EDITOR’S LETTER

THERE ARE NO JANUARY BLUES HERE.

In fact, I love January. The newness it symbolises. The optimism. The opportunity. The first of twelve months with endless possibilities. It might be a cliché, but I take the new year, new me attitude very seriously.

What I don’t take too seriously is New Year’s resolutions. I still bite my nails, speak only a handful of words in Arabic, and never continue journaling past the middle of Jan, despite these being top of my resolutions list year in, year out. But I hope to change that this year. So I’m holding myself – and the rest of Team What’s On – accountable for our New Year’s resolutions, by penning them for all to see on p9.

But enough about me, this issue is all about you. Because there’s no better time than January for a little self-improvement. Maybe you want to eat clean after an indulgent Christmas, or your 2023 focus is to learn a new skill, or perhaps you’re making your mental health a priority this year. Whatever your goals, from p15 prepare to get inspired with everything from fun fitness and homegrown beauty to the latest in wellness and innovative classes to help you upskill. This issue is all about encouraging us all to be the best versions of ourselves in 2023.

Another pledge I’m making this year, more of a conscious decision than a resolution, is to shop local. I’m ending my long-term relationship with Amazon in favour of discovering homegrown businesses. There really has never been a better time to discover small local brands, and I’m cheerleading them all the way. Join me on p42.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Stop (unhealthy) snacking

I’m a serial snacker. Whether I’m hungry, bored or stressed, I turn to snacking, typically of the chocolate variety. In 2023, I’m promising to say goodbye to inhaling sharing bags of Malteasers as an afternoon pick-meup. Or I’m going to try, at least.

Master pizza-making

I got a pizza oven at the end of 2022, and I realise this is already starting to sound like an anti-resolution. In 2023, it’s mission: crust or bust. I’m committed to coming up with the best backyard pizza in the whole of the UAE. Unstoppable toppings, immoveable sauce, and I’m all about the base. And no pineapple.

Be more present

While New Year’s resolutions have become synonymous with cheesy ‘new year, new me’ Instagram captions, I relish in the idea of new beginnings. I have no interest in the gym, but this year I’d like to practice being more present. At home, at work, and when I’m out. This means enjoying every moment without distraction, or worrying about the long to-do list.

Become a morning person

I have never – and I mean never – been a morning person. I remember my mum telling stories of me as a baby, with my eyes wide open well-past midnight. Waking up early every morning to be in the office on time is a struggle. So, as of January 1, you’ll find me trying to catch the worm.

Stick to a gym routine

Ok, it’s not the most original idea in January but I really do need to get my gym routine in check. The first few weeks are the hardest, but once I get into it, I know I’ll be determined to keep it up. After a very busy end to 2022, my goal is to cut back on going out so much and become more disciplined to get up early and in the gym each morning.

Learn Arabic

Being born and raised here in Dubai, it is very embarrassing to admit that I still can’t speak Arabic. So, this year I am determined to learn the language. I’m starting with the Duolingo app, but I also plan to watch plenty of Arabic movies and YouTube videos. This is one resolution I really want to stick to.

Take up beach volleyball

All my previous New Year’s resolutions have been ridiculously cliché, and this year is no exception. This year, I’ve decided to start a new hobby. For months I’ve been telling my mother that I’m starting beach volleyball, but I’ve lacked the motivation. But in January, I’m determined to live up to the cliché of new beginnings and become the beach volleyball girl I know I can be.

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Natalia Shustova

Each month, we ask Dubai residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes. Their favourite places, hidden gems, must-have products and local brands they love. This month, we chat to artist, creative entrepreneur and self-proclaimed ‘flower fairy’ of popular multi-disciplinary luxury brand Gosha, Natalia Shustova (@shoestova). Having moved to Dubai in 2006, the Belarus-born, Siberia-raised entrepreneur shares her tips to making the most of UAE life.

I have so many and it’s difficult for me to choose just one. Some of my forever favourites include Mrs. Keepa (@mrskeepaofficial), Reemami (@reemamiofficial), Dima Ayad (@dimaayad, above), Bil Arabi (@bilarabi), Bouguessa (@bouguessa), and Rami Al Ali (@ramialaliofficial).

As I’m not a foodie, for me going to a restaurant is all about the experience – not just the food. Everything matters, from the music to the lights and crowd. Zuma (@zumadubai), which offers contemporary Japanese cuisine, is the one for a fun dinner with friends. We always have the best time, plus the food is consistently great.

I don’t drink alcohol, so I just have sparkling water with ice. The best spot though is always my garden with a group of friends.

I love Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai. From all-white-everything to the truly most azure and lively beach in Dubai. I stay in the property at least twice a year and it’s my go-to pool escape during the summer months.

MINUTES WITH DENIS MURPHY

Denis Murphy is the co-founder of RoundTable Global and a highperformance coach. He helps people reach new levels of freedom, honesty, happiness, success, and optimal performance, by recovering from a ‘blame addiction’. His direct and honest approach to overcoming blame and its influence on our mental and physical health, as well as on our levels of performance and success, has led him to become a leading expert in the subject.

What are your quick tips for living an optimal life?

More than ever, people crave honesty not positivity. The current advice to get better at selfcontrol and being fake positive not only requires a lot of energy to sustain, but it teaches us to lie to ourselves (and others). This energy and focus would be better directed to learning the skill of listening to our mind and body, rather than trying to control and defeat it.

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about health?

How our mental, emotional, and physical health is directly impacted by how much we blame others and ourselves. What is often missed is how blaming automatically puts us in a victim mentality. This makes us feel powerless to change our situation and it results in us being chronically stressed. It is an exhausting way to live. It is a simple equation but – less blame equals less pain (mental or physical).

What are the benefits of hiring a high-performance coach? The main benefit is their ability to unpack a client’s underlying issues rather than focusing on the story they think is causing their stress and illness. A high-performance coach helps you see the simplicity in all the complexity. They offer you different ways of seeing the world, while giving you exercises that help you reach new levels of potential you thought impossible.

How do you think modern life impacts our minds, and what can be done to counteract any negative effects?

I no longer blame the external world for the way I feel. I look at everything as a reflection on how I honestly feel. So, for example, if someone is scrolling on social media for hours then there is something else feeding this habit. It is the same with consuming alcohol or sugary foods in excess. There is nothing inherently wrong with social media, alcohol or eating sweets. When we honestly heal, we naturally no longer desire the escapism that these past times provide.

BEAUTY

While taking care of your internal wellbeing is one of the most important ways to be your best self, looking after the external parts can also help make you feel good, in moderation of course. Life is about balance and finding that balance is crucial to overall harmony. With that in mind, here are some exciting beauty salons to be pampered in.

Pretty Wow

Long-standing popular salon Pretty Wow has opened a bigger and better venue, close to the original in JLT. The 2.0 version is home to 20 new hair styling stations, a luxury manicure and pedicure area with plush seats, a lash and brow room, a makeup bar, and four private luxury treatment rooms offering premium facial and skin treatments. There’s even a stylish drinks and colour bar in the centre. prettywow.ae

Soak

Soak is all about making you feel pampered and relaxed throughout your treatment. Much attention to detail is paid, with Soak-branded fluffy towels and wooden trays where a neat menu of hot and cold drinks is served as you get pampered. The treatment menu focuses a lot on nails, but there’s also a lash and brow room for lash lifts and brow laminations, and there’s a trio of sinks where you can book in for a blow dry or hair treatment, with cut and colour services set to launch soon.

The more things we can do to switch off from social media and into flow state, the better we’ll all be. Not sure how to find your flow state? Here are some institutes that will help you learn something new and find the thing that makes time fly by.

You hear the terms ‘farm-totable’ and ‘sustainability’ tossed around so much these days that they’re in danger of becoming comms buzzwords instead of authentic indicators of a restaurant’s commitment to green business practices. But with just a little research, you can find places that are the real deal when it comes to minimising their environmental impact. Restaurants that keep the planet – and the local community – in mind at every stage of their process. Here’s a look at five venues around town all proving that bona fide sustainability is a delicious, rewarding adventure for chefs and guests alike.

The future of sustainable dining is alive – and delicious – at these Dubai restaurants
LAURA COUGHLIN

TEIBLE

Seasonal, farm-to-table restaurant Teible at Jameel Arts Centre is one of the few businesses in Dubai leading a change in sustainability efforts. Instead of opting for imported produce, Teible now sources 95 per cent of its ingredients from within the UAE, which means reducing the restaurant’s carbon footprint dramatically. Sixty per cent of its fruit and vegetables are now supplied by Sharjah’s The Greenheart Farm; its meat products, such as beef, lamb and camel are sourced from Home Meat Farm; while specific local ingredients such as lemon verbena herbs and mushrooms are collected from My Farm Dubai. And it’s not just the menu that’s sustainable. Recently, Teible implemented subtle, earthfriendly upgrades to the restaurant’s interiors to ensure materials used throughout the venue work to preserve the natural environment. Guests visiting the newly re-opened restaurant will see Teible’s all-new eco-friendly ceiling made from superfine wood wool sourced from an FSC-certified forest, while old countertops have been replaced with a date seed-based material, and new walls have been built using discarded palm trees from Abu Dhabi.

Jameel Arts Centre, Jaddaf Waterfront, daily 11am to 5pm and 6pm to 11.30pm, (closed Tue). Tel: (0)4 243 6683. @teible_

LOWE

Nose-to-tail dining can be fun, delicious and good for the planet – just head to Lowe for proof. The stylish grub hub in Al Bahari is part of the wave of radical Dubai restaurants helping the industry make major steps towards being greener while still producing incredible food. Dubai’s only recipient of a Michelin Green Star for sustainable gastronomy, Lowe has a firm focus on reducing waste, sourcing local and giving back to its community. Australian duo Jesse Black and Kate Cristou’s eatery first pushed this ethos with its popular Waste Not dinners made entirely of food scraps and has since adapted to the rest of their operations. Think nose-to-tail dining, using leftover peels in recipes and fermentation, and avoiding single-use plastic. Lowe even has its own vegetable garden in their backyard.

Koa Canvas, Wadi Al Safa 3, Wed and Thur 6pm to 11pm, Fri and Sat 8am to 4pm and 6pm to 11pm, Sun 8am to 4pm, closed Mon. Tel: (0)4 320 1890. @lowedxb

BOCA

Sustainability informs every aspect of this fabulous Mediterranean restaurant in DIFC, from the catering supplies to the wines it sources, everything has been picked for its eco credentials. A pioneer in Dubai, Boca’s fundamental sustainability pillars are led by the city’s very own Captain Planet, Omar Shihab, who continues to possess an uncompromising commitment to sourcing local and seasonal produce in a steadfast mission to reduce the restaurant’s carbon footprint. In 2021, Boca announced it would run on 100 per cent renewable energy, and at the same time, called for an audit on itself around sustainability. Over 80 per cent of its ingredients are sourced locally, thanks in part to exciting offerings such as Dibba Bay oysters, Pure Harvest tomatoes, and Mary Anne’s edible flowers, to name just a few pioneering companies with whom they work.

Gate Village 6, DIFC, daily noon to 2am. Tel: (0)4 323 1833. @bocadubai

WILD & THE MOON

What’s On Award-winning healthy-eating restaurant Wild & The Moon was created by a tribe of food lovers, chefs and nutritionists who believe that food should be good for you and the planet. The hippy café in Alserkal Avenue celebrates wild, locally foraged food and ethically sourced ingredients, along with products which are gluten and additive free, and vegan friendly. Besides promoting healthy agriculture and biodiversity, the team also strives for a zero-waste policy and recycle as much as they can. For example, pulp from their juices is turned into nutrient dense raw crackers; their containers are made with biodegradable packaging; and any unsold items are collected by Food Karma and distributed at lower prices at the end of each day. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, Sun to Thur 8.30am to 7pm, Fri and Sat 8.30am to 10pm. Tel: (0)4 345 0183. @wildandthemoonuae

DIBBA BAY OYSTERS

One of the UAE’s most impressive success stories, Dibba Bay Oysters has built an Emirati mariculture business that’s almost singlehandedly put the UAE on the food producing map. Identifiable by their white and gold-flecked shell and meaty texture, The Friends of the Sea-certified aquaculture farm produces the first and only gourmet oysters from the Middle East. Now you can enjoy them at two standalone Dibba Bay Oysters restaurants. The original can be found at Jumeirah Fishing Harbour 2, while its latest opening promises licensed dining down on the beach at Sheraton JBR. While other oysters sold in the UAE are imported through refrigerated freight, Dibba Bay Oysters are transported straight from their farm off the Fujairah coast to the local market, and their two restaurants, in just a few hours. This helps reduce carbon emissions and ensures that you get the freshest oysters, right from the sea.

REVIEW: SUMMERSALT BY KAYTO

Refined beachfront dining with stunning Burj Al Arab views

When Kayto opened as a pop-up at Jumeirah Al Naseem in 2019, it proved so popular that it became a permanent fixture. Now, three years later, the brand has added a seaside iteration to the beachfront, giving culinary prowess to the hotel’s upscale Summersalt beach club.

Alongside Summersalt, where hotel guests recline on navy loungers dotted alongside the sugary sand, there’s a breezy alfresco restaurant. This is luxurious beachfront dining done right: a whitewashed deck is filled with woven chairs topped with plush cushions, the turquoise ocean views can be enjoyed from every seat in the restaurant, and chilled house beats are the perfect level to add atmosphere without being overbearing. If the rolling sea views weren’t wow-worthy enough, the perfectly

framed Burj Al Arab is a majestic addition to the vistas. The aesthetic is perfectly in keeping with the five-star surroundings, a glamorous crowd catch up over sharing plates and glasses of perfectly chilled rosé, but it’s inviting without being stuffy.

Like the original, Summersalt by Kayto’s cuisine is inspired by classic Nikkei flavours, fusing Peruvian and Japanese dishes, but with a beachy twist. All dishes are designed to be shared, whether enjoyed as a sun-drenched lunch, or enjoying a romantic date night with an alfresco dinner under the stars.

A bowl of edamame (Dhs30) flaked with Maldon rock salt arrives soon after we sit down, and is the perfect snack to graze on as we peruse the menu. The beverage list is extensive and well-curated, with a full page of French wines on the first page, followed by world wines and a selection of sake. Wines by the bottle start from the mid-Dhs400, which is towards the more expensive side but not unreasonably so for the setting.

We share a tuna truffle ceviche (Dhs100), which may be small but is packed with flavour. From the signature

rolls, a shrimp tempura with avocado (Dhs90) has an impossibly light batter encasing fresh bites of shrimp, and slivers of avocado topping the fluffy sushi rice.

A much replicated Dubai dish is the miso black cod (Dhs195), with only a handful of restaurants executing it with finesse and flavour. Summersalt by Kayto can now sit among those, with a sweet sticky miso glaze topping chunks of meltin-the-mouth cod. Moving more towards the Peruvian influence, a slow cooked lamb shoulder (Dhs190) is braised for 36 hours, producing a tender cut of meat that pairs perfectly with creamy truffle mash and a mushroom escabeche. Our only complaint is that it’s slightly underseasoned.

While the whole meal is exceptional, the cheesecake brûlée with a zesty mandarin sorbet, (Dhs60), successfully eclipses it all and might be the best dessert we’ve eaten in Dubai.

Summersalt by Kayto, Jumeirah Al Naseem, 12.30pm to 12am daily. Tel: (800) 323232. jumeirah.com

Go for the views, stay for the vibe – and the cheesecake brûlée. This is the coolest new beachfront address in the city.

REVIEW: LOREN

A chic trattoria overlooking Palm West Beach

Dubai diners are so spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, that each venue has to push their creativity to new bounds in order to stand out. It’s not enough to have a great menu anymore It’s not even enough to offer brilliant views Guests get excited about restaurants that offer the full package, from interiors to service, food, drinks, location; the list goes on.

Thankfully for Ristorante Loren – the chic Italian concept, which recently opened atop SAN Beach at Palm West Beach – many of these boxes are ticked. The attention to detail is impressive, from gorgeous velvet menus with tiny doorknob handles to the fresh fish display, encased in marble and billowing with dry ice. It’s luxe without being pretentious.

From the aforementioned menu, the antipasti selection is indulgent and

exciting. The fritto all’ Italiana (Dhs120) comprises five different tapas bites which, while not ideal for sharing, do offer an intriguing variety of flavours. A seahorse-shaped plate serves a potato croquette, a bucatini with truffle caio e pepe and ossobuco saffron arancini, giving a taste of what’s to come through authentic Italian flavours.

A special mention has to go to ravioli del plin alla genovese (Dhs125). These delicious pockets of juicy slow cooked wagyu beef cheek are encased in al dente pasta pillows, before being drizzled with a heart-warming butter sage sauce and sauteed mushrooms. We would return for this dish alone.

Mains feature more slow cooked wagyu beef cheek, this time served under a grissini dome. The guancia di wagyu (Dhs195) is both succulent and flavourful, dripping in bell pepper sauce and complemented by the crunchy dome. The presentation was a little sloppy but what it lacked in Instagrammability it made up for in taste. If you’re more of a pesce fan,

the Scottish salmon arrosto (Dhs165) is a satisfying alternative. Beautifully pan-fried, the flaky fish paired well with its accompanying fregola risotto. But to really elevate the meal, add on some truffle mash potato (Dhs45) or beautifully crispy chunky fries (Dhs35).

The dessert menu hasn’t been overlooked at Loren. A selection of authentic Italian treats is available, including a traditional tiramisu (Dhs55), served with a chocolate ‘cigar’ in a large stone bowl. For something a little lighter, we recommend the coco bello Italiano (Dhs55). Served in a coconut shell, coconut mousse is layered with mango smoothie and topped with almond and vanilla crumble. Its, creamy, crunchy and indulgent without leaving you ready to be rolled out the door.

Ristorante Loren, The Club, Palm West Beach, Sun to Thur noon to midnight, Fri & Sat noon to 1am. Tel: (0)4 557 8293. @ristorante.loren

REVIEW: ONZE

How does this new addition fare in a sea of beloved restaurants at Dubai Creek Resort?

It’s hard to imagine that there was something missing from the burgeoning collection of restaurants at Dubai Creek Resort. This sprawling spot at the picturesque Creek is already home to institutions like QD’s and Boardwalk, the iconic Traiteur brunch and Twiggy, a beach club that sent the city’s daytime clubbing scene into a spin when it opened in January 2021. But it would appear there’s always room for more, as the resort recently welcomed Onze to its portfolio. A fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavours, Onze adds to Dubai’s ever-growing list of Nikkei restaurants.

There’s been much promised in the way of local DJs and live entertainment from team Onze, but at least for now, that’s not yet launched. When we arrive on a mid-week evening, the tempo is more relaxed, with chilled tracks playing

softly in the background. Not that that matters. We’re instantly impressed with this expansive alfresco restaurant, which is almost entirely outside. It’s sleek and contemporary with lush plants dividing up the huge terrace, separating the neon pink bar from the more formal restaurant, and the string of cabanas that line the edge, designed for casual grazing and admiring the views. Speaking of views, Onze instantly bags brownie points for its vistas of the golf course greens, calm waters of the Creek and twinkling city skyline in the distance.

From the ceviche bar, the ceviche classico (Dhs80) is fresh and well presented, but the leche de tigre dilutes the punchy flavour we expect. The Onze tsukemen ceviche (Dhs85) fares much better and finishing it with the Onze furikake adds welcome theatrics. Of the taquitos, we try both the salmon (Dhs65) and wagyu (Dhs85) and struggle to decide which we prefer. Each taco is a puffed,

crispy shell packed with textures, the salmon with wasabi pearls, the wagyu with pepper and avocado. We’re surprised by how much we enjoy the mizuna salad (Dhs45) a mix of Japanese leaves and avocado with just the right amount of jalapeno dressing. Arguably the standout dish is the Amazonic lobster (Dhs160), fresh bites of neatly sized lobster are coated in a tempura batter made with sparkling water to give it an impossibly light weight texture, and a welcome hint of shichimi spice.

We squeeze in a dessert of homemade churros covered in sugar and cinnamon. With each stick, we mop up every drop of the 60 per cent cacao sauce.

Onze, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, Port Saeed, 5pm to 3am daily. Tel: (0)4 250 6567. dubaicreekresort.com/ onze

REVIEW: LA NIÑA

A new addition to DIFC’s thriving dining scene

In an area like DIFC, where fine dining restaurants are plentiful, ICD Brookfield Place is solidifying itself as the spot to find the crème de la crème of hotspots. First came The Arts Club, a century-and-a-half-old institution that opened its first international outpost in the building two years ago. From the minds of Il Borro and Alici, we will soon welcome Josette to ICD, but before its arrival, La Niña has made its grand entrance. Brought to us by the team behind Opa, Bagatelle and Myrra, La Niña draws culinary inspiration from Spain and Portugal.

The interiors are pulled straight from Lisbon, with double-height ceilings, and patterned blue tiles stretching all the way up. A water fountain at the entrance and a sail-shaped curtain helps us to forget about the bustling financial district outside and transport us to a Mediterranean setting. We’re a little early, so take a seat at the marble bar while waiting for our table.

Our barman tells us about what life is like in Portugal and fixes us a pair of creative cocktails (whipped port, anyone?), while we work through a bowl of olives and cured wagyu with caviar – a refined start to the evening and the details don’t

go unnoticed. The venue is cleverly designed to make a large space feel intimate. The majority of the restaurant will spill onto the terrace once its ready to open later this month. It’s only when we take a sneak peek outside that we’re reminded of our location, as DIFC’s skyscrapers surround us and flood the terrace with light.

With so few Portuguese restaurants in Dubai, we’re keen to experience La Niña’s take on bacalhau (traditional salted cod, Dhs85). There are many ways to serve it, and this one comes in the form of fried fritters, alongside piri piri aioli. With four per plate, the substantial balls are balanced in flavour and pretty satisfying, although maybe not quite as good as the ones you’d find in Portugal.

The real highlight of the starters is the coca de trufa (Dhs85), a warm crispy tart oozing with melted cheese and finished with truffle and sliced figs. We love an indulgent dish (and anything with cheese) so this one really hits the spot. And because life is about balance, we oblige the recommendation of ensalada la Niña (Dhs45). Expecting a bowl of lettuce, roasted corn, tomato, Cotija cheese and pumpkin seeds, we’re surprised to see the salad served in individual baby gems

leaves. The hand-held style is genius, and the combination of fresh flavours is a welcome experience after one too many slices of melted cheese and fig.

Mains offer an intriguing, albeit pricey, selection of meat and fish dishes, and we opt for the lenguado al josper (Dhs650). Our server swiftly removes all bones from our filet of dover sole, which has been grilled in the josper oven and topped with tomato, smoked chili, and almonds. It’s light and flaky on the inside with a charred exterior that gives the fish a smoky flavour.

Each dish on the dessert menu has a suggested drinks pairing, from aged whiskey to a bottle of Champagne. Our dessert, caviar y coco (Dhs295) is recommended to pair well with the latter, but we defer in favour of another cocktail. The coconut ice-cream is incredibly smooth and drizzled in caviar oil. Using a porcelain spoon or a mini banana pancake, we scoop up mouthfuls of ice-cream and caviar. It’s a mix we haven’t considered before, but the light caviar flavour does well not to overpower the rest of the dessert.

La Niña, ICD Brookfield Place, DIFC, daily 12pm to 4pm and 7.30pm to 1am. Tel: (0)50 889 8336.

LAGUNA BEACH TAVERNA

A Mediterranean escape on Palm Jumeirah

Laguna Beach Taverna has been on our must-try list since it opened. Its alluring bohemian chic vibe, with wooden canopy design and elegant finishes are right up our street.

As we walk in, we’re greeted by the fragrant sea breeze and sandy floors. We quickly kick off our sandals and make our way to our shoreline table. The ambiance feels serene, with white linen drapes swaying in the breeze and glowing lights on each table, whilst beachy tech-house music plays in the background, transporting us to our

own Grecian Island. Once we’re perched at our natural wood table, we’re able to fully admire the view, which stretches over The Palm fronds, while hints of the Ain Dubai show through the gaps.

Laguna Beach Taverna curates Mediterranean Greek dishes designed for sharing. To start, we graze over some Greek olives (Dhs35), salty Padron peppers (Dhs40) and a delicious rustic breadbasket paired with a refreshing Greek yogurt dip. The olives and Padron peppers went down swiftly alongside the crusty rosemary bread.

Next up, a selection of Dibba Bay oysters (Dhs320) and a trio of carpaccio (Dhs110) featuring lobster, sea bass and salmon join our table.

The carpaccio is fresh and elegant, while hints of dill and Australian lime bring wonderful bursts of citrus flavours to the dish. The oysters, which are served on a bed of ice with lemon wedges and mignonette, are exceptional. Their luxurious presentation matches their taste.

The main event features woodfire grilled octopus (Dhs185), prawns (Dhs260), and a whole sea bass (Dhs400),

which is filleted right at our table. All the dishes are seasoned with parsley, lemon, and dill for a truly Mediterranean flavour. We’re also given Kalamata olives in a small bowl so that we can dress our fish with salty delights, creating a medley of delicious flavours. The star of the show has to be awarded to the sea bass, which is cooked to perfection, with soft and light white meat and a crispy and salty exterior.

Our favourite side dish is the baked baby potatoes, outshining the triple cooked chips (Dhs55) which lacked their traditional crispiness. All the accompanying dips are delicious, too, whether drizzled over our fish and potatoes, or mopped up with pitas and leftover bread.

For those who are smart enough to save room for dessert, the olive oil cake served with lemon zest and freshly whipped ricotta cream is an exceptional option.

SUCRE

It’s been a year since Sucre added a sprinkling of Argentinian flair to DIFC’s ever-impressive dining scene. In that time, it’s cemented itself as a stylish spot for innovative cuisine, master mixology and cool beats in the a la carte dining space. So now it’s turning its attention to brunch, presenting its own iteration, Saturdays at Sucre.

It’s an all-accommodating affair, with seating in the restaurant for families and those looking for a more chilled out afternoon. Those seeking a party vibe should book in the bar or the terrace, where brunch dishes and unlimited drinks are served up with front row seats to the saxophonist, drummer and DJ.

The menu follows one of our favourite brunch formats: starters to share, an a la carte choice of main, then it’s a short stroll to the dessert table where guests can enjoy unlimited sweet treats. On arrival, a choice of welcome mocktail or cocktail, the latter, a zesty gin basil, sets the tone for swift drinks service, and our glasses are never less than half full. Options extend beyond the typical house wines and spirits to include an array of cocktails like a smoky negroni and the crowd-pleasing espresso martini.

Starters are divided between a round of cold options followed by hot ones, beginning with a tuna ceviche, sugar snap salad and sea bass carpaccio. All are wellseasoned, both raw seafood dishes given a welcome sweetness, but the surprise favourite is the fresh, crunchy sugar snap salad, tossed with avocado,

crumbling feta and quinoa. Hot starters are perfectly plated and designed to be eaten in a bite or two.

Crispy empañadas stuffed with sundried tomato and melted cheese are delicious, perfectly fried prawn croquettes leave us wanting more, and spiced lamb tacos are piled with strings of red onion and celery, although slightly lack the spice that the menu promises.

From a choice of five mains, the meltoff-the-bone beef short rib is buttery and tender, and although we’ve scarcely saved room, we delight in finishing every bite. A dessert table is manned by two friendly pastry chefs, eager to cut generous slices of lemon meringue, chocolate cake and Basque cheesecake onto plates.

The lively DJ beats and musicians add just the right amount of atmosphere to have those looking to party on the dancefloor, while diners can still manage to have a conversation and hear one another. Sucre, Gate Village 5, DIFC, 12.30pm to 4pm, Saturdays, Dhs370 soft, Dhs440 house, Dhs590 Champagne. Tel: (0)4 340 0829. sucredubai.com

EAT // BRUNCH OF THE MONTH
A box-ticking brunch that brings the vibe without compromising on culinary. BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:
Authentic Argentine flavours in a sophisticated DIFC setting
Words: Alice Holtham

The first thing you should know about Honeycomb Hi-Fi – an intimate speakeasy-style venue tucked away from the madness of Business Bay – is that it’s been created by VKD hospitality, the cool cats behind Miss Lily’s and Indochine. This should tell you about the kind of calibre to expect when you walk through the door.

The second thing you need to know is that to actually walk through the door, you’ll need to find it first, which is located behind the wall of a cosy vinyl record shop inside the Pullman Hotel.

Honeycomb Hi-Fi’s modern Japanese sensibility, and the acoustic foam-covered ceilings reaffirm that this is an audio-

centric dining and drinks experience that exudes cool. The owners are self-confessed music lovers, so expect a rotation of DJs serving an audio feast that changes almost nightly. Guests can expect anything on the turntables, from electronic to jazz. For novices like us, it’s a musication with half the evening spent Shazaming.

Onto the food and drink and it’s pretty difficult to mess up ordering here. Aside from the range of wines, sake and Japanese craft beer, its artisanal cocktail menu is too appealing to ignore. The Manga Rita (Dhs75) with tequila, umeshu, pineapple vinegar and chilli rim was a spicy revelation that packs a punch.

Meanwhile, the Nashiso (Dhs80) offers a longer, more refreshing option with gin and shochu stirred in a sweet pear and shisho cordial.

The casual Japanese food menu has been curated by chef Matt Abergel of Hong Kong’s Yardbird and Ronin fame, who’ll be buzzing between Dubai and his home base in Asia every couple of months. The small sharing plates offered are based on eclectic Izakaya favourites – be sure to order the mochi stuffed crispy wings (Dhs62) – it’s dark enough in Honeycomb Hi-Fi to gnaw your way to the bone. Another standout is the thick scallop sui mai (Dhs85) topped with a nasal-cleansing drizzle of kizami wasabi. And then there’s the sticky duck tsukune (Dhs28 per skewer) that practically melts in the mouth.

WELCOMES
ON JANUARY 27
DUBAI
HANS ZIMMER

What do The Dark Knight, Kung Fu Panda and Top Gun: Maverick all have in common? Besides the fact that they are all heroes in their films, the scores from these films have all been composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer.

On January 27, the multiple Academy Awardwinning composer will be gracing the stage at the Coca-Cola Arena as part of his popular Hans Zimmer Live tour.

The highly celebrated German composer is the man behind some of the most iconic movie soundtracks in the history of cinema. His most famous works also include hits from The Lion King, Inception, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Dune – the 2021 Academy Award-nominated science-fiction epic filmed in Abu Dhabi.

During his two-and-a-half-hour performance in Dubai, the audience will be treated to these iconic musical creations live plus new and reimagined arrangements from the Oscar-winning composer’s stellar back catalogue. Together with a large orchestra, the concert will be complemented by Hans Zimmer’s magnificent live band and dancers.

Throughout his career, Zimmer has received two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, four Grammys, an American Music Award, as well as a Tony Award.

Speaking on his performance in Dubai, Hans Zimmer stated, “I’m thrilled to bring Hans Zimmer Live to Dubai for the very first time. As one of the world’s most exciting and dynamic cities that’s home to over 200 nationalities, this is a great opportunity to speak to a multicultural global audience in the universal language of music. It seems fitting to bring our show to such an extraordinary city and treat its people to an unforgettable evening of music and entertainment.”

During the time of publishing, bronze tickets for Hans Zimmer Live have sold out. Tickets now remain for silver (Dhs495), gold (Dhs695), diamond (Dhs995) and royal (Dhs1,195).

SPOTLIGHT:
ARTIST
Chaurasia Shraddha

Over the past couple of years, huge digital transformations have been made in the art world. Terminology such as the metaverse, NFTs and crypto have become daily conversations, compelling artists to keep up to date with the world of 1s and 0s. This technology is even revolutionising the way that some art is created, with many artists now experimenting the medium of artificial intelligence (AI).

For those uninitiated, AI art is created using a specific programme where users enter a line of text known as a ‘prompt’. It is created without the need for paint or pen tools. Simply enter a prompt such as ‘Van Gogh’s Starry Night and the Eiffel Tower’, and watch as the programme scans thousands of related images before generating a new image based on what the AI has learned. This process usually takes less than a minute.

Shraddha Chaurasia, an Art Director at a strategic digital communications agency in Dubai, has recently started experimenting with the world of digital art. After a period of feeling the need to ‘switch off,’ she got into creating AI art. Using a programme called Midjourney, Chaurasia starts off with a colour theme, a unique location and the idea that she wants to convey.

But it’s not as simple as it sounds. Chaurasia tells us, “It’s a very long process of trial and error as, at times, the words you’re using are not being interpreted by the AI in the way you think they would be”. Some of her pieces take three hours to make, while others take around a day and a half.

When not working or creating, you’ll find Chaurasia volunteering at Stray Dogs Centre in Umm Al Quwain. Much of her work is influenced by her love for dogs, “Nothing quite beats visiting a shelter in the middle of nowhere on a Saturday morning and having 15 dogs running towards you,” she tells us. Chaurasia also runs the Stray Dogs Centre TikTok account and is working on some new filters and posters in order to raise proceeds for the shelter.

The use of digital tools is hotly contested in the art world, with much debate of the legitimacy of skill and whether it can be considered ‘real’ art. “AI art will never replace real art,” says Chaurasia. “I think it will remain a tool to help artists achieve what they want on the canvas faster. It will cut down on tedious research time and will allow artists to focus more on the creative aspect,” she adds.

Futuristic Dubai is Chaurasia’s favourite creation. Using predominantly aqua tones, the artwork depicts what the digital artist imagines Dubai will look like in the future. Another one of her works gives viewers a glimpse of what the city would look like if covered in a blanket of snow.

The limitless possibilities of the medium is perhaps what makes it so interesting. Facing hurdles when the platform produces unexpected outcomes can be argued as a creative challenge in itself and overcoming these would indeed require much skill. But should we even look at the world of AI art with such a serious lens? “Experiment and have fun” is Shraddha Chaurasia’s message. @troveofvisuals

A jewel

IN THE OCEAN

Zanzibar has it all, from dreamlike beaches to superb seafood, a UNESCO world heritage old town and welcoming locals. Here, What’s On shares its favourite tips and tricks to exploring the archipelago

66 JANUARY 2023 | WHATSON.AE

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Get lost in Stone Town

With its narrow cobblestoned streets and intricately carved front doors, the ancient district of Zanzibar has a charm that’s sufficiently exotic for a chase scene in a Bond movie. Historically, Stone Town was a flourishing capital for the spice trade, which attracted businessmen from across the globe. They introduced different architectural styles as they built their homes and businesses, creating a unique blend of Arabic, Persian, Indian, European, and African buildings in the city. Explore the market where locals still shop and haggle for goods, and then settle at a table at one of the many rooftop bars to enjoy the sunset.

Snorkel the reefs surrounding Mnemba Island

Located just 20 minutes off the northeast coast of Zanzibar is Mnemba Island, a breath-taking private island rumoured to be owned by Bill Gates. On it lies a luxurious lodge where stays will set you back over US$2,000 a night. But the surrounding coral reefs are the island’s hidden gems and are free for all to enjoy. Spend a few hours snorkelling and marvel at the tropical fish in colours Crayola never imagined. Better still, if you’re lucky, you might even be joined by a pod of dolphins, who’ll appear completely unfazed by your presence.

Eat local foods at the night market

Each evening as the sun fades, Stone Town’s Forodhani Park transforms into an open-air food night market. A kebab of tandoori lobster accompanied by freshly pressed sugarcane juice is a quintessential treat. Haggle your price and wait for the vendor to heat up your choice on an open fire stove in the middle of the park.

WHATSON.AE | JANUARY 2023 67

Dine in the middle of the ocean

An evening spent dining on this rock in the middle of the Indian Ocean is almost a rite of passage for first-time visitors to Zanzibar. The restaurant has gained something of a cult following, thanks, in large part, to its Instagrammable location. Not surprisingly, The Rock @therockzanzibar – accessed by boat during high tide or by wading out during low tide – serves up seafood among a range other international cuisine. Guests can sit inside, but we suggest you arrive early and make a beeline for one of the sofas out on the terrace. Order a cocktail and a plate Zanzibari fish fingers and grilled calamari and admire the spectacular view. Reservations are essential.

Enjoy the beaches of Paje

Long walks on Paje Beach are almost mandatory. Unlike the northern tip of Zanzibar, Paje lies on the southeast coast, the uncommercial side of Zanzibar with a shoreline dotted with palms. Out at sea, the water is bright blue, unblemished to the horizon, where it seems to liquefy into the sky. The swimming is good at high tide and there’s excellent snorkelling and kitesurfing offshore.

USEFUL INFO

Flight time: 5 hours and 35 minutes direct via flydubai from Dhs2,500 return Visa: Visas cost US$50 and can be purchased on arrival or applied for in advance via eservices.immigration.go.tz

Currency: Tanzanian Shilling but US Dollars are accepted almost everywhere

Average temp (Jan to Mar): 26-32°C

Visit the hundred-yearold tortoises on Changuu Island

Also known as Prison or Quarantine Island – as it was once used to house slaves suffering from yellow fever – Changuu is a small island roughly 15 minutes northwest of Stone Town by boat. Today, the island is owned by the government and acts primarily as an endangered giant tortoise sanctuary, whom visitors are welcome to feed. These massive Aldabra tortoises are thought to be among the longest-lived animals on earth, with the oldest thought to be roughly 150 years old.

TOUR GUIDE

EXTRAORDINAIRE

One of the best ways to explore the island is by putting your plans in the hands of an expert. Thirty-year-old Adam Simai has been offering private tours of his beloved Zanzibar for years. Honest, friendly and extremely knowledgeable, he’ll help arrange a suitable itinerary based on your activity preferences, and sort out all boat and car transfers, picking you up and dropping you back at your guesthouse each day. Daily rates start at US$100.

Radisson Beach Resort Palm Jumeirah

A chic hotel on bustling Palm West Beach

THE LOCATION

Palm Jumeirah is arguably one of the most premium locations for tourists and residents looking for a seaside escape. Being situated on Palm West Beach means that there are some spectacular things to do just outside of Radisson Beach Resort Palm Jumeirah. Directly on the beach in front of the hotel are Koko Bay and February 30, among several other popular beach clubs.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Upon entry, we’re instantly greeted by a spiral staircase, finished with a modern cement and wood effect. The rest of the hotel follows a similar vibe, with beige and cream accents accompanied by black hardware, as well as ceiling hanging egg chairs, and rattan low seating, which make for an overall relaxed beach chic feel.

THE ROOM

We check into a Premium Room with sea view, and it doesn’t disappoint. There are

also Corner Premium Rooms, as well as Superior Rooms and One Bedroom Suites. The size of the Premium Room is ample, with all the usual suspects, including a king-size bed, an armchair next to a wood-top table and a dressing table with a gorgeous round mirror. The towels are exceptionally soft and fluffy, which give a spa feel to the open-plan bathroom. The interior style of the room follows that of the hotel, with beige accents and black hardware.

THE FACILITIES

The hotel has its own private beach area, and located on the first floor are a lively private pool and bar. However, for a more exclusive vibe there’s Tonino Lamborghini Mare Nostrum on the rooftop. The hotel’s pool bar is decorated with clay pots and intriguing pourers and decanters atop the counters, providing conversation-starters between guests and staff. A rejuvenating

health club and spa is also on offer for those looking for a relaxing spa break.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Radisson Beach Resort is home to Latin-inspired lounge, Esco-Bar, as well as Black Flamingo, which aims to transport guests to vibrant Miami. For dinner though, we opt to try rooftop restaurant, Tonino Lamborghini Mare Nostrum. Here, guests enjoy luxe pool vibes by day and divine Italian cuisine by night, boasting crisp white and azure fixtures and fittings that only complement the stunning sea view. The attentive staff couldn’t do enough for us, from recommending cocktails, to guiding us through a menu of authentically Italian dishes. Options include a catch of the day, perfectly cooked rib-eye steaks, and pastas galore; we were spoiled for choice. A buffet breakfast is served on the first floor, meaning we could get our fill of delicious pastries and freshly brewed coffee.

THE ROOM RATES

A one-night stay in a Premium Room with sea view and breakfast included in January will cost from Dhs1,600 per night, plus taxes.
