sandra offers helpful tips on how to introduce more movement into your daily routine. No, not more gym sessions (although we could probably do with some), but small stretches to reset the body and help teach the brain the correct patterns of posture. We also try a spot of laser IV – just like a regular IV drip but instead of fluids into the veins, it’s laser light that flows through the catheter. Different colours offer different solutions – we have 15 minutes each of red and blue, to improve circulation, boost energy and promote healthy red blood cells, although it’s recommended to have four sessions to feel the full effects.

// LEARN

Our ‘Fall Ball’ season starts in September and runs for 12 weeks. Membership costs Dhs500. We encourage everyone to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates and events, and of course, to sign up and play.

When did you start the Emirates Softball League? We started ESL in 2017 when the Dubai Softball League (DSL) came to an end due to the Dubai Canal project demolishing our old pitch. One night, we called a few people together to practice in an open field near Arabian Ranches. It wasn’t ideal as there was a football goalpost in the middle of the field near second base. The next weekend we decided to do it again and more people showed up, and it snowballed from there. So, you managed to find a new home to play ball in the end? Between bouncing around different school grounds, we ended up making friends with Dubai Little League (DLL). We’d umpire, coach or just help out when they needed, and they kindly invited us to use their beautiful facility. That’s when we finally had a proper field. It’s been five years now and our league grows every season. Can both men and women play?

Mondays, which is competitive, and Fridays which are social and mixed. We also travel to play. Later this year we’re off to Germany. We also host tournaments, including the Middle East Softball Championship, where GCC teams come to Dubai and play. Is there a lot of ‘trash talk’ or is it friendly and fun? Depending on the night, it can get quite competitive, but overall it’s really social. You make lifelong friends. It becomes a big family. How can people get involved?

62 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE ‘Foul ball’. ‘Fly ball’. ‘Drop ball’. These are just a handful of terms you will come across shortly after stepping onto the home plate for your first game of softball. But ‘don’t be put off’, say brothers Tommy and Robert Fiala, co-founders of Emirates Softball League (ESL), who are on the lookout for new recruits. They’re out to prove this American sport is a fast route to fun and fitness.

Yes. Monday nights are our competitive league, which is mostly men. Friday nights are mixed leagues. We have three leagues for all skill levels. Each team must have a minimum of two ladies playing at all times, but most rosters have between four and five. Currently, we have 12 teams that play on Fridays and five teams that play on Mondays. It’s a melting pot of nationalities but our most social night is Friday.

Words: Laura Coughlin SPORT SOMETHING NEW Emirates Softball League wants new players –are you ready to play ball?

How does softball differ to baseball? There are a few differences but ultimately it’s the same principle and logic. Softballs are bigger. Men hit a 12-inch ball and ladies hit an 11-inch ball. Pitching is also different. The pitch must have an arc of between six and 12 feet from the ground, and we toss it underhand and slow. There are also 10 people on the field instead of nine in baseball. The rest is basically the same. What kit do you need? For beginners, we say come as you are. ESL has gloves and bats for league players to borrow. As people get more involved, they tend to want better gear. Team kits and names are decided by the captains, and they create their own uniforms. How often do you play?

Dubai meets London Discover your favourite locals abroad PAGE 66 OMAN ROAD TRIP p70 A WEEKEND IN RAK p74 TRAVEL DESTINATIONS | STAYCATIONS

W e’re fortunate in Dubai to have imported many of the globe’s biggest names in hospitality. From Coya and Indochine to Nammos, Zuma and Nobu, the list goes on. In recent years though, we’ve seen more of our favourite homegrown concepts make their way overseas. La Cantine just opened in Mykonos, Gaia exported to Monaco, Opa is in St Tropez, and a handful of hotspots have chosen London as their home. But with 7,000 kilometres between them, can the sister outposts match up to their desert-based siblings?

66 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE TRAVEL // LONDON

Some of our favourite Dubai hotspots have made their way to London. Elise Kerr sees how they fare up in the Big Smoke...

AWAYHOMEFROM

Externally, Il Borro Tuscan Bistro in London couldn’t be more polar opposite than the one found in Dubai. In Dubai, Il Borro is located in Turtle Lagoon of Jumeirah Al Nassem; a ground floor trattoria with a large outdoor terrace that overlooks the turtles as the sun sets behind Burj Al Arab. In London, we’re presented with a twostorey terraced building on busy Berkeley Street in Mayfair. Inside, however, we’re thrown into familiarity as the interiors effortlessly convey the high-end warmth that Il Borro guests adore. Dubai is ingrained in the story of the London space, as our waiter immediately launches into the brand’s timeline with genuine enthusiasm. The menu is nearidentical to its original, which makes us wonder if the best-sellers are the same in both regions. We start with the pappa al pomodoro (approx. Dhs71), although it’s a little more rustic than we’d imagined. It’s hard to finish everything as we know we have a pasta course on the way. Choosing the tortelli con zucca e tartufo (approx. Dhs142), we tuck into al dente tortellini pieces filled with creamy pumpkin, topped with crispy pumpkin pieces and fresh truffle shavings. Next, we go for a filetto di branzino (approx. Dhs161). It’s a beautiful piece of delicate sea bass, with perfectly crispy skin and served on a vivid green bed of pea and mint puree. Our last stop is a light and fluffy tiramisu, which has just the right balance of cream and caffeine. ilborrotuscanbistro.co.uk and an oddly bright open kitchen at the back of the venue. It’s a weekday when we visit, and a glamourous four-piece jazz band are playing in the middle of the room, providing a retro supper club-style atmosphere. On weekends, we’re told the entertainment cranks up a notch with cabaret-style dancers. Those familiar with The Maine Land Brasserie in Dubai’s Business Bay will recognise many of the menu’s dishes, such as crispy fish tacos, slow cooked short rib, Maine lobster and a selection of steaks. We couldn’t resist the tacos (approx. Dhs90), one of our favourite dishes in the Dubai outposts, and they don’t disappoint here either. The lightly battered fish balances perfectly with the fresh pico de gallo and drizzle of sour cream. We also try the T-bone (approx. Dhs700). While grass-fed meat wouldn’t normally be our first choice, the meat is suitably tender and cooked to our medium rare request. The restaurant carries many similarities to its original, however the added element of entertainment seems to elevate this outpost from a great restaurant to an exclusive cabaret club. themainemayfair.com

The Maine Mayfair

WHATSON.AE | SEPTEMBER 2022 67

Il Borro Tuscan Bistro London

One of the UAE’s finest homegrown concepts, The Maine, had no issues in making its mark in Mayfair. Proudly hosting some of the biggest names in fashion within the first four weeks, The Maine Mayfair earned its place as talk of the town in no time. The two-storey space, set within a historical townhouse in Hanover Square, has a casual yet cosy outdoor terrace on the ground level, but head downstairs and you’ll discover a sultry brasserie, lit only by the glow of some very glitzy chandeliers, small lamps on each of the luxe marble tables

DINING

For our main course, or ‘large plate’, we share a churrasco Rio grande (approx. Dhs248), which includes sliced rib-eye, chorizo and filet mignon all on one platter. Sadly, the kitchen was out of farofa (a traditional quinoa-like side dish), so we opted for rice, but it was also served with plenty of chimichurri and signature dipping sauces. The meat was well-seasoned and cooked so that it’s just pink in the middle. Having a mix of cuts to choose from is a dream for meat-lovers, so we were more than satisfied, mopping up the juices ‘til the end. sushisamba.com

The menu features more Brazilian dishes than the Dubai outpost, which focuses a little too much on sushi and not enough on samba for our liking. Taking advantage of the opportunity, we go full Carioca on the mains - but first, it’s a sushi starter. We try the samba London (approx. Dhs87), which somehow manages to pack in tuna, salmon, hamachi, avocado, asparagus and onion into one neat roll, topped with hishiho miso, crispy yuba and a yuzu dressing. Despite the mix of ingredients, the flavours blend well for a refreshing start to the meal.

SushiSamba Heron Tower While Palm Tower Dubai might not have been the originator of this iconic restaurant, it’s certainly made a name for itself in the last year. SushiSamba opened in London’s Heron Tower in 2012, followed by Covent Garden in 2018 and Dubai in 2021 (as well as an outpost in Las Vegas and a soon-to-open restaurant and beach club in Doha). The restaurant takes over the 38th and 39th floor of the skyscraper in Liverpool Street, with views of The Gherkin, The Shard and many more of London’s best-known landmarks – whether you’re dining next to the restaurant’s huge floor to ceiling windows, or its expansive outdoor terrace (home to SushiSamba’s famed orange-leaf tree).

68 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE

A more unusual maki choice is the el topo roll (approx. Dhs73). We were intrigued by the fresh melted cheese, which sits atop salmon, jalapeño, shiso, and is finished with crispy shallots, spicy mayo and eel sauce. It divides the table due to the unusual textures and use of warmth in a typically cold dish.

It’s worth trying, but we’re still trying to decide if we liked it or not.

In any restaurant with a menu that features gyoza, we will be trying said gyoza, and SushiSamba is no exception. The only option is wagyu gyoza (approx. Dhs92), but that’s alright with us. We receive tightly packed little parcels, pinched at the sides to stop any juices escaping. Inside is an explosion of flavour, bursting with delicious beef, kabocha purée and sweet soy that effortlessly disappears in just one bite.

SLEEPING

Al Mare is the hotel’s signature restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from its ground floor location. It’s an elegant space that feels stylish and premium, with white clothed tables set against quilted leather booths and soft furnishings in royal blue tones.

The morning presents a menu of classic breakfast dishes, along with a small buffet serving fruit, cold cuts and pastries. After 12pm, the a la carte menu offers modern Italian cuisine, with a focus on fresh seafood, working its way from crudo to pesce through a series of insalatas, homemade pastas and main courses.

The Carlton Tower by Jumeirah Jumeirah and Dubai go together like Burj Khalifa and selfies. The city is home to 12 Jumeirah properties (soon to be 13), with another in Abu Dhabi, so most of us are well accustomed to its level of hospitality. But we were a little apprehensive to see how the brand would translate in London’s upmarket area of Knightsbridge. The Carlton Tower by Jumeirah recently underwent a huge renovation, and now has a very luxe yet welcoming feel to it. The redesign focused around letting in much more natural light, creating big windows that overlook Cadogan Place Park. The hotel is home to a large indoor swimming pool, housed in its chic spa with luxurious day beds surrounded by sheer white curtains, which are perched on the mezzanine level under an arced window that floods the room with even more natural light. The rooms are well-designed and comfortable, finished in that signature Jumeirah style. We stay in a balcony room that has a small ledge just wide enough to stand on and enjoy the view of the park and across the top of London’s busy streets. The first thing that struck us was the size of the TV – pinned to the wall was a close-to-cinema size screen and on the other side of the room, a plush velvet L-shaped sofa. The second thing was the level of detail that had gone into making the experience personalised and special. We received leather key cards, emblazoned with our initials; monogrammed slippers in the softest material we’ve ever touched; and on the coffee table was a scrabble board complete with edible biscuit letters, spelled out with our names. Talk about a warm welcome.

The hotel is just a five-minute walk from Knightsbridge tube station, and if you keep walking, you’ll reach Hyde Park. Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace are also within walking distance, so anyone looking to stay in the thick of the city should definitely consider The Carlton Tower by Jumeirah. jumeirah.com

Mini Cooper Countryman scenic route

70 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE TRAVEL // OMAN

Words: Elise Kerr

Dense fog, lush greenery, vast waterfalls, wild waves, seemingly endless desert, rolling dunes, winding wadis, Mars-like mountainscape, abandoned towns, bustling cities, countless camels, baby goats and a few donkeys – these are just a handful of things you will see in Oman when you experience it on four wheels. Exploring Oman’s natural wonders by car allows you to witness many of the country’s most underrated assets. So, armed with a full tank of fuel, our favourite snacks and essential road trip tunes, we hit the road fromTheDubai.journey begins with a six-hour drive to Alila Jabal Akhdar, where we check into a mountain view room, although realistically, as we’re 2,000 metres above

TAKING THE Jabal Villa Master Bedroom

Alila Jabal Akhdar Pool

If you’ve ever considered a road trip through Oman, now is the perfect time sea level, we imagine every room has a mountain view. To reach the hotel you’ll need a 4x4, and our transport of choice is a Mini Cooper Countryman. The small but mighty vehicle is the perfect size, with plenty of space for luggage (and snacks) and has more than enough power and agility to get us across the diverse types of terrain we come across throughout the road trip. The resort is totally remote, and the stark silence is a welcome change from city life as we sip coffee on our balcony in the morning. With a breathtaking infinity pool that stretches into the mountainous view, the hotel’s location and facilities sell themselves. However, the superb dining options and faultless service are an additional bonus.

The hotel offers excursions, but we’re here for a solo adventure so we hop back in our trusty Countryman and head to Jabal Samhan. During Khareef season the clouds lay low, meaning when you’re on top of the mountain, the fluffy white pillows sit Dolphins Beach Alila Hinu Bay Pool Villa Jabal Samhan

Seeing an alternative side to Oman, away from luxe resorts and tourist attractions, gives us a new perspective of the country and a deeper understanding of its culture. While the view of mountains and beaches can be enjoyed from a hotel room, it’s venturing into the unknown and soaking up the surroundings that will imprint the experience in your memory forever.

WHATSON.AE | SEPTEMBER 2022 71 ■ Give yourself plenty of time at the border and make sure you have all your documents ready (including Oman car insurance) ■ Police check points may also be along your route so keep your ID, documents, insurance and car registration to hand ■ Keep your eyes peeled for speed cameras – Oman has a 10kph buffer (unlike 20kph in most of the UAE) ■ Watch out for speed bumps, especially in small towns where they tend to blend into the road and are not always sign-posted TOP TIPS FOR THE ROAD

On our final day, we make our way up the eastern coastline towards Muscat. While it’s not the most efficient route home, it’s certainly the most beautiful. The varying landscapes we come across are somewhat mindblowing, and unlike the busy one-lane drive down to Salalah, on the way back we rarely encounter other cars, giving us free reign to enjoy the mountains, desert and beachside roads to ourselves.

below you. You can get a decent view throughout the morning (weather dependent), but the best time to arrive is at sunrise. Wadi Durbat is a popular spot to visit, with cascading waterfalls and boat rides around the lake, but unless you enjoy sharing your experience with hundreds of other tourists, we’d give this one a miss. Instead, drive to Dolphins Beach, given its name due to the high probability of watching wild dolphins happily bounce along the horizon. Even if you don’t manage to see them, you’ll enjoy a secluded patch of sand and calm waves, set beneath a picturesque mountain – many of Salalah’s beaches are rocky and overgrown, so this one is worth the trip. The drive along the coast road alone is truly magical, with natural beauty around each winding bend.

We pass through many small towns throughout the journey, which show the reality of how many people in Oman live, built with all the necessities needed for a simple life. Villages next to the sea are stacked up with fishing boats, while many of the towns further into the desert have been abandoned, likely due to extreme weather conditions and lack of infrastructure.

To find out more about Mini visit mini-dubai.com When it’s time for the next leg of our trip, a 7am departure is required. We’re headed to Alila’s second Oman-based resort, found close to Salalah in Hinu Bay. The ‘quick route’ cuts right through the middle of the country and takes us across almost 1,000km of completely untouched land. Empty desert fades into harsh dusty conditions, before slowly turning greener as we approach the coast. Oman’s annual monsoon season, called Khareef, runs until September, meaning for three months, thick cloud envelops the huge mountain that blocks the desert from the beach. As we approach it, we find our thermostat dropping from 45° Celsius to 25° Celsius in less than half an hour, and soon we’re passing through dense fog and mist with minimal visibility. The surroundings we can see, however, offer lush greenery and thick forest, clearly benefitting from the intense moisture. When we reach the coast, conditions are still overcast, and the ocean waves are thrashing aggressively against the beach rocks. After eight-and-a-half hours, we make it to Alila Hinu Bay and are welcomed with a refreshing hibiscus tea. The boutique property features both rooms and villas, and ours has a private pool, beach view and outdoor seating area. The interiors are gorgeous, featuring a modern, beachy design with chic furnishings and a part-alfresco bathroom.

This is the final reason why you need to have Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island on your staycation radar. Lead-in rooms on standard rates start at a wallet-friendly Dhs485 per night (with breakfast, plus tax), and the big one we stayed in is around Dhs765 per night (with breakfast, plus tax) based on two adults and two children sharing. movenpick.com/marjanisland

74 SEPTEMBER 2022 | WHATSON.AE

THE LOCATION Just an hour’s drive from Dubai, the grounds of Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island unravel along a 300-metre stretch of beachy peninsula. All of the rooms have a full or partial sea view and maybe it’s the (not visible from our lounger) mountains — but Ras Al Khaimah just often feels a little cooler, and a little less humid than Dubai.

FACILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

MarjanResortMövenpickAlIsland

Ras Al Khaimah’s Al Marjan Island was already pretty well-stocked for fancy family-friendly hotels, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from life in the UAE, it’s that you can never have too many. This is lucky considering that Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island opened its huge glass-fronted doors in June of this year. The new five-star resort boasts premium dining outlets (including a new outpost for popular Dubai beach bar Ula), a floating waterpark and a blend of leisure alchemy to satisfy both the ‘adults only’ and the ‘with kids’ camps.

THE ROOMS We stayed in a Panoramic Bridge Junior Suite – comfortably giving our posse of two adults and two little ones enough space to sleep, snack and bounce to a holiday playlist. The rooms are full of neat little detail touches, too – super soft slippers, kitten-themed dressing gowns for the kids, and all rooms have either a terrace or balcony to enjoy those glistening sea views from. If you’re a larger group, it makes sense to look at the beachfront suites – smart duplexes with private pools that can be combined into villas.

THE LOOK AND FEEL Right from the grand entrance hallway that curves into the lobby area, the hotel oozes modern minimalism. Anywhere that’s structurally capable of swapping out walls for panoramic glass windows on the exterior has been given the transparent treatment, flooding the communal areas with a warm, natural glow. The architecture is full of geometric trickery that you can only fully appreciate from certain angles, and the sky bridge-style top floor gives the building immediate character.

THE FOOD AND DRINKS

A chic resort that ticks the entire family’s boxes

In addition to all of the things you’d expect from a resort of this class – a big gym, infinity pool, private beach, spa and a wild collection of watersports – it also has some deal-sweetening extras. Take the floating waterpark for example, essentially an inflatable ninja warrior assault course, and then there are all the family-focused amenities, the children’s pool, outdoor play zone and the Starfish Adventure kid’s club.

There’s an indoor poolside restaurant called the Beach House, with a Cali-Mex menu and a sandy floor, perfect for distracting kids whilst you tackle the homemade veg chip nachos. Boons is a European brasserie trading in live entertainment, giant steaks and a continental feel to the kitchen. We’ve already gushed on our very pleasant thoughts about Ula on WhatsOn.ae, and then there’s Market Kitchen, the jazzy all-day diner, which puts on a brunch-sized spread, three times every day. There’s a daily ‘Chocolate Hour’ in the Möca Lounge, where you can load up on gooey platefuls of the good stuff for free. Neo Sky Bar is due to open this month, which will be Marjan Island’s first and only rooftop lounge.
