It’s that not everyone was made for show business. After a few years dabbling in tap, ballet and jazz classes, by aged 10 I’d hung up my dancing shoes - professionally at least. Nowadays, I’m very happy to spectate rather than participate, leaving it to the experts to present jaw-dropping choreography, note-perfect vocals and dazzling costumes. If you are too, you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s showtime in Abu Dhabi. Over the coming weeks and months, there’s a string of events to get excited about, all put on for your viewing and listening pleasure. Whether you’re big into theatre, love to see an international megastar perform or your perfect weekend includes raving at a music festival, we’ve got all the shows to keep your fingers clicking and toes tapping from p14.
The arrival of October also means we’re finally back outdoors (collective applause) enjoying the best of Abu Dhabi’s alfresco offerings. From p32, you’ll find all of our favourite waterfront bars, where drinks are served with a side of stunning sea vistas.
And if you’re looking for adventure a little further afield than the capital, a day trip to one of the natural wonders on our doorstep might be the change of scenery you’ve been dreaming of. Turn to page 24 to start planning your next getaway, with dazzling mountain views, gorgeous seas packed with marine life, or even a giraffe sighting on the agenda. Now that’s entertainment.
Enjoy the issue,

UAE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…
Who are you, and what made you famous?
I am Massimo Vidoni aka ‘The Truffleman’. My truffles made me famous. I sell caviar and truffles to all the top restaurants in the UAE. Chef Reif Othman gave me the name when we met in Zuma 10 years ago. I decided to make an Instagram account called @trufflemandubai and everything grew from there.
How long have you been in the UAE?
I’ve been here for more than 10 years now. My wife was offered a job for an ad agency, and I was bored of Italy, so we packed two suitcases and moved here to start a new chapter. We’d heard a
lot about Dubai and felt like it’s a place where dreams can come true. It’s open for everybody and it’s easy to start a business here.
What does a typical day at work look like for you? Instagram is my forte. I have more than 250k followers and that’s how I do business, so the first thing I do is check in with everyone on there. Next, I run to the office and check any new shipments. I’ll also see that all the day’s orders go out to the restaurants smoothly. In the afternoon, I do tastings with different chefs in my office, which is my favourite part of the day. I also like to go out two or three times a week to visit
my clients and support their restaurants.
What’s your favourite thing about your job? Everything from tasting the meals that the chefs make with my products, to seeing their reaction when we open a big caviar tin. It is not only about selling. Yes, of course
I am here to sell but the people I meet are all artists, all special. Chefs are super interesting to me, we have the same passion and love for food, and we are intransigent about quality standards.
What’s the most expensive truffle you ever sold?
In November 2018 I sold a giant white truffle, which weighed 1.006kg to Roberto’s in DIFC. It was the most expensive truffle ever sold in the UAE. It was a Tuber Magnatum Pico truffle – one of the rarest types in the world and has an approximate value of Dhs187,000.
What’s the most random dish you’ve added truffle to? I add truffles to almost everything, but the most random dish is grilled cheese. Truffles are usually shaved extremely thinly over a variety of dishes, like pasta, pizza, risotto or eggs.
What’s been your biggest achievement so far? To come to the UAE without knowing anyone, and in just 10 years to be known in the industry and to see my face on TV shows such as BBC’s Inside Dubai makes me super happy. But the biggest achievement for me is to see my truffles on the menus of the most iconic restaurants, and being invited to eat there is fantastic, especially as, until recently, I couldn’t even afford to eat in these venues.
Do you think that Dubai will be your forever home? Yes, I am very happy here. We bought our own home, and with the recent Golden Visa programme, I can now see Dubai as a place where I can retire as well. It’s a forever home at least from October to June each year.
@trufflemandubai

The UAE capital is alive with the sound of applause, cheers and music as we welcome a season of huge shows. From theatre to sport, and plenty of live music, Abu Dhabi has pulled out the big ones over the next couple of months and we couldn’t be happier about it.

f we were ranking our favourite festivals of the year, Oktoberfest would come near the top. It’s all that incredible Bavarian food, the socially acceptable wearing of lederhosen and drindls, the giant steins of hops, being able to use words like schnitzel and strudel in context. Then there’s the oompah music and impromptu prost-ing. It is, we think it’s fair to say, a long way from being the wurst.
The Marriott Hotel Al Forsan’s trusted sports bar, Appaloosa, is going full Bayern Munich and topping the hotel’s Bundesliga of Oktoberfest celebrations. To be fair it is the only venue in the competition, but trophies are trophies. Throughout the week, you’ll be able to dig your gabel (fork) into tasty German cuisine, and lift a big ol’ glass of the weissbier in homage to the spirit of the fest. At weekends, there will be a special Bavarian barbecue, with unlimited meats to enjoy in the great alfresco for just Dhs99.

If you need a change of scenery and have anything from an afternoon to a full day on your hands, fill up the car, hit up your playlist, and start exploring the surrounding area
ut those pesky petrol prices back of mind – sometimes you just have to get out of town. Fortunately, there are plenty of fun destinations within a halftank’s driving distance of Abu Dhabi, so you won’t even have to fill up until you get home.
The joy of a day trip adventure more than offsets a little pain in the wallet, and you’ll come back with a topped-up supply of great memories. Hit the road to any of these nearby locales for a weekend of diversion. All that cool stuff going on in the capital will still be here when you get back.
Aleisurely drive through the Hajar mountains, and you’ll arrive in picture-perfect Hatta, Dubai’s most exciting outdoor adventure hub, home to calm waters and picturesque hiking trails. Surrounded by mountains and filled with turquoise water, the Hatta Dam is great for kayaking (hattakayak.com) or renting a pedalo with your family. You can also hire bikes at the Wadi Hub and choose from four clearly defined, colour-coded routes. Green trails are easy, blue trails are moderate, red trails are difficult and black trails are for highly experienced bikers only. Alternatively, you can enjoy a 10km hike past Hatta Heritage village, or simply enjoy the family fun at the Hub, with obstacle courses, zorbing, axe throwing and ziplines. visithatta.com
“It’s Yas Island for me. I have a five-year-old son that unquestioningly believes he’s going to join the Justice League one day, and a two-year-old daughter that idolises her brother. And there’s nowhere in the region that captures their open-jawed awe in quite the same fashion as Batman’s House (that’s ‘Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi’ for anybody outside the Buckeridge family). There’s a blockbuster collection of rides fit for all ages, the character meet-and-greets are fodder for confirmed core memories, and with the new WB Abu Dhabi hotel next door, my wife and I get to end the day with rooftop sundowners.”
- Miles Buckeridge, Senior Online Reporter – What’s On“My family and I love to get out in nature whenever we can. We often make a combined trip, first by visiting the fossil dunes, which have now been made more accessible with a seasoned path that leads drivers there. It’s only about 30 minutes from the city and are fascinating natural wonders. Very close to the fossil dunes are the salt lakes. They are full of dense salt, not for swimming, of course, but they are great to see. We walk and play around the dunes that surround them. If you’re lucky, you might even see a couple of flamingos hanging around. It’s always a beautiful experience to see our kids run free.”
- Sasha Quince, yoga teacher and life coach
For diving enthusiasts, the UAE has some surprisingly beautiful sites, mainly in the emirate of Fujairah. Sandy Beach Hotel (sandybeach.ae) is about as far away from a five-star, Abu Dhabi-style resort as you can get – and that’s part of its charm. Think Hotel California with a hint Indian Keralan hospitality. Team What’s On like it because it’s great value for money, the staff are friendly, the ales are mostly cold, and the dive centre is a one-minute walk from the restaurant. But the reason most people come to Fujairah is to swim, snorkel, or scuba around Snoopy Island, which sits about 164 feet offshore. Affectionately named after its uncanny resemblance to the cartoon character sleeping on the roof of his doghouse, the little island’s rocky bottom is home to a variety of fish. It’s a special place for families because divers can head off for an underwater adventure while others can snorkel, sunbathe on the beach or swim in the pool. In the evening, before coming home, pay a visit to the recently revamped Gonu at Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, just down the road. The Omani lobster is excellent.

If it’s never occurred to you to head to Umm Al Quwain for a day of fun, then you’ve been missing out on a hidden gem. Kite Beach Center welcomes visitors to sink their toes in the sand and ride a surfboard or kitesurf, but even more attractive is the quintessential Sri Lankanstyle mini-village surrounding the shore. The beach is lined with hammocks, sea swings, rustic cabanas and charming wooden huts. Plus, there’s a wonderful little beach-side restaurant serving up burgers, grills, pizzas and vegan specials. Best of all it’s all pet-friendly, meaning no family member gets left behind for this day trip adventure. kitebeachcenter.ae
Head for the highest mountain range in the UAE and ride the world’s longest zip line. Located in Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate is quickly establishing itself as a serious outdoor adventure destination with hundreds of cyclists taking on the wickedly winding roads up to the top of Jebel Jais (the UAE’s highest mountain at 3,392 feet). Others also hike, rock climb, or hop aboard the Jais Sledder, a taboggan ride that hurtles you down the Hajar Mountain range. Alternatively, you can take a Jebel Jais Flight. The friendly team strap you in head-first onto one of two zip lines. Also known as the ‘green city’ or ‘garden city’ due to the many parks, gardens and open spaces that it boasts, a visit to Al Ain is the perfect escape. Despite its modest size, there are plenty of attractions, including the family friendly Al Ain Zoo. This zoo is not characterised by small cages and meagre wildlife displays. Instead, it feels much more like a safari park, with spacious enclosures spread across its 900 acres interspersed with smaller exhibitions. Highlights at Al Ain Zoo include watching the hippos splash around in their 10m-long ravine, catching a glimpse of the rare white tigers in their enclosure, and getting up close to the giraffes at their feeding station. alainzoo.ae

“Whenever I have a full free day, I like to get up at the crack of dawn and drive to Wadi Showka and explore the amazing hiking trails in the area. The hikes take you across part of the Hajar Mountains, so expect a pretty epic – and elevated – climb. I start from the Showka Dam, which has paved parking. From there, I head for the hills. Just to the right of the car park, you’ll see a long and very steep staircase that goes up and up and up. From the top, you’ll meander down along well designated trails that’ll bring you back to the bottom. It’s a fantastic way to spend half a day.”

The iconic Ibiza hotspot has found its way to the capital, and whilst the feel is more glamour and luxury rather than rustic and laid back, it’s still a smoking new addition to the scene. With the bar positioned on a circular floating platform, you’re always just mere steps from the gentle lapping waves. Plus, whether you’re here for a slick and stylish beach day or a few posh drinks with the in-crowd, you’ll actually feel like you’re on a Mediterranean island holiday.

Pacifico TIKI is a bit of a drive but has incredible panoramic vistas (and many great deals). Found in a wooden structure that juts out over the azure water, you’ll be tempted to settle into the first comfy sofa you come to on the terrace by the entrance. However, it’s the smaller, outward facing alfresco area on the other side of the bar that’s the real hidden treasure. With nothing but an endless expanse of glorious blue in front of you, hours go by exceptionally quickly at this fun and quirky spot.

Arriving at Cipriani Dolci Marina Mall feels like you’re being transported to Venice, stepping onto a luxurious yacht. From the getgo, the home-made focaccia dipped in Cipriani’s own olive oil and balsamic vinegar was a perfect way to start the experience.
Starting with drinks, we order the Strawberry Fields (Dhs42) – a smoothie, made with strawberry, coconut water, peach puree and coconut syrup, each sip is bursting with flavour. Upon recommendation, we also try the Giorgio (Dhs42), which is made with fresh blueberry, fresh blackberry, lime and Sprite – it’s refreshing and beautifully presented.
From the appetisers menu, we opt for the downtown salad (Dhs90), which was an interesting mix of shrimp, green beans and olives, the flavours of which all complemented each other surprisingly well. We also order the steak tartare (Dhs110). The friendly waitress kindly reminds us that the steak tartare will be served raw, and survived an awkward dad joke when asked if she can send it ‘well done’. Thankfully it arrived at the correct cooking temperature, and ticked the boxes, although we would’ve preferred a little more flavour.
Every day, Cipriani highlights a different pasta choice, and on this occasion, it was homemade spinach and ricotta ravioli with butter and sage (Dhs95). The portion could have been bigger, but for what it lacked in size it more than made up for in taste. To pair with the dish, we chose aubergine alla parmigiana (Dhs110). Despite the aubergine slices being slightly
thicker than we’d expect, it tasted great, although it lacked the molten bubbly cheese we look for on a parmigiana dish. While Cipriani Dolci’s menu is varied, it’s most famous for its desserts. We couldn’t resist trying its popular vanilla meringue (Dhs100), as well as the freshly whippedto-order pistachio ice cream (Dhs90). Overall, the desserts really stole the show. The meringue was light and fluffy, while the pistachio ice cream, served with caramelised pistachios and maraschino cherries, was quite possibly one of the best we’ve tasted – you can tell it was whipped with extra care and passion.

Overall a brilliant lunch; incredible service paired with delicious food is always a pleasurable experience.
Words: Shelby GeeTwenty-nineteen was the year that the wheels of the Mamafri restaurant machine hit the tarmac, which followed a testing time for most businesses, particularly so for new ones, and a positively hostile one for new restaurants.
Emirati-conceived Mamafri seems to have gone beyond weathering that storm, it has thrived – growing from a five-table Jumeirah set up, to a new location in DIFC and now, this latest feather in its legacy cap, an Abu Dhabi location at Sheikha Fatima Park.
The interiors are a sharp contrast to the urban oasis outside, a segmented cocoon-scape of mandoline soundwaves hangs from the ceiling –ignore a few decorative details and we could be in the belly of a blue whale, or the hull of an intergalactic spacecraft. Fortunately for our rumbling stomachs we are, in fact, in a restaurant.
We opt for a table at the foot of the glass-fronted restaurant, sit down and flick through the menu. It’s bijoux but varied, there are curated specimens from a variety of Asian culinary stories. It’s an ensemble cast of Malaysian, Thai, Cantonese and Japanese dishes – of which, we’re told, that the wagyu sando and ramen are the most popular.
We pick ramen (Dhs54) off the back of a coin flip.
To go alongside it, we order a ‘spicy boy’ chicken bun (Dhs54), with the understandable expectation that we’d soon be taking a bao. Along with the Japanese noodle soup, the waiter returns however with what is, unmistakably, a chicken burger.
After cramming an ambitious wedge into our mouth, there’s an almost immediate mid-chew urge to evangelise
about just how good it is. This is burger physics 101. The unstoppable force of a crisp-shelled, juicy-cored chicken fillet smashing headlong into the immovable object of a spicy pickled chilli relish. A rare and genuine eureka moment.
The ramen is a worthy second study. It’s not the most authentically Japanese version of the meal you’re likely to find in Abu Dhabi, but it is amongst the most exciting. There are familiar nutty notes from the sesame and miso, but there’s more complex, swirling earthy stock to explore within the broth. It feels wholesome and restorative. Forget chicken soup, this is our future cure for any acute cases of the man flu.
Mamafri, Sheikha Fatima Park, Al Bateen. @lovemamafri
It’s cool, an outlier, a sigma with a tech house soundtrack and a stubborn refusal to deliver what’s expected.
Can this cult Dubai restaurant recreate it’s magic in the capital?Words: Miles Buckeridge
The reputation of modern British cuisine on the international stage is still undergoing major surgery. There are decades of lackluster fish ‘n’ chip suppers, oily curries, microwaved pub grub and vegetables boiled into a state of meta-paste that need to be undone before international foodie tours of Stoke-onTrent become de rigueur.
There is at least one area of the rehabilitation effort that consistently racks up gains though – the traditional British roast dinner. It’s a UK gastronomic export that has always enjoyed a relative level of insulation from the tainted tar brush, and when you find examples backed by cheffing talent of the caliber of multiple Michelin Star-honoured Tom Aikens, that’s an ambassadorial double act that really waves the Union Jack with gusto.
And with Sundays, the officially sanctioned ceremonial window for roast dinners, now part of the UAE weekend – it really is the perfect day for us to be pulling
out chairs at Chef Aikens’ Abu Dhabi steakhouse, Oak Room at the Abu Dhabi Edition. The Sunday roast package here offers a three-hour, three-course menu priced from Dhs245, it comes with all the rockstar trimmings and the implied hopes of a nation pinned on the outcome.
And kicking things off on the main stage this afternoon is some home-baked sourdough bread with marmite butter. A British product that enjoys a famously polarising appeal, “you either love it or hate it” the brand’s slogan honestly proclaimed.
Brave, both in marketing and meal terms.
It’s a gambit that pays off immediately. The taste extremities smoothed out in the creaminess of butter, its tang tempered –we’re left with a rather sophisticated sort of marmite umami party.
The collection of sharing starters is smart too –the country garden shades of a kale salad, Caledonian hot smoked salmon, an heirloom tomato and ricotta salad with aged balsamic, and a beef carpaccio with forest mushrooms.
The ensemble is light, fresh – not wholly inspired from within the culinary borders of Albion – but it’s a blend that richly benefits from defying British tradition and being a bit multilingual. The intricate salt and sour tones of the beef dish, and surprisingly complex notes of the allotment-fresh tomato and ricotta, sing the loudest for us.
The headline act, the self-titled album, is of course the roast itself. Choose between chicken, lamb, beef (with the option of beef Wellington on a table of four) or a vegan joint. Our table opts for chicken and beef. The beef rump is carved tableside. It’s a Jagger move, all hip-sway and mic cable twirl, but it’s justifiable swagger. Everything that ends up on the plate – the tender meat, oven-fresh vegetable sides, a rapturous cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, two types of gravy, horseradish cream and a Yorkshire pudding of considerable but not preposterous size – is a victory of Churchillian proportions.
There’s a full line-up of British desserts to ‘cheerio’ the meal with. But we only have eyes for the sticky toffee pudding. There are no gimmicks here, the Oak Room roast takes all your prejudices about British cuisine and tears them up in a fit of rebellion.

Tell your friends, we’ve found the capital’s next party hotspot
Ask any Abu Dhabi resident where the liveliest place is to dance and party, and we’ll guarantee you they’ll say Yas Island. But Kai is poised to change that. Launched back in May at Downtown’s WTC Mall, it starts the evening as a chilled restaurant, serving theatrical, Instagram-worthy Asian and Latin dishes. But by 11.30pm, it transforms into an intimate and ultra-cool club.
When we arrive at 8pm, it’s understandably sedate for the first hour or so, but that ensures we give our full focus to the tempting bites and flamboyant cocktails. Kai’s cuisine comes with all the most lavish adornments you can imagine;
think whirls of dramatic smoke, striking charcoal tempura and generous sprinkles of gold leaf. It all tastes just as good as it looks, and we’d happily start every night out with the moreish miso honey shrimp, light and fresh crab maki rolls, explosively flavoursome burrata salad and the addictive brisket bao.
By the time we have finished nibbling, the lights have dimmed, and the strobe-covered walls and ceiling have started to flicker, symbolising the start of the ‘later sitting’. As we move to the bar, the excitement in the air is almost tangible. The DJ hits the decks, the mood instantly becomes more upbeat and the tables start to fill up fast. Every inch of Kai is sleek and impressive, from the autumnal leaves that litter the roof of the washrooms to the evocative ‘Til Death Do Us Party’ red neon sign.
Remarkably, it’s morphed into a different venue to the one we arrived in. The only difficulty is working out which side of Kai we like most; the highend lounge phase, or its exclusive Ibiza-bar night shift. However, one constant is that Kai’s vibes are far more elegant than some of the city’s other well-known party spots.
The friendly mixologist is happy to recommend plenty of signature concoctions, and each one is perfectly balanced, aromatic and refreshing. Our favourite tiki-style tropical tipple is so extravagant it comes literally on fire, and it’s at this point that we realise there’s no chance of getting to bed before midnight.
In fact, let’s push that bedtime to 1am.

Maddy Butcher is one of UAE’s most popular street artists. Her creations can be seen all over the country at hotels, lounges, and art festivals. Originally from the UK, Maddy moved to the UAE from New York in 2011 in search of ‘more adventure’. She was working in advertising up until 2016, when she decided to solely focus on art. “[In the UAE], everyone is free to go after every opportunity they find, without preconceptions,” she tells us. “It’s where I’ve grown as a person and grown to understand other nationalities and cultures that I would never have had the chance to in a city like New York.”
Since then, Maddy’s popularity has grown immensely, receiving requests for everything from private works to huge murals in public spaces. Colourful, abstract pieces make up her style as well as big, bold intricate portraits with energetic themes. But it’s not just the UAE that has fallen in love with Maddy’s creativity; her street art can be found across New York, London, Barcelona and even north India.
When we sit down to chat to her, Maddy clarifies that she is a street artist, not a graffiti artist. For most graffiti artists,
anonymity is synonymous with the passion for the artform. “When it comes to street art, it should be much more than a pretty picture outside on walls,” she tells us. “It has to react to and serve the place that it’s in to make it better.” While progress is moving in the right direction, Maddy’s goal is to see street art become less of a taboo subject in the UAE. She hopes to inspire women to start picking up spray paint cans to express themselves. “Graffiti is seen as a boy’s club and there’s truth in that, but street art should really be the equalizer,” she explains.
In Abu Dhabi, her most notable piece is Noodley Jazz at Abu Dhabi Zayed Port. The long mural features a combination of abstract work and portraiture. The people in the mural, Maddy points out, are “real people with real expressions, plenty of colour, inclusivity and fluid joy”.
Projects can sometimes take a couple of weeks to complete, from concept to approvals, then refining the preferred design before using scaffolding or a hydraulic lift to paint the wall. In terms of tools, Maddy uses pens, ink, spray paint, masking tape and stencils, although is seeing more of a need for a projector as her pieces get bigger. “My most recent eight-floor piece on Yas Island was done without a projector and that was not smart – we probably lost at least three days – [I was] high up on scaffolding, trying to mark things up with string and masking tape – thankfully my assistant Pete was an engineer [previously].

Back in March, the curtains closed on the world’s greatest show. Across six months, 192 countries proudly showcased their ideas and aspirations, megastars entertained the masses at Al Wasl Plaza and more than 200 restaurants fed the 24 million who made their way through the grand Expo 2020 gates. But this October, we’ll get to say hello to the world’s greatest show 2.0, as the site is transformed into Expo City Dubai. Here’s your essential guide.
Two of the three thematic pavilions: Alif, the Mobility Pavilion; and Terra, the Sustainability Pavilion have returned in their original form. If you didn’t visit Alif first time around, prepare to be transported through time where you’ll get to see how mobility has shaped human history. At Terra, visitors can expect a showcase of best practices in sustainability, journeying to swirling oceans and verdant forests on an interactive discovery that will leave you reconsidering your approach to the planet. Tickets are Dhs50 per pavilion.
Words: Alice HolthamWhile visitors are welcome to stroll the site at leisure, you can get in a workout by hiring eBikes and eScooters or give weary legs a rest and hop on buggies or the Expo Explorer train.
For fans of a vantage point with fabulous views, no trip to Expo City will be complete without a spin around Garden in the Sky, a rotating observation deck that lifts visitors 55 metres above ground. Elsewhere, making a welcome return to Instagram feeds will be Expo favourite, Surreal. This gravity-defying water feature puts on dazzling displays of expertly choreographed music, water and fire. Then there’s Al Wasl Plaza, Expo’s beating heart and jaw-dropping events space, where star-studded performances from Coldplay, Ellie Goulding and Christina Aguilera wowed guests first time around. Not to forget the next generation, younger visitors to Expo City can enjoy hours of fun at the outdoor playground and carousel.
One of the three key Expo 2020 themes was opportunity, which saw the creation of the opportunity district and the focal Opportunity Pavilion. Later this year, the Opportunity Pavilion will reopen as an interactive museum. Inside, visitors can relieve the impressive feats and unforgettable highlights from the six action-packed months of Expo 2020 Dubai. But journeying further back in time, the museum will also offer visitors the opportunity to discover more about the incredible history and lasting impact of previous world expos.
Can’t squeeze everything into one day? Then check-in to the only hotel at Expo City, Rove Expo 2020. After a day exploring the mini-city, make a splash in the pool, where an afternoon dip comes with glorious views over Al Wasl Dome. rovehotels.com
Just because the summer has been and gone, it doesn’t mean our cinema-going expectations should go into hibernation. We’ve been rummaging around in the box office ‘coming soon’ file cabinet and can assure you, there’s still a slew of solid gold, silver screen action headed to your nearest multiplex over the coming months.

It was only ever going to be a matter of time before Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, pulled on the spandex and entered into one comic franchise or another. He’s gone with DC, which is an interesting choice (although it seems no longer an eternally binding one) given their inconsistent record, but he’s always been
the sort to side with a scrappy underdog. Johnson, plays the titular anti-hero, a superbeing released into the modern world after five thousand years of imprisonment. That kind of stretch in solitary does things to a man, and rather than going the ‘full tub of Ben and Jerry’s’ route to grief resolution, he takes it out on those in close proximity. Despite this classic bully behaviour, a Justice collective spot potential in Adam, ‘maybe we can change him’ they scribble into their diary. And change him they must, because an enemy even more powerful than Black Adam can smell exactly what they are cooking.

Films from the playwright, screenwriter, producer, and director, Martin McDonagh don’t come around that often, but when they do — they usually end up being regarded as cult classics. Even from the little we know about The Banshees of Inisherin, it feels like we’re going to be getting another theatrical McDonagh classic. It stars long-time collaborators Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson and covers the fallout of a rift between two best friends.
Expected: November 11
The world is a far poorer place for the loss of Chadwick Boseman. A fact honoured by the decision of the Marvel boardroom that Boseman’s character in the original Black Panther movie, T’Challa would not be recast. But ending the dynasty that Chadwick helped create right there also seemed unfair. And so we face a Black Panther sequel without T’Challa, another hero must don the feline scratch mitts and guard the many secrets of Wakanda. Let’s just say Disney’s Multiverse cheat code hack has essentially made anything possible. Little is known about the plot, other than King T’Challa’s passing has left a contested power vacuum, with enemies queueing up to take advantage of the distraction. We can only hope they do our Chadwick proud, *slaps chest* Wakanda Forever.

Angry chef movies have been enjoying a bit of a comeback recently, and that suits us just fine.
Professional kitchens are a hotbed of dueling egos, sociopathic screaming fits and, with the increasingly farcical fashions in food, an air ripe for parody *snorts in disgust at the suggestion of pesto flavoured popcorn*. The Menu stars Anya TaylorJoy, Nicholas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes. It’s being described as black horror comedy, and the story follows Taylor-Joy and Hoult as a couple that head to a super exclusive restaurant, helmed by Fiennes — for a very special sort of molecular gastronomy tasting menu. Treading the line between degustation and just plain disgusting, not all of the chef’s courses are going to make the Instagram feed.
Expected: December 9
The Brenaissance has begun. Once a blockbuster regular, Brendan Fraser has been all but absent from our screens for a considerable chunk of time. He plays the lead in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, a film that received a six minute standing ovation after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Fraser was moved to tears. The early reactions on his performance as Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher desperately trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter, seem to suggest the Brenaissance might well be boosted further by an upcoming Oscar nomination.
Expected: December 15
This long-awaited sequel sees a lot of the surviving cast members returning, along with the addition of new talent such as Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Michelle Yeoh and Vin Diesel. Events are set a decade on from the first movie, and follow the trials and tribulations of the Sully family, and water presumably. Should we expect a critique of private corperations commercialising a basic human necessity? Maybe. Or maybe James Cameron just really loves water.
Expected: December 23
The original Knives Out, a Christie-esque ‘whodunnit?’ starring Daniel Craig as the sole investigator of a fiendish murder, was one of the surprise hits of 2019. Ok, with the pandemic it was a quiet year for the film industry – but it really was a banger. The sequel sees Craig reprise his role as Detective Benoit Blanc, as he’s brought in to solve, yep, another grizzly murder, this time on the private island of a tech billionaire. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Edward Norton (as the billionaire), Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista and Ethan Hawke. And we don’t know but if we had to guess – it was the butler, in the library, with the glass onion.
Going to a normal HIIT class then claiming you’re familiar with Barry’s Bootcamp is kind of like getting a papercut and saying you know how labour feels. It’s not so much a workout as a 50-minute, heart-pounding and furiously intense workshop where energetic instructors bellow “Be your best you!” over blaring Calvin Harris and red-hued strobes. All conducted across treadmills and benches in a space affectionately known as the Red Room that feels like the inside of a nightclub.
And now Abu Dhabi residents can get a salty taste for themselves.
Located in The Galleria Al
Maryah Island, the first-ever Barry’s Bootcamp has opened in Abu Dhabi featuring both the Red Room and an all-new Flex Lounge.
The OG Barry’s workout alternates between the tredder (Barry’s lingo for treadmill) and floor. You might be jogging uphill for one minute, sprinting on a flat surface ‘til your lungs burn the next, with a range of incline walks, runs and sprints in between, before hitting the floor for plank jacks, mountain climbers and bicep curls, depending on which specific body part the trainer has planned to annihilate that day.
For more of a strength-based workout, the new Flex Lounge hosts Barry’s ‘Lift’ class, which is designed to complement the work done in the Red Room by building muscle mass and concentrating on form. Also a 50-minute class, Lift is entirely different from a standard Barry’s class. While things in the traditional Barry’s routine move at a fast pace, this session is a slower-paced programme so you can lift heavier. Classes run daily, throughout the day. There are also ladies-only classes, themed classes, live DJ sessions, plus a host of ad-hoc challenges during the year.
Words: Laura CoughlinTell us a bit about yourself and your role at Barry’s.
I’m Andrii, but overtime, I’ve become known as Drey. I’ve been at Barry’s for over four years now. I was previously a head instructor at Barry’s Dubai and have just joined the opening team as curriculum manager and lead instructor at Barry’s Abu Dhabi.
What do you personally love about the Red Room?
I love everything about Barry’s. The Red Room. The vibes. The music. The energy. I feed off good energy, and that’s what Barry’s is all about. The most rewarding part of Barry’s for me is seeing my clients push themselves to their limit and leaving the Red Room happy.
Where do you begin your Barry’s workout: Tredder or floor?
Unlike the status quo, I like to start on the floor. I build up momentum during the floor segment to save energy for pushing to the max on the tredder. Warming up is key for both the treadmill and floor. So, whether I’m teaching the class or jumping
in to support the team, warming up is critical so that you can push to yourself to your limits and minimise any injury.
What’s your favourite fitness move? I don’t like to complicate things. My favourite moves are basic. For example, when targeting the lower body, squats and lunges are my go-to. Add on weights with each move for variation, and you’re good to go.
Finally, your go-to post-workout shake?
Easy. Superfood Flex from our Fuel Bar. It’s high protein, filled with good nutrients and feeds muscles with all the recovery they need.

What advice do you give the young talent in the region who dream to be in the NBA one day?
Well, the most important thing is to always listen to your parents. But, on the court, I tell kids to study their favourite player and copy everything they do. Practice their turnaround jumper. Practice their shooting motion. Mimic their footwork. Take anything and everything you can and go from there.
What do you know about Abu Dhabi, and what are you looking forward to doing when you are here?
I’m excited to experience a new culture and interact with locals, something I love doing any time I go to a new country. And anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m excited to try some new food, too.

For many, Tbilisi is synonymous with Georgia – it is the capital of the country, after all. But a mere 220 kilometres west of this popular city, lies Kutaisi – one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world – just waiting to be discovered
Located a three-and-a-half-hour flight away from the UAE, Georgia has seen a surge of tourists over the past decade. While most tourists make a beeline for Tbilisi, Kutaisi is a city worth seeking out.
As with many cities, the centre is one that needs exploring and here in Kutaisi, all you need is half a day (or a few hours if you’re short on time). Begin at the ornamental Colchis Fountain in Tsentraluri Moedani Square. Found in the heart of the city, the multi-level fountain is adorned with replicas of the ancient gold jewellery discovered at the nearby archaeological site of Vani. The fountain is illuminated every evening, so pay a visit during your post-dinner stroll to really see it come to life.
For culture vultures, head to the Meskhishvili Theatre – one of the oldest theatres in Georgia. It was built in 1861 and is named after one of Georgia’s best-known theatrical figures. The huge stage can host up to 830 spectators. Next, head over to Kutaisi Park (also called Park of Love) to escape the noise and check out some sculptures and monuments, as well as a view Kutaisi City Hall. Close by is White Bridge, which crosses over River Roni. Kutaisi is a city of bridges, and this particular footbridge is said to be one of the
most beautiful. Through the glass floor, sneak a peek at some of Rioni River’s white stones, before soaking in the old city views on either side and snap a souvenir photo with the Picasso Boy sculpture.
Make your way back to Colchis Fountain and spend time exploring the many cafés and restaurants in the surrounding area. Get some shopping done at Kutaisi Central Market (Green Bazaar) where you can pick up local treats to take home with you, including churchkhela – Georgia’s traditional candy. You can wile away hours just weaving through the lanes, checking out the street art and local shops. As for souvenirs, there are plenty in the area; have a look around before making your final decision to see where you’re getting your Georgian Lari worth of goodies.
Located in the Imereti region on Ukimerioni Hill, one of the oldest temples in Georgia stands out with its striking, teal-roofed domes. Bagrati Cathedral was built in 1003 and has sadly seen trying times from fires, battles and more over the centuries. Inside the cathedral, you’ll find beautiful frescos but head outside to the South Gate and you will see the original murals dating back to the 11th century. The cathedral was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994 but after major restorations that included the addition of modern elements such as steel and glass, the status was removed. Nonetheless, it is a must-visit for tourists and has one of the best panoramic views of the city.
The village of Kumistavi is home to the beautiful Prometheus Caves – one of the largest underground cave systems in the world. You can walk the entire length (1,420 metres) of the cave and gaze upon a seemingly neverending arrangement of natural stalactites and stalagmites during a one-hour tour. The formations are all enhanced by good lighting so you can take plenty of photos, although do so without flash so that you don’t disturb the sleeping bats. Just as you reach the end, you’ll be treated to a beautiful light show with music. The path is wellmaintained, but we recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
Grafitti art in Kutaisi City Centre Colchis Fountain Picasso Boy statue on White BridgeFor a dose of still calmness packed with nature, hop on an inflatable raft at Martvili Canyon. The boat ride is around 20 minutes, and well worth it to enjoy turquoise waters, lush greenery, and picturesque views away from the city. You will be provided with a life jacket and the boats are limited to six people, plus a guide. After you hop off, you can check out the walking trail where you can see even more waterfalls.
For those of you who have tried the zip lines in the UAE, you’re about to swap city skyline views and brown mountain peaks for endless green forests and lush mountains. The 800-metre Sairme Zip Line – which is the longest in the Caucasus region – brings you down from the mountains (700 metres above sea level) to the Sairme Resort. The zip line is divided into two, but you can do both for 50 Georgian Lari (Dhs65).
After your adrenaline-pumping experience, make a pit stop at the small town of Baghdati for its hot springs. The area is dotted with tiny colourful blocks where you’ll find taps dispensing mineral water which has unique properties said to help in overcoming ailments.
Located near White Bridge, Best Western Kutaisi is a great spot to stay at being so close to the city centre. On the top floor, you’ll find Roof Top Grill Restaurant where you can tuck into dinner and enjoy a drink or two before you turn in for the night. Prices start from Dhs440 per night. bwkutaisi.com
Boutique Grand Opera Hotel is a mere five minutes away from Colchis Fountain. The eco-friendly cosy rooms are adorned with wooden furniture, and the hotel even has a rooftop restaurant plus an underground restaurant and wine cellar. Prices start from Dhs420 per night. grand-opera-hotel-kutaisi. booked.net
Newport Hotel Kutaisi
Rooms at four-star Newport Hotel Kutaisi are beautiful in a minimalistic way. Previously a courthouse, the building has now been converted to a modern hotel with rooms that pop with ink blue and gold hues and unique design elements. Prices start from Dhs328 per night. nhkutaisi.com
Pkhali is a traditional Georgian dish made with minced vegetables, which is combined with walnut paste. It is usually served in three types: spinach (green), beetroot (purple) and white beans (white). It tastes great with warm pita bread or crackers.
Imeretian khachapuri is a circular filled bread stuffed with melting cheese – different from the khachapuri with an egg on top like at Tbilisi. In fact, there are about 53 types of khachapuri and if you take into consideration the different fillings, the number increases to 83. The Imeretian khachapuri can be eaten as a snack or can be paired with a fresh vegetable salad for a full meal.
Khinkali is a very popular dumpling in Georgian cuisine. You can order it stuffed with meat, and cheese, vegetables or mushrooms if you’re vegetarian. A quick lesson in eating this treat: Hold the ‘crown’, bite a small piece off at the bottom of the dumpling and slurp the delicious juice out. Eat the remainder and discard the top.
Wizz Air makes four trips to Kutaisi, Georgia per week with prices starting from Dhs375 (return).

This month, we’re checking into Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi where we’ll be switching off from the busyness of city life and relaxing at this luxe beachfront hotel.
We all know why we book a staycation, it’s to try and get as close to the real thing, even if just for a weekend, without leaving the country. So, in our eternal search for that convincingly ‘abroad’ feeling, we packed our car and headed up to Saadiyat Island. While the beachfront is wellknown for its crystal-clear water, it really must be seen to be believed. The almostMaldivian sea is the most perfect shade of light blue, and more than passes the ‘can you see the bottom?’ test.
Upon entering our room, a fresh coconut is waiting for us, and we quickly get comfortable on the balcony, taking in
the oceanic air and calming sea view. It’s a spacious room with a king bed, large bathroom, and a walk-in wardrobe. The bed has been decorated with rose petals ahead of our arrival – it’s the little things.
The well-lit lobby is broad and modern, with an Arabian feel. In the evenings, a DJ takes centre stage to set the mood for the rest of the night. Over the mezzanine, guests can spy a huge infinity pool stretching out towards the beach.
The pristine sand beach is vast and lengthy, shared with a few other five-star resorts on the island. We would’ve liked the sun loungers to be placed a little closer to the ocean though, especially in peak summer when the floor becomes actual lava. The pool is a more convenient alternative, with plenty of chic cabanas surrounding it.
Home to new Argentinian restaurant, Maté, Park Hyatt’s main sell is the two-storey Latin American concept, where guests can enjoy grilled dishes from the parrilla. In the morning, breakfast is served buffet-style at The Café. Other options include Shala Beach Lounge, The Beach House and The Library.
A king room with sea view starts at Dhs1,575 per night in October. The room includes a furnished private balcony overlooking the Arabian Gulf. hyatt.com
