It’s time to take a walk on the wild side. Escape the city and retreat to Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts, where escapism, adventure and abundant nature are calling. On one island off the coast of Abu Dhabi, three breathtaking Anantara Resorts present an ocean of experiences that guarantee vacation memories to last a lifetime. A getaway unlike any other in the UAE, at Sir Bani Yas Island impossibly white beaches, rugged mountains and rolling desert plains provide a scenic backdrop to a unique stay where contemporary meets heritage.
At the heart of the island, this traditional property fuses regal Arabian comfort with contemporary five star amenities. Initially conceptualised as a royal guesthouse by the Founding Father of the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Desert Island Resort & Spa by Anantara now welcomes guests to enjoy Anantara’s signature hospitality, while making the most of the surrounds. Perched on the north shore between a lagoon and the open ocean, guest rooms here start from Dhs820, with a collection of rooms, suites and villas serving as the perfect base for a family-friendly Arabian escape. All rooms offer stunning sea views, while private villas come with benefits such as a plush lounge and sumptuous private pool mere steps from the beach.
When you can tear yourself away from the joy of your secluded digs, fill your boots at The Palm, serving up decadent breakfast spreads and themed buffet dinners. For something a little different, dine poolside on Middle Eastern flavours at Al Shams, book in for a cooking class led by the expert chefs, or arrange a bespoke Dining by Design culinary journey for two, whether it’s Italian food on a remote beach or an African braai in lush savannah.
Within the resort, guests can soak up the surroundings with a dip in the free-form pool that overlooks the gulf, cosy up with a book in the library or pick up a memento to treasure forever in the souk. There’s even a pampering spa, transporting guests to Anantara’s Thai roots with its two couples’ treatment rooms with a bubbling outdoor Jacuzzi, traditional Thai massage room and indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. Embark on a pampering spa journey for 90- or 120- minutes of pure indulgence, tailor made to restore and reinvigorate the senses.
No trip to Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts is complete without seeing the sights, so wear your best safari gear and head out on a game drive across the Arabian Wildlife Park. Marvel at the 11,000 indigenous animals that roam this protected land, from giraffes and hyenas to ostriches and the prized Arabian Oryx. Other animalfocused experiences include a heritage falcon show, scenic horse ride and a fascinating nature walk, all led by the expert activity guides. But there’s more than just wildlife on offer. With a culture and history tour, you’ll learn about the 42 scattered archaeological sites that date back as far as 600 AD, as well as its 20-million-yearold salt domes; a Wadi Walk allows you to see the island from a new perspective, scaling dunes and delicately discovering fossils in the sand; or mountain biking invites you to explore
the island by pedal power, finding your favourite corners of this oasis as you navigate the terrain.
Then there’s the experiences by sea, from diving and snorkeling to wakeboarding at sunrise and sunset kayaks.
Alongside the centrepiece resort, the island is home to a further two Anantara properties, both all-villa retreats offering blissful privacy. Anantara Al Yamm Villa Resort is a chic ode to a traditional Emirati fishing village found on the island’s eastern coast, with a collection of 30 villas dotted throughout the mangroves and the golden beach. Each offers an instant island castaway feel, with outdoor terraces that make the most of the gorgeous sea views. Here, guests can count precious gazelles and vibrant emerald peacocks among their neighbours, so while you take a dip in your private pool, don’t be surprised to see a local resident swing by for a drink.
For safari lovers looking for the ultimate experience without the expense of a flight, there’s Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort. Having reopened on October 1, this all-villa resort is one of the most luxurious stays in the UAE for embarking in authentic nature. Wake up to the sights of a wild gazelle. Embark on a desert drive across the savannah. Then retreat to your private terrace for dinner under the stars.

…it’s this one. Abu Dhabi Culinary is in full swing, turning every corner of the city into a taste sensation. From three days of music at Amplified to Abu Dhabi Art, there are so many festivals that global culture capitals pale in comparison. Then there’s the small matter of the biggest event in the F1 calendar. The grand finale. The last race in what’s been the longest Formula 1 season in racing history. While Max Verstappen has already clinched the 2022 World Championship title, the final race on the calendar still promises to be an enthralling spectacle. Even if you don’t know your McLaren from your Mercedes, Yas Island will still be the only place you’ll want to be. As well as on-grid action, there’s four epic after-race concerts, yacht parties with international headliners, and restaurant pop-ups from some of our favourite restaurants. Start your engines on p18.
But it won’t just be the roar of engines you’ll hear in Abu Dhabi. Plucked straight from the glitz and glamour of Broadway, legendary musical The Lion King begins its historical four-week run in the capital this month. Celebrating 25 years of entertaining audiences across the globe since its 1997 debut, the show – which has been seen by nearly 110 million people worldwide – promises to bring to life a beloved Disney classic with stunning special effects and that unforgettable soundtrack. The King of Beasts and all his comrades are on p26.
As it’s almost Time To Say Goodbye on another editor’s letter, I can’t go without shouting out one final event, the welcome return of beloved Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Tissues at the ready – you’ll find me teary eyed in the front row.

I finally ticked off a venue that’s been on my list for a while, with a visit to Q’s Bar. The cosy live music bar is known for hosting some of the most soulful voices in the world, and the current resident act is Ayanna Joni. It was a truly magical experience.

– Romy Hunt, Editorial InternUAE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…
Who are you, and what made you famous?
My name is Rabih Fakhreddine and I am the Founder and CEO of 7 Management, the company that created, owns and operates venues including Seven Sisters, Antika, The Theater, BO18.DXB, February 30 Beach, Café Beirut and Lucia’s. I’m not sure I’m famous but I can say that any success or fame I may have results largely from my incredibly creative, hardworking team, dedicated international partners and, mostly importantly, our amazing, life-loving customers.
How long have you been in the UAE?
It has been almost four
years since I started working between the UAE and Lebanon. It has felt like home from day one.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
Honestly, there aren’t typical days in our industry. In fact, I would say working days and nights is more accurate given the strong after-hours element of business at 7 Management. That being said, generally I try to spend as much time as I can with my wife and children before going to the office, or ‘the kitchen’ as I like to call it, and making things happen with my work family. There is never a dull moment and always something to get excited about.
Can you tell us about your upcoming venues for the remainder of 2022?
Over the next few months, The Palm will see an eclectic bar and lounge called Black Flamingo open in the Radisson Hotel, as well as Café Beirut by The Sea in The Fairmont. We will also introduce our vibrant new
Italian concept, Limonata to Dubai, which will be perfectly situated on Vista Mare. Last, but certainly not least, our team is putting the final touches to a one-of-a-kind, curated World Cup experience hosted in Jumeirah Emirates Towers. We also have great plans for the rest of the Gulf, such as Lucia’s, Seven Sisters and Antika in Saudi and soon Antika in Manama, Bahrain.
Any surprises you can share with us for next year?
Those seeking a thrill can look forward to trying a new experience that will change the Dubai dining experience. We’ll share the big announcement very soon.
What makes a restaurant or venue successful?
It’s the full experience. You can’t just have one great element and leave the rest to chance. We believe that our customers want it all; great food, service that is secondto-none delivered in a space that speaks volumes and with unforgettable entertainment. The days and nights customers spend with us, stay with them for a lifetime.
How would you describe the Dubai hospitality scene in three words?
Adventurous, passionate, and edgy.
Do you think Dubai will be your forever home?
Will I always live here? I can’t say, but having my business here, marrying my wife and raising children here, it will always be home in one way or another.

Abu Dhabi is no one-trick pony when it comes to sporting events.
In fact, the events calendar is bursting at the seams with showcases of international competitive excellence. But few capture the imagination, and the world’s attention, in quite the same way as the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (F1).
Taking place this year between November 17 and 20, the F1 weekend encompasses so much more than just ‘cars going round a track’. There are the After-Race Concerts, the sophisticated and occasionally less sophisticated viewing parties, elite Michelinapproved dining pop-ups, and yes, very fast cars going round a track, very quickly.
You’re probably already aware, but just
in case you’re the sort of fair-weather fan that’s along for the fun and picks who they cheer for on the basis of car colour, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the final race of the season. A fact that was highlighted in a never more dramatic way than with the final race of 2021, where Max Verstappen claimed victory through the jaws of controversy on the very last lap, leaving Lewis Hamilton one Driver’s Championship title away from forever glory.
This year the Abu Dhabi finale will likely be a victory lap for Verstappen who already has a titanic tally of race wins
under his belt. But winners never take their foot off the pedal – Hamilton will be out for vindication, and Mercedes are still battling it out with Ferrari for second place in the team leader boards. There’s still a lot that will be decided over the long November weekend.
Fresh after some major track alterations (designed to allow greater opportunities for overtaking) in 2021, a brand-new viewing stand has been added to the circuit’s North Straight.
But if you don’t have tickets, we’re afraid it’s bad news – they sold out of the box office in record time.
Organised by Flash Entertainment and staged at what is now-known as Etihad Park (the artist hub formally known as du Arena) Abu Dhabi’s Yasalam After-Race Concerts are the stuff of legend. A gloriously eclectic mix of triple A talent is jetting to the capital to perform for one night only after each day’s motorsport sessions. The Yasalam ‘previously featured artist’ list reads like a Hall of Fame roster – Eminem, Beyonce, The Kings of Leon, Jay-Z, Aerosmith, Linkin Park, Prince, Britney Spears, Blur, Rihanna, Paul McCartney, Muse, Post Malone, Lewis Capaldi, The Weeknd and Stormzy, to name a few. And the only way to see them play is to hold track tickets for whichever day the artist is performing. You
cannot purchase concert tickets separately.
The proceedings kick off on Thursday November 17 with UK rapper Dave, followed by EDM maestros, Swedish House Mafia, headlining the show on Friday November 18. Next up, member of the rap aristocracy, Kendrick Lamar will be taking his brooding philosophical bars to the stage on Saturday November 19. While on Sunday November 20, closing the final day of the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix will be British rock veterans, Def Leppard. Once again, Flash Entertaiment have delivered an eclectic mix of genres, sure to keep all race-fans happy in what is shaping up to be an epic Formula 1 weekend.
Performing on Sunday November 20 are British rock band Def Leppard. Big on hairspray and bubble gum metal, the band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and are official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. The honour of the Yasalam Sunday spot is usually bestowed upon an act offering a big back catalogue of sing-along anthems – and the Sheffieldian quartet are no exception. There’s Pour Some Sugar on Me, Bringin’ on the Heartbreak, Animal, Hysteria and about another five decades of guitar jamming dad rock awesomeness to prepare for on the final night of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
UK rap sensation Dave (AKA Santan) will be taking the stage on Thursday November 17. You may be aware of the life and works of Dave via his rhythmically slick AJ Tracey collaboration on the track Thiago Silva, his monster hit Location (which also features Burna Boy) or more recently the UK chart number one banger, Starlight. Fun fact, our talented friend Dave also played the character Morris ‘Modie’ Gregor in the outstanding British drama, Top Boy.
This EDM supergroup consisting of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso are the creators of monster base-line bangers such as Don’t You Worry Child, Save The World, Moth to a Flame, RedLight and Sacrifice. You’ll be able to reach for the lasers at their post-lap rave-up on Friday November 18, after a fierce day of qualifying. We’re particularly looking forward to waving glow-sticks, slightly offrhythm to the track Antidote, originally created in collaboration with Knife Party. It’s the perfect way to keep that 200mph adrenaline pumping off-track. The dance music collective took a few years off from topping the charts, but just like the actual Mafia, once you’re in you can never leave. Recent team-ups and ‘vs’ tracks have seen them working with The Weeknd, and their hotly anticipated album Paradise Again dropped in April this year.
American megastar Kendrick Lamar will headline the Yasalam After-Race Concert on Saturday November 19. In the decade since the release of his debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city, Kendrick Lamar has achieved massive international success as a multi-Platinum selling artist and producer, and has also co-founded creative imprint, pgLang. His impressive collection of accolades include an incredible 14 Grammy wins and a Pulitzer Prize, of which he became the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win the award for his 2017 album, DAMN. He dropped his fifth studio album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers in May 2022 to critical acclaim.
E very year to go along with the many established permanent culinary seats in the capital, the F1 brings a host of internationally renowned, award-winning restaurant pop-ups. For foodies, even race fan ones, the on-plate theatre on offer can be equally, if not more, exhilarating than that on-track. And this year will be no different. Already confirmed as the Grand Prix’s gastronomic companions are…
Located on the 54th floor of Address Sky View Hotel, this Michelin Guide restaurant isn’t just breaking Instagram because of its Burj Khalifa views, the menu of international fine dining classics delivers outstanding taste experiences. You’ll find the F1 temporary location, rather fittingly, on the Yas Marina Circuit rooftop at Luna Lounge.
This super trendy speakeasy found inside La Cantine du Faubourg, offers Japanese-inspired street-food and feels like the perfect pick for gourmet Grand Prix grazing. Expect little nuggets of nigiri overtaking gyoza on the home straight, high octane bowls of ramen FTW and tasty meaty skewers for pre-podium treats. Gohan’s new limited time pop-up will be found within the North Grandstand.
Available to explore within the existing Shams Suite venue, Ninive is a veritable celebration of Middle Eastern cuisine, a rooftop restaurant and cocktail bar offering epic grilled fare, mezze, merguez couscous (thank us later), skewers and salads. We couldn’t think of a better ambassador to give the Abu Dhabi F1 culinary ensemble, an authentic local edge.
Also slotting very nicely into the Deck at Nine dining ensemble is Opa – one of Dubai’s most popular Greek tavernas, offering intensely creative Ionian flavours, plate-smashing (whether that will be going on here is unlikely but still TBC) theatrics and white-walled, botanically abundant summer holiday vibes.
Everything about the F1 is extra – there are the outfits (in the stands as much as the pit lane), the seemingly physics-defying cars, aerial acrobatic jets and commercial aircraft painting the sky in the national colours as part of a patriotic flyover, fireworks displays, celebrity attendance and all of the ‘gram-triggering carry on we’ve already talked about. One genre we’ve deliberately left until last though, is the city’s stellar clutch of viewing parties.
You’ll find some of the finest examples trackside at W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island. During race weekend, the hotel transforms into a nonstop F1-esta zone, with every available venue and viewing deck space given over to brunches, drunches and rave-ups all within ear-roaring proximity to the iconic Yas Marina circuit — often with unmatched views of the action. On Saturday November 19, look out for worldrenowned house music DJ, Roger Sanchez in the W Lounge. Over at W’s restaurant Rush, foodies can expect a Buddha Bar pop-up, complete with the hotspot’s resident DJs and a ‘Seventh Heaven’ brunch, priced from Dhs1,400.
But for something a little different, and dare we say ‘extra’, Xclusive Yachts is offering an armada of alternative race-celebrating boat parties, with jaw-dropping musical acts on (the) deck(s). Their Friday event includes a Rudimental DJ set, backed by a performance from Marvin ‘JLS’ Humes. On Saturday one of UK hip-hop’s most successful, and artful lyricists Tinie (formally Tinie Tempah) leads proceedings followed by, with a little bit of luck, garage double act DJ Luck & MC Neat lighting up the skank floor. On Sunday it’s Nathan ‘Lighter’ Dawe who’s sun-soaked beats make him the perfect choice to skipper your sound experience. He’ll be joined by one of British rap’s current brightest lights Yungen. It’s all being tied together by hosts Patrick Nazemi and Rick Live. For prices and to book, you’ll need to call (0)55 729 0415.
The Lion King has broken box office records as the fastest selling musical in Abu Dhabi’s history. Here’s why you should book tickets while you still can…
An inspirational score, breathtaking costumes and an iconic story: The Lion King musical, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, has made its mark on the world. The tale is familiar for most: a young lion named Simba, an animal kingdom, and a wicked uncle trying to usurp the throne.
Most came to know this story from the cartoon feature film released by Disney in 1994, but its popularity skyrocketed after a musical adaptation was introduced to Broadway. But how did The Lion King stage show come to be? A risk-taking director, a speedy premiere outside of Broadway and unique theatrical story telling all played a part in creating one of the most popular musicals of all time.
In the search for a musical adaptation for The Lion King, Disney tapped Julie Taymor – at the time 44 years-old – who was known for her experimental puppetry and risk-taking theatre productions. She hadn’t even seen the movie and wasn’t sure if she would want to take the job because she didn’t believe Disney and her aesthetic could match. After an initial viewing of The Lion King, she saw many elements that are timeless in storytelling: a young man outcast from his home, royalty seething for power, tales of romance and innocence.
Taymor began workshopping the musical in August 1996 and later premiered it for the top Disney executives. All the biggest risks were taken, including changing Rafiki to a female character because Taymor believed there was a lack of a strong female lead in the story. With brilliant details, musical vitality and relentless energy, this musical theatre adaptation of a Disney classic took the stage soaring, and in July of 1997, the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota debuted The Lion King, The Musical.
At the time of its first public premiere, Taymor expressed that she expected to see many audience members show up to see if she had sold out to the powerhouse that is Disney –curious if she would create a musical much like a theme park attraction. On the contrary, Taymor was picked for her reputation of taking risky decisions; she was urged to do the unexpected. In the end, Taymor succeeded in meeting her goal: “catch the essence of the movie but not do the movie”.
The number of puppets – rod puppets, shadow puppets, and full-sized puppets –used throughout the performance to recreate the animals on stage
The height of the giant giraffes where actors, trained in stilt-walking, climb ladders to fit inside
Indigenous African languages spoken on stage: Swahili, Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Congolese, and the click language Xhosa. Fun fact: ‘hakuna matata’ means ‘no worries’ in Swahili
The number of major international theatre awards won, including six 1998 Tony Awards
Animals, birds, fish, and insects represented throughout the show, including 39 hyenas and a whopping 52 wildebeest
November 13, 1997, marked the opening for The Lion King’s Broadway debut, to which it was met with rave reviews across the Big Apple, including the New York Times, who described it as “irresistible, refreshing, sophisticated, nothing else like it.”
With notable success and six Tony awards, the musical went international. In London’s West End, the Lyceam Theatre welcomed The Lion King on October 19, 1999, and 23 years later continues to wow audiences young and old.
Today, The Lion King has been seen by over 110 million people worldwide in over 100 cities across 21 countries, and now you can be one of them. In a first for the region, The Lion King roars into Abu Dhabi for an historical four-week run in the UAE capital from November 16 to December 10 at Yas Island’s Etihad Arena. Don’t miss out.
You’ve played the role of Simba since 2007. Do you remember how you felt when you first landed the role?
I felt extremely overwhelmed, proud, and ridiculously nervous to take on such an iconic beast of a role.
Can you still feel the love for the role so many years on? Absolutely! Never have I done a show that has challenged me to push myself so much as an artist. The physicality of the role alone is so much more than any typical musical theatre part. I consistently have to figure out how to keep my body, voice and mind in tip-top shape to perform this character on a nightly basis. However, I love a challenge. Growing into this role has been a fun education in adapting.
Have you felt like you’ve changed the way you’ve played him or understood him as you’ve become older?
I believe my performance in this role has matured. I’ve finetuned my delivery to create a much more well-rounded and truthful portrayal of Simba. When I first played the role, I had never experienced true love or the loss of someone I was close to. I tried to tap into my understanding of those themes, hoping those emotions would be conveyed to the audience. Now I truly understand what life can feel like and it’s brought me to a more truthful interpretation of Simba on stage.
Having played the role of Simba on Broadway, as well as in the West End, Las Vegas, and North American tour, Dashaun Young chats to What’s On about his unconditional love for the show
What do you think it is that audiences like the most about The Lion King Musical?
I believe audiences simply enjoy the entire show – it’s truly a one-of-a-kind spectacle.
How do you hope Abu Dhabi audiences will react?
I’m hoping the show generates lots of excitement during the Abu Dhabi season. The story is so beloved for
audiences and the musical has never visited the region before. I believe audiences will be overcome with emotion, much like all the other engagements we’ve played on this tour.
Do you have a favourite scene from The Lion King Musical that still impresses you?
Circle of Life is still to this day my absolute favourite part. There is a moment when Rafiki finishes calling to everyone that the future king has been born. Once the lights come up and reveal the procession walking towards Pride Rock, you see animal puppets for the first time. You regularly hear audience members gasp, applaud, or rise to their feet in admiration. It’s absolutely magical.
This is a huge moment for theatre in Abu Dhabi. What would you say to encourage people to see it?
You simply cannot miss it. It’s one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have. The cast of the International Tour are so excited to get back together for the Abu Dhabi season and I truly feel it’s going to be a very special moment for us.

ABOUT TO GET LOUD IN THE CAPITAL AT AMPLIFIED MUSIC FESTIVAL
In what is shaping up to be a huge month of live events, Amplified Music Festival will be coming to Abu Dhabi on November 11 and 12. Taking place at Yas Links Abu Dhabi, headliners for the event include OneRepublic and Cigarettes After S**.
Live Nation sits on a throne of world class fiesta credibility, a brand whose work includes such prestigious global festival phenomena as Lollapalooza and the Electric Daisy Carnival. They’re also the team responsible for bringing Sting to Abu Dhabi in January 2023.
Built on a platform of poetic lyrics, musical craftmanship, catchy hooks, mastery over instruments, faultless vocals and a back catalogue of unequivocally anthemic sing-along bangers and rockstar outfits, OneRepublic makes the perfect candidate to headline a music festival. We can’t wait to hear their gargantuan hits Apologize, If I Lose Myself, Counting Stars, and I Ain’t Worried pumping out of the ‘wall of sound’-style speakers.
The band formed in 2002, but it wasn’t until 2007 when Timbaland remixed Apologize that the six-piece really took off. Stop and Stare came next and acheived equally meteoric success, sending OneRepublic’s debut album Dreaming Out Loud platinum. Lead singer and the band’s main songwriter, Ryan Tedder, previously described the band’s genre and influences as being widely varied. “We’re no respecter of genre. If it’s a good song or a good artist whether rock, pop, indie or hip hop, they’ve probably influenced us on some level... nothing’s new under the sun, we’re a sum of a bunch of parts,” Tedder told PureVolume
Despite the fact it’s been open since February, and that it’s co-helmed by one of the UAE’s best know Emirati chefs, Faisal Alharmoodi, there’s a fair chance you won’t have heard about Let’s. It’s been busy, often booked out in fact, purely on word of mouth for it being one of Khalifa City’s best polished hidden gems. And it’s because of this whispered reputation, along with the allure of a menu that lines up all-day breakfast dishes backto-back with innovative Emirati fusion concepts, that our internal curiosity gauge was pushed over the line from ‘you have our attention’ to ‘this is a job for us’.
We’re here for a matinee seating, and the creative use of car park space is the first visual cue of just how popular this place is. Inside, spare tables are equally precious real estate, wait staff slip between them, gliding across the immaculate slate flooring. There are earthy terracotta tones to the banquets, off-white textured walls with back lit art and muted green olive trees that draw an idling gaze.
Chef Faisal is here to greet us. He tells us that the materials he has used to create this organic modern Mediterranean aesthetic have been imported directly
from the source. And it seems immediately apparent that this attention to detail, and a well-travelled eye for style both on and off the plate, have been vital components in the success of his significant contributions to the Abu Dhabi scene.
We’re kicking off the taste adventures with a light trek through one of Let’s’ bestloved breakfast dishes. The burrata zaatar flatbread (Dhs50) sits somewhere between a manakish and a pizza, and it feels like a natural crossover. Carved into four slices, the fire-baked base gives the whole dish a smokey rustic profile, turning up the contrast on the creaminess of cheese and floral notes of zaatar.
It’s followed by a burrata fatoush (Dhs65) and arancini balls (Dhs55). ‘Lightness’ and ‘capacity to refresh’ are amongst the most attractive qualities in any hypothetical salad. They’re both native to this fusion fatoush, you’ll also find a feisty interplay of citrus, satisfying khubzy crunch, nourishing garden greens, house-pickled onion, and a hint of sweet pomegranate. The arancini balls are
cleverly conceived. They come with a mushroom-trufflemozzarella core, subtle in flavour but enhanced by folding the pomodoro-style sauce onto each forkful.
A little ‘habibi’, a little ‘amici’, Let’s is a lot like something we’d like to see more of, and we haven’t even touched the pastry, one of its most prized exports.
For the main course, we’ve got a pair of off-piste arborio rice dishes – a chicken saloona risotto (Dhs75) and a spicy shrimp risotto (Dhs80). Of the two, it’s the former that strikes the most harmonious chord, a true Emirati x Italia collab going in hard on the reimagining of a traditional saloona stew. It takes a few mouthfuls of recalibration to fully appreciate the resultant flavour waves from the collision of these culinary worlds. The parmesan lends depth to spiceemboldened stock, an ocean of umami beneath rugged islands of spice souk chicken.

I always remember my mother and grandmother cooking in our kitchen. But my first real kitchen experience was at 18 years old as Commie 2 at the Marriott Beirut Hotel.
Since 2019, I’ve witnessed kitchens shift to rely more on local produce. Now they’re interested in more organic healthy items. I enjoy sourcing protein and vegetables from the local market.
I love to cook at home, especially if I have been fishing that weekend. I love to prepare salmon with sauteed spinach and creamy potatoes with lemon cream sauce.
The best dish I’ve ever made was a Wagyu beef steak. It was in Scotland during a cook smart competition at Kyloe Gourmet Steak Restaurant & Grill in Edinburgh.
Since an early age I saw my mother and grandmother cook delicious traditional meals. That stayed with me and has been my inspiration throughout my career.
I always knew I wanted to be a chef. However, the alternative has played on my mind that if I wasn’t, I’d be an engineer, whether mechanical, civil or aeronautical. Aloft Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street. Tel: (0)2 654 5000. marriott.com
The steaks are high...
The number of quality Abu Dhabi steakhouses had been on the decline until recently, and because a comeback story amid that trend is a ‘rare’ find indeed, it truly heartens us when we get to experience one.
With its 63rd floor views across the city and hazy Corniche blues, low lighting, and top-end wine and beef collection all set to a vintage jazz and swing soundtrack, Ray’s Grill has long been one of the front runners in the great title race for the capital’s favourite steakhouse.
Currently open for evening dining only, we’ve plonked ourselves into one of the panoramic aperitif suites. We’ve ordered Angus beef tartare (Dhs95) to start. The meaty melange is prepared tableside, with the added perk of being able to make bespoke your haché composition. Easy on the Dijon? Skip the shallots? You’re able to tinker with the recipe and tailor it to your own taste. It’s served with melba toast and amounts to a very fine mouthful.
Doubling down on the steak, our main course comes from the restaurant’s prime
cuts collection – a USDA 8oz tenderloin, seared to a tidy medium rare on the kitchen’s charcoal chargrill (Dhs205). As an act of open rebellion, we’ve opted for chimichurri sauce on the side along with chips and creamy spinach (Dhs30 each).
It’s an achingly difficult task to choose between the top few steakhouses, but it suffices to say, Ray’s Grill is up there amongst the best.
The steak is of undeniably strong stock and has been prepared to within a whispered breath of perfection.
There’s Goldilocks charring (not too much, or too little) on this big buttery wellseasoned fillet of beef, and the chimichurri salsa adds a subtle Latin lilt to the affair.
The chips are bold and crispy, triple fried as they are in flavourful beef dripping. We’re about halfway through these plates and musing on where exactly the restuarant sits in the Abu Dhabi steakhouse hierarchy.

The phrase ‘an oldie but a goodie’ has rarely been more relevant than when referring to InterContinental Abu Dhabi’s Marina Brunch. One of the city’s original weekend feasts, many experienced brunch goers (us included) hold a soft spot for this familyfriendly affair.
Although set at Belgian Café, the menu is a long way from merely waffles and hops. Instead, it’s an expansive buffet of Asian specialities from Cho Gao Marina Walk, South American cuts from Chamas, Lebanese recipes from
Byblos Sur Mer and delicious European signatures from the host.
This means unique and unexpected dishes, such as steaming pots of mussels, croquettes in every flavour, ceviches and aromatic Southeast Asian curries, are all found alongside usual subjects like sushi, mezze, cheeses, grilled meats and seafood.
Belgian Café is most famous for its vast patio and gorgeous marina views, and as the temperature hits an inviting level of ‘hot, but not too hot’, we chose to sit out on the terrace, assess which of the moored boats we’d most like to own, and enjoy this delectable affair in the winter shade.
We know that your weekend blow-out isn’t usually the appropriate time for a trip to the salad bar, but we urge you to start this hedonistic voyage with some of the incredible creamy broccoli, roasted sprouts, papaya salad and as many of the other fresh and colourful delights as you can manage. We have rarely tasted such a delectable spread of cold appetisers in all our years of brunching.
Other highlights include the tasty Peking duck, teriyaki chicken and beef bao buns, the succulent, melt-in-themouth Argentinian beef, and the German speciality sausages and ribs, served smothered in homemade sauce and on a pile of thick-cut golden fries. It all tastes sensational paired with a hefty tankard of Belgian brew or two.
While the inside buffet is all carefully labelled, we feel we could do with some help identifying ‘what is what’ outside. The live stations are easy enough to navigate, but the many large steel food warmers were not labelled, and we nearly missed out on some of the best dishes. If in doubt, have a peek.
Perfect for
However, this is the only change we would advocate to its otherwise winning formula. The staff are friendly and attentive, the soundtrack is awesome, and the dessert spread spans all our top sweet weaknesses.

Louvre Abu Dhabi celebrates its fifth anniversary with a new exhibition…
It’s been five years since Louvre Abu Dhabi opened its doors on Saadiyat Island back in November 2017. In celebration of its five-year anniversary, the incredible art museum has launched a not-to-be-missed exhibition and it’s one that art lovers won’t want to miss, titled Impressionism: Pathways to Modernity
Deemed as one of the most comprehensive Impressionist exhibitions launched in the region, the exhibition is in partnership with Musée d’Orsay and France Muséums, and in collaboration with several leading French institutions.
Impressionism was a radical art movement in the 19th century. It centred primarily around Parisian painters who used thin yet visible brush strokes and bright colours in their works. It took place during a rapidly reshaped world, caused by the Industrial Revolution, which impressionist artists often translated onto the canvas.
A legendary performance American singer, songwriter, pianist and record producer, John Legend, will perform at the Louvre Abu Dhabi as part of the fiveyear anniversary celebrations. The performance takes place on Saturday November 12 at 7pm with ticket prices starting from Dhs295.
Visitors to the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s new exhibition will be able to see the masterpieces of some of the most famous impressionist artists, including OscarClaude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Marie Pauline Morisot, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley.
The exhibition alone features more than 100 paintings, 40 drawings and prints, 20 photographs and even a contemporary video installation structured into 15 sections. Impressionist artists are at the core of this exhibition but there is a neat dialogue displayed between painters of the previous generation, known as the realists. Paintings at the exhibition include art by Édouard Manet – a French painter who heavily influenced the impressionism era – and Gustave Courbet, Henri Julien Félix Roussea and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
The exhibition will also be home to a new and significant acquisition – The Cup of Chocolate by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1877–1878). It hangs opposite Woman with a Coffee Pot by Paul Cézanne (1890-1895) to showcase the difference in painting styles.

Architect Jean Nouvel is the genius behind the striking dome structure. It appears to float, as its four pillars are hidden within the museum. The dome alone weighs 7,500 tonnes, making it heavier than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Described as a museum city floating in the sea, Louvre Abu Dhabi is home to 55 buildings, 23 galleries, a temporary exhibition space, a 1,200-seater auditorium, and a twostorey children’s museum.
Born out of an intergovernmental agreement signed between France and the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first universal museum in the Arab world. The Abu Dhabi government paid a whopping $525 million to use the prestigious name for 30 years.
Louvre Abu Dhabi’s permanent collection features a selection of 120 masterpieces allowing visitors to dive into thousands of years of human creativity across cultures and continents.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Louvre Abu Dhabi is hosting Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Saint John the Baptist. The art is a loan from the Musée du Louvre (The Louvre Museum in Paris) which will call the UAE capital home for the next two years. Renaissance art fans can check it out at the museum’s permanent gallery from November 8. Saint John the Baptist is just part of a series of four major loans made by the Musée du Louvre. Louvre Abu Dhabi will announce the next three masterpieces via their official channels.
An underground tunnel, six metres deep, will link three museums in Saadiyat Island Cultural District: Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum. Once complete, it will stretch 1.2 kilometres.
The capital comes alive with culture as Abu Dhabi Art returns
The annual art fair in Abu Dhabi is more than a traditional trade fair, it presents many events and initiatives to engage the general public. This year, during its 14th iteration, Abu Dhabi Art is displaying work from over 80 leading and emerging galleries as well as featuring a curatorially driven programme, including art installations, talks and performances taking place in different locations, making this its most comprehensive and diverse to date. Here are our highlights…
Each year, participating exhibitors are selected by an internal committee at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. The international modern and contemporary galleries present a wide range of artworks for sale by different artists. Art enthusiasts, collectors and visitors have the opportunity to experience exhibitors representing galleries from across the globe, including Leehwaik Gallery from the Republic of South Korea, London’s October Gallery, Rossi & Rossi in Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia’s ATHR Gallery
During the festival, Abu Dhabi Art also hosts a series of cultural talks and book launches with leading figures in the world, plus site-specific performances commissioned in different locations throughout the city. Highlights include Shabaka, an interactive music experience commissioned by Berkley Abu Dhabi and Noon, an experimental music project comprising traditional Middle Eastern music with jazz.
This annual Beyond: Emerging Artists initiative gives three emerging UAE artists a platform to realise ambitious art projects, where their works will be shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat as part of Abu Dhabi Art. Over the past year, multidisciplinary artist and co-founder and director of Lebanon-based publisher Dongola Limited Editions Abed Al Kadiri has mentored three UAE-based emerging artists, Majd Alloush, Sarah Al Mehairi and Mohamed Khalid, as they create new commissioned works exploring the theme of borders, home and man-made territories. The Beyond programme runs alongside Al Kadiri’s acclaimed pandemic undertaking Cities Under Quarantine: The Mailbox Project, which will be travelling to Al Ain and be on view at Qasr Al Muwaiji until January 22, 2023.
Abu Dhabi Art invites established artists to create site-specific works in historic sites in Al Ain and the wider Abu Dhabi emirate to draw new audiences. The works created by the commissioned artists are revealed during Abu Dhabi Art fair and remain on show to the public for several months. This year sees special projects from Italian multi-disciplinary artist Marinella Senatore at Manarat Al Saadiyat and Al Hosn, alongside commissioned works by Abdullah Al Saadi plus special pieces from Shilpa Gupta in Al Jahili Fort, and mechanical sculpturist Conrad Shawcross in Al Ain Oasis.

Yas Island loves a good fight. But this month, instead of UFC fighters battling it out in the Octagon, we’re going old school. The light heavyweight clash between WBA champion Dmitry Bivol and Gilberto Ramirez on November 5 at the Etihad Arena is the first of a new ‘Champions Series’ partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and sporting events promoter Matchroom Boxing and represents the capital’s power move into staging major boxing events.
This boxing match-up promises to be a spectacle, and the stakes are high. Russian boxer Bivol, whose record reads 20-0 (11 knockouts), makes the whopping ninth defence of his WBA crown following his
Words: Laura Coughlinstunning victory against Saul Canelo Alverez in May.
His Mexican contender, Ramirez, meanwhile, sits as the mandatory challenger having reeled o five victories since moving from super-middleweight – he previously held the WBO belt at 168lbs – to light heavyweight, with overall record standings at 44-0.
Speaking at the launch event, Matchroom Sport chairman Hearn said: “This is a historic moment for Abu Dhabi and DCT, and for Matchroom Boxing as well, as we build a long-term partnership here of global, high-profile world championship fights.
“I believe November 5 to be the start of such an exciting future in what has become the global sports hub here in Abu Dhabi. This is an iconic moment. For us as a business this is just the start of a new world of boxing here in the Middle East.”

The skiing destination – near and far – you’ll find us at this winter
An hour outside of Beirut you’ll find Mzaar, Lebanon’s most popular – and scenic – ski resort. Here, the mountain peaks are covered in an impressive blanket of snow from December until early April, providing the perfect backdrop for some 80kms of runs. Whether you get your thrills skiing or snowboarding, this ski resort is filled with largely easy runs for you to take on as you soak up the surroundings, with some more moderate and a small selection of difficult slopes for the experienced winter sports fans.
Stay: Situated right on the slopes, the five-star InterContinental Mzaar Hotel offers ski-in, ski-out comfort so guests are right in the heart of the action. Couple that with a best-in-class spa, indoor swimming pool, four lane bowling alley and even a private cinema, and you’ve got yourself a spectacular snowy escape.

The country’s best ski resort is Gudauri in the Greater Caucasus mountains, thanks to its high elevation and impressive snow depth reaching 2.5 metres. It’s a winter wonderland of 450 kilometres of slopes spread over four massifs, so there are runs for all abilities, and with relatively low elevation, much of the skiing takes place on beautiful tree-lined slopes with spectacular views of Mont Blanc. Off the pistes, party people can look forward to a regular rotation of events at La Folie Douce, and some 60 restaurants await gourmands, from Michelin star meals to festive dinner parties at favourites including Verde and Le Piaf.

A luxe escape in the heart of Downtown Dubai
Find yourself in the heart of the action at The Dubai Edition, located a stone’s throw from Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall. The city hotel is tucked just off the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, surrounded by a huge number of retailers, restaurants, and attractions.
Design is at the absolute core of this property, with warm beige tones used throughout. From the open plan stonewalled lobby and its elegant fusilli-shaped staircase to the vast windows and arched ceilings, the space feels chic and inviting. Much attention has been paid to the details, achieving a well-considered minimalist finish.
We stayed in a Deluxe Room, while other options include a Superior or Deluxe Suite. The size is just right for a couple, and comes with a king bed, a small armchair next to a marble table, and a balcony that looks out to Burj Khalifa. The bed and bath are separated by only a curtain, but the shower is so wonderful that we’d choose it over the former any day. The bed passes the ‘cloud’ test with flying colours, as we’re blessed with one of the best night’s sleeps we’ve had in a long while.
Thia Skylounge is the hotel’s pool and bar. Located on the 2nd floor, it offers prime Burj Khalifa views as guests enjoy a day lounging on a cabana or sipping a cocktail on the terrace. The space is cosy and feels exclusive, with lush foliage climbing the walls.
The Dubai Edition is steadily increasing its restaurant portfolio, making solid choices as it does. The strongest concept so far is Peruvian rooftop restaurant, Inti, which boasts a terrace with a retractable roof, overlooking Burj Khalifa. The food and service and as brilliant as the views, and as the night goes on, the vibe continues to build thanks to the resident DJ. For a more subdued evening, head to Duomo, the chic Italian restaurant at the back of the hotel lobby. Here, food reigns supreme and guests can make their way through plates of crudi, pizza, pasta and more meaty mains. Duomo is also the spot for guests to enjoy breakfast. As the large arched window floods the room with morning light, a la carte dishes are served alongside barista-made coffee and fresh juices.
The Dubai Edition is currently running a special offer, where guests can enjoy a Deluxe Room with breakfast and late check out included, plus a cocktail at Thia and Dhs200 credit to use at the spa. Prices start from Dhs1,599 per night, plus taxes.
