While my friends spent their teenage summers packing rucksacks with camping gear, neon paint and Wellington boots to hop between the biggest festivals on the UK circuit, I was happy to bask in ROMO – which means the Relief of Missing Out, a phrase I can thank our deputy editor, Elise, for introducing me to.
It’s not because I don’t love music. I grew up in a house where even the most basic of tasks had a soundtrack and it’s something that’s carried through to my adult life. I take active charge of the radio at work, much to the dismay of my colleagues that sit nearby, and have curated playlists for gym sessions, pre-night out and Sunday morning coffee (the latter my personal favourite). But the wider festival experience – the high probability of rain, lack of showers, overwhelming crowds – was enough to put me off.
But that was before I moved to Dubai, and I was introduced to the UAE’s way of putting on a festival. As well as music festivals covering a whole host of music genres, there’s food festivals, literature festivals – and even fitness festivals. Gourmet delights from homegrown brands, dazzling fireworks displays the final act in a roster of incredible acts, inspiring sessions that provoke thought and discussion… the UAE’s festival scene deserves to be celebrated. Which is exactly what we’re doing from p19.
Speaking of celebrating, this month I’m entering the final year of my twenties, a decade I’ve spent living almost entirely in Dubai. I arrived here in 2015 as a fresh faced graduate with dreams and ambitions superseded only by those of this city. Whether it’s a slew of new restaurants (from p34), a cool new DIFC camp (on p39), or a soaring new attraction (p28), still to this day, Dubai never fails to amaze me at the way it continues to grow.
Enjoy the issue,
I’m currently in the (very slow) process of planning my wedding. It’s daunting, but at least one area – finding my dream dress – has been made easier by the opening of You&I Bridal. A new bridal boutique in Dubai Media City, there are more than 70 dresses to try on, making the process super easy.

We ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, their favourite places, hidden gems, must-have products, local brands they love. This month, we chat to DJ, entrepreneur, TV presenter and certified hype man, Charlie Sloth (@charliesloth). Having moved to Dubai in 2020 to launch his ongoing residency with Five Hotels and Resorts, the British personality shares his tips to making the most of UAE life.
The spot where I love to go to unwind is Souk Madinat Jumeirah. There are some great places to eat along the waterways, and there’s a peaceful and mystical energy about it. Then I like to have a little look around the shops and stalls for some local treats.
Indego by Vineet at Grovesnor House is one of the best Indian restaurants in the world. The food and the service are incredible and I could easily recommend the entire menu. I also love Taverna Greek. Their saganaki is a dish that will leave you wanting more. It’s a simple dish but the way it’s prepared, the love, attention to detail, the marmalade garnish – everything is wow.
My relationship with The Dubai Mall is a very special one. I know everyone in my favourite shops on a first-name basis and it’s always my first port of call when I land back in Dubai.
My favourite local brand is Ounass. I love the two-hour delivery service, and the selection of clothing and brands is second-to-none.
Hands down, my favourite place to stay is Five Jumeirah Village. I love the sky villas; the rooms are insane. For food, you need to look for Soul Street, it’s one of my favourite places to eat in the world. Make sure you try the crunchy gringos and the pad Thai.
It’s that fantastic time of year when the UAE lights up with the sounds and sights of festival fever. Whether you’re a live music fan, a devout foodie, a book worm, or even an old school raver, there is a festival for you coming soon

Dubai isn’t short of impressive attractions and view-spotting opportunities, but we’ve found one that might just take your breath away. The Dubai Balloon is officially taking flight this month, offering thrillseekers a chance to touch the sky from up to 300 metres in the air. Unlike anything seen in the city before, The Dubai Balloon is a helium-inflated tethered balloon.
A unique aviation experience, The Dubai Balloon is strategically placed at the top of Palm Jumeirah in Atlantis Aquaventure, to offer unparalleled vistas of the entire city. During the 10-minute experience, riders are lifted high up into the air and on a clear day, will see out past Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and far beyond.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy the ride, and kids under three go free. For adults, it’s Dhs175 for a regular pass or Dhs75 for children. There’s also a fast pass ticket for priority boarding, which will also get you a complimentary hot or cold beverage in The Dubai Balloon lounge, priced at Dhs275 for adults and Dhs125 for children.
Clair Aichhorn, General Manager of The Dubai Balloon, said: “We are so excited to welcome everyone to try this new bucket-list experience and rise above this beautiful city we call home. I’m extremely proud of this project and the teams that have worked hard to create something spectacular that will reshape the city skyline and enhance Dubai as a destination”.

It is near-impossible to recognise the spot once held by Ronda Locatelli in The Avenues at Atlantis, The Palm. The venue was gutted and reimagined as a South American restaurant, having reopened at the end of 2022.
Now called En Fuego, guests are treated to a lively night of Latin food, cocktails and entertainment.
Much of the team, both front of house and in the kitchen, are South American, ensuring that every detail feels authentic. Equally, a large portion of the decor – which we could spend an entire page talking about alone – was sourced from Colombia during the fit-out. The interiors were conceptualised by Bishop Design and are truly something to marvel at. Everything from drums and trumpets, neon lights, flamingos, a rickshaw and even a car, suspend above us throughout the bar area. A central carousel, complete with an opulent horse, serves up creative cocktails from funky glassware, while the main atrium acts as a stage for performers, as guests on high tables and cosy booths enjoy a front row seat to the show.
An entire section of the menu is dedicated to avocado, offering a whopping six styles of guacamole to choose from. Our pick of the bunch is called ‘you’re everything I avo wanted’ (Dhs85), which features sashimi tuna and marinated tomatoes. Sure, adding tuna to guac is unusual, but we can confirm that it works.
Coco scallop ceviche (Dhs125) is an excellent choice from the raw and marinated section of the menu. It’s fresh and flavourful, with a vibrant punch of chilli and pops of colour thanks to the garnish. Spice fans should opt for the Patagonian prawn tiradito (Dhs125), which brings the heat and will get your tastebuds tingling from the first mouthful.
En Fuego has put much consideration into its entertainment, which is designed to feel impromptu and spontaneous, but just take a look at the number of people in black with clipboards and headsets, and you’ll see that this is a well-considered operation. From flamenco and rumba dancers, a live Mariachi band and a larger-than-life compere, to singers in full
Colombian dress, guests are brought to the streets of Cartagena through music.
From the rotisserie, which can be seen spinning through a large window to the kitchen, we devour the mucho grande beef short ribs (Dhs290), which are slow cooked for several hours before being drizzled in a simple yet flavourful chimichurri. The meat falls apart at the touch of a fork, making each bite tender and tasty.
The dessert menu is a list of traditional South American sweets, from tres leches to churros, flan and flambé. We opt for the banana bomba (Dhs60), which is served in a banana-shaped ceramic sundae glass. Peanut mousse is topped with chocolate granola and caramelised banana, putting a grownup twist on childhood-favourite dessert, the banana split.
We have no doubt that En Fuego will be a hit with the many visitors to Atlantis, The Palm. The vibrant design and authentic food make for a memorable experience for tourists and residents alike.
En Fuego, Atlantis, The Palm, Mon to Fri 5pm to 1am, Sat and Sun 12pm to 1am.

A vibrant and entertaining restaurant with plenty of personality.
While Dubai may favour soaring skyscrapers on most of its skylines, on Palm Jumeirah much of the real estate is low rise. So a rooftop restaurant atop Radisson Resort Palm Jumeirah – a recent addition to the ever-impressive landscape of Palm West Beach – is already in a league of its own.
It’s been occupied by a Mediterraneaninspired restaurant, bar and pool named, somewhat extensively, Tonino Lamborghini Mare Nostrum, which is the first hospitality venture in Dubai from Tonino Lamborghini, the heir to the Lamborghini fortune.
The luxury synonymous with the Lamborghini name translates here into plush sun loungers and cabanas that line an inviting swimming pool on one side, and a chic restaurant in oceanic shades on the other.
The entire space oozes Mediterranean charm with a VIP Dubai touch – stretching views of the Dubai skyline from Ain Dubai to Burj Al Arab are jaw-dropping, a DJ steals the show spinning against a shimmering blue tiled backdrop, and a duo of private jacuzzies that gaze out over West Beach.
Every angle benefits from Instagramworthy Dubai views. For a long, leisurely afternoon that includes tan-topping and grazing through the Mediterranean menu, we pick a cabana one row from the swimming pool. The poolside menu mirrors that of the restaurant, and those that book cabanas also have a table for
two at the end of their bed, making for a smooth dining experience.
We order a half dozen Dibba Bay oysters (Dhs150) that arrive superbly plump on a bed of crushed ice, with two wedges of lemon and a zesty vinaigrette. A citrus tuna tartare (Dhs85) is well-presented and fresh, although the tuna is diced so finely that the consistency isn’t quite as dense as we’d like, especially when you add a squeeze of juicy grapefruit. A char-grilled lobster salad (Dhs165) arrives as a perfectly grilled half Omani lobster, its meat pulling effortlessly from the shell, alongside a salad of baby gem, avocado and apple, dressed generously in herb and sour cream.
Mains are impressive and in hindsight one would have been plenty to share. A rack of lamb (Dhs265) arrives perfectly pink and tender, with an anchovy salsa and roasted vine tomatoes. And you’ll want to order a portion of crispy truffle fries (Dhs45) to go with it. For feeling like you’re dining on the Italian coast, a metal dish filled with fresh seafood and homemade al
dente gemelli pasta (Dhs195) in a simple tomato and fresh parsley sauce lets the simple flavours sing.
Dessert can be as naughty or nice as you like, with seasonal exotic fruits (Dhs75) a light way to conclude. Another portion that’s plenty for two, a sweet and creamy pavlova (Dhs65) with a zesty berry coulis and airy whipped cream topping, is an indulgent final note to a tasty Mediterranean meal.
The elevated pool experience extends beyond the setting to the service, with health juice shots, ice lollies and cold towels offered in regular rotation to guests basking in the sunshine. Here guests linger the longest, many soaking up the sun and sounds of the lively DJ sets, which are only amplified when the sun sets.

Studio One Hotel welcomes a new neighbourhood eatery
After the closure of The Void in Studio One Hotel, we were excited to hear that there would be a third outpost of Aprons and Hammers taking its spot. A word of warning: the venue is open at the sides, so dress appropriately. We enter the terraced restaurant and much to our delight, heaters are placed around the venue, filling it with warmth.
The space itself is light and welcoming, with Aprons and Hammers’ signature blue and orange accents throughout the design. Light wood furniture is paired with comfortable outdoor deck chairs that give the restaurant a coastal vibe. Murals of the USA line the walls, as a nod to the origin of the restaurant’s produce.
The menu is casual and made for sharing. We start with the firecracker prawns (Dhs84), chicken wings (Dhs73) and salt and pepper squid (Dhs73) upon
the waiter’s recommendation.
The firecracker prawns aren’t extremely spicy but do have good kick while the chicken wings and salt and pepper squid are also both perfectly seasoned.
We decide to go sharing style for the main courses, which, in keeping with Aprons and Hammer’s signature offering, consist of various types of seafood.
The small bucket of shrimp (Dhs220) combined with a sauce of our choice (we select lemon butter) are on-point, and the sauce drizzled over creates an even better experience. We delight in the lobster platter (Dhs298), and even go one step further with a side of lobster truffle mac ‘n’ cheese (Dhs108) – a highlight of the evening.
When the old bay crab boil (Dhs264) arrives, we’re treated to tender and juicy crab, crunchy corn on the cob and seasoned potatoes all thrown into one big pot. The accompanying selection of mussels, clams, and yet more prawns round out the evening of full crustacean delight.
Aprons and Hammers
We’re pleasantly surprised by the sizzling apple pie (Dhs54) and the ‘hammer time’ cake (Dhs76). Both desserts are sweet as can be and have pouring theatrics for our added entertainment. The ‘hammer time’ cake suitably features a mallet for guests to crack the chocolate coating to reveal a pouring cream that complements the sweet chocolate cake.

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:
Expect rooftop views, pan-Asian cuisine and vibrant entertainment...
There’s no such thing as too many brunches. Especially in Dubai. But with so many options available it can be hard to narrow down the perfect spot. Brand-new rooftop restaurant, Attiko, is brought to us from the team behind iconic Dubai venues including SushiSamba, Aura Skypool, and Drift.
From the moment we walk in, we’re on a high – literally. Located on the 31st floor of W Dubai – Mina Seyahi, the space is finished with floorto-ceiling windows overlooking Palm Jumeirah and the Arabian Gulf.
Attiko’s Sky Brunch takes place on Saturdays from 2pm to 5pm. On this particular Saturday, the weather was cloudy and rainy, so we opt for an indoor table pressed right up next to the window. Despite the weather, our table provides a nextlevel experience as we were able to watch the rain fall and take in the city views. A party brunch this is not, but we really enjoyed the chilled, laidback atmosphere of the restaurant compared with other, more wild brunches. The sharing-style starters include edamame, shrimp tempura, tuna carpaccio, Asian Caesar salad, beef tataki with fresh truffle, and crispy cauliflower
with cucumber and avocado maki. Each dish was well-executed and full of flavour. The beef tataki is a standout dish, elevated by the addition of fresh truffle and crunchy garlic, as well as the crispy cauliflower, served on a bed of crunchy vegetarian maki, which we devoured in no time. We were given space to relax and take in the rhythms of a live drummer, before moving on to the main course. Guests are given the option to choose one dish from the menu. We order the chicken served with shitake mushrooms and asparagus, and the sea bass white miso and beetroot, both of which are sublime.
The dessert platter is filled with a variety of lighter options such as fresh fruit and mochi, plus indulgent treats like passion fruit cheesecake, chocolate cake, and a beautifully sweet ice cream.
W Dubai – Mina Seyahi, Dubai Marina. Sat, 2pm to 5pm. Dhs295 soft, Dhs395 house, Dhs545 sparkling, Dhs695 Champagne.

A fully rounded brunch experience with standout food, breath-taking views, excellent service, and great value for money.
With the last few weeks of cooler weather still left to enjoy, you’re most likely packing your calendar with outdoor events and activities to make the most of it. But your winter experience won’t be complete without paying a visit to Salt Camp.
Located in DIFC, the beloved homegrown pop-up is back for a fourth edition, setting up camp behind the stunning Museum of the Future adorned in a shade of bright pink.
The venue pays homage to traditional Bedouin camping. Since it’s set in the heart of the city, it is not traditionally a Bedouin site and you will be reminded by the ‘This is Not Camp’ notices posted around the venue, but the experience will transport you to the Arabian desert.
Visitors are encouraged to kick off your shoes and dig your feet in the sand as you take a seat at low pink patterned sofas
or deck chairs. You might even spot camels draped in pink and silver bling walking past to really push Salt’s brand colours.
As a beautiful reminder that you are still in the city, you have a prime view of the iconic Museum of the Future. Stay until late to watch the calligraphy on the world’s most beautiful building shine bright against the night sky.
At Salt, it’s all about the food so not only will the colourful venue look good on the ‘Gram, but it will also be a treat for your belly, too.
Savoury fans can pick from Salt’s signature burgers with delicious chicken, steak and wagyu options available. Sharing dishes include several styles of fries, salad, and popcorn chicken.
It’s not all about the salt though, as sweet treat fans can also satisfy their palate with a soft serve or refreshing drink. If you’re bringing the little ones, there are ‘little camper’ treats for them to enjoy. For entertainment, you can dance to live music and DJs or be wowed by street performers from unicyclists to jugglers, and dancers.
As always, Salt-branded merchandise from t-shirts to bright coloured tracksuits, and socks can be purchased from the gift shop. The pop-up runs until March 22, and you can follow their colourful posts on Instagram for all the updates.

When you live in a city like Dubai, stunning views become part and parcel of your dining experience. One hotspot that is guaranteed not to disappoint is the newly opened CouCou, perched 52 stories high on the top floor of The Palm Tower, where you’ll also find The View at The Palm.
The half-glass walls ensure spoil-free views of the mesmerising Palm, Dubai
Marina and Bluewaters Island. We pick a table next to the glass wall, away from the lounges, booths and bustling bar and allow the views to entertain us all night.
The signature cocktail menu is unavailable, so we start the evening with an espresso martini, and an old fashioned with a twist, which is strong and spicy in flavour. We loved most of the appetisers, but our favourite was the fried king crab Louie salad (Dhs195) – a refreshingly tangy and creamy salad.
A medley of flavours came with the truffle tuna tartare with yuzu (Dhs125), which surprised us with a fruity taste, and the escargot (Dhs95) on toast was well presented but overpowered by butter.
For a hint of spice, we highly recommend the prawn with rosemary
(Dhs120), while the burrata (Dhs115) with homemade pesto and cherry tomatoes is creamy and big enough to share. For mains, we give into temptation and indulge in the timeless truffle pizza (Dhs250), which was super creamy and had a generous portion of truffle shavings. Onto desserts, the reversed tiramisu (Dhs140) caught our attention. A dome of mascarpone cheese arrived surrounding a light sponge cake, but we were left looking for the coffee flavour punch to balance the sweetness. Our favourite dessert of the evening, tarte tatin (Dhs115), is an apple pie filling encased in a crispy and light choux pastry.
As the night progressed and the table cleared, we find it hard to leave, but with more of their signature cocktails to try, there’s no doubt that we will return.

A special spot high up on The Palm that will leave you with plenty of memories.
Dubai-based Irish artist, Anna McKeown is better known by pseudonym, Pop and Toast. You might recognise her pretty colour-splattered Champagne bottles, which have likely been popping up on your Instagram feed.
From what started out as a hobby, now earns McKeown a living, as the former art teacher receives commissions from private collectors, and even restaurants who adore her work.
“I have always had a passion for art from an early age, and I only ever saw myself working in a creative career –such as interior design, teaching, curation, consultancy or an artist,” McKeown tells us.
Before becoming a full-time artist, she studied fine art and art history and worked alongside pioneering artists around the world – many of whom have influenced her and paved her creative journey.
Her favourite art movement is abstract expressionism, which was developed in New York City in the 1950s. She gives credit to Jackson Pollock, a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement for her signature abstract painting style of splashes and neon undertones.
She added: “My style and art practice are heavily influenced by my appreciation of fashion, popular culture and interiors – and I am finally starting to be able to bridge these specialisms and work between all three areas”.
Her Champagne bottle pieces “have become very popular and are very much a key component of my brand. However, I love working on portraiture –especially the female figure, imagery from historical fashion shoots and magazines have been an influence of mine in the past,” she shares.
Speaking on her creative process, McKeown tells us: “The actual process of painting, my use of colour, the fluidity of the paint, the energy that I exert and the solitary nature of my practice, is the central driving force behind my work”.
McKeown works with a range of mediums, but most importantly she loves to explore and experiment. Her main medium is oil paints, which will always remain a constant in her practice, and in a bid to diversify, she also released a collection of NFTs last year – all of which sold out in 24 hours.
Outside of her colourful art world, McKeown is a keen yoga and Pilates practitioner. She enjoys rising early when the world is asleep and soaking in the silence during her walks on the beach.
McKeown has a number of projects coming up this year, including exhibitions across the UAE and the UK. She states that her main goal is to showcase her work in more galleries across Dubai, Europe and the UK.
Anna McKeownBesides creating works of art for private commissions, she will also be working with several prestigious food and beverage companies and creating artwork for several new projects. She’s very much looking forward to it, and so are we.

1. Since it opened in 2008, the show was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning Best Costume Design.
2. The musical’s score is a pastiche of many different styles of music and includes elements of pop, rock, gospel, R&B, and country.
3. The name ‘Shrek’ is derived from ‘Shrek Lekh’ in Yiddish, which means awful or terrible and ‘Schrecklich’ in German, which means dreadful.
We often hear the terms ‘shepreneur’, ‘girl boss’ and ‘female founder’ thrown around as though women succeeding in the business space is some kind of wavering trend. But the truth of the matter is that women are smashing the entrepreneurial scene, particularly in the UAE. In order to nourish this growth, a female focused co-working space, called The Bureau, has opened in Dubai.
The Bureau is a purposebuilt co-working space located in Gold & Diamond Park, complete with private offices, meeting rooms, as well as a podcast studio, in-house gym and Jones the Grocer café. The concept was co-founded by Dubai born and raised sisters, Nikita and Rhea Patel, who wanted to build communities of people that believe in life-long learning, sharing experiences, and supporting one another.
Both members and non-members can make use of NAŌ, a fitness and mindfulness studio which stands for ‘nurture, awareness, open’. As The Bureau preaches the importance of moving our bodies, connecting with ourselves, and the integration of mind, body and soul, visitors can expect a variety of classes from barre and Pilates to yoga and meditation.
The Bureau also places a large emphasis on building its
community through an array of events and mentorship programmes. Regular talks cover a range of topics such as financial empowerment, women’s mental and physical health and a taboo talks series. A monthly ‘needs and leads’ event aims to take the legwork out of problem-solving, by connecting entrepreneurs with a problem to those with a solution. Or, if you’re searching for your perfect match to help you execute your business idea, check out one of the co-
founder speed dating sessions. The Bureau has monthly and annual membership plans, short and long-term private office rentals, student plans and social memberships. All visitors can opt for day pass options, which start at Dhs120, while the co-working monthly membership starts at Dhs950 and the private office rentals starting from Dhs3,000. As the lines between technology and real life continue to blur into one, creative entrepreneurs are coming up with new ideas to give people a taste of life in the metaverse. Dubai’s new attraction, Aya, transports visitors into a futuristic universe through the magic of art and technology. Without the need for an AR headset, you’ll get the feeling of being in a video game.
Across 12 zones and 40,000 square feet, visitors explore different universes, each more imaginative than the next. The journey begins by entering the world of Aurora, followed by The Source, Drift, Outland and The Pool zones. Cosmic stars, pools, lush hills and waterfalls can be found in The River zone, while The Falls, Celestia, Flora, Tides and Harmonia complete the experience.
Found in Wafi Mall, Aya’s entrance looks like a chic café, but walk through the LED tunnel and a different world awaits. Before you go thinking this is just another built-for-Instagram #influencersinthewild attraction – think again. Yes, you’ll see the aesthetically pleasing space all over your feed, but Aya is so much more than a photo op. In Drift, for example, visitors are encouraged to sit or lie on the raised bumpy flooring, feel the gentle vibrations run through them and stare up into the kaleidoscopic ceiling until they start to feel a sense of weightlessness. Outland uses clever skeletal tracking and projection mapping to project your own avatar on the screen, which will follow your movements as you make them. Our personal favourite zones include Tides; an endlessly mirrored room with LED totems and an interactive monolith, where a series of four shows total to an eight-minute experience, and Flora; an
indoor LED garden surrounding a bioluminescent tree, which reacts to a thunderstorm halfway through the room’s nine-minute show. While each room is programmed to a looped ‘show’, there’s freedom for guests to stay in each room for as little or as long as they like, passing through the zones at their own pace. The attraction is designed and managed by Hyperspace, a Future Forward Entertainment company that builds and operates physical parks for a digital world. Alexander Heller, CEO of Hyperspace, said:
“We chose Dubai as the destination for Aya – our first immersive entertainment park – as it is a city invested in future-culture, with a demanding and digitally active tourist and resident market. Aya has been designed to evoke wonder and awe in an out-of-this-world trip to a beautiful universe that will light up social media feeds everywhere.”

In 2022, actor, comedian, author, podcaster, entrepreneur and the scissors to Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Rock’, Kevin Hart, added another professional title to his already farcically long CV, when he was appointed as ‘Chief Island Officer’ for Yas Island Abu Dhabi.
Hart was essentially an ambassador for the island, appearing in videos living his very best life across Yas’ collection of leisure attractions. So it’s fitting then, that his next Middle East comedy show will be right in the ‘hart’ of his ambassadorial feifdom, Etihad Arena on Yas Island. Live Nation is in charge of bringing the icon-tier stand-up back to the island, for the only Gulf date of his Reality Check tour. The gig will go down on Wednesday February 22 and tickets are on sale from Dhs499.
You’re probably familiar with his comic roles in Hollywood, movies such as Scary Movie 3, the 2017 Jumanji reboot franchise, Ride Along, Get Hard, as well as providing voice support in animated films such as DC League of Super-Pets, The Secret Life of Pets and Captain Underpants, or any one of the number of team-ups with The Rock.
You may recognise his contortive features and hilarious raconteur monologuing from his stratospheric stand-up career, Netflix specials and comedy albums, or from taunting pal Dwayne Johnson with TikTok skits, Rock-inspired fancy dress, and eyebrow-raising impressions.
He’s a regular on podcasts and comedy shows, he’s anchored awards ceremonies, provided MC support for global events, he’s modeled for
Macy’s, launched a vegetarian restaurant (Hart House) and fronted charity drives. But regardless of where you know Kevin Hart from, it is practically impossible to see him as anything other than one of the comedic genre’s most precious international treasures. The Kevin Hart gig will be the last of an epic A-list comedian trilogy at Etihad Arena in Q1 of 2023, with two British acts, Jimmy Carr and Kevin Bridges having already warmed the boards in January.

It’s hard to resist the subconscious urge of ageist prejudice after learning that at 80, Harrison Ford is reprising his iconic action-archeologist role, Indiana Jones, for one last crack of the whip. He might not be as spritely, but the trailer teases that same pedigree of swashbuckling, snake-phobic, artefact-chasing, map-hopping, humour-laced adventuring that’s often been imitated over the past four decades, but never replicated. And an inestimably large part of its charm over that tenure has been Ford’s glint-eyed screen charisma. Of course he has his sidekicks along for the ride, this fifth chapter of the story sees the return of long-time pal and Fez enthusiast Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays Indy’s Goddaughter Helena, Mads Mikkelsen also appears (presumably as arch baddy) and Antonio Banderas is also named in the cast list. We’re looking forward to it, as long as there aren’t any snakes, we hate snakes.

Disney’s live action presents this enchanting tale of a young fish girl living ‘under the sea’, who is so besotted with the strapping young Prince and human life that she makes a Faustian bargain with a scheming sea witch, for a shot at true love with a mouth-breather. These real world Disney reboots have enjoyed a pretty consistent approval rating so things are looking up for Ariel (played by Halle Bailey). We also have the delicious Neptunetier casting prospects of placing Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) and King Triton (Javier Bardem). We hope it finds its voice because it really feels like it deserves to be ‘part of your world’.

This film has all the right periodic elements for a truly explosive release. Directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role and a based-on-a-real-storyline that follows the ethically-fraught series of events behind the Manhattan Project, the race to master nuclear fission and “become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. After shaking the atomic genie out of the bottle, Oppenheimer famously spent the rest of his days lobbying against its use, and we couldn’t think of a better pairing (Nolan and Murphy) to smash that sort of internal conflict nucleus apart. If all this wasn’t enough to send your expectations into an anticipatory mushroom cloud, there’s also the prospect that rather than using CGI to recreate the famous Trinity Test — Nolan, opted for a real explosion. Just not with uranium right Chris? Right Chris? Either way, literally zero chance that this will flop at the box office.

Take yourself back to 10 years ago. Now sit down in a studio executive’s chair and consider how you might feel if we pitched to you the idea of a romantic comedy loosely based around the imagined life of popular Mattel toy, Barbie. You’d likely march us straight out of that door, screaming something incoherent and unflattering about G.I. Joe. Snap back to today, with several big Lego movies still looming large in the rearview mirror, it seems dramatically less of a gamble. Especially when you have Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) directing and a cast that includes Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, and support from Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon and Helen Mirren.

This isn’t a true movie adaption of the popular Sony game, though it shares some of the same DNA. It can’t be. The game doesn’t have a plotline and whilst you may argue that might actually have improved the Assassin’s Creed movie, we wouldn’t dare comment. This film tells the miraculous real life story of Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster, who was recruited into a racing academy on a gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) and the cast list includes David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou, Josha Stradowski and Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Horner.

Set 64 years before the Katniss-led Hunger Games trilogy, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes tells the story of the 10th edition of the last-tribute-standing stab-off. Like the originals, it’s based on a book by Suzanne Collins — so the source material foundations at least are reliably solid. The events centre around a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), the antagonist in the last series. Ambitious, sneaky but far from the sociopath you revel in despising during his autumn years – he’s tasked with tutoring a young (trigger warning) District 12 tribute by the name of Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). Expect the sort of series of events that embitter a man to walk a path of aspirational villainy.

Adam Driver has worked pretty hard to carve out a career where he rarely picks up similar sorts of roles, but here — his turn as Enzo Ferrari, marks his second chomp on the iconic Italian designer truffle (the first being Maurizio Gucci in House of Gucci, 2021). This biopic provides an autopsy on a pivotal period of the life of the famous racing driver and subsequent supercar conceiver. On the verge of financial ruin, and in wheel spin of personal turmoil, Ferrari decides to put it all on red and lead the House of Horse to some particularly risky waters.
If you’re still exhibiting mild PTSD from watching either of the big screen adaptions of Roald Dhal’s customarily dark kid’s book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, you’re in good company. Someone need only mention the word ‘Oompa-Loompa’ and we’re hurled into a dizzy fog of flashbacks — horrendous factory accidents, including children being sucked into waste valves in a Squid Gamesian furore. Wonka, examines the origin story to the character that headed up this Candyland Gulag – before the ensuing “where the blame” lawsuits. What sort of experiences build a man that metes out sadistic punishments for parent-enabled character flaws in minors? To answer that, it’s Timothée Chalamet who’s leading us on this cane-twirling jaunt of Willy Wonka — the formative years.

Six courts, two kids’ courts and a new restaurant led by Hattem Mattar…
As padel clubs sprout up all over the city to meet demand, none have been as Instagram-worthy as boutique padel venue, Matcha Club. The original opened in late 2021, completely changing the aesthetics of padel playing in the UAE.
The design-led club – with its terracotta courts, burnt-orange fencing and cool Palm Springs vibe – swiftly became the city’s iconic wellness lifestyle hub. The place to be for sweatband-ready padel players, wellness enthusiasts and alo-clad yogis as well as digital nomads and stylish young families looking for an airy and nourishing meal at its slick Japanese-French eatery, Nette.
Following its success in the city centre, Matcha now has a new place for the shiny, happy Dubai contingent to gather with the launch of its second wellness club at Meydan.
“When we began looking at expansion, Meydan was one of our first choices, as we
love this district and its close connection to the desert”, explains owner Othmane Mekouar. “It’s also undergoing a lot of development with a string of exciting residential projects in the pipeline. And even though the clubs are only 10 minutes
apart from each other, they provide two very distinct impressions.”
Staying true to its design-led roots, Matcha Meydan covers a whopping 9,000 square metres, and encompasses a stylish Mediterranean aesthetic with its slick courts punctuated by huge olive trees and sprawling fauna. But don’t expect a carbon copy of the Al Quoz branch. “The idea with Matcha Meydan was to create a completely different client experience but keep the main values that people have come to love from our club,” continues Mekouar. “The architectural experience, attention to design and details, and the immersive landscape, it’s all there at Matcha Meydan even though the colour palette and landscape are different.”
Featuring six padel courts for adults, the new Matcha Meydan branch is also putting a heavy emphasis on grassroots padel with two smaller courts dedicated to children and kids’ classes.
Rounding out the facilities, the club’s new restaurant Fiya is a special collaboration between healthy pizza brand Pinza and the UAE’s main pitmaster, the legendary Hattem Mattar. Could firelicked flatbreads be on the cards at Matcha Meydan? Here’s hoping…
Matcha Meydan opens daily from 6am to midnight. Tel: (050) 340 5979.

Start training early Give yourself plenty of time to build up your endurance and strength. Follow a structured training plan. A training plan can help you stay on track and ensure that you are properly preparing for the marathon.
Incorporate strength training and stretching into your routine Strong muscles and flexible joints will help you run more efficiently and reduce your risk of injury.
It is important to drink plenty of water, especially if the weather conditions turn hot and humid on the day.
Wear appropriate clothing
The 22nd edition of the Dubai Marathon takes place on February 12, and after a threeyear hiatus, runners are gearing up for its return. For the first time in the event’s history the race will be held on a Sunday, in line with the updated weekend, which came into effect at the start of 2022. The race will start and finish close to Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah.
Dubai Marathon is recognised as one of the fastest distance races in international road racing, attracting elite athletes from around the world. Race organisers are looking forward to welcoming runners of all abilities, ages and nationalities for the marathon and the associated 10km road race and 4km fun run.
“The feedback from the industry is that competitors are eager to join us on the start line on February 12,” said
Peter Connerton, Managing Director of Pace Events, organisers and promoters of the Dubai Marathon.
“The world has changed considerably since we last staged the event in the weeks before the global pandemic but the appetite for running and fitness remains healthy,” he concluded.
To register for any of the races visit dubaimarathon.org
Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing to help you stay cool and comfortable during the race.
It is important to start the race at a pace that you can maintain throughout the entire marathon. Don’t try to go out too fast at the beginning, or you may risk hitting the “wall” later in the race.
Stay positive
Marathon running can be challenging but try to stay positive and focus on your goal. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family and remind yourself why you are running the marathon.
While ice baths – or cold-water immersion – were once reserved for professional athletes aiming to push their body past its limit, they have become much more popular in recent years.
The more we have learned about their ability to improve performance and benefit your health (by releasing stress hormones and helping reduce tension), the more people have been willing to give them a go. This has been especially true in Dubai, a city that has seen ice bath sessions pop up in gyms, padel courts, and back gardens.
In 2020, Dani Afioni opened Longevity Sports in Al Quoz offering next-level cold water immersion therapy using technology-led ice-less baths that rapidly cools water to an Arctic five degrees Celsius.
And now, in an effort to make ice bath experiences even more extreme and efficient, Longevity Sports has launched ‘The Beast’. Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on the world’s first mobile ice bath, bringing cold water therapy
right to your front door, much to the amusement of your neighbours. Inside the truck are four deep cylindrical tubs filled with freezing cold water, which you and your pals will plunge into and sit in for up to 15 mind- and bodynumbing minutes. For newbies, the experience can be nerve-wracking. The shock of the cold water on your body can literally take your breath away, and fight or flight mode kicks in almost instantaneously. But while it is freezing cold, it’s also unbelievably invigorating and after a few minutes you’ll start to feel a lot calmer and more comfortable. By the time you clamber out of the tub, and wobble down from the truck, you barely feel the cold anymore,
just a little numb but extremely energised. It’s no wonder why so many residents have become addicted to these sessions.
The Beast is now ready and raring to tour around neighbourhoods in the UAE. You can book a one-hour session for Dhs580, four hours for Dhs1,720 or hire it for the full day from Dhs2,250. Longevity Sports, Dubai. Tel: (054) 565 6021. longevity-sports.com

Lebanon may be famous for many things, but food is arguably its greatest draw. Sure, its winter and skiing season is in full throttle but give us some kibbeh mishwieh and spicy makanek any day of the week. Here’s our guide the best foodie spots...
Aculinary tour of Lebanon should take in as many corners of the country as possible, but start in Beirut. Nobody really needs an introduction to the Lebanese capital, with its sometimes-intoxicating mix of hedonism, glamour, chaos and danger, but where to eat? Well, head to Tawlet in Mar Mikhael and Liza Beirut in Achrafieh. Both offer traditional Lebanese dishes to die for but come at them from different angles.
At Tawlet, the farmer’s kitchen of Souk el Tayeb, the restaurant’s continuously changing menu, rotation of cooks, and championing of small-scale producers means dishes are regional, seasonal and simple. The last time What’s On visited, we ate everything from massaee’t batenjeen (an aubergine and tomato dish) to bayd
bil fokhara (eggs cooked in a clay dish). The main dining area includes a long communal table and if you’re lucky you might spot Souk el Tayeb’s founder, Kamal Mouzawak, mingling with diners and enjoying the true taste of Lebanese home cooking.
At Liza Beirut, there’s a similar dedication to craft and tradition, although with a twist. Founded by restaurateur, Liza Asseily, and her husband Ziad, the dishes are fresh, light, generous and bursting with flavour – but just as important, is the restaurant’s location. Occupying the second floor of a former 19th century palace, Liza Beirut is something to behold. Even if you’re not a foodie, go for the decor. There are stunning Ottoman-style windows, ceramic cityscapes by Marilyn Massoud and Rasha Nawam, and wallpaper designed by Idarica Gazzoni. It’s arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in Beirut.
When you’re done, head south to Tyre (called Sour in Arabic), where you’ll not only be treated to the Old City’s narrow cobbled lanes, brightly coloured houses, courtyard gardens, boutique hotels and beautiful shuttered windows, but some of the best street food in Lebanon. Take Mahfouz, for example. Essentially a sandwich shop, its speciality is fatayel – beef filets cut into small, mince-like pieces and then fried and served in Arabic bread with tarator and tomatoes. Chicken and makanek (a small, pan-fried beef sausage) versions are also available, but it’s the fatayel that’s the winner. Located in the Old Souk, it’s takeaway only, so probably best to take a few with you for the road.
Another Tyre institution is Baroud. Also situated in the Old Souk, it opens at the crack of dawn. A morning spot only, it serves traditional Lebanese breakfasts with zero pretension and maximum taste. The menu is limited – foul, hummus with tahini, or msabbaha (hot chickpeas with tahini, crushed garlic, lemon juice, cumin, and salt) – but delightful. With plastic chairs and only a handful of tables, don’t go expecting five-star luxury. When you’re done, go and enjoy the splendour of Tyre, with its dizzying array of Roman and Byzantine ruins and glorious beaches.
Wherever you go next, you’ll be in for a treat. If you drive east through Bikfaya and Bteghrine, past Wadi al-Jamajem (the Valley of the Skulls) and on towards Mount Sannine, you’ll eventually reach Baskinta. On the outskirts of the town, set back from the main road down a short track, is a small bakery run by husband and wife, Krikor and Laure.
Perched peacefully on the side of a steep valley, in the spring and summer months their home is sprinkled with the harvests of rural endeavour: bowls of thyme and herbal tea; olives and tomatoes; cucumbers and courgettes; mint and parsley; even walnuts and aubergines. Somewhere down the hill you’ll see chickens and their freshly laid eggs.
The bakery itself is humble, with low ceilings and an oven that can only fit two manakeesh at a time. There is a long wooden board on which dough – handmade in the early hours of the morning – is rolled into ovals and smothered with ingredients. When we visit, one is topped with three types of cheese (akkawi, kashkawan and mozzarella), another with homemade zaatar. Then there’s bayd w awarma, a calorie-ladened masterpiece topped with cheese, eggs and lamb confit, which sits confidently in the centre of the large aluminium tray. There is labneh w awarma, too, and bowls of olives and freshly chopped tomatoes. It’s the best manakeesh you’ll ever have – all served with the fullness of Lebanese generosity.
If you’re feeling flush and love the glamour of Golden Age Beirut, there’s only one place you can stay – the Phoenicia. The hotel looms large in the imagination and is all delicately perforated façades and shimmering blue and turquoise tiles. Zaitunay Bay is a stone’s throw away and the hotel’s interior is a fascinating mix of the luxurious and the ostentatious. Originally opened in 1961, the hotel was only reopened in October last year following two years of closure in the wake of the Beirut blast. It’s return to life created quite a buzz and signified a return to better times for Lebanon’s tourism industry, although the country remains deeply entrenched in a crippling financial crisis.

This unique getaway can be found a little way off the beaten track. In Dubai Heritage Vision, Terra Solis is the brainchild of the group behind one of the biggest music festivals in the world, Tomorrowland. With very little around it, Terra Solis is the perfect desert destination for those who are looking to escape the city, but not leave behind a sense of luxury and fun. The venue is only open to adults aged 21 years and over, so guests can enjoy a weekend of ultimate relaxation.
Driving up to the venue feels like you’re on a desert safari, complete with camelspotting opportunities. Upon entering, the pool is welcoming, and the exterior of the venue has a traditionally Arabian feel. The resort blends into its sandy surroundings
perfectly and the rooms spread out into the desert landscape give the experience an adventurous edge.
We stayed in the Perseid lodge which comes equipped with an en-suite bathroom, and a king size bed with pillows that had just the right amount of weight. The room has a minimalistic feel to it with white linen and concrete floors. Wooden accents and black hardware in the bathrooms are sleek and modern, with a walk-in shower. Other options include the Polaris tents, and the ultra-VIP Orian lodges. All of the room categories include breakfast, as well as access to the facilities and a sun lounger by the pool.
The main goal of Terra Solis is for you to relax and rejuvenate, with rooms surrounding the vibrant but relaxing pool
area. It is the main allure of the destination. There are sunbeds and cabanas available for rent for those looking for a daycation. There is also a DJ on the decks at the pool playing energetic beats throughout the day.
Poolside, there is a small menu to choose from that features everything from crudites (Dhs45) to short rib sliders (Dhs90) as well as an array of refreshing drinks. We enjoyed the Sala Fizz (Dhs70), which is a gin-based drink that was light and refreshing. Breakfast is served near the pool at Mesa and consists of a selection of sharing dishes and a range of drinks. We shared a Bedouin salad and avocado scramble, which were both delicious and a delightful way to finish off the stay.
A one-night stay in the Perseid lodge for two adults, which is inclusive of breakfast, sun loungers and all the facilities, costs approx. Dhs3,128 inclusive of all taxes.
